00:00Thanks Lee. I'm down in the Castrol pit with my mate Russell Ingle. The Enforcer, now what happened Russ? You got enforced out there by a Ford. What's going on?
00:09I know, I know. Sorry all you Holden fans out there. I can't believe it. The Enforcer has been enforced but I tell you what, we've still got one more race and we'll see if we can swap it around.
00:18Yeah, it looked a bit slippery. You sort of got a bit wide and it's a lot of dirt out there. A lot of cars going off and putting a lot of dirt on the track.
00:24Yeah, absolutely and it was pretty menacing seeing that bonnet come up behind me. It was almost as menacing as when you were racing and you were coming up behind me.
00:31I was just going to say mate, do you miss me?
00:33I do mate, I do. Mind you, I was going to say my bumper's a bit straighter but it isn't.
00:38Mate, there's a few other bumpers out there that are nowhere near straight so you're doing well. Up the front, obviously where you want to be. The car's looking pretty good.
00:46It wasn't quite as good as the first race that time but one to go. Obviously you want to get to the first corner first. That's the big key here, isn't it?
00:54Absolutely. I mean Barry's picked up the pace quite a bit from the first race but my car was pretty average to be honest so we've got to pick it up a bit but I think it's going to be a close tussle again so it should be interesting.
01:05I think you're right. Thanks a lot mate.
01:07No worries, thanks Greg.
01:09Have a look at this. This is something special. Mark Willis has got it crossed up coming into Turn 1.
01:15He did that every single lap on a fantastic ride. A great effort to come from the back of the field right up into 7th position after that terrible crash that he had on the opening lap.
01:25He put in a really good one. Now speaking of bikes, more action coming to you on Network 10 tonight from Jerez in Spain.
01:31It's Round 3 of the World 500cc Championship. Charlie Check is on pole in front of his local crowd.
01:37Please join Billy Woods and Barry Sheen for that. It should be some great action but check your local guides for the time.
01:43Here is Privateer entry. Greg Crick and the Ericsson Trust Bank Commodore as we have a look at the grid for the third and final race today.
01:51John Bower and Russell Engle they'll share the front row. Craig Lowndes and Larry Perkins the second. That should be some fireworks in that one.
01:58Scapin Longhurst out of row 3. Row 4 has Dick Johnson and Paul Romano lining up.
02:03Have a look at the finishing positions of some of these guys. A great effort by Darren Hossack there in 11th and Steve Ellery in 12th.
02:10Ben Seton after that engine change. He's way back in the audio. He's having a tough day too.
02:15Tratton 17, Reid 18, Crick 19. We go back. Rod Nash 21, Gary Portley 23.
02:22I believe Simon Emazidis is in trouble with the rear axle. Jason Barguana he's found himself right back there too.
02:28All of these guys at the back of the pack all did not finish. It was quite a list.
02:33Alan Jones, Steve Johnson, Darren Pate, Danny Osborne, Jason Barguana, Paul Wheel, Kevin Heffernan all did not finish the last race.
02:40It's taking its toll here this tough action today. It's a tough place isn't it? Yeah.
02:44We're getting ready. Keep your eyes on the second row because Lowndes and Perkins have been having a few barnies today.
02:50They've had words in between the last race and now. So there could be some fireworks in this one.
02:56It's a critical race too for these two men. John Bow and Russell Engle.
02:59Engle has closed the gap to a championship leader Lowndes by 10 points. He's only 30 behind now.
03:03And Bow desperately needs to climb up the order as well. This first corner is going to be a cracker.
03:07Get ready. We're ready to do it again. Away we go. A good start by Lowndes on the inside.
03:12Bow's got the jump though. He's got the inside.
03:15Larry's hit Russell Engle. He's hung on to it beautifully. Lowndes goes through. Skate goes through. Up and to the second spot.
03:21Lowndes has got damage too. The front of that car I think he's got a tyre rubbing. Yeah, he's a bit of trouble.
03:26Can you believe that contact between the two Castrol Commodores? Russell Engle.
03:30It was doomy and in tears. I mean Russell, not Russell, but Larry Perkins and Craig Lowndes weren't happy campers between those two races and it struck.
03:40Larry's back there. Engle's up ahead of him, but he's dropped a ton of positions considering he came off the front row.
03:46Mark Scaife's made the best of that one. And a big winner too is Dick Johnson up into third. That's great.
03:51So too I think one of the wins cars, Hossackett could be, who's up there. Bright's up there as well.
03:55So a lot of people benefiting from that first corner incident. It was unbelievable.
03:59The two Castrol Commodores coming together. Scaife was a very big winner out of that one.
04:04Have a look at the replay. First corner. Watch Perkins. Now this is from the back of John Bow's car.
04:09Looking at Lowndes there and Larry Perkins. They both come across. Larry has come across. He's moved.
04:17The two of them have touched the front wheel. Look at the front wheel locked up straight ahead.
04:22And obviously he's hit Russell. Oh, there's Russell coming back at Lowndes. That's a big one.
04:30Here it is from the top angle. Now Larry Perkins did get away to an excellent start.
04:34A brilliant start. But then it all got too close. And that's where the contact was made.
04:38Contact between the Castrol Commodore and the Holden Racing Team car.
04:41Anthony Tratt.
04:42Cannoned off it. Ingle on the outside. He got the worst deal in that one. He's back to about eighth position.
04:47He's waiting for the field to come across the start finish line this time around.
04:50But there's the order. Bow, it is in command. Scaife, Dick Johnson in third position.
04:53Bright back in fourth. Ingle, Longhurst, Hossack, Romano, Ellery and Seton.
04:58Well, it's an interesting top ten now. It's awfully mixed up, isn't it?
05:01Here is the point score for today after two races. Ingle and Bow tied on 76 apiece.
05:06Perkins and Lowndes tied on 66 apiece.
05:09In the pits, look at this. Lowndes is gone. And look, there's Perkins as well.
05:13So that's shocking for Craig Lowndes' championship hopes.
05:16They're replacing the front spoiler, which is jammed and he's away now.
05:19But half of it's still missing. So they had to clear that away from the tyre.
05:23Looks like it's dragging on the ground too, Greg. Yep.
05:25We're anticipating some fireworks, aren't we?
05:28Larry Perkins back in the action. He's really been in the panel crunch-ups today.
05:31Well, it's all getting a little bit silly, I reckon, at the start of that race.
05:34You know, it's all one thing, but there's points at stake here.
05:37And Russell didn't benefit from that at all either.
05:40Well, have a look at that. We'll go through the top ten again for you.
05:42It is a very interesting top ten. Bow, Scaife, Dick Johnson, Jason Bright.
05:46Ingle is back in fifth. Longhurst sixth.
05:48Now, Darren Hossack in the winds car is up into seventh. Romano, Ellery and Seton.
05:53It's pretty mixed up.
05:54Well, there's three guys at the front there. Lowndes.
05:56He slipped right to the back of that order.
05:59We've got Perkins back there too, but here's the back of the line.
06:02Tom Bauer coming under pressure from Mark Scaife.
06:05And the whole racing team, Mobile One, Commodore.
06:08This will be an important run for Scaife. He's had a wretched run so far today.
06:11If he can pick up a bag full of points in this third heat,
06:13he can keep his championship chase alive.
06:15Yeah, Dick Johnson would be happy at the moment too.
06:17He's up into third spot behind Mark Scaife.
06:19Doing well. Jason Bright is quite a distance back.
06:21So no pressure on Dick at the moment.
06:23That's certainly opened the front of the field up.
06:25And the amount of air under that whole racing team, Commodore,
06:28as he comes through the corners.
06:29Really hiking that inside wheel up over the kerbs.
06:32There's two shell helix Falcons. That's unreal.
06:35I mean, Dick Johnson's been pounding away all day.
06:37Doing a really good job. And look where he is now in third spot.
06:41So let's talk about order now.
06:42There's your leading trio.
06:43The Shell Sandwich with the Mobile One, Commodore of Mark Scaife.
06:46In between them, Jason Bright.
06:47He's back in fourth position, about 1.3 seconds behind this battle.
06:50Engel still back there in fifth.
06:52So Engel will be pushing really hard.
06:54Let's hope his car is not damaged.
06:56We'll see how they shape up as they come across the start-finish line this time around.
07:00But we ride with Dick Johnson.
07:02Five times Australian Touring Car Champ.
07:04He sits third there.
07:05It's a good shot to indicate to you and illustrate to you the spacing.
07:09And there is Hossack in behind Longhurst.
07:12John Faulkner, meanwhile.
07:13He's just dropped out with a broken rear axle.
07:15So John's having a pretty tough day today as well.
07:17Here's Tony Longhurst.
07:19Up behind his Castro Holden counterpart, Russell Engel.
07:25So a real mix-up there at the start.
07:27Russell Engel, he wouldn't have expected to be around fifth in this third heat.
07:31But anything can happen at that first tight, frantic corner.
07:35Longhurst in sixth position.
07:37The exact same spot as where he finished in the previous race.
07:41He's been having a good, consistent run today.
07:43He's been mixed up in a few mingles as well.
07:45We watch Russell Engel.
07:46The eyes tell the story.
07:48Well, he's 4.5 seconds behind Jason Bright, who's in fourth position.
07:51And he's another three seconds down the road behind the leading battle.
07:54So he's still got to make up a few seconds here.
07:58He's got a lot of work ahead of him and not a lot of time to do it.
08:01Meanwhile, Larry Perkins is back in 29th position.
08:03Lowndes in 30th.
08:04Let's have a look at the shell.
08:05Helix replay. Bang!
08:06Contact behind Donagher.
08:07Melinda Price.
08:08Melinda had a great run in heat too.
08:10Finished up in 22nd position.
08:12She kept it on the straight and narrow.
08:14So that was good to see her not turning around there.
08:16Yep. Well done.
08:17Greg Crick was a winner there.
08:21He dodged through and picked up a couple of positions.
08:23As we look at Russell Engel now, he's got a lot on the line here.
08:26Not only championship points, but it's going to spoil a pretty good record.
08:29Since the Australian Grand Prix support event races earlier this year,
08:34he has not been outside the top three.
08:37That's how consistent he's been running this year.
08:39That's how you win championships.
08:40He's had something like eight firsts, three seconds.
08:43Sorry, three thirds and a second.
08:45It's been an unbelievable run.
08:47Look at that wheel.
08:49On the inside there and on the outside.
08:52Mark escapes Commodore, locking up the tyre just about every time he goes into a corner.
08:56The car seems to be performing a little bit better than what it did earlier in the day.
09:00So that must have made some changes.
09:01Mark will probably be a bit happier with the performance so far.
09:04So hopefully he can stay where he is.
09:05By the look of it, Russell Engel is the fastest man on the track now.
09:08He's just done a 1.24.1.
09:09Our race leader, a 1.24.9.
09:11So Engel trying desperately to close the gap.
09:13He has closed the two.
09:14He's down to 3.6 seconds behind Jason Bright in fourth position.
09:17So it's going to be interesting to see if he can make any more headway before this race is completed.
09:22Big burger in the field.
09:23Jason Barguana has come from 29th up to 14th position.
09:27So he's made up 15 spots.
09:29He is hot to trot.
09:30Have a look at Dick Johnson on Mark Scaife.
09:32Things are getting nice and hot there for that second position.
09:35Dick could be enjoying himself.
09:36And Jason Bright's come right up into the action as well.
09:38He is closer, right up on the back of Scaife now.
09:41Look at this.
09:42Oh, he's done.
09:43Oh, no.
09:44Oh, over the grass, too.
09:49I think he realised he was in a bit of trouble there, too.
09:52He got so far in, didn't he, Greg?
09:54And he thought, well, I'm going to be able to ripple strips over the grass or something.
09:57So he's pulled his nose back out of the trough.
09:59But he's going to have another go for sure.
10:00Hey, guys, have a look at who is looming in the background.
10:02Engel pulled up a tremendous amount of ground, courtesy of that little incident.
10:06So, obviously, Bright, we were talking about Bright.
10:08He's right there now.
10:09But watch at the top of the screen, if we can get a look.
10:11Maybe not.
10:12That shot there.
10:13Engel is right in here.
10:14Well, what's happening?
10:15I think you'll see, Scaife.
10:16He's right there.
10:17As all the Bridgestone runners this year have been struggling with these tyres.
10:20They're not working the way they want them to.
10:21And you're getting a big build-up behind.
10:22Look at that on the Shell Helix replay.
10:24Steve Reid.
10:25Darren Pate.
10:26Darren Pate.
10:27Alan Jones in the Komatsu Ford just sneaking on through as well.
10:30I tell you what, there's been more spins this weekend.
10:33There he is, Russell Engel.
10:34Shell Helix on board camera.
10:36You can see him just sitting in behind the Pertec Falcon of Jason Bright.
10:40He knows how important it is to get those points because, obviously,
10:43the gap he'll know lounces way, way down the back.
10:45His team would have told him by now.
10:47And he needs to get as many as possible to close that championship.
10:50Look at him behind the back of Brighty now.
10:53I think it's only a matter of time.
10:55He's got a hot arm.
10:56A great battle here.
10:57John Bauer is still in command, and he's doing it quite nicely out in front.
11:01And then we have this battle here of Scaife, Dick Johnson, Jason Bright,
11:04and Russell Engel.
11:05Longhurst is still sick.
11:06Romano 7th, Ozak 8th, Ellery 9th, and Zeke 10th.
11:11Steven Johnson right back there.
11:12He's caught his way up from 32nd last position on the grid up to 11th.
11:16Can you believe that?
11:17He had to make an engine change.
11:18The engine dropped onto seven cylinders in heat 2.
11:20What an empathized team to make that engine change.
11:22The new team in the series, and they've done that already,
11:24so that's fantastic.
11:25So Steven Johnson really fighting back in the racing for life.
11:28Falcon.
11:30Scaife is really racing for life here too.
11:33We've got this weight train behind him.
11:35Russell Engel, the enforcer, switches the lights on.
11:38Going to fill up the mirrors on the Pertec Falcon.
11:41As he tries to make up positions, let's look at this replay.
11:44Mark Larkham inside of Garth Tander.
11:47That's twice.
11:49Oh, no.
11:50These two might have – oh, look at the damage done in front of the car.
11:53Well, he's got a lot of damage in front of his car.
11:55Did someone just hit a bit?
11:56Yeah.
11:57We have a look at Jason Bright now.
11:58Russell Engel on in pursuit lap 7 of 15.
12:01So we're around about halfway.
12:05Can Jason Bright hang in there?
12:06Can Dick Johnson get past Mark Scaife?
12:08There's a whole heap of stories and scenarios and situations.
12:14Dick Johnson right up behind the bumper of Car 50.
12:17Mark Scaife will not be wanting to give this spot away, that's for sure.
12:20He will fight right to the line.
12:23He's got Russell Engel, Jason Bright, Dick Johnson right up behind him.
12:28Tremendous battle here.
12:29There's the Castrol Falcon and Tony Longhurst up the climb.
12:31He's coming up in the end.
12:33Here comes Russell.
12:36So Engel's found himself back in the lead pack.
12:38But, boy, he's got a lot of work to do if he wants to make up positions.
12:40That's some tough territory up ahead of him.
12:42Well, as we've seen on this track, it's one thing catching him,
12:44but then you've got to get past.
12:45We've got a great battle going on here.
12:47Longhurst has come up into it now.
12:49He's stepped up to the plate.
12:50There's Paul Romano, a great effort by Paul.
12:52He's in seventh position in the unsponsored car.
12:55It's being funded by his father, BAP.
12:58Let's hope someone can get on board.
13:00This guy is getting better and better every round.
13:02And Darren Hosack in the wins car in behind him.
13:04So the young guys are well represented.
13:07Clear top order, Scaife.
13:09He's back there in second position, still trying to rebound.
13:12Johnson in third.
13:13Then it's Bright, Engel, Longhurst, Romano.
13:15Here he is, the man on top speed.
13:16He's in seventh.
13:17Hosack in eighth.
13:18Now Murray in ninth and Seaton just hanging on in tenth position.
13:20Oh!
13:22Lowns.
13:23Sorry, Lowns.
13:24Lowns is having a shocker.
13:26Isn't that amazing how your day can turn around like that?
13:28He was putting in a good, consistent run, picking up points.
13:31Now that big hole in that front spoiler is going to be tough work for him.
13:35It is still plenty of biff and barge here at the rural Victorian Circuit.
13:39Bow, Scaife, Johnson, Bright, Engel.
13:41That's your top five.
13:42More on ten right after this.
13:44Welcome back to Winter Motor Raceway.
13:46Do you want them?
13:47Can you get them any closer than this?
13:49This is Scaife's second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth.
13:52Keep on going back as long as you like.
13:54Mark Scaife is in the hot seat at the moment.
13:56Dick Johnson still in pursuit, still endeavoring to find a way past the mobile 1HRC Commodore,
14:01but he can't quite do it.
14:03Well, the freight train has just lied to run behind these guys, not behind Scaife at the moment.
14:07He seems to just be off the pace ever so slightly, and these guys have closed right up.
14:11His lap times are just a couple of tenths off what Dick's doing.
14:14He's doing a good job holding these guys out right now.
14:17Well, let's see what's he going to do.
14:19Russell.
14:20Russell, Engel, I'm not sure if he's aware of it,
14:22but if he finishes in fifth position today...
14:24He's got him, he's got him.
14:25He got him, too.
14:27Well, there's going to be some action in a couple of laps.
14:29So that moves him up to fourth position now.
14:32If Lowndes stays out of the points, we're not sure where he is on the track at the moment,
14:35that'll put Engel in the lead of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship.
14:38So Engel, really fighting...
14:39You can see the car speed here, the difference in car speed.
14:41He's definitely holding Dick up, and Dick is looking for a way past.
14:44The car's carrying so much more speed through those corners.
14:46But as we've seen John Bow do on a number of occasions, he's got the territory.
14:51Look at Russell, he's caught up that 20-odd metres or 30 metres in a matter of corners.
14:55This is going to be fascinating.
14:56This is going to be good.
14:57How would you like to be in Dick Johnson's shoes at the moment?
15:00He's watching Engel and trying to get past Skabe.
15:02Things are tough.
15:03They come down into the left-hander, the new part of the circuit.
15:05See, the problem is now Dick is the one that's really in trouble
15:08because he can't make a move on Skabe unless it's definitely going to happen,
15:12otherwise Russell's going to fill the hole.
15:14So now he's going to be defensive.
15:15So now he's really in a hiding to nothing.
15:18You can imagine Russell's brain at the game at a million miles an hour.
15:20He's checking out every possible opportunity he's got to try and get inside the shell for him.
15:24Have a go at Skabe.
15:25He's in a hurry. He'll be doing something awfully quickly.
15:27Lap 10 of 15. We've still got plenty of time left.
15:30He's been very fast here all weekend.
15:31He ducks out of the draft, has a look down the outside as they brake hard for the esses.
15:35Johnson, equal to the task.
15:37Skabe just up in front of him, looks the wheel up in the air.
15:40Look at the run he got out of that corner.
15:42Fastest five laps from this race, 1.24.
15:44Dick covers the inside, he goes down.
15:46Whoa, side by side.
15:48But he has the run.
15:49And he's got him.
15:50What a nice move too, very clean.
15:53So tidy.
15:54Oh, and Dick's going to lose out again.
15:55Yes, he does too.
15:56Big credit to Dick there though.
15:58He gave Russell plenty of room.
16:00Absolutely, it's a shame he actually lost that second spot because he didn't deserve that.
16:03Well, I'll tell you what, you've got to hand it to Engel, don't you?
16:05Talk about aggression.
16:06He's just moved his way through the field.
16:07Two of the top competitors in the field.
16:09He's sliced his way through.
16:10He's carrying that speed.
16:11So he's going to have Mark Skabe in his gun, so it's pretty soon too.
16:14So Longhurst now moves up into fourth spot.
16:16He's well placed.
16:17That's his best run.
16:18This is a fantastic run for the Castrol Four team.
16:20Tony, ever the trier, hasn't quite had the product.
16:23Certainly been struggling getting a race package that he wanted.
16:26But worked very, very hard with Yokohama over the summer.
16:29And this car has been getting stronger and stronger as the years progress.
16:32We're halfway now in the championship and this car is looking very, very competitive.
16:35Well, while Dick Johnson's going very well up the front, so too is his son, Stephen,
16:39has come from 32nd to 11th position.
16:42Well done, Stephen.
16:43Well done, Stephen Johnson.
16:44In the racing for line 40, he's done extremely well.
16:47So too, Bargwana is up into 12th from 29th.
16:51And the gap between John Bow and Mark Skabe is wide out.
16:53Bow is controlling the race from the front very comfortably.
16:56It's almost six seconds to lead that Bow has now in the lead.
16:58It's got vital championship points as he tries to close the gap on the points table.
17:03But here's the real battle.
17:04Ningle trying to close the gap to Skabe.
17:06Trying to grab that second position before this race is over.
17:08How over the moon would Yokohama be with Tony Longhurst sitting up there in fourth spot?
17:12That is great for Tony.
17:14Well done to the Queenslander.
17:15Top privateer is the 18-year-old rookie, Paul Wheel.
17:19Going exceptionally well.
17:20Well, Skabe is a real fighter.
17:22He will work so hard to keep Ningle out of that position.
17:25But if he's struggling for grip,
17:26Russell will just see the opportunity the way he sniffed one out on John Bow in the previous heat.
17:33Up the outside of Mark Skabe.
17:35Well, and it's getting close.
17:36And look at Longhurst all over the back of Russell too, which he'll be very aware of.
17:40He can't let him sneak up the inside anywhere and get a better move here.
17:43So, he'll be wanting to get past Skabe as quick as possible and get a gap on these guys.
17:48Sit down.
17:49Roto on board camera.
17:51You can see Skabe right up on the ripple steps there.
17:53Russell Long!
17:55He's on the outside.
17:57Trying everything he can to intimidate Skabe.
17:59But Skabe, very experienced racer.
18:01He's just holding that one right up the middle of the track and making sure Ningle has to go the long way around.
18:05Well, Russell's in the same position as Dick Johnson was not that long ago.
18:09Now, we've just got word through Lounge has retired.
18:12He is out of the points.
18:13That's good news for Russell and Ningle.
18:15It's bad news for Mobile XRT.
18:17Oh, look at this.
18:18Real knuckle stuff.
18:19The elbows are out.
18:20And look on the...
18:21Just a quarter glimpse on the back and poor Romano's catching up.
18:24What a drive from him.
18:25He's latched on the back of these guys in seventh spot.
18:28What an effort.
18:29Just behind Wright.
18:30There he is.
18:31They come through the Motorsport S's.
18:32Three more laps to run.
18:33How is this going to finish?
18:35Can Ningle get through on Skabe?
18:37Not at the moment.
18:38Well, the crowd on the main straight are going nuts.
18:40You can hear them cheering.
18:41These cars nose to tail.
18:42They're clipping at each other's heels, waiting for Skabe to make the slightest error.
18:46And Ningle will be through.
18:47Look at the amount of pressure this man's enduring in the Mobile 1 Commodore.
18:50He's used up every single inch of this track and more to make sure no one can make it.
18:55That car is definitely in trouble.
18:56You can see the attitude that it's got through the corners.
18:59He's struggling.
19:00How good is this for Tony Longhurst?
19:02That's unreal.
19:03He's going to be so excited.
19:04He's been loving it out there.
19:06This is the view from Russell Ingle's car.
19:11Longhurst, right up.
19:12Now Longhurst has got to be there because Dick's right on his hammer.
19:15There's nothing he can do about that at all.
19:17Nothing he can do.
19:18That's all happening.
19:19Look at this.
19:20He's on the outside this time.
19:21Gloves are off here.
19:22Ingle now.
19:23Down the outside.
19:24Look how close that is.
19:26He can sniff that second position.
19:27Skabe the only one.
19:28He's got an overtake to do it.
19:30He's already leading the championship now if he stays in this position.
19:33If he can get another position, that's going to be even better.
19:36Bit of a bit up above.
19:41Russell picked the wrong gear there.
19:43Oh, yeah.
19:44Looking sweet.
19:45Nice work.
19:46Look at Dick's back.
19:48And look at Romano.
19:50He lets on the back of these guys.
19:51The gap has just closed right up.
19:53Payback time for Tony Longhurst there as Dick snatches one back
19:56in similar circumstances to before when he lost his position.
19:59He's got the inside run this time for turn one.
20:05And he's got it back.
20:08Look at that.
20:09Two laps to go.
20:10Boy, oh, boy.
20:11You talk about pressure driving.
20:12Unbelievable amount of pressure in this freight train.
20:14Everyone leaning on each other, waiting for the slightest little mistake.
20:17You see Ingle made one there.
20:19And we believe Mark Skabe has been shown the bad sportsmanship flag.
20:23Well, if that's not going to get him on the red limit, I don't know what will.
20:26Unbelievable stuff.
20:27Here's the view from Dick Johnson's car.
20:29Longhurst working him over.
20:30He's got that position back.
20:31This has been great racing by the four drivers.
20:33Now look at the gap up the front.
20:35Ingle's been able to disappear.
20:37He's all over back to Skabe again now.
20:39What's going to be interesting, too, is whether Ingle's going to fight his way through
20:42or whether Skabe will hold that position before this race is over.
20:45Boy, oh, boy.
20:46There's going to be plenty of contention in the pits when this one shuts down.
20:48Here we go.
20:49Time's running out.
20:50Only a lap and a half left to run.
20:51Russell locked up the rear wheel there.
20:53Now, the bad sportsmanship flag up there just got a bit of weaving,
20:56I think Mark's doing.
20:58Can you explain to the people at home the meaning of the bad sportsmanship flag?
21:01It's basically saying that, you know, the driving that you're doing is,
21:04oh, just look at that,
21:06the driving that you're doing on the circuit is of a bad sportsmanlike behavior
21:10and you're basically slowing up the driver behind you
21:13so it means that it's not satisfactory.
21:15And can he be penalized if he continues to do it?
21:17If he does it again, he can be penalized.
21:19They can give him a blank flag or stop go-to.
21:20So he's got to be very careful that he holds his line
21:23and not change it too often, otherwise he will get it.
21:25And Russell gets the try.
21:27One more lap left to run.
21:28He will pull out of the draft here.
21:30He can't get the inside.
21:31Longhurst is still on his hammer as well.
21:33Three kilometers of bitumen remaining for this.
21:36Paul Romano has got past Jason Bright.
21:38To sixth spot, what an effort.
21:40Tremendous battle.
21:41There is all go here.
21:42You can see Scabie's using every bit of road he can get that car's tires onto
21:46to keep this man out.
21:47Well, he's got about two kilometers to do it.
21:49Russell Ingle has no time.
21:51Let's not forget about our race leader though,
21:53Chun Bao, here he is.
21:54Great work from JB.
21:55He has cleared out right from the word go.
21:57The collision in the first corner helped him tremendously.
22:00He got the jump and he hasn't looked back.
22:05It's been a great run by JB.
22:07A really top effort.
22:10And he's...
22:11Well, look at that.
22:12That shot illustrates it perfectly.
22:13That's how far out in front he is.
22:15He hasn't had a drive like that for a while.
22:16Well, look at this battle for second position.
22:18This is going to be over until they cross that checkered flag.
22:20Russell Ingle really leaning on the Mobil 1 Commodore
22:22as they come out up the back straight for the final time.
22:24He will hold the inside line all the way down the straight.
22:27Now, the thing is, Russell can take the outside line,
22:29but watch out for Locke first.
22:30And he'll get the switch.
22:32Will he get the switch?
22:33He's going to try and stuff it up the inside.
22:35This gate just came across.
22:38This is so tight.
22:39There's our race winner, Chun Bao,
22:40but the real action is happening further down the track.
22:42Well done, JB.
22:43But you've got a real pack of V8s coming down after you.
22:49JB across the line for the win.
22:52Here it is.
22:53The battle for second to the line.
22:55Mark Scaife will hang on.
22:57Only just.
22:58Great work, Russell Ingle there.
23:00Frustrated.
23:01He saw the helmet go down,
23:03but he will come in for third.
23:05What a tremendous race.
23:06That was the pressure driving I've never seen before from Mark Scaife.
23:10I mean, he handled that.
23:11To handle that the way he did
23:12and not get forced off and make a mistake was an effort and a half.
23:16Well, that was maximum pressure, wasn't it?
23:18And he withstood it under very, very difficult circumstances.
23:21It was a holden day last year when the Castrol boys cleaned up,
23:24but it is going to be a shell-forward day today.
23:26John Bao, a great effort, and he got the win.
23:29He's second for today.
23:30Mark Scaife in for second from Russell Ingle.
23:32That was a tremendous battle all race long.
23:34Longhurst and Dick Johnson in for fifth.
23:36Didn't Johnson drive well?
23:37Paul Romano, congratulations, the young Queenslander.
23:40What a drive.
23:41Bright Ellery Seton and Steve Johnson, another terrific effort.
23:45We'll be back right after this to wrap things up.
23:49Well, five rounds down and five to go
23:51in the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship for 1998.
23:54And, more and more, probably a place to battle out the midway session,
23:57the Winton Motor Raceway.
23:58The tight twists and turns always turn on plenty of action.
24:01With our top-placed privateer,
24:02the fifth different winner from five races, it's Malrose.
24:08That's a great effort.
24:09You're a real battler,
24:10and it's really good to see you up here on the podium.
24:12Well done.
24:13Yeah, thanks, Mark.
24:14I'd like to thank the McGrath Holder Group and Fairfax Newspapers
24:16and my volunteer crew.
24:17We've done it tough this weekend, and getting here has been a bit of a miracle.
24:22Thanks to the guys today.
24:23I can't name you all.
24:24You know who you are.
24:25Thanks very much, guys.
24:26It's been great to be here.
24:28Congratulations, Malrose.
24:29Good to see you up on the podium.
24:30Well done.
24:31Third place today, and it really was a struggle.
24:33Boy, he was in the wars,
24:34particularly that first corner of the first heat,
24:36but he's come back a great fight back, too, from Mark Scaife.
24:42Wow.
24:43Let me see some action today.
24:44And you were really on the receiving end of some of that.
24:46Well, I copped a bit of a mauling for most of the day,
24:48and even in the last race.
24:49So I don't know who crashed into the back of the most,
24:51but it was a really good race,
24:52and obviously after qualifying we were disappointed
24:54that we didn't get a better result, Mark.
24:55So we'll go back to the workshop and try again.
24:58That last heat looked like the toughest one.
24:59Boy, they were climbing all over you.
25:01Yeah, Russell and Dick.
25:02I mean, it was just a feast, wasn't it?
25:04But to be fair, they were really good about it.
25:06There was a couple of touches, but nothing untoward.
25:08It was great.
25:09Well done, Scaife.
25:10Good to see you back in the championship battle.
25:11In second place today,
25:12and I'll remind you too,
25:13this now puts him in the lead of the Shell Championship,
25:15Russell Engle.
25:22Were you aware of that when you were driving out there
25:24that if you got better than fifth,
25:25you'd take Lowndes' points lead away?
25:27Oh, look, my main man got on the radio there
25:30and said that Lowndes had gone out,
25:31so after that I sort of thought,
25:32look, I've got to finish this race,
25:34but I thought, nah, bugger it,
25:36get in amongst it and have a bit of a go.
25:38No, look, it was really good fun.
25:40Like Mark said,
25:41you've got to have a bit of a go
25:42and a bit of panel bashing,
25:43and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
25:45It was really good fun.
25:46I think what you've proved today
25:47is a lot of people say it's very hard to pass at Winton,
25:48but you seem to make it look easy.
25:50I don't know about easy,
25:51but, look,
25:53the cars are so competitive
25:55and so even now
25:57that if you have a go, you can get past.
25:59Well done, Russell.
26:00Real battler, Russell Engle.
26:01Right now I'd like to call on Ross Brodie,
26:02the motorsport manager for our series sponsor, Shell,
26:05to make the presentation to our overall winner today,
26:07John Bower.
26:12I'm not surprised to see you've got a grin
26:14about as big as a Cheshire cat.
26:16The Fords are back in form.
26:17Well done.
26:18Well, thank you.
26:19I haven't had one of these for a while.
26:20It's a bit of a new experience for me this year,
26:22so it's terrific.
26:23The car was great.
26:24We had a problem in the first race
26:25and Lee Guy, my engineer,
26:27sussed it out for me
26:28and the other two races were fantastic,
26:30so thanks to everybody in the Shell team.
26:32They did a wonderful job.
26:33And Malala coming up in a few weeks' time,
26:35is that going to suit your car too, you think?
26:37I don't know.
26:38It's so competitive now,
26:39you don't really know what's going to go on.
26:40You can be first one week and tenth the next,
26:42so that's the beauty of the V8 supercar.
26:44John Bower really fighting back in the Shell Series for 1998.
26:47The big winner at Wyndham Motor Raceway this afternoon.
26:52Well, there's no doubt that the championship is wide open.
26:55Russell Ingle now stands at the top from Craig Lowndes.
26:57We didn't really expect that.
26:59When Lowndes, he had a 40-point lead.
27:01It's certainly helped John Bower with that win today.
27:03He rockets up into the top three.
27:04Perkins, Scaife, Dick Johnson,
27:06Jason Bright is there,
27:07Longhurst, Seaton,
27:09and Jason Barguana rounding out the top ten.
27:11Well, I guess if you have a look at today,
27:12we had a record total number of V8s,
27:14we had a record total number of privateers,
27:16and we had more Biff and Barge than we've ever seen,
27:18and Murph, it was a great day.
27:19Certainly had more Biff and Barge than we've seen for a while.
27:21Amazing racing.
27:22I mean, I haven't seen V8 racing like that for quite some time.
27:25And, you know, I think JB's keeping up the old Ford record
27:28of leading the amount of wins here for Ford versus Holton.
27:31How do you think you would have gone out there today?
27:33Well, I think I probably would have been in the midst of all that carnage somewhere,
27:35but, I mean, yeah, the racing was fantastic.
27:37A lot of just touching and a lot of, you know, close racing,
27:40I think you could put it down to.
27:41Well, we look forward to the next round,
27:42and we're going to be coming your way in three weeks' time,
27:45a three-week break to the next round
27:46of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship.
27:48Round six comes to you from Malala in South Australia.
27:50Same time as always, 3 to 5pm.
27:53So we look forward to that.
27:55We have a bit of a break.
27:56Now, every Sunday, of course,
27:57when you're kicking back on the couch,
27:58you can catch up with Billy Woods and Barry Sheen on RPM,
28:02keep you up to date with everything in Australia
28:04and all the way around the world,
28:06what's happening with motorsport.
28:07Well, it was a really enjoyable day here today.
28:09The fans enjoyed it.
28:10We had a huge crowd.
28:11We look forward to seeing you at Malala
28:13on behalf of Greg Murphy and Marcos Romley-Diffie.
28:15See you then.
29:06.
