00:00And it began, well, certainly the first 15 minutes there in the ascendancy. Harry Kane
00:14shot blocked by Zimmerman. That's how it went down in Somerset. But then the Americans,
00:18to be fair, really came into the game. Krzysztof Pulisic, the Chelsea player, rattling the
00:23crossbar. No goal for the Californians to enjoy. But, Roy, a proper game on our hands
00:30here. Yeah, difficult for England. They've not got going. They look off it. Space is
00:34everywhere. Losing the midfield battles. They've been sluggish with their passing out from
00:38their back. Maguire has given away, kicked it out of play. And that would have encouraged
00:42USA. And they've obviously got a grip of this. They've had certainly the better chances.
00:48They've been comfortable. They've been neat and tidy. Big half-time talk from Gareth
00:52Earworthy. He panicked in terms of making changes. But a bit of a reality check. England
00:59need to liven up. They started the half well, England. And they ended the half well. That's
01:03the thing. You have to give America credit, USA. Because, like, McKinney and Adams, they've
01:09been very good. And Moussa, they've been very good, very tight. But we've given them the
01:12opportunity to be like, we're not passing it quick enough. And a couple of occasions
01:14that we have passed it quick, we've got straight into them. And so that's what we've done quickly.
01:20You look at it, this is the kind of play that's going to break them down. Great passing
01:24to Saka. Good one-two. Jude Bellingham, good move off of him. Then Saka getting on the
01:28outside. And then now, you're hoping that Harry Kane can put it in. That's a good block
01:31from Zimmerman. You have to give him credit for that. It's a good block. You know, he's
01:35got himself in a good position. But that's not too many times that we've passed the ball
01:39at that pace. Again, this is a good bit of play from Luke Shaw.
01:43And this is right at the end of the half.
01:44Yeah, this is right at the end of the half. Again, but we played it really quickly. Got
01:47some great skills from him. And then just behind Bacayo there. But this is the one.
01:53This is where we've been in a load of times in that position of pitch. Great pass through
01:57from John Stones. Again, that's a good pass from Luke Shaw. And now, Bam, I think he should
02:01go across the goalkeeper. But that's what we can do when we do it quicker. That's what
02:06moves them. That's what gets them out of position.
02:08Gary, it seemed not surprisingly, maybe for a lot of Americans, it took them 15 minutes
02:11just to settle down into the game and the magnitude of it. But when they did, they played
02:15really well, didn't they? And fashioned a couple of really good opportunities.
02:18Yeah, we had far too many passes at the back between Harry Maguire and John Stones. Didn't
02:21get it through into midfield. Ian's just shown another one near the half. But their midfield
02:25three, Moussa, McKennie and Adams, I think have made our midfield three look sluggish.
02:29We were talking about Bellingham before the game. We were talking about Mount. But they
02:32just put a group of passes together on that far side.
02:34I just want you to watch Harry Maguire here. I think he's really poor on this one. You've
02:37got to get that near post zone. Just watch Maguire. McKennie gets in. Harry just goes
02:43and marks his man. But you can't do that. You've got to be that near post.
02:46He actually creates the space.
02:47Yeah, he does. And you can't do that. And Pulisic, I mean, they came into the game at
02:51this point. They were just brighter and sharper. And everything that we were doing, we didn't
02:54get anything right really in this period of the game. And we know Pulisic's talent. Massive
03:00talent. He's lucky here, Jordan Pickford. He's beaten there. And it was a massive wake-up
03:04call that first half. We know that USA were very strong in the first half the other night.
03:08And they did weaken in the second half. And England will be hoping that happens here as
03:11well.
03:11What's the key for England in the second half? Is it tempo?
03:13Yeah, tempo up the pass. But even out of possession, there's gaps everywhere. They're
03:17not closing down as a team. It's been comfortable for USA. It's just get the distances right,
03:21a bit of communication, particularly from the senior players. Obviously, Garrett's pulled
03:24stones towards the end, saying get higher up the pitch. Get back to the basics right.
03:28They're just too many spaces out of possession.
03:31That was definitely the message that was relayed back to us that Garrett Southgate had said to
03:34them, get higher up the pitch.
03:35Yeah, it was. And what we've got to be careful of is that I feel some of the times Mason
03:39Mounts is going across too quickly, leaving a space in there for Tyler Adams. Then they
03:43get out. Kyle Sacko's going into leaving Anthony Robinson to get up the side there. And then
03:48they're playing into us. We just have to get tighter with our pressing. We have to get
03:52it right.
03:53I think Foden, I mean, I know he's not playing. But for Phil Foden not to be playing in England's
03:57start in 11, I think he's a real shame because he's a massive talent. I think he's our best
04:00player, our best talent by a mile in this country. And he should be playing in that
04:03team.
04:04Well, if it carries on more like this, there's every chance I would imagine that Phil Foden
04:07will come on in the second half. We'll be back for that. But before that, a chance to
04:10win big in our competition with the prize fund currently over £40,000.
04:17Time now for your chance at home to win an amazing £30,000 and an extra goal busting
04:22bonus. Every goal scored during the tournament will add an extra £250 to the £30,000 prize
04:28pot. Count up the goals and count up that jackpot. For your chance to win, just go to
04:34the website. Entries cost £2. Text GOAL to 80567. Text cost £2 plus your standard
04:41network rate message. Or post your name and number to GOAL22, PO Box 7558, Derby DE1 0NQ.
04:50Entrants must be 18 or over. Paid entry routes close at 10am on Monday 9th January. Good luck.
05:04We'll have live coverage of a trio of matches tomorrow with three of the biggest names in the
05:13game in action. Robert Lewandowski's Poland take on Saudi Arabia. France and Kylian Mbappe face
05:18Denmark. Argentina and Leo Messi need to bounce back from the loss to Saudi as they face Mexico.
05:24Argentina out if they lose. Phil Foden, were he to come on, who do you think it would be for, Gary?
05:31I think he may bring Saka up, I wouldn't. I think I'd probably change him for Mount and put him in
05:36midfield. That's one thing we know about the first game. England did have good options off the bench.
05:41Rashford, Trent Alexander-Arnold could come on. Foden, Grealish and the USA were weaker in that
05:47second half the other night. You could probably see where Phil Foden's skill and his ability in
05:52those areas could cause problems. I would like to see the boys start and then we can just play like
05:59we know we can. Pass the ball a bit quicker, a bit more movement and maybe take the chances when we
06:04get them. That's what we need. They also need not to panic. He has great options but Garrett said
06:10before the game, he trusts his players. Sometimes listen, give them a bit longer. I'm just saying
06:13in the middle of the tunnel, the Americans out there in a huddle, they're thinking, aren't they
06:16Roy? Come on, more of this. There is a real opportunity. Yeah of course, but the initiative
06:20is up to England. They've got the better players, the better squad, they've got better options off
06:24the bench. It's up to England just to turn up. They've not turned up yet. Let's rejoin Lee Dixon,
06:30Sam Atterface then for the second half. Cheers Mark. Lots of political and moral issues have
06:37been highlighted at this World Cup. Some thought England might copy Germany's protest gesture
06:43today. It was never in Gareth Southgate's plan but the FA have tonight lit up the Wembley Arch
06:49in the rainbow colours in support of the LGBT community.
06:58There is something tricky about the USA for England. It's the third meeting between these
07:02two sides at a World Cup. Every one of them taking place in the group stages.
07:07USA winning in Brazil. Massive shock in 1950. The 1-1 draw of the World Cup in South Africa in
07:142010 and both tournaments didn't end well.
07:22England immediately have a problem to deal with with Jude Bellingham going down after
07:26a collision on halfway and that's left space which the USA want to exploit.
07:31Come on, come on, come on.
07:37Moosa. Anthony Robinson and Nicola Rice. Well the last thing Lee Dixon that Gareth Southgate
07:44wanted was for England to start on the back foot again. Exactly. Moosa just having acres of space
07:50on the edge of England's box. That's the last set. I think the most important thing is to stay patient
07:59but moving the ball quicker and all of that. You've got to run about as well when you haven't
08:03got the ball. Close the ball down. Close the guy on the ball down. Make his pass a rushed one.
08:13I've seen Karl Walker just chopped to the bench. He was in the dressing room a little
08:18bit longer than anybody else. He's coming back from an injury. Hasn't played for a long time.
08:29One more.
08:37Now trying to put pressure on Zimmermann and did enough to force him into a rather awkward back pass.
08:52That 2010 game was famous for a Rob Green mistake in Rustenburg allowing Clint Dempsey's shot to
08:58squirm underneath him. U.S. had some recognizable names. Two English supporters then out at all.
09:05Dempsey, Holden, Lannan, Donovan, Carlos Boccanegra, Tim Howard all played in England in their time.
09:15Pressure from Mount trying to upset Zimmermann.
09:18Stuart Holden's doing commentary. USA sat behind and said he was going to
09:28give us a right good thumping tonight. Can't argue with him at the moment. Still 0-0 though.
09:48Trivia.
09:58Trying to return it to him. He couldn't squeeze it past Robinson and now the
10:02break is on for the States again. Pulisic dribbling menacingly.
10:09Wright trying to get it onto his right foot. Does that block by Sturtz. Comes back to McKennie.
10:15This is danger for England.
10:19And it's that threat on the counter-attack which has caused them
10:22significant problems already which is threatening them again. Yeah they broke really well with
10:26Pulisic and then this is good defending from Stone's eye on the ball just stays with his man.
10:32Your job there is to stop the shot.
10:38It's not been a massive improvement you have to say.
10:41This would suggest at some point Gareth's out of his technical area that he can have a change
10:47or he'll just sit for a little bit longer as Roy Keane said.
10:55He made me remember the second group game at the European Championships was in which
10:59England drew 0-0 with Scotland. Wasn't a particularly eventful match from their point of view.
11:11On that occasion a point was enough to qualify for the last 16.
11:23Sterling looking for an avenue.
11:27Saw that Tyler Adams could be exposed and it was good covering from Anthony Robinson.
11:32Yeah he was wide and a look outside him to the left and then saw the danger inside. It's good
11:38full-back play you've got to know when to come narrow with your centre-back and that was one of
11:41those occasions. Now being tracked by Leeds United's Tyler Adams the captain of the US men's national team.
11:58Another one who's thriving under Jesse Marsh at Leeds United.
12:08Now a bit of space for him.
12:21He's again covering.
12:28They're trying to get back.
12:29US coach Greg Berhalter has been speaking really positively about England in the build-up to the
12:56tournament. Called them a scary opponent and labelled them contenders for the trophy but the
13:02first half was reminiscent of the most recent summer of struggle after England's last tournament campaign.
13:16Now they've got some room and Robinson is struggling to get back.
13:20Bakai Isaka and that's great covering from Tyler Adams and he knows it. He has every right to stand up.
13:29Giving himself praise because Robinson was completely out of position there.
13:33Foolishly give the ball away in midfield and Robinson giving an option high and wide.
13:40That just opened up the space for Isaka. What a run from Adams to get back.
13:50Maguire could have been costly for England. Tied up by Luke Short.
14:20Okay, flicking it on towards Mason Mount. Getting under control quick enough.
14:30The idea was right from England though and it was another deft touch by the
14:34England captain to get them on the front foot.
14:43England had a couple of nibbles at Tim Ware there.
14:50Luke Short caused the damage. That's why inadvertently steps right into his left boot.
15:50So
16:13trippy.
16:20Short coming inside McKinney. Good touch by Kane to drag it away from Tyler Adams.
16:50Declan Rice frustrated that there weren't too many options available to him.
16:57That's a great example of how well organized this USA team is. They beat the press
17:02England and all of a sudden all the blue shirts are back in position.
17:09A huge amount of communication going on between the different lines of defense and midfield.
17:15So how do you solve that problem?
17:21You need someone to break the line. You need someone to beat someone.
17:25Every now and again England showed a little passage of play. The runner beyond and they
17:29played a little one-two and got in. But there's not been enough of it. Stones.
17:37Kane trying to hold it up and do so. The second ball being won by the USA on many occasions.
17:44Penalized for coming in from behind. It might just be a case of getting one of those players like a
17:50Grealish or a Foden who's going to draw players towards him because of his ability on the ball.
17:55Just to free up a bit of space for somebody else. The US playing well.
18:01They are a side that have been on an upward trajectory. When we were speaking to Greg
18:06Berhalter before the tournament he was keen to point out that this competition would give them
18:11a real measure of their progress. They won the gold cup last summer by winning five of their six
18:16games 1-0. Beating a position like Haiti, Canada, Jamaica, Qatar and Mexico to lift the trophy.
18:26And even from that team it's a very different USA 11 that has started this tournament.
18:33Do you imagine four years development on this group now that we see in the 11th?
18:43It's going to be a force.
18:49Shorty and Rink will be around in four years. Here is
18:52Ware looking for Looser. Interception from Bellingham.
18:57That is a very good point.
19:14Dest.
19:19A little bit of a problem with Mount and Sterling.
19:22It's just interesting to see when they have the ball and the positions that McKinney takes up.
19:28He'll drift infield. He'll be part of the three-man midfield. Sometimes he'll be
19:33touching the touchline on this near side. Now he's scampering forward into a center forward position.
19:43Pulisic.
19:45Pulisic going for goal. He'll take a little nick on the way through and he's going to be another
19:49USA corner. Jordan Pickford is furious. Absolutely furious.
20:01Listen to that roar that you can hear. Coming from the USA supporters.
20:07The captain America Shields being shaken at Christian Pulisic. He is no longer the
20:19man who wears the armband.
20:25He is their most creative player and he almost kicked out Zimmerman.
20:30It's a really good delivery and Harry Maguire had to be his most alert. John Stones and Maguire
20:34now having an inquest. Krippi has come across too. This has put the ball into an empty net.
20:41That's what he's there for but thankfully seeing a little bit of danger behind him.
20:46Got the flight of the ball. Zimmerman just steaming in. Free header.
20:56Good defending in the end. That's a bit.
20:59You just can't stop looking down seeing what subs are warming up saying all right come on
21:04come on Gareth let's change it. Grealish, Walker, Henderson, Wilson and Rashford are all down there.
21:14Here come the United States again and again they win another corner. It's their fourth of the evening.
21:21It's their fourth of the evening.
21:33I think they like him.
21:51And towards that near close again Harry Maguire has to come to the rescue.
22:01Tulisi, Kane, another corner.
22:11England have their backs against the wall. Harry Maguire has had to clear at least four corners.
22:17And we've only reached the hour mark and it's those USA supporters
22:22and a feeling as if their team are the most likely to make the breakthrough.
22:32Another delivery into the centre of the goal. Another Harry Maguire header.
22:37Ream keeps it alive. Pulisic in a bit of space. Pulisic trying to take on Harry Kane back defending.
22:47And now trying to escape up the field. Something that's not going to happen because
22:51he was never going to get away.
23:02Those England fans behind the goal away to our left are wrapped with a bit of tension.
23:08Five corners Harry Kane's nodded at me. It is his job though to be fair.
23:14He's on overtime at the moment.
23:18Maguire don't give Kane all the credit.
23:34Too many Harrys.
23:37Dest.
23:48Wandering too far. Pulisic. England got close to him, almost squirted through to right.
23:54Trippier across.
23:57And that pin lies for his foul on Tyner Adams.
24:01Rick Berhalter straight out to snap the hands of his captain.
24:09There may be a substitution not only to try and go and win the game at the other end
24:15but also change the flow, change the energy levels because the USA are on top.
24:27And they believe it too.
24:33England are struggling to get out of their own half.
24:37Steve Holland and Gareth Southgate are deep in conversation right on the edge of the technical area.
24:49Moussa.
24:52His right being shackled by stones. Another corner is given.
24:58You get the feeling that eventually they'll make one of them work.
25:02Harry Maguire wipes his forehead.
25:06Sweeps his hair to one side because he knows what's coming in here.
25:14A conspiratorial group on the edge of the England D just plotting
25:21trying to find a way to make the breakthrough for the USA.
25:31Zimmerman and Ream are a real danger.
25:35It's aimed in towards the back post and Jordan Pickford didn't get near it.
25:38Zimmerman was coming but not quick enough and there might have been a little touch.
25:42A difficult one for him because he's not too sure.
25:46He hasn't got time to look over his shoulder to see if there's anybody behind him.
25:51A little bit underneath it. Zimmerman wasn't going to get there but he's not to know that.
25:59And the pressure is building.
26:01And Kudosik has just gone over and tried to stir him up on this side as well.
26:08This could have been a better scenario.
26:17Sterling.
26:21That's getting a little bit too handsy with the Chelsea winger.
26:25Jordan Henderson just taking his bib off.
26:32Suggests they're trying to hold the foot a little bit more.
26:39The other thing about Jordan Henderson is he's a senior pro, isn't he?
26:44Someone who's going to get into those around him and try and lift the group.
26:51He's not going to be able to do that.
27:18Shaw.
27:21Grealish getting readied as well.
27:31Bellingham.
27:32He's going to steer it back towards Harry Kane who had drifted into the box but wasn't set for it.
27:39He's got it back again.
27:41But Kai Usaka, no one in the box who can hold the end of that.
27:45That's a bit close to Matt Turner anyway.
27:48It came in really quickly.
27:49Raheem Sterling maybe on this left-hand side can go in towards the six-yard box.
27:56A bit of a surprise, England getting the ball into the box.
27:59You haven't done that for a while.
28:03Henderson's ready.
28:04Grealish is just getting his England top on.
28:18Robinson.
28:19Dealt with that really well.
28:36Wang.
28:48Nice strategy to clear under a little bit of pressure but there's no out-ball for England.
29:01England have won eight of their eleven meetings with the USA.
29:08The last defeat against them came in June 1993.
29:13I don't know what you're talking about.
29:22They were very proud of that one.
29:38Big changes for England.
29:39Raheem Sterling.
29:42Raheem Sterling is being replaced by Jack Grealish.
29:46Jude Bellingham is being switched out for Jordan Henderson.
29:50The first two changes that Gareth Southgate is making.
29:55What difference is it going to make?
29:56I think certainly midfield, I think Bellingham's been chasing shadows most of the night.
30:02So good rest for him.
30:03I think we know what Jordan Henderson gives you.
30:06Gives you that stability in midfield.
30:09And it was either Foden or Grealish to come on.
30:12One of those line breakers who can just shake this
30:17USA back four up a little bit.
30:20Beat a player, create something.
30:22Because at the moment they're not creating an awful lot.
30:25Harry Kane has had more touches in the England box than he has in the USA's box so far tonight.
30:32They need to find a solution to that problem.
30:35Henderson giving the world a mount as he came on.
30:38Here is Shaw.
30:39It's best for Grealish on the left hand side but his delivery was aimed towards Kane.
30:44Henderson trying to keep England on the front foot here.
30:49Liverpool now.
30:51Trying to steer it out to Trippier.
30:57Saka.
30:58Kane.
30:59Needs a runner beyond him.
31:02Squeeze it past Moussa.
31:04Pulisic.
31:09That's what England have got to do. Engage higher up the pitch.
31:11Already you can see a difference.
31:16Two or three minutes.
31:17They've had a couple of opportunities to put the ball wide.
31:19Get the ball near to the box.
31:20They haven't done that at all in this second half.
31:32Grealish.
31:35Still going Grealish.
31:36It's good feet from him.
31:39Almost turning the USA into making a tackle.
31:44Still going Grealish.
31:45It's good feet from him.
31:48Almost turning the USA into making a tackle.
32:04All right.
32:05That's been on Maguire.
32:06Maguire has been penalised for being a little bit too physical.
32:10In that first run from Grealish,
32:12those four USA players got drawn towards him to try and stop him
32:16once he got into the box.
32:18A little flip of the ball inside to someone there.
32:23Already he's created a little bit of danger in that back line.
32:40Adams down to Dest.
32:43Not trying to get back at him.
32:46Shorty managed to engage.
32:52It's an England ball.
33:10So back to 1993.
33:14I thought I was going to get away with it.
33:16What happened?
33:17England lost and you were in the starting line.
33:19Do you remember that?
33:22Yes.
33:24It was the game that took place in the US Cup.
33:28It was the Nadir of the Graham Taylor.
33:31Do you remember that?
33:32Yes.
33:35Is there a point to this or is it just humiliation time?
33:39No, I was just going to ask you whether or not
33:41that was the point that you thought that the USA
33:44started to become a bit more of a force on the world stage
33:48because things changed after that, didn't they?
33:50They had the USA World Cup.
33:51The MLS started to kick into gear.
33:53I didn't think that at the time, no.
33:55I just thought it may be my last time I play for England.
33:57How about that?
33:58It wasn't, though, was it?
33:59You went on to have a very successful English career.
34:01Sneaked a few more caps.
34:02You weren't the only one in that team.
34:04Remember there was the likes of
34:07Alton Palmer, Lee Sharp, Gary Pallister, David Batty.
34:10All of them, I don't think, ever really lived it down.
34:15It was a bad day for England.
34:18A bad day against the USA.
34:21And there was one in 1950 as well.
34:23I didn't play in that one.
34:24No, you didn't.
34:28The World Cup of 1950 in Brazil.
34:33England went out.
34:37It was one of the biggest shocks of all time.
34:39Both, actually, the USA and England went out
34:41in that World Cup in the group stages.
34:51Here's an example of them being a thorn in their side
34:54constantly at these tournaments.
34:56Here is Grealish into Kane.
34:58Can they reverse that?
35:06On to Grealish again.
35:36A few signs from the bench just calm it down.
36:02Don't need to force it.
36:04Get the ball out here to Grealish.
36:07Paul Saka on the other side.
36:20McKinney.
36:28This is Grealish.
36:37Mount.
36:50Good switch out towards that far side.
36:53This is Trippier.
37:07Grealish.
37:24Pretty natural to want England to win the game.
37:26But you just make sure you do not lose the game.
37:31Saka.
37:33On to Trippier.
37:37Now Saka again.
37:40Too much to aim at in the centre.
37:41Henderson giving it to him.
37:43He couldn't keep hold of it once again.
37:48Mount.
37:49Kane.
37:51Still going Kane.
37:52On to Saka.
37:53Couldn't get it under control.
37:54And then it bobbled off him after an attempted clearance.
37:57But I think the offside flag was going to go up anyway.
38:07Change coming for
38:09the United States of America.
38:10Brendan Aronson
38:12is about to come on.
38:15Didn't start against Wales either.
38:18Nor did Marcus Rashford.
38:19But he too is about to enter the fray.
38:25First change is Winston McKinney who
38:29was a slight doubt for this game.
38:32Picked up a knock in that Wales game.
38:35The problem for England is that Brendan Aronson is very dynamic
38:46with Fielder who will get up and down.
38:50Obviously Greg Bernhardt wants to win the game.
38:54He is.
38:55And he will link up with Adams, his team mate at Leeds.
39:01He's a firecracker.
39:03He's a firecracker.
39:08Dest is being replaced.
39:09Had a bit of trouble on this near touchline.
39:14And a surprise inclusion
39:18into the USA squad.
39:19Shaq Moore of Nashville who was in Spain in the last three seasons
39:22before signing back to the MLS.
39:26He's obviously unhappy about being replaced.
39:28Serginio Dest.
39:30Bakayu Saka is off.
39:31And on comes Marcus Rashford.
39:34Trying to influence proceedings from the right hand side
39:36as he did when he came off the bench the other day.
39:43Scored the third fastest goal by a World Cup substitute on Monday.
39:4649 seconds after coming off the bench.
39:50Bet that will be nice.
39:57You've won the double.
39:59You've won trophies with Arsenal.
40:00You've been in teams where patience has been keyed.
40:03As a senior player in this group,
40:04what would you be trying to say to some of the younger members
40:08of the team now?
40:09Just keep playing.
40:10Keep doing your job.
40:12Do not give anything away.
40:13You do not lose this game.
40:15And we'll get a chance before the end of the game.
40:22Pulisic.
40:24The intervention by Declan Rice was imperative
40:28for that move to break down.
40:54There's only 10 minutes to go.
41:03Need a little bit of leadership out on the pitch.
41:07But it's not a goal.
41:09It's a goal.
41:12And it's a goal.
41:14It's a goal.
41:15It's a goal.
41:17It's a goal.
41:19It's a goal.
41:20It's a goal.
41:21It's a goal.
41:22It's a goal.
41:24Yes!
41:28There are a lot of senior players out there when you think about it.
41:31Obviously Sterling's gone off.
41:33McGuire, Stones, Shaw's been there.
41:39Reasonable amount of time now.
41:40Henderson.
41:43Mount.
41:51That's a good ball out on this near side.
41:54That's a come across.
41:56Harry Maguire.
41:58He's holding something.
41:59Reaching down on the top of that.
42:03Lower back.
42:04Top of his thigh.
42:08A legitimate kick.
42:24It's good from Kane.
42:26Declan Rice.
42:27Grealish.
42:28Rice wants it back again.
42:29The ball wasn't right from Jack Grealish.
42:53Mount.
42:54Allowed to wander.
42:56To Kane.
42:57Needs a little bit of support.
42:59Trippier joining now.
43:00Rashford's made a dart into the box.
43:02It's Henderson.
43:03It's not a great delivery.
43:05Matt Turner is on the new thing.
43:07He's been good.
43:08Turner with the crosses the whole game.
43:10And he didn't, with any high on, he's just come out of his goal.
43:16Henderson does normally whip a brilliant ball from that angle.
43:19But he just got underneath that one.
43:21Matt Turner has played for Arsenal four times now.
43:24And he's only conceded once.
43:26That was a penalty.
43:36Moore.
43:52Two more changes for the USA.
44:00Tim Wehr.
44:01Is going to be replaced by Gio Reyna.
44:05Son of a former world footballer of the year.
44:07George Wehr.
44:08The president now of Liberia.
44:13Replaced by.
44:14Tim Wehr.
44:15The president now of Liberia.
44:17Replaced by.
44:19A man born in Sunderland.
44:23Gio Reyna.
44:25Who could have played for England by birthright.
44:29But was never really going to.
44:30He is the son of Claudio Reyna.
44:32He used to play for Rangers.
44:34In Manchester City.
44:36A roaring back from injury to play.
44:39His mom was also a famous USA.
44:42International.
44:43You saw a shot of his dad.
44:53Sergeant is also on.
44:55For Haji right.
44:58Sergeant having a good season with Norwich City.
45:02In the championship.
45:14It's been a pressing from England.
45:15But it's been beaten by.
45:17The USA.
45:19It was a nearly press.
45:20Just off it again.
45:21That's why they put out so easy.
45:39British has won a foul.
45:40And England.
45:42As a result.
45:43We'll have a set piece in a dangerous area.
45:44What would you do here?
45:47Stick it in the mixer.
45:49Fox.
45:50It's got to that level.
45:51As it McGuire's.
45:52Just one.
45:53Six corners.
45:54At the other end.
45:55On his own.
45:57So he wins number seven.
45:59Is a feature of England's play.
46:01They haven't really maximized in.
46:03This evening's game.
46:10So.
46:27Anything towards.
46:29Dealt with.
46:30By Tim Ray.
46:34Himself is.
46:35Had a bit of a resurgence.
46:36After.
46:37being one of those players who seems to play well in the championship it never
46:40gets an opportunity or gets pushed out of the team when they get to the Premier
46:47League he's has performed much better this year under Marco Silva and he's
46:52played a lot of games everyone for Fulham this Premier League season I saw
46:57him the other week against United and he was fantastic looked at home really
47:02confident we lost the game well that was an e-spot
47:10you mentioned it earlier I suppose the key thing here is that you don't lose
47:13this game absolutely you take the point if that's the case
47:17you get four of two games
47:28there was a bit of a reaction when England drew nil-nil with Scotland in
47:31the second game in the Euros remember that look what happened next that it's
47:37not worth getting that pessimistic is it we have to remember that if you get a
47:40point you stop in the opposition game getting three so based on the fact where
47:45the USA find themselves they want to win this game
48:01group stages often racked with tension for England managers they rarely glide
48:06serenely through back eight years 2014 before a ball was kicked in the third
48:12game England were already out
48:16in South Africa they weren't perfect at Euro 2016 or 2012 it's only latterly
48:21that things have been a little bit easier for them
48:26okay
48:30we're trying to tiptoe his way into a dangerous area
48:36greelish back to Rashford again trying to bend it towards the far corner but
48:42it's very close to Matt Turner no real trouble for the American goalkeeper you
48:49can see what he's trying to do with overlap from sure just to create a space
48:53for himself to put it on that right foot couldn't quite get the bend on it
48:58good to have Marcus Rashford back in the England fold after such a long time out
49:02yeah really good concentrating on his football the real assets got that pace
49:10and when he's hungry and he's playing well one of England's top strikers
49:17Southgate went to visit him in the summer to his house to have a two-hour
49:23meeting clear the air and find out exactly what the problems were with
49:28Marcus Rashford for a long time he was not really joining up with England even
49:35before the European Championships
49:42Rainer
49:46quite brings it out looking for a counter-attack but there
49:51wasn't really a threat on this side he's not going to outpace Zimmerman
50:11luckily Mason Mound run 50 yards in that press
50:17here's Josh Sargent into Pulisic
50:23danger signs flashing for England once again
50:27trying to pick out Rainer who just drifted back from the penalty spot
50:31he's got another in first time the space was there for him just to whip it right
50:36along the six-yard box by taking a talk to closed all the space down
50:47there is a little bit of good news because if it stays like this then
50:53England will qualify if they avoid a four-goal defeat against Wales
50:59England could lose five-nil to Wales and still qualify for a run in the USA draw
51:06that is good news
51:10it doesn't cover up the poor performance tonight though we've got to take it into
51:15context got to play better moving forward they indeed do go through
51:23second-best all over the pitch with and without the ball
51:39Jordan Henderson has won a free kick
51:46the problem here Lee is also has an impact on squad management doesn't it
51:54having the one this game Gareth Southgate could rotate his cast they've
51:58taken a free kick quickly and it's dealt with by Moore and they've won a corner kick
52:04right at the end of the day we're into stoppage time of which there
52:08will be just four added minutes
52:13all will be forgotten and forgiven if this creates an opportunity for England
52:20here in Trippier just trying to engender the support of the crowd behind the goal
52:26he wants to suck the ball into the net they've committed a lot of men forward
52:34I've got a feeling
52:42I said you're right
52:45aiming towards McGuire heads it down and didn't get enough purchase on that
52:51header not so well at the other end with his defending of set-pieces
52:57that's the guy in front of the goalkeeper as you're eating right when
53:02you need him
53:07it's getting ready to analyze what has been a rather drab England performance
53:12in large parts
53:27that's given away cheaply and Grealish is on the run now Adams has come out to
53:34engage he's been terrific for the USA tonight that's a push in the back that
53:38was unnecessary
53:41the Moosa has conceded a free kick in a dangerous area here
53:57Oh
54:19so looks you're taking charge creator of Jude Bellingham's goal on Monday in the
54:25Al-Khalifa Stadium
54:28perfect pinpoint delivery is required
54:34good time to school
54:37Oh
54:46sure and it's a world's hurricane he got up there and he got so very very close
54:55to piercing the matter the net
55:00well he did everything it's a little bit low down he's just dipped his head try
55:05get something on it to come right off the top of his head
55:11great bowling from short
55:22that was a cracking chance the best chance I think that England are
55:26fashioned
55:30there haven't been too many three attempts on target all night for England
55:36most of them Matt Turner has been equal to
55:46everybody who's attended the stadium was expecting a little bit more than this
55:53tonight Lee they've managed the game really well I think the USA themselves
55:58out the other night but there'd be more control tonight maybe because the plane
56:03against better players so they had to be midfield free and the front three
56:10they're closing down and discipline has been fantastic that line has done a good
56:15job as well and the chance now maybe to make all three points
56:21realistic down the side for Gio Reyna that free kick sir I'll just take the
56:27point one put it into the net into the box and there is the point a point for
56:34the USA I don't think it was the greatest entertainment the supporters
56:40inside the stadium certainly voicing their concerns the performance from
56:45England will just temper the optimism that followed Monday's rampant display
56:50against Iran certainly this point is better for England than it is for the
56:55u.s. but the confident mood that built up in dispatching Iran may well have been
57:02punctured after tonight Christian Pulisic did well old friends reunited
57:07and the USA can add 2022 to their list of World Cup moments from 1950 and 2010
57:14in which they have caused England significant problems it is disappointing
57:20but it's not defining but it gives the USA a great chance when they play around
57:27next week it's finished at Alba England nil USA nil
57:38that goal of straw means that come Tuesday in the last set of matches all
57:42four teams can still qualify for the knockout stages and England still can't
57:48beat the USA at the World Cup a fifth goal of straw here in Qatar we'll get
57:53the thoughts of Ian Wright of Gary Neville and of Roy Keane on this goal of
57:58straw when we come back in a couple of moments
