Old Rajinder Nagar Coaching Tragedy: Students Call the Bulldozer Action a ‘Short-term Solution’

Following the tragic flooding incident at an IAS coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar, which claimed the lives of three aspirants, students are expressing their frustration over what they see as repeated short-term fixes by authorities. They allege that despite past incidents and promises of improvement, libraries and coaching centres have been allowed to reopen without addressing the underlying safety issues. The students are now demanding permanent solutions and stringent enforcement of safety regulations to prevent future tragedies.

00:00Well, these are the scenes. So, once again, from the old Rajinder Nagar, less than 48
00:07hours from the unfortunate death that transpired here in this Raj IAS Studies Circle on Saturday,
00:14Delhi Police and MCD have now swung into action much after much efforts of the student community
00:20here and lo and behold, you see bulldozers out on the streets and the MCD is breaking
00:28all the footpaths and the pavements that were made, which basically stopped the rainwater
00:33from evenly distributing during the rainy season, the rainy spell that we had here.
00:39Whether it is a cosmetic move or whether it is a permanent fix that Delhi Police and MCD
00:45have regarded to, we'll have to wait and watch. We'll have to speak, we'll be speaking with
00:50the students here who have been witnessing what has been going on. I have with me my
00:56colleague as well from One India, Keshav Karn and flanked with faces and voices who
01:05have been camping here for the last 48 hours. So, ma'am, you have been here for quite some
01:12time now, you're carrying a newspaper also. What the action that has been taken, are you
01:17happy with it? Myself Jyoti Singh and firstly, I am in pain and grief and literally right
01:26now I am in huge anger, I would say. And I want to express and I want to convey my message
01:33that after losing these three lives, now they have come into action. And now MCD and MLA
01:44and Mayor and concerned authorities of this locality and this area, now they have started
01:51taking action after taking life of three students. Means we will have to pay our life.
02:00Are you happy with the action? At ground level. Right. Okay. But are you happy? Are you satisfied?
02:08At least the demand has been met that these illegal enforcement has been broken. Is that
02:13okay? Or do you need more? The students are demanding more action. We are not satisfied
02:19totally, not satisfied. Why? Why we are not satisfied here? Because you are trying to
02:29create here rumours, you are taking action, you are spreading through your paper press,
02:36but at ground level you are doing nothing. Okay. Okay. This is not going to work in long
02:42term. You are going, you are trying to appease in short term, take some prompt action which
02:48is working long term and we are not here to get from your this propaganda. I get your
02:55point. Please stay with us. I understand the students are basically not happy with the
03:00little action that the MCD and Delhi Police has taken. How do you see this action is going
03:03on here? Sir, this action is taken after the major consequences. This should happen before
03:07the arrangements, before the construction. How can they give the agreements and legislations
03:12before the construction? We have lost many lives. There are around 26 to 25 figures.
03:17They are only saying three. How they give the permissions to this? Students are living
03:21in basements. They are studying in basements. They have illegal permission. People have
03:26problems related to motor. Everything, everything is just stuck up here. Everything is not going
03:31in a way. Now they are doing the, when the consequences has happened, this was to happen
03:36before this. They have lost lives. What about their parents? We are students. We pay so
03:40much of the fees. They make agreements about when you pass, you will have to display your
03:44name in our institute. But why don't they give us the security that you will be safe
03:48with us? You will be here with us. For the whole time you are safe here. Why is this
03:52not assuredly given to our parents that your students are safe? Right, absolutely. And
03:56why no objection certificate they give? And secondly, I would say, why MCD passed this
04:04all illegally? First of all, MCD, all the students are saying that it is not okay. He
04:10is running in this basement. It is illegal. They have been made for commercial purpose,
04:15not for a studying purpose. Which part of the country do you come from? I come from
04:21Bihar. I was born in Bihar. But my education has been done in Bokaro and Rachi. For these
04:26students, a lot needs to be done. And this cosmetic move that Delhi police has resorted
04:32to as of now by breaking the pavements and footpaths, I think and I believe that the
04:39students are demanding much more than this. At least we need awareness from the media
04:44for the students who are unaware about this. We aren't aware about this clogs, water logging
04:49system, the basement things. We are new. We are not from this town. We come from different
04:54cities, different towns. We aren't aware about this. We weren't knowing that basement,
04:59we can study also, we can live here. We were living in basements. We don't know that it
05:03is secured or not. We don't know the water logging system, the wires are hanging. You
05:07can see everywhere the wires are logging. If we step, we are dead. We don't know where
05:11our death is written because of this, because of their misbehaviour. We don't know when
05:15we will be alive or when we will be dead. This is very, very ridiculous behaviour of
05:20Delhi government. This is very horrifying. We got your point. Thank you so much for speaking
05:25to us. Thank you so much. You have made your point. We propose you to spread awareness
05:30for the students who are there. Definitely. We can expect this from media now. That's
05:34what One India is all about. Thank you so much, Jyoti. From here, I want to convey one
05:38very valuable message. There is nexus between power, politics. You guys are future bureaucrats,
05:50I would say. And this is understood by now. If you haven't risen up to this or woken up
05:56to this reality, this is everywhere. This is a corrupt business. We have to see beyond
06:01this. No matter how much we say, hi, hi, Murtabad, Zindabad, nothing will happen. It gets lost
06:07into politics. Why I am saying so? We need a solution. And the solution comes from top
06:11down approach. But let's go. If EEOP is recognized, MCB will come. It's a big deal. MP will come
06:17for vote bank. Absolutely. MP will show their face. Mayor will issue an order. Absolutely.
06:23Encroachment will be eradicated. Basement will be eradicated.
06:26This is only for 70 days. After that, everything will be normal.
06:29I think you... We are not sitting here to protest. But those who are voting, they are calling
06:34them. Who will stop them? Those who are voting, for whom we are giving time, for whom we are
06:38trusting. Who represents us? Our MP ambulance represents us. Where are they today? They
06:42are sitting in AC. Why are we protesting here? Where are our rights?
06:45We have given valuable 3 days' time. Their last choice, desire must have been to study.
06:53I don't know if water is coming or not. Why should we waste our time? There may be rumors.
06:58We will study. That is the temperament here.
07:02I understood, Jyoti. I completely understood. The state from which you are coming, Maharashtra,
07:06Bihar, Jharkhand, these are some of the biggest states that send a lot of students here. And
07:11now, obviously, who will worry about them? Thank you so much, Jyoti. Point is taken.
07:16This is, once again, Pankaj Bishra signing off from Old Rajinder Nagar with video journalist
07:21Furqan.
