Dan Brady (Mickey Rooney), a young auto mechanic in California, "borrows" $20 ($253 today) from the cash register at his job to pay for a date with blonde femme fatale Vera Novak (Jeanne Cagney), who works at a nearby diner.[3]
In a scheme to return the pilfered $20, Dan decides to pay only one dollar as a down payment at a jewelry store for a $100 wristwatch ($1,266 today), a deal that requires him to sign a sales contract to buy the watch over time with regular installment payments. He then promptly goes to a pawnshop where he hocks the watch for $30 cash ($380 today), using most of that money to cover the missing funds at the garage. However, the next day Dan is tracked down by an investigator who informs him that he has violated the installment contract by pawning a watch he does not legally own. The investigator tells him that if he does not pay the jewelry store the full $100 for the watch within 24 hours, he will be charged with grand larceny, a crime punishable by three years in state prison. After unsuccessfully applying for a payday loan and attempting to use his car as collateral for another loan, a desperate Dan resorts to mugging a tipsy bar patron known for carrying large amounts of cash.

00:01:30Fine.
00:01:31Buzz, how's the fishing these days?
00:01:33It's not very good around here, but there's a big run of marlin up Tijuana.
00:01:36Yeah?
00:01:37Taking a party down there Sunday morning.
00:01:39I don't like this guy. He gets paid to go fishing while we slave over a hot carburetor.
00:01:42You said it.
00:01:43Hey Dan, we got room for one more. Why don't you come along?
00:01:46When are you going to get back?
00:01:47Late Monday night.
00:01:48Monday night? That lets me out. I couldn't get Monday off.
00:01:51You could get away if you wanted to.
00:01:53You just don't want to miss spending Sunday with the girlfriend.
00:01:55Helen?
00:01:56No, they busted up a couple of months ago.
00:01:58By the way, she called you again this morning.
00:02:00She did?
00:02:01I told her you wasn't in for the 19th time.
00:02:04Good, good.
00:02:05How do you like this guy?
00:02:06There's a dame I trade my right arm for and he gives it the run around.
00:02:09Maybe he's found a new dish.
00:02:10I spent four years in the Navy fighting for freedom. Why get anchored down now?
00:02:13Besides, she was getting too serious.
00:02:15Your wedding belt, huh?
00:02:16She's getting louder and louder.
00:02:18I figured she's too nice to string along.
00:02:20But she won't take no for an answer.
00:02:22Some dames are sure hard to shake off.
00:02:24I once knew a blonde.
00:02:26And her name was Margie.
00:02:28How'd you know?
00:02:29We've heard the story a dozen times.
00:02:31A couple of dozen times.
00:02:33Hey, we better be getting back or old man Mackey will blow a fuse.
00:02:36Right. Here, that's for you.
00:02:41Hey.
00:02:50I'm Babe.

00:03:34Don't forget your change.
00:03:37I happen to have my autograph book here with me.
00:03:39Name and address?
00:03:42I'm afraid you've made a mistake.
00:03:44I don't come with the merchants much.
00:03:46Oh, now don't be like that.
00:03:48I think you're wonderful.
00:03:50Anything wrong in that?
00:03:51No, but...
00:03:52Well, then how about you and me tonight, huh?

00:04:04They're playing over at the music bar on the pier.
00:04:06I thought I'd pick you up after nine-thirty.
00:04:08We'll go over and give them a listen, okay?
00:04:11Okay.
00:04:13See you tonight.

00:04:40Well, I've got to figure out some way to get some Guitars
00:04:42or how else am I going to take that gorgeous creature out to the music bar?
00:04:46Why don't you ask old man Mackey for an advance?
00:04:49Oh, that old guy, he wouldn't give me the sweat off his glasses.
00:04:52Yeah, he's sure a mean old buzzard.
00:04:55Hey, buzzard, I'm glad you said that.
00:04:57Buzz Larson owes me twenty bucks.
00:04:59Why don't you call him up down at the dock?
00:05:01My friend, you have just read my mind.

00:06:04You're all alike.
00:06:05You don't care what you do with my money.
00:06:07You think I own stock in the power company?
00:06:21So she said to me,
00:06:22I want to speak to the supervisor.
00:06:24So I said,
00:06:25one moment, please.

00:15:41Who's Dave?
00:15:43Old fella I used to know.
00:15:45Told me the names of all the stars.
00:15:47You know, I never saw a star until I was 16.
00:15:50How come?
00:15:55I was raised in Steel Town, West Virginia,
00:15:57and you couldn't see the sky for the smoke.
00:15:59So, I ran away.
00:16:02Funny, I ran away from home, too.
00:16:04That was a long, long time ago.
00:16:09I, uh...
00:16:10What'd you do after you ran away from home?
00:16:12Oh, I was a carhop for a while,
00:16:14waitress in a beer joint,
00:16:16clerked in a 5 and 10,
00:16:18cashier in a coffee shop.
00:16:21It's not what you run away to,
00:16:22it's what you run away from.
00:16:23I ran away from a farm
00:16:25and the belt the old man used to whip me with.
00:16:27That old man was sure free with that belt.
00:16:29Oh, I ran away from a lot of things.
00:16:31Ma getting drunk all the time
00:16:33and never having any decent clothes to wear.
00:16:36And the boarders,
00:16:38especially those boarders.
00:16:40They wouldn't leave me alone.
00:16:42Must have been tough.
00:16:45I learned to handle them after a while.
00:16:49Think you could handle me?
00:16:51Sure.
00:16:56I can handle you easy.
00:16:58Yeah.
00:17:08Hello, is Buzz there?
00:17:11He what?

00:17:15Why won't he be back?
00:17:18No, no, never mind.
00:17:21All right, I'll call him later. Bye.
00:17:29The bookkeeper.
00:17:31What's he doing here two days ahead of time?
00:17:33If he finds out I'm short,
00:17:34he'll tell the old man.
00:17:36The old man's mean enough
00:17:37to send a guy to jail just for laughs.
00:17:39I gotta get 20 bucks in a hurry.
00:17:45How about that salary loan outfit?
00:17:47The one that's always yacking on the radio.
00:17:49Walk in with an honest face,
00:17:50walk out with a pocket full of dough.
00:17:53I must have walked in with the wrong face.
00:17:55Couple of days to check my references.
00:17:57I haven't got any references,
00:17:58and I haven't got a couple of days.
00:18:22I'll be back.
00:18:47Can I have it for a dollar down,
00:18:48like it says in the window?
00:18:49As soon as we check up on your credit.
00:18:51I can't wait that long.
00:18:52Oh, wait a minute.
00:18:53You got a charge account in town?
00:18:56No, I...
00:18:58Yes, yes, I have, at the hub.
00:19:00At the hub where I buy my clothes.
00:19:02I'll tell you what I'll do.
00:19:03I'll call their credit manager,
00:19:04and if he says you're okay,
00:19:05you can take the watch right with you.
00:19:07Okay?
00:19:08Now, let's get it on
00:19:09and show you what it looks like.
00:19:16How much could you let me have on this ticker?
00:19:22$30 do you any good?
00:19:24$30 will be fine.
00:19:34Any better than last week?
00:19:36I don't know yet, Mr. Mackey.
00:19:37I'll let you know.
00:19:38Well, about that other matter,
00:19:39see if you can't find a way
00:19:40to make it a business deduction.
00:19:42I'll think about it, Mr. Mackey.
00:19:52Hi, George.
00:19:53Hi, Dan.
00:19:55You're, uh...
00:19:57You're kind of early this week, aren't you?
00:19:59The old man sent for me.
00:20:00He had some tax reports for me to get out.
00:20:02Oh.
00:20:04And I figured as long as I was here,
00:20:06I'd get my Thursday work done.
00:20:10Say, Dan,
00:20:12I just checked the register,
00:20:13and it's $20 short.
00:20:17You know,
00:20:18it's $20 short.
00:20:22Well, maybe you could have made a mistake or something.
00:20:24No, I checked it twice.
00:20:28Well, you know,
00:20:29sometimes the money gets stuck in the money sack down there.
00:20:38Yeah.
00:20:39Yeah, here it is.
00:20:43But I looked in the money sack.
00:20:45It just didn't look good enough.
00:20:49Yeah.
00:21:01Can I do anything for you, sir?
00:21:02You're Dan Brady.
00:21:03Yeah.
00:21:10I'm Moriarty,
00:21:11California Investigation Service.
00:21:14You bought a watch yesterday at Jay's Jewelers, didn't you?
00:21:18Yeah, I did.
00:21:19I took it straight to Uncle John's and hocked it.
00:21:23What if I did?
00:21:24Don't play dumb.
00:21:25Why would you buy a watch for $100
00:21:27and hock it the same day for $30?
00:21:30Well, I...
00:21:31Because you don't intend to pay the $100.
00:21:32That's why.
00:21:33Now, wait a minute.
00:21:34Don't holler before you're hurt, pal.
00:21:35I signed up to pay that thing $10 a month,
00:21:37and when the month's up, I'll pay him the $10.
00:21:39Oh, no, you won't.
00:21:40Because Jay Jewelers don't think you're gonna be here
00:21:42when the month's up.
00:21:43They think you're gonna skip town.
00:21:45So you'll pay up now,
00:21:46or Jay's gonna swear out a warrant.
00:21:49Warrant?
00:21:51Warrant for what?
00:21:52I'll give it to you in words of one syllable, my friend.
00:21:55When you buy something on the installment plan,
00:21:57you sign what they call a conditional sales contract.
00:21:59Yeah?
00:22:00This contract says that the watch,
00:22:02the radio, or the easy chair
00:22:04don't belong to you until you make your last payment.
00:22:07It says that if you sell, mortgage, or hock
00:22:09something you don't own yet,
00:22:11you're guilty of larceny.
00:22:13And a $100 watch is grand larceny.
00:22:16That's three years in the penitentiary in this state.
00:22:19Oh, you...
00:22:21You're kidding me, aren't you?
00:22:22Kidding? Me?
00:22:24Not in your life.
00:22:26You signed a contract like this, didn't you?
00:22:29Yeah, I did.
00:22:30Read what it says right there.
00:22:34Debt is payable...
00:22:35Within 24 hours, or charges will be brought.
00:22:40Well, look, I...
00:22:41I can't get a hold of $100, something just like that, right away.
00:22:44Well, you better dig it up somewhere.
00:22:53Because if you don't pay up by noon tomorrow,
00:22:55a little man's gonna call on you with a big warrant.
00:23:05That's all, brother.
00:23:06Until noon tomorrow.
00:23:12Hey, Chuck.
00:23:13Yeah?
00:23:15What does a guy do when he...
00:23:17When he needs lots of dough?
00:23:19Me? I usually hock my watch.
00:23:25That's a great idea.
00:23:33Maybe I can get some dough on my jalopy.
00:23:35I wonder how much they'll give me for it.
00:23:37I'll get it.
00:23:38Maybe I can get some dough on my jalopy.
00:23:40I wonder how much they'll give me for it.
00:23:51No, Dice, what good is $300?
00:23:53I still owe the finance company $350.
00:24:09By half past eight, I'd tried everything I could think of,
00:24:11and I still hadn't raised $100.
00:24:13I hadn't raised a buck and a quarter.
00:24:16So I threw in the towel and headed for Phil's place
00:24:18to knock off a couple of beers.
00:24:32The longer I sat on that silly stool,
00:24:33the more I felt like slugging somebody.
00:24:35I gotta socked old man Mackey for being so tight.
00:24:38And the guy in the jewelry store
00:24:39for sending Moriarty after me.
00:24:42With a fella standing next to me at the bar
00:24:44because he had money in his pocket and I didn't.
00:24:48I'm going to see how old you are, Phil.
00:24:50360 shorty.
00:24:52Okay, I gotta get home before the old lady
00:24:55chops my ears off.
00:24:57Haven't you got something smaller?
00:24:58This one's a 50.
00:25:00How's this one?
00:25:02That's another 50.
00:25:03Here, let me look.
00:25:05There's a five right there on top.
00:25:07Oh, this one.
00:25:09Yeah.
00:25:10Just keep the change.
00:25:12I gotta get home before the old lady slaps me down.
00:25:18Who?
00:25:20Your wife.
00:25:21Oh, yeah.
00:25:22Yeah, the old lady.
00:25:23Good night, Phil.
00:25:25So long, shorty.
00:25:26How's a joker like that rate all that dough?
00:25:28Shorty, he runs the bingo games
00:25:29until the suckers keep him happy.
00:25:31Another beer, Danny?
00:25:33No.
00:25:35It's all Phil.
00:25:43Hi, Romaine.
00:25:44How are things?
00:25:45Hi, shorty.
00:25:46How's the drink?
00:25:47Okay.
00:25:53Oh, you're a nice boy.
00:25:54Let me tell you a fortune.
00:25:56Maybe you've got big ones.
00:25:59Oh, don't fall on your face, you jerk.
00:26:02I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:28I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:29I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:30I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:31I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:32I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:33I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:34I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:35I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:36I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:37I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:38I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:39I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:40I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:41I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:42I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:43I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:44I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:45I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:46I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:47I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:48I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:49I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:50I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:51I'll tell you a fortune.
00:26:52All right, reach.
00:26:59Reach.
00:27:00Come on.
00:27:01I'm not kidding you.
00:27:02Let's go.
00:27:03All right, come on.
00:27:04In the back.
00:27:05Down on the floor.
00:27:06Down on the floor. Hurry up.
00:27:37Oh, there's one more.
00:27:56Hello, Billy.
00:27:57Hiya, Chuck.
00:27:58Long time, no see.
00:28:00Hiya, Billy.
00:28:01Hello.
00:28:01Gee, Dad, it's wonderful to see you.
00:28:03Oh, what are we waiting for, huh?
00:28:05I never saw you run after anybody before.
00:28:07Oh, Millie, please.
00:28:09Hey, take it easy.
00:28:10What's the rush?
00:28:11Nobody's chasing us.
00:28:14Yeah, that's right.
00:28:16Nobody's chasing us.
00:28:17We've got all night, haven't we?
00:28:19Sure we have.
00:28:20Well, maybe you've got all night.
00:28:21Me and Helen, we only got five minutes till the last show.
00:28:25Uh, Loger's at General.
00:28:27Millie, I almost forgot.
00:28:28I've already seen the picture.
00:28:30I saw it when we were downtown at the palace.
00:28:32But you said, uh, you know.
00:28:35Oh, I got it.
00:28:37You wouldn't mind if I went alone, would you?
00:28:39No, I wouldn't mind.
00:28:40I didn't think so.
00:28:41Goodbye, then.
00:28:42Goodbye.
00:28:44Gee, Dan, this is like old times.
00:28:47Yeah.
00:28:48Let's go on the roller coaster and the chutes and the dipper.
00:28:51Let's go on everything.
00:28:53All right.
00:29:01My knees were really shaking back there.
00:29:03I thought the cops would bust out of that alley any minute.
00:29:06But now I'm in the clear.
00:29:08With heavy dough in my pocket, how I can pay off that jewelry
00:29:10store and have enough left over to show Vera the biggest
00:29:12time she ever had.
00:29:14Vera.
00:29:15I've got a date with her tonight.
00:29:17I promised to meet her at Nick's place.
00:29:26Uh, what time is it?
00:29:29It's 25 to 10.
00:29:31Holy smoke.
00:29:32I promised to meet a guy a half hour ago.
00:29:34I'm kind of late.
00:29:35I'm sorry, kid.
00:29:36Can I walk you to the bus or something?
00:29:38Oh, you don't have to, Dan.
00:29:40I can get home by myself.
00:29:42Well, I'll give you a ring, and we'll get together sometime soon.
00:29:46I'll see you later, Charlie.
00:29:55Cheers.
00:29:56Don't come back.
00:29:57I won my $50.
00:29:59Do me a favor, will you?
00:30:01You're dead.
00:30:04Let me go.
00:30:05Take your dirty hands off of her.
00:30:07Take your hands off of her.
00:30:08That's what I want.
00:30:09Don't you hear me?
00:30:11I don't like to be pushed around.
00:30:14I just don't.
00:30:15I got it.
00:30:16You're a rat.
00:30:18I'm trying to.
00:30:20Now, what's all this about $50?
00:30:22It wasn't a loan.
00:30:23It was a present.
00:30:25I don't want you taking $50 from a guy like this ever.
00:30:29Let's get out of here.
00:30:49Let's get out of here.
00:31:20Wait a minute.
00:31:21Wait a minute.
00:31:22Two more of these.
00:31:25When are you going to tell me what we're celebrating?
00:31:27Are we supposed to be celebrating something?
00:31:29Got to be.
00:31:30Last night you were spending dollar bills, and tonight it's 50s.
00:31:34I won it in a craft game.
00:31:38You sure it wasn't bingo?
00:31:40Two champagne cocktails.
00:31:44What do you mean, bingo?
00:31:46Just thought you might have won it from Shorty McCain.
00:31:49I'll give you that idea.
00:31:52Maybe it was Evelyn.
00:31:55Evelyn?
00:31:56Who's Evelyn?
00:31:57Bookkeeper in the movie house.
00:32:00She saw Shorty lose it in the auto park.
00:32:04What do you know about this?
00:32:08She just came into Nick's place to phone the cops.
00:32:10Cops?
00:32:11What'd she say?
00:32:12They're a long time no see.
00:32:14How about a dance?
00:32:16No thanks.
00:32:17Your boyfriend won't mind.
00:32:18No thanks.
00:32:19Can I buy you both a drink?
00:32:20No.
00:32:21Isn't there anything I can do for you?
00:32:22Yeah, yeah, blow.
00:32:24You heard her.
00:32:30What'd she say?
00:32:31Danny.
00:32:35She said she saw the guy who did it with a handkerchief around his face.
00:32:41He took Shorty for his bankroll.
00:32:44Didn't he?
00:32:48How do I know?
00:32:50Just thought you might have heard about it.
00:32:54Anyhow, if it was me, and I'd won any $50 bills,
00:32:59I wouldn't go spending them around the pier.
00:33:02Yeah?
00:33:03Why not?
00:33:05Because everyone around here knows that Shorty carries fifties.
00:33:10Look, I don't know any guy named Shorty,
00:33:13and I won this dough in a crap game, see?
00:33:15Oh, now, sure you did.
00:33:17Sure you did, Danny.
00:33:19Let's spend some of it, huh?
00:33:21Yeah.
00:33:22That's more like it.
00:33:25Only...
00:33:28We won't spend the fifties.
00:33:30Will we?
00:33:32We won't spend the fifties, will we?
00:33:38No.
00:33:41No, we won't spend the fifties.
00:33:5140, 60, 80, 100. There's $100.
00:33:54Here's your dough.
00:33:57And there's your contract.
00:33:59So long, Brady.
00:34:00So long.
00:34:08Mack A. Motor.
00:34:10Who?
00:34:12This is him speaking.
00:34:16How'd I like to what?
00:34:19How'd you like to take a big jump off the pier?
00:34:21No, I don't like to take a jump off the pier.
00:34:24But you better come and see me, or else...
00:34:26Or else what?
00:34:28Or else something is going to happen to you.
00:34:32To you, Danny boy.
00:34:59What's on your mind? And it better be good.
00:35:01Oh, it's very good.
00:35:03You know, last night a prizefighter, a big prizefighter, he left something here.
00:35:07I picked it up.
00:35:09Picked it up where you left it.
00:35:11It's got a knot in it. You know, like you use for a mask or something.
00:35:15I don't know what you're talking about.
00:35:17No?
00:35:18No, but I'll take it just for luck.
00:35:20Sure, sure. You keep my handkerchief.
00:35:22I keep your handkerchief.
00:35:24Same knot, only your handkerchief got blood on it.
00:35:27So what?
00:35:29Did you ever hear anybody say money talks?
00:35:32Fifty dollar bills, they talk very loud.
00:35:35It's big bills.
00:35:37What do they say?
00:35:39It says, Shorty McCabe, Shorty McCabe.
00:35:42Yeah, that's what it says, Shorty McCabe.
00:35:44What's your angle? What are you trying to tell me?
00:35:46I'm telling you about a holdup.
00:35:49You see, Evelyn from the picture show, she...
00:35:52She saw the man get rubbed, and she got a blister.
00:35:56And she got a very good look at the guy who did it.
00:35:59She thinks she can identify him very easy.
00:36:02Nice girl. You want me to call her?
00:36:04Wait a minute. Put it down.
00:36:07If you're so sure that I was mixed up in this thing, why don't you call the cops?
00:36:10Cops? Oh, no.
00:36:12I'm a businessman.
00:36:14See, Danny boy, I think I can do business with you very nice.
00:36:18What kind of business do you think you could do with me?
00:36:20Automobile business.
00:36:22You get me a new car, and I don't know nothing.
00:36:25Nothing. Just nothing.
00:36:28A new car?
00:36:31I couldn't get a new car if I wanted to.
00:36:33Oh, you can get a new car, seeing where you got the $50 bill.
00:36:38Are you nuts?
00:36:40Nuts? Me?
00:36:42No, I don't think so.
00:36:48Davis. Yes?
00:36:51Here are the plates for the green sedan.
00:36:54Get this ready for delivery in the morning.
00:36:56Yes, sir.
00:36:58Oh, and Davis, don't let me catch you putting in 10 gallons of gas this time.
00:37:03Six is plenty.
00:37:05Yes, sir.
00:37:08There goes the last new car we'll have this month.
00:37:11I've got to get it tonight or blow town tomorrow.
00:37:14Even if I blow town, they'll probably catch up with me.
00:37:17Oh, boy, am I in a mess.
00:37:21Hey, Dan. Dan, I, uh...
00:37:23I was just thinking, if you're not going to take Helen out anymore,
00:37:26I thought maybe I'd give her a call sometime.
00:37:29Yeah, sure. Why don't you do that, Jack?
00:38:24Hey, uh... Hey, fella.
00:38:27This thing is stuck back here.
00:38:30Let me see. What is that?
00:38:33What's happening?
00:38:35It's the green sedan, the second on California Street.
00:38:38It's got license plates on it.
00:38:41It's got license plates on it.
00:38:43It's got license plates on it.
00:38:46It's got license plates on it.
00:38:48It's got license plates on it.
00:38:50It's got license plates on it.
00:38:53That's fine. Well, I promised you I'd know nothing.
00:38:56Absolutely nothing.
00:38:58Wait a minute. I want the handkerchief.
00:39:00Here you are.
00:39:04You let go of this, and I'll let go of this.
00:39:06All right. You let go of it, and I'll let go of it.
00:39:08What are you going to do with the car?
00:39:10That's none of your business, Danny boy.
00:39:13Well, I'll tell you. I sold it to a gambler friend of mine.
00:39:16He's driving it home to Nevada.
00:39:18I can see that he does. I don't want it around town here.
00:39:20It's hardly giving him a chance.
00:39:22Don't worry. He's going home tonight.
00:39:24No slip-ups.
00:39:26Come on.
00:39:52Brady.
00:39:54Yeah?
00:39:56Do you know who took that green sedan?
00:39:59Yeah.
00:40:01You do?
00:40:03Yeah. I could tell the police about it right this minute.
00:40:06But I don't know whether that would help me get back the car or not.
00:40:09You understand?
00:40:11No, I, uh...
00:40:13I don't.
00:40:15I'm not interested in sending anybody to jail, Brady.
00:40:18I'm interested in getting back that car.
00:40:23I don't know why you're telling me all this.
00:40:24Oh, yes, you do.
00:40:26An employee of this firm stole that sedan.
00:40:29And I happen to know who it is because he was seen.
00:40:34If you're trying to pinch this thing on me, Mr...
00:40:36Now, don't try to run any bluffs, Brady.
00:40:38How many times do I have to tell you?
00:40:40You don't have to tell me anything.
00:40:42All you have to do is to get that car down here,
00:40:44parked out in front, before I get down tomorrow.
00:40:47But if I haven't got it, what if I don't know where it is?
00:40:50But you did have it, and you do know where it is.
00:40:52I don't want it anymore!
00:40:57If you can't return the car, you'll have to pay for it.
00:41:00$3,000.
00:41:03$3,000?
00:41:05What? I'd only list for $1,950.
00:41:08You don't think I'd sell to you at least.
00:41:10$3,000. Where would a guy like me get any dough like that?
00:41:13Almost everybody's got a family someplace.
00:41:15Why, folks who go to a lot of trouble to keep a man out of jail.
00:41:18Not mine.
00:41:20I'll give you 24 hours, Brady.
00:41:23I want the money, or I want the automobile.
00:41:26Now let me give you some warning.
00:41:28Don't you try to leave town.
00:41:43$3,000.
00:41:45There might as well have been $3 million.
00:41:47I tried to remember who could have seen me in the green sedan.
00:41:50I should have known I had it except Nick.
00:41:52Nick. Maybe that was who told the old man.
00:41:55Nick hated me. He'd cut my throat for a nickel.
00:42:01Hey. What's the matter with you tonight?
00:42:04You look like you lost your last friend.
00:42:07How'd you like to go to Texas, honey, right now, right away?
00:42:10Are you kidding?
00:42:11I'm on the level.
00:42:13Uh-huh.
00:42:15What's the matter with California?
00:42:17Weather getting too warm?
00:42:21I'll tell you about it later.
00:42:25So I'm in a worse jam than ever.
00:42:27My boss is going to throw me in the brig if I don't get a hold of $3,000, or else.
00:42:32Where am I going to get a hold of $3,000?
00:42:37I know where there's $3,000 or $4,000.
00:42:40Yeah. First National Bank.
00:42:42No, not in any bank.
00:42:44But we can get at it. We can get at it easy.
00:42:47All you have to do is to break up the deal.
00:42:50There's a little catch lock on a rickety old door.
00:42:53You can pry it open with your fingernails.
00:42:55Not with my fingernails.
00:42:57I'm in too deep already.
00:43:09This is the end of the month.
00:43:11That's when Nick keeps the money overnight.
00:43:13Nick? You mean Nick at the Penny Arcade?
00:43:15Uh-huh.
00:43:17There'll be thousands of dollars there tonight.
00:43:20What would Nick be doing with that kind of dough?
00:43:23He charges people for cashing checks.
00:43:25Today's a big payday.
00:43:27A lot of them will bring their checks in in the morning before the bank's open.
00:43:31And he doesn't even have his safe. He hides it.
00:43:37I know where.
00:43:42It was Nick who got me into all this.
00:43:44Let Nick get you out.
00:43:46Then you won't have to go to Texas.
00:43:49You can stay here with me.
00:43:53Wait a minute.
00:43:54What's the matter?
00:43:56There's someone watching us from the house.
00:44:04It's only old Snoop.
00:44:06Who?
00:44:07The landlady. She's always looking for trouble.
00:44:10You know, I had a news program on the air the other night,
00:44:12and she busted in and tried to tell me I had a man in my room.
00:44:16She's still watching us.
00:44:20Well, let's give her something to watch.
00:44:28Stay out here and look out for the watchman.
00:44:30If I see him coming, I'll honk the horn.
00:44:32Blow it three times so I'll know it's you.
00:44:34All right, Danny.
00:44:36Good luck.
00:44:45Good luck.
00:45:15Come on.
00:45:45Come on.
00:46:15Come on.
00:46:42Stop or I'll shoot!
00:46:45Stop or I'll shoot!
00:47:15Stop or I'll shoot!
00:47:45Stop or I'll shoot!
00:48:16Let's get out of here, quick!
00:48:29Did you get the money?
00:48:30Yeah.
00:48:31I heard shooting. What happened?
00:48:32The night watchman saw me.
00:48:34Well, you took a big chance tonight, and you got away with it.
00:48:37I'm sorry.
00:48:38I'm sorry.
00:48:39I'm sorry.
00:48:40I'm sorry.
00:48:41I'm sorry.
00:48:42I'm sorry.
00:48:43I'm sorry.
00:48:44You took a big chance tonight, and you got away with it.
00:48:46You ought to be tickled to death.
00:48:48Well, I'm not.
00:48:49I feel like I'm being shoved into a corner, and if I don't get out soon, it'll be too late.
00:48:53Maybe it's too late already.
00:48:54But you can stop worrying.
00:48:56You're out right now. You've got the money in your pocket to pay your way out.
00:48:59Yeah. Yeah, that's right. I've got the money.
00:49:01That'll square everything, won't it?
00:49:03I wonder how much there is.
00:49:05Feels like a lot.
00:49:07Let's take it up to my room and count it.
00:49:10All right.
00:49:14Come on.
00:49:28Pull down those shades.
00:49:40Five hundred in each of these packages.
00:49:42Four, five, six, seven.
00:49:45That's $3,500.
00:49:4920, 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110.
00:49:56That's $3,610.
00:49:59Yeah, that's a lot of dough.
00:50:01That's more money than I could make in a year working every day.
00:50:06What's the coppers?
00:50:09Just like I thought.
00:50:11What's the big idea? Who said you can come in?
00:50:13I have rules in this house. This is a clean, respectable place.
00:50:16Well, you've got no right in here. Now get out!
00:50:19I don't allow no men in the rooms. Not in my house.
00:50:22And I'm not leaving until he goes.
00:50:27You're leaving right now.
00:50:29Maybe you'd rather I'd call the cops.
00:50:31Why, you old battle-axe!
00:50:33Shut it out, will you? We don't want any trouble, especially now.
00:50:35Maybe I ought to go.
00:50:37You think you can take care of everything all right?
00:50:40Oh. Yeah, sure, Danny, don't worry.
00:50:44I can take care of everything.
00:50:47I'll call you in the morning.
00:50:54I don't want any of your kind around here.
00:50:57And when your rent's up, you can move out.
00:51:00Scram!
00:51:03Hello, is Vera Noe back there?
00:51:05Hey, you're gonna wear that thing out today.
00:51:07Oh, this is her...
00:51:08Why don't you forget about it? She's just a matter of days.
00:51:10Will you do me a favor and shut up, please?
00:51:12Sorry!
00:51:13Oh, this is her day off. She wouldn't be at the restaurant.
00:51:15Look, when she comes in, would you tell her to call Dan Brady at Mackey Motor?
00:51:18It's very important. As soon as she comes in.
00:51:20All right. Thank you.
00:51:25Well, Brady.
00:51:26Well?
00:51:27I didn't see that green sedan when I came down this morning.
00:51:30No, you didn't, did you?
00:51:32Does that mean you can't get it back?
00:51:33It can mean anything you want it to mean.
00:51:35Well, then I assume you intend to pay for the car instead.
00:51:38Oh, do you?
00:51:39How long will it take you to get the money?
00:51:42I've got it already.
00:51:43You have?
00:51:44Yeah.
00:51:45Fine. Why don't you come right into the office?
00:51:47Well, I haven't got it on me.
00:51:49I have to pick it up tonight after work. I can bring it in the morning.
00:51:52Why wait till tomorrow? I'll come right back after dinner tonight.
00:51:55You can see me in the office then.
00:51:59It might be... it might be 10 o'clock or so.
00:52:01It's all right, Brady.
00:52:03That's perfect then. All right.
00:52:05See you tonight.
00:52:10Mack A. Mortar.
00:52:12Hello, Vera. Where have you been?
00:52:16Did you take care of everything all right?
00:52:20Good.
00:52:21Well, that's swell, baby. Look, I'll...
00:52:23I'll be over and see you tonight as soon as I get off work, right after 6 o'clock.
00:52:27Goodbye.
00:52:33Goodbye.
00:52:45Is that you, Danny?
00:52:46Yeah.
00:52:47Come right in.
00:52:57Isn't it beautiful, Danny?
00:53:00Oh, Danny. Danny.
00:53:02I'd never have had it if it hadn't been for you.
00:53:04Where'd you get the coat?
00:53:05I bought it.
00:53:06Bought it with what?
00:53:07With my share of the money.
00:53:10Here's your end.
00:53:12$1,800.
00:53:14You took half that dough and bought a coat with it?
00:53:16Not just a coat, Danny. A mink coat.
00:53:18You sold me out.
00:53:19Oh, now, just a minute.
00:53:21Who told you where the money was? Who told you how to get it?
00:53:23Isn't that worth half?
00:53:24I can't use half. I need 3,000.
00:53:26Oh, don't be a chump. Nobody expects to get everything you ask for.
00:53:29Make him an offer. That's what I did.
00:53:31What you did?
00:53:32Sure. This coat cost $2,000.
00:53:35I told the furry 1,800 was all I had and he could take it or leave it.
00:53:38He took it.
00:53:41Offer this to the old man. Tell him it's all you could raise.
00:53:44I bet anything he takes it.
00:54:01Well, Brady, I'm glad you're doing the sensible thing.
00:54:32There's only 1,800 here.
00:54:34That's right.
00:54:35Where's the rest of it?
00:54:36I couldn't dig it up.
00:54:38Take it or leave it.
00:54:41I'll take it.
00:54:53Get me the police station.
00:54:55What's the idea?
00:54:56I told you I'd forget about the whole thing for $3,000,
00:55:00but not for 1,800.
00:55:02Now, if you've got the rest of it on you,
00:55:04you'd better pay me now before it's too late.
00:55:06Why, you...
00:55:07Come on!
00:55:09Get him away with it!
00:55:11Get him away with it!
00:55:13Get him away with it!
00:55:15Get him away with it!
00:55:17Get him away with it!
00:55:19Yes!
00:55:30Get him away with it!
00:56:00Get him away with it!
00:56:31Get up!
00:56:44Dan! Hey, Danny boy.
00:56:46Hi Chuck.
00:56:48Danny, l missed your quitting time tonight.
00:56:50l wanted to say goodbye.
00:56:51Uh, goodbye?
00:56:53Yeah, l quit today.
00:56:54I'm through with that screwball nagger.
00:56:56l told you what he tried to pull on me, didn't I?
00:56:58No, you didn't.
00:56:59to call me in his office and try to tell me I swiped it.
00:57:02Said what?
00:57:03Like I'm telling you.
00:57:04He said I stole the car.
00:57:05Gave me a lot of hooey about somebody seeing me drive away.
00:57:08Wait a minute.
00:57:09I'm all mixed up.
00:57:10Let me get this thing straight.
00:57:11He said that he saw you drive that car away?
00:57:12And that ain't all.
00:57:13Yesterday he called me in his office
00:57:14and he had some screwy idea I should get 3,000 bucks
00:57:16for my old man to pay for the sedan.
00:57:18Now, how nuts can a guy get?
00:57:19He didn't know anything at all.
00:57:20He was just fishing around, putting up pressure on everybody,
00:57:22hoping something would turn up.
00:57:23Yeah.
00:57:24I should have let him have one talking to me like that.
00:57:26Some of these days, that old man is
00:57:27going to get his neck in a sling.
00:57:30Neck in a sling?
00:57:34Yeah.
00:57:35Yeah, he had it coming, though, didn't he?
00:57:37Always trying to outsmart everybody,
00:57:38but he got too smart.
00:57:40Yeah, he got so smart, he got his neck in a sling.
00:57:43Ha!
00:57:44Ha!
00:57:45Ha!
00:57:46Oh!
00:57:47Oh!
00:57:48Danny, Danny, what is it?
00:57:49What's the matter?
00:57:54I, uh, I have a date here.
00:57:57I'm late already.
00:57:58I'm late already.
00:58:09Come in.
00:58:11Well, how'd it go?
00:58:12Did he take the money?
00:58:13Yeah, yeah, he took it.
00:58:14I told you he would.
00:58:15Pack your things.
00:58:16We got to get out of here.
00:58:17What are you talking about?
00:58:18He tried to call the cops.
00:58:19I had to stop him.
00:58:20Stop him?
00:58:22How?
00:58:23Never mind.
00:58:24Pack your things.
00:58:25Stop clowning, Danny.
00:58:26How?
00:58:27He tried to call the cops.
00:58:28I had to take the phone away from him.
00:58:29He pulled a gun on me.
00:58:30I, I strangled him.
00:58:32On the level?
00:58:33On the level.
00:58:34Look, they won't find him until in the morning.
00:58:35By that time, we'll be halfway to Texas, baby.
00:58:37You'll be halfway to Texas, not me.
00:58:39But the cops will be after us.
00:58:41They won't be after me.
00:58:42I don't have to run away.
00:58:44Look, we're in this thing together.
00:58:45You told me to offer him the dough.
00:58:46I didn't tell you to kill him.
00:58:48And I wasn't there when it happened.
00:58:50So why should I stick my neck out now?
00:58:52What kind of a dame are you?
00:58:53The kind that watches out for herself.
00:58:56If I didn't, who would?
00:58:58You don't care about anybody else, do you?
00:59:01Why, sure I do.
00:59:04I wouldn't want to see anything happen to you, Danny.
00:59:08Certainly wouldn't want to see the cops catch you.
00:59:11Don't you think you better get started to Texas?
00:59:14I'll, uh, I'll kiss you goodbye if you want me to.
00:59:19I wouldn't dirty my lips.
00:59:26One more flight.
00:59:42Miss Novak, some gentlemen to see you.
00:59:52You Vera Novak?
00:59:53So what if I am?
00:59:55I've got something for you.
00:59:57Yeah?
00:59:58What is it?
00:59:59A search warrant.
01:00:05See what she's got in her purse, Smitty.
01:00:06Right.
01:00:17You won't find him in there.
01:00:20I won't find who in there?
01:00:21You know who.
01:00:22Dan Brady.
01:00:23Oh, yeah.
01:00:24Dan Brady.
01:00:25Where will I find him?
01:00:27He's getting out of the state as fast as he can drive.
01:00:29Why aren't you getting out too?
01:00:30I didn't have any part of it.
01:00:32I didn't even know him.
01:00:33Didn't know who?
01:00:36Say, are you trying to make me look like a fool?
01:00:39Mackey, of course.
01:00:40Mackey?
01:00:41Which Mackey is that?
01:00:42Oh, the one that ran the automobile agency.
01:00:44Ran?
01:00:45Well, he can't keep on running it now that he's dead, can he?
01:00:48Dead?
01:00:49Who's dead?
01:00:50Mackey, of course.
01:00:51Brady killed him.
01:00:52The girl didn't have any part of it.
01:00:54Where did it happen?
01:00:55You know where.
01:00:56At the automobile...
01:00:59Say, are you trying to kid me?
01:01:02Sure.
01:01:04Maybe it's the other way around.
01:01:05Maybe you're trying to kid me.
01:01:07Why did you start spilling the minute I came in the door?
01:01:10Maybe it's because you wanted me to think your boyfriend had gone when he hadn't.
01:01:19How do I know he isn't still here?
01:01:24Why didn't you look under the couch?
01:01:26I don't suppose he'd be that near.
01:01:32I didn't think he'd be that close.
01:01:38Smitty.
01:01:40Watch it.
01:01:45Ah-ha.
01:01:49Ah-ha-ha.
01:01:51Where does a dame like you get a coat like this?
01:01:53I bought that coat with my own money.
01:01:54You take your dirty hands off it.
01:01:56I'll bet you did.
01:01:57I can prove it.
01:01:58I got a receipt.
01:02:00Here.
01:02:01Here.
01:02:04Alaska Ferriers, 917 Main Street.
01:02:06Received at Vera Novak, $1,800.
01:02:10Well, looks like Nick had the right hunch, Smitty.
01:02:12Nick?
01:02:13What do you suppose brought us here?
01:02:15Last night somebody stole $3,600 of Nick's money, and today you paid $1,800 for a fur coat.
01:02:20Looks like you and your boyfriend split Nick's bankroll right down the middle.
01:02:23I don't know what you're talking about.
01:02:24Give me back my coat.
01:02:26Don't worry about your coat, sister.
01:02:27We'll take it right with us.
01:02:28Bring her along, Smitty, and we'll check on Mackie on the way down to the station.
01:02:33Serves you right, your hussy.
01:02:35You're all dead.
01:02:43What are you doing here?
01:03:05I could see you were in trouble, so I got rid of Chuck and came down.
01:03:07Get yourself right back home.
01:03:08I've got to get out of here quick.
01:03:09What is it, dear?
01:03:10Was it the hole up in the auto part?
01:03:12What do you know about that hole up?
01:03:13I saw you hiding in the alley that night, the night that Milly and I walked by.
01:03:17I couldn't see your features, but I knew that it was you.
01:03:20But then I thought maybe I was imagining things.
01:03:22You know how it is when you love someone.
01:03:23You think you see them 50 times a day.
01:03:26But a minute later you called my name, and I turned around, and there you were at the head of the alley.
01:03:31Then we heard about the hole up in the auto part, and I saw the look on your face.
01:03:35Is that all?
01:03:36That's all.
01:03:37Well, why don't you get out and let me get started?
01:03:39I saw the police come out of the house with her.
01:03:41Are they after you, too?
01:03:42What if they are?
01:03:43What business is of yours?
01:03:44That I can help you.
01:03:45I can tell them you were with me all evening, and you'll have an alibi.
01:03:48I don't get it.
01:03:49Why do you want to help me?
01:03:50When things were going my way, all I ever gave you was a runaround.
01:03:52Now that I'm in a jam, why don't you get smart and stay away from me?
01:03:55I've been away from you too long, and it isn't any good.
01:03:58Don't you think I know I'm dumb to throw myself at a guy that doesn't want me?
01:04:01Don't you think I know I'm a fool to stand on a street corner for an hour just waiting for you to come out of a door?
01:04:06I know all that, but I can't help it.
01:04:08I fell in love with you the first time I saw you, Ted.
01:04:12I'll drive you home.
01:04:17It's less than a week since Helen waited for me outside the garage.
01:04:20Have you been dancing lately, she said, and all I had to do was say,
01:04:23swell idea, let's go out tonight.
01:04:25If I'd have said that, I wouldn't be running away from the cops tonight
01:04:28with a murder hanging over my head.
01:04:31No, dear, no.
01:04:36Hey, buddy, pull over to the curb.
01:05:01Let's take a look at your driver's license.
01:05:07Brady, is that your name?
01:05:10Yes, sir.
01:05:12You went through a boulevard stop back there.
01:05:16Will you sign this?
01:05:18Yes.
01:05:25Take it easy.
01:05:27Yeah.
01:05:31Helen, you kept me from making an awful mistake.
01:05:33Well, if you'll only take me with you, I can help you. I know I can.
01:05:36Let me lay it on the line.
01:05:38I'm going to have to keep running. I'm going to have to keep running all my life
01:05:41because when they catch up with me, they're going to hang me.
01:05:43Hang you?
01:05:44For murder, I...
01:05:46I killed a man tonight.
01:05:49Start the car, then tell me how it happened.
01:05:55Telling her about it wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be.
01:05:57And it was Helen who came up with the idea of Mexico.
01:06:00We decided to head for an inland town like Hermosillo, where not many tourists come.
01:06:04A man could be safe for 50 years in a place like that.
01:06:09What's that?
01:06:11That's goodbye to Mexico.
01:06:24Oh, it's the main bearing.
01:06:27It'll take a couple of days to fix.
01:06:29Well, then we'll have to hitchhike.
01:06:30And get there by morning? We'd never make it.
01:06:31We have to make it.
01:06:35Oh, Helen, I've had the right girl all the time and was too dumb to know about it.
01:06:38If we ever get out of this thing...
01:06:40We're going to get out of it.
01:06:41Yeah, but how?
01:06:43I've got an idea.
01:06:44This is the baby that's going to get us there.
01:06:46Well, what are you going to do with that?
01:06:48Get us a lift, honey. A lift straight through to Mexico.
01:06:50Come on. Careful.
01:06:58Come on.
01:07:09Get in quick.
01:07:10Don't try any funny stuff. I don't want to hurt you.
01:07:12All right. When the signal changes, get going.
01:07:14Turn south on the highway. Keep her under 50 and don't go through any red lights.
01:07:16You understand me?
01:07:28May I ask where we're going?
01:07:30Just keep driving. You'll find out.
01:07:36I suppose you know what you're getting into.
01:07:38This isn't a car theft.
01:07:40It's kidnapping.
01:07:41I don't want to ask you. I don't want your advice. You hear me?
01:07:43Well, I happen to be a lawyer.
01:07:45Maybe...
01:07:46Maybe you can keep your mouth shut, too.
01:07:47No, Dan. Let him talk. He might be able to help us.
01:07:50I don't think so.
01:07:51I don't think so.
01:07:52I don't think so.
01:07:53I don't think so.
01:07:54I don't think so.
01:07:55Let him talk. He might be able to help.
01:07:57She's right.
01:07:58Whatever it is you're running away from, this is worse.
01:08:01Kidnapping is a capital offense.
01:08:04They can hang you for it.
01:08:07What's the difference?
01:08:10They're going to hang me anyway.
01:08:13I just killed a man.
01:08:18How about the girl?
01:08:19You leave her out of it. She had nothing to do with it. Do you understand me?
01:08:22I believe that.
01:08:23But will the police?
01:08:25Look, son.
01:08:26I can see this girl means something to you.
01:08:29Why don't you tell me what happened?
01:08:31For her sake.
01:08:32She needs a lawyer, sooner or later.
01:08:39Maybe you're right.
01:08:41If you're sure, you could keep her in the clear.
01:08:44If she's innocent,
01:08:46you tell me the whole story.
01:08:48And it's the truth.
01:08:50Truth?
01:08:51Truth.
01:08:54I don't know where to begin.
01:08:56Start at the beginning.
01:09:00The guy was a lawyer.
01:09:02Maybe he could help Helen.
01:09:03So I told him the whole story.
01:09:05I told him about sticking up shorty in the auto park
01:09:07and about breaking into the Penny Arcade in the middle of the night.
01:09:09I told him about beer and Nick and old man Mackey.
01:09:12I told him everything that had happened.
01:09:14From the very beginning to the end.
01:09:18I see.
01:09:19Now, the first thing you want to know is where the girl stands.
01:09:23That's right.
01:09:24She's in the clear.
01:09:25They can't touch her.
01:09:27But how about Dan?
01:09:28You said maybe it wouldn't be murder.
01:09:30It might be manslaughter.
01:09:31No, it's murder, all right.
01:09:34I might be able to get him off with second degree.
01:09:37They'd have a hard time proving premeditation.
01:09:39Second degree?
01:09:40That'd mean life, wouldn't it?
01:09:42It could.
01:09:44I'd rather they hung me.
01:09:46There's one discrepancy in your story.
01:09:49It's worth checking up on because if we get the right answer,
01:09:52murder's out.
01:09:53Manslaughter, too.
01:09:55What do you mean?
01:09:57How do you know he's dead?
01:10:00He's dead, that's all.
01:10:02His head fell over on the desk like he was dead.
01:10:05It would do that if he were unconscious.
01:10:07Did you feel his pulse?
01:10:09Or listen for a heartbeat?
01:10:11No, I didn't.
01:10:13Men don't die easily.
01:10:15They take a lot of killing.
01:10:18I can imagine Mackey sitting in a police station right now,
01:10:21telling the desk man what a narrow escape he had.
01:10:25If he only was alive, Helen, if he only was alive,
01:10:28I'd give myself up to the first cop that came along.
01:10:31Here's an all-night restaurant.
01:10:33Why don't I use their phone, find out how Mackey is?
01:10:37Why don't you keep on driving, too?
01:10:38I'll tell you how Mackey is.
01:10:39He's dead, that's what, he's dead.
01:10:40Oh, but Dan, maybe he isn't.
01:10:42No, he is, I know he is.
01:10:43Listen to you, I didn't want to kill anybody.
01:10:45I don't want to kill you now,
01:10:46but if you try any more funny stuff,
01:10:48I'll blow a hole right through you.
01:10:51What day is this, Helen?
01:10:52It's Saturday.
01:10:54No, it isn't, it's Sunday morning.
01:10:57We still have a couple of hours before daylight.
01:10:59We can still make it.
01:11:01Turn this car around.
01:11:04Where are we going now?
01:11:06Remember Buzz Larson?
01:11:07Yeah.
01:11:08He's taking a fishing party way down past San Diego this morning.
01:11:10If we can get to the pier in time, I can go with him.
01:11:12To Mexico?
01:11:13Way past the Mexican border.
01:11:14Step on it, will you?
01:11:34I hope the boat is still here.
01:11:36Yeah.
01:11:37Yeah, there it is.
01:11:38Down there.
01:11:39We made it.
01:11:46We'd better hurry.
01:11:47I'd better hurry, not you.
01:11:48Oh, I'm going with you, Dan.
01:11:49I got this.
01:11:50No, there's no harbor below San Diego.
01:11:51I'll have to swim in from the sea.
01:11:52But I'm going with you, Dan.
01:11:53You've taken too many chances already.
01:11:54I've got to go on by myself from here on.
01:11:56I'll send for you as soon as I get a job.
01:11:57You know that, don't you, baby?
01:11:58Oh, yes, but, oh, Dan, don't go.
01:12:01I'm so afraid.
01:12:02There's nothing to be afraid of.
01:12:04Hey, wait a minute.
01:12:05Baby, there is.
01:12:06How are we going to keep this guy from going to the cops
01:12:07till after the boat pulls out of the harbor?
01:12:09I'll keep him away.
01:12:10Give me the gun.
01:12:11I wouldn't do that if I were you.
01:12:13Why not?
01:12:14I told you the girl was in the clear.
01:12:15She won't be if she takes that gun.
01:12:17After that, she'll be an accessory.
01:12:19Oh, don't listen to him, Dan.
01:12:20You've got to get away from here.
01:12:21No, he's right.
01:12:22You've got to be kept out of this.
01:12:23That's all that's important now.
01:12:24Would you take my word for something?
01:12:25I might.
01:12:26As a citizen, I have to notify the police.
01:12:29But as a friend, I don't have to hurry.
01:12:33Thanks.
01:12:38Would you do me another favor?
01:12:39If I can.
01:12:40Don't wait until the boat pulls out of the harbor.
01:12:42Leave now.
01:12:43I'll get her out of here right away.
01:12:44Thanks.
01:13:00And you haven't seen Brady since noon Monday?
01:13:02No, I haven't.
01:13:03And you haven't heard from him either?
01:13:05No.
01:13:06Wait a minute.
01:13:07I just remembered.
01:13:08He phoned me Monday afternoon.
01:13:10For any particular reason?
01:13:11Yeah.
01:13:12I owed him 20 bucks.
01:13:13He said he needed it.
01:13:14There's a news broadcast at 6 o'clock.
01:13:16I want to hear it before I talk with him.
01:13:18I'm not sure if it's a good idea.
01:13:20I don't think so.
01:13:21I don't think so.
01:13:22I don't think so.
01:13:23I don't think so.
01:13:24I don't think so.
01:13:25I don't think so.
01:13:26I don't think so.
01:13:27I don't think so.
01:13:28I want to hear it before I talk with the authorities.
01:13:30...regarding every airport, every bus depot, and every railroad station
01:13:33in a determined effort to prevent the killer's escape.
01:13:35At 4 o'clock this morning,
01:13:37officers threw roadblocks across both state highways
01:13:40and are now stopping all outbound cars.
01:13:42But at last reports, McDonald was still at large.
01:13:45McDonald?
01:13:46Meanwhile, police officers Truxton and Chandler are dead
01:13:49and Deputy Sheriff Alan P. Janus was taken to the emergency hospital
01:13:52with two bullets in his thigh.
01:13:54I'll get it a little louder.
01:13:55Closer to home, Beach City authorities
01:13:57are seeking garage mechanic Daniel Brady, 26,
01:14:00an employee of the Mackey Motor Company.
01:14:02Late yesterday evening, watchman Michael J. O'Brien,
01:14:05while making his regular nightly rounds,
01:14:07discovered the unconscious body of Oren Mackey,
01:14:09president of the automobile agency, lying in his office.
01:14:12Mackey regained consciousness at St. Mark's Hospital
01:14:14shortly after midnight and named Brady as his assailant.
01:14:17What?
01:14:18Then he's alive.
01:14:19Tommy, I want to watch yourself before you run into that kid.
01:14:22He's dangerous.
01:14:23What's dangerous about him?
01:14:25He's got Mackey's gun.
01:14:32Hey, Buzz!
01:14:33Buzz!
01:14:34Wait a minute!
01:14:35I'm coming!
01:14:37Hey, who's that fella there?
01:14:39That might be our boy.
01:14:40Let's take a look at him.
01:14:54You there!
01:14:55Stop!
01:15:00Hey, Brady!
01:15:01Watch yourself.
01:15:04Buzz!
01:15:06Wait a minute!
01:15:07Wait a minute!
01:15:23Buzz!
01:15:24Buzz!
01:15:25Buzz!
01:15:26Buzz!
01:15:27Buzz!
01:15:28Buzz!
01:15:29Buzz!
01:15:30Buzz!
01:15:31Buzz!
01:15:32Buzz!
01:15:33Buzz!
01:15:34Buzz!
01:15:35Buzz!
01:15:36Buzz!
01:15:37Buzz!
01:15:38Buzz!
01:15:39Buzz!
01:15:41Let's go.
01:15:57Watch yourself.
01:15:58He's shooting.
01:16:00I'll go after him.
01:16:01And you stay on top.
01:16:10I heard shooting!
01:16:32Did you see him?
01:16:42No.
01:16:43He didn't come through here.
01:16:44Look!
01:16:45What's that?
01:16:46I'm coming, Dan!
01:16:47It's all right!
01:16:48You didn't kill him, Dan!
01:16:49Hey!
01:16:50What's going on?
01:16:51What happened?
01:16:52Cops!
01:16:53They shot a cop!
01:16:54I heard him!
01:16:55I heard him!
01:16:56I heard him!
01:16:57I heard him!
01:16:58I heard him!
01:16:59I heard him!
01:17:00I heard him!
01:17:02I heard him on the radio!
01:17:03I heard him on the radio!
01:17:05Who?
01:17:06Oh, the guy that killed a couple of cops!
01:17:08Say, McGowan!
01:17:09Who was is?
01:17:10I don't know.
01:17:11They shot somebody!
01:17:12Yeah here here!
01:17:13I'm out!
01:17:14Stand back, folks.
01:17:15Give them room.
01:17:16There's the guy that got shot, right there!
01:17:20Where did you say your automobile was?
01:17:22On the pier, right over there.
01:17:23Fine, I'll put him in the car and I'll drive him straight to the hospital.
01:17:25And if that's all right with you?
01:17:26Yes, sir!
01:17:27You would save much time.
01:17:28Instead of waiting for the ambulance?
01:17:29I wouldn't have shot you when I got out there, would I?
01:17:30I thought you had a gun. What'd you do with it?
01:17:32I dropped it.
01:17:34What do you think they're gonna give me?
01:17:35Have you ever been in trouble before?
01:17:37No, no, never.
01:17:38Well, I think we can rule out the watch and the $20 bill.
01:17:41They'll probably charge you with the holdup,
01:17:43stealing the car, and breaking you to the penny arcade.
01:17:46That could add up to anything from one to ten years.
01:17:50But since you're a first offender,
01:17:51my guess is that it'll be nearer one than ten.
01:17:54Whatever it is, I'll take it.
01:17:57Whenever it is, I'll be waiting for you, Dan,
01:18:00if you want me to.
01:18:01You're a great gal, Helen.
01:18:03I love you, Dan.
01:18:05That goes both ways.
