00:00Without objection the gentleman is recognized for one minute. Mr. Speaker,
00:06the house has lost a giant, a trailblazer for justice, and a good friend for so
00:13many of us, Sheila Jackson Lee, who we honor here today and remember. Born in
00:21Queens, New York, she was among the first women to graduate from Yale and
00:26dedicated her life to public service. For nearly 30 years she represented the
00:31people of Houston, Texas in the House of Representatives. She was a role model for
00:37so many and for young women seeking to serve. She led the reauthorization of the
00:42Violence Against Women's Act, VAWA, and established with her colleagues
00:47Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Not only that, but she authored the George Floyd
00:54Justice Policing Act with so many of her colleagues. The list goes on and on and
00:59on. Sheila was my friend and had a thoughtful approach to foreign policy.
01:04Many don't know her efforts for years, interacting with our colleagues in
01:09Europe and the European Parliament, always willing to participate and to
01:14share her point of view. She was respected and she noticed that dialogue
01:19and diplomacy should be the tools first rather than the last resort. Her legacy
01:28will continue to inspire future generations of leaders. We will miss you,
01:33Sheila, our friend. May you rest in peace. I yield back the balance of my time.
