The UN has fired nine staff members from its agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, after an internal investigation found they may have been involved in the Hamas-led 7 October attack against Israel. The UN secretary general’s office announced the move in a brief statement on Monday. It did not elaborate on the Unrwa staffers’ possible role in the attack. It said the nine included seven staffers who were fired previously over the claims.

00:00You've been asking for a long time about the Office of Internal Oversight Services work
00:17concerning the UN Relief and Works Agency.
00:21I can tell you the following.
00:24The Office of Internal Oversight Services has completed its investigation into 19 area
00:29staff members of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, UNRWA,
00:34regarding allegations of their involvement in the armed attacks of the 7th of October
00:382023 in southern Israel.
00:41OIOS made findings in relation to each of the 19 UNRWA staff members alleged to have
00:46been involved in the attacks.
00:48In one case, no evidence was obtained by OIOS to support the allegations of the staff members'
00:54involvement.
00:56While in nine other cases, the evidence obtained by OIOS was insufficient to support the staff
01:03members' involvement.
01:05With respect to these 10 cases, appropriate measures will be taken in due course in conformity
01:10with UNRWA regulations and rules.
01:13In respect to the remaining nine cases, the evidence obtained by OIOS indicated that the
01:19UNRWA staff members may have been involved in the armed attacks of the 7th of October
01:252023.
01:26The employment of these individuals will be terminated in the interests of the Agency.
01:33Turning to Gaza, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that ongoing
01:38bombardment and hostilities continue to kill, injure, and displace Palestinians, as well
01:43as damage and destroy the homes and infrastructure they rely on.
01:46In just the past 48 hours, three schools sheltering displaced people in Gaza City were reportedly
01:50hit, resulting in dozens of casualties, according to Palestinian Civil Defense.
01:56Partners on the ground are assessing the needs of people who fled and have been providing
01:59assistance.
02:00Meanwhile, a new analysis by the UN Satellite Center at UNASAT found that as of a month
02:05ago, 63% of structures in Gaza had been damaged.
02:09Yesterday, the Israeli military issued a new evacuation order for people living in areas
02:14of southern Khan Yunis and northern Rafah to immediately move westward to al-Mawassi.
02:20Our partners tracking population movements in Gaza estimate that more than 11,000 people
02:24had been living in these areas affected by this evacuation order.
02:30We call once again for all parties to the conflict to respect their obligations under
02:33international humanitarian law, including by taking constant care to spare civilians
02:38and civilian objects.
02:40This includes allowing civilians to leave for safer areas and allowing their return
02:43as soon as circumstances allow.
02:46People must be able to receive humanitarian assistance, whether they move or stay.
03:13Don't miss out.
