00:00As Aquaman 2 sinks below the waves, DC diehards begin the waiting game for a total universe
00:08relaunch in 2025, which has everyone asking, where does DC go from here?
00:16Although the DC Extended Universe, or DCEU, was never a studio section title, the nickname
00:22is being retired in favor of writer-director co-head honcho James Gunn's DC Universe,
00:29or DCU.
00:31Gunn and DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran have big plans for a marvelistic, interconnected
00:36universe that has the same actors playing the same roles across films and series, which
00:40makes sense considering that Gunn found great success in the MCU with his Guardians of the
00:45Galaxy trilogy.
00:46Unlike Marvel and its phases, Gunn's DCU will be divided into the entirely novel chapters,
00:53beginning with Humor Uno, subtitled Gods and Monsters, which takes flight in summer
00:582025 with DC's original deity in blue tights, Superman.
01:05Pearl and Hollywood breakout David Corinswet takes on the Clark Kent role in Superman Legacy,
01:11with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Skylar Gassanda as Jimmy Olsen.
01:15Gunn writes and directs this new spin that sees Superman reconciling his Kryptonian culture
01:20with his Earthbound upbringing, which actually sounds similar to Zack Snyder's 2013 launch
01:24of the DCEU, Man of Steel.
01:27Although Henry Cavill's Superman was treated as an invading alien, and judging by the DCU's
01:32Chapter One title, David Corinswet will be seen as a god, or maybe a monster.
01:37How did you know?
01:38Takes one to know one.
01:39Rounding out the cast are a duo of arch-enemies, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Sean Gunn
01:45as Maxwell Lord.
01:46And on the superhero side, Justice Leaguer's Isabella Merced is Hawkgirl, and Anthony Kerrigan
01:51is Metamorpho.
01:52Plus, Maria Gabrielle Del Correa is the Engineer, and Nathan Fillion is the Guy Gardner version
01:58of the Green Lantern.
01:59Remember those last two names, because we'll circle back around to them as the DCU expands.
02:04But first, we need to address the two series slated for 2024 that are technically part
02:08of Chapter One, but are also connected back to the DCEU via the Suicide Squad's feared
02:14leader, Amanda Waller, who is still being played by Viola Davis.
02:19Although Viola Davis played Waller in David Ayer's Suicide Squad from 2016, both the 2021
02:25soft reboot by James Gunn and his Peacemaker spinoff series with John Cena feature Davis
02:30in the role.
02:31Davis will play Waller at least twice more, in an animated series called Creature Commandos
02:35that appears to be a prequel to the Suicide Squad, since it features a monstrous team
02:39of outcasts who were first assembled in the comics to fight Nazis during World War II,
02:44and is being led by Rick Flag Sr., father of the Suicide Squad leader, Rick Flag Jr.
02:50Frank Grillo voices the Senior Flag, while David Harbour plays Eric Frankenstein.
02:54Zoe Chow is amphibious scientist Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk is the radioactive Dr. Phosphorus,
03:00and Sean Gunn returns as Weasel, who is a weasel.
03:05Davis also gets a titular spinoff of a spinoff called Waller, which takes place after the
03:10events of Peacemaker Season 1.
03:12The pivot to center this series on her character was made so that Gunn can focus on other DCU
03:17films, although he considers the series an appetizer before Superman Legacies.
03:22Gunn also promises Peacemaker Season 2 somewhere down the line.
03:25I just can't wait till this is all over so I never have to see your stupid, dumb face
03:28ever again.
03:29Okay, but let's get back to the mainline Gods and Monsters series that continues with The
03:33Authority, another team-up saga that originated outside the DC Comics continuity over at Wildstorm
03:39before being folded into DC in 2011.
03:43Similar to Suicide Squad, The Authority is a by-any-means-necessary operation that will
03:47kill in the name of making the world a safer place.
03:51And it's headed up by the liquid machinery-based Angela Spica, aka The Engineer, who we'll
03:56first see played by Maria Gabriela D'Faria in Superman Legacy.
04:01See?
04:02Told you she'd come back.
04:03You're going to be mad, but you have to listen to me.
04:06Gunn announced three other films that introduced three of the most beloved characters from
04:10DC, and also Swamp Thing.
04:12But let's talk about The Brave and the Bold, a Batman movie that explores Bruce Wayne's
04:16fractured relationship with his son, Damian Wayne, who takes up the mantle of Robin.
04:21The Flash director, Andy Muschietti, directs the film based in part on Grant Morrison's
04:25run on the comics from 2006 to 2013.
04:28Escape Crusader will be entirely separate from Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel with Robert
04:33Pattinson that's slated for 2025, as well as the two spinoff series in that universe,
04:39The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell, and a proposed Arkham Asylum series from The Staircase
04:44director Antonio Campos.
04:45The Brave and the Bold is also separate from Todd Phillips' Joker sequel, which drops
04:49in 2024, starring Oscar winners Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.
04:53There is no punchline.
04:54It's not a joke.
04:56The third of those DC darlings is Supergirl, who gets her own film subtitled Woman of Tomorrow
05:02based on the 2021 comic of the same name.
05:04Gunn says this star-spanning epic investigates the rivalry between cousins Supergirl and
05:10Superman and sounds a bit like his cosmic-bound Guardians trilogies.
05:14And I don't scare easily.
05:16Lastly, Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny director James Mangold is slated to take on
05:21a gothic horror film about the origin of Swamp Thing.
05:24Mangold, who also helmed dark comic book favorite Logan, has a Bob Dylan biopic with
05:29Timothee Chalamet and a Star Wars film on his dance card before he gets to Swamp Thing.
05:34But Gunn and Safran pledge that this is a passion project for the writer-director.
05:38Much beauty in the swamp, if you only look.
05:43Three more series are in development for Chapter One, including Lanterns, which is a True Detective
05:48style mystery series focusing on Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart, but also features Nathan
05:53Fillion returning as the Guy Gardner Green Lantern from Superman Legacy.
05:57See?
05:58It's all connected.
05:59There's also the Game of Thrones-inspired political drama Paradise Lost, which takes
06:04place on Wonder Woman's home island, Themyscira, prior to Diana's birth, and an outright comedy
06:10series based on the disgraced wannabe, Booster Gold, who time-travels to the present day
06:15and uses future tech to pose as a superhero.
06:17The greatest hero you've never heard of.
06:20Until now!
06:22And that's everything DC has in store, unless that online campaign for Netflix to buy the
06:26rights to the DCEU so that Zack Snyder can finish his Justice League sequel is successful.
06:31But that's about as likely as George Clooney returning as Batman.
