00:00Why are people so obsessed with John Lewis's Christmas adverts?
00:04I think it's become a barometer for when Christmas preparation has officially arrived
00:09and for what everyone's feeling about it this year.
00:12Back when John Lewis started making these new, more cinematic, narrative-based adverts in 2007,
00:18it was all quite new.
00:20Now every big department store and supermarket has entered the fray
00:24and so people really want to see what the original brand has got up to.
00:28I think part of the reason it's endured for 18 years is because it's become increasingly rare
00:33for everyone to be watching the same thing at the same time and to have an opinion on it.
00:37There's so many channels and streaming platforms and social media,
00:41so this is the last final bonding moment.
00:44It's also a chance for people to lose their absolute minds and create some controversy,
00:48which obviously the media loves.
00:50My earliest John Lewis advert memory was the 2010 one called A Tribute to Givers.
00:56There was this huge drama about that particular advert.
00:58It showed a dog sitting in a kennel in the snow
01:01and everyone was so mad saying it was promoting animal cruelty
01:04and they had to put out a statement saying that no dogs were harmed.
01:07I was just obsessed by the drama of it all.
