00:00Hello and welcome back to the Magpies Nest Newcastle United podcast. We are back for
00:16a new season. We did have a bonus episode which you can go and listen to with the Athletics
00:21Chris Watt. That was about the PSR issues when they occurred plus the signing of Paul
00:26Mitchell as a new sporting director but now me and Jordan are back for a new season.
00:31Jordan himself has just come back from the pre-season trip to Germany and is soon off to
00:35Japan and we'll get through all of that in this podcast. But Jordan how are you? Has it been a
00:39good summer? Yeah I mean it's been a it was a quiet summer until probably the last weekend of
00:46June when all the PSR situation kicked off if you like and then from then on it's just been
00:52very full-on at Newcastle United. Amanda and me had had leave-in and then had Paul Mitchell
00:57come in as sporting director, James Bunce as well as performance director. So yeah it's been a it's
01:02been a busy couple of weeks and it'll get even busier as Newcastle step up their preparations
01:08for the for the new Premier League season but I certainly prefer it to busy rather than being
01:12quiet in the summer months about any football at all. Yes I mean obviously we've had the Euros and
01:16the disappointment of that since then I mean and for other sporting fans we have got the Olympics
01:22to look forward to at the end of this week as well which I'm certainly very much looking forward to
01:25but yeah it's as you say there it was a quiet summer until it wasn't and then it suddenly
01:32became very very not quiet and to be fair though at the moment it's sort of in a little bit in
01:36between obviously we'll get into the anyhow comments that came towards the end of last week
01:41but on the transfer front it is quite quiet even though there's still a few weeks in the transfer
01:45window left but to start with though Jordan you've been a journey recently so maybe I should
01:49have started this podcast with Guten Tag for example but how was Deutschland how was Nuremberg
01:56and how was the adidas headquarters if before we get into the how comments in his interview just
02:00how was the experience? Yeah I mean the adidas headquarters was phenomenal unbelievable facilities
02:07everything you could wish for was there in terms of sporting facilities olympic-sized swimming pool
02:15tennis courts and just everything everything you ever want was there and it was an incredible
02:21place to to see and probably the highlight for me was being able to go into adidas archives
02:28and seeing some very very old gear well that'd be all the castanets shirts and boots
02:37there was even shoe boxes as well trainers it was it was incredible for a sports memorabilia freak
02:44like me being able to see all that so yeah it was on them trips where you don't necessarily
02:50get to see things like that in your standard life sort of go behind the scenes adidas was a
02:55was a real pleasure and you know I hope Newcastle can make that a regular annual trip and hopefully
03:02I can get myself back over there because even though I was there for the for the day there's
03:05still so much to see but yeah incredible facility and it sort of underlines how lucky Newcastle
03:13are to have adidas as their partners and how big adidas are so yeah a really good trip yeah it's
03:20certainly looked at yes I mean one thing that really interested me was some of the old prototype
03:24kits the ones that never got released that were just ideas uh for kits that could have been there
03:28was there was a black and white one which on the front looked really good but then it had an all
03:32black back which to me I wasn't a massive fan of because I and even with the current kit I don't
03:37like no stripes on the back I prefer stripes on the back I don't know what your thoughts on that
03:41are but yes yeah yeah it's but but as I say some of them were really quite interesting ones that
03:48never saw the light of day but are just there um interesting indeed but yeah in terms of the
03:54training sessions though of course you watched some of Newcastle's training how was that
03:59yeah I mean Eddie Howe doesn't quite like joining the Spain on the on the training ground next time
04:03um he's keen to get us off as quickly as possible so we've got to see the opening 15 minutes and
04:09that opening 15 minutes literally was just players running around the pitch and doing a few stretches
04:14and then as soon as we went over to ball work we were turfed off the adidas training pitch and
04:19into the the building at the back where we set up camp for the day in terms of our laptops etc but
04:25yeah it was um look it was it's good it's a privilege to always see things like that um
04:32there was most the players that were there were training for the exception of um Lloyd Kelly,
04:39Joe Willock, Callum Wilson of course left the camp as well who's got a back injury
04:46I doubt whether he will uh start the the season against against Southampton which yeah
04:52Green Jordan, Grass is Green yeah all that stuff yeah yeah so there was I mean on the trip there
04:59was a lot of youngsters and involved as well um but I say all the international players will
05:05I think most like set the return for the trip to to Tokyo um but yeah Newcastle played a game
05:12over there against a German third third tier side they kept that one quiet because even though we
05:16were over there they didn't they didn't tell us that um because they didn't want fans traveling
05:20over which was the the reasoning for for that but yeah they got a run out like Isaac, Barnes
05:28and someone else on the score sheet as well but it was a was it Murphy yes so it was it was a good
05:35good sort of first proper week back in pre-season training and of course now they'll they'll step it
05:41up in the next few weeks when they play Hull on Saturday and then they'll say head to Tokyo which
05:45will come on to later. I mean apart from the Tokyo trip which we will mention it certainly seems like
05:50a more of a low-key pre-season compared to last year because of course they had the big America
05:55trip last year uh which some would say you know tied the players out a bit too much given how
06:00competitive some of those games those games were um it seems a bit more like the pre-season than
06:06what the season before of course they had that trip to Germany Austria was it then and I think
06:11when they did they play Mainz that summer I think and then of course they had the Benfica game as
06:14well but it feels a little more like that sort of bit more in-house bit more low-key yes I've got
06:19Japan which will be a bit more sort of publicized and of course fans will travel out to that but
06:24for the most part does is that sort of do you think what anyhow wants a bit more of a low-key
06:28pre-season where he can just focus and not have the spotlights like they really had on them last
06:32year in America yeah absolutely I think I think the Germany trip was almost as a use as a trade-off
06:39for Newcastle going to Japan because if you go back to last summer Newcastle and anyhow didn't
06:44have that um sort of private time together in terms of being away together um of course he had
06:52the U.S. but that was so full-on it was so commercially driven um traveling between three
06:57different states I think it was so that was a very full-on trip and I think anyhow was disappointed
07:03and probably looking at the season felt that not having that private time of the players actually
07:09impacted Newcastle in the season um I think one of the reasons as to why there were so many injuries
07:13in this way anyhow point there was the fact that um because of that U.S. trip and how how full-on
07:18it was but yeah similar the Austria trip which you mentioned there and this is the season before
07:23they finished in the in the Champions League that's very much what they've done in in Germany
07:26they've went away went to a sort of a private camp in the middle of nowhere um just the players just
07:32the staff etc and anyhow loves that as well he loves spending time with his with his players
07:38and having him himself and just his players to to work with so yeah obviously that's over with now
07:46I think pre-season will step up now they've got the Tokyo trip which in many ways will be similar
07:51to the U.S. last summer where again a little bit it will be commercially driven but
07:55um at least they've had that sort of private time at the start of pre-season um to get themselves
08:00going and then you know they'll have to finish the season or finish pre-season busy because Tokyo
08:05will be so full-on but yeah the Germany trip was was really important for in the eyes of anyhow
08:12I think the difference of the Tokyo trip compared to America last year is obviously
08:16they're not playing other Premier League teams the games are not going to be as competitive as
08:20as those ones were last season I know that obviously they're playing in this event in
08:26Tokyo against some of Japan's best but as I say you're not playing Chelsea you're not playing
08:31Aston Villa you're not playing Brighton and games that even though they shouldn't matter because of
08:35who you're playing they sort of did a little bit and there's that extra edge to them just because
08:39essentially it's like a warm-up Premier League match so yeah I think it's even though it's a
08:43commercial trip it's perhaps not the the full-on in terms of the the energy exerted
08:50that they will have when they go to Japan at the end of this week
08:54but yeah if we now come on to anyhow himself there's quite a lot to get into Jordan now of
09:11course you sat down with him and with the other written reporters to the side of that there was
09:16the the broadcast interviews the TV the radio now if you just watch those you'd think anyhow was
09:23relatively happy he'd sort of pushed aside talk of the England job of course Gareth Southgate left
09:28his post as head of the national team and to be fair even in your interviews it sort of seemed as
09:33if he didn't really want to take that England job in the written ones that wasn't really his
09:39priority but having said that though he still didn't see a very happy man did he
09:46yeah so I want to give a little bit of context on on this and the way sort of the afternoon
09:51played out so Eddie Howe spoke to the written press first and obviously written press is just
09:58recordings and the recordings don't go public it's literally just for our own transcription
10:02in terms of the the written words that you would have seen on Newcastle World and wherever else
10:06you've you've looked at Eddie Howe's interview but yeah it seemed if you look at the Sky Sports
10:12and BBC interviews you would think Eddie Howe was was relatively happy in Newcastle no problems at
10:19all but he didn't paint that picture in the sit down with with myself and the other nine journalists
10:26in the in the room as well he he came across as a man that his demeanor was very unsettled
10:34and was asked sort of questions on his on his future and he kept saying I will stay here as
10:40long as I'm happy he was then asked what will what will it take to make you happy and he started
10:45talking about sort of the he was hinting at the behind the scenes changes and that's what I think
10:49it's came down to I think it's been a big summer of change in Newcastle with Mila Gaddusi and Amanda
10:55Stavely leaving they were two very very close allies to Eddie Howe they were two people that
11:01give Eddie Howe the keys to everything and that first transfer window Eddie Howe along with sort
11:07of Jason Tindall, Amanda and Steve Nixon they ran the transfer window the first ever transfer window
11:13the PIF and obviously saying the likes of Bruno, Dan Byrne, Matt Target and lots of others as well
11:22and then it sort of continued from there where Eddie Howe did have total full say and total
11:27control over over transfers and I think that's there's a restructure behind the scenes with
11:33Paul Mitchell coming in and I think Eddie Howe his fear on that he has lost a lot of control in terms
11:38of incomings which I understand from his point of view because look he's controlled the transfers
11:45for I think it's four or five transfer windows now and he would probably say that being a
11:50being a success certainly the success on the field has been has been good and look from 19
11:56for the Premier League to finishing fourth in the Premier League qualifying for the Champions
12:02League that's huge success so Eddie Howe probably feels like he's earned the right to have total
12:08control of our transfers but I do think the appointment of Paul Mitchell will change that
12:13slightly now I do think Eddie Howe will have the final say on transfers but I do think
12:18Paul Mitchell given his sort of recruitment background you think about some of the signings
12:22that he's made and the likes of Tottenham, Monaco with Southampton you think about Sadio Mane,
12:27Son, Christopher Mkuku at RB Leixic when he worked for the Red Bull group as well
12:32so I think it would be really silly of Newcastle not to tap into Paul Mitchell's knowledge
12:37and I do think there should be a balanced stroke where Paul Mitchell can submit a list to Eddie
12:42Howe and Eddie Howe essentially you know ticks off the ones that he's interested in ones that
12:46he isn't interested in and I do think that's how it'll play out but as of Saturday or sorry Friday
12:52we spoke to Eddie Howe I don't think he was quite sure as to how the new structure would play
12:56out and what it meant for his responsibilities so that's in terms of transfers and then of course
13:02the second appointment which arrived shortly after Paul Mitchell is James Bunce who has been
13:09brought in a performance director and whatever way you want to look at it it's sort of a level
13:14of scrutiny for Eddie Howe in terms of you know the training methods and how that sort of translates
13:22to injuries so now you've got a new direct line from Eddie Howe to James Bunce looking at training
13:30and looking at ways where you can almost you know look at injury prevention and all that things as
13:36well so I understand why Eddie Howe had his back up about that because Eddie Howe is a man that
13:43has inherited his backroom team since his ball mouth days like say Stephen Purchase,
13:47Simon Wellaston the only person that has came in from the outside really is Graham Jones
13:54beyond that it's been Eddie Howe and his staff for you know the last 10 years plus so someone
13:59coming in from the outside I think that probably made Eddie Howe a little bit uneasy but I think
14:05as I say that was Friday I think there's been clear the air talks since then and I do think
14:11the next time we speak to Eddie Howe he'll be a little bit clearer and a little bit more positive
14:15as to you know his role and responsibilities but yeah it was certainly an interesting half an hour
14:20with Eddie Howe because I've never seen him like that before he's usually quite crystal clear on
14:25his message unless you ask him about injuries but yeah on Friday he was yeah he looked a little bit
14:33unsettled unsure as to what his role was under this new structure but as I say I think since then
14:40more talks have taken place and hopefully now everyone can move in the right direction and
14:46really attack the summer transfer window because Newcastle they're in my opinion still have a lot
14:51of work to do in terms of bringing in new players ahead of the ahead of the new Premier League season
14:56they do yes and we'll come on to that in just a moment's time but yeah it was interesting wasn't
15:00it because of course as you say there you're not used to seeing Eddie Howe like this he's not that
15:04type of character normally to sort of use the media or the press to get his points across in terms of
15:12to those at the club who he's working with surely or normally you think that sort of internal
15:17discussions that go on and they're never normally made public because as far as Newcastle don't like
15:22leaks to go out but it was very much a public front from Eddie Howe using people like yourself to
15:29tell people with other people within the club what he thought or the dissatisfaction that he had with
15:34the way things had gone on so I mean some of some fans on social media you know they thought nothing
15:40of it and perhaps they had only watched the tv interviews but yeah I mean just from being in the
15:46room with him Jordan not just going off what he said but like what was his body language like what
15:50was his sort of demeanour like? Yeah I mean his demeanour was a very very unsettled person
15:57there's no there's no way about it and I he denied that he was unsettled but he certainly wasn't a man
16:02that appeared happy in that and I say that having sat in a room with Eddie Howe on several occasions
16:07since he's been at the club every Friday I get the honour of sitting with Eddie Howe
16:11previewing their weekend matches and as I say I've never really seen him like that
16:19so yeah his demeanour was off and that wasn't just me that was that who thought that there
16:25was other journalists in the room that thought that and his answers because if you go through
16:29the the full transcript they'll be part of the transcript where you read his answer and you think
16:34oh he's very very happy at Newcastle there's no problems at all and then his next answer you
16:39place a little bit of doubt into your head over how happy he really is and again after Eddie Howe
16:47left the room myself and other journalists in there debated for about two or three hours as
16:52to how to attack what Eddie Howe had said because it was so what he said was like so confusing and
16:58so different in every answer and I say that isn't Eddie Howe because he's usually quite crystal
17:04he's message so yeah I think I think he came into the the interview with with us
17:10with the intention of probably using us as to try and gain a little bit of power I don't think he
17:15came in I think he came in to to open the um yeah use us a little bit of a power play if you like
17:22and get his his message out and look I think that's uh I think that's probably probably worked
17:28and yeah it just shows that um you know maybe myself and the written journalists do have uh
17:34some uh use these days rather than sort of just the tv interviews because yeah the tv and bbc
17:40radio interview on bbc radio newcastle they're painting a very different different picture but
17:46it was all sunshine and flowers with there wasn't it it was all very happy and just
17:50yeah I think I think more on on tv interviews naturally you don't get as much time to
17:56just sort of question and follow up what Eddie Howe has said because you know you get a set time
18:00in tv and you've probably got four or five topics that you need to get through and whereas we got
18:05essentially half an hour with him and um yeah when he sat down we initially probably thought
18:11Eddie Howe was gonna um rule himself out of the England job and I think he has done that I don't
18:18I don't think he's going to go to England I don't think that's a burning desire inside of him I just
18:22think he left his future open didn't shut the door on on sort of leaving Newcastle and I do
18:29think that was almost as I say a power play to try and get his message across and I think that's
18:34worked I think from hopefully from now um the club have had conversations with Eddie Howe it's all
18:39sort of resolved and yeah we can can move on and look forward to to the new season. You'd hope so
18:46Elyse yes now before we get onto the transfer window there was also interviews I believe
19:00conducted with Neil Livermanto, Lloyd Kelly and Lewis Hall I don't know if you were in many of
19:05those Jordan or any or if or all of them but uh how were they and if if you were then like how did
19:11they go? Yeah I was there I interviewed all three of them I sat with um Kieran Kelly with the
19:16Chronicle, Matthew Raisbeck from BBC Newcastle and their fellow colleague Liam Kennedy as well so
19:23yeah I mean out of them them interviews really got to speak to Lloyd Kelly and you know hear about
19:28his sort of story now he got on Newcastle because um he was a player oh sorry he was a a child that
19:35was actually brought on the foster care system which was quite you know emotional hearing that
19:40story from from where Lloyd Kelly's came from so an incredible story for him to be signing for
19:45for Newcastle this summer I know spoke about how big the club is how much he's looking forward to
19:50playing at St James' Park having previously experienced it with with Hornmouth um team
19:56Livermanto the the question around him was more about sort of the right back spot and you know
20:01does he say the right back spot is something he should be grasping so on a permanent basis this
20:07summer he sort of played that down saying he's still only 21 he's got time to to develop but
20:13I think uh I do think team Livermanto will have much more of a starting role this summer it'll be
20:19sorry this season it'll be a very very big season for him in my my opinion especially with the
20:23um question marks around Kieran Trippiar's future but even if Kieran Trippiar stays he's you know
20:27he's 34 at the end of the year um probably at points that season should um moments of
20:37moments of decline in many ways um because he's you know he's in his late he's near retirement
20:42age now to be honest so team Livermanto for me that's his starting spot and it's up to him to
20:48grasp it and then yeah I really enjoyed speaking to Lewis Hall out of out of three if I had to pick
20:52one it would be Lewis Hall's sort of my favourite interview because I just think he's a really
20:55really nice lad and spoke about his struggles last season and the opening six month how he had
21:01dark days etc not you know coming to a new club moving away from home not getting the game time
21:07fans asking why he's not playing there's obviously doubt over the the clause and to trigger a permanent
21:13deal but yeah it was really nice that he had sort of behind the scenes to how his journey played out
21:17last season particularly at the end as well when he did come into the the team and was probably the
21:23sort on the shining lights at the end of last season and it left back so yeah it was um it's
21:28always good to get that sort of sit down with players because you don't really get that during
21:33the season no um so it was yeah and them trips are brilliant like that so even with Eddie Howe you
21:39don't really get much time to to sit with him when the camera isn't on and then players as well it's
21:44always after games when he's speaking the mix on the they're dying to go home so yeah it was um
21:49it was really good to see to get that get the time with Eddie Howe and those three players
21:54yeah I I thought as I say as you say there Jordan it's it's um it's rare that players speak sort of
22:00mid-season as I say mixed zone interviews do happen but they're perhaps not not exactly you
22:05know they're not they're not brilliant content all the eight times but um yeah um I enjoyed I I've
22:11watched all that the the broadcast well I mean if you were sat with Riz I presume that's what
22:15you it was within your piece as well the rate yeah because I I watched those ones so um
22:22yeah all three just you know so they seem sort of down to earth lads didn't they and I know
22:27football football has got a lot of stick these days for some of them being
22:30having inflated egos or whatnot but those three just seem generally three nice lads to me
22:36yeah they were yeah they really were um that's I mean it's probably from the outside look and then
22:41you think footballers are you know fairly sort of arrogant etc but you know they're just a lot
22:48of them are very very down to earth and just and just normal people and those three lads definitely
22:53definitely were um all got similar ambitions as well you think about Lewis Hall and Tino
22:59Livermanto still at a very young age very similar age both got England ambitions Newcastle could
23:06potentially have two players there who are leading Newcastle at leading England's full
23:10back spots in the next few years if things progress well and then you've got a player like
23:15Lloyd Kelly who as I mentioned earlier is a is a lad that's came through the foster
23:20system and you know became a Premier League footballer at Newcastle United and
23:24if he can keep fit this season then there's no reason why he shouldn't be pushing the England
23:30conversation as as well so yeah as I say three very nice lads and you know hopefully they'll
23:36bring plenty of success to Newcastle this season very much so yes
23:50now we'll finally get onto the transfer window uh we'll start with someone who you mentioned
23:54just a moment ago that is Kieran Trippier in terms of outgoings um he is probably likely
24:00to leave according to a lot of reports uh I think there's Saudi interest and you know
24:05towards the twilight of his career is it just a case of one final big payday?
24:10Well yeah I mean essentially yeah um I got information back in the start of February
24:16that there was there was going to be interest from Saudi clubs this summer and you know as
24:20we're getting close I think to the towards a deadline if you like and after Kieran Trippier
24:25has finished the Euros those noises are becoming a little bit louder um I think probably in hindsight
24:32given the way out the second half of the season played out and Kieran Trippier didn't play much
24:37many games hindsight you probably would have parted ways with him in January but at the time
24:44it didn't it didn't feel right and I don't blame Newcastle for keeping hold of him because you know
24:49he's a he's a leader being a great player for for the club and I do think there's merit in keeping
24:56him around this summer as well I still think he's got a lot to to offer but from Kieran Trippier's
25:01point of view now as I mentioned earlier he turns 34 in September I think it is and got one year left
25:06on his contract from a personal point of view if he if the offer does come in from a Saudi pro
25:12league club then you know that's life-changing money and you can probably go and earn enough
25:18money out there in one year that you would probably do in sort of three years over here I feel like
25:22um because it's the Saudi money is life-changing hence why a lot of players have made the move
25:28over there a lot of players that were in the you know peak of their careers have moved over there
25:33for for the money which you know it is a foot as a football fan you don't like hearing that
25:39football is money driven but essentially it is um so I think for Kieran Trippier as I say he's
25:45what more is he going to achieve in his career now he's probably achieved everything he can
25:50playing Champions League playing for England and European finals World Cup semi-finals
25:57look maybe he might stay this season in Newcastle might decide to mount a title
26:00charge or something like that but and of course that's that's what you're thinking so
26:04yeah I think Kieran Trippier from a personal point of view is in a is in a difficult situation and
26:09if an offer does come in from the Saudi pro league then he's got a decision to make and I'm sure if
26:15he does decide to to go to the Middle East then he leaves with everyone's blessing because
26:19you know he's been a transformative signing for this club that the first of the you can say he
26:24was the first yeah he was the first and he's he's been out outstanding but as I say the Newcastle
26:30guy right back there in team Liverpool who um is more than capable of coming and replacing
26:37Trippier if he is to go but yeah I think there's a point of view I see why Trippier want to go
26:43from my point of view and I'm probably a lot of Newcastle fans as well you'd want to see him stick
26:47about from there yeah maybe finish finish his career yeah um but there's money to be made and
26:53if there's an opportunity to go make that life-changing money then I don't think anyone
26:56can begrudge him with that yeah if he was to leave to the Saudis I think it was it's a deal
27:01that will benefit him as a person and also Newcastle as a club so it's it's it's a win-win
27:06both in both counts but of course as you say there is also reason to keep them around but
27:11we shall see how that plays out right in terms of incomings it's all a bit quiet at the moment
27:17isn't it now that could be just because leaks are being kept at a minimum people like me and you
27:22just not hearing anything at all or anything uh but yeah it all just as I say it's quiet
27:29Newcastle probably needs a right winger as a priority especially if Miguel Almiron leaves
27:35as well which he may well do a young striker may well be needed obviously we don't know what
27:40Callum Wilson's future will will be because a lot of reports perhaps suggesting he wants to stay at
27:46Newcastle and you also might want to keep him as well but obviously as we've already mentioned he's
27:50injured again and it's it's just a a regular occurrence with Callum Wilson now so if he does
27:57stay you could argue you could still bring a young striker in who could deputize because then
28:01it's then when Callum Wilson is fit he can play when he's fit but even when he's not you still
28:06then got another person behind him to to keep Isaac sort of on his toes obviously Alexander
28:11is the number one choice always will be from now on but if Callum Wilson leaves and you have to
28:17perhaps have scope to bring in a more challenge a striker who would perhaps challenge is actually
28:22the number one spot more so than if Wilson stayed and you bring a young striker in but yeah I think
28:27you need like you need a right winger definitely and you need perhaps a young striker if Wilson
28:31does stay but it's anything else I think perhaps set a half is that probably looking at for Fabian
28:36Shaw's long-term replacement as well I should imagine yeah well do you know I think they need
28:41a goalkeeper they've only got five I'm going to tell you I've got a lot of them haven't they yeah
28:46they've got I mean obviously Nick Pope number one still and you've got Martin de Brathca still under
28:51contract in Newcastle you've got I've got Mark Gillespie, John Ruddy and I really don't know
28:55how to pronounce this other one Odysseys of Lacademos I think I'm going to leave you to
29:01that John I'm going to try that but yeah so yeah five under contract in Newcastle
29:07at the moment it is quite a lot I mean obviously they've already got rid of
29:10Loris Karius but you'd imagine de Brathca will probably leave won't he? Yeah I think de Brathca
29:16will be the man that gives Rhian that goalkeeping department I think when you bring in a new number
29:24two a new number three I think it probably sends out a message to de Brathca I can't imagine he's
29:29too happy with them with a number of goalkeepers they've signed whilst he's been competing at the
29:34Euro so yeah I do expect him to leave but yeah going back to going back to incomings I think
29:40you mentioned about the striker situation there Newcastle regardless of Calum Wilson's future
29:45I desperately need a striker this summer I say regardless of whether Calum Wilson stays or not
29:50because last season let's not forget Alexander Izak had his fair share of injury problems
29:57as well he had that thigh injury that he was managing so it's you know it's not out of the
30:01question that Alexander Izak may need a time on the side sidelines next year and when you look to
30:07that second or backup striker Calum Wilson's currently the man and Calum Wilson as he's proven
30:13which is he's proven that he's not very reliable in terms of he's being available for selection so
30:21it's a real it's a real shame of Calum Wilson because he's an incredible Premier League goal
30:26scorer like there aren't many better if you're looking the two strikers Newcastle have got in
30:30terms of ability I would argue they've probably got one the best one of the best two or best
30:35pair in the Premier League if they both could stay fit you'd be laughing wouldn't you absolutely
30:41yeah so look maybe maybe with the less the least amount of games or the less amount of games next
30:48season maybe Calum Wilson will be available more often but for me it's a risk that just isn't worth
30:53taken so yeah they need to go and sign a striker this summer I think they haven't
30:59replaced Chris Wood from I was just gonna say haven't replaced Chris Wood from 80 months ago
31:05which is silly in many ways given that last season they played more games and didn't have that third
31:12third option so yeah regardless they've got a signer a striker but they don't come cheap so
31:21yeah what what what do you do do you do you try and sell Calum Wilson to help fund the
31:26striker is there room in the budget to go and sign the striker regardless of Calum Wilson's
31:32situation but yeah that's the that's a tough thing about sort of PSR and budgets etc each
31:39summer you've got to weigh up your your priorities what positions are priorities and look for me I
31:44think the striker position right forward and a centre back are three absolutes absolutes this
31:51summer so I'd hope Newcastle got enough in the bank to go and sign a striker probably I think
32:00one thing they should be looking to do is look on the on the continent across Europe more often
32:04because I think that's probably one thing that Eddie Howe as a as a head coach has been criticised
32:09for is they haven't signed too many players across Europe and then of course when you sign players
32:15from England they've got the sort of that premium price if you like so and as I said that goes back
32:20to the Paul Mitchell sort of argument where both people are going find gems across Europe
32:28maybe even the Premier League that can you know that don't cost as much money as
32:35what you'd usually be paying indeed yes obviously as you say striker right forward right winger
32:41and a centre half I think that you're covered in the left wing department you've got Anthony Gordon
32:46you've got Harvey Barnes you're fine there obviously in the right wing you'll need one
32:50Alvaro probably goes and you keep Murphy as you as your backup right back if Trippier goes you've
32:56got Livermanto you've got Kraft as your backup left back I think you're probably okay now you've
33:01got Lewis Hall he's probably your number one choice Dan Burden can play there Lloyd Kelly
33:05could play there as well and then obviously that goes into the left centre half so Burden can he
33:09can also fill in too you've got you've got LaSalle and Botman both to come back towards the end of
33:15this year start of next so probably covered on the left side of the centre half then obviously
33:18it's one to be covered for Fabian Scheer with all his head injuries that he has 10 times a game
33:25and then obviously goalkeeper goalkeeper yeah inundated I think it's fair to say
33:30even the midfield centre midfield obviously Lewis Miley probably will miss the start of the season
33:34but if Joe Willock is back to full fitness which we hope he will be you've got here you've got
33:38Tonali two or three games into the season coming back and obviously you've got Joe Linton you've
33:43got Bruno Longstaff there's a chance he could be sold perhaps maybe to a bit like Elliot
33:49Arneson do you think like because you'll get that pure profit premium on the fact that he's an
33:53academy graduate yeah possibly the Sean Longstaff arguments are difficult actually because
33:59they've got a player there who as you mentioned can earn pure profit from if they were to sell him
34:06his Conrack expires next summer so a pure profit margin month for a minute by minute month by month
34:14this season will gradually get lower so Newcastle have got to wait up now do you offer Sean Longstaff
34:19a new long-term contract or do you look to cash in this summer whilst you can I think
34:26me personally I think you'll I think you'll stay I think as much for as much criticism
34:31he gets off Newcastle fans I think Eddie Howe is a big fan of the player as a typical Eddie
34:38Howe performer in many ways works hard just lacks that little bit of quality but I think
34:45I think Sean Longstaff will probably be in the start 11 for the first game of the season
34:49at this rate because Tonali is still not available and Joe Willock is still working his way back for
34:54a minute Achilles injury so I think I think Longstaff will say stay but I do think they've
35:00got a decision to weigh up over while I offer him a new contract and if I'm not going to offer him a
35:04new contract then it probably does make sense to cash in. Indeed yes I mean to be fair to
35:10Sean Longstaff he's been bowling very well for Tynemouth Cricket Club this summer. Yes I've seen
35:14yeah it was um I've seen that he took a wicket. He took several actually I think I mean
35:22yeah I have a friend who um I think it was up at um they were playing away against
35:29Gosforth and I had a friend who was watching them and got a picture of them afterwards as well
35:32and apparently had another good bowling performance as well took a few so um yeah I was going to say
35:39who was it who played was it was it Ian Botham who played cricket and then football for
35:43Scunthorpe United I think as well so yeah you never know. You might do that this summer you might
35:53you know Newcastle might sign with Tynemouth Cricket Club or something like that maybe I don't know
35:58or Mike might call quits on football and start playing. Yeah I was going to say he might just
36:03he might leave football entirely and suddenly like summer suddenly he's off he's at Lourdes opening
36:08the battling or opening the bowling. You know going from scoring against Paris Saint-Germain to
36:15opening the bowling against the West Indies at Lourdes for example that would be quite the
36:19quite the difference but uh yeah there's certainly a decision to be made on
36:23on Sean Longstaff there but I think that sort of covers the transfer window Newcastle need
36:28as a priority as we've said a striker a right winger and a centre-half to cover for Fabian
36:32Scheer so and then anything else that comes in that can be generated from the budget perhaps
36:37from other sales uh would be very good indeed but it's obviously nothing's going to come cheap but
36:42I think that you need those I think as a priority you need those three to make sure the season's
36:48going to be good of course when Willock and Tadali are fully fit you may feel there's going to be
36:52should be bolstered to be honest you should be fine there um but I think yeah it's it
36:59they need to get a bit of a move on I think they need to start doing making some deals uh getting
37:04them done but we'll we'll move on finally Jordan because you are off very soon to the other side
37:19of the world you've already done Germany uh but soon enough you're off to Tokyo in Japan uh for
37:26Newcastle's second pre-season trip of the of the summer uh firstly are you looking forward to it
37:32yeah I mean I'm looking forward to getting there because uh as people know the flight to Japan
37:38isn't exactly short so I think me travel time's around 17 hours so yeah cover um the friendliest
37:46hole on Saturday then drive down to Manchester stay in Manchester for the night and then yeah
37:53fly to Tokyo on Sunday morning I don't get there till Sunday afternoon sorry Monday afternoon I
37:58think it is um obviously I know there's a time difference but it's a lot of hours traveling so
38:03yeah I'm looking forward to it but just want to get the traveling out the way first and then
38:08once I'm there I'll be happy but yeah it should be should be a good trip Tokyo is a place I've never
38:15been to before I never thought I would go to before so um yeah really looking forward to seeing
38:20the the sights if I get a chance and then of course um the football teams at Newcastle will
38:25be playing as well because I've heard that they're quite impressive so yeah looking forward I mean
38:30from what I hear I mean my dad's been to Japan before and apparently karaoke bars are quite a
38:34big thing over there so right well yeah well if you don't know about me I'm a good singer
38:39well I mean I can't say I've seen you I've seen you dancing though Jordan and I'm not entirely
38:44sure about that um but yeah if you want to go and sing something you know go go and start singing
38:50the Blade and Races in a karaoke bar in Japan I'll be all for it uh but yes as you say there
38:56Newcastle um they've got two fixtures over there against two Japanese sides as we mentioned earlier
39:03again it the results don't even matter it's just a case of building the fitness building the
39:08technical awareness up isn't it yeah it is exactly that yeah um and they'll pop up well
39:13they'll be able to bring the international players back into the mix as well uh Bruno likes your
39:19Bruno's uh Gordon's Trippier maybe um you know Almiron etc so Tokyo will be the the time where
39:29we'll get to see Newcastle at full strength if you like hopefully you know likes your
39:35and Willock's who weren't able to train properly and Germany will be able to get minutes under their
39:42belts against the two Japanese teams out there they're playing so it's a it's a very important
39:49trip not just in terms of that game time as well but the wider picture after you look commercially
39:54for the for the club because this is what these trips are about it's it's about you know commercial
39:59commercial gains and um sort of finding new fan bases really are attracting new
40:06fan bases shall I say so it'll be a busy one I don't think Eddie Howard's you know particularly
40:12gets particularly infused by by these trips but totally understands why it has to
40:16has to be done so it'll be a busy busy week for them and they'll then return from then
40:22have the Sella Weekender and then yeah the Sella Weekender which is uh yeah we'll see how many
40:29tickets are sold for that one because I don't think the opposition are too uh lucrative for
40:33this one they were a bit better last year wasn't it was Villarreal and I forget who else it was
40:38uh it was Florentina and Nice but of course Inglos didn't play in Nice because yeah as I said
40:45they were all teams you have teams that you know they had a bit of weight about them I guess to be
40:50honest um but still yeah I mean and just before we finish Sean so what what is the plan in Japan
40:55of course we've got the two games but what sort of media activities can we expect and
40:59anything else that you can we can look forward to on Newcastle World? Yeah I mean I'll give Newcastle
41:06World a plug yeah just check Newcastle World out for check it out now check it out next week as
41:11well when we are in Japan because there'll be lots of content um as I say we'll we'll be speaking to
41:17Eddie Howe before and after games or then cover the games as well play our ratings etc
41:22um I'm sure there'll be a commercial things that the players do I will be invited along to be able
41:28to speak to them and get video footage from that so as much it'll be a busy trip for the players
41:34and Eddie Howe will be a busy one for us as well because you know we'll be aiming to cover absolutely
41:38everything that Newcastle do so there'll be there'll be lots not just the matches but everything
41:44outside of it as well um you know try and capture the mood over in Japan as well just
41:49you know how big are Newcastle United over in Japan yeah it's um yeah it's a it's a big
41:56opportunity for for the club to go and build a farm base over there you know and hopefully in a week
42:00and hopefully we can capture that. I see you can have a Newcastle World farm club over there maybe
42:05the Tokyo brand. There's already one over there I think I think Newcastle World's gone worldwide so
42:12yeah oh wow fantastic well yeah I'm certainly looking forward to what comes from it as well
42:18um certainly the video content and um what we can see but yeah it should be interesting as you say
42:24then sell a weekend after that and all of a sudden it'll be time to kick off this new season again
42:29we'll be back into the thick of it Southampton at home on the 17th of August at three o'clock
42:34kick-off at St James's Park we'll kick start the new season and oh god here we go again I mean
42:41I think we'll what we'll finish on Jordan before we I know we said that there but
42:46I know there's still a bit of the transfer window left to go and obviously there's still
42:49lots of preparations still to come but what do Newcastle need to do this season
42:54in terms of expectation what should what should they be aiming for?
43:00Yeah it's a good question because I think a lot of people probably have different
43:05answers to this but for me it has to they have to go and finish
43:09inside the I'll say top six but I do think they should I do think they should be pushing top four
43:15again I think they've got to use the no European yeah they've got they've got to use it their
43:23advantage there was real disappointment that they're missing out on the Europa League spot
43:28last season but the only way they can come back from that is they utilise it and you know last
43:34time last time they didn't have European football look at what they wanted to achieve they went in
43:39you know not just not just where they finished but the football they played
43:42in the season where they went and finished fifth was was so entertaining you know that
43:46there's this high intensity just a really good football team to watch so you know hopefully
43:52that'll return this season because I think last season the football was tough to watch
43:59at times because of the lack of bodies and you know they weren't quite able to fulfill what Eddie
44:03how wanted but yeah there's there's no sort of excuses this season for not being able to
44:10to do that so I think without European football they should be pushing to get back there
44:18I think top four should be a name they should certainly be competing for the top four whether
44:23they finish inside the top four is a different different answer but I think they should be in
44:28and around there and then of course as well the cup run as well should be should be a massive
44:36aim and I think you know Eddie how has already told his player that as well because you think
44:42about in the last two seasons they've got a final last season they got a two-quarter final so
44:49they weren't a million miles away now it's about trying to go that little one step further and then
44:55end in the end the way yeah I was gonna say I mean obviously top five could get your champions
45:01league again yeah so you know because it depends on the coefficients and how they were again this
45:06season but um yeah I'd be happy with say sixth in a cup personally but I think either or
45:15and it'll be hard to compete but then again of course you know two seasons ago they came
45:20forth and got to the final of the league cup and we're just you know 90 minutes away from
45:23from winning something there so you could you could even argue fifth in the cup as well sort
45:28of top because that could get champions league in a cup so yeah as much as I want champions league
45:34and all that I think I'm more desperate to see them finally end the way to win something you've
45:40got to they've got to become a winning club eventually haven't they and that's got it's
45:44got to happen at some point um and as I say I'd take a league cup or FA cup so much right now
45:52as as obviously as a fan as well as a journalist as well but I think yeah that sort of sums it up
45:59for Newcastle as going into the new season in terms of what they should be achieving it'll be a
46:06as always a long arduous up and down roller coaster season but I'm sure that they will I'm confident
46:13that they'll better the seventh place they got last season and perhaps go further in the cup so
46:18let's be honest in the cup last season especially the league cup they were a key and trippy mistake
46:23and 60 seconds away from probably and no disrespect to Middlesbrough making the final
46:30because let's be honest Newcastle were just as good as Chelsea last season Chelsea had a good
46:34end to this season but he also beat them forward earlier on in the season as well and Newcastle
46:38were winning that game 1-0 so I know Chelsea finished above in the end but they were probably
46:42just on par with each other and and Chelsea I know they got beat by Middlesbrough in the first
46:46leg but they hammered them in the in the second just like Newcastle beat Sunderland as well
46:50in the FA cup so Newcastle would have let's be honest in all in nine times out of ten would
46:55have beat Middlesbrough in that over two legs in the semi-final and so would have been again in the
46:59league cup final so it would they were that close really again weren't they and and they would have
47:04played Liverpool side who ended up feeling a lot of youngsters and Chelsea couldn't quite get past
47:08that but regardless it is what it is but anyway thank you Jordan once again obviously you're in
47:14Japan next week so it'll probably be a lack of a podcast unless you send some stuff back and I
47:20could try and edit it all together we'll see how it goes but apart from that if not if that doesn't
47:25happen we'll certainly be back the week after after back from Japan to review that trip and
47:30look ahead to the belting seller weekender that we've all got to look forward to and then after
47:35that we'll certainly be into the new season but until then thanks Jordan we'll see you next time
47:39and how are the lads
