00:01:04The world is waiting for two men to finally go at it.

00:01:07Hulk Hogan has never beaten Roddy Roddy Piper.

00:01:10He will get that chance coming up at Starrcade.

00:01:12Well you know the repercussions from this match has leveled more mountains than the Army Corps of Engineers.

00:01:20Sting, I don't know if you're in a building or where you're at.

00:01:24But Sting, I don't call too many people in this world my friend.

00:01:28But I consider you one of them.

00:01:30Well last Monday night when I see what you did to my brother and attacked him from behind.

00:02:24He's got enough guts to get in the ring with the entire New World Order.

00:03:06This man definitely went off the deep end, Tony.

00:03:09It's a very uncertain time in World Championship Wrestling, but

00:03:12one thing is for certain.

00:03:14The Starrcade will be talking about Roddy Roddy Piper and Hollywood Hulk

00:03:17Hogan, the match that you all want to miss during the course of this

00:03:20two-hour telecast.

00:03:21Let's get to the ring.

00:03:23The first match is Week at Golf.

00:03:24Two hours of Nitro.

00:03:26The holiday Starrcade season is underway.

00:03:33Larry, look at her darken the arena here.

00:03:36What a tremendous crowd we have.

00:03:38Some of the greatest wrestling fans in the world are right here in Dayton,

00:03:43Ohio, and they're going to witness the return of a man we've not seen in

00:03:48quite a while, but he certainly has one of the most spectacular entrances

00:03:52coupled with one of the most unique styles in our sport.

00:03:56Here comes Glacier.

00:03:58And Glacier, unique individual, man of best discipline.

00:04:02Here's a guy that's combined a lot of soft styles with the hard styles,

00:04:06combining with bad techniques.

00:04:08Of course, there's been some rumors of where he's been the last four or

00:04:12five weeks in some kind of special training.

00:04:15Who knows what else he's added to his very unique repertoire.

00:04:20Glacier opening up this edition of WCW Monday Nitro.

00:04:24He'll be going up against Hard Body Harris.

00:04:27Take a look at the entrance with the lasers.

00:04:30We have snow coming down.

00:04:32It is quite a spectacular entrance in itself to see this young man make his

00:04:37way to the ring.

00:04:42We got a defroster for the auditor.

00:04:45I don't know if we do or not.

00:04:46Glacier has made his return to World Championship Wrestling.

00:04:54Look at the balance and command of his body he has.

00:04:57Ever so important, no matter what athletic sport you want to pursue,

00:05:02background in the martial arts will help anything you do.

00:05:06This man took it to the extreme and combined many styles, Tony.

00:05:10You can see that exemplified in the katas that he performs.

00:05:15You know, one of the attributes of being a successful man in the sport,

00:05:19I think more than anything else, more than talent, more than strength,

00:05:24has to be heart and perseverance.

00:05:26There's one man that exemplifies that, and that is Rowdy Piper,

00:05:30a man who will scrape, who will crawl, who will do anything it takes

00:05:34to get to Nashville.

00:05:36He will be there.

00:05:37I cannot wait.

00:05:38Larry Zbysko, Rowdy Roddy Piper will be part of Starrcade,

00:05:42and he is looking for one man, Hulk Hogan.

00:05:44Yeah, well, one thing he showed me is that one thing,

00:05:46that one ingredient he needs, and what he got through perseverance

00:05:49was knowledge, but what Piper combines it with is true guts.

00:05:54He walked in front of the entire New World Order,

00:05:57and that takes guts, Tony.

00:06:00No question about it.

00:06:01Now, remember, Piper not a part of World Championship Wrestling.

00:06:05This is a personal issue between he and Hollywood Hulk Hogan,

00:06:09a personal issue they will be able to settle maybe at Starrcade.

00:06:13One thing we know, Hogan, in his tremendous career,

00:06:16his tremendous wins, has never defeated Rowdy Roddy Piper.

00:06:21And you can see the fear in Hogan's face when the name Piper

00:06:24is even mentioned.

00:06:26That's why he surrounds himself with Hall and Nash

00:06:29and the rest of the puppets BBIC buys,

00:06:33because he doesn't have the guts, or did he ever have the guts,

00:06:36to face Piper alone.

00:06:38Look at that leg sweep, the quickness from Glacier here.

00:06:41Well, quickness combined with balance.

00:06:43That's why Glacier can move so quick.

00:06:45He's always in balance.

00:06:47Covers him, one, two, three.

00:06:49It doesn't take Glacier long to dispose of Hardbody Harris

00:06:53in the opening bout here on WCW Monday Nitro.

00:06:58Boy, easy night.

00:06:59Glacier almost made that look easy,

00:07:01but to maneuver your body like that,

00:07:03sweep somebody's leg out in the wink of an eye is perfect.

00:07:07I mean, this takes years and years of discipline

00:07:11to accomplish this physical feat.

00:07:14We have some tremendous action still to come here in this delicate,

00:07:17including the total package Lex Luger will be with us.

00:07:20We understand Chris Benoit, Lord Steven Regal will collide,

00:07:24and yet another match in the U.S. heavyweight championship tournament

00:07:28that's ongoing.

00:07:30So there's a lot of great action here tonight.

00:07:32This is where the action is.

00:07:34This is where the superstars are, and we start out with Glacier

00:07:37in a tremendous win to open up this edition of Nitro.

00:10:50It is the match we all wanted to see.

00:10:52Look, Colonel Parker holding the top rope.

00:10:56And Colonel Parker assaulting Gomez right before our eyes.

00:11:00He threw his cigar on him.

00:11:03Oh, yeah, with a backhand chop.

00:11:06You know, you're right, Larry,

00:11:07about the match of the millennium.

00:11:09So much on the line.

00:11:10And, you know, I had a chance.

00:11:13My first event in pro wrestling was Starrcade 1983.

00:11:18The very first Starrcade.

00:11:20And who was in it?

00:11:21And I tell you, if you think back,

00:11:23Ric Flair won his third World Heavyweight title that night.

00:11:27So much on the line.

00:11:29But there was one man to me that stood out,

00:11:31a man who would just not go down.

00:11:33And the man was Rowdy Roddy Piper.

00:11:35He and Greg, the Hammer of Valentine,

00:11:37had a dog collar match.

00:11:39Both men were tired.

00:11:40Both men were winded.

00:11:41Both men were pushed to the limit.

00:11:43Both men were beaten and bloody.

00:11:45But Rowdy Roddy Piper did not give up in that match.

00:11:48And for me, that's a memory that will always stick in my mind.

00:11:51And here, Starrcade 1996,

00:11:53this great career that has spanned his career.

00:11:56Starrcade 1996, this great career

00:11:58that has spanned all these years,

00:12:00finally gets his shot at the one man he knows he can beat

00:12:03and the one man that knows he hasn't beat him.

00:12:05Well, you know, if you look back at Piper's career

00:12:07in 1983, dog collar matches,

00:12:09that tells you the mentality of Piper.

00:12:11He don't care.

00:12:12He will wrestle you.

00:12:14He will fight you.

00:12:15And he will keep going until he destroys you.

00:12:18That's what Hogan knows about Piper.

00:12:20That's why Hogan is afraid of Roddy Piper.

00:12:24I would agree with that.

00:12:26Gomez trying to make a tag.

00:12:28He was put into a Boston Crab moments ago.

00:12:30And now the Renegade gets the hot tag.

00:12:32And here's a right hand.

00:12:33And that knocked.

00:12:35Rougeau right off his feet.

00:12:55They're going to have a hard time competing with the teamwork of the amazing French Canadians.

00:12:59But if they can keep this movement, this speed up, they may have a chance.

00:13:04A lot of times we've said in this sport that athletic ability takes precedent overall.

00:13:08Yeah, but see, there's the teamwork.

00:13:10And ability can't beat knowledge.

00:13:12That's right.

00:13:13Knowledge, perseverance, dedication, heart, determination.

00:13:17They all really describe Rowdy Roddy Piper.

00:13:22And all those ingredients is what adds up to the total concoction

00:13:26that scares the pants off of Ed Wood, Hulk Hogan.

00:13:29Up on top is Roulette.

00:13:33Great double team maneuver by the amazing French Canadians.

00:13:36Cover one, two, three.

00:13:38The Canadians win again.

00:13:40I tell you, they continue their winning ways here in world championship wrestling.

00:13:45You can't deny it.

00:13:46The only thing you can say about them that we know for sure is that they can't sing,

00:13:50but they certainly can wrestle in the ring.

00:13:52And they are an effective tag team unit, of course.

00:13:55They've got some guidance here to help them out with the politics right there.

00:13:59Colonel Parker, amazing French Canadians.

00:14:01Easy victory.

00:14:03Let's take you now to Mean Gene Okerlund.

00:14:08We are in front of a capacity crowd here tonight in Dayton.

00:14:11Inside four weeks now to Starrcade on Sunday, December the 29th,

00:14:16the big holiday spectacular in Nashville, Tennessee.

00:14:19You know about the tickets going on sale this coming Friday.

00:14:21But Arne Anderson, I wanted to bring you out.

00:14:23Ric Flair, I was hoping he would have been here.

00:14:25But, of course, as we know, he is in rehab trying to get that shoulder back in shape

00:14:29so he can return to the wrestling wars.

00:14:31But I wanted to bring you out as a veteran that I so respect

00:14:36and touch on the subject of the man who's going to be involved in the main event at Starrcade.

00:14:41He is a man that I know very well.

00:14:43And you've met him all in the ring at one time or another.

00:14:46I'm talking about Rowdy Roddy Piper.

00:14:48Yeah.

00:14:55Before we talk about Piper, Gene, let's first talk about what we know about Hulk Hogan.

00:15:01Let's talk about perception.

00:15:03For as long as I can remember, the perception of Hulk Hogan was he couldn't be beat.

00:15:08Well, Gene, I destroyed that myth not once but twice in a row.

00:15:13That's all it was, was a myth.

00:15:15You're human, Hulk Hogan.

00:15:17Two consecutive weeks, I might add.

00:15:19Two in a row.

00:15:20Now, your perception is that illusion you're living under, Hogan,

00:15:24is that you're going to walk over the top of Rowdy Roddy Piper at Starrcade.

00:15:29Ric Flair told me years ago, Gene, the toughest fight he was ever in in his life was Roddy Piper.

00:15:36I took it with a grain of salt, and then I started to watch Piper,

00:15:39and I watched the passion with which he approached every match,

00:15:43the heart, the guts the man has.

00:15:46And then I saw what happened last week when you called Hogan out, Piper.

00:15:51You knew, Gene.

00:15:52He knew he was calling out the New World Order.

00:15:55All of them.

00:15:56And when he stood in that ring, I didn't see fear in his eyes.

00:15:59I didn't see anticipation.

00:16:01I saw a man focused.

00:16:03And, Hogan, you took your best shot.

00:16:06The New World Order, you took your best shot.

00:16:08And when you didn't take Piper out, you know what you gave him?

00:16:12You gave him what we call an edge,

00:16:14because anything that happens to you now, Hogan, is all well and good.

00:16:19It's called a receipt.

00:16:21What are you going to do when Rowdy Roddy Piper and you are head up?

00:16:25No NWO, just you, Piper.

00:16:29Piper's more man.

00:16:30He's got more guts.

00:16:32He's got more heart.

00:16:33He's a better wrestler.

00:16:35He's more everything than Hulk Hogan.

00:16:37You know, I don't know if this is just coincidence or not,

00:16:40but Arn Anderson, one week from tonight, live on Nitro,

00:16:44Rowdy Roddy Piper will be here.

00:16:47And is it or isn't a coincidence that it's going to be taking place

00:16:51in the home of the horseman, Charlotte, North Carolina?

00:16:54Well, the fact of the matter is, there's an old cliche,

00:16:57and it goes like this, Gene.

00:16:59You don't jump a dog in his own backyard,

00:17:02and you don't mess with family.

00:17:04Charlotte, North Carolina is where the horsemen live and breathe,

00:17:09and we're going to have a little get together with Piper.

00:18:04The U.S. tournament continues to crown a new United States heavyweight champion.

00:18:09Tonight here as well, Dean Malenko, the cruiserweight champion.

00:18:13Andy Guerrero will be in action.

00:18:15Arn Anderson, who you heard from earlier.

00:18:18Plus, the total package Lex Luger in action as well.

00:18:22This is where the stars are.

00:18:24This is where the big boys play.

00:18:26Speaking about big, take a look at these two big guys, Larry.

00:18:30Let me skip back to something Arn Anderson said which impressed me.

00:18:33Did you hear what he said about Piper and the four horsemen?

00:18:36Piper impressed the horsemen so much with the guts, the way he faced Hogan

00:18:41and the New World Order.

00:18:43Arn Anderson said the horsemen would be there to watch Piper's back.

00:18:46Piper could be the man with his charisma and his fortitude

00:18:50that could be a leader in Unite.

00:18:52If he can bring the four horsemen behind him, he can bring anybody together.

00:18:56You know, you talk about guts, I think everybody,

00:18:59even though Piper is not a part of world championship wrestling,

00:19:02you know, talking to all the wrestlers, you've talked to them, I've talked to them,

00:19:05they all were very impressed about the guts,

00:19:08about the courage it took for Piper to go out

00:19:11the way he went out at World War III the other night and do what he did.

00:19:15I tell you, nobody has more charisma than Piper.

00:19:18That's what Hogan hates.

00:19:20Whether he's with WCW or not, he's got what it takes to be a leader.

00:19:25I can see if the four horsemen follow him,

00:19:27all the guys will follow him.

00:19:29Okay, one week ago, right here on WCW Monday Nitro,

00:19:33Eric Bischoff came out, he said everybody in WCW under contract

00:19:37has 30 days to make their contract now part of the NWO

00:19:41to have their contract roll over, so to speak.

00:19:43And then last week, as you take a look at Scotty Riggs,

00:19:46his partner Mark Bagwell went for it, he came out.

00:19:50Let's take a look at the footage as it happened a week ago

00:19:54here on WCW Monday Nitro.

00:19:56Dan, later on in the show, after that show of force by the NWO,

00:20:06the NWO comes right back out.

00:20:08Mark Bagwell in tow.

00:20:10And they attack the Faces of Fear.

00:20:12They attack Harlem Heat during the main event matchup.

00:20:17Certainly made their presence known.

00:20:19Larry, as a result of that, Jimmy Hart, the Face of Fear,

00:20:23asking for a world tag team title shot.

00:20:26They got one at Starrcade.

00:20:28Face of Fear against the Outsiders.

00:20:30Well, that's the genius of Jimmy Hart.

00:20:32Saw his opportunity, moved right in to get his men,

00:20:35in conjunction with the Dungeon of Doom, a title shot.

00:20:39But look at Bagwell inside that ring.

00:20:41He was just the first one quick to defect.

00:20:45And if a guy like Piper with his charisma and his magnitude

00:20:49can't pull people together,

00:20:51the Bagwell incident is just the tip of the iceberg

00:20:54in terms of defection.

00:20:56I never thought I would see this.

00:20:57Take a look at what we're seeing on the right of your screen.

00:21:00The big guy, the giant, picking up Ming for a choke slam

00:21:03and putting Ming down.

00:21:05He put him down, but not out as you're seeing here.

00:21:08The Face of Fear are back in action

00:21:10against Robert Gibson and Scotty Riggs in this tag team match.

00:21:14And they got the shot at the world tag team title.

00:21:16The Face of Fear, two men who are not intimidated

00:21:20by the New World Order.

00:21:21These guys aren't intimidated by anybody.

00:21:23And as good as Gibson is and as good an athlete as Riggs is,

00:21:27they're gonna have a tough time being such a, you know,

00:21:30a new team wrestling together against these two guys,

00:21:33along with, of course, the leadership

00:21:35of the Dungeon of Doom and Jimmy Hart.

00:21:38Robert Gibson and the Barbarian

00:21:40in the center of the ring now.

00:21:42Gibson certainly has the quickness advantage here.

00:21:44First time for he and Riggs together.

00:21:46And you know Riggs is really trying to rebound

00:21:49after that attack from his partner.

00:21:51But you know, Larry, it's something we really,

00:21:53if you think about it, we had seen coming

00:21:55for a long, long time.

00:21:56They had had their problems.

00:21:58And if you think about it, all the problems kind of stem

00:22:00from the problems that he was having,

00:22:02he being Riggs with Bagwell.

00:22:03Must have been Bagwell's attitude.

00:22:05He must have had some things on his mind.

00:22:07You never know when DiBiase and these guys

00:22:09have approached somebody.

00:22:10You know, I said it for months, don't trust anybody.

00:22:13And again, Riggs, he might even be humiliated

00:22:16by the fact that he didn't realize

00:22:18it was happening with his own partner.

00:22:20To the midsection, Ming,

00:22:22such a powerful individual.

00:22:24Not only that, the face of fear,

00:22:25not only very strong, but men who don't hurt.

00:22:28A man who can take pain.

00:22:30One, two, and you have to know,

00:22:33we talk so much about how lethal

00:22:35that gigantic choke slam is from the Giant.

00:22:37You know it's gotta hurt.

00:22:39You know it's gotta be lethal

00:22:40to keep Ming down like it did.

00:22:41Well, you can get Ming off his feet,
