00:00:00Germany and Spain have played 25 games over the last 87 years and only one has ended goalless
00:00:07and that was a friendly in 1995 in which Jürgen Klinsmann was playing.
00:00:14That's scoring obviously, nil-nil.
00:00:16Yes, that must have been right at the end of your career, 1995.
00:00:20Almost, yes.
00:00:21Maybe that did for you, that particular... What have you made of Germany so far?
00:00:25I'm very pleased. I have to say I'm pleased. I'm pleased they worked themselves into the game.
00:00:30Obviously in the beginning a little bit nervous but then more and more they tried to press them high.
00:00:35It didn't work out all the time but they didn't allow them many chances and then they created a bit their own ones.
00:00:40It smelled a little bit like something happened maybe from a set play,
00:00:43from a side-leaf-free kick or from a corner kick or something like that.
00:00:48You've turned it to England.
00:00:50No, I'm pleased. I'm pleased because I have to admit I'm a bit nervous obviously
00:00:56because of that defeat against Japan but so far I'm really pleased.
00:01:00They're good now in the game. I think they grew throughout the first 45 minutes in confidence.
00:01:05They got calmer. The passing was good, precise.
00:01:08Yes, I think I'm looking forward to another...
00:01:11A lot of talk before the tournament started, Maurizio, about the fact that Spain played beautiful football,
00:01:17kept the ball but have they got that goal threat?
00:01:20Everyone in the first game, yes, they have seven goals but against tougher opposition
00:01:25it's not looked quite so easy for them to create chances.
00:01:27I think it was a great game for Spain against Costa Rica but it's true that now in front is Germany.
00:01:34It's a tough team and it's not easy to create the chances they created against Costa Rica
00:01:39but I think Spain is controlling the game.
00:01:44I agree with Jürgen that he felt pleased about the performance of Germany
00:01:51but we'll see with the second half because in the end the possession is for Spain
00:01:58and therefore to chase Germany too much, the Spanish player, we'll see what happens in the second half if you don't pay the effort.
00:02:0768% possession for Spain. You expect those sort of numbers these days.
00:02:12It's the way they play and they do keep the ball very comfortably.
00:02:16But it also shows you in these tournaments they're not easy to play.
00:02:19You have a good performance, everyone gets excited and then you can't play.
00:02:24Pretty much everyone in this tournament, the only team that's won twice I think is France.
00:02:30So it just shows you're difficult and if you can get through these games
00:02:34and still be in a decent shape in the competition there's not too much to worry about.
00:02:38No, and I think there's different ways of skinning a cat as well.
00:02:41You can't always play the beautiful game. Everyone would ideally love to play the beautiful game
00:02:46but sometimes you have to have a bit of grit and determination, find another way to win.
00:02:50Today's a little bit more of a tougher opposition in Germany.
00:02:53That's expected. The first game, that's a perfect scenario for Spain
00:02:57but the way that they're playing this game even, they're going to control the tempo of the game.
00:03:02But they had the best chance in the first half even though West Ham didn't create as many chances
00:03:05but they had the best chance.
00:03:07And he also had an unbelievable save from Neuer.
00:03:11Actually it's probably one of those, if he hadn't have saved it, people would have said
00:03:13well he should have saved it but he did knock it on the ball because he really hit it hard.
00:03:19Yes, it's a very well played from Spain and a massive save for me.
00:03:25One of the best keepers in the world showing in this action and you need this type of player
00:03:30if you want to have the chance to win this trophy but I've seen an amazing save.
00:03:37Saw it late, didn't he? Looked through the legs.
00:03:40Beautiful strike.
00:03:44Spain's press, it worked well early on, didn't it?
00:03:46Yeah.
00:03:47Late in the game you felt Germany got into it a bit more.
00:03:49Yeah, I think we all talk about Spain and rightly so for how beautiful they play football
00:03:54and how fluid they are but I think the press is what's impressed me today more than anything.
00:03:57The way that they've gone straight up against the goalkeeper, really hard to pitch immediately,
00:04:01not allowing Germany easy game out, easy play out.
00:04:04That there, the bomb, Karl Hauser right back, look how high he is for that press
00:04:09and they're forcing Germany to play a different way.
00:04:11Germany like to get possession and rhythm in their game,
00:04:13they're not allowing the rhythm to start and here you see
00:04:16loads of Spain bodies in the middle of the park especially
00:04:19but again once the ball turns over immediately players around the ball
00:04:23making sure that the German players can't get their heads up to play easy football at all.
00:04:28I found this bit really interesting to be fair because I expected good passing and rhythm
00:04:32but this is the element, if you're going to win a tournament like this,
00:04:35you have to have this side of the game.
00:04:37Yes, for Spain it's so important to recover as soon as possible the ball.
00:04:41The difference in between Spain and Germany I think is clear, how they jump.
00:04:46We saw Carvajal how he jumped to the defensive line of Germany
00:04:51and it's 1v1, nearly 1v1 in open play.
00:04:55Only Germany go to do sometimes 1v1 when it's goal kick, when the ball is stopped
00:05:01and after another play they give the possibility to progress on the pitch
00:05:07and Spain dominate the possession and control the space
00:05:11because it's going down, down, down, down.
00:05:14But I think the game is open and we'll see what happens in the second half.
00:05:18Germany crept into the game a little bit, didn't they?
00:05:21Gnabry had a chance.
00:05:23Yes, Gnabry had a chance and they worked themselves into the game
00:05:26but you see that we're missing one element,
00:05:28this is a strong centre forward which is very unusual for Germany.
00:05:31We're going to give Harry Kane a German passport.
00:05:34But this is really, we don't have a reference point,
00:05:35we don't have a guy up front to play off basically.
00:05:39So it has to come through the attacking midfielders like Musiala or Gündogan.
00:05:43In this case now you have Gnabry there.
00:05:46They are there then to create something but there are no natural goal scorers.
00:05:49So we're lacking that at the moment.
00:05:51They need a Jürgen Klinsmann.
00:05:54I don't know, I think he's still laid down on the edge of the six-yard box
00:05:57and trying to get one or two goals in the tournament.
00:05:59But this chance here is a perfect example of what Mauricio is saying there.
00:06:04When there's a start from a goal kick,
00:06:07that's when Germany are brave and they go up the pitch and they win it
00:06:10and they've got a couple of opportunities like that.
00:06:12More because they're going to try to play.
00:06:18Germany's biggest threat, I suppose it points out the fact
00:06:20that they lack a natural number nine,
00:06:23is the biggest threat has been Rudiger.
00:06:25Yep, that's why I'm hoping for a set piece.
00:06:28I'm hoping for maybe a corner kick or a side free kick like this was.
00:06:34Unfortunately ruled off because of upside.
00:06:37We have beautiful technology to prove that.
00:06:39But those type of games when it's scratchy,
00:06:42when it's kind of a fight back and forth
00:06:44and obviously Spain with its high pressure running game,
00:06:47Germany doesn't want to play long balls
00:06:48because they have nobody up front there to hold the ball.
00:06:51Then you rely on set pieces
00:06:53and this could be maybe a way to score against Spain.
00:06:57They've actually got a set piece coach as well in the camp
00:06:59and obviously they're doing it in the first game.
00:07:01Rudiger had an opportunity from a set piece
00:07:03so you can see they're working on these things.
00:07:04That's the only area that I would say that is,
00:07:06would look at in the Spain squad as a weakness maybe.
00:07:09It's interesting that you talk about a set piece coach
00:07:11because it's becoming a thing now in the game.
00:07:13Is it something you've ever had, Mauricio?
00:07:16Yes, every coaching staff now is really focusing
00:07:22on the set pieces.
00:07:23I think it's so important.
00:07:25We can see how many goals came from set pieces.
00:07:29Do you think it's possibly more important in a tournament
00:07:31to have a set piece coach in a World Cup
00:07:35rather than perhaps in a league thing
00:07:36because it can make just that difference
00:07:38in a short-term tournament?
00:07:40Yes, I agree.
00:07:40I think it's going to be key.
00:07:42For me it's key, of course.
00:07:43It's key in the leagues also
00:07:46but I think in the short tournament
00:07:48I think every single detail is so important
00:07:51and set pieces is a really important part of the game.
00:07:54You've seen the approach to Germany in this game.
00:07:57They've been obviously a little bit cautious.
00:07:59They can afford to be a bit more cautious
00:08:01than they would have done.
00:08:01Do you think he tweaked his team this afternoon
00:08:04after he saw the result of Costa Rica?
00:08:07No, I don't think so.
00:08:08I think they were well prepared now for Spain.
00:08:12They have the experience coming out of the club
00:08:14when Bayern Munich plays Real Madrid, plays Barcelona.
00:08:17So they're comfortable with playing Spain.
00:08:18Maybe they were more comfortable with playing Spain
00:08:20than actually Japan.
00:08:23Yeah, so I think they were well prepared.
00:08:25They just need to be patient and wait for their chance.
00:08:27They will never beat Spain in possession
00:08:30or anything like that.
00:08:31But I think there's a chance to get three points.
00:08:34We'll see.
00:08:35Lots more to look out for on iPlayer.
00:08:51That's very poetic.
00:08:53All new to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
00:09:01The BBC Sport documentary How to Win the World Cup
00:09:04is available now on iPlayer.

00:09:09on the World Cup Daily Podcast.
00:09:10Listen on BBC Sounds.
00:09:12And don't forget it's Wales versus England on Tuesday.
00:09:14Both teams can still qualify.
00:09:16We're on BBC One at six o'clock.
00:09:19While you are carrying out this test of teamwork,
00:09:22I'll be shooting at you with live ammunition.
00:09:24Gentlemen, this is a theatre of war, not a playground.
00:09:27When we've had our cocktails and the sun is set,
00:09:29I think we should go for a bit of jolly.
00:09:31What's a jolly?
00:09:35Sir, permission to steal food ration?
00:09:37Maybe some guns and ammunition?
00:09:39Found explosives and machine guns.
00:09:40Permission granted.
00:09:43I have had an idea.
00:09:44SAS Rogue Heroes.
00:09:46Watch all episodes on BBC iPlayer.
00:09:52Two days on from that last gasp defeat against Iran,
00:09:55how have Wales regrouped?
00:09:57Catherine Helleth can give us the latest
00:09:59on the preparations for England.
00:10:05Wales are going to have to do something very,
00:10:07very special against England to stay in this World Cup.
00:10:12That was a tough watch.
00:10:13When you have so many players that have a bad day,
00:10:15there's only going to be one outcome.
00:10:17It's a lot of derby now, isn't it, for us?
00:10:18And we want to finish on a high.
00:10:22Wales have had to do some soul-searching
00:10:24after that disappointing performance
00:10:26and difficult result against Iran.
00:10:28But mathematically, they are still in this group with a point.
00:10:32And they now have a point to prove
00:10:35against their closest of neighbours and rivals.
00:10:38It's not a position we wanted to be in after the two games
00:10:41in terms of performances and the return of points.
00:10:44But we're still alive.
00:10:46And I'd say we're ready to give absolutely everything
00:10:52to get a win in our third game.
00:10:53A big disappointment, but we had 24 hours where we saw,
00:10:58we took our medicine and we're ready to go again.
00:11:01They're a good team.
00:11:03They've shown that in the last few years.
00:11:05But we have to hope we can do something special against them.
00:11:09No, with there's still hope.
00:11:10Of course, we've got to absolutely fight 100% for that.
00:11:15And as I said, that's exactly what we're going to do.
00:11:19We're going to do everything we can
00:11:21to give ourselves the best chance.
00:11:22It's as simple as that.
00:11:23Despite saying it's as simple as that,
00:11:25we're up against tough opposition.
00:11:26We know that.
00:11:27And it's going to require us to be absolutely
00:11:30on the top of our game and back to the levels
00:11:32that we've been at in the past.
00:11:35One other line from the camp today.
00:11:38Wales held a minute's silence in memory of Gary Speed
00:11:42on the 11th anniversary of his passing.
00:11:45He's still very much missed.
00:11:54Wales can still qualify, but they need to beat England
00:11:57and hope Iran draw with USA.
00:11:59England will go through, provided they avoid a draw.
00:12:02A win would guarantee Gareth Southgate's team
00:12:04top spot in the group.
00:12:06Kelly Summers has the latest from the camp.
00:12:12Yeah, I've been at England's Al Wakra training base today, Gary.
00:12:14In fact, the three Lions are staying just a short walk away
00:12:17from us along the bay.
00:12:19I spoke to Gareth Southgate, Harry Kane, and Calvin Phillips,
00:12:22and it's clear the players and management
00:12:24are all still very calm.
00:12:25After all, they are still sitting at the top of the table.
00:12:28And it's clear the players and management
00:12:30After all, they are still sitting at the top of Group B
00:12:34with a game to spare.
00:12:35But Kane did admit following the fact that England
00:12:37failed to secure qualification on Friday,
00:12:39he's not too surprised at the noise that's followed.
00:12:43I think the team are pretty used to it.
00:12:45You know, we go from a 6-2 win, and everyone's talking about
00:12:50us winning the tournament.
00:12:51And then we have a not a bad result, a 0-0 against USA.
00:12:56And people, of course, have their opinions.
00:12:59But that's part and parcel, I think,
00:13:00of major tournament football.
00:13:02When we look back at the Euros, for example,
00:13:04it's very similar.
00:13:05After we drew to Scotland, there was a lot of noise
00:13:07after that game.
00:13:08But we're focused on ourselves.
00:13:09We know what it takes to get to a major championship final.
00:13:13And yeah, it's going to be hopefully more of the same
00:13:15if we stay focused on what we need to do.
00:13:20Kane himself is still searching for his first goal
00:13:22of the tournament.
00:13:23And given the fact he had a scan on his foot last week,
00:13:25I also asked him about that injury.
00:13:27He said he's fine.
00:13:28He said he's played on in the past with far worse.
00:13:31I also asked Gareth Southgate about the man
00:13:34that everyone is talking about.
00:13:35And he's assured us Phil Foden still has a major part
00:13:39to play in this tournament.
00:13:40Whether that comes on Tuesday against Wales,
00:13:42we'll have to wait and see.
00:13:43Kick off in that one, less than 48 hours.
00:13:49Thanks, Kelly.
00:13:50Thoughts on the second half, Rio?
00:13:52Generally in this tournament, they have opened up
00:13:55very much in the second half.
00:13:56Yeah, I'd like to see that.
00:13:57I think we'll continue to see Spain dominate in possession.
00:13:59But I think it's in the transitions
00:14:01and when they're pressing, it's going to be the key moments
00:14:03that are produced on both sides.
00:14:05OK, right.
00:14:05They look like they're about to kick off.
00:14:07So let's join the bloke alongside Steve Bowery.
00:14:09Probably wants to mention Alan Shearer.
00:14:15Thanks, Kerry.
00:14:17No changes from either side.
00:14:20And either coach at halftime.
00:14:23Will we see a change in this scoreline?
00:14:28As it stands, Spain would be top of Group E with four points.
00:14:37Japan and Costa Rica on three and Germany on one.
00:14:39But it could all change in the next 45 minutes.
00:14:43Germany went a little early there
00:14:45for the Dutch referees' liking.
00:14:53Germany get us underway in the second half.
00:14:58Straight away, by Moussiata.
00:15:08Brown.
00:15:13Covered by Simon.
00:15:15Well, you would hope it would open up
00:15:17because a draw is much better for Spain than it is for Germany,
00:15:22isn't it?
00:15:24Because...
00:15:27Germany would be looking for a favour from Spain
00:15:29in the last game if it stays like this.
00:15:32As it stands, Germany would have to beat Costa Rica
00:15:36and Japan would have to lose to Spain.
00:15:42If Japan were to draw,
00:15:44then we're into goal difference territory.
00:15:47Let's leave it at that for now.
00:15:48Yes.
00:15:53A lot of football still to be played here.
00:15:55Kehrer.
00:16:08It's a high press again from Germany.
00:16:14Asensio.
00:16:18Being chased by Kehrer.
00:16:20Torres at the back post.
00:16:21Is it going to be close enough to him?
00:16:23No.
00:16:24I thought Torres could have got across the near post there, you know.
00:16:29Asensio's looking up and that's what he wants him to do.
00:16:33There's Müller at the other end.
00:16:34The flag is up.
00:16:37He hasn't seen it.
00:16:38The referee has now.
00:16:49That's good defending again, isn't it?
00:16:51Good line.
00:16:52And he is offside again.
00:17:01This experience crucial.
00:17:02Only four more players
00:17:05who played more often for Germany.
00:17:06And Thomas Müller.
00:17:08Just one behind.
00:17:09Ashton Schweinsteiger with his 120th cap today.
00:17:22Goretzka is down.
00:17:31And that is part of the problem
00:17:33in this Germany team.
00:17:35Is that
00:17:37top class centre forward.
00:17:38A Klinsmann or a closer.
00:17:41Someone who's going to be a threat in and around that six yard box.
00:17:44They had that problem in the last game, didn't they?
00:17:48Although he's not in that kind of company.
00:17:50Timo Werner's injury was a blow.
00:17:52Because generally he's performed better for country than club.
00:17:56What he gave them, Steve, is he actually gave them a threat in behind.
00:17:59Which then opened up spaces for other players.
00:18:02With his pace.
00:18:08And he's got it.
00:18:09He's got it.
00:18:10He's got it.
00:18:10He's got it.
00:18:11He's got it.
00:18:11He's got it.
00:18:12He's got it.
00:18:12He's got it.
00:18:13He's got it.
00:18:13He's got it.
00:18:17Carragher.
00:18:20Padre.
00:18:23Challenge by Jordi Alba.
00:18:31Luis Enrique played for Spain against Germany in a World Cup back in 94.
00:18:37Had three different World Cup finals.
00:18:39Actually the Spain coach.
00:18:40Very talented sport here, isn't it?
00:18:54And he's brought the second youngest squad Spain have ever done to a World Cup.
00:19:02Just look at them in that centre forward position.
00:19:05And also at centre half with Rodry back there.
00:19:08We've seen already in the first half that Germany can cause problems from set pieces.
00:19:14And another one's coming up here.
00:19:16Let's see what they've got at the sleeve.
00:19:20Busquets on Gundogan.
00:19:22Rudi got right at the heart of things on the edge of the penalty area again.
00:19:52Nothing this time.
00:20:07Held the line well.
00:20:08Spain though, didn't they?
00:20:11They were reluctant to run back in there.
00:20:13And you can see what is there.
00:20:15Six of them offside there.
00:20:17It's a brave line.
00:20:19Just need someone to time that run to come from deep.
00:20:24Which is what Rudi could have done in the first half.
00:20:38Rodry.
00:20:41That's gone Germany's way.
00:20:49Germany, incidentally, have never lost three consecutive World Cup games.
00:20:56Not that record this evening.
00:21:01Pedry.
00:21:18Neatly done from Spain.
00:21:28Pedry just showed too much of it.
00:21:30It's a carer.
00:21:32They're doing well again.
00:21:34They're shutting off most avenues and there's not really a way through at this moment in time.
00:21:38I get the feeling it's going to take a piece of brilliance from someone to open this up.
00:21:44Well, there's players out there with just that.
00:21:57Van der Wey.
00:21:58And Pedry.
00:21:59With the run from the right.
00:22:14Torres.
00:22:21Holman.
00:22:24Taking on Carragher.
00:22:29He's got up to the task.
00:22:31Yeah, it's good defending.
00:22:32He was patient.
00:22:34Didn't dive in.
00:22:36And he's got the ball.
00:22:38He's got the ball.
00:22:39He's got the ball.
00:22:40He's got the ball.
00:22:41He's got the ball.
00:22:42He's got the ball.
00:22:43And tour to tour with him.
00:22:46Well, Luis Enrique has waited only eight minutes to change it up for Spain.
00:22:50Alvaro Morata is going to come on.
00:22:52He's getting his final instructions down there.
00:22:54He came off the bench, of course, to score against Costa Rica in the opening game.
00:22:59It's Ferran Torres.
00:23:02Who is going to depart.
00:23:08So the 30-year-old Morata.
00:23:13Five goals in his last eight games for Spain.
00:23:15Including his first at a World Cup.
00:23:17Against Costa Rica.
00:23:19Comes on.
00:23:23His daughter won't be happy.
00:23:28For those who want it without Mishira, showbiz news.
00:23:30Luis Enrique's daughter dating Ferran Torres.
00:23:35You've changed.
00:23:38She should be writing a text out now.
00:23:43So how can Morata change things?
00:23:45He's got to give them more of a threat.
00:23:47He's got to give them more of a presence up front.
00:23:50Running behind.
00:23:52Like that.
00:23:53Here's his first involvement.
00:23:54Sula with him.
00:23:56So not being able to stretch that Germany defense as yet.
00:24:03But once in the first half.
00:24:04Other than that, it's not really worked, has it?
00:24:07Tournament for him.
00:24:08He's 13 now, Morata.
00:24:09He was left out of the entire squad in 2018.
00:24:16He'll go down the middle.
00:24:17And then.
00:24:19Sensi will move up to the right-hand side of the three.
00:24:27He's actually sixth in Spain's all-time goal-scoring record.
00:24:31So he's got a chance.
00:24:32He's actually sixth in Spain's all-time goal-scoring list.
00:24:35But he's still a player that hasn't convinced many.
00:24:39He certainly did.
00:24:40He played in five different World Cup finals.
00:24:43He wasn't bad, was he?
00:24:54Down the wing for Germany.
00:24:59Simo.
00:25:01Quickly out to meet Muller.
00:25:05That's good goalkeeping.
00:25:06Staying alert when he's not had a lot to do.
00:25:09Just helping his defense out.
00:25:11And that ball's played over the top.
00:25:31Whiskey from Simon.
00:25:34Gundewijn.
00:25:36Kimmich.
00:25:39Simon at least did a tone for his own error in the Spain goal.
00:25:44Well, he had to, because it was a terrible pass.
00:25:48Putting them under pressure again and not giving them time to settle on the ball.
00:25:51Good pressing.
00:25:53And he's got a chance.
00:25:54He's got a chance.
00:25:55He's got a chance.
00:25:56He's got a chance.
00:25:57He's got a chance.
00:25:58He's got time to settle on the ball.
00:25:59Good pressing.
00:26:01Gundewijn into Kimmich.
00:26:02He's got to hit it first time to see if he'd expect.
00:26:09But this is where they can cause them problems.
00:26:11Mossetti's free kicker at corner.
00:26:1456 minutes in.
00:26:15Germany have their first corner of the game.
00:26:28Kimmich with it.
00:26:30Away by Morata.
00:26:32Not the balls like that one anyway.
00:26:36Kimmich once more.
00:26:43Now Asensio.
00:26:50He thought he was fouled by Goretzka.
00:26:52And eventually.
00:26:54The Dutch referee agrees.
00:26:55The Dutch referee agrees and shows the Germany midfielder the yellow card.
00:27:01Yeah, I think he had to bring him down there because he knew he was in trouble.
00:27:04He was going to get past him.
00:27:06He can't let him past him at all.
00:27:07Goretzka.
00:27:09Runs the risk there.
00:27:10So he had to foul him.
00:27:18Third yellow card of the evening.
00:27:25Kimmich has it.
00:27:38They did that two or three times early in the game span didn't they?
00:27:41In the first half where they had the switch when they.
00:27:45Decided to make that pass a long one to switch it they haven't really done that.
00:27:48He's a long way out.
00:27:49I haven't really done that.
00:27:51He's a long way out.
00:27:57Very comfortable for Neuer.
00:28:05It's an effort on target anyway.
00:28:19And there lies the problem for Germany.
00:28:35You've got three guys in the box there, not one of them is attacking it, all standing
00:28:40still, static.
00:28:41You've got to have movement, you've got to have someone attacking the ball.
00:28:47It's a subject, as you can hear, that continually frustrates Alan Shearer.
00:28:54I suspect it frustrates the manager also.
00:29:18It's just lead, isn't it?
00:29:31His fourth tournament with Germany.
00:29:33Morata for Spain.
00:29:34Cut out by Rao.
00:29:40Luciano on the turn.
00:29:41Another free kick for them.
00:29:50He's done well tonight.
00:29:51Not had a lot of options on, but when he's had the ball, he's done this well.
00:29:59He's bought his team time, won his team a free kick.
00:30:05Nothing else really he can do.
00:30:07No one in and around him to support him.
00:30:12So that's his only option.
00:30:26Cavalry forward again.
00:30:27Clipped in by Kimmich.
00:30:29Too strong for Rudiger.
00:30:33They did try and stall their run a little bit this time, but it was the pass that was
00:30:40in.
00:30:41Again.
00:30:49Gaffey.
00:30:53Asensio.
00:30:54Morata's gone again.
00:30:57Asensio putting out Olmo instead.
00:31:00He's got four with him in support, Olmo.
00:31:11Germany back in their defensive shape.
00:31:15Gnabry did well.
00:31:16Helping his full-back out, Keira, there.
00:31:20As you have to do.
00:31:23Jordi Alba.
00:31:24There's the touch from Morata.
00:31:29Deadlock broken.
00:31:31And for the second game running, he's off the Spain bench with a goal.
00:31:37With a goal.
00:31:39And that's what happens when you have a centre-forward in there.
00:31:42You saw the ball go in the box two minutes earlier for Germany.
00:31:45No one attacking it.
00:31:46This time at the other end, the ball comes in from that left-hand side.
00:31:52And his movement's fantastic.
00:31:53Get across that near post.
00:31:56All he's requiring is the ball in.
00:31:59Get on the end of it, as he did.
00:32:02They move it really well.
00:32:05Put it in Alba.
00:32:07And he attacks it.
00:32:09And he just has that little flick with the outside of his foot, doesn't he?
00:32:15Good finish.
00:32:16Clever finish.
00:32:17Too quick for the defender.
00:32:25Now the game might open up.
00:32:28Now the game might open up.
00:32:33His 29th goal for Spain.
00:32:37That's what it means to his manager.
00:32:41And their supporters.
00:32:42His second at this World Cup.
00:32:44His first World Cup.
00:32:51Spain lead.
00:32:54That was over-hit by Olmo.
00:32:58When you make a substitution as a manager,
00:33:01you want them to have an impact in the game.
00:33:04And what an impact he's had.
00:33:06He's been on the pitch, Alan, eight minutes.
00:33:09Alvaro Morata.
00:33:11Here comes Spain.
00:33:12That's over Moura.
00:33:13Well defended by Jordi Alba.
00:33:15Goretzka.
00:33:16Blocked by Roderick.
00:33:20Alba can have it.
00:33:23Now we might have a game on our hands.
00:33:25Now it might open up.
00:33:27We'll see.
00:33:35Really clever run and a clever finish.
00:33:37Just the little flick that he had.
00:33:41Yeah, he's happy.
00:33:42So he should be.
00:33:49Six in his last nine for his nation.
00:33:52Alan, put your centre-forwards head on.
00:33:54He would have been bitterly disappointed
00:33:56not to start the opening two games of this tournament.
00:33:59And also when he's seen the team score seven goals
00:34:03and seen the forwards also score goals
00:34:05because whether you like it or not, forwards are selfish.
00:34:08You want to be out there when the goals are going.
00:34:11Here's Olmo.
00:34:12Pedri's going on ahead of him.
00:34:14He's gone square instead.
00:34:15Gavi's left it.
00:34:16Asensio.
00:34:17Great vision from Gavi.
00:34:18He knows who's behind him.
00:34:21He knows if he just lets it run.
00:34:25And this is what's going to happen now.
00:34:26The game's going to open up.
00:34:28And what is it?
00:34:2918, 19 yards out.
00:34:30Leading back.
00:34:31Technique all wrong.
00:34:39Well, he too.
00:34:40Like Maradona.
00:34:41He's got the ball.
00:34:42He's got the ball.
00:34:43He's got the ball.
00:34:44He's got the ball.
00:34:45Well, he too.
00:34:46Like Morata.
00:34:47Could have scored in two successive games.
00:34:50Marco Asensio.
00:34:54Two more changes.
00:34:55Some Luis Enrique.
00:34:56Koke.
00:34:57And Nico Williams.
00:35:04Both of whom came off the bench
00:35:06in the 7-0 win
00:35:08against Costa Rica.
00:35:09That is Asensio's last touch.
00:35:13As the Real Madrid man departs.
00:35:18And so too is Gavi.
00:35:19He played the whole game against Costa Rica.
00:35:22Yeah, I don't think that's a surprise.
00:35:26That's a big ask.
00:35:29To play that amount of football
00:35:31at that age.
00:35:35Well, you know, as a manager
00:35:37it wasn't working
00:35:39in the second half.
00:35:40And after five or six minutes
00:35:41he thought, no, I'm changing it.
00:35:42This is not working.
00:35:43I've got to do something different.
00:35:46Luciala for Germany.
00:35:49Koke.
00:35:54And there's a reason why
00:35:55before the game
00:35:56he said he's the best coach in the world.
00:36:03That might just back it up.
00:36:07Over to Hansi Flick.
00:36:12Germany are going to make a change as well.
00:36:14A double one down there.
00:36:17Meanwhile, Morata chasing this.
00:36:18Sula's header.
00:36:20Koke.
00:36:22Trying to feed Morata.
00:36:24Sula able to nudge that back.
00:36:33Koke's experience.
00:36:35The 70th cap.
00:36:42His third World Cup.
00:36:45And a break for Germany.
00:36:47A big waypoint
00:36:49in this second half.
00:37:09Morata.
00:37:12Koke.
00:37:25Laporte.
00:37:33As hard as they've worked
00:37:35Germany
00:37:37can't say anything other than that.
00:37:38They have lacked that threat, haven't they?
00:37:40They've not had a
00:37:43threat at all, really, up front.
00:37:47Yes, they've worked hard
00:37:48and worked as a team
00:37:49and closed down
00:37:50and gave the fouls away
00:37:51and tried to upset the game.
00:37:54But it's clear what they're lacking.
00:38:00As you can see
00:38:04changes are afoot for Germany.
00:38:07Niklas Fulkrug is an interesting one
00:38:09on Werder Bremen.
00:38:1129.
00:38:12He's going to win just his third cap.
00:38:16Lukas Klosterman
00:38:17is also
00:38:19going to come on.
00:38:21And Leroy Sane
00:38:23who was injured for the first game
00:38:24wasn't fit enough to start tonight.
00:38:25Meanwhile, Pedry
00:38:27trying to feed Morata.
00:38:28Neuer's going to be quick and worse.
00:38:31That's what he's offered them.
00:38:33Morata, he's offered them that
00:38:35run in behind, hasn't he?
00:38:36That threat in behind.
00:38:40OK.
00:38:46So here comes the
00:38:48triple change.
00:38:53Fulkrug,
00:38:55Klosterman
00:38:56and Sane.
00:38:58A little over 20 minutes to go.
00:39:00Lander on the first to depart.
00:39:05Mournatou.
00:39:10And Kehrer
00:39:12who of course
00:39:13was on that yellow card.
00:39:24So Klosterman
00:39:25and Leipzig
00:39:26goes into the right-back position.
00:39:31Fulkrug's an interesting one.
00:39:32Probably wouldn't be in the squad
00:39:34if it wasn't for Werner's injury.
00:39:35Nemanja also
00:39:37outmissing.
00:39:39Spent half his career in the German
00:39:40second division.
00:39:43And he is
00:39:44into double figures in the Bundesliga
00:39:46this season with Werder Bremen.
00:39:48Well, they've got to give him something.
00:39:50They've got to get that ball into the box.
00:39:52He's got to offer them
00:39:54that threat because they just haven't had that.
00:39:57Haven't really looked like scoring
00:39:59other than set pieces.
00:40:06Sule.
00:40:08Here is
00:40:09the aforementioned Fulkrug.
00:40:12Sane.
00:40:14I'm sure he is
00:40:15and he will know.
00:40:19All the way through for him on that occasion.
00:40:25Well,
00:40:26he's got to be
00:40:27in the right-back position.
00:40:29He's got to be
00:40:30in the right-back position.
00:40:32He's got to be
00:40:33in the right-back position.
00:40:35His first World Cup involvement
00:40:36incidentally left out in 2018.
00:40:39David Raum.
00:40:42Nabri.
00:40:46Morata
00:40:47to Williams.
00:40:56He's got to take on Rüdiger
00:40:58and lift it into Koke.
00:41:05Just for Alan's mathematics incidentally,
00:41:07as it stands now,
00:41:09Germany would need to beat Costa Rica
00:41:12and
00:41:13hope Japan
00:41:15lose to Spain and
00:41:17have a better goal difference.
00:41:19Thank you.
00:41:20They're on the race.
00:41:35Sule.
00:41:38Lovely feet from Musiala.
00:41:43He's still going.
00:41:44Can he get the cross in?
00:41:45He can.
00:41:48He threw himself at it.
00:41:49Fulkrug.
00:41:51It's a good ball.
00:41:52He does really well.
00:41:53He's been their best player.
00:41:56Musiala.
00:41:58He's got to be
00:41:59in the right-back position.
00:42:01He's got to be
00:42:02in the right-back position.
00:42:04Similar, wasn't it,
00:42:05to the Spanish goal
00:42:06where you're whipping that ball
00:42:07across to that near post.
00:42:10And you're just hoping for that run
00:42:11and that connection.
00:42:15Rodri sticks those long legs out.
00:42:25Last time these two nations met
00:42:26at a World Cup.
00:42:28Spain won 1-0.
00:42:29That was the semi-final in 2010 in Durban.
00:42:31It's 1-0 at the moment,
00:42:32but Germany an opportunity
00:42:33to change it now.
00:42:34Musiala.
00:42:37Simon
00:42:38stood strong.
00:42:41Gnabry.
00:42:43Germany corner.
00:42:44What a save.
00:42:45That was his big chance, wasn't it?
00:42:46It was a good run in behind.
00:42:48The way to pass was superb.
00:42:52Didn't have any other option
00:42:53but to go for goal.
00:42:54And that's exactly what he did.
00:42:56Went for power.
00:42:57He's not offside.
00:42:59Times it really well.
00:43:00I think he has to go for the shot,
00:43:01doesn't he?
00:43:04Here comes the Germany corner
00:43:05towards Rudiger.
00:43:07Jumping ahead of him.
00:43:08It was full crew.
00:43:09He couldn't get over it.
00:43:15It's a bit better from Germany,
00:43:16isn't it?
00:43:21It's a good save.
00:43:22Stands up really well.
00:43:24He's hoping there that he goes down early,
00:43:26but he didn't.
00:43:27It was a good strike.
00:43:32Busquets.
00:43:36Spain yet to concede in the World Cup.
00:43:38Germany still yet to score
00:43:39from open play.
00:43:54Just that occasion there,
00:43:55when that ball's passed out.
00:43:57That's going to happen
00:43:58because Germany are going to have to push forward.
00:44:01And Spain will leave a man or two up there
00:44:03on the hope that they'll hit them on the brick.
00:44:24Carvajal.
00:44:28Koke.
00:44:29Morata's on the move again.
00:44:30Did he stay onside?
00:44:33No flag yet.
00:44:35Williams.
00:44:39Now the flag's gone up.
00:44:41That's so annoying, isn't it?
00:44:43So annoying that the assistants have to do that
00:44:45and have been taught to do that.
00:44:53You can see.
00:44:55He's looking at him.
00:44:56He knows he's offside.
00:44:57Why wait?
00:44:58He's got the ball.
00:45:06But it's that threat again, isn't it?
00:45:07Of the running in behind.
00:45:09Which they didn't have.
00:45:13Morata has definitely
00:45:15affected the game.
00:45:16That is for sure.
00:45:18He knows he's livened things up.
00:45:20This all-important strike.
00:45:22The difference
00:45:23as we head into the last quarter of an hour.
00:45:32The last time Germany failed to win either of their
00:45:35first two World Cup games
00:45:37was back in 1938.
00:45:45You can see Luis Enrique on the sideline there.
00:45:47Trying to urge his players forward.
00:45:49He wants another one.
00:46:06Forward from Rao.
00:46:11Kimmich.
00:46:18I don't know who that one was to.
00:46:21It wasn't worth the wait from Rudigo, was it?
00:46:26Goratzka to Rao.
00:46:33He's got the ball.
00:46:35He's got the ball.
00:46:37He's got the ball.
00:46:39He's got the ball.
00:46:41He's got the ball.
00:46:43He's got the ball.
00:46:45He's got the ball.
00:46:48Williams tracking back.
00:46:54Play on.
00:46:55He does and eventually the whistle goes.
00:47:03It's not only frustrating for the players.
00:47:06It's frustrating for spectators.
00:47:17Klosterman.
00:47:48Koke.
00:47:53Luciano with the interception.
00:48:03It's a fine Saturday.
00:48:05Both running away from him.
00:48:07He wanted them to come and help him.
00:48:09Come towards him.
00:48:17As it stands he's staring just a third defeat as chairman coach in the face.
00:48:20A problem for him.
00:48:22The two of them have come here in this World Cup.
00:48:25If it stays this way.
00:48:32They would be the only nation.
00:48:34As it stands after two games.
00:48:36In Group E without.
00:48:37A point on the board but.
00:48:39Here is Sule.
00:48:41Sane.
00:48:43Luciano.
00:48:44Appeals for handball.
00:48:45Sane went on.
00:48:48Almost dispossessed.
00:48:52Great tackle that was.
00:48:54Perfection.
00:48:56Fulcruik.
00:48:59Free kick to Germany.
00:49:02He didn't think so.
00:49:03He thought he won the ball.
00:49:06Brown still asking about the handball.
00:49:09You just never know.
00:49:10Now do you.
00:49:18Your arms out a little bit.
00:49:20As it is.
00:49:22You just never know.
00:49:24Natural.
00:49:25Unnatural.
00:49:27You tell me.
00:49:31Proximity.
00:49:33You just never know.
00:49:35Proximity.
00:49:41Check on that is complete.
00:49:43Good.
00:49:44Germany.
00:49:46Free kick.
00:49:48Sane.
00:49:49Kimmick.
00:49:50Behind it.
00:49:53Good opportunity for him.
00:50:05Simon has organised his wall.
00:50:09It is to be Kimmick.
00:50:11Against the wall.
00:50:12For a Germany corner.
00:50:14Well done the wall.
00:50:15Nice job.
00:50:16Goalkeeper lined him up well.
00:50:17Simon.
00:50:21Not sure it was in.
00:50:22Hitting the target anyway.
00:50:24But he can't take that risk though.
00:50:25Can they ask Spain a question.
00:50:27From a set play again.
00:50:29Heading away by Morata.
00:50:30The goal scorer.
00:50:31Sane.
00:50:32His touch only into the path.
00:50:34Of Koke.
00:50:35Who is looking for the pace of Williams.
00:50:49I think if Koke had a look to his left hand side.
00:50:51He had better options I reckon.
00:50:52Full clip.
00:50:53That was a challenge.
00:50:57Is that?
00:50:58Jordi Alba down.
00:51:04Ouch.
00:51:08That foot just goes up there doesn't it.
00:51:11It just goes up there.
00:51:13He's got to be careful.
00:51:14Yes.
00:51:15Well done.
00:51:16Well done.
00:51:17Well done.
00:51:18Yes.
00:51:19Well done.
00:51:20He just goes up there, doesn't he? He leaps so well.
00:51:31No risk with Jordi Alba.
00:51:33And it is going to offer another opportunity for another exciting young player,
00:51:38Alejandro Valdez.
00:51:40Barcelona, who came off the bench in the 7-0 win against Costa Rica
00:51:44to make his international debut,
00:51:47after only 23 appearances in Barcelona's first team.
00:51:51That because of Geya's injury just on the eve of the tournament.
00:51:56He's going to get another eight minutes plus stoppage time here.
00:52:00Another teenager on the pitch.
00:52:03They've got some talent now, don't they?
00:52:13Sané.
00:52:15It's a Musiala.
00:52:16Fulcruch.
00:52:21Now Germany's substitute has done it.
00:52:25One centre forward at one end.
00:52:28And Fulcruch at the other.
00:52:321-1.
00:52:34Well, we mentioned the substitutions of Speer.
00:52:37Musiala was in a very similar position, wasn't he?
00:52:40Five or ten minutes ago.
00:52:43He chose to go for power.
00:52:45The exact same thing.
00:52:47Running behind the touch.
00:52:49What can you do? What a finish.
00:52:51Keeper was no chance there.
00:52:56Musiala does really well.
00:52:58Head down, right foot.
00:53:01Too quick for the goalkeeper.
00:53:03Too much power on it.
00:53:07Before he can react, it's in the back of the net.
00:53:12Great reaction.
00:53:14How important could that goal be to Germany's cause?
00:53:17It's a wonderful story.
00:53:19The embrace between coach and player.
00:53:22As I mentioned earlier, half of his career
00:53:24in the second tier of German football.
00:53:27An international debut at 29 on the eve of the tournament.
00:53:32And now a World Cup goal.
00:53:37Well done, Hansi Flick.
00:53:39You make the changes very much like Luis Enrique did.
00:53:42Hoping that they affect the game.
00:53:45It's exactly what happened.
00:53:57And that brace being replaced by Janusz Hoffman
00:54:00of Russia-Munich and Gladbach.
00:54:03His second substitute appearance of this tournament
00:54:06in his first World Cup.
00:54:09A 30-year-old.
00:54:14His debut at 28 under Hansi Flick.
00:54:21Right then.
00:54:22Five and a half minutes of normal-time,
00:54:24plus stoppage time to go.
00:54:27Well, we said they didn't have a threat,
00:54:29so he had to do something, didn't he?
00:54:31That's exactly what he wanted and what he needed.
00:54:37The story of the two centre-forward substitutes.
00:54:43Musiala did well in there, you know.
00:54:45The touch which allowed him to run off him
00:54:47to get into the box, into that position.
00:54:49No free kick.
00:54:51And no corner either.
00:54:55Koke down, holding his face.
00:55:00He's trying to shatter it, obviously.
00:55:03Walks into his arm.
00:55:09Ouch.
00:55:11Well done, Hansi Flick.
00:55:13Into his arm.
00:55:18Ouch.
00:55:22I don't know what he wants.
00:55:29One from Sule.
00:55:32Hoffman chasing this.
00:55:33Musiala too.
00:55:34Valde got back.
00:55:44Now it's Germany's turn to start and run in behind.
00:55:54Williams can't keep that in.
00:55:56That shocked the Spanish.
00:55:58Yeah.
00:56:00They're not having it all their own way now, anyway.
00:56:03Nico Schlotterbeck in Dortmund.
00:56:07Who started with defeat to Japan.
00:56:09He's going to replace David Raum.
00:56:12Leighton here.
00:56:24Just an 8th cap for the 22-year-old.
00:56:34So similar to when Musiala got in, wasn't it?
00:56:36When he was left with a 1v1 and he went for power as well.
00:56:41Simon stood up then, as he did again.
00:56:43But there's too much power on that one.
00:56:56One from Rüdiger.
00:57:03But I'm alright in saying it's still not in their hands, Germany,
00:57:05as if it stays the same.
00:57:07You are.
00:57:08They have to beat Costa Rica and hope Spain beat Japan.
00:57:13And a reminder, if Japan were to draw that game,
00:57:16then the goal difference calculator would come out.
00:57:25And then, after goal difference?
00:57:27I'm just testing you.
00:57:28Don't say that.
00:57:29Goal scored, head-to-head.
00:57:33You're very good.
00:57:34You know it all.
00:57:35That's extremely debatable.
00:57:42But only as it stands,
00:57:43it's still time to change the outcome and the permutations.
00:57:54Musiala to win it back for Germany.
00:58:06It's the last thing you want to be doing,
00:58:08giving those sloppy passes away and inviting Spain onto you.
00:58:13Done a lot better in the last few minutes, Germany.
00:58:18Madness to give this away now with a sloppy pass.
00:58:33Petri.
00:58:35Petri.
00:58:45Williams.
00:58:46Morata's run.
00:58:47Has Morata got the chance?
00:58:51We had to time that, the substitute, Schlotterbeek.
00:58:55Schlotterbeek did, didn't he?
00:58:56You're right, he had to.
00:58:58And there's that run again from Morata.
00:59:01He's not offside.
00:59:03Good way to pass.
00:59:05He's got to get back in there and he tackles him, doesn't he?
00:59:10Great touch.
00:59:13Perfection, that is.
00:59:15Not one Spanish player
00:59:17appealed to the referee, so they knew.
00:59:28Williams.
00:59:33Olmo.
00:59:42The next interesting number, of course,
00:59:43as it has been in many of these World Cup matches,
00:59:46will be the time added on.
00:59:51The answer is forthcoming.
00:59:52Six is today's number.
00:59:57It's not too bad.
00:59:59Still time for late drama.
01:00:03Plenty of substitutions.
01:00:04A couple of goals.
01:00:15He has made that difference, though, Morata, hasn't he,
01:00:17with those runs in behind.
01:00:21That's the threat that we've posed mostly in this second half.
01:00:27And, of course, that superb run of his
01:00:29towards the near post to get his goal.
01:00:32He's got it.
01:00:59Laporte.
01:01:03Williams.
01:01:06Trying to find Tadry.
01:01:09Across.
01:01:11Kane Klosterman.
01:01:16Osane for Germany.
01:01:18Kimmich.
01:01:20Fulcrum.
01:01:22That goal scorer.
01:01:24Ball went behind Hoffman.
01:01:27And, of course,
01:01:28that goal scorer.
01:01:30Ball went behind Hoffman.
01:01:33Well, they were committing men forward,
01:01:34trying to win the game,
01:01:37which is understandable
01:01:38in that position.
01:01:41Olmo.
01:01:47Germany free-kick.
01:01:50I think the referee might have
01:01:52let that go on then,
01:01:53because Germany had the ball then.
01:01:55Again, good defender.
01:01:59Daniel Olmo there, 1v1.
01:02:06Schlotterberg.
01:02:09To find Musiala.
01:02:11What a touch.
01:02:18Sané.
01:02:20Musiala's been their best player.
01:02:24Giving them something different
01:02:26for someone so young.
01:02:34Perhaps a nervous header
01:02:37from Carvajal.
01:02:38This could be interesting.
01:02:42Germany corner with a little over
01:02:43three minutes of stoppage time remaining.
01:02:47One quality ball.
01:02:49That's all you need.
01:02:50Someone
01:02:51to go in there and attack it.
01:02:55Can they do it?
01:03:04Fulcrich, the substitute.
01:03:07There's also
01:03:08a different option from this
01:03:11situation.
01:03:14Good quality ball in from Kimmich.
01:03:25Is there another twist
01:03:27in the tail?
01:03:29It's a deep one towards Rüdiger
01:03:30over Rodri.
01:03:38Not the quality ball
01:03:39that they were looking for there.
01:03:42But it's a good one.
01:03:44It's a good one.
01:03:46It's a good one.
01:03:48It's a good one.
01:03:50It's a good one.
01:03:52It's a good one.
01:03:55Ruskets is down and is told
01:03:56in no uncertain terms to get back up.
01:04:02Just runs into Gretzko, I think it is, isn't it?
01:04:04Yeah, there you go.
01:04:06He tries to block him,
01:04:07or he does block him.
01:04:10In the hope that Rüdiger would get it
01:04:11at the back post.
01:04:20Away by Balbe.
01:04:25Luciala again for Germany.
01:04:29Couldn't find Schlotterbeck, though.
01:04:32Williams.
01:04:34Gretzko across with him.
01:04:35Fantastic.
01:04:37Brilliant.
01:04:38Brilliant, Gretzko.
01:04:42Schlotterbeck.
01:04:44Luciala.
01:04:46He's gone round the goalkeeper.
01:04:48And it's a desperate, desperate
01:04:49intervention from Rodri.
01:04:51What a run as well.
01:04:52What a tackle.
01:04:54Then they find themselves on the attack.
01:04:58It's a good run in behind.
01:04:59I don't think he's offside.
01:05:00The way he passes is very good.
01:05:03That touch there and another touch.
01:05:05The keeper manages to force him wide.
01:05:2230 seconds on stoppage time to go.
01:05:32Can the German delivery
01:05:35be more fruitful?
01:05:37Super take from Simon.
01:05:39Great goalkeeping.
01:05:40Very good goalkeeping.
01:05:43And that is the last action.
01:05:45And it is all to play for in Group A.
01:05:47Because Spain, after that draw at the top of it,
01:05:51at the bottom of it,
01:05:52still in there and fighting,
01:05:54but with their destiny not in their own hands.
01:05:58No, after going 1-0 down,
01:06:00they'll take that.
01:06:01Showed good character coming back into the game.
01:06:03Manager made the changes,
01:06:05looking for the reaction,
01:06:06and he certainly got that.
01:06:10They'll still feel confident
01:06:12that they can win that next game
01:06:14and hope that they've done a favour.
01:06:17Spain don't win.
01:06:18Spain do win, I should say.
01:06:20It wasn't a great game.
01:06:22Spain certainly weren't at their best,
01:06:24but Germany tried to upset them
01:06:26and certainly did that in the first half,
01:06:28but showed great character in coming back.
01:06:31They certainly did.
01:06:32And the four-time winners
01:06:34still have hopes of progression
01:06:36in this World Cup finals.
01:06:37Having come from behind,
01:06:39it has finished Spain 1, Germany 1.
