00:00A junior minister in Singapore said a law against fake news enacted in 2019 has helped
00:10maintain trust in the media.
00:13Janil Puducherry said Singaporeans trust the news that the government is putting out, but
00:19they also trust the media platforms.
00:22Puducherry said the Protection of Online Falsehoods and Manipulations Act requires that corrections
00:28are displayed alongside reports containing false information.
00:33The law was extensively used during Singapore's 2020 general election and the COVID-19 pandemic
00:39when correction notices were issued to several opposition figures.
00:44Puducherry said countries that do not take similar approaches to misinformation will
00:48see falling levels of trust in the media and journalists.
00:53Malaysia previously had an anti-fake news act that was criticised for being overly broad
00:59until its repeal in 2019.
