00:00One of the points I made today was when Gordon Brown was Chancellor and then Prime Minister,
00:05we lifted 600,000 children out of poverty. Over the last 14 years more than 700,000 children
00:10have gone into poverty. So I welcome the taskforce looking at child poverty that Bridget Phillipson
00:17and Liz Kendall will lead. Today's vote in the Commons is an Opposition Day debate motion
00:23from the SNP. I'm less worried about that, I'm more worried and concerned and I'll be
00:27feeding into the taskforce review being conducted by Bridget and Liz because it's not just about
00:33one thing, there needs to be many things done to first address child poverty and then reverse
00:38it.
00:39Yeah and Labour in government have suggested that it might be an issue they look at later
00:42down the line. Do you think MPs need to show a degree of patience on this question?
00:46Well I think what Bridget and Liz have said, and Bridget said this as recently as today,
00:52is the two child benefit cap policy is one of the things that the review will be looking
00:59into. This Opposition Day motion today won't change any policy and so how you vote today
01:06is relevant to the work of the review. So I'll be asking everybody, whether you are
01:11a family, whether you're a parliamentarian, whether you are working in this sector, to
01:15feed into the review that Bridget and Liz are doing so the evidence is in the review
01:22and they can provide solutions to address this issue. First we've got to address the
01:25issue then reverse it.
01:26But how soon do you want to see the cap lifted?
01:28Oh look, there's going to be a budget later on this year. It's really important that Rachel
01:34Reeves asks the OBR to look into her budget and the figures this autumn. As soon as Labour
01:40government can in order to do so. But I fully support this review that Bridget and Liz lead
01:45with.
