00:00An ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure, and that's the motto and approach concerned agencies are taking in dealing with an environmental disaster that, if left unchecked, could affect coastal waters from Bataan all the way to Metro Manila, affecting the livelihood of many Filipinos that depend on the viability of the sea to eke out a living.
00:22Claisel Pardidia has the full report.
00:24The Philippine Coast Guard has successfully located the MT Terra Nova, a marine tanker that sank while carrying over one million liters of industrial fuel.
00:37The vessel was discovered submerged at a depth of 34 meters, situated more than three nautical miles from Limay, Bataan, on Thursday.
00:46Currently, the cargo ship is licking oil slicks from its engine.
00:50The tanker's cargo could result in the release of up to 1,400,000 liters of oil, posing a severe environmental threat.
00:59This volume far exceeds the 800,000 liters spilled by the MT Princess Empress last year, which caused widespread damage to coastal communities in Oriental Mindoro.
01:12We're racing against time to siphon the oil so we can avoid the environmental catastrophe.
01:20Based on PCG's projection, leak from the sunken MT Terra Nova could spread to Metro Manila, Cavite, Bulacan and Pampanga, impacting parts of Manila Bay.
01:33This poses a serious threat to local communities where fishing is a primary source of livelihood.
01:40In response, PCG has deployed oil dispersants, oil booms and floating barriers to contain the spread of the oil.
01:49Additionally, three large Philippine vessels have been mobilized and are on standby.
01:55The PCG met with representatives from the company operating the MT Terra Nova.
02:00They laid out and implemented detailed plans to address the situation promptly and to mitigate any environmental impact.
02:08It is said collecting the oil may take up to seven days.
02:12If the weather is good, the divers will be ready so we can see where the ship is positioned.
02:19If it is anchored, anchored or anchored.
02:22Because it would matter a lot if we know the operations of the siphoning.
02:27A joint investigation by Marina and the PCG is also being prepared.
02:32We will see if there are protocols to violate and if there are decision making that are not correct.
02:38We still need to check the documents.
02:40Based on the initial information, there was no public warning advisory when the ship departed from Bataan to Iloilo.
02:48It encountered bad weather near Nasugbu, Batangas which caused it to return but it reportedly suffered damage.
02:55The crew attempted to call for help from another ship but the towline broke resulting in a loss of control over the cargo tank.
03:0316 crew members of the oil tanker have been rescued while one has died.
03:09Kalei Salpardilia for the new and better Philippines.
