50-K students in Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan to benefit from DOST, PFST Roadshow Exhibit
Transcript
00:00A roadshow exhibit, care of a partnership between the Department of Science and Technology
00:05and the Philippine Foundation for Science and Tech is on a tour of far-flung locations
00:10in the BARMM to spark up interest from the youth and students to engage in studies of
00:15science, technology, engineering and math.
00:18The tour has generated quite a response, so much so, the LGU of Bonga'o, the capital
00:24of Tawi-Tawi, the country's southernmost province, seeks a permanent exhibit for its
00:29constituents.
00:30Our Rob Dacusad has more.
00:35Around 50,000 students in the provinces of Tawi-Tawi, Sulu and Basilan stand to benefit
00:40from this roadshow exhibit of the Department of Science and Technology in partnership with
00:44the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology.
00:47Under the program, science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM education are brought
00:53closer to students who live in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas or JIDA,
00:58such as the island provinces of Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslimindanao or BARMM.
01:03This is done by bringing the exhibit or STEM on the go where various STEM concepts are
01:07featured to spark and draw student interest and perhaps later on make it a career choice
01:12or means of livelihood.
01:14The program is also part of the Science Communication for Innovation Program of the Philippine Council
01:18for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development, or PESHERD of the
01:23UST.
01:24We go down to the elementary and to the teachers of the basic education is because it's foundational.
01:34You start young, para makuhan nila yung essence of the knowledge, na-embed natin ang science
01:42and technology, sa murang pag-i-isip ng mga bata, kung kaya lahat po sila ay kayang mag-contribute
01:49sa ikaw-unlad ng Pilipinas.
01:52She added, this is what they see in long-term benefits of going down to the grassroots.
01:57With the STEM on the go in the town of Bonggao in Tawitawi, the local government also wants
02:01a permanent exhibit of their own.
02:04According to the LGU, this will greatly help in their students' learning and educational
02:08development.
02:09It will really boost their learning, marami sila matutunan because of this, and lalong
02:15ma-i-enggan niyo yung mga bata sa mas mapapabilis yung learning nila.
02:20And at the same time, the teachers also will benefit.
02:26He hopes that next year, they will be able to provide funds for its implementation.
02:30But what is included in the exhibit?
02:31According to the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology, the implementing arm
02:35of the program, in addition to the standard package, they have different themes.
02:39Pero maraming nagri-request samin, sometimes on health, sometimes on other themes, na we
02:47also try to mix and match, pero ito mga basics na aming iniikot.
02:54Inivite po namin yung science, yung exhibits according to science, technology, engineering,
03:00and math.
03:01So that's why we came up with 25, and of course, we had the curriculum as our basis.
03:10And among the ones the students choose to try include the square wheel, which is different
03:14because of its four-sided shape, reaction time because it measures a person's response,
03:19and the Van de Graaff generator, which illustrates the concept of electricity.
03:22Ibigay natin ng opportunity yung mga students to learn about science in a new way, aside
03:29from being told about science, dito may experience nila yung science.
03:34So we believe that kapag na-experience mo yung actual effects ng science, it gives you
03:41yung lasting impression and positive moments of learning.
03:47This, he said, will help students to increase retention on particular topics.
03:51And at the same time, the exhibit helps make learning science fun, especially for the young
03:56ones.
03:57I'm Greg Legusad from the National TV Network, for a new and better Philippines.
