00:00All About India, for kids
00:10The flag of India is one of the most unique designs in the world.
00:15The first strip is saffron colored.
00:18Saffron is an expensive spice grown in India and Asia.
00:23The saffron stripe represents courage and strength.
00:28The white band with the blue-spoked symbol represents peace and truth in harmony with
00:35the dharma chakra, a religious symbol meaning the wheel of the law.
00:41The green stripe represents the land, agriculture, and the deep ties to the productivity of the
00:49land.
00:50The flag of India describes the values of India's people, culture, religious traditions,
00:58and contributions to civilization.
01:02Found on the continent of Asia, India is nearly 1.3 million square miles in area, about one-third
01:11the size of the United States.
01:14Yet, with a population of around 1.39 billion people, India is home to more than one billion
01:23more people than the United States.
01:27Whoa!
01:29India shares a border with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar.
01:39Most of the country forms a peninsula, which means it is surrounded by water on three sides.
01:46The terrain of the country varies from the world's highest mountain range, the Himalayas
01:51in the north, the Thar Desert in the west, and various jungles in the northeast.
01:59The Ganges Plain is a very fertile area of land that covers much of northern India that
02:05was created from soil deposited by rivers running down the Himalayas.
02:11Remember how we mentioned that India has over one billion people living there?
02:16The two largest cities by population include its capital, New Delhi, and the city of Mumbai.
02:25Hindu is the main language spoken in the country, though many Indians also speak English.
02:32Hinduism is the main religion, followed by Islam.
02:37India's history goes all the way back to around 6500 BC, when India's earliest known
02:46civilization existed.
02:49Evidence suggests that the earliest domestication of animals, including horses and cattle, the
02:55evolution of agriculture, and the development of arts and crafts all happened during this
03:03time.
03:05Have you ever heard of a language called Sanskrit?
03:09Here is an interesting fact, Sanskrit is one of the oldest languages in the world.
03:17Beginning in the 4th century AD, the Gupta Empire began.
03:22Arts, crafts, science, and math all thrived during this time.
03:29An Indian astronomer and mathematician named Aryabhata determined that the Earth rotated
03:37around its axis daily, and also scientifically explained solar and lunar eclipses.
03:46His work would help scientists and mathematicians hundreds and hundreds of years later.
03:53Here is another interesting fact, the decimal numeral system was invented in India in 500
04:01AD.
04:02Yup, that's right, turns out that decimals are super old.
04:09India went through a huge period of change, where a new religion, Islam, was introduced,
04:16and invaders from outside of the country sought to rule over the land.
04:23By the 1500s, the Mughal Empire began its reign, led by a man named Babur.
04:31The Mughal Empire built roads, religious mosques, gardens, and tombs, including the Taj Mahal.
04:41It was also a golden age of art, literature, and architecture.
04:49By the year 1600, the British East India Company was granted a charter or contract by Queen
04:57Elizabeth I to have exclusive rights to trade with India.
05:02In this way, the British Empire began to slowly take control of India, eventually incorporating
05:10the country into its empire in 1858.
05:15In 1877, Queen Victoria declared herself Empress of India.
05:22British rule lasted for several decades until 1920, when a civil rights leader named Mahatma
05:29Gandhi led a campaign of non-violence against the British government in order to seek independence.
05:37This movement eventually led to the end of British rule, and in 1947, the British Indian
05:45Empire was divided into two independent dominions, India and Pakistan.
05:52Today, India is a bustling country with dense urban areas and rural villages and everything
06:01in between.
06:03Life is pretty different in the villages than it is in the cities or towns.
06:08In fact, there are some areas where girls do not attend school.
06:14Tourists travel from around the world to see sites such as the Taj Mahal, which is
06:21one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
06:24The Ganges River is also a special place.
06:28At over 1,500 miles long, the Ganges River is named after the Hindu goddess Ganga, and
06:37people travel from all over to bathe in its waters.
06:42The Ajanta and Ellora Caves are also another wonder.
06:47Dating back to the 2nd and 6th centuries, these man-made caves were carved into the
06:53hillside by hand using a chisel and hammer.
06:58One of the most important celebrations in India is the Hindu festival Diwali, which
07:04is also known as the Festival of Lights.
07:09Diwali takes place in October and signals the start of the new year in the Indian calendar.
07:17Everyone lights lamps in their homes to celebrate.
07:21India is also home to many different kinds of animals.
07:25Remember when we mentioned how cows are special in India?
07:30It is literally illegal to harm a cow, so there are cows wandering everywhere, even
07:38on the streets with cars.
07:41Other animals include elephants, pythons, river dolphins, lions, tigers, rhinos, and
07:53many more.
07:54Here is an interesting fact.
07:57In the Sundarbans forest, tigers swim in the same rivers as dolphins, sea turtles, sharks,
08:07and crocodiles.
08:10How's that for wild?
08:13Now that we have gotten to know more about India, let's take a little quiz.

08:21India is three times the size of the United States.
08:27False.
