Pirates vs. Astros full game highlights from 7/29/24
Transcript
00:00Pirates return to Houston, Texas the first time in five years they'll be admitted made part on a Paul Skeens night in Houston.
00:10So a lot going on as we are less than 24 hours before the trade deadline.
00:15Astros had Jake Bloss scheduled to start today.
00:17He was scratched about an hour before the game.
00:20So you can only speculate what might be out there with a potential deal in the offering.
00:25The Astros will go with a bullpen day instead.
00:27This is Taylor Scott pitching in his third day out of four.
00:30And he starts out the game with a strikeout.
00:32Scott who has been brilliant out of the bullpen now gets his first chance as an Astros starter.
00:37Brian Reynolds in there for the first time since Tuesday.
00:40Swing and a miss.
00:41Good morning, good afternoon, and good night.
00:43Brian Reynolds went after a high fastball.
00:45And so far so good for Taylor Scott.
00:47Back to back strikeouts.
00:48Taylor's done a little bit of everything this year.
00:50Why not strike out the side in his first start as an Astros.
00:53And he does.
00:55Taylor Scott.
00:57What a career season he is having in 2024.
01:01Strikes out the side in his first Astros start.
01:04Tell us, Unite, here at Minute Maid Park and the LSU alum Paul Skeens is on the mound.
01:10He took the loss of that last outing going eight and a third, which was a career high.
01:14The last loss he had before that was against the Arkansas Razorbacks last season.
01:19Just had to mention that.
01:20But he is a phenomenal young man with great stuff.
01:23Averages 99 on that fastball.
01:25Altuve back through the middle, has himself a base hit.
01:28Jose, who had two doubles in the game yesterday, has a leadoff single against Skeens here in the first.
01:34Here is Alex Bregman.
01:36Swing and a foul tip struck him out.
01:38Came up and in with the slider.
01:40And Bregman is Skeens' first strikeout victim tonight.
01:43So he gets the better of the fellow LSU Tiger.
01:46Al Perez pops this ball up.
01:49Houston area native Kee Brian Hayes for the second out.
01:54Paul Skeens strikes out two of the four he faces in the first inning.
01:58And he has 99 K's on the season.
02:01Nothing, nothing.
02:03No score.
02:04Astros and Pirates top of the second.
02:05Taylor Scott will stay in there.
02:07Ronnie Tellez going to start it off for the Pirates.
02:10This ball skied in the air on a 3-1 pitch.
02:12Altuve waves off Trey Cabbage and waits for it.
02:16Puts it away for the first outing.
02:19Swing and a miss.
02:20Got him on a fastball up and in at 94.
02:22Four strikeouts in a five-batter span for Taylor Scott to start this ballgame two away.
02:28I'm telling you, Taylor Scott is putting it where he wants, when he wants it there.
02:33First pitch.
02:34And that's a bouncing ball hit right at Jeremy Pena.
02:37Shortstop has it.
02:38Throws low, but Singleton digs it out.
02:40And the side is retired.
02:41So Taylor Scott, two innings of work, retires all six batters faced.
02:46Now the bottom of the second inning.
02:47Paul Skeens on the mound for the Pirates in a scoreless game.
02:50Jeremy Pena will lead it off for Houston.
02:53The fly ball out to the right of center.
02:55And Bay on his horse.
02:57He'll make the catch for the out.
02:590-2 the count on Singleton.
03:01One more strikeout.
03:02It'll be 100 in his Major League career.
03:04And it is 100 Ks for Paul Skeens.
03:08Let's toss that ball inside.
03:10Yes.
03:11That's a good idea.
03:12That's a really good changeup.
03:13You see the movement on there.
03:15That ball turned over and just run away from the barrel.
03:18There's so many pitches in his arsenal that he can get swing and miss on.
03:21Here's the 2-1.
03:23Swing and a foul.
03:25Foul territory left side.
03:27And Hayes measures it and reaches into the Pirate dugout
03:31and onto the railing to make the catch.
03:33What a terrific play by the gold-lover in his hometown, Key Brian Hayes.
03:38Once he has put on the Astros uniform,
03:41he has found himself in a different place than he's ever been in his career
03:45in terms of success.
03:47This one is towards Pena.
03:48Jeremy with a lot of range and a pick at first by Singleton.
03:53Three perfect innings for Taylor Scott thanks to a great play by Jeremy Pena.
03:59That ball wasn't hit hard,
04:00but it was directly in between Jose Altuve and Jeremy Pena.
04:05Pena had to range wide to his left and throw back across his body,
04:09kind of an in-between hop for John,
04:11who was able to maintain the bag and get the out.
04:14Great three innings from Taylor Scott.
04:16Paul Skeens returns.
04:18Twenty-six pitches through two.
04:20Has retired six in a row after Altuve's soft ground ball up the middle
04:24that got through for a hit.
04:25Three strikeouts.
04:26Here's Victor Caratini, the former Cub.
04:28Hits toward the Crawford boxes,
04:30but Reynolds on the track makes the catch one out.
04:33Caratini is gone.
04:34Strikes out another.
04:35Cabbage down to a knee.
04:36And that's the fourth strikeout for Skeens.
04:38So first time through the order.
04:39Four strikeouts.
04:40And back to the top for Altuve,
04:42who is the lone base runner of this game.
04:44A soft bouncing ball that got through the middle.
04:46Swing and a soft fly ball.
04:48Right field.
04:49Palacios drifting it.
04:51And he takes care of that.
04:52And Paul Skeens works a one, two, three, third.
04:54He's retired nine in a row.
04:56Now we go to the fourth inning scoreless ball game
04:58as Caleb Ort will come on for the Houston Astros.
05:02Here's Palacios.
05:03In hard and a nice play again.
05:05Pena on the first.
05:06In the dirt.
05:07In the dirt.
05:08Another great pick by Singleton.
05:10That combination picking up the last out of the third,
05:13the first out of the fourth.
05:14Brilliant play both times.
05:16The ball was hit to his right as he was playing
05:18right behind second base.
05:20Had to go to his right.
05:22Went down to a knee.
05:23Made the stop.
05:24Got back up through to first base
05:26and completed the out.
05:27What a play.
05:28Oh, Palacios is all right.
05:29Looks like he's kind of limping.
05:31Yeah, looks like he got a little limping.
05:32I'm hoping it's more ankle than it is muscle.
05:35Paul Skeens back out there for his bottom half
05:39of the fifth inning.
05:41The Pirates have made the change.
05:43Joshua Palacios cannot continue.
05:45Michael A. Taylor is out in center.
05:47J.J. Wanvey moves from center to right.
05:50So Paul Skeens, moments after throwing his second wild pitch
05:54of the season, hits his fourth batter of the year.
05:57And the table is set for Trey Cabbage
05:59who struck out his first time up.
06:01Struck him out.
06:02He strikes out Cabbage.
06:04And actually snatches the ball back.
06:06Feel a little fire in here right now
06:08as he goes against Al Touba.
06:10Ball towards third.
06:11Off the glove of K'Brien Hayes in the left field.
06:14Two runs are going to score.
06:16K'Brien, one of the best defensive third basemen in the game,
06:20had a potential double play going to left field.
06:23Sometimes you need a break, and the Astros got one there
06:27because you're talking about a third baseman
06:29with the highest fielding percentage in the major leagues.
06:32That one just skipped over his glove, like you said,
06:34played it to his left.
06:35The Astros able to take advantage.
06:38Pirates still looking for their first baserunner
06:40here in the sixth inning.
06:41Trailing 2-0.
06:42Here's Grondahl.
06:43Drive to right.
06:44Yasmany Grondahl going to clear the deck with a cannonball.
06:48And he could very well stand and admire it
06:50as the Pirates are on the board.
06:52There goes the perfect game.
06:54No hitters.
06:55Shutout with that big swing from Yaz.
06:57Two to one.
06:58Well needed right there.
06:59Cut the deficit into half with one swing and a bat.
07:01He has Yasmany Grondahl taking care of business.
07:04Three of the first six innings,
07:05the Astros have put runners on base with nobody out.
07:08They've added pressure to Paul more than we've probably seen
07:12in probably any of the starts this year so far.
07:15It's a one-two count to Jake Myers.
07:17Swing and a ground ball to third.
07:18Hayes gloves.
07:19Goes to second for one.
07:21Relay.
07:22Two.
07:23Double play.
07:24And they got him out of the inning.
07:25Hayes ended up on his seat as he was falling down
07:27to make that throw.
07:29And he gets Skeens and the Pirates out of it.
07:31Starting and ending.
07:32Ending double play.
07:33Now two are on for Cruz.
07:35And if they were careful with Reynolds,
07:37let's see if Cruz can really make a play right here.
07:40Drive right.
07:41Field base hit.
07:42O'Neal Cruz ties the game into second base
07:46with a rip, roar, and double for the Cruz missile.
07:49Two-two.
07:50And now it's back to the top of the order.
07:52Michael A. Taylor, who replaced Palacios in the fifth inning
07:57when Palacios came out with the left hamstring discomfort.
08:00Runners take off.
08:02And the pitch is called a strike.
08:03It was off the plate.
08:04But another double steal for the Pirates.
08:06And now the go-ahead run is at third base
08:09and an insurance run in scoring position with two outs.
08:12High fly ball.
08:13Left center field.
08:14Clear the deck.
08:16Cannonball coming.
08:19Michael A. Taylor has given the Bucs the lead in the ninth
08:26with a three-run blast.
08:29Blast indeed.
08:31The ball almost knocked the train off the track.
08:33Michael A. Taylor.
08:35What a time to clear the deck with a cannonball.
08:40The one thing in this ballpark you don't want is free passes.
08:44It is definitely a right-hand hitter's ballpark.
08:47Jose Altuve knows that for sure.
08:50He's got one thing in his mind, one swing
08:53trying to tie this ball game up.
08:55Altuve in the left field.
08:56Dying quickly.
08:57That's going to be a base hit.
08:59The bases are loaded.
09:01Tying run on first.
09:03Winning run at the plate in the form of Alex Bregman.
09:07Bregman in the center field.
09:09Falling quickly.
09:10It's caught.
09:11Everybody has to get back to their bases.
09:13Caratini thought about trying to score,
09:15but no reason having a play at the plate in a 5-2 game
09:19with Jordan coming up inside.
09:21Ball four will force in a run.
09:23It's now a 5-3 game.
09:25The tying run moves into scoring position.
09:28Caratini crosses the plate.
09:30Jazz McCormick will pinch run for Alvarez at first.
09:33Valencia and Ardiles hopped it up.
09:36Cruz is under it.
09:38The Renegade is going to save it and raise the Jolly Roger
09:42in back-to-back comebacks.
09:45A battle in Buccos.
09:47Beat the Astros.
09:49Two phenomenal games on the road in back-to-back fashion.
09:54That's so good.
09:55That's a lot of good baseball right there.
