00:00How much did it hurt you, David, when you got traded away from the Yanks after 98?
00:04Broke my heart. Broke my heart. It was a dream come true to play for the Yankees. You know,
00:10I grew up in San Diego as a Padre fan and a Yankee fan, national and American. And
00:15we'd go up to Anaheim. I'd go watch, try to watch Ron Guidry because he was my idol.
00:21And it was like, it was, the Yankees meant the world to me as a kid.
00:27And, but, you know, to get traded first day of spring training in 99, it just, it rocked my
00:35world. I was like, you gotta be kidding me. How do you get traded? You know, you just come off the,
00:39you know, you've won the World Series. You know, I think I went 4-0 in post-season,
00:45threw a perfect game that year, you know, got, it's just, it's just like, and I get traded for
00:51Clemens, you know, who's not a bad pitcher himself. I mean, he was a stud, but, but to me,
00:57it's just like, you know, I felt like I was a fan favorite, but you know, it was, it was just,
01:02I think it was Joe Torre because he didn't like me at all. You know, back then he might like me
01:09now. I don't know. I don't have any, I don't have any resentment now. I mean, I like Joe,
01:14but as a manager, I didn't think he was a great manager because he didn't treat everybody the
01:18same way. But, uh, you know, Dave, who does you tell me that LeBron gets treated the same as,
01:25you know, the 10th man at the end of the bench. Come on. You know how it goes.
01:29You know, you know what a good manager will be there. That's why Sparky Anderson was a
01:34great manager. He treated everybody the same. Bruce Bochy, the same way. Jim Fregosi,
01:40same way. He was a player's man, but he, he wanted everyone to, you know, feel like they're equal.
01:46You brought half the problems out upon yourself. Let's call it for what it is.
01:51What did I do? Well, you tell me you've written about it. Oh, he did, but he showed up late.
01:56He put his ass off. He painted the ass to Torrey. Come on. I mean, I mean, it doesn't seem like,
02:00and Dave, I love you by the way, but it doesn't seem like you ever, you accept any responsibility
02:05when it comes to the Joe Torre stuff. Like it's all Joe's fault. Nobody else says that about Joe
02:10Torrey, but you. Because Joe Torrey, I could get a handful of guys that could do that. Feel the
02:17same way about me. It feels the same that I do about Joe, but that's the thing. I went out and
02:24won. That's all I did. All I cared about was winning, you know, and protecting my, my teammates.
02:29They get hit. I'm drilling the next guy. That's what it is. But, but when you have to take the
02:35team flight and a day game and a day game the next day, but then you get Andy and Jor and,
02:41uh, and Clemens like two days earlier, I had, what does that tell you?
02:48Well, yeah, to play golf. You don't know the inside, you don't know the inside stuff. You
02:54only hear what the, what the writers, right. And half the time they write BS too. So to me,
02:59it's, it's, you know, it, I didn't like the media. So the media, you know, they would write crap
03:04about me and then, and then that's fine. But you know what, when I something good,
03:08write something positive, don't write something negative. But if I write bad,
03:11tell the world how bad I am. I'm, I'm fine with that, but you gotta be, you gotta be honest with
03:16yourself and you gotta, you gotta be able to defend yourself. And if, and if things don't go
03:21right, you gotta speak up. And I didn't, I wasn't afraid to speak up as you well know. So to me,
03:27to me, it's, you know, it doesn't matter what math I got along with a lot of managers, but there's
03:32a certain guys that they try to manage you and tell you what you can and can't do. I'm a grown
03:37ass man. I could do whatever I want, but, but don't, but don't put me in a different category
03:45than, you know, than Andy Pettit or, or Mariana Rivera or something like that.
