00:00it's getting a bit tense isn't it he was flexing his he was flexing his pecs when
00:04he came to see you and it does take time for some players to get up get eddie how fit is you like
00:17hey it's your geordie journals we're here in a slightly unusual setting a hotel room
00:23at manchester these two guys either side of me are going to be going to japan of which on next
00:30week's edition on shots tv you'll be able to see little snippets of nikasi united and jordan
00:35cronin and dominic skirt in japan that'll be amazing but before that we've literally just
00:42came away from uh a win a friendly win against whole city with a strange depleted side and we'll
00:49come on a little bit of that in the moment in a moment but let's first talk about probably the
00:54major news line from the whole thing we've talked about before on shots tv calum wilson what's going
01:00on another injury for calum wilson this time confirmed that he's going to miss the start of
01:06the season which yeah further underlines the frustrations with calum wilson and that injury
01:12record feels like it's been injury after injury particularly this year where calum wilson obviously
01:18had that pectoral injury at the start he then came back got a hamstring injury and now he's got
01:23a problem with his back which required an operation so yeah spoke previously on the last show about
01:31needing a replacement i think that's probably needing a replacement times two now with uh with
01:36calum was missing the start of the season yeah i was sick of talking about calum wilson and injuries
01:41i'll move i mean either our last video on youtube our last shots tv video videos throughout last
01:47season calum wilson injuries always a sticking point and yeah it risked derailing last season
01:53in many ways and you could argue to some extent it it did with his injuries and then alexander
01:58couldn't quite carry the mantle as most players playing premier league football
02:04can't be expected to start 90 minutes and play at a top level elite level week after week after
02:10week 90 minutes 90 minutes 90 minutes and it ultimately puts that pressure on alexander
02:15newcastle just couldn't manage and and that's the problem eddie how and newcastle in the transfer
02:21market have to address because calum wilson at 32 or historically has been injury prone the injuries
02:27are not going to vanish overnight as much as we want them to as good a player as calum wilson is
02:33it needs to be addressed and hopefully it will be but wasn't last summer so yeah wait and see
02:39i absolutely love him like i've always thought he's probably one of my most like so there'll
02:44be lots of people out there i think the same one of the favorite players over the last sort of
02:48modern year any casting loads of goals and quality performances but sadly just getting
02:53them out on the pitch that's always been the problem and you mentioned that there don
02:58alexander isaac can only carry the burden for so long he can't be forced to have to play 80 to 90
03:04minutes every single game it had a big impact last season i've got no doubt alexander isaac
03:11will be pushing 30 goals last season if he'd been able to manage his minutes in his time
03:16he's such as his quality um but he was nowhere nowhere near because of those injuries he picked
03:21up injuries himself and i think that was through you know management of his own time on the pitch
03:27they need another striker you can't say they haven't had a third striker since they got rid
03:31of chris wood um and as much as i'm not a fan of chris wood not in the forest chris would
03:37score a heartbreaker st james's park of course the last time he was there
03:41probably equal the amount of goals he scored when he cast it not far off in 18 months in that one
03:45game um but it's just having that extra body calling upon youngsters and such as ben parkins
03:52and others eddie howe didn't want to go there and i see why he didn't want to go there they
03:55need an experienced reliable player to come in and look that could be the thing that could be
04:02something that now happens because of the injury we know he's going to miss the start of the season
04:08he could even miss into the end of the transfer window which me which which brings up two issues
04:15really the fact that they probably were looking if in fact if a buyer had come up this summer
04:21they probably would have accepted a bid for calum wilson knowing his situation he's going to got a
04:25year left on his contract his injury situation etc um probably means that's going to be difficult
04:32now so they're going to have two strikers even though one of them isn't going to be fit at the
04:36start of the season might mean they just go into that market again and get a third striker the
04:40third striker that they haven't had for best part of two years now isn't it 18 months that they
04:45haven't had that third option i think that'll be one one that i hope they really do but
04:51it doesn't sound like things are close no not at all eddie howe said conversations are taking
04:57place daily with people at the club the likes of paul mitchell and things like that and transfers
05:03he wants transfers to happen but as said nothing's close and since that first of july where they
05:10signed four players none of them really blowing any minds or threatening the start and 11 too
05:17much in terms of actually lewis hall was already here yeah uh two goalkeepers who are very much
05:24backups probably third and fourth choice goalkeepers and then lloyd kelly who i haven't
05:30seen so far so yeah it hasn't exactly been probably been one of the certainly the worst summer
05:37transfer window in terms of the first two months of it that we've had since the takeover and
05:43something needs to change i think eddie howe is very clear that newcastle needs signings but
05:49where they will come from and when they will come is not forthcoming at the moment
05:55it's getting a bit tense isn't it no that sounds really silly to say but
05:59we're sitting here now we're only three weeks away from the start of the season and it's quite
06:03clear that newcastle need new signings or indeed need to get players back from injury or up to
06:10fitness very very quickly because the whole city friendly they fielded the strongest possible senior
06:1611 that they could but that included a left back in jamal lewis who probably won't be here yeah
06:23um and then of course in the in the second half after 16 minutes there was a team that started
06:28you know under 21 started to come on as well so jamie miley that first half yeah of course yeah
06:32lewis hall in midfield that midfield will never play a premier league game that back four will
06:36never play a premier league game realistically in terms of that was the strongest team that
06:41could muster three weeks out from the start of the season that is a concern there's obviously
06:45caveats to that we haven't we haven't got the likes of the internationalists that's why japan's
06:51so important yeah it is massive and of course that there's likes of bruno gimaraish is going
06:57to be joining the team out there um a couple of players that aren't going to be joining the team
07:02which we've learned is anthony gordon and kieran trip yeah both of them of course were a massive
07:07part well one of them was a massive part none of that was a bit part player in could have been a
07:12he shouldn't should have been we know that we you know that we know that should have been
07:17um anthony gordon kieran trip yeah both massive parts well one was a massive part of rewind
07:27of england getting to euro final of course as we've just witnessed this summer
07:32um they've been given that little bit of extra time i think it's really good that kieran trip
07:37gets that time he's been suffering an injury for quite some time um and you know there's no it's
07:44not definite that he'll come back and play a major part at newcastle united squad because we know
07:48there's question marks about his future at newcastle united as well but especially as well
07:52for anthony gordon anthony gordon has barely had a rest you would say for the last two years
07:58considering he was player of the tournament as england under 21s was it it was under 21s won
08:03the euros last summer um played center forward of course um and was amazing in that tournament
08:10so it's nice to see them get a little bit of a break and i like that sort of uh approach where
08:15it's a horses for courses rather than just saying everybody back on this date because
08:20i think you need to treat players like human beings at times and i think the fifa schedules
08:24uefa schedules whatever they may be are very unforgiving um with regards domestic and
08:30international football players have been overworked yes i hear you i hear everybody out
08:36there but they earn x y and z yes but if you want the best you've got to treat them like the best
08:42and if you if you're going to flog them then you're not going to get the best and that's essentially
08:47the way football is going at the moment so i do think it's a good thing that they get a little
08:50bit of a break but one player we didn't see anything of which i think will be a concern
08:55i think a lot of people out there will be wondering what is going on with lloyd kelly
09:00yeah because he's been in the building in terms of newcastle for best part of four weeks now
09:09and he's trained a bit i mean you guys went over to germany and did he spoke to train yeah we
09:14spoke we spoke yeah he never mentioned anything about injuries or any issues or um we've seen
09:21him train him he was he was training with me with the squad wasn't i was trying to set you
09:28wasn't because yeah of course him uh team liveramento and there was a few
09:37joe like calum wilson of course went to the squad but what we've learned from uh conversations
09:43recently is that and eddie howe as well he was definitely training he was he was flexing his
09:49he was flexing his pecs when he came to see me did we not tell you about that he was uh yeah he
09:54was giving it the full buff he does right he does he's been working on his chest
10:03no i was just saying because i asked eddie howe after the whole game about lloyd kelly
10:07oh i thought you said he'd been training no no no and eddie howe said lloyd kelly he's not there's
10:14no injury there it's getting up to speed that's the important thing he he suggested there's
10:19differences and it's adapting to the demands of newcastle united there's sort of a phrase
10:25getting knocked about is eddie howe fit which anthony gordon wasn't when he first signed
10:30lewis hall definitely wasn't when he first signed and it does take time for some players to get up
10:36get eddie howe fit as you like it and then we just need that's like kelly fit though he's almost in
10:42his career he's been a player that this has plagued him yeah and that's the concern that a lot
10:47of people out there be thinking is like it's it's just history repeating himself and newcastle signed
10:52another crock we hope not yeah i understand the eddie howe fit argument in premier league games
10:58i would raise questions whether 17 year olds who are coming off the bench who've never played a
11:03minute of first team football are also eddie howe fit and why lloyd kelly couldn't be giving a run
11:09out so there's questions to be answered there but hopefully it will see a bit more of him
11:15certainly at least before the season starts or any of him because i'm sure everyone will be eager
11:20because he's newcastle's marquee signing so far which is stop it which is it's which is a shame
11:25it's painful and i'm sure in the second half of this geordie journals on shorts tv where we'll
11:32talk a little bit more about that about the idea of what the transfer window has been so far and
11:39what we expect to come or want or want and need yes in the coming weeks because there's only
11:47what is it now three weeks three weeks i can't really check your watch for the
11:52for the date yes that's the one we'll see after the break
11:55now we're back part two of your geordie journals on shots tv right of course these two guys
12:11alongside me are the lucky people to be going across to see eddie howe his players in japan
12:17tell us a little bit about what you guys are going to be doing over there and what to expect
12:22for everybody else out there well it's hard to know what i expect in some ways because
12:26neither me or jordan have been to japan tokyo far east a long flight um but really looking
12:33forward to it we're staying in the heart of tokyo near where newcastle will be based
12:39and yeah they'll be playing you all our red diamonds who are exotic it's exotic name that
12:47i hope i've got a pronunciation you probably haven't but no it's fine yeah japanese isn't
12:53one of the languages i know they don't teach that at national world we don't care we don't get
12:58japanese part of the curriculum it's not in the national world no um but yeah they are former
13:04afc champions league winners um but mid table as jordan pointed out yeah is that like the
13:09johnson's paint no no no that's that's major yeah i talked to you the disrespect of the
13:15yugohoma marinus who uh harry kuhl formerly managed recently sacked
13:22um again or was he really yeah yeah oh
13:28we said in one of our last videos on youtube are managed by harry kuhl
13:32yeah failed football league manager i don't know where that crawly town was it really
13:37notts county um a couple others as well yeah um now failed yukohoma
13:43marinus manager what a shame i know leeds legend liverpool not really but he did australian
13:53but yeah um they also reached i say also they reached the afc champions league final um manager
14:00were beaten i think in the process they've recently sacked harry kuhl they may have
14:07appointed someone i looked at both playing squads as well and no disrespect the players
14:11that play these teams but there wasn't any names i recognize from the j league isn't um
14:18isn't exactly one of those it's carrie linick i still play
14:21but no it's not like the chinese super league or even the saudi pro league where you you get
14:30a few names there might be a few but you probably haven't heard of most of them but yeah we'll be
14:36also seeing a training session as well open training session speaking eddie how hopefully
14:42get a couple transfer updates but they've been been scarce so far this summer but what
14:48is exciting as well you go into the saitama stadium and the tokyo national stadium so
14:55world cup stadiums and the saitama stadium world cup semi-final stadium in 2002 the tokyo stadium
15:03was built for the olympics so that's like the olympic stadium so two quite iconic stadiums
15:12plenty to come over on shields gazette and newcastle world over the next week yeah i was
15:16going to say to check out the two websites for all of the work that these guys will be putting
15:20in and of course this time next week you will be able to see little snippets of everything that's
15:26going on in japan exciting exciting for you guys are you excited i am excited because i've never
15:32been to japan before as don mentioned at the start and we're going to see some pretty good
15:37stadiums because i'm a bit of a stadium hey freak oh yeah yeah i like i like your favorite stadium
15:44oh come on saint james's park yes it's got to be but yeah it should be a good trip obviously
15:53there's a lot of commercial value for newcastle as well going to a that's an area they don't tend
15:57to really go to so you know they'll be able to build relationships over there hopefully find a
16:03new following over there and you know make them make a name for themselves so yeah pretty looking
16:08looking forward to hopefully capturing that for the respective said they wouldn't train much over
16:14there he said the focus would be on the two games and stepping up and we'll get the international
16:18players bar the two england lads back involved and be a slightly bigger squad so the travel's grim
16:26it's not who knows same guys six yeah four hours or something like that i think him all right
16:31traveling 26 hours from brazil where he's been at the moment in the cross and of course the players
16:36traveled as you watch this yesterday it's traveled on sunday and so did two of the
16:42geordie journals traveled on sunday to get across there um it's gonna be a it's a funny summer isn't
16:50it in that regard that there's it doesn't feel there's no natural flow to it i would say when
16:58you say the lack of training and almost that that whole game is the outlier that it's like a home
17:03friendly that you get you can really hang your hat on whereas there's nothing else really no well
17:07we were saying on the drive here the likes of anthony gordon kieran trippy i'm gonna get one
17:13tangible pre-season friendly under the belt before the start of the season obviously caveat out with
17:18the fact we've been training with england for half the summer kieran trippy has been playing so
17:23there's an element of freshness to them but yeah one season one game sorry with the with actual
17:30first team squad they're going to be playing with over the next sort of nine months is is interesting
17:36but some players miss all the pre-season conwellson and miss all the pre-season so
17:40yeah they just need to get back up the speed quickly never mind training what we need to hear
17:46and this is an absolute there needs to be some transfer news there needs to be some movement at
17:51this football club there needs to be a kick up the backside if you like yes of the summer i'm going to
17:58come to both you guys separately and i want you to name one position so there is a need to
18:04strengthen out with seeing three or four positions off the top of my head jordan i'll come to you
18:09first what if you if you were to prioritize when you castulated a position where you see now where
18:15you look at the squad and think that's a weakness we need some strength in there well where would
18:20you pinpoint so there's two i'll give one and hopefully one of you see i need one i'm gonna
18:26say right forward it's a position that really needs strengthened probably since last summer
18:32obviously there's question marks around miguel armand's future but again regardless if he stays
18:37or not it is a position that newcastle absolutely strengthen in the last six months or sort of last
18:43year they went inside anthony gordon harvey barnes the left hand side and that right hand side is
18:47probably one of the few positions under the new ownership they haven't touched and for me it's
18:52just a desperate for an injection of of quality and look jacob murphy miguel armand have done
19:00very good jobs for the club and i think they've got a place in the squad if i'm being honest
19:04i think in terms of your starting 11 it is one of them areas i just desperately strengthen so
19:10and i know that's been sort of reflected so far where there was obviously transfer links
19:14to make a little lease here before you went to buy munich it shows that newcastle are willing to
19:19spend big on that area and i think that you know it reflects how much they do need to go and show
19:23in the area so for me it has to be a right forward i throw the same impression you don't i think they
19:28need a goalkeeper possibly no right forward ties in we've talked about the need of striker but
19:37in terms of a striker i think you'd do very well to bring in a striker who would strengthen the
19:43starting 11 so i'll bring it back and say they need a right-sided center back and that's because
19:50the situation was so at whole where you're playing emil kraft and you're playing dan burn center
19:57backs both players historically for newcastle have been played as fullbacks dan burn is i think that
20:03is his best position left center back but emil kraft's not a center back you've got fabian
20:10jamal the cells jamal the cells is out injured fabian chair has a year left on his contract
20:14potential extension could happen there sven botman out injured obviously he's on the left
20:21side as well i think they need someone on that right center back side too
20:27i don't have much faith in the future of the center back positions if you know what i mean
20:32you've got an agent fabian chair who i love i think he's brilliant he's one he's probably in
20:38my all-time newcastle 11 in terms of a center back he's been excellent sven botman probably is
20:44a future player there's no other player yeah you can hang your hat on in the center back position
20:49and i think they need someone in that area so i kind of concur i can't really come up with a
20:54different position i think well there's merits to both of those i think that's where they're
20:58looking that's what we've said that's kind of where we understand that they are they are looking
21:03you do see a lot of these transfer links on social media and there seems to be so many
21:10newcastle native transfer news aggregators out there that they just churn out the same
21:16rubbish most of the time and you'll always hear the proper the solid news from the geordie
21:21journals whether that be on here on shots tv through the shields gazette or newcastle world or
21:28of course on youtube too so i would just always be careful to watch out for people who will lead
21:34you down the garden path with regards to actions isn't it there is a lot of that isn't that is that
21:40i think that's fair to say yeah but i would say the transfer links this summer have been a lot
21:44more quiet you think yeah i think so because maybe maybe sort of the richest club in the world
21:50narrative is war for newcastle because they were linked with every player on this one and that was
21:54probably came from sort of the foreign media in terms of it yeah it was the main source of italy
21:59although yeah that's the one but i feel like there's some other the links have been fewer and
22:04fewer um which might not necessarily be a bad thing because obviously newcastle have made behind
22:09the scenes changes like say paul mitchell's coming the next era so maybe they've tightened up the
22:15the leaks if i think that's undoubted i do think and i think that's important to stress as well
22:19with regards to the links i think this has i think the change behind the scenes has slowed
22:24processes yeah james's park i think that's undoubted redrawn the balance redrawn on the
22:30lines of power has meant that things have come to a bit of a stop eddie howell hasn't admitted that
22:35but we've spoken twice about this subject um and i think from both conversations you get the sense
22:41that things have been more challenging with regards transfers um i mean we've got to hope
22:48that there will be movement to like i said earlier to to present that team tune up about
22:53three and a half weeks or three weeks or whatever away from a start of a premier league season is
22:58concerning and there needs to be a big improvement if that team anything close to that team gets put
23:04out in any of the opening games of the premier league season then there are definite problems
23:09ahead for eddie howe and the rest of the the players and the coach and stuff i'm sure next
23:15week where we'll be talking a little bit more depth about friendlies against who you all have
23:20red diamonds in yokohama f marinos i sounded more spanish i was like it was a little flare
23:31anyway you've heard enough waffle it's always a waft it'll never warm in here it is i'm so hot
23:39it'll never change but i'm sure it'll be a little bit warmer when you guys get it to yeah we'll be
23:44so cheers guys for watching we'll always be on shots tv every monday night half 10 tune in and
23:50we'll see you there next week
