02:46Thank you for watching Turning Point. And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
02:54Eight Spiritual Blessings.
02:55The book of Ephesians is all about the blessing of God on our lives.
03:04It's also about our behavior. In fact, the book is easy to outline
03:08around those two themes. The first chapters are about what we believe,
03:13and the second chapters is how we behave. How many of you know how you behave depends
03:17on what you believe? And Ephesians just lays that out for us.
03:21Chapters 1 through 3, here's what you believe.
03:23Chapters 4 and following, here's how you behave.
03:26Paul is telling us that our behavior is grounded in God's blessing,
03:30and that is why I have titled this series of messages, Belief That Behaves.
03:35This passage of Scripture that we're going to study today is truly an interesting one.
03:40It is the longest sentence in the Bible.
03:43If you read it in the Greek language, there are no periods.
03:46From the beginning of verse 3 all the way to the end of verse 14.
03:51I know that's true because when I was in seminary in Greek class,
03:54I had to diagram these verses.
03:56And the diagram ran off the first page and onto a second page.
04:00Everything modifies everything else, and the whole sentence just keeps going
04:03and going and going. It's amazing.
04:08I used to wonder why Paul would include such a long sentence in his epistle,
04:13but I think I understand it now.
04:14I think Paul started dictating to the Ephesians about all the blessings
04:17God has for us, and he got so excited he couldn't even take a breath.
04:21He just kept going one right after the other until he exhausted everything
04:25he had to say, and then he quit.
04:28He started with the blessings connected to eternity past and carried them
04:31all the way through our present lives.
04:34And then he ended up in eternity future.
04:37As a result, this list of gifts is sequential.
04:40Everyone reinforces the one that came before and introduces the one
04:43that comes after.
04:44It's truly an amazing paragraph in the Bible.
04:48I wanna follow Paul's example in this message.
04:50There's so much packed into these verses that I could write a book about them.
04:54I could preach a message on every little phrase.
04:56But if I did that, I would lose the essence of what Paul wants.
04:59He went through these one after the other like staccato,
05:02and I'm gonna try to do that the same.
05:03So, put on your listening ears.
05:06We're gonna move.
05:07Here's the whirlwind tour through some of the gifts we've received
05:10from our good and gracious Father in heaven.
05:13First of all, in Ephesians 1-4, we are told that we are chosen.
05:18We're chosen.
05:19Paul begins the Bible's longest sentence by telling every person
05:23who has accepted the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ
05:26that we have been chosen.
05:28Notice what it says in verse 4.
05:30Just as God chose us in him before the foundation of the world,
05:35that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.
05:40The Bible tells us that God is love, and love cannot live alone.
05:44Love needs others, and so God determined to bring to himself
05:48a group of people that he would choose to come
05:51and spend eternity with him.
05:53And Scripture says he chose these people for himself
05:57before the world ever began.
06:00Now, I know I'm treading on some very controversial territory here.
06:04When I write about being chosen, maybe you've heard the word
06:06election and it's stuck in your throat.
06:09What does it mean when it says Almighty God chose us
06:12before the foundation of the world?
06:15Well, I've studied this carefully in the Greek language
06:17and in all the commentaries, and I figured it out.
06:19Are you ready to hear what it means?
06:21It means God has chosen us.
06:25That's what it means.
06:28Whether we like it or not, whether we can understand it
06:30or not, the Word of God says that before there was a world,
06:33before you and I existed, before there was anything
06:36in the heart of Almighty God, he had thoughts about us.
06:40He pictured our faces.
06:42He understood our hearts.
06:43He fashioned the ins and outs of our minds,
06:46and then knowing everything about who you would be
06:48and what you would become, if you're a Christian,
06:51he chose you.
06:53You say, well, how did I get chosen and somebody else didn't?
06:58I'll never be able to comprehend that.
07:00Truth is a mystery that I cannot explain,
07:02but it is still truth and it is still God's Word.
07:06Now, please don't get arrogant about this if you feel chosen
07:09because it's really nothing to do with you at all.
07:12You didn't get chosen because you're handsome
07:13or because you're pretty, because you have a great intellect,
07:16your IQ is higher than others, or even because
07:18you're a good moral person.
07:20God chose you and me because of Jesus Christ.
07:25Our choice has nothing to do with who we are
07:28and everything to do with who he is.
07:31The Bible says it, we can't contradict it.
07:33I'm unfaithful to you if I don't teach it.
07:36Whatever you might think about this truth,
07:38Almighty God has chosen you.
07:41And you should be able to say with humility,
07:44thank you, Lord, for choosing me
07:46before the foundation of the world.
07:49Then we're adopted.
07:51Verse 5 says,
07:52having predestined to us to adoption
07:54as sons of Jesus Christ to himself
07:57according to the good pleasure of his will.
08:00And there's another one of those dangerous words,
08:02predestined, you've probably heard of that word before.
08:05Paul doesn't use that word in the way
08:07many people use it today.
08:08He was not saying that in eternity past,
08:10God predestined the entire outcome of your life
08:13so that you don't have free will
08:15and don't have the ability to make any real choices.
08:18No, the word predestined just means to set boundaries
08:20around something so that it stays on a certain course.
08:24Here's what the Bible says,
08:25God chose you in eternity past,
08:27and then he predestined or predetermined in his sovereignty
08:30that you would be adopted as a son or daughter
08:32in his household.
08:35This is a critical truth because adoption in the ancient world
08:37was way different than it is now.
08:39We have an adopted child,
08:40and we've been through the adoption process,
08:42and we know what that's all about.
08:44But in Paul's day, children didn't really have
08:46any legal rights or status until they reached a certain age,
08:50until they became mature, and when that time came,
08:53the child would be brought forth
08:54and officially recognized as an adult,
08:58which meant they were granted all the rights
09:00and all the privileges they deserved
09:02as an adult within that family.
09:04So, what God communicated through this passage of Scripture
09:07is that when he chose us in the past,
09:10he determined that we should be adopted into his family
09:12as mature sons and mature daughters.
09:15We would have all the rights and privileges
09:17associated with a member of his family.
09:20That's news, of course,
09:22but here is the really astounding thing.
09:25The Bible says that because we have been adopted
09:27as mature sons and daughters in the family of God,
09:30we have the same status with Almighty God as Jesus Christ.
09:37We are co-heirs with him, the Bible says,
09:40which means everything Christ has with the Father,
09:43we have with the Father.
09:47Try to let that reality sink in for a moment.
09:50You have been chosen by God.
09:52You have been blessed not just with inclusion
09:54in his household, but full adoption as a son or daughter.
09:58You are legally and spiritually a child of God.
10:04And then Paul says, and this one I like
10:06about as much as any of them, we are accepted.
10:12I recently came across a video featuring a young man
10:14named Kurt Kinley from Normal, Illinois.
10:17At the time of filming, Kurt was 20 years old
10:19and working two jobs.
10:21He also had Down syndrome.
10:23And the video captured the moment that Kurt opened
10:26an acceptance letter from a local community college.
10:29As he takes the letter out of the envelope,
10:31you can see the anticipation on his face as well as the fear.
10:36His head swivels from side to side as he reads
10:38the first few sentences, and then he raises his arms
10:41in triumph and says,
10:42I'm in!
10:43I've been accepted!
10:48Kurt's laughter and shouts of joy are quickly drowned out
10:51by his family and friends gathered around him.
10:54And after a moment of filming, he literally bounces with joy.
10:58His mom asked him to read the letter out loud,
10:59and he started to do that.
11:01He stands with his father, and he dutifully reads
11:03the first sentence, and here's what the sentence said.
11:06We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted.
11:09And he couldn't go any further.
11:10He just fell apart.
11:12Oh, what it means to be accepted.
11:15As you look around the world today, men and women,
11:17what you see is Kurt Kinley's not the only person
11:19looking for acceptance.
11:23That's the case for all of us, acceptance from our parents.
11:26I've heard so many stories from guys who grew up
11:28in my generation who never really ever felt accepted
11:31by their father.
11:33And they say, well, that was a different generation.
11:35Fathers back then didn't communicate very much.
11:38They just sort of were stoic, you know?
11:40I hope you didn't have a stoic father.
11:43And if you are a father, don't be a stoic father.
11:47Sometimes acceptance from our friends,
11:49we live in a culture right now where the internet rules
11:52and so many kids are getting off the track
11:55because they don't feel accepted,
11:57and they go to the internet and they try to find acceptance
11:59there, and they don't find it.
12:00And if they're not careful, they get on the wrong side
12:02of somebody, and then they get bullied on the internet
12:05and sometimes destroyed.
12:06More suicides happening in that age group
12:09than we have ever had in the history of our country
12:12because of the lack of being accepted.
12:15Acceptance from the world, acceptance where you work,
12:19and then there's acceptance from God.
12:23How do I know that God has accepted me?
12:27Those of us who have chosen to follow Jesus can rest assured,
12:31as Paul makes clear in verses 5 and 6,
12:33we have already been accepted by our Heavenly Father.
12:37Having predestined us to adoption by sons,
12:40by Jesus Christ to himself, according to his good pleasure,
12:44to the praise and glory of his grace,
12:46by which he has made us accepted in the beloved.
12:51Notice the word beloved.
12:52It's a term that refers to Jesus Christ.
12:55God looks down on his Son and says,
12:57this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.
13:01Paul was teaching you and me who were chosen and adopted
13:05that we have also been accepted, and because of Jesus Christ,
13:09we belong to his family in the same way
13:11that Jesus Christ belongs to his family.
13:15Don't you love that gift?
13:17Isn't that a blessing worth treasuring?
13:19Almighty God accepts you in the same way
13:21he accepts his own Son, his beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
13:25So, when you're having that moment of concern,
13:28and maybe sometimes it's a little bit of self-pity too,
13:31and you wonder, does anybody accept me?
13:33Do I belong to anybody?
13:34Does anybody care?
13:35Let me ask you to go back and read this again.
13:38Underline it with your pen.
13:39Almighty God has accepted you.
13:41And listen to me, if you've been accepted
13:43by the highest source and power in the universe,
13:46you have flat out been accepted.
13:49And you are accepted, and you belong to God.
13:52And you don't have to walk around wondering,
13:54do I fit and do I measure up?
13:57You measure up with God because he uses
14:00the measuring stick of Jesus Christ.
14:03And when he looks to measure you,
14:05he measures Jesus Christ in your place.
14:07And Jesus Christ always measures up.
14:12We are chosen, we are adopted, we are accepted.
14:16And then the Bible says we're redeemed.
14:19Look at the next verse in the longest sentence in the Bible,
14:21in whom we have redemption through his blood,
14:25the forgiveness of sins according to the riches
14:27of his grace.
14:29Now, that's a word we hear a lot in church,
14:31and I'm glad to get off those other more distinguishing terms
14:34and talk about redemption.
14:36What does it mean to be redeemed?
14:38Well, in the Greek language, Paul used to write this letter.
14:41To redeem something meant to buy it back
14:43and cause it to be set free.
14:45My wife Don and I have had the privilege
14:47of traveling around the country a lot.
14:49Some years back, we stopped in a southern city
14:53and stayed at a hotel.
14:54While we were checking in, the concierge said to us,
14:57be sure you go and see the marketplace.
15:00Just about a block from this hotel is one of the old
15:03slave markets they used to use to sell and buy slaves,
15:07but they've turned it into a kind of flea market.
15:11And you ought to go down there and see it.
15:14Well, we did.
15:16We went down, and I have to tell you,
15:18I had the eeriest feeling while we were there.
15:21I was walking through a place that represented
15:23one of the worst moments in the history of our nation,
15:26a period in which men and women created in the image
15:29of Almighty God were bought and sold like pieces of property,
15:34just like the various goods being marketed
15:36and purchased at that flea market today.
15:39It's a terrible thought, a terrible image,
15:42but I want you to keep that image in mind
15:44as you read Romans 6, 17, and 18 with me.
15:47It's on the screen.
15:49But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin,
15:53yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine
15:56to which you were delivered, and having been set free from sin,
16:00you became slaves of righteousness.
16:05What a wonderful text that is.
16:07The Bible says that you and I used to be slaves
16:10on the slave market of sin.
16:11What does that mean?
16:12Before you come to Christ,
16:15it's impossible for you not to sin.
16:18I mean, you still sin after you become a Christian,
16:20but it doesn't have to be that way.
16:22But before you have a power within you to help you
16:25not to do sinful things, you're a slave to it.
16:28You're caught up in the slave market of sin.
16:31But one day, Almighty God came down to buy us back.
16:34Did you know what he used for collateral?
16:36He used his own Son, Jesus Christ,
16:39and his precious blood.
16:41He bought us by the precious blood of Christ
16:44off of the slave market of sin,
16:46and that blood was spilled on the altar of the cross,
16:50and he bought us back so that we could be free not to sin
16:54and free to do right.
16:57He redeemed us.
17:00We are chosen, we are adopted, we are accepted,
17:03we are redeemed.
17:05And then it says, we are enlightened.
17:07Verses 1, 8, and 9, let's read it.
17:10Which he made to abound toward us all in wisdom and prudence,
17:13having made known to us the mystery of his will,
17:15according to his good pleasure which he purposed in himself.
17:19Now, there's two phrases here that I want you to notice.
17:22First, God's riches and grace abound toward us in these ways,
17:26through wisdom and prudence.
17:27And then God makes known to us the mystery of his will.
17:31This goes back to the idea that before you become a Christian,
17:35you can't understand God.
17:36You can't understand godly things.
17:37You just wonder, what is that all about?
17:40What are those crazy people doing that think that?
17:43Well, let me give you a verse of Scripture that explains it.
17:451 Corinthians 2, 14 says,
17:47but the natural man does not receive the things
17:51of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him.
17:54He cannot know them because they are spiritually discerned.
17:58We can't understand spiritual things in the natural.
18:01We need the spiritual.
18:04And the Bible says that when you become a Christian,
18:05what happens is, if you want to know God's will as a Christian,
18:08you can know it, and that's a promise of God.
18:10The issue is, sometimes we don't want to know it.
18:13We want to know it so we can measure it
18:14against our other options.
18:17If you want to know the will of God,
18:18you have to know the will of God so you will do it.
18:19You have to say, okay, Lord, tell me what to do,
18:21and I promise you, when you tell me what to do, I'll do it.
18:23That's how you find the will of God.
18:26And then we are chosen and adopted and accepted
18:28and redeemed and enlightened.
18:30And then the Bible says we have an inheritance waiting for us,
18:33Ephesians 1, 11, and 12.
18:35In him also we have obtained an inheritance,
18:37being predestined according to the purpose of him
18:39who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
18:42that we who first trusted in Christ
18:45should be to the praise of his glory.
18:47Now, listen, if you're a follower of Christ,
18:50you have an inheritance that is reserved especially for you.
18:54Because you are mature sons and daughters in God's family,
18:58because you have been adopted into his family
19:00and you have been accepted by the Father,
19:02you have all the rights and privileges
19:04that come with that legal status.
19:06And one of those rights and privileges
19:08is an inheritance that is a special blessing
19:11each of us will receive one day.
19:14Let me give you a little thought.
19:16If you are putting all your resources
19:19in what you have here today,
19:22you are gradually moving away from your treasure.
19:26If you put your resources in the things of God,
19:28you are gradually moving toward your reward.
19:32You gotta make a choice.
19:34What is that inheritance?
19:36What does he mean when he says we're gonna get an inheritance?
19:38I don't really understand that completely,
19:40but the apostle Peter offered us a little more
19:43in terms of a description.
19:45He said,
19:46"'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
19:49who according to his abundant mercy
19:51has begotten us again to a living hope
19:54through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
19:57to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled
20:01that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.'"
20:05In other words, Peter says,
20:08you are a Christian and God has a special reward,
20:12a special inheritance for you in heaven.
20:14Notice how he describes it.
20:15It's incorruptible, it's undefiled,
20:17and it doesn't fade away.
20:19It isn't subject to inflation, praise the Lord.
20:24Whatever the nature of that may be,
20:25it's more wonderful than anything you can imagine.
20:28It's more grand than anything you can possibly
20:30write down on a sheet of paper.
20:32And then number seven is we are sealed.
20:35"'In him you also trusted after you heard the word of truth,
20:38the gospel of salvation, in whom also,
20:41having believed, you were sealed
20:42with the Holy Spirit of promise.'"
20:44What does that mean, we were sealed?
20:46The Bible says this.
20:48When you become a Christian,
20:50a number of things happen at that moment.
20:52One of them is that the Holy Spirit comes to live within you,
20:56comes to live within your heart, not your heart muscle,
20:58but the heart of who you are, the real you,
21:01your personality, your spirit, your soul.
21:05The Holy Spirit comes to indwell you.
21:06When the Holy Spirit comes to live within you,
21:09that Holy Spirit serves as a seal that you are God's.
21:14He is the guarantee that tells you,
21:16no matter what is happening in your life,
21:17things are gonna be okay because God is with you, he's in you.
21:21And the best way I can explain that
21:23is what happens when you send a piece of registered mail.
21:26When you go to the post office and you fill out a form
21:28and give them the letter and then they stamp a seal
21:30on that letter so that nobody can open it
21:32without the recipient knowing what happened,
21:34that seal provides a guarantee
21:36for the authenticity of the letter.
21:38The Bible says the Holy Spirit is the guarantee
21:41that what God promised from the past,
21:43he's gonna fulfill in the future.
21:45How do I know?
21:46The Bible says the Holy Spirit lives in my heart.
21:48How do I know the Holy Spirit lives in my heart?
21:51Because the Bible says he witnesses with my spirit
21:55that I am a child of God.
21:56And so, the Bible tells us one of the blessings we get
21:58when we become a Christian is the guarantee
22:00that everything that God promised to us, he will fulfill.
22:03We are Christians, the Holy Spirit is the seal
22:07because we have the Holy Spirit, we know that one day
22:08everything he says is true is going to happen.
22:12As followers of Jesus, we are chosen, adopted,
22:15accepted, redeemed, enlightened, given an inheritance,
22:19sealed, and now finally, we are secure.
22:22Verse 14, the guarantee of our inheritance
22:25until the redemption of the purchased possession
22:28to the praise of his glory.
22:31Some older translations of Scripture
22:33replace the word guarantee with the word earnest.
22:36Do you ever hear of earnest money?
22:37Do you know what earnest money is?
22:38When you go to buy a piece of real estate,
22:40you put down some earnest money
22:42so that you're not just messing with them
22:43and they're not wasting their time.
22:45Usually, it's enough to be painful if you lose it.
22:48So, earnest money is the idea that you're gonna buy
22:51this house that you've seen.
22:53By making that payment, you are showing the seller
22:55that your offer is serious.
22:57You are putting your money where your mouth is.
23:01In a similar way, the Holy Spirit is the earnest money
23:03for our inheritance.
23:05He has provided part of our inheritance
23:07so that we can rest assured and rest secured
23:09in his promise that he is going to take us one day
23:13to be with the Father.
23:15How are we to say what we need to say
23:18to all these blessings?
23:20Ephesians 1, 3, and 14 says it this way,
23:22All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
23:26who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing
23:29in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.
23:32He did this so we would praise and glorify him.
23:38It was a sad day in the Williams household
23:39when they learned their neighbor, Ken Watson,
23:42had passed away.
23:44Ken's death wasn't a surprise.
23:45He was 87.
23:47He suffered a lot of setbacks in his health.
23:50But Owen Williams and his wife knew that Ken's passing
23:53would be especially difficult for their young daughter, Katie.
23:56You see, Katie was only two years old at the time,
23:59and she had a special connection with Mr. Watson.
24:02In fact, he treated her more like a granddaughter
24:04than a neighbor, made special effort to deliver
24:07Christmas presents every year, and his passing would leave
24:11a really empty place not only within their neighborhood
24:13and street, but in little Katie's heart as well.
24:16Thankfully, that's not the end of the story.
24:18It turns out Ken Watson had one more trick up his sleeve
24:21before he died, or to say it more accurately,
24:24one more gift to give.
24:26Shortly after Ken's death, his daughter stopped by
24:29with a large bag.
24:30She said it was for Katie.
24:33Inside were 14 gifts Ken had purchased for his friend,
24:3714 wrapped gifts to bless the young girl
24:40for the next 14 Christmases.
24:45He said, I kept reaching into the bag
24:47and pulling out another gift.
24:49Seemed like they would never end, 14 of them in that bag.
24:54The gifts that Ken Watson left Katie Williams
24:56were something special indeed.
24:58But the gifts God has showered on us are infinitely better.
25:02Upon his death, Mr. Watson delivered 14 gifts
25:06to last for 14 years.
25:09But God the Father has lavished us with every spiritual
25:11blessings that span the horizon of time from eternity past
25:16to the eternity of the future and right into our lives today.
25:20So, we have been blessed even more than little Katie.
25:24We have been blessed with eternal blessings
25:26chronicled for us in the book of Ephesians.
