05:29Now, I'm just gonna finish him up now.
05:30Good luck to both of you.
05:31Good luck.
05:37Clearly in the hearts of fans
05:39who love exciting boxing,
05:41Manny Pacquiao is number one
05:43in the world.
05:44But his last couple of performances
05:46have shown the beginnings
05:47of some possible deterioration.
05:49Is he number one
05:50pound for pound?
05:51He'll try to make a statement here.
05:58I mean, he's got a lot of power.
06:01Emanuel Stewart, if I were David Diaz,
06:03I would enter round 1
06:04looking to ask Manny Pacquiao one significant question.
06:08Did you train to take body punches?
06:10Are you ready to get hit in the gut?
06:12Well, I think that's what he should do, too.
06:14But, you know, looking at Manny,
06:16to me, I'm just amazed that this guy's fighting that
06:18for his fourth different weight division championship.
06:22And look at his body.
06:23I mean, usually when a smaller guy
06:24moves up to the division,
06:25like Durant, he looks perfect.
06:28Looked like he was born to be a lightweight.
06:29A spectacular athlete
06:31from beginning to this point of his career.
06:34Never once has he looked out of place
06:36in any weight class in which he's fought.
06:38The body just keeps getting better and better.
06:43And already Diaz begins to hit him in the body
06:46with the punches that are aimed at asking
06:48how well Pacquiao has trained,
06:50and already Pacquiao shows the speed advantage
06:53that makes him so special.
06:55And Pacquiao is expecting.
06:57But I look what Pacquiao sees,
06:58the tight defense of Diaz,
07:00which was covering up him on the top,
07:01but he's trying to find a way to come up
07:02between the gloves.
07:04But Tucker's sitting there with his left uppercut.
07:06See, he's just trying to right check him.
07:07He's very smart.
07:09He realizes it's not gonna be that easy
07:10for him to hit him on top at the beginning.
07:13Maybe Diaz is a fast lightweight,
07:16but he's a strong lightweight.
07:17He's not easy to put away in a cold breeze,
07:21and Pacquiao can't expect
07:23for anything to happen quickly here.
07:25It's gonna be a tough fight for Pacquiao tonight.
07:27crowd chanting
07:29Pacquiao, Pacquiao, Pacquiao, Pacquiao, Pacquiao, Pacquiao!
07:31Terrific combinations by Pacquiao.
07:33Many of the punches being blocked, however,
07:35by Diaz's gloves.
07:37Yeah, but Pacquiao's boxing,
07:38using his footwork, his movement,
07:40a lot different than I've ever seen Pacquiao do.
07:43For the first time, he's got somebody
07:45that probably that he's faster than.
07:47crowd chanting
07:49Pacquiao, Pacquiao, Pacquiao, Pacquiao!
07:52And you hear the adoration of the crowd.
07:54crowd chanting
07:58In reference to what he knew the crowd would be,
08:00Diaz said,
08:02in our Mexican heritage, we have a statement,
08:05pocos para locas.
08:07In other words, we may be smaller,
08:09but we're crazy enough to make our presence felt.
08:12crowd chanting
08:16Uppercut by Pacquiao.
08:18Uppercut by Pacquiao.
08:20Mixing his punches brilliantly.
08:22Cactus Diaz with a left hand.
08:24crowd chanting
08:28Diaz blocking ardently with his gloves,
08:31but on the defensive before he finally breaks out
08:33with another attempted body shot.
08:36Diaz is doing a pretty good job defensive,
08:38but he can't do too much offensive,
08:39simply because he's not fast enough yet.
08:42Until Pacquiao slows down,
08:43it's gonna be hard for him to do the things
08:45that he's doing right now.
08:46It's gonna be hard for him to do the thing offensive.
08:48And a smile and a nod from David Diaz to Pacquiao
08:51as if to say, yeah, I get it.
08:54I understand why you're so great.
08:56crowd chanting
09:01Deep breath.
09:03Good boy.
09:06Okay. Deep breath.
09:09Okay.
09:11crowd chanting
09:15Okay, man.
09:17Don't let him rough you up on the inside, okay?
09:20I want you to use your feet and get out of there.
09:22All right, you look stiff, straight jab.
09:24You got to jab your way in there.
09:25It's a stiff jab, not a flinging jab, all right?
09:28And then you're ready to work.
09:29That's the most important thing to look at right now.
09:32Just relax.
09:33I'm ready.
09:34Listen, relax. Stiff jab, relax.
09:36Get down.
09:38Diaz's trainer, Jimmy Strickland,
09:40is one of the true veteran cornermen of the sport,
09:42a cut man, a chief second,
09:45a guy who'll carry the spit bucket.
09:47Strickland has said,
09:48if David could beat Manny Pacquiao,
09:50I might retire.
09:52Diaz says, no way.
09:53I'm not going to let him.
09:56And you heard Freddie Roach very pleased
09:58with the way his fighter fought round one.
10:00CompuBox numbers Pacquiao 19 out of 91,
10:03Diaz only 9 out of 43.
10:09Again, the uppercut with a left hand from Pacquiao.
10:14And a body shot from Diaz.
10:16Momentarily drives Manny back.
10:19Hand-speed advantage tremendously
10:22in Pacquiao's favor here.
10:23Yeah, Pacquiao's doing a beautiful job of boxing.
10:27He's putting his combinations together,
10:28getting in and out.
10:40Good left hand by Diaz.
10:43Caught Pacquiao right between punches.
10:45Lands a left hand on the chin again.
10:47This one, a more glancing blow.
10:50Boom, boom.
10:51Pacquiao with a big left-hand lead over the top.
10:54And another uppercut.
10:55But he has not been landing.
10:57Those punches are not landing.
10:59Diaz is catching the punches for the most part.
11:02Doing a good job with his tight guard.
11:04David Diaz, all those punches are blocked.
11:08And those.
11:11And there he is.
11:13David is willing to weather the storm,
11:16looking for his few chances here and there.
11:18Yeah, Pacquiao's throwing a lot of punches,
11:20but I haven't saw that much land, you know?
11:22And I don't know if he's gonna keep up this pace,
11:24because normally, he moves around,
11:26as I said, rests, and then explodes.
11:28But he's consistently boxing this fight, which is good.
11:30But I don't know if he can keep that up
11:32all throughout the whole fight.
11:37Pacquiao trying to thrash Diaz with speed.
11:40Catches him with a right and a left there.
11:45Crowd looking for him to land something big.
11:48And Diaz didn't manage to block the right hand.
11:52Big left over the top by Pacquiao.
11:54Big left over the top by Diaz.
11:56Blood coming from the right eye of David Diaz.
12:01Already, Pacquiao has brought blood from Diaz.
12:0440 seconds still to go in a wildly active round 2.
12:28Straight right hand lands for Diaz.
12:30Pacquiao lands his right hook.
12:33Jim Strickland, the manager of Diaz,
12:35normally works in most fights as a cut man,
12:38so he'll get a chance to practice on his own fight
12:40at the end of this round.
12:44Is he a good one, Emanuel?
12:45He's a good cut man.
12:47One of the best in the business.
12:51So Strickland will go to work on Diaz.
12:53The cut is right on the bridge of his nose.
12:55I don't know.
12:57He's making a hard piece of it right up here, Jim.
13:00It's up here.
13:01It's up here.
13:03That's a little bit here on his nose.
13:05Hey, don't let him get crouched.
13:07Don't take him, shit.
13:09Don't let that cut on the nose do the work for him.
13:12All right, listen.
13:15The biggest problem is you're not doing a nice power jab,
13:18and as a result, he's landing his big left hand
13:21over the top, right?
13:22Now, you've got to step in
13:25behind a good, stiff power jab.
13:28And once you're in, you can't stand up straight or back out.
13:31You've got to keep your head in his chest.
13:34You ever see Pacquiao do something that's very unusual?
13:36Beautiful combination.
13:37Right uppercut, then followed by left up,
13:39right uppercut up between the gloves.
13:41That may cause the cut on the nose.
13:45Well, you've done cuts, Emanuel.
13:47Tell us about the difficulty of a cut
13:49right on the bridge of the nose.
13:50Bridge of the nose is very difficult.
13:52It's not serious. It doesn't bleed too much.
13:54You know, adrenaline chloride and thrombin
13:56and the regular stuff would usually get it to coagulate.
13:58It doesn't bleed too much.
14:01Even though there was no knockdown,
14:02Harold Edelman scored the second round,
14:04a 10-8 round for Pacquiao,
14:06who had a landslide in power punches,
14:08landing 34 of 83, only 7 of 25 for Diaz,
14:12a wildly active Pacquiao
14:14through 114 punches in the second round.
14:17David Diaz won't just go away.
14:21Pacquiao's speed is just right at this stage.
14:23It's too much, and that's the difference in the fight.
14:25Not only is he boxing,
14:27but he's doing a variety of things.
14:28He's jabbing. He's doing right hooks,
14:30right uppercuts, left hands, over top.
14:32He's doing so many different things.
14:34He looks spectacular,
14:36and he's doing it against a southpaw
14:37after not having fought one for years.
14:39Big right hook by Pacquiao.
14:41Another big right hook right on the button by Pacquiao.
14:45David Diaz has a stern chin,
14:47and he's taking these punches pretty well.
14:49Well, it's gonna be put to the test tonight,
14:50but Pacquiao's hitting him with punches.
14:52I mean, consistently with both hands.
14:57David's speed is just too low right now.
15:00He cannot get over the boot.
15:01What David needs to do is to go plant his head
15:02on Manny Pacquiao's chest and not move away.
15:05Yeah, but he's just too slow.
15:10Two good body shots for Diaz.
15:14And a third for good measure.
15:17Pacquiao again with that right hook,
15:20right uppercut combination.
15:21Tremendous work with the right hand by Pacquiao.
15:24Hooking and uppercutting just the same way
15:28we saw Andre Berto do it with his backhand last week.
15:31Pacquiao's doing it with his lead hand.
15:42The speed and skill of Manny Pacquiao
15:45is amazing to behold.
15:46And seven wrestling to see him throwing a right hook
15:48and all these type of punches that he normally can't throw
15:50on the standard right-hand fighter.
15:52He's fighting a left-hand fighter,
15:53so he can do everything.
15:55Well, remember when Pacquiao was great,
15:57even as a totally predictable jab-jab left-hand fighter?
16:02Now he's added all this variety to his game,
16:04and still with the same physical talent.
16:17The courage of David Diaz
16:21is one of the key measures
16:23to making the fight watchable so far.
16:27He's too brave to just go away
16:29amid the onslaught from Pacquiao.
16:33Diaz mostly blocking that right hook.
16:35Pacquiao gets to his body.
16:39Just missed with what would have been
16:40a big left-hand connect, did Pacquiao.
16:44Two body shots from Diaz,
16:46and a third one as the round comes to a close.
16:50Manny Pacquiao's won all these rounds,
16:52but Diaz is sneaking in a body shot here and there.
16:56Now let's take a look at some upcoming
16:57HBO boxing programming.
16:59July 12, heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko
17:02takes on Tony Thompson live from Hamburg, Germany
17:04at 4.30 Eastern, 1.30 Pacific Time.
17:07Klitschko versus Thompson will re-air
17:09that same night on both coasts at 10 p.m.
17:12July 19, it's the premiere of Countdown Dakota Margarito,
17:15offering a behind-the-scenes look at each fighter
17:18for their highly-anticipated showdown.
17:20One week later, July 26, HBO Pay-Per-View
17:23brings you the live fight between Cotto and Margarito
17:25for Cotto's welterweight title.
17:27And August 2, Boxing After Dark returns
17:29with former 147-pound titleist Zab Judah
17:32taking on veteran contender Joshua Clottey.
17:35For all that and more, log on to HBO.com.
17:38There you go, Zab.
17:40Right hand, okay, now let's move.
17:42And clip me.
17:43That hook to the head's working real well for you.
17:46Look at me.
17:48Pay attention.
17:49Now, hook to the head, then back to the body, okay?
17:53Let's concentrate on the fight.
17:54You'll see right here, you'll see Pacquiao
17:56throwing his right hook, something that he can't
17:58normally do when he's fighting a stand-up right-handed fighter,
18:01and he seems to love it.
18:02That's been his pet punch so far the rest,
18:04most of the fight.
18:06I was watching him, he's looking past,
18:07straight at Roach, he was giving instructions,
18:09looking at the replay in the arena.
18:11Admiring his work.
18:13Brings a whole new meaning to the old boxing phrase,
18:15admiring your work.
18:17You know, normally as a fighter, Pacquiao's known for that
18:19power for straight left, you know, jab, jab,
18:21with his right hand, a hard straight left.
18:23And he's changing up.
18:24He's got a guy that he can do everything with now,
18:26because there's a right, another left-handed,
18:28he's doing it, too.
18:29Harold, how do you have it through three?
18:30Look at you, three rounds to nothing,
18:3230 to 26, Manny Pacquiao.
18:35Jim, I can't remember a sophomore
18:38who can throw four or five right hands
18:40before he pulls his right hand back.
18:42Incredible.
18:43He throws a hook, a jab, an uppercut,
18:46and finally he'll pull his right hand back.
18:47It's amazing.
18:49I mean, Roy Jones used to do it with a left hand,
18:51but this kid is amazing with that right hand.
18:53Three to nothing Pacquiao.
18:54Give him an extra point in round two,
18:56where he hit Diaz with everything,
18:58with the stool and the referee.
19:00The early evidence on Pacquiao moving up to lightweight,
19:03gee, maybe he's finally found a weight class
19:05where he can be really good.
19:07And he seems to be enjoying it.
19:09I think he needs to fight more sophomores
19:10so he enjoys it.
19:11And Vic Drakulic calls a halt to the action
19:14so that David Diaz's nose cut can be examined.
19:18Nothing as I could, no.
19:20Just a little bit more serious.
19:25This was one of the possibilities,
19:27and because of his blinding speed
19:30and major advantages,
19:32when at distance, Pacquiao would be able to cut Diaz up.
19:37And Diaz's only response is to get more aggressive
19:40and try to do more damage,
19:41and that's what he's trying to do,
19:43leaving himself open for Pacquiao's assaults.
19:50Speed is just too much,
19:52and the fact that Pacquiao's doing everything
19:55and moving and twisting and pivoting and turning
19:57all while he's punching.
19:59A southpaw Jack Dempsey in the lightweight division.
20:03A nonstop aggressor with speed and power beyond compare.
20:08Just the whole body rhythm and coordination of Diaz
20:10is just too slow.
20:15And a cut now above the right eye of Diaz,
20:17as you said, Emanuel.
20:19So he's bleeding from the nose,
20:20and he's bleeding from above the right eye,
20:22and he's getting hit flush with a lot of Pacquiao shots.
20:28No matter how hard Diaz works
20:31to cover up against these onslaughts,
20:33Manny Pacquiao is simply too fast and too good.
20:39Perfect shot by Pacquiao.
20:42Diaz shakes his head as if to say to the referee,
20:44I'm okay.
20:46I know I just got hit with a howitzer,
20:48but I'm still here.
21:00And they throw at the same time.
21:03The difference in hand speed is so evident.
21:05Diaz not only has speed,
21:06but he just can't deal with all the twisting and pivoting
21:09that Diaz, I mean, that Pacquiao's putting
21:11into the fight also.
21:14Diaz's left eye is beginning to swell.
21:17We're told that the cut to the right eye
21:19was caused by a headbutt,
21:21so we'll take a look at it between rounds.
21:24Let me see.
21:26Hey, your last 30 seconds,
21:29you did not have a headbutt.
21:31You did not have a headbutt.
21:33Your last 30 seconds, you did what you're supposed to do.
21:36Once you get in close, you got to get your head
21:38under his chest and keep moving forward.
21:43You've got to get your head under his chest
21:45and keep moving forward.
21:46Your last 30 seconds, you did that.
21:47You won't get hit half as much then,
21:49but you're standing up.
21:51Here we see what possibly could have been
21:53the cause of the butt,
21:55which was a headbutt right there.
21:59Well, that created the big cut over the right eye,
22:02but it's a moot point whether the cut is created
22:04by a butt or a punch at this point
22:06because of the violent onslaughts
22:08that Pacquiao is mounting in every round.
22:10Power shots through the fourth round.
22:12Diaz has landed 30 out of 141.
22:15Pacquiao has landed 80 of 255.
22:19He's averaging 64 power punches thrown per round.
22:23There's no way you're going to beat him
22:24if he's getting off that many shots.
22:28It is a brilliant and stunningly effective performance
22:32by Pacquiao so far.
22:33And Diaz is getting seriously behind
22:35because, you know, being that he's not
22:37a devastating one-punch knockout fighter,
22:41once you get behind on points like this,
22:42it's going to be very hard for him to pull this fight out.
22:45You know, even when he comes back,
22:47he's just a little too fast, a little too sharp,
22:49and steadily moving and twisting and turning,
22:51punching, going in and out, and Diaz just in his footwork,
22:54he's just too clumsy and slow and stiff.
22:56Two good body shots there by the determined
22:59and gutty David Diaz.
23:03Keeps demonstrating that as far as attitude is concerned,
23:05he won't take no for an answer.
23:08Hard right hand by Pacquiao.
23:11Uppercut stuns Diaz again.
23:17Pacquiao's ability to put his punches together
23:19with blinding speed is amazing.
23:30Leading with hooks, crosses, and uppercuts,
23:33Pacquiao more or less dispensing with the jab
23:35because he doesn't really need to set anything up.
23:37No, he doesn't. He's just really pretty much
23:39just having target practice right now for the most part.
23:45Left hand pop shot across the top.
23:48Two quick right hands inside.
23:50Another uppercut, and Diaz,
23:52in the face of all that, comes forward.
23:56The bloody mask speaks for itself.
23:59It's very interesting.
24:00Now, to Pacquiao has always been known
24:02as the puncher of the puncher.
24:03Now to see him being a really technical character
24:05all around boxer fighters is really a thing of beauty
24:08because I never expected him to look this good
24:11from his boxing in this fight,
24:13even though I thought he would move more
24:14than that to do the things that he's doing.
24:18And incidentally,
24:20there's a lot of people out there
24:21who are not familiar with Pacquiao.
24:24And incidentally,
24:26in case you're really paying attention
24:27to Manny Pacquiao for the first time
24:29and you're looking at the possible fights ahead,
24:31how good is Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico?
24:33Well, consider this.
24:35In two fights against Pacquiao,
24:37Marquez has won more rounds than Pacquiao has won.
24:40That's how good he is.
24:42If it weren't for the four knockdowns
24:44that Pacquiao has applied to Marquez,
24:46Marquez would have won both fights.
24:49Now Diaz gets a couple of answers in there.
24:51What guts!
24:52What determination by David Diaz!
25:04Hard left hand by Diaz
25:07momentarily stops the Pacquiao assault.
25:09Momentarily stops the Pacquiao assault.
25:24The scars and stripes are bloody,
25:26but unbound.
25:37You're doing better that round,
25:39but you're not staying low enough.
25:40And when you're in, you're not punching up.
25:42You're punching round, hitting the arms and the elbows, right?
25:45Right, right.
25:47The elbow is where it loves you.
25:49Where you need it.
25:51So, stay lower, try to punch in tighter, not wide.
25:55And if once you're in,
25:57you keep pressing his chest with your head,
25:59he's gonna back up,
26:01and he won't punch near as much on his heels, right?
26:04Then you'll be...
26:09You're in.
26:10You're in.
26:11Okay?
26:13All right.
26:14Ah!
26:15Maintain.
26:17Okay.
26:18I wanna see a couple of uppercuts.
26:19Keep going.
26:21Keep going.
26:22Keep going.
26:23Keep going.
26:24Come on, son, take it easy.
26:26Good boy.
26:27When he's going under, lift him up.
26:29Good job.
26:30Good job.
26:31Good job.
26:32Power shots in round 5.
26:34Diaz, 7 out of 45.
26:36Manny Pacquiao, 27 out of 56.
26:38And, again, not all that familiar with boxing
26:42would look at Diaz's face and say,
26:43how can he be allowed to continue
26:45under these circumstances?
26:47Yeah, because he is a world champion,
26:49and if they do stop it between rounds,
26:51but I'm a little bit kind of disappointed.
26:53I thought that it would have coagulated
26:55a lot better than it has at this stage,
26:57but it seems as soon as that bell rings,
26:59he goes out, he starts bleeding as if
27:01they didn't put anything on him.
27:03Well, Jim Strickland's got a lot on his hands,
27:06trying to stop two bad cuts
27:08and talk the fighter through the fight at the same time.
27:11That's exactly what I was thinking of.
27:13You know, normally, when he's just a cut man,
27:14it's different because he concentrates
27:16entirely on the cut,
27:17but he's trying to talk all the way through the fight.
27:19I think Jim is actually a pharmacist by trade, too.
27:25Break!
27:26Go ahead.
27:27Go.
27:32Action flows momentarily in round 6.
27:38A lot of trade jabs in the center of the ring.
27:41Again, the dramatic hand speed advantage
27:44for Pacquiao, quite visible.
27:53Despite everything he's taken,
27:55David Diaz still willing to lunge forward,
27:58looking to land one shot.
28:01He's not exactly a power puncher, either.
28:08Break!
28:09Watch your head. Watch your head.
28:10Let's go.
28:11Go ahead, David.
28:17No way Diaz will quit.
28:19He's totally willing to go out on his shield.
28:22So that puts pressure on the referee
28:24and medical authorities to be sure
28:26that they protect him in the right way.
28:27As you can see, Pacquiao's really concentrating
28:29on dropping those shots right on that eye to it.
28:32He's landed a tremendous left cross right on the eye,
28:35and he's seemed like loading up,
28:38and he's looking at power punches now.
28:40Pacquiao's not a sadist.
28:41He's a sportsman at heart,
28:43but he will do what has to be done,
28:46which is to continue to go after the damage
28:48he's already done to David Diaz.
28:53Diaz has to be earning the respect to the crowd
28:56as he continues to fire resolutely in round 6.
28:59And the Pacquiao storm once again continues.
29:04A tsunami, a hurricane, a tornado.
29:09Incomparable ring violence for this era in boxing.
29:15The cuts seem to be a big factor in this,
29:17so, you know, actually...
29:26Ring doctors, you know,
29:28ring doctor says he's okay.
29:30I'm sure that Diaz would agree.
29:32When he beat Eric Morales last year,
29:34he did it with his right eye swollen up
29:36like a tennis ball, completely shut.
29:39But one eye is swelling, and the other one is bleeding,
29:41and they haven't seemingly stopped the flow of blood,
29:43and as soon as the bell rings,
29:45it starts bleeding right away again.
29:46It's a big factor in this fight.
29:48Halfway through, they touch gloves
29:50in sportsman-like appreciation for each other.
29:57The closer you get, the more effective you'll be.
30:00You still got to throw shorter punches and then tight.
30:03Oh, yeah.
30:04Yeah.
30:06Wait a minute. Let that go now, right now.
30:07Let me get here. I got to stop this cut.
30:11He's not hitting punches. He's just too fast.
30:13Right.
30:14Here.
30:15Hit it, hit it, man.
30:17David, you got to get on those punches, buddy.
30:19I know.
30:20Okay, let's do it, though.
30:21All right.
30:22Let's do it.
30:23Let's do it.
30:24Let's do it.
30:25Okay, let's do it, though.
30:27Here we see Pacquiao throwing punches in such a volume,
30:30and they're all coming from different angles.
30:31He's mixing up, and that's why it's so hard
30:34for Diaz to stop the punches,
30:35because he's not just throwing one punch or two.
30:37It's just the speed and the variety of punches.
30:39It's just too much for him.
30:42Well, a perfect line of expert commentary
30:44there between rounds by Diaz.
30:46Close. I can handle his punches.
30:48He's just too fast.
30:51That's the story of what's happened so far.
30:53Harold Lederman, how do you have it through 6?
30:556 to nothing, 60 to 53, Manny Pacquiao.
30:58Maybe I'm being a little bit more generous
31:00than I should be.
31:01I think there's a lot more 10-8 rounds
31:02mixed in there somewhere.
31:04But Diaz, I got to point this out.
31:06He's cut over the right eye.
31:07Initially, that cut was caused by an accidental headbutt.
31:11If this fight gets stopped,
31:12that cut is being made worse by legal blows.
31:15If the fight gets stopped,
31:17because we're beyond the fourth round,
31:19they'll go to the scorecards to determine the winner.
31:21But certainly, Pacquiao is way ahead on the scorecards.
31:24He's going to go to the scorecards.
31:26He's going to go to the scorecards.
31:28He's going to go to the scorecards.
31:30He's going to go to the scorecards.
31:32He's going to go to the scorecards.
31:34Normally, we look at Pacquiao as such a power puncher.
31:37Now, he's a crafty technical boxer in this fight.
31:41And let me just reinterpret what Harold said.
31:43What you're saying, Harold, is that he can't win the fight
31:46strictly because of that cut
31:47because he didn't cause it with a punch.
31:49Correct. He wouldn't win on a TKO.
31:52He'd win, it'll go to the scorecards, and he'll win.
31:54He wouldn't win this fight unless he ended up
31:56with another disqualification.
32:02Look at the combinations.
32:07Break! Break!
32:08Watch her hold her. Watch her hold her.
32:16To the degree that boxing can be a demonstration
32:21of supreme violence mixed with artistic brilliance,
32:25that's what Manny Pacquiao is providing tonight.
32:32David Diaz keeps plugging away.
32:42He wasn't as fast as Zab Judah in 1996 either,
32:45but he somehow got that done.
32:47He wasn't as fast as Armando Santacruz
32:49in 1996 either, but he somehow got that done.
32:52His career will never be compared
32:54with that of the great Eric Morales,
32:56but he somehow got that done.
32:58So don't tell David Diaz he doesn't have a chance.
33:00Watch her hold her. No holding.
33:04He doesn't believe you.
33:07Break! Break! Watch her hold her.
33:15And incidentally...
33:17Break! Break!
33:19Lest you think that Pacquiao may have no other talents
33:22besides what he shows you in the ring,
33:24he's currently enrolled in college courses
33:27back in the Philippines.
33:29When he goes to class to sit in a college classroom,
33:32five armed bodyguards have to wait outside the building.
33:37Unless he says that even in class
33:38he spends more time setting autographs
33:40than he does doing homework or studying.
33:42The teachers let the students scream and shout
33:47when he comes into the room
33:48and asks to have their picture taken with him.
33:52Now let's take a look at some upcoming HBO Sports programming.
33:55July 16, the day after baseball's all-star game,
33:58Pastis now returns with a live town hall special
34:01on the state of the game.
34:02July 22, the latest edition of Real Sports
34:05with Bryant Gumbel premieres.
34:06Among the stories, as the Beijing Olympics approach,
34:09a look at the price young gymnasts pay
34:11to compete at the world-class level.
34:14And August 6, it's the premiere of Hard Knocks training camp
34:17with the Dallas Cowboys.
34:18Follow America's team for five weeks
34:21as stars, backups, and draft picks
34:23all vie for camera time, playing time, and roster spots.
34:27For all that and more, log on to hbo.com.
34:34Hey, when you're in close,
34:35your left hook is open for you, for the body.
34:38But you don't want to throw anything wide,
34:40like I told you, all right?
34:41Okay.
34:42-♪
34:45You've got to try to keep your head below his.
34:48Once you're inside, you've got to push him back
34:50with your head.
34:51Okay.
34:52What's wrong with him?
34:53Feint him, he goes under.
34:55Feint him and look to the uppercut.
34:57All right? Can you feint him just like in the gym?
34:59Take a deep breath.
35:00Okay, timing.
35:02Don't fall.
35:03Let's do timing, okay?
35:05Timing.
35:07Don't get tangled up in the inside with him.
35:11Use your feet.
35:18The way for a slower fighter to deal with speed
35:21is to try to interrupt the action
35:23and make the faster fighter fight
35:25when he doesn't want to.
35:27There hasn't been a moment in this fight
35:29when Manny Pacquiao didn't want to assault David Diaz.
35:34So it's very difficult for Diaz to find any moment
35:37at which to make a statement.
35:38He's gotten in some body punches,
35:40but mostly he's taken big shots.
35:46As he said, when he told us,
35:48stricken you about two rounds back,
35:49he just can't handle the speed.
35:52And I think that's a good way to sum it up.
35:54It's too much of a speed.
35:55Well, we wondered if Pacquiao would look any slower
35:58at 135 pounds than he did at 126 and 130.
36:02And Emmanuel, I think the early returns
36:05may be made a little bit more dramatic
36:08because of the absence of speed from the opponent.
36:11Is, if anything, he looks faster.
36:12He looks faster, more natural, looks stronger.
36:15All the way down, less and more devastating.
36:17Soon, this right rock fight's gonna have to stop
36:19for this, and the referee's gonna have to stop the fight.
36:21Diaz gets in a good left uppercut of his own.
36:26Fires a straight jab, comes forward to make clear,
36:28I'm still a fighter, I'm not gonna go away.
36:32But at this point, you worry about
36:33how badly is David Diaz gonna get hurt
36:36by continuing to take punishment
36:38in a fight where he's not gonna go down,
36:40not gonna get knocked out.
36:42He blocked a lot of those shots.
36:46Sometimes, the knockout is a merciful event.
36:49Yes, because right now, David Diaz throws punches.
36:51There's no power, and he's just pushing
36:53and stumbling and falling in.
36:55But there's no power, so just about a time
36:57before he gets knocked out,
36:58unless the referee out of corner stops the fight.
37:01And if the kind of mercy that puts you on your back
37:03is not gonna take place,
37:05then it's up to the referee
37:06and the medical supervisors at ringside
37:08to deliver mercy on their own.
37:10Yeah, I think the referee's getting in position
37:11to stop the fight now.
37:13He's looking entirely strictly at his eye in the face.
37:15So he's getting in a position,
37:17and his mind is functioning on stopping the fight now.
37:23Increasingly on the defensive,
37:25Diaz has less and less to offer
37:28as the 8th round goes on.
37:32The crowd has gotten its money's worth.
37:34The crowd has seen the show they wanted to see.
37:39Manny Pacquiao has made his statement.
37:42There isn't much reason, beyond a few moments like that,
37:46for this to keep going forward.
38:00Break!
38:04If ever you knew in advance
38:07that if things got bad,
38:08an opponent would be too brave for his own good,
38:12you knew it tonight.
38:13Yeah, I think the quarter should stop the fight.
38:15It would be a graceful way to end it,
38:17but it's over, Fowler, practically.
38:18Time!
38:19-♪
38:27You good, guy?
38:28I'm good, man.
38:32I can still see.
38:34I can still see.
38:39Let me hit this.
38:40Close your eyes.
38:46You can't punch him outside, now, you hear me?
38:49Keep your hands beside your chin
38:51until you work your way in that way.
38:53Let him hit the gloves.
38:54But if you try to punch him outside, he's punching.
38:56He's coming in very close to falling.
38:58You got to pick it up on him.
38:59Yeah, stop the fight there.
39:00Let's go. Yes, that's what they're talking about.
39:02Let's go.
39:04You do that, Tiaz, real nice.
39:08-♪
39:10-♪
39:14In and out, in and out.
39:16Ambiabak's numbers show that from the fifth round on,
39:18David Tiaz's punch output has been dropping.
39:2165 punches thrown in the fifth, 57 in the sixth,
39:2450 in the seventh, only 38 in the eighth.
39:28Surely, a serious consideration must now be given
39:32to stopping the fight in the ninth
39:34if things continue the way they've been.
39:48I guess, given the accepted traditional ethic
39:51in the sport, Emanuel,
39:53if this were Pacquiao's title belt instead of Tiaz's,
39:55it would have been stopped before now.
39:57It probably would have, you know,
39:58because Tiaz is gonna keep coming all night
40:00as long as they let him,
40:01but even when he punches, he's ineffective.
40:03He's not a knockout puncher,
40:04so he's not gonna be able to perform a one-punch miracle.
40:07He just has much more punch damage
40:09than he can take before the fight eventually ends.
40:12He's had his moment in the sun.
40:13He's got an $800,000 guarantee
40:16and the chance for pay-per-view benefits
40:18if the buy rate rises above a certain level.
40:21He got a lot of publicity before the fight,
40:23saying, I'm driving a 1991 Honda with no air conditioning.
40:28He's gonna get a chance to buy a new car.
40:31Well, he might end up with a million dollars
40:32from these fights, which is a good paycheck.
40:35And he's did a good job.
40:36He's just not talented enough to compete on this level
40:39with the top fighters.
40:41But he's brave enough to compete on any level,
40:44and he's proven that.

41:00IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE FIGHT
41:02IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE FIGHT
41:03Tremendous straight left-hand shot for Pacquiao.
41:06Diaz falls into his arms.
41:09If the idea here is that there's some honor
41:12in allowing David Diaz to finish the fight,
41:16that would be a very misplaced instinct.
41:20It's not worth it.
41:24There's plenty of honor for Diaz tonight.
41:27It won't be in some way embellished
41:29by letting him go to a bloodier, more brutal finish.
41:38How many more?
41:40Down he goes, and Drakulic stops the fight.
41:44He should have never got to that.

41:48IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE FIGHT
41:49IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE FIGHT
41:50Welcome to the lightweight division.
41:54Maddy Pacquiao was sensational tonight.
41:57He put on a clinic, and it proved
41:59that he was much more than just a power puncher.
42:01A flame of pure fire.
42:05He did it all.
42:06Incomparable in the sport.
42:10There's only one.
42:13There's only one.
42:28Portrait of a superstar.
42:31Maddy Pacquiao in bold relief.
42:43Beautiful.
42:45Beautiful.
42:46Floyd Mayweather retired from the sport a few weeks ago.
42:50It is expected that Oscar De La Hoya
42:52is going to retire by the end of this year.
42:55Where does the spotlight fall?
42:57Right here.
42:58Here do you see Pacquiao in a beautiful shot.
43:00Left cross, right over the shoulder.
43:02Diaz never even saw the punch.
43:06Jab, left hand, good night.
43:11Merciful.
43:14Finally, the merciful knockout we were talking about.
43:17Yes, it was.
43:18First place.
43:24Right on the chin.
43:27Right on the chin.
43:39Through eight rounds, the three judges' scores
43:41were 80-71, 80-72, 80-71.
43:44Totally academic.
43:47It was a bloodletting from about the second round on.
43:57And if the question was,
43:59how good could Pacquiao look in his first fight
44:02as a lightweight,
44:03the answer is, better than you might have believed.
44:13Let's go to Michael Buffer
44:14for the official particulars on the knockout.
44:17Ladies and gentlemen,
44:19before we give the official time,
44:21a round of applause for a young man from Chicago
44:24with the heart of a lion,
44:27an Olympian and a world champion,
44:29David Diaz.
44:33Referee Vic Draculich calls a halt to this bout
44:38at two minutes, 24 seconds, round number nine.
44:43The winner by knockout victory,
44:46the fighting pride of the Philippines,
44:48now a four-time world champion
44:54and new WBC lightweight champion of the world,
45:01Manny...
45:07Pacquiao!
45:17Another look along the Las Vegas Strip
45:19in the wake of Pacquiao's tremendous victory,
45:21and we bring you back to ringside to sum up.
45:23Emmanuel Stewart coming into the fight.
45:26You couldn't help but notice that Joe Calzaghe,
45:27the 168- and 75-pound champion from Wales,
45:30hasn't lost a fight in 18 years.
45:32Miguel Cotto's a tremendous rising superstar
45:34in the welterweight division with 32 straight wins,
45:3727 by knockouts.
45:38But in the wake of this, is there any doubt in your mind
45:40as to whether Manny Pacquiao's
45:41the number one pound-for-pound fighter in boxing?
45:43Jim, definitely, there's no doubt in my mind.
45:45Manny Pacquiao is the number one pound-for-pound,
45:48and I base that on the fact that he's been fighting
45:50top-notch competition for the last five years
45:53against all three of the legendary great Mexican fighters
45:56he's fought over here, for the most part,
45:58where in the beginning, he wasn't that popular.
46:00And he's performed very well.
46:01And I would say number two, I have Cotto,
46:03because he's been so consistent as a 140- and 47-pounder.
46:06And Calzaghe, I would rate as number three
46:08because he's a good fighter, undefeated.
46:10And then I would go to number four,
46:12Juan Manuel Marquez,
46:14and number five, I rounds out with Kelly Pavley.
46:16So, if the next question becomes,
46:19does Pacquiao fight a third fight
46:20against Juan Manuel Marquez,
46:22or does he go up to 140 pounds
46:24and fight Ricky Hatton,
46:25as his trainer has suggested he should do?
46:27Which one of those two fights would you want to see?
46:30Well, I think the most logical and money fight
46:32would probably be a fight with Ricky Hatton to some degree
46:34because of Ricky's unbelievable popularity.
46:36But myself, as a just pure fight fan,
46:39I'd like to see him fight Marquez again
46:40because outside of being knocked down four times,
46:44Marquez would have probably won both of those fights.
46:47And I would like to see them finish up with a third fight,
46:49and hopefully that Marquez don't go down for one time
46:52and that's exactly what would happen
46:53if he could stay on his feet for the whole fight.
46:55But I would love to see those two guys fight again.
46:57And, of course, that fight would take place at 135 pounds,
47:00where you just saw Manny Pacquiao
47:02looking so spectacular in this win over David Diaz.
47:06A tremendous performance by Pacquiao,
47:08as might have been expected.
47:10Thanks for being with us.
