00:51Rappler wins its biggest case as a company as the Court of Appeals voids the 2018 shutdown
00:56order from the Duterte Times Securities and Exchange Commission or SEC.
01:01This restores Rappler's Certificate of Incorporation and eliminates the risk of a shutdown.
01:06In a strongly-worded decision promulgated on July 23, the CA says, quote, Like a bull
01:12seeing red, the SEC on bank plowed through law and jurisprudence to reach its mark, the
01:16death of Rappler.
01:18The SEC on bank violated the hierarchy of courts and ignored procedure.
01:22These actions have no place in a democratic state.
01:25The decision is spanned by Associate Justice Emily Sangas-Parguito.
01:29When the rule of law prevails, justice is served.
01:33It's a vindication after a torturous eight years of harassment.
01:39The SEC revoked Rappler's certificate in January 2018.
01:43It claimed the issuance of Philippine Depository Receipts or PDRs to foreign investor Omidyar
01:48was unconstitutional.
01:51A U.S. federal grand jury indicts former Philippine elections chief Andres Bautista and three
01:56executives from Smartmatic in a case of alleged bribery and money laundering.
02:01The U.S. Department of Justice said Thursday, August 8, that Bautista allegedly received
02:05at least $1 million in bribes from, quote, three executives of an election voting machine
02:10and service provider company.
02:12The U.S. DOJ press release named only the respondents, not Smartmatic itself.
02:17The U.S. investigation began in September 2023, when the Department of Homeland Security
02:22filed a case at the District Court in Southern Florida.
02:25In the Philippines, the inquiry into Bautista's alleged ill-gotten wealth began in 2017, when
02:30his estranged wife brought the matter before the NBI.
02:34The U.S. DOJ says it's stepping in because the respondents in the case may have used
02:38banks in the U.S. to carry out the laundering scheme.
02:42Bautista and Smartmatic deny the allegations.
02:46Police say fugitive doomsday preacher Apollo Kibuloy may be hiding inside his church's
02:51sprawling compound in Davao City.
02:54Davao Regional Police Director Brigadier General Nicolas Torre III says Thursday, August 8,
02:59certain indicators and informants point to Kibuloy holed up in the 30-hectare buhangin
03:03property owned by his kingdom of Jesus Christ.
03:07At least 3,000 people are believed to be inside the property, protecting the preacher, who
03:11calls himself the appointed son of God.
03:14Torre says the property is immense and intricate, and makes capturing Kibuloy a serious challenge
03:19for the police.
03:21Buhangin is home to the still-unfinished King Dome, a five-hectare structure designed to
03:25hold 77,000 people.
03:28The property also has several elevator shafts, an elaborate network of tunnels, an underground
03:33parking area, and even a taxiway linked to Davao's Francisco Bangoy International Airport.
03:41Filipino athletic star EJ Obiena says he is organizing a world-class pole vault competition
03:46in the Philippines next month.
03:48If plans push through, Filipinos will see the likes of Greece's Emanuel Carrales, China's
03:52Huang Bokai, Germany's Oleg Zernikel, and Obiena himself competing at the Ayala Triangle
03:58Gardens in Makati on September 20.
04:01Obiena recently finished fourth in men's pole vault at the Paris Olympics.
04:05In a virtual press conference from Paris on Wednesday, August 7, he said he now has time
04:09to plan the event that's now sanctioned by World Athletics, the sport's governing body.
04:14Obiena and his team are working with a European consultant to make sure that, quote, everything
04:18is up to standard.
04:20The last time Obiena competed in the Philippines was during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
04:25World Athletics ranked him the world's number two in pole vault in 2023.
04:31Hip-hop group SB19 and legendary rapper Glock 9 dropped a collab single titled Kalakal Friday,
04:37August 9.
04:45Glock 9 says the new song is about believing in one's craft.
04:49It tackles resilience in an industry with a competitive landscape, challenging skeptics
04:53and critics.
04:54He also shares he was inspired by SB19's dedication and confidence and would love to work with
05:00them again.
05:01The SB19 members say the iconic hip-hop star's presence motivated them to write and not get
05:06worried about being vulnerable and honest.
05:09The quintet wrote their individual parts and verses for the new song.
05:13Then they all collaborated with Glock 9 for the chorus and hooks.
05:16SB19 explains, Kalakal is made in pursuit of authentic human connection.
05:22They first reached out to Glock 9 for a potential partnership after performing together last May.
05:29And that's today's wrap.
