00:00In 20 years, pregnancy rates have doubled and more than 217,000 children were born thanks to the Procreation Medically Assisted, or PMA.
00:21To document it, the data collected by the National Register of the Medically Assisted Procreation, at the Institute of Health, became known for the 20th anniversary of the publication of Law 40 of 2004 on the official newspaper.
00:35In particular, the successes with heterological fertilization have also increased, a technique that allows those who could not have children to start a gestation, through the ovules of donors or at the seed of a donor.
00:46But what is this growth due to? We asked Antonio Pellisier, one of the world's leading reproduction experts, as well as president and founder of the Valencian Institute of Infertility, or IVI, a group that has 74 clinics distributed in 9 countries, with a strong presence in Italy.
01:05As far as the results are concerned, I consider that when I started, the possibility of remaining pregnant was 6%, today we are more than 65%. So it's not that it has doubled, it has multiplied by 10.
01:21The cause is improvement, especially in laboratory technology.
01:28If I make an attempt this month, as if we wanted to have a child at home, our possibility is this. If we go to have a child and insist on Christmas from today, our possibility arrives, in the event of a transfer, that is, the insertion of an embryo, in August, if it does not work, in September, if it does not work, in October, before Christmas, the lady is pregnant for sure.
01:56After donation, in fact, the percentage of success is a record. At the first attempt, there is a 77% probability of pregnancy, 83% in centers of excellence such as IVI, a percentage that rises to 99% at the third attempt. And as Pellisier underlines, the first in Europe to do heterological fertilization, the results obtained today in Italy are comparable to those in Spain.
02:21When I came here, the first question they asked me was whether they should go to Spain or stay with me. And I told them, look, I'm the founder. But we felt that Spain was better, that it was better in Spain. It was true, it was true, because Spain was at least 10 years ahead of Italy for a series of reasons of authorization.
02:44Today it is not like that, in Italy it is the same. The only difference between Spain and Italy is that I take the eggs from Spain, because in Italy they are not there, but the quality of the eggs, fresh and frozen, is exactly the same. So going to Spain makes no sense.
