00:00Hey guys, welcome back to the channel.
00:01In this video, we're talking about how to get started
00:03on YouTube using just your iPhone.
00:05And so this video is shot entirely on my iPhone XS Max.
00:08And I'm gonna be sharing a few tips and tricks,
00:10but hopefully trying to make the point
00:11that if you're thinking of starting a YouTube channel
00:13or getting into filming and stuff,
00:14you don't need to wait for a fancy camera
00:17or save up for this, that, and the other.
00:19All you need is your iPhone or Android phone
00:22if you're one of those heathens.
00:23And you can just get started pretty much from now on,
00:25provided you keep a few things in mind.
00:27So yeah, in this video,
00:28we're gonna be talking about five things.
00:30We're gonna be talking about video quality
00:31using a certain app,
00:33audio quality using external microphones,
00:35lighting, framing, and additional lenses
00:38and kind of the equipment
00:39that you might like to add on top of it.
00:41But really, you can just get started using just your iPhone
00:43and hopefully I'll be making that point
00:44throughout this video.
00:46So let's start with video quality.
00:47And that's obviously the most important thing.
00:49Although some people say audio quality is more important,
00:51but let's ignore that.
00:51Video quality, you don't really get
00:53from the default iPhone camera app.
00:55And for most, I don't know much about Android phones,
00:57but I suspect their default camera apps
00:59are not great either.
01:00The app that you wanna use,
01:01the app that most people recommend,
01:02that I would recommend is called Filmic Pro.
01:04And the great thing about this app
01:06is that you can manually control
01:08a lot of the camera settings.
01:09So there's a few different settings
01:11that we wanna change when we open up the app.
01:13And the main one is the frame rate.
01:15Normally with iPhone videos,
01:16they film in 30 frames per second,
01:18but it's either 24 or 25 frames per second
01:21that look more cinematic.
01:22Like 30 is just a little bit too smooth
01:24and looks kind of like iPhone video,
01:26which isn't really the vibe that we wanna be going for,
01:28unless you wanna go for that vibe,
01:29in which case, you know, you do you.
01:30But at the moment, I'm shooting in 25 frames per second,
01:33and that is the same frame rate
01:34that I shoot with my fancy cameras and stuff.
01:36And hopefully that looks quite reasonable.
01:38Secondly, we wanna be adjusting the resolution
01:40and the bit rate.
01:41And this sounds complicated,
01:41but basically we wanna film in 4K resolution
01:43because we might as well,
01:44and most modern phones offer that.
01:46And then we wanna crank up the bit rate
01:48to as high as it possibly can be.
01:50On iPhones, this is called Filmic Extreme.
01:52I think on Android, it's like 100 megabits per second,
01:55something along those lines
01:56that basically means there's more information encoded,
01:59but it takes up a bigger file size.
02:00High file size, better quality,
02:01that's the way that I would recommend going personally.
02:03And then just a few other things.
02:04You wanna set your white balance
02:05so that it doesn't vary massively.
02:07And you wanna change your shutter speed
02:09to one over 50th of a second.
02:11And there's this kind of rule with filmmaking
02:13that if your frame rate is 25,
02:15you want your shutter to be double that,
02:16so one over 50.
02:18This is called the 180 degree rule.
02:20Essentially, that gives you the best amount
02:22of the most cinematic motion blur.
02:24When I'm moving my hands like this,
02:25I tend to talk a lot with my hands,
02:27this should hopefully look semi-natural, fairly natural.
02:30Whereas if I cranked up the shutter speed really high,
02:32like one over 200, it would look a lot more choppy
02:34because it's not quite what we're used to seeing.
02:36This all sounds complicated,
02:37but essentially once you've got these settings set once,
02:40you can just save a preset on Filmic Pro,
02:42then you never have to touch them again.
02:43And there's tons and tons of tutorials on YouTube
02:46where they show you in depth how to get Filmic Pro
02:49and get the right settings for your liking.
02:51But yeah, most important thing for decent video quality
02:54is to not use a default camera app,
02:55but to use something like Filmic Pro instead,
02:57and hopefully that'll make a big difference
02:58to video quality.
03:00Okay, now let's talk about audio.
03:01And arguably audio is even more important than video quality
03:04because people will sit through a low quality video
03:07if the audio is good.
03:08But if you have the best quality video in the world,
03:10but your audio is crap,
03:11then no one's gonna wanna watch your video.
03:13And I've gotta be honest,
03:14I have kind of been cheating a little bit in this video
03:15in that I've been recording with my iPhone,
03:17but I've actually been externally recording audio
03:19using this Rode NTG4 mic
03:21connected to an external audio recorder.
03:24But now I'm gonna show you what it sounds like
03:26using just the iPhone,
03:27just so, you know, if you don't have this sort of setup,
03:29you don't really need it.
03:30So this is what the audio from the iPhone sounds like
03:32just on its own.
03:33Hopefully you'll hear the difference
03:35between this expensive audio setup and the iPhone recording,
03:38but hopefully you'll see that actually,
03:39if you were just getting started on YouTube
03:41with just your phone,
03:42this actually wouldn't be too bad.
03:44It wouldn't be the sort of audio quality
03:45that people would be like,
03:46oh God, that's garbage,
03:47I'm gonna turn it off immediately.
03:48But luckily there is kind of a middle ground
03:50between standard iPhone with nothing attached
03:52and this kind of fancy audio setup.
03:54And that is using a small microphone
03:56like the Rode VideoMicro.
03:58And that sets you back by about 30 or $40.
04:00So I'm gonna plug that in
04:02and we'll show you what the audio sounds like
04:04from the Rode VideoMicro.
04:05So at the moment I have to stop this recording
04:07and unplug my phone.
04:10Okay, so let's get rid of that lightning cable.
04:11And I'm using the Rode VideoMicro about 50, $40,
04:15something like that from Amazon.
04:17And I've connected it to the iPhone
04:18using the lightning to headphone adapter
04:20that comes with the phone.
04:21And this is like this other Rode cable
04:23that costs about $7.
04:24So for about $50, we've got this microphone connected
04:27and I've got it mounted to this random phone mount
04:30that you can get off Amazon for about 10 quid or $10
04:33or whatever your currency is.
04:35So now let's hear what it sounds like with this microphone.
04:37Okay, so this is a test of the Rode VideoMicro
04:39attached to the iPhone.
04:40And you can hopefully see that this hopefully
04:42sounds a little bit better than default iPhone microphone,
04:45but hopefully it doesn't sound quite as good
04:47as the audio coming directly from this audio recorder.
04:50All right, now let's talk about lighting.
04:52And as you can see, I'm sitting next
04:53to this massive ass window,
04:54which is providing some pretty decent natural lighting.
04:56So even if you don't have the money to spend
04:59on a lighting setup or lighting rig or whatever,
05:01you can just sit next to a window
05:02and hopefully this looks pretty reasonable.
05:04Then if I wanted to, I could get my kind of fancy
05:07Aputure 120D Mark II lights.
05:10And I could kind of bring that in, swing that around
05:12so it's pointing at me.
05:13I could turn it on using the remote control,
05:15wherever it is.
05:16And then yeah, if I wanted to,
05:17I could actually change the ISO setting on FiLMiC Pro
05:19so that it dims the lightness a bit.
05:21But you'll see this doesn't actually make
05:22that much difference to the video.
05:23Like lighting is super important,
05:25but just something like standing next to a big window
05:28has quite a good effect.
05:30So let's see if I can kind of dim this light
05:31so that it looks a bit better.
05:33Something like that.
05:34So this is with light, this is without light.
05:36Honestly, I don't know.
05:37It doesn't really make that much difference.
05:38So it's big window, lighting.
05:41Lighting is pretty much sorted.
05:42And again, lighting doesn't need to be one of those things.
05:44If you watch, for example, my behind the scenes video
05:47or Peter McKinnon's video showing how he makes his videos,
05:49it can look quite intimidating
05:50seeing these big expensive light domes and stuff.
05:54But really, you don't need that to get started.
05:56And over time, yeah,
05:57it's definitely worth investing in a light.
05:58And I'm really glad I spent the $1,000
06:00that it costs for this particular light.
06:01But you get pretty decent results
06:03just sitting next to a window.
06:05So that's absolutely fine.
06:06Okay, fourthly, let's talk about framing the shot.
06:08And I don't know if you can see,
06:09but I've got my iPhone connected to my MacBook
06:12and I'm just using QuickTime Player
06:14and QuickTime Player is allowing me
06:15to mimic what's on my iPhone screen.
06:17I think using the selfie camera on the iPhone
06:19gives you less good picture quality.
06:21So I'm using the normal camera,
06:22but to see what I'm filming,
06:23I've got it connected to my laptop
06:25and therefore I don't need anything fancy like a monitor.
06:28I've got a small HD monitor that costs 500 pounds
06:31that attaches to a camera.
06:32This is basically doing the exact same thing.
06:34Most of us have a laptop.
06:35Most of us have some kind of device
06:36we can attach our phones to.
06:37And so you can mirror the screen
06:38and monitor yourself that way.
06:40And therefore you can get all of the framing that you want.
06:42You don't have to be kind of off to the side
06:44because you couldn't see yourself.
06:45Yeah, this is a very easy way to do the framing.
06:47And then also in terms of extra gear.
06:48So over here I've got the iPhone
06:51sitting on this random no brand phone tripod thing.
06:56I'll put a few links to Amazon in the video description.
06:58The important thing about that
06:59is that it's got a cold shoe mount on the top,
07:01which means this Rode VideoMicro can attach nicely to it.
07:05So yeah, this is the microphone.
07:07It's tiny and it just screws nicely onto this mount,
07:10which is a very easy way to attach it to the phone.
07:12And then if I were to vlog, for example,
07:14I could just take the setup, take it off the tripod,
07:16and I'd have a vlog setup with a decent audio
07:19because I've got the microphone connected to it.
07:20And then that's just connected to a standard tripod.
07:22I just happen to have these lying around.
07:24This is the Joby GorillaPod head.
07:25Again, it doesn't really matter what I'm using.
07:26The point is that you can connect any tripod to your phone,
07:30provided you have one of these phone mounts.
07:32And it's a very easy thing to get
07:33that you can buy for a few dollars off Amazon.
07:35Like if you want, you can go really ghetto
07:37and end up just kind of propping up your phone
07:39on a stack of textbooks or anything like that.
07:41But you know, if you're serious about starting YouTube,
07:42my recommendation is that you get started
07:44with just your phone and over time,
07:46you can then add stuff to it so that it's never an excuse
07:48that, oh, I can't afford camera gear as an excuse
07:51as to why you're not starting a YouTube channel.
07:52It's just like an internal battle of, oh, okay,
07:54I need to get over the fear of looking foolish.
07:56I need to get over my fear of public speaking.
07:57I'm just gonna do it
07:58because starting a YouTube channel is great
07:59and leads to lots of good things happening in life.
08:02And finally, I just want to talk about extra lenses
08:04that you can use.
08:04So this is an extra wide angle lens
08:06that I got from Sandmarc.
08:07They very kindly sent it to me.
08:08It's not sponsored, but yeah,
08:09they did send me the lenses to review.
08:11And this is quite nice
08:12because if you attach it to the iPhone,
08:14like I'm gonna do now,
08:14then what it does once it's attached
08:16is that it makes the angle more wide.
08:18So if we go back to the iPhone shot,
08:20you'll see that this is now a much wider shot.
08:22I look further back.
08:23You can now see the microphone
08:24and I'm just kind of monitoring this
08:25on the laptop behind me.
08:26So what I would do in this case
08:27is I would move the table closer.
08:29Hopefully then you won't see all of the crap that's behind
08:32and we can just see the iPad.
08:33I move a little closer.
08:34I move this microphone a bit more up,
08:36make sure it stays out of the frame,
08:38but still gets decent audio quality
08:41because it's close enough to my mouth.
08:42Get this camera out of the way.
08:44Get this corporation tax thing out of the way.
08:46You'll see, I have to change up the framing slightly,
08:48but some people prefer this sort of more
08:50wide angle way of filming.
08:52And actually, you know,
08:52I'm not a huge fan of being so far away from the camera.
08:55So what I normally do is I use a wide angle lens,
08:57even on my normal camera,
08:58and then I sit quite close to it.
09:00And that has the benefit that if you're not using
09:02an external audio recorder like I am,
09:03then you're closer to something like the iPhone
09:05or the Rode VideoMicro,
09:06which means you get slightly better audio quality
09:08because you're closer to the camera
09:10because you're using a wide angle lens.
09:12So, I mean, Sandmarc have loads of other lenses as well.
09:14They also sent me their macro lens and a tele lens
09:16and the anamorphic lens,
09:17which I'm going to play around with at some point.
09:19But yeah, if you want to go for a slightly different look
09:22than the standard iPhone framing,
09:23you can use like an external lens or something,
09:25just kind of screw it onto your phone and then it works.
09:27But yeah, hopefully the main point I've made on this video
09:29is that you don't actually need a lot
09:31to start a YouTube channel and to start filming.
09:32Like you can just do everything with just your iPhone.
09:34Yeah, the audio is not going to sound that amazing,
09:36but it's perfect to get started.
09:38And you can always upgrade later on to the Rode VideoMicro
09:41and you can then spend an extra $20 getting a tripod.
09:43Then if you really want,
09:44you can spend $50 on a lighting setup.
09:46And over time you build up your YouTube thing.
09:48And then eventually when, if you really want to,
09:50you can like a graduate to getting a camera.
09:52But I've spoken to a lot of people
09:54because people messaging me via Instagram and stuff
09:56and asking for advice
09:57for things like starting YouTube channels.
09:59And a distressing amount of them have said stuff like,
10:01oh, I'd love to start a YouTube channel,
10:02but I don't have the money for a camera.
10:05Even though they've got like the latest iPhone
10:06or like a Google Pixel or like a Galaxy S8, S9, S10,
10:09whatever, you know, all modern phones are capable
10:11of filming in very, very good quality.
10:13They all have reasonable audio as well.
10:14And you can always upgrade audio if you really feel like it.
10:16But yeah, hopefully this video gave you a little bit
10:19of a taste, a bit of a flavour
10:20about how to get started on YouTube using just your iPhone.
10:23If you liked the video, please give it a thumbs up.
10:25Over here, we've also got a few videos about, you know,
10:28in this Creator Diaries series,
10:29where I talk about the behind the scenes of my own setup,
10:31including all the camera gear and stuff.
10:33So have a look at that if you feel like it.
10:34But yeah, thanks for watching
10:35and I'll see you in the next video.
10:36Bye-bye.
