00:00Listen up, men. And, uh, women. And, uh, robots.
00:10I'm not going to talk to you about winning and losing.
00:12I'm not going to talk to you about math or science either.
00:14But I will tell you this.
00:16The hopes and dreams of thousands of BrainPop fans are riding on your shoulders.
00:20You need to win. But more importantly, you need to want to win.
00:24You need to want to want to know how to-
00:27You need to know how to play football.
00:30Like, all the rules and regulations.
00:33And you need me to tell you in less than three minutes?
00:36But I stayed up all night writing that cool speech.
00:43Oh, fine.
00:45American football is played on a rectangular field called a gridiron.
00:49It's exactly 100 yards long and 160 feet wide.
00:53Sorry, there's no metric system in football.
00:57The ball looks like this.
00:59The equipment looks like this.
01:01And the game is divided into four 15-minute quarters.
01:05Of course, a game takes a lot longer than an hour,
01:08since the clock stops during timeouts, penalties, injuries, incomplete passes,
01:14halftime, measurements, wardrobe malfunction-
01:17Okay, okay.
01:19Okay, okay.
01:20Each team puts 11 of its players on the field at once.
01:24One team starts out playing offense, and one team starts out playing defense.
01:29The goal of the offense is to move the ball down the field
01:32all the way into the opponent's end zone.
01:41The offense is led by a player called the quarterback,
01:44and there are a couple ways he can move the ball.
01:47He can pass it through the air and have a receiver run downfield to catch it.
01:51Or he can hand it off to a running back who will try to break away
01:54and run with it toward the end zone.
01:57It's up to the defense to stop them.
02:00Defensive players try to tackle whoever's carrying the ball
02:03and break up pass plans before the receiver can make a catch.
02:07Of course, the offense can only run a single play at one time.
02:11In football, these individual plays are called downs.
02:14A down usually ends when the player with the ball is tackled or forced out of bounds.
02:20The ball is placed at the spot where the last play stopped, and the next down begins.
02:25Each offense is given four downs to move the ball 10 yards.
02:38If they can make it, they get another four downs to move another 10 yards.
02:45If they can't make it, the other team's offense takes over.
02:51I'm getting there.
02:53If a team moves the ball all the way downfield into the opponent's end zone,
02:57they score a touchdown.
03:00That's worth six points.
03:03When a team scores a touchdown, they're allowed to try for an extra point
03:07by kicking the ball between the goal posts.
03:10Sometimes, a team gets close to the opponent's end zone but can't make it all the way in.
03:15Instead of just giving the ball to the other team, they can kick a field goal,
03:19and that's worth three points.
03:22After a team scores, it kicks the ball off to the other team and puts its defense on the field.
03:27Now it's the other team's chance to try and score.
03:30Well, you can try for a free-throw,
03:33but you can't kick a free-throw.
03:36Now it's the other team's chance to try and score.
03:39Well, you can try for a field goal from anywhere on the field,
03:42but it's a risky move if you're too far from the end zone,
03:45because if you miss, your opponent gets the ball.
03:48If one team's offense is having trouble moving the ball,
03:51it's safer for them to use their fourth down to punt the ball down the field.
03:56That way, when the other team's offense takes over,
03:59they'll have a long way to go before they can score.
04:03Um, before you go out there, there are about a trillion other things you need to know.
04:08Like, let's say an offensive player drops the ball as he's running with it.
04:13If a defensive player picks it up, his team gets to keep it and go on offense.
04:18That's called a fumble.
04:20If a defensive player catches a pass thrown by the quarterback,
04:23they get to keep it then, too.
04:25That's called an interception.
04:28So, when you're out there today, try not to do either of those things.
04:33Don't forget those guys in the stripy shirts.
04:35They're called the officials, and they enforce all the rules and regulations.
04:41Now let's go out there and get them.
04:43Clear eyes.
04:45Full hearts.
04:51Oh. Whoops.
