Wildfires continue to burn across Europe as temperatures remain high

The Italian capital and parts of Albania and North Macedonia have seen some of the worst incidents of fires so far this year.

00:00Parts of Europe are continuing to battle wildfires as temperatures remain high.
00:06In Rome, a significant fire burned through the natural reserve of Monte Mario on Wednesday
00:10afternoon.
00:11Firefighters were seen dropping water from helicopters, while many residents were evacuated
00:15as the flames approached nearby buildings.
00:17The location of the fire was just 2.5 kilometres from the iconic St Peter's Basilica.
00:31In Albania, on Wednesday, wildfires continued to burn too.
00:35In the southern village of Mascalur, they came close to homes but ultimately caused
00:38little damage.
00:39In the coastal town of Shenzhen, though, the picture was bleaker.
00:43Albanian firefighters, military personnel and volunteers managed to get a major fire
00:47there under control after it damaged a roof and two beach bars, sending visitors fleeing
00:51in panic.
00:52An Albanian Army Cougar helicopter and two Italian planes, part of the European Union's
00:56civil protection mechanism, helped spare the beach town from the flames.
01:01In neighbouring North Macedonia, a major fire raged east of Sveti Nikola.
01:06An Army helicopter and three air tractor planes were engaged to stop the fire.
01:10In the remote village of Koko Shinje, an elderly man died from smoke inhalation after the village
01:14was affected by the fire.
01:17Firefighters were able to save his wife.
01:20The country's Prime Minister assured the public that there are sufficient firefighters and
01:23members of the Army and Ministry of the Interior to manage the fires despite them being at
01:27a historic peak.
