00:00okay lads when I say stop you stop boxing when I say break take a step back keep
00:05your hands up protect yourself at all times good luck to you both good luck so
00:09time for Joe Cooper's professional debut in the crunk colors which of course are
00:14the champs camp colors as well Joe Gallagher in his corner champs camp
00:19reopened by Joe in February think about some of the great names from the past
00:23Ensley Bingham Carl Thompson etc a couple of fighters in the corner with
00:26him tonight McCauley McGowan and Marcus Morrison too so trying to get that camp
00:30going again and out he comes at 18 which is young to make a professional boxing
00:35debut it's a massive night for the young man it is a massive night indeed and yes
00:39there's colors and the champs camp coming back it's great it's great for
00:44boxing isn't the end of the day because the Manchester scene has always been
00:47very good indeed a lot of those fighters that you mentioned that means the
00:52Bingham's of this world and Carl Thompson's they were really good good
00:57fighters the great tradition up there let's so let's see what mr. Cooper can
01:02do here and at 18 years of age yet big future ahead of me from John Henry
01:09mascara who's only won five times in 18 fights he's been beaten 13 times he's
01:14only 22 fighting out of Columbia with the colorful black red and yellow
01:20trunks on Joe Cooper who is the cousin of the former world champion Billy Joe
01:28Saunders he's not here tonight but no doubt from somewhere hoping that his
01:34family member can make a winning debut here
01:38I think Cooper here has started work well there Fletch lovely jab nice
01:56movement and he's in and out with the feet so he's not going over that front
01:59foot too much and he's setting he's back and not really well with the jab so he's
02:03boxing well up to nowhere Joe Cooper decided to turn pro after being
02:09overlooked for the European junior championships but he's not actually
02:12fought for two years so the fact he's come out looking sharp like this is
02:17maybe a little bit surprising there could have been a bit of ring rust in
02:20there but he's putting his punches together really nicely here early on
02:24they're not the easiest of debuts against an opponent with 18 and contests
02:29under his belt has only been stopped I think twice also Mosquera so you know
02:34this isn't an easy night for Cooper but he's boxing sensibly up to now he's got
02:39to keep it going and maintain maintaining what he's doing with the jab
02:43there you go four rounds this one at middleweight the action and the
02:48atmosphere is going to continue to build the very exciting 21 year old Cuban
02:53Yadier Herrera is next then we've got Belfast against Glasgow Cole Murphy
03:00against Jack Turner Pierce O'Leary against Arafoli and then Connor Quinn
03:03against Connor Kelsey the top of the bill tonight 12 rounder for the vacant
03:08Commonwealth flyweight title this has been a nice controlled measured opening
03:15round on debut night the bed pushes Joe Cooper
03:31there's the belt and no doubt Joe Cooper satisfied with his first three minutes
03:36in the professional ranks
03:40looks like we got ourselves a bad man right here we talked enough in these
03:50territories men will come try you they will take from you until you are
03:57wiped clean from this leg use that much this year
04:05haven't had much need of it yet horizon an American saga
04:14welcome back to the SSE arena in Belfast Joe Gallagher in conversation
04:22with Joe Cooper there was a lovely moment when he sat back down we've gone
04:25for the break and the first words that Joe Gallagher said was welcome to the
04:29process I think he was fairly happy wasn't he in that corner
04:42works carry on working behind the job but just watch what's coming back
04:46mascara's you can see keeping the guard nice and high so pretty basic guard
04:52mascara's got they're keeping their guard nice and on then hoping to come
04:55back with the odd counter Joe Gallagher was on about there is that when he's
05:00coming working with that job and using that right hand as he's moving forward
05:03just got to watch his defense a little bit because that left hand of his is
05:07occasionally a little bit too low
05:11mentioned it's only 18 Joe Cooper mascara the man that he's in there with
05:16tonight by his debut in Colombia as a 16 year old that was six years ago he's
05:20lost his last nine fights his last 14 have been in England the switch he
05:28mentioned only been stopped the once that was last time out in the second
05:35round by Daniel Francis at York Hall in May so there's a lot of experience on
05:40the mascara side of things against this teenager who's fighting as a
05:44professional for the first time in Belfast this evening
05:48occasionally Cooper just as I said he's just through that right hand he shows a
05:52very fast sharp right-hand counter so he's got to draw the lead of mascara and
05:56then come back with that shot he has fairly fast reactions does Cooper works
06:01well with his jab but it's that right-hand counter that could do the
06:04damage here if you can just draw the lead of his opponent and then come back
06:09with that shot he's quick off the mark with it
06:14what will he be feeling like in there Ritchie can you think back to your
06:19professional debut what's it like on opening night for a boxer well you're
06:23opening night as a pro you're a little bit nervous but you've just got to settle down into the
06:28contest and listen to your coach and box sensibly like he's doing he's
06:34working well behind his jab yeah it's exciting isn't it for your first one
06:37you know it's a big stage for him television cameras are on him so yeah
06:42there's a little bit of pressure but he looks like he's enjoying it and yeah
06:46taking taking me back I certainly didn't have the cameras for my first fight but yes it's
06:53exciting times on your first turn pro
07:00half a minute to go in the second scheduled for four at middleweight and a
07:05very experienced man in his corner Cooper in Joe Gallagher
07:13something too much by way of ambitions at this point from Mosquera that Cooper's
07:19been able to pick his shots do his work relatively comfortable in there
07:26good shots there from Cooper, I think Mosquera he felt them yeah he's just
07:32on that back foot and keeping that guard nice and high good work from Cooper
07:36a couple of left hooks right at the end of the round that Cooper will have enjoyed landing
07:43you combed through every last piece of evidence you made the final impossible
07:50connection
07:56and all the while you were soaking in the bath audible there's more to imagine
08:12when you listen
08:14jab step across all right don't forget right hand left upper body right hand
08:19left uppercut variation of the jab, jab head, jab body, jab body, jab head as he
08:25steps back right hand left hook, all right, you hear me, change the variation of the jab, you have to ram everything, jab
08:31these are those shots Richie right at the end of the round those two left
08:35hooks that he caught Mosquera with yeah a couple of good shots there it was
08:38exciting end to the round it's interesting that the majority of the
08:43advice that Joe Gallagher is giving in between rounds everything has to work
08:47off the jab that's what he wants Cooper to do yeah it's good coaching isn't it
08:50Joe Gallagher he knows his stuff and in these situations you just you can't be
08:57too impatient you just gotta keep picking away keep boxing away with that
09:03jab don't get impatient and look for the openings because obviously making your
09:11pro debut yeah you want to try and be impressive but sometimes you can try a
09:15little bit too hard so just stick to your boxing and then those opportunities
09:19will present themselves the fact he's in the champs camp colors tonight brings
09:25back memories of the wonderful work that Phil Martin did in the Moss side gym
09:30reopened by Joe Gallagher in February of last year
09:35produce world champions brought the community together really was a huge
09:40part of the boxing scene in Manchester and will be again of course
09:45boxing against him he was a tough tough man and went on to win a few titles as a
09:56pro as well yeah Moss side guys they were all quality they really were
10:03remarkably well as well to grow a beard as full as that by the age of 18 see
10:12that's good shot they're switching the top downstairs go for it now so he feels
10:19that he's landed a couple of good shots there they've had an effect on his
10:22opponent so he's confident recognized that he's landed a couple of good shots
10:27there Cooper nice and accurate tonight but she has me nice and accurate behind
10:30the jab and then the follow-up work tends to hit the mark as well he's box
10:35within himself as he's kept a lid on his emotions and looks really comfortable in
10:39there comfortable sensible I think is the word as well like I say against
10:44their opponents with 18 contests under his belt I think he's boxed with a bit of
10:50maturity here to now as Joe Cooper so he looks a good prospect indeed yes nice
10:56right hand downstairs set it up set up again behind that jab there is again
11:01look and the left hook now they'll start taking their toll on the opponent but
11:05that wasn't a bad right of a good there Mosquero just come back with just to
11:09remind Cooper that he's still in there the good body shots there from Cooper
11:21Joe Gallagher continues to shout use that jab that's what he wants him to do
11:25get behind that left jab
11:29there's that fast right hand counter I've seen it for a while that was a good
11:39shot
11:43listen into the Cooper corner yeah okay just gotta be careful that same team
11:49just look at it pickpocket that right hand over your lead hand on I and as
11:52you're coming in you're catching one or two three shots don't get giddy and
11:56running square on chin up hold your composure all right okay go on the last
12:00round now it's my come and try and put it on you a little bit all right use your
12:03feet okay use your feet to keep that distance and step back put your jab Joe
12:07jab hard jab light jab jab right hand the cushion back to the ropes is there
12:12jab right hook to the body back out jab again one two get the hands back up jab
12:17right hook left hook to one right hook to the body you land it once or twice you
12:20keep getting react from the top of the bill tonight the vacant Commonwealth
12:23flyweight title a fight between Connor Quinn of Belfast he's arrived at the
12:28arena and he's up against Connor Kelso from Doncaster big night for both of
12:33them top of the bill and this place here in Belfast will be bouncing by the time
12:37that those two make their ring walk it's fascinating to listen to Joe who's the
12:42calmest man in the room but he's giving so much advice out to Joe Cooper between
12:46rounds and really reassuring him about everything that's doing in there yes
12:50it's part of you know obviously a coach that's gonna we've got to give good
12:54instruction at the same time motivate the boxer and I think he did that there
12:58he's happy with what he's seeing I'm quite pleased as well in terms of a
13:04prospect that we're watching here and Fletch because it's not been in one way
13:10traffic he's up against a tough kid and he's asked to practice a few things and
13:14experiments but I think he's done well up to now for his age he looks like it
13:20that he really has something I think that's a really important point to make
13:23I think the words you used in about the second round mature is probably that
13:28the best word to describe what we've seen from him tonight based on the fact
13:31and we reiterate this again he hasn't fought competitively for two years so
13:36there would have been a bit of rust nerves because it's his professional
13:40debut he's still only 18 years of age but if you do the eye test you would
13:45suggest that that's the backstory would you because he looks like he's been in
13:49there a lot more than he actually has he looks like a more seasoned fighter
13:53from what we've seen in the first three and a bit rounds as a professional
13:57absolutely got some nice little moves as me as he's coming forward occasionally
14:01just faint with the front foot just to try to draw the lead from his opponent
14:04there he was there look step in step out and just try and draw the opponents over
14:09the front foot or actually draw or trigger that the jab from his opponent
14:13trying to do that confident box to instruction I like what I see here
14:33joke Gallagher was on about they're walking forward and coming square just
14:38got caught with the right to book as he got his opponent onto the ropes there so
14:41you have to learn from that when you get your opponents on the ropes then
14:43when you've got to use the jab and just they've got nowhere else to go so you've
14:47got to measure the target then with that shot before the big punches start flying
14:53see mascara consider opening up in there inside the final minute of the fourth
14:59and final round good body work coming in from Cooper that's what Joe Gallagher
15:06said in that corner didn't he that Mosquero might come in this round and
15:09have a go better for me suppose at this stage of the career Joe Gallagher is a
15:16teacher and then that relationship develops and changes direction the more
15:20experienced the fighter becomes yeah exactly
15:28all in all though rich I think they'll be really pleased by what they've seen
15:31over four rounds here yeah I think so they've got a good kid here not bad at
15:42all there's the final bell and Joe Cooper did I just take a left hook on
15:48the chin at the end of the round Joe Cooper could be satisfied with these
15:51nights work there's a Macaulay McGowan on the right Marcus Morrison on the left
15:56that the experience Joe Gallagher in the middle and smiles all around in the
16:00corner yeah it's been a good night for them hasn't it it's a good performance
16:05there Joe Cooper for his opening contest and one that he'll learn from he'll
16:11learn it from those four rounds rather than just go in there and nothing guys
16:14out left right and center then he's learned from those four rounds against
16:17the stubborn opponent when I start stumbling over names like that I find if
16:21you give me a short sharp bang on the back of the head I tend to spit the
16:24words out a lot better no just a future record and you'll get tremendous
16:28satisfaction out of doing it as will our MC Thomas Trivell will get tremendous
16:33satisfaction from no doubt announcing Joe Cooper as the winner Thomas
16:40ladies and gentlemen after four rounds of boxing our referee in charge Lee
16:45Every scores this contest 40 to 36 for your winner and successful tonight in
16:55his professional boxing debut Joe the showstopper Cooper
17:05so all four rounds to Joe Cooper on his professional debut the showstopper at 18
17:11years of age is off and running and he could be proud of what he's done here in
17:16Belfast tonight
