Sunderland business owner describes 'terrifying' moment rioters targeted his bar

Rob Davison describes how rioters threw missiles at his bar and tried to break through the doors.

00:00As you can see from last night's disturbance, we've got a bit of a presence in and around the centre of St Paul's today.

00:07There would be some debate if you can also see the number of these two fishmakers as well.

00:23Okay then Rob, I know you were down here last night because this is your business here,

00:26so just tell me a bit about what happened and what the scene's like.

00:29They were horrific. We had like 350 people outside trying to get into the police station next door.

00:39The staff were terrified. I got a phone call off my manager.

00:43I come down to find like 350 people in the street, smashing the police station up,

00:50setting the citizens' advice next door.

00:52We had to evacuate the bar and the customers were scared.

00:57The staff were scared. We had to evacuate out the back for the safety of the staff and the customers.

01:04And not just your business, but also the disorders broke out in general here in Sunderland.

01:09You're from Sunderland. How do you feel about what took place last night?

01:12I'm ashamed. I'm ashamed of the people of Sunderland who acted with this,

01:17and I'm ashamed if they are from Sunderland.

01:21On the other side, you said quite a lot of people were down here this morning helping with the clear-up effort, etc.?

01:25Yes, which I was very, very pleased for.

01:27I was so proud of Sunderland for the people who's come and turned out to help clean up the streets.
