00:00:00Thanks, Guy. And Germaine, and another stat is Croatia's five first halves at this World Cup,

00:00:08four goals in those five, three of which came in the game against Canada. So maybe it's not

00:00:13a surprise that it's goalless at halftime. It's such an intriguing match, though. When you look

00:00:18at it, it's like the tactical battle, like actually like a chess match. You make a move

00:00:22and then we're going to make a move. It's so interesting how Croatia first started with a

00:00:27press. And actually, it's not that Brazil were playing bad, I would say. It's that Croatia

00:00:32are limiting and nullifying their main threats at the moment. Yeah, it looks like, you know,

00:00:37they kind of neutralize each other. And the question is, who's spending more energy on that?

00:00:43Because it potentially could go into extra time. And even if it looks a little bit like Croatia

00:00:49is kind of in charge and has more control, and obviously the midfield is the key to it,

00:00:55I think that Brazil are spending less energy, actually, in that role. And you have always

00:01:00the feeling that with one or two decisive moves into Neymar or into one of the forwards,

00:01:06they can really hurt Croatia. So it's going to be an interesting battle.

00:01:11I mean, it's not got us up out of our seats, has it? Because there really haven't been that

00:01:14many chances. But as both Alex and Jurgen have said, there's a tactical intrigue, too.

00:01:19Yeah, I think, you know, before the game, everyone was saying Brazil were going to come

00:01:23here and score loads of goals. But I mentioned before the game that the patience that Croatia

00:01:28have, the know-how, the experience, they're sucking the life out of the game. And that's

00:01:33what they need to do. That's what they have done in that first half. And they've changed it up.

00:01:37They went from pressing really high to dropping off, giving a low block and sending the ball

00:01:44out wide. And anything that come out wide will deal with what's going to come in the middle

00:01:48of the pitch. So that first sort of 20 minutes was when they really did the hype race?

00:01:52Yeah, I just thought it was because I didn't know how they would approach the game. I thought

00:01:57they would sit in a low block. But this is the first 20 minutes of the game. They all know the

00:02:01jobs. They all know what they need to be doing. And on this side, it comes in into that position

00:02:06and Kovacic is there to get the second pieces. And I thought it would be, OK, Brazil are going

00:02:13to have the ball, make sure you work hard. But they was letting them know from the minute that

00:02:18they're in the game, you're going to have to play really well to beat us today in terms of

00:02:23getting into them little spaces and pressing really high for Brazil. But it didn't happen.

00:02:28It was all Croatia. And I was really impressed with the way they approached the game and let

00:02:33Brazil know that we're here to win. We're not here to just defend and get a counterattack goal.

00:02:39It's can we create something? Can we break the lines when we get it? The only problem is,

00:02:44it's just that lack of quality when they do break them lines.

00:02:47So when you talk about energy and fitness, did they change from the high press to the slightly

00:02:54lower block? Is that going to conserve some of at least their physical fitness,

00:02:58maybe not their mental fitness?

00:03:00Oh, it comes all together. So when Brazil realised after 15, 20 minutes that this high

00:03:06pressure system by Croatia is part now of the game, they try to push it further up the field,

00:03:13but not necessarily chasing now Croatia all over the place because they know the individual

00:03:17quality can beat you in a heartbeat. But it is this kind of messaging between each other saying,

00:03:23you know, we are in here for a battle. We understand. But it's going to be a long game.

00:03:29It's going to be a long game. And I think when you pressurise, it doesn't matter if it's a higher

00:03:36block or in the middle block system. And you think always about what Brazilians next move.

00:03:43It wears you out. It makes you tired. And this is where Paqueta and also especially Casemiro,

00:03:49they were hoping for that. They're saying, OK, we sit back. You might look a little bit better.

00:03:53You have a little bit more possession. But actually, we know exactly what we're doing

00:03:58here, because as soon as I find Neymar and Neymar finds one of the top three,

00:04:02then we're going to we're going to kind of get that chance that we need to break the results.

00:04:07The best player in that first half was a right back.

00:04:11Why do you sound so surprised?

00:04:18I'll tell you why he's the best right back in this game at the moment, because he's literally

00:04:23not even sitting back worrying about the Brazilians and the overload down this side.

00:04:27He's like, well, actually, I'm going to make you worry about me. I'm going to drive forward and

00:04:31get into spaces when I can. Even here, he knows that the space, you change the point of attack

00:04:36and he needs to be there and lead in that attack. And look at his energy just to get forward.

00:04:41And here is sometimes it's just being an option to be a bounce pass. It's not even nothing big,

00:04:46but it's allowing his team to keep possession and get up the field. Once again, being another option,

00:04:52getting forward, making Brazil worry about him. He's been doing it for the whole 45 minutes.

00:04:58Pass and go again and go at speed, driving into space. I just absolutely love it. And this one,

00:05:04we're talking about attacking right backs and being brave on the ball. And to do this at the

00:05:08end of it, it's just been quality the whole half, Michael. This is what managers really want to see.

00:05:14They want to see one against one battles. They want to see, OK, who drives who mad.

00:05:18And in this case, in his case, he's basically telling

00:05:23Vinicius Junior, I'm in charge here, I'm the boss. That's another cat and mouse, isn't it?

00:05:28This is a whole mental approach is that I'm going to go down the wing. I don't care about you.

00:05:31You might be the best wing in the World Cup, but I'm going to go and maybe I'm going to score.

00:05:35And he almost scored. So these one against one battles, you summarize them all over the field.

00:05:40You're going to win the game. Do you know what? I deliberately tried to make that question about

00:05:43the right back as monotone a question as possible so that you couldn't read anything into how I said

00:05:49but go back to that cat and mouse that down down the Brazilian left side to then try and

00:05:54put your own bitch on the back foot. Yeah, because when I was looking at it yesterday,

00:05:57I was like, actually, where you might worry for Croatia is both of their fullbacks.

00:06:02And they've really got to double up. And you can see from the offset that the Brazil was like, OK,

00:06:08these are the targets we're going to area. Neymar's going to come into that space.

00:06:12Obviously, Richarlison also all the options in there, Vinicius Junior. And they've been doing it.

00:06:18Exactly that. And I just think that the position of Danilo has been brilliant because he's got in

00:06:23the center of pitch, which is dragging their midfield out. That's allowing this space for

00:06:28Vinicius in that first 20 minutes. He was the one who was going to get the ball to

00:06:32and the need to get him a little bit more because, like I said, run of itches is taking him

00:06:37the other way. But he's a star, man. He is a danger, man. I just think they're

00:06:41lacking that little bit of a final pass, lack of a little bit of quality,

00:06:46rushing things a little bit. But Vinicius, no doubt, is that danger, man.

00:06:51Who do you think Jürgen at halftime will think they might have to change it more? Because that's

00:06:56what I find fascinating about this discussion. There's certainly, I think, maybe the thought

00:07:02process for Brazil saying maybe we move Neymar higher up the field and we go and add another

00:07:09midfielder to be more solid in midfield. But I hope they don't do it. I think, you know,

00:07:15they're always a little bit on the edge of the more attacking style at the end of the day than

00:07:21getting more defensive. And I think if they're patient and they keep the tempo maybe a little

00:07:26bit higher and they get their wingers into the game and Rafinha we haven't seen yet,

00:07:30you know, I mean, Sosa wins his battles against Rafinha. If Rafinha can maybe get into this game

00:07:35and Vinicius a little bit more on the other side, I think they can add a lot more quality and create

00:07:41more chances. Sorry, I was just going to say, from a manager's perspective and looking at it,

00:07:47so would you, in terms of Brazil, would you not even be worried because you know that they have

00:07:51that threat in attack and just those moments that you're waiting for? And I think that's an important

00:07:55message to your team actually, say no, no, don't worry. Okay, we understand here and there we are

00:07:59a little bit in trouble, but you have enough quality to go forward and decide this game.

00:09:32Tomorrow, ahead of the France game, he's been speaking to Kelly Summers.

00:09:46How long have you and your coaching staff been preparing for this game?

00:09:49Well, we've done a lot of study of France over the last few years, really. They were world

00:09:54champions. We wanted to see exactly what had caused them to be world champions, if you like.

00:09:59And they've evolved and changed through that period. They've obviously lost a few players

00:10:04coming into this tournament as well. So, yeah, it's fair to say we've watched quite a bit.

00:10:13As much as we might highlight Mbappe, we've got to pay due attention to Olivier Giroud and how

00:10:19he gets his goals. Antoine Griezmann has played over 70 consecutive games for France. There's a

00:10:23clue there in how important he is to them. I think he's a phenomenal player. If we don't go

00:10:29into the detail and the specifics for those particular players in a game at this level,

00:10:33then you're not doing your due diligence, really. England have adopted a very attacking approach

00:10:38in the games so far. Is it possible to play that way against France?

00:10:43I think we've actually adopted a very similar approach to how we have always been.

00:10:47But of course, because we've finished well and we've taken our chances,

00:10:51I think the perception's been slightly different. At the highest level, you've got to prepare for

00:10:57the opponent, but we're not spending longer or more hours because we do that for every game.

00:11:06Over recent years, given what this squad have gone on to do, this group of players,

00:11:10have you seen a change in the mentality in them going into big games such as this?

00:11:14Yeah, without a doubt. I think four years ago, we could have talked well,

00:11:18but we didn't have actual evidence of winning big matches. Now, there's less satisfaction with

00:11:25getting to the quarterfinal. There's more desire to go further, and there's more evidence that

00:11:31we've come through these nights well. Do you think other teams view England

00:11:34differently now going into these sorts of matches? We've got credibility now. To get

00:11:39to a semi-final and a final, I think the rest of the world would believe that England are

00:11:43competitive, and they know there's definitely a greater appreciation of what we've done.

00:11:52Would you make that turn of phrase, Jürgen,

00:11:54England have credibility now when it comes to the final stages of a tournament?

00:11:58Yeah, I think this is a big, big point, and you earned it. You earned it through a Final Four

00:12:05approach in Russia. You got that experience under the belt, and then the European Championship,

00:12:10you stepped it up another level and got into the final. You should have won the final,

00:12:16and it's a progression. You brought the majority of the players with you along this path,

00:12:22and I think they can live also now with the expectations of the English fans to win it all.

00:12:29I think they're okay with that. They're not scared of that expectation or that hope.

00:12:34So, I think it's a natural progression.

00:12:38You know Kyle Walker very well. He appears, from what he's been saying to the media,

00:12:43that he is relishing the battle tomorrow night.

00:12:46Well, he's played against him for Man City against PSG, and he's done very well,

00:12:50so that will give him confidence. I just think sometimes you can make that battle too personal,

00:12:57because if you look at Abapi, where he's got his goal from, it's not just coming from the right.

00:13:00I know he's got assists from the left. It's the center of the goal as well, so

00:13:03Stones needs to make sure he's switched on, and when I was playing against a winger,

00:13:11and it would affect my game, so on build-up, I would be so worried about who I'm playing against,

00:13:16then when we was on the build-up, I wouldn't be in my natural position. I'd be too focused

00:13:20on where the player is, and when you do that, when you're going forward, you're not approaching the

00:13:25game how you normally would, and then you're leaving gaps and spaces everywhere else,

00:13:30and I've got some top players we're talking about, Mbappé, Mbappé, Griezmann, Giroud, Dembele,

00:13:36but old-class players. But that's really interesting balance for Kyle Walker because

00:13:40of the nature of Mbappé and how good he is at the moment in the tournament he's having.

00:13:45Kyle Walker might have to sacrifice some of a normal right-back role to focus on just that

00:13:50man, in the same way that you'd man-mark someone. Yeah, but I think the important thing, like Micah

00:13:54just said, is having someone to cover you in those positions and in those moments as well,

00:13:59and what we're seeing a prime example today is Juratovic still doing his job and making the

00:14:04opposition worry about him because he knows he has that balance behind him as well. Jürgen? No,

00:14:10definitely. I mean, it's going to be teamwork. You're playing Mbappé, you've got to double,

00:14:13you've got to kind of shift over there, you've got to make the space as tight as possible.

00:14:17It's all doable. I think if they work as a team and if they are very well aware of their strengths

00:14:22and also their weaknesses, then there's a good chance for England to get through. Okay, if you

00:14:28can see, the Brazilians are in the tunnel and just starting to make their way back out.

00:14:33Casemiro and Alisson there, Croatia, have been out for a minute or two, one stat doing the rounds at

00:14:41the moment. The winner of the first quarterfinal match in both 2014 and 2018 went on to lift the

00:14:48trophy that year. Oh, you can find a stat for anything and everything, can't you, these days?

00:16:03do something to stop Croatia winning that midfield battle. Will Neymar be pushed a little higher up

00:16:11in support of Richarlison? Will Brazil find their flow? Got a free kick straight away for a moderate

00:16:19push. I think whatever Brazil do, whatever Neymar does in this game, he needs to get on the ball,

00:16:27do what he does best. He will come here to see it. When he's on it, he's incredible to watch, but

00:16:35he was off the pace in that first half.
