“Coconut fiber insulators,” eco-friendly alternative sa styro coolers | 24 Oras

‘Di lang bumabara at nagdudulot ng baha, inaabot din ng libong taon bago matunaw ang styro foam. Para mabawasan ang mga ‘yan, may alternatibong dinevelop ang isang grupo sa Cebu na gawa sa balat ng niyog.

00:00It doesn't just rain and flood, it takes up to a thousand years for the styrofoam to melt.
00:17To reduce that, an alternative was developed by a group in Cebu that was made from nyog skin.
00:24Let's change the game!
00:30In a pan-tropical island like the Philippines, the coconut nuts are in full bloom.
00:37We only have 350 million nyog trees in the country.
00:41That's why the Philippines is the second largest producer in the world.
00:46Coconut can be considered a tree of life because it can be used in many ways.
00:50Our innovation today can also be an eco-friendly alternative to styrofoam.
00:56We visited the Lamat Coco Hub in Cebu Province,
01:01where almost all of the nyog is brought to the province's Kanlurang region.
01:06Here, when a whole coconut arrives, we process it all, so nothing is wasted.
01:16The nyog skin is sent to Fortuna Cools to be made into biodegradable coconut fiber insulators.
01:23The idea was conceived when the group joined the United Nations Development Program Ocean Challenge in 2020.
01:32The goal is to reduce plastic waste in the ocean.
01:36One of the biggest pollutants we encountered is what we call styrofoam.
01:42It cannot be recycled and it's very toxic to our ocean environment.
01:48That's why their winning pitch is to replace styrofoam coolers with a biodegradable one.
01:54The coconut itself has a natural insulation,
01:57so even if it's very hot during the day, when you open the coconut, the water is still cold.
02:02We are now at step number one.
02:05After dumping the coconuts,
02:10the parts of the nyog are first separated.
02:1315,000 ade.
02:16This is coconut, yeah.
02:20The coconut meat will go to the coconut oil.
02:24While the skin is being dried, it will be placed in a decorticating machine to separate the fiber.
02:33The next step is here in the sifting machine where we will separate the husk.
02:44We will now complete the coconut husk fabrics.
02:50Until it reaches the stitching machine,
02:57and will be placed in the heating machine.
03:02But aside from being environment friendly,
03:04coconut insulators are also more durable and effective compared to styrofoam.
03:08They are also more profitable for coconut farmers.
03:11Now, they are studying other ways to use coconut insulators.
03:17There you have it, Kapuso.
03:18A game-changing innovation that can help coconut farmers
03:22and has the potential to have a bigger impact on the environment.
