00:00:00So we're going to have a closing ceremony in a few moments time. We're in that gap on
00:00:10the right hand side of your screen and actually just as you come in through there, on the
00:00:14left and the right, it has all the winners from the 1936 Olympics. It's an absolute piece
00:00:19of history to see Jesse Owen's name up there and his four gold medals in front of Adolf
00:00:24Hitler in 1936. You really do feel the resonance in this place and of course we're England's
00:00:29men to win their first trophy for 58 years. That would be from a football perspective
00:00:33extremely historical moment. Let's talk about Phil Foden. Probably the first half of the
00:00:38semi-final was his best half, wasn't it? Yeah, I think so. Do you know what? The way I look
00:00:42at it, he looked like he was playing for Man City. He had that bit of freedom, obviously
00:00:45he was busy, he was getting in the pockets, he was affecting the game. And we're on about
00:00:50right early, maybe not having the tournament we expected, but he's still giving these lads
00:00:53the freedom to go and play. And if Foden gets in them pockets and he gets time on the ball,
00:00:57he will hurt you. As simple as that. They will be worried about Phil Foden, absolutely.
00:01:01I remember the chance what he had, what hit the post. If he can come across and get involved
00:01:07on the right side like he did with Saks, obviously he could come in on that left side. It's going
00:01:11to be very, very difficult to stop. They know him as well. Rodri will know that he's capable
00:01:14of this. They probably won't give him the space the Dutch gave him. That's the reality,
00:01:17isn't it? Because in that first half it was extraordinary how much space the Dutch were
00:01:20giving him. No, and they tightened it up at half time, obviously, but he was outstanding
00:01:24in that first half. And credit to Gareth because there were points in this tournament where
00:01:27we were even questioning him and thinking, you know, do we need to make changes? Should
00:01:31Cole Palmer come in? Should Phil Foden be left on the bench? But I think we all recognise
00:01:35what a special player we have. And you know, we shouldn't kind of forget, Foden, he's pretty
00:01:39young himself. I know he's got vast experience. He won some big trophies, Pacific International
00:01:43Football. He's taken that leadership. You don't know what Man City are in this season.
00:01:47De Bruyne was missing in Haarlem. He seemed to enjoy that. And he looked like he's done
00:01:50that over the last few games for England. You know what, Adwoa, you can't take out Corey
00:01:54Maynew in all this in respect of getting Jude Bellingham going and getting Foden going.
00:01:58You can see the freedom because when he gets on the ball, Kobe, he wants to look for you
00:02:02in there. And once you get in there with Phil Foden on that half time, you're going to cause
00:02:05anybody problems. It's also like at club level, he sort of plays second fiddle to De Bruyne
00:02:10a little bit. And then he's coming here and obviously he should be England's top player.
00:02:13And then Bellingham, obviously, in the last six months, 12 months, has just emerged into
00:02:16a real star. It's almost as if he has to sort of earn our respect every single time. But
00:02:22he's world-class Foden. He's one of the very best. He played every team in the world. And
00:02:26right, he's mentioned Maynew. The biggest compliment we can give him, we don't even
00:02:28speak about him. We just take it for granted. And again, tonight, that he will turn up and
00:02:33do the business. And that's a huge compliment to him.
00:02:35First time ever, two teenagers have started a Euro or World Final in Maynew. And Jamal,
00:02:40listen, we've hardly even talked about Harry Kay. The closing ceremony is about to start.
00:02:44If for whatever reason he's not at 100%, and it doesn't matter what that reason might be,
00:02:48it doesn't look like it, would you be saying to him, look, just stay between the width
00:02:52of the post, stop dropping into midfield where maybe you're taking other people's oxygen
00:02:57and you're, in a way, slightly getting in their way?
00:02:59But ideally, we just want Harry to be where we know that if he gets up a chance, he's
00:03:03going to be there. So goal hang?
00:03:04Absolutely. Stay in and around there because we've got players who maybe could come into
00:03:07those holes. Harry, stay in there because that's where we need you to be.
00:03:09Is that music? I mean, seriously, as a striker, is that not music to your ears? Going goal
00:03:13hang? Of course, yeah, because you just stay up
00:03:15there and we'll try and get the ball to you because we've got players who can. And we
00:03:18know that Harry can't finish. Why have we all of a sudden decided that we
00:03:21need to tell Harry Kane how to play centre forward? This tournament has been staggering
00:03:25to me because he's been dropping in for five, six years for Spurs, doing exactly the things
00:03:30that he's been doing this tournament. He doesn't look right physically. That's what I would
00:03:32say. But I think he knows how to play the game. He's the very best striker we've ever
00:03:36had. Yeah, I think he's got an idea. Yeah, I think
00:03:38he knows where the back of the net is. So why does it feel like he's now clogging
00:03:41up midfield in a way that he didn't before? I think when he's dropping, if you look at
00:03:44the final to go all against Stitley, he dropped deep then. But I think when he's been dropping
00:03:48deep, not his position sense, he just looks a little bit sluggish. I think that's more
00:03:52of a criticism, not his position sense because he knows the game as well as anybody.
00:03:56Or people aren't making the runs off the back of the net.
00:03:58But when he's that deep, he just looks sluggish, Nestle, when he's turning sharp. He just needs
00:04:01to be a bit sharper with his distribution. I think his position sense, I think he's been
00:04:05doing that the last few years. It's just his sharpness doesn't look quite there.
00:04:09Harry's still, he's in the running for the Golden Boot.
00:04:12Imagine Gareth speaking to his staff about Kane and selection. You can talk all you want,
00:04:17straight away you're going, he's starting. He's scoring. I think in the next couple of
00:04:22weeks it'll emerge, maybe even quicker than that, that he's been sort of patching himself
00:04:25up to get out there on the pitch. That ordinarily happens. He doesn't look right and it's something
00:04:29to do with his physicality. It's nothing to do with the way in which he understands the game.
00:04:32So who is it who needs to make the run? If that is happening then and he's dropping in
00:04:35and when he's at his best, he does that for England or previously for Tottenham or Bayern.
00:04:39Who is it that should be making those runs off the back of him?
00:04:42If he comes in deep, you probably want Jude Bellingham going through, you probably want
00:04:45Saka going along there. That's not Phil Foden's game to go long like that. But if he's dropping
00:04:50then somebody's got to be going. Maybe that's Jude, maybe Saka.
00:04:54I think Shaw could do that as well from the left position. If he's fitting up, he can
00:04:57make great runs on that left side. I think if England win today, will they be really
00:05:01concerned about what his position sense was? He has a chance of winning the Golden Boot,
00:05:05he's sitting with a chance of that. Sometimes I say, listen, let him go. Just be a bit sharper.
00:05:10Roy, they won't be concerned about anything if England win. They couldn't care less how
00:05:14England win. Absolutely, they could. And of course, because of what Ollie Watkins did
00:05:18the other night and because of what we know Ivan Toni brings physically, again, that word
00:05:22option scares Southgate Scotland.
00:05:24Well, keep talking about it. It's obviously got England to this stage. The players off
00:05:27the bench come in and produce big moments. And don't be surprised tonight if it's going
00:05:30to be tight. You would imagine extra time, penalties. These players on the bench, the
00:05:35beauty for Gareth, he knows they're ready. But then again, the Spanish players have come
00:05:39off the bench and had an influence. Absolutely.
00:05:41Do you anticipate, certainly the first half, quite a nutritional first 45 minutes, not
00:05:46much being given away? We've talked about it before, England trying to nullify Spain's
00:05:51midfield as much as possible.
00:05:52Obviously, we're going to have to try and do that. But what I'd like to see, especially
00:05:55with Luke Shaw in the team now with that left side getting activated, I'd like to see us
00:05:58have a go at them as well, because let's not think that the Spanish will not be afraid
00:06:02of what we're capable of doing as well. So I'd like to see us making them see that we
00:06:06are capable of opening you up and finishing.
00:06:09And that's clear, you have to be ready for anything. You know, you could be a goal down
00:06:12after a minute, you could be a goal up, you could have a send it off. Be ready, be ready
00:06:16to start quickly if you can, because it's hard to get going.
00:06:18There's three quarters of this team and the coaching staff who were there when we obviously
00:06:23lost three years ago. They've had three years to contemplate what may have gone wrong in
00:06:27that time, what could they do better? They did sit back after we went up in that first
00:06:31ten, fifteen minutes. They can't afford to do that again. They will be pushed back at
00:06:34times, but they've got to keep punching throughout the game.
00:06:37They will have to survive for long spells tonight, but what they've shown, when they
00:06:41do hang in there, they can still produce.
00:06:43We've got match winners.
00:06:44I know there are times when people like me are going to interviews with you, Roy, and
00:06:47I say, oh, you lost last week. How more determined are you to win this week? And there are times
00:06:52I must think that you want to say, you can't be any more determined than determined. You
00:06:55know what I mean? They can't be any more determined to win tonight than they were at Wembley because
00:06:59they so wanted to win at Wembley.
00:07:00And that would be for the same group of players. I never believe at this level another team
00:07:05wants it more than the other. Spanish players will be desperate to win something just as
00:07:09much as English players. They're aware of their history in the stadium. We've mentioned
00:07:12it all along. They have their chance to win tonight and create their own history. That's
00:07:16what the game's about.
00:07:17Spain have won three European championships. Nobody has won four. So as Roy says, from
00:07:23a Spanish point of view, this championship was first played in 1960. History beckons
00:07:27for them. And they had the big drought between 1964, when they won the Euros, and 2008, when
00:07:32they won in Vienna. They won nothing in between that. Then they had their golden period, 208,
00:07:37210, 212. So they've been down this road before as well, as we said, to Gaisque Bendieta.
00:07:42And in a way, I wonder if whether you, as Spain, could play on that from the England
00:07:46point of view. If you're a Spanish player, they'll be so desperate to win a little bit
00:07:50of tension because they want it so badly.
00:07:53Oh, they will want it so badly.
00:07:55Can the Spanish players play on that from the English point of view?
00:07:58Oh, yeah. I mean, just generally, the Spanish players have always been more relaxed on the
00:08:01ball than English players. When I first started playing for England, the Spanish team weren't
00:08:05the best. But all of a sudden, they emerged into a wonderful team, one of the very best
00:08:09we've ever seen. And tonight, this team will be so confident. Yeah, we're confident, but
00:08:13they will be very confident as well.
00:08:15I agree with that, Gael, because they know what they're capable of doing. But like I
00:08:18say, we have to be confident in what we're doing. We've had players, seven players now
00:08:22in this team who have walked past that trophy. They know what that feels like. So that is
00:08:27what is going to drive them on. They know how to get it. They hopefully know how to
00:08:30get it done now because they don't want that feeling.
00:08:32Fine details in it.
00:08:33Yeah.
00:08:34I think they'll probably decide tonight's game.
00:08:36And Mark, no England team ever lost in a tournament through lack of effort. It was always through
00:08:40know-how. It was always through quality, technical ability, understanding the game, staying in
00:08:44the game. That's where we fell short. So these lads tonight are not just going to have to
00:08:48work hard. They're going to do that. We know that. They're going to give everything and
00:08:51give it their all. But they're just going to have to show that little bit of tournament
00:08:53sort of know-how that the show didn't pass this tournament so far.
00:08:56Yes.
00:08:57The key is when you're playing against the top teams like the Spanish or even a club
00:09:00of football and you're staying in the game and you're fighting and you're out of possession,
00:09:03the key is though when you do get the ball back, you've got to do something with it.
00:09:06You can't just keep giving away cheap because obviously you'd be tired mentally and physically.
00:09:10England have got to produce that little bit of quality and possession.
00:09:13We've got to do something. Go on, Gael.
00:09:15The Spanish teams always have the habit of finding the spare player on the pitch wherever
00:09:19it is. And that's what we've just got to make sure that they don't do that too often because
00:09:22we could be chasing the ball around quite a bit.
00:09:24But I think what I've read is that like half of the chances that they can see this down
00:09:28that Carrera side. I'm hoping that Saka can really go at him tonight and really cause
00:09:32them problems.
00:09:33Well, England have never lost in Berlin. Don't know whether you knew that. Obviously, most
00:09:36of the time playing Germany or West Germany. You were here. You were part of a Roy Hodgson
00:09:38team, which won here.
00:09:39I know. I'd forgotten about that.
00:09:40You've forgotten the win here, Gary.
00:09:42I know. We came back from 2-0 down. It was an amazing night. But look at Harry Kane's
00:09:46eyes there. I mean, seriously, those lads. I get quite emotional when I think about the
00:09:51fact of what they've achieved in this last sort of three or four tournaments and what
00:09:54they're about to embark upon. Good luck to them because, honestly, everybody is behind
00:09:58them in our country.
00:10:01The great Giorgio Chiellini. And he was a great, magnificent defender. Do you remember
00:10:05the pitch when he hauled Saka?
00:10:07He was so great then.
00:10:08Well, but it was hausery, as we say these days. Of the highest order. Fabulous player.
00:10:14Just retired. Captain of Italy three years ago. Look how well he looks at smiling and
00:10:18enjoying his retirement as well. And just seeing those England players in the tunnel.
00:10:23It is the truth, Ian, that if they win, we can say now, they have no idea what will be
00:10:28unleashed in terms of excitement back home.
00:10:30It is something that we're all looking forward to. We saw when the ladies won how happy we
00:10:34were as a country for that. And we've seen, when we've gone close, how much it brings
00:10:38everybody together. So fingers crossed for the boys.
00:10:41Here we go then. That's the Henri De Launay Trophy itself, inaugurated in 1960. Here we
00:10:45are then, England against Spain. Enjoy it with us. And in the company of Lee Dixon,
00:10:50Ali McQuiston, first, a very good evening to Sam Matafas.
00:10:56Thank you, Mark. Very good evening, everyone. Giorgio Chiellini picking up that trophy three
00:11:01years ago might be the reason Gareth Southgate says he doesn't believe in fairy tales. But
00:11:09he does believe in dreams. And despite setback and adversity, he has given the whole country
00:11:16the belief that dreams can come true. Faith may have wavered, but after stoppage time,
00:11:23bicycle kicks, penalty precision and last-minute winners, the hearts of a nation have raced,
00:11:29stopped and fluttered. And every one of them has been captured again now.
00:11:37This is another first, the first final of Foreign Grass. Another milestone for a team
00:11:42who have continually broken new ground. The next step is the hardest one to take.
00:11:49Here are the national anthems of England and Spain.
00:12:06Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
00:12:13What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
00:12:20Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
00:12:27O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
00:12:34And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
00:12:41Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
00:12:48Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
00:12:55O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
00:13:04Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
00:13:14O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
00:13:34Challenges are there to be risen to. The greatest do that.
00:13:53England have never lost in Berlin. It is their seventh ever game in the German capital
00:13:59and they have won four of their previous six.
00:14:03And tonight they are backed by one hell of a crowd.
00:14:07There was a Dutch invasion in Dortmund,
00:14:10but it's certainly an English-dominated Olympic stadium.
00:14:14But they face an inventive Spain side.
00:14:16Laminia Mouw, 17 yesterday. Danny Olmo scored three times and assisted twice.
00:14:21Rodri, the best in his position. He was born on the day England beat Spain at Euro 96.
00:14:26What stands out for you, Ali McCoys?
00:14:28Well, I'll tell you where we are. The group stages, I thought, were average, guys.
00:14:32I thought the last 16 were a bit better. Quarter-finals good, semi-finals excellent.
00:14:36Where I am right now, I think we've got the best team in the tournament
00:14:39versus the most resilient team. Let the show begin.
00:14:48Well, he gave that semi-final winner the Royal Seal of Approval
00:14:53and His Royal Highness Prince William and Prince George here tonight
00:14:58to watch England make one change from Trippier out, Shaw in.
00:15:04The first time he has begun a game since February.
00:15:07It means seven of England starting 11 are playing in a second Euros final.
00:15:11Foden missed out the last time with injury. Will he be key today, Lee Dixon?
00:15:15Yeah, he's always key and the formation will probably be the same with the ball.
00:15:19Shaw on that left-hand side, Sakharov without the ball might be slightly different.
00:15:23He might go to a back four and enable Shaw to pick up Yamal and Walker to pick up Williams.
00:15:32Well, seven years ago, England beat Spain in the Under-17 World Cup final.
00:15:37Phil Foden and Mark Gahey on the score sheet.
00:15:40Conor Gallagher was on the bench that night.
00:15:42Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon were in the 21s a year ago
00:15:48when they beat Spain in the final of the Under-21 European Championship.
00:15:52It has now become a habit to go deep into tournaments for England teams,
00:15:57men's and women's. The Lionesses winning two years ago.
00:16:01The hope is that those victories have laid the ground
00:16:05to help Gareth Southgate's men take the ultimate glory.
00:16:14England have emerged from the gloom of a penalty shootout defeat three years ago
00:16:19to contest a second successive Euros final.
00:16:26It has been 58 years since Sir Ralph Ramsey guided England to tournament success.
00:16:31Imagine the wonder and the excitement if they grasp the moment.
00:16:37Spain are terrific. There are plenty who think they should be favourites,
00:16:41but England winning might just be the fairytale ending
00:16:44that for most of the last four weeks no one saw coming.
00:16:59It is the team of the tournament against the tournament team
00:17:03for the right to be called the European champion.
00:17:08Ali McCoy and Lee Dixon are here.
00:17:11We've got nerves, everyone at home's got nerves.
00:17:14How do England control theirs? Because Spain are fast starters.
00:17:17They are, we know how fast they are, especially on the wings.
00:17:21This atmosphere is brilliant.
00:17:24What it will look like in the early stages is that Shaw will have a night
00:17:29to remember for all sorts of reasons.
00:17:32He's going across Yamal, we know, and they haven't got the ball
00:17:35but going forward he's got a huge amount of responsibility
00:17:39just to go down that left-hand side which enables Foden and Bellingham
00:17:44to play in those number 10 areas where England were so good in the last game.
00:17:48So he's got a big night ahead of him, there's no doubt about that.
00:17:54The first thing I would say, looking out there when Seaman was going to take
00:17:58that goal kick, England actually went man for man at the back gate
00:18:03went out in the left-back position, Walker went in the right position
00:18:06and Shaw pushed Fowler, so it looks as though they're going to be
00:18:09very confident and take responsibility in picking up the men
00:18:13and sometimes go man for man, which is a very positive
00:18:18but equally dangerous thing to do.
00:18:25It's been a tournament that has seen fewer goals and a lot of early goals
00:18:30more than its fair share of own goals, no direct free kicks, five red cards
00:18:35but maybe the moment of the tournament is still to come.
00:18:39This is Emerick Lepore, first involvement for Lamine Yamal
00:18:44and the first collision with Luke Shaw, who took charge of that situation.
00:18:52He runs into Dani Carvajal and Spain have got the ball back.
00:18:55I have to say that's a lovely feeling from Luke Shaw's point of view
00:18:58full-back against the wing and the first touch on that right-hand side for Yamal
00:19:03and he's right there, he's got it in his way.
00:19:05You use that experience, you've got to put your character over a youngster like that
00:19:10because they'll play with no fear and you've just got to dominate them
00:19:13in the early stages of a game.
00:19:15The Paris Southgate thought that they have started to show their real selves
00:19:19in the last few matches, they were much more like what they want to be
00:19:22against the Dutch, and they will want to assert their selves on this match too.
00:19:28The ultimate stage.
00:19:32This is Robin Le Manoir, Matt, returning from suspension.
00:19:54It's absolutely amazing looking at them, they'll obviously drop back
00:19:56as you'd expect them to do, but midfield and forwards really start
00:20:00very, very high up the pitch.
00:20:26Under pressure by Dani Olmo.
00:20:33Went up with Kane for the header and missed it.
00:20:36Norman is the backstop.
00:20:43England have edged their way past Serbia, Denmark, Slovenia, Slovakia,
00:20:47Switzerland and the Netherlands.
00:20:49No doubt this is going to require greater levels of concentration and resilience.
00:20:54Shaw against Lamine Yamal again, and England storm away with the ball.
00:20:59It's an interesting one, one thing you see when Spain are in possession
00:21:02of football right now, England are slipping back into a 4-4-1-1
00:21:05with Foden in a ten.
00:21:07Shaw to Harry Kane, Sakis playing on the right-hand side of a four
00:21:10with Bellingham on the other side.
00:21:14Keeps going to protection down that left-hand side.
00:21:17Both Saka and Bellingham will have a lot of work to do.
00:21:21Olmo's cross into the box, he's aimed towards Morata.
00:21:25Jonestones flicked it away.
00:21:28Nico Williams.
00:21:30Just fended away by a stretching Jonestones,
00:21:33and out for the first corner of the evening.
00:21:36It wasn't a great ball in, but that almost made it a good ball
00:21:39because he sort of mis-hitted it in the court.
00:21:42Jonestones by surprise there, just got the bottom of his studs on it.
00:21:46Swing a little bit off-balance here, didn't he?
00:21:51Not to get the marking right here, England.
00:21:55Delivered by Williams to that near post.
00:21:57Bellingham was back there helping out.
00:22:01Correa with a heller back towards goal.
00:22:07Saka trying to escape.
00:22:11And Spain aren't going to make it easy for you to escape.
00:22:13They're very good on the press.
00:22:16They want to keep it up.
00:22:19They want to keep you in your territory.
00:22:36Williams, a bit of space for Correa on this near touchline.
00:22:39Walker's gone out to him.
00:22:42Now it's with Fabian Ruiz.
00:22:49Correa again.
00:23:03Walker's going to have to be on his game verbally on this right-hand side
00:23:07because they're just double up with Williams.
00:23:10He needs a little bit of help just in front to stop that ball to feet
00:23:14so he can mark the wide man and the short man at the same time.
00:23:18If you block the pass off, he can do two jobs at once.
00:23:21If you don't, then he has to just drop off.
00:23:25I think the one thing he'll have on his benefit is really
00:23:27he's got a well on the hill put in front of him, Saka.
00:23:33It's always going to be interesting to see who controls possession.
00:23:37Both want to have it.
00:23:38The statistics tell you that in most games both of them dominate possession
00:23:41but you almost got the impression England might have to sit off
00:23:44and let Spain have it and then look to try and be quick and direct on the break.
00:23:50That pattern's already been set, hasn't it?
00:23:54Six minutes in, seven minutes in.
00:24:01What they are is backed by a hearty crowd.
00:24:07Come on.
00:24:12Report searching out Williams.
00:24:18Tries to get past the twin threats of Walker and Saka.
00:24:22He's prodded away by Walker at the second attempt.
00:24:24He's blocked off the run of Williams but Declan Rice has come across
00:24:27to dispossess Fabian Ruiz.
00:24:30It is a scrap, it is a fight.
00:24:32They all need to be alert in that situation.
00:24:34And they were, they were some.
00:24:36Particularly Kyle Walker, because we only got this challenge in there.
00:24:40And they don't switch off.
00:24:41They keep their concentration levels up very, very high.
00:24:43Which they're going to have to do, obviously.
00:24:50Kyle Walker wants them to edge further up the pitch.
00:24:53Escape from the early pressure that Spain have inflicted on England.
00:24:58Came with a flick.
00:24:59Away by La Norma.
00:25:01Rodri.
00:25:05Daniilmo.
00:25:07A tournament Daniilmo has had.
00:25:11A little step over by Morata.
00:25:12Just caught out his teammate, Saka.
00:25:15Tries to play a 1-2 with Kobe Meunier.
00:25:18But just couldn't find one another.
00:25:20That's a couple of times on this inside right.
00:25:24As England are defending.
00:25:25Just that ball to the first man to feed.
00:25:28That time it was Morata.
00:25:30Just picking little passes off him.
00:25:32Kyle Walker's just getting isolated.
00:25:34There's men in front of him.
00:25:35But the ball's just getting passed in between those.
00:25:40Given away by Fabian Ruiz.
00:25:41And this is where England have got to make the most of it.
00:25:45He's trying to squeeze that through to Saka.
00:25:47Might have been an alternative to Harry Kane, who was just in front of him.
00:26:04Pickford.
00:26:06I'm afraid to go direct.
00:26:07And he does have a precision pass to him.
00:26:10That was a beautiful pass.
00:26:15This is John Suggs.
00:26:22The midfield area is always going to be a bit of a challenge.
00:26:26And he's got to be careful.
00:26:28He's got to be careful.
00:26:29He's got to be careful.
00:26:30He's got to be careful.
00:26:31He's got to be careful.
00:26:32The midfield area is always going to be crucial.
00:26:35England have the numerical advantage against the Dutch.
00:26:38Holden was flying in that game.
00:26:41Him playing in the tent means they'll want to get him on the ball.
00:26:43That's a foul.
00:26:46And Rodri's first of the game.
00:26:52He catches him, doesn't he?
00:26:53Left ankle.
00:26:56Billingham just getting there in front of him.
00:26:59Disrupting Rodri will be important for England.
00:27:02He is the beating heart of the Spain team.
00:27:05The tempo setter, the line-breaking passer.
00:27:08He's only lost one of his last 79 games.
00:27:14They do defend a very high line, Spain.
00:27:17Obviously aware of the threat.
00:27:19England accept plays, want to keep them out of the box as much as possible.
00:27:22And that's there for the high line.
00:27:25First England attack.
00:27:26Aimed by Short at Stones.
00:27:28There was too much pressure on Laporte from Gueye.
00:27:33Referee, by the way, Félix Létexier from France.
00:27:36The youngest ever to referee a Euros final.
00:27:57That's where you can see Short push forward.
00:27:59He's the one to go and meet Dani Carvajal when they try and play it short.
00:28:04The trouble is, Ali, he's getting nowhere near it.
00:28:06In that case, you almost don't need the press.
00:28:10Walker's got a problem, and Williams is in behind.
00:28:12And Stones has got to try and deal with him.
00:28:14It's Nico Williams, and Stones does deal with him.
00:28:16He's got a problem, and Williams is in behind.
00:28:17He's got a problem, and Williams is in behind.

00:36:55Yeah, that's good for Walker.
00:36:56That was...
00:36:57Go on then, take me down the line.
00:36:58I've got you.
00:36:59Showing him the space.
00:37:00Yamal, Olmo.
00:37:01Williams again.
00:37:02Against the experienced and speedy Karl Walker.
00:37:03I think Williams and Yamal are brisk.
00:37:04Trying to take on him.
00:37:05Saka has put pressure on Kukerea.
00:37:06And it's also Saka's position when Walker goes to close him down, he's just on Walker's
00:37:07left.

00:38:12Foden.
00:38:13Under pressure from Kukurea and drawing the foul.
00:38:15And taking the pressure off.
00:38:19It's a silly foul from Kukurea, he's going nowhere, Foden.
00:38:22He's actually, his options are limited.
00:38:24As soon as you do that, you give him a little...
00:38:27Get out of jail free.
00:38:29Yeah, you get my call, don't you, really?
00:38:32Good closing there.
00:38:34Meunier and Foden, ganging up.
00:38:41Bobby Meunier.
00:38:42Only 19.
00:38:44I really am quite enjoying the little game of chess.
00:38:48You know, forcing them to kick it long.
00:38:50Because obviously both teams want to play out from the back.
00:38:53But they're doing everything they can to stop them doing that.
00:38:56As you can see here now.
00:38:58Foden.
00:39:04Header away by Laporte.
00:39:06Wrestling match going on between Olmo and Rice.
00:39:09Strong header from Stones.
00:39:11Lenorma and Rice again.
00:39:15Williams round the corner to Marata.
00:39:17Spanish captain dispossessed by Stones.
00:39:27Here's the other statesman of the team, Alvaro Morata
00:39:32Entered in a collision with a Spanish security guard at the end of their semi-final, but he is good enough to start
00:39:46Williams
00:39:49Danny Carvajal
00:39:54This is Lamin Yamal
00:39:57Into the box is easy, grabbed by Jordan Pickford again, greatly received
00:40:02That's why you want Yamal, you want him dropping deep, everyone behind him
00:40:06Foden's given the ball to Omo here, Yamal into the penalty area, Gay had to come across to get Foden out of trouble
00:40:14Here's a corner
00:40:19Slag wasn't it, from Foden
00:40:22It's just under pressure from Rodri, they've taken it short, into the penalty area it goes
00:40:28Stones manages to get it clear, and it might provide an escape for England, and Saka is bundled over
00:40:35The referee, well I think he was going to say, was he going to say no foul, or no yellow card?
00:40:40I'm not sure, but
00:40:41The ball's been picked up now by a Spanish player, so it definitely is a free kick
00:40:45It's handball, whatever happens
00:40:46He wasn't going to give the free kick, but
00:40:49Give the benefit of the doubt now, because the Spanish player picked the ball up
00:41:00There was a little escape route there for England
00:41:03Moved it quickly through the pitch
00:41:05The, defending that corner
00:41:17Kukerea went to the header, probably mainly thought he was going to get there ahead of Williams indeed
00:41:22Lovely little feed by him
00:41:24And now Kane, and now Shaw, Carvajal goes out to him, Shaw's got away from him
00:41:28Can he get away from Rodri, pokes it into Mainu, Bellingham trying to turn, it's hoisted away by Kukerea
00:41:35I thought Rodri did exceptionally well to go back and give Carvajal a hand there
00:41:39Good early ball from Kane out to Shaw
00:41:41Kane out to Shaw
00:41:43Saka, trying to bundle his way past Morata and Kukerea
00:41:47It's fallen kindly for England
00:41:49This is Kane, trying to squeeze it through
00:41:51Free kick is going to go against Harry Kane
00:41:54And he is going to get a yellow card
00:42:02First booking of the night
00:42:04French referee was very quickly on the scene there
00:42:12He's just overstretched him, he can't help that, he's got to pull his foot somewhere
00:42:18Here's a yellow card
00:42:21That's the one there, I think Rodri does well at the back
00:42:24Gives Carvajal a hand here, it's not a great touch is it
00:42:28Bellingham it comes to, Shaw does well, he's a bright start Shaw to be fair to him
00:42:33Moves it right to left between his feet
00:42:35England have had their little spurts of chances haven't they
00:42:38They're the ones that have had those little switch passes
00:42:41From midfield out to wide areas
00:42:44And created a few little awkward moments for the Spanish
00:42:50I think that's very fair
00:42:53With 25 odd minutes going, Lee I just think
00:42:56That's a very fair game
00:42:58I think that's a very fair game
00:43:00I think that's a very fair game
00:43:02With 25 odd minutes going, Lee I just think
00:43:05Possession of football, yeah you look at Spain and expect them to have that
00:43:08But they haven't really had anything clear cut, neither have England
00:43:11But they've certainly looked as though they've got something, maybe one or two half chances knocking about
00:43:16In the Spanish penalty box
00:43:19Luke Shaw has provided the brightness down that left hand side
00:43:22He's turned 29 on Friday
00:43:25He did score in the last final after just 1 minute and 57 seconds
00:43:29But he said it counted for nothing because of what happened afterwards
00:43:32He said it was the worst hurt he'd ever felt
00:43:36He's got a chance to channel that pain tonight
00:43:39Bellingham certainly helped him on that left hand side
00:43:41I thought Bellingham would play a little bit narrower
00:43:43He'd be a bit more exposed but
00:43:45Doing a good job on that left side of midfield
00:43:51Bellingham putting pressure on club mate Carvajal
00:43:53Shaw across to prevent Yamal from getting into a strike
00:43:59Kukerea
00:44:15Kukerea
00:44:18Al Williams
00:44:21Back into Fabian Ruiz
00:44:23Amin Yamal
00:44:24On the overlap on that right side was Danny Carvajal
00:44:27They did try to squeeze it through to him
00:44:29And again he takes no chances
00:44:36Carvajal to Fabian Ruiz
00:44:37Wanders away from Mainu
00:44:39Tries to get his strike away
00:44:40And the block takes the
00:44:43Venom out of the effort
00:44:51He was happy with that game
00:44:58And there is a man who knows what it's like to lift a major trophy for Spain
00:45:04And that's Indy Esther in the crowd tonight
00:45:08One of the best, tremendous football
00:45:10Double Euros and World Cup winner
00:45:13Back in the Spanish heyday
00:45:16When in boules
00:45:17Oh!
00:45:19Yeah
00:45:20Oh!
00:45:22Yeah
00:45:37This is Jordan Pickford
00:45:42Bellingham did well
00:45:43Went up above Lenormand
00:45:44Then chased the ball into the corner
00:45:48And there's a Spanish throw
00:45:49We certainly know he's about
00:45:51We know why they're doing that
00:45:52Obviously you talked about it before Ali
00:45:54About that press
00:45:55So they're going long
00:45:56But they've just got to get another person around the ball
00:46:02Bellingham doing well there
00:46:03But he's on his own
00:46:04Yeah
00:46:16One back again
00:46:20Get up!
00:46:25Elected by Sterns
00:46:31Poked by Kane
00:46:33On his way out to Sacco
00:46:34And all the way through to
00:46:36Hunai Simón
00:46:49Goal!
00:46:51Goal!
00:46:53Goal!
00:46:55And Morata had a great chance to play that down the inside
00:46:57Oh that was a break
00:46:58Let me tell you
00:46:59That was a break
00:47:01Morata's touch was not good
00:47:02The pass through was on
00:47:04And it wasn't a difficult one
00:47:06It wasn't
00:47:08Just a bit exposed there England
00:47:10Got a free kick here
00:47:12Munielmo complaining
00:47:13He's going to get a yellow card as well now
00:47:20Goal!
00:47:26I'd like to see that replay again
00:47:28Of the missed passes
00:47:29Yeah
00:47:31I think it was
00:47:32Ulmo was on wasn't it
00:47:34Definitely was
00:47:36A bit painful
00:47:37A bit painful, yeah
00:47:40And the frustration maybe for
00:47:43Gunielmo after
00:47:45Seeing
00:47:46Opening the light up in front of him.
00:47:50It certainly did, and the ball came into Morata,
00:47:52I'm thinking it's just a simple pass,
00:47:54but out inside the left foot, just knocked him into the space,
00:47:57and effectively he would have been through.
00:48:02It's been a bit of a stock start, hasn't it?
00:48:06England have had some skirmishes inside the Spanish attacking third,
00:48:11so far they've restricted Spain to possession only,
00:48:15neither of the two teams have had a shot on target.
00:48:33England's substitutes warming up already.
00:48:37Karl Palmer.
00:48:42David Chiesa was also down there.
00:48:46Were you ever a sub, Al?
00:48:48Yeah, on various occasions you won't be surprised here.
00:48:51I can't see you in an early warm-up.
00:48:54I certainly wasn't in an early warm-up,
00:48:57but I was just about to say it's amazing that Karl Palmer hasn't started a game
00:49:00and he's having a great tournament.
00:49:02It's amazing, isn't it?
00:49:04It's a bit like, until the quarter-finals,
00:49:07what Danny Elmo was doing for Spain.
00:49:09Sometimes you play your best games when you don't play.
00:49:16That's always been my philosophy.
00:49:20Shaw.
00:49:24Trying to charge forward.
00:49:26Karmahal.
00:49:28Amin Ruiz has got Kobi Beynou and Foden around him.
00:49:32Gabriel there for him.
00:49:34There's a little collision there, Foden has come off worst.
00:49:38I think he just gambled that Ruiz was going to turn back on his right side.
00:49:43And he did, but he's just a little bit unlucky.
00:49:56He's had an eventful tournament, Phil Foden.
00:49:59He hit the post against Denmark.
00:50:00He had to dash home to attend the birth of his third child.
00:50:05The middle of the tournament.
00:50:08He was terrific in the first 35 minutes against the Dutch.
00:50:12He is the subject of the England song,
00:50:15which is once again doing the rounds here tonight.
00:50:17You can hear it in the background now.
00:50:20But he's yet to have his moment.
00:50:24He was so close to that.
00:50:26His effort was cleared off the line.
00:50:29Against the Netherlands in Dortmund.
00:50:34Here's Fabian Ruiz from Spain.
00:50:38Dani Karmahal.
00:50:40Now a chance for Yamau to run at Shaw.
00:50:42He's got the beating on the outside, but Shaw did superbly.
00:50:46Yeah, right on the ball.
00:50:48Just because the player's faster than you,
00:50:50doesn't mean to say he's just going to run past you.
00:50:52Just using all of his experience there.
00:50:55It's actually an intelligent play from Dani almost,
00:50:57because he was covering that space,
00:50:59and Karmahal just played the ball to Yamau.
00:51:02He just ran away and let him go into a one-move-on situation,
00:51:05which Shaw handled very, very well.
00:51:12Important, Rodri.
00:51:13Real threats from set-pieces.
00:51:15And Morata too.
00:51:17He didn't have to be alert.
00:51:18Up goes Lenormat.
00:51:20There was a collision inside the box.
00:51:21It has taken a deflection.
00:51:23And the Port wants more than what is being offered
00:51:26by the referee from France.
00:51:49They are not checking it.
00:51:51And it will be a corner kick for Spain.
00:51:54And they have racked them up in the opening 35 minutes.
00:52:08So much space here for Dani.
00:52:09Olmo will strike it.
00:52:11Straight at Harry Kane.
00:52:14Get back into a good area for Maneu.
00:52:18Olmo comes across.
00:52:20He's the better of Maneu.
00:52:23Morata and Rodri.
00:52:28He did really well there, Dani Olmo,
00:52:30because I was thinking he was looking at his goalkeeper,
00:52:32and Phil Foden was coming in on the blind side.
00:52:34But he got back onto his right foot and got out of there well.
00:52:42Certainly, England have been made to work.
00:52:44Yeah, they just got caught a little bit on that short corner,
00:52:47which is not great.
00:52:50Good girl, that one.
00:53:03Very quickly off his mark, straight into Williams.
00:53:06He's got past him this time.
00:53:09He's got past everyone with that cross.
00:53:11Far post.
00:53:13If you're the full-back, you've got to be looking over your shoulder
00:53:15every second or so, just to see where everybody is.
00:53:18And he does that.
00:53:20This was a result of that short corner.
00:53:22Not a great shot from Olmo, but he's in the game, isn't he?
00:53:26He's certainly in the game.
00:53:27He's competing with that man for the golden boot,
00:53:31which is still up for grabs.
00:53:35A few players all tied on three.
00:53:37Kane, Olmo, Gakpo, Fekal Tadzi, Musiala, Skrantz.
00:53:42For the first time, it's going to be shared by all of them
00:53:44if they finish on the same number of goals.
00:53:48Williams.
00:53:54Williams.
00:54:02Now Roderick.
00:54:05Sliding it out to Yamal.
00:54:10Williams has popped up on the other side now.
00:54:18Williams.
00:54:24There's enough space for Williams on that far side
00:54:26because there's too many to mark.
00:54:30Yamal.
00:54:32Trying to get past Bellingham, who stands firm.
00:54:36It's a foot race.
00:54:37Palfrey says play on.
00:54:40Norman got there first.
00:54:42Carvajal keeps it moving.
00:54:45Spanish pressure on the England penalty box.
00:54:48By Shaw.
00:54:49Bellingham's got it this time.
00:54:50He's gone past Roderick.
00:54:52He can't get past Fabian Ruiz.
00:55:01Back in it goes for Fabian Ruiz.
00:55:03Again, it's too hefty.
00:55:04England have got to find a way, when they receive the ball,
00:55:07get it back in those deep areas of getting out.
00:55:10The problem is Harry Kane's deep again.
00:55:12That's the problem.
00:55:13He's ten yards short of Bellingham there.
00:55:16For the first time for Bellingham, it's a ball,
00:55:18or an upmeg, I've got to say, on Roderick.
00:55:20He'll take that all day.
00:55:21But the one thing he wants, he wants to look up and see a body,
00:55:23somebody he can fire it into or somebody he can spin behind.
00:55:26But Harry is south of it, effectively, and he's got nobody to hit.
00:55:30I talked to the boys in the studio,
00:55:32I talked about that before the game as well.
00:55:34Sometimes it just creeps into his game
00:55:37and he just goes searching for it.
00:55:39He does a defensive job at times in that position,
00:55:42but as you said, he's doing a better defensive job
00:55:45than he could just be showing for the guy on the ball.
00:55:51Bellingham wins the header.
00:55:53He tries to get onto the flicker.
00:55:55Andry there once again.
00:55:58Just aggressive control of that midfield.
00:56:00Spain in this first half.
00:56:07Nice.
00:56:08He enjoys that walk-up, doesn't he?
00:56:10He just enjoys a 1-2-1 contest.
00:56:15Facts himself to handle it, I think.
00:56:18Facts himself to take on anyone in a footrace,
00:56:21even at the age of 34.
00:56:2490th cap for Carl Walker.
00:56:28Southgate joke yesterday that they'd retired him three times
00:56:31and he keeps wheeling himself out.
00:56:35Terrific servant for England.
00:56:39He has been on the journey.
00:56:42Stone's going on the journey now.
00:56:44Along a winding road, trying to find Harry Kane.
00:56:48Didn't know he was to keep it alive,
00:56:49when really he wasn't favoured to do so.
00:56:51But now he's out of position.
00:56:52Rice is filling in for him.
00:56:59Williams.
00:57:01Him out.
00:57:03They've got back in their shape.
00:57:07It's a bit of bravery by John Sturms
00:57:09to take that ball out of defence.
00:57:11I don't mind that.
00:57:12You've got plenty of men back there.
00:57:14And also Shaw's position, when he went out to Le Mans,
00:57:17he wasn't deep as a full-back normally is.
00:57:20He just stayed in midfield, and that just stopped him
00:57:22getting a run at him.
00:57:43Him out.
00:57:47Almost got hold of it.
00:57:48It was cleared by Rice, but it's coming back very quickly.
00:57:51Rice has nabbed it again.
00:57:53And he's gone on a forward run.
00:57:55Spread to Bellingham.
00:57:58Bowden and Saka joining the other side.
00:58:00Bellingham gave it away initially,
00:58:01but has done well to win it back.
00:58:03Kane trying to spread it.
00:58:05Here's Saka.
00:58:07Walker going on the inside.
00:58:10In by Maino.
00:58:12I thought Saka could have given him it.
00:58:14I really thought it was an opportunity,
00:58:16it's a brilliant run inside from Walker.
00:58:19Do you know what I would have preferred?
00:58:21Walker stays here on the half-way line.
00:58:23He's got the full-back one-on-one.
00:58:26The centre-halves have gone into the middle
00:58:28to expect a cross, and he isolated him.
00:58:31As soon as Walker comes over,
00:58:32the centre-halves have got to come over and join.
00:58:34I just think he flooded the area, he didn't need to.
00:58:39Gareth Southgate said sometimes it's going to take a bit of luck,
00:58:42sometimes it's going to take a bit of resilience.
00:58:48Whatever way,
00:58:50you have to do whatever it takes to succeed.
00:58:53And it's going to be a night like that.
00:58:58Getting over the line is the only thing that is important.

01:01:27But when Mo breaks, Williams is favourite.
01:01:29But Walker makes himself favourite, gets in front,
01:01:32keeps the pressure on, earns a free kick.
01:01:35Good position as well.
01:01:37They've got enough angle on this.
01:01:39They'll play, as you know, and as you've said,
01:01:41they'll play a high line on this defensively.
01:01:44Should be a load of space just to get that ball
01:01:46in between goalkeeper and the back line.
01:01:49Well, there's been very few chances, no doubt about that.
01:01:54Spain have scored nearly twice as many times
01:01:56as England at this tournament.
01:01:5813 goals compared to seven.
01:02:00They've notched up more attempts.
01:02:02They've notched up more attempts in this game,
01:02:04but it's marginal and no-one is yet to have a shot on target.
01:02:12Rapport having a bit of an issue here.
01:02:15I thought he was going to get that shot away then.
01:02:17He came from nowhere.
01:02:29Shaw and Rice designing over the free kick.
01:02:32Shaw's delivery from Septic is left-footed.
01:02:34Usually Tim Toy probably hasn't taken one for a while.
01:02:37But he's got it.
01:02:38He's got it.
01:02:39He's got it.
01:02:40He's got it.
01:02:41He's got it.
01:02:42Usually Tim Toy probably hasn't taken one for a while.
01:02:50Here's a highlight.
01:02:51It's Rice who delivers.
01:02:52It's to the back post.
01:02:53It comes to Foden.
01:02:55And it's England who have the first shot on target.
01:02:59He's sort of falling back.
01:03:01He wasn't expecting it.
01:03:02A little flick.
01:03:03A little bit wide of him as well.
01:03:05He's done well to get that on target.
01:03:07Because look at the stretch on that.
01:03:08He's done ever so well, actually.
01:03:11What a chance.
01:03:12Yeah.
01:03:13The only thing he would say regarding the high line,
01:03:15it actually almost forces England and Declan Rice in particular to play that ball.
01:03:20Because look at Shaw's in-swing.
01:03:22It was a very, very difficult one to find a player to play into that area.
01:03:27The high line makes it almost Rice's out-swinger all day.
01:03:33Almost worked for England.
01:03:36He's had a stellar season, Harry Kane.
01:03:38Top Bundesliga scorer.
01:03:39Joint top scorer in the Champions League.
01:03:41European golden shoe winner.
01:03:44Standing with a shout of winning the golden boot at the Euros.
01:03:50He may only get one chance tonight.
01:03:53We'll thank on him to take it.
01:04:04We're into two minutes of added time.
01:04:06I must say yesterday,
01:04:08players and management staff were very relaxed.
01:04:11As they dealt with the media.
01:04:13They haven't been relaxed for that first 45 minutes.
01:04:15Everybody's had to be on their metal.
01:04:17After what happened three years ago,
01:04:19England's mindset was to come here and win.
01:04:21But that is only possible if you stick in the game.
01:04:24They've done that so far.
01:04:25Phil Foden with the only effort that either team have had on target.
01:04:29We've got analysis on the way from Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Ian Wright next.
01:04:33But it's halftime in the Euros final in Berlin.
01:04:36It's finally poised.
01:04:37State nil, England nil.
