00:00All right, we got coach James Young to talk Olympic basketball with us on a Friday. Thank
00:09God. Hey, coach, I know you saw that at least the one shot that I sent you of my new KDs,
00:17the orange and black ones. Did you like those puppies?
00:19Oh, I mean, for Raleigh, I mean, you know, happy belated birthday. I know I talked to
00:24you on your birthday, but those are fire, man. Listen, at the end of the day, there's
00:29nothing like getting a nice dinner and a couple of nice pairs of kicks on a birthday.
00:36Did you see the other ones? I got the tatums too, which I know. I don't approve of any
00:42Celtic tie ins with me. I don't as long as they're not green. I just pretend there's
00:48someone else's shoe. I'm not a fan of his work, but I like his shoes. They are badass
00:55and I have them. They're in like lavender. They're, I mean, to tell you, they're really
01:00purple and lavender. They're something. I mean, if I put them on and walk in the gym,
01:04I'm going to have chicks chasing me down the street.
01:08I mean, you're probably walking in the gym with those puppies on. You already got about
01:1115 points in the bag. You didn't even take it a shot. So to me, listen, hey, you look,
01:17you look good, you play good. So if the feet game is like the kids say on fleek, then you're
01:24obviously ready to go.
01:26I feel good today. So what do you think? I'm not surprised to be honest with you. I think
01:34Germany's better than France. I think Wemba Nyama's the best player, but I think Germany's
01:39a better team and they're approving it right now.
01:44Yeah, listen, the line was minus four and I thought it could have been a lot higher.
01:48I thought the only reason why it wasn't worse was the fact that it's in Paris. So when you
01:54look at it, France particularly, besides Wemba Nyama, they have the one kid that comes off
02:00the bench that's a shooter. Guard play is so important, Pharrell. Guard and small forward
02:08play. So one to three. If you are better at the one, two or three spot, the ability
02:14to handle the ball, handle pressure, create shots, right, for yourself and others, and
02:20shoot the ball, make them better. So when you look at Upps, you look at Schroeder, you
02:25look at Wagner, that's better than Fournier and Nick Batum and the other kid for France.
02:32So to me, I'm not shocked Germany's winning. I'm just shocked how much it is. But if you
02:41looked at the way France is playing, Pharrell, they haven't been at all impressive in the
02:47two games previous to this, even though they won both.
02:51Well Wemba Nyama's not doing anything in this game. He's got eight rebounds in one block
02:55and that's it.
02:56Well, here's the thing. You've got to get him the ball. Like, you've got to have a guy
03:03that can get him the ball. And I don't think he's at a stage yet where he's just going
03:08to say, you know what, I've got to start bombing away. Now he's probably going to have to now
03:12that I'm 21 points at halftime. But to me, it's guard play. The best player on the floor
03:18right now is Franz Wagner with 16 points. I mean, there's no other way around it. But
03:23Schroeder's playing a really good game. You know, the shooter offense hasn't made any
03:27shots yet. And then you just, they're more balanced, Pharrell. They have more guys that
03:32can hit you and they have better guard play. And when you're big, Pharrell, you know this,
03:37guards got to get you the pill. And if they can't get you the pill in spots, then you're
03:43not going to score.
03:46Schroeder I think has been fantastic with six dimes to go with his 15. He's got three
03:51threes. We all know what this guy's capable of and what he does in the NBA. He can flat
03:57out play the point.
03:58And I think here's the thing with Dennis Schroeder. To me, he's a fabulous point guard. I still
04:05think he blew it, you know, years ago when he had that 4 for 84 deal with the Lakers
04:08and turned it down. And he never made the money back. But even last year in the World
04:13Cup, I think he was the best player. So when you look at Schroeder, it's simply put, he
04:18can score, he's quick as a hiccup, and he can create. What is Dennis Schroeder's hang-up
04:25at times? The ability to shoot the ball from the three-point line. If you look at the game
04:31that Jeremy had with us beforehand, it was the fact that he didn't shoot the ball well
04:34from three. But he also had a double-double. So Dennis Schroeder can get you in the spots.
04:39But if he's hitting Pharrell three out of five threes, that's a really dangerous sign
04:44because he can beat you to the cup, he can create for others, and then if he can knock
04:49the three down, now you've got to get up in his space. And now those drives become even
04:55more dangerous.
04:56Giannis won a game today. He had 20 points, seven boards, six assists. They won their
05:03first game, finally, Greece. They beat Australia.
05:05Yeah, I mean, listen. Giannis is going to do what Giannis is going to do. But they just
05:10don't have a lot of others around them. So when you look at what happened, nine of 26
05:15from three from Australia, this is a team that lives and dies by the three-point line.
05:19So you had a good play out of Giannis, but you got a little bit more help. You had two
05:23other guys that got you, three other guys that got you to double figures. So it was
05:26more help around Giannis. That one and two, those are tough games. And to me, Giannis
05:35has to carry that team on his back. He was able to get a win. So good for them to not
05:39be 0-3 after the group stage.
05:43So Canada's 3-0, Shea Gilgis with 20 today. They beat Spain by three.
05:50Yeah, but they were also up, I think, 10 or 11. They were up a good amount at the break.
05:55So I think, to me, Canada's another team that's not playing, I think, to the level of what
06:01I think they are absolutely capable of. So to me, SGA was really, really good. Dylan
06:07Brooks, pedestrian. You know, RJ Barrett has played pretty well. His ability to get
06:13to his spots. They do a good job of getting into the lane and finish. I just think that's
06:17going to be a problem when they have to play a team like us, the Americans, because of
06:21BAM, because of Embiid, and because of AD, the shot blockers at the paint.
06:27So let me ask you, the women play Sunday against Germany. They're both unbeaten. How do you
06:33think the U.S. women will do? And the men play tomorrow against Puerto Rico. That's
06:37not going to be a problem at all.
06:38No, it's not going to be a problem. U.S.A. men win big. Whatever Embiid's prop is, go
06:43ahead and take it, because at the end of the day, they're going to force-feed the ball
06:46to him after he got no playing time last game. In regards to the women, a little bit of a
06:51tricky spot. Last time they played Germany, Satu Sabli was really, really poor. Three
06:57out of 17 from the floor. I think she's better. Look at Satu Sabli's props. Look for the U.S.A.
07:02to advance and win and cover the spread.
07:05There you have it. All right, Coach. Appreciate it. Enjoy the rack and the rest of this game
07:11right now with Germany and France and the game Saturday and the game Sunday. Thanks,
07:16buddy. Have a great weekend.
