01:00Dark and grim, yet strangely beautiful,
01:07Hellboy's Sword of Storms perfectly captures the visual style of Mike Mignola's comic books.
01:17The movie's Hellboy in Japan plot allows for plenty of atmosphere,
01:21the characters are spot on and the dialogue has plenty of sly humor.
01:31Ron Perlman and the rest of the voice cast,
01:33many of whom were featured in the live action movie, couldn't be better.
01:37It all adds up to a winner for Hellboy fans,
01:40and even those not familiar with the character.
01:43Darwin Cooke's comic book made a thrillingly smooth transition to the screen.
02:13Largely set in the 1950's, Justice League The New Frontier
02:17is basically a retconned look at how DC's silver age heroes
02:21might have both come into existence and come to work with each other.
02:37The threat is a familiar one, an alien menace,
02:40but it's handled with great style.
02:49Especially impressive is the manner in which Cooke's unique visual style
02:53is faithfully transferred into animation.
03:11The title may emphasize Superman and Batman,
03:14but Supergirl is an equal partner in this outing,
03:17and that's all for the good.
03:29Serving as an introduction to the girl,
03:31Cooke's character is a bit of a mystery.
03:41Superman Batman Apocalypse also includes one of the most powerful
03:44and impressive portrayals of the evil dark side on screen.
03:52The action sequences, especially those on Apocalypse,
03:55are nothing short of glorious,
03:57but even they pale compared to the final showdown back in Smallville.
04:11Critics who think that most portrayals of Wonder Woman lack sufficient power
04:15haven't seen this film.
04:17The amazing Amazon is given her due in the action sequences,
04:21some of which are quite brutal.
04:30The film's plot is a bit of a mystery,
04:32but it's also a bit of a fun one.
04:41The filmmakers excellently balance the character's innate warrior spirit
04:46with her equally strong desire for peace.
04:56They also give the representation of the mythological aspects of the character
05:00a palpable mysticism.
05:10Cary Russell and Nathan Fillion provide superb voice performances,
05:14and the chemistry between Diana and Steve is a delight.
05:35An adaptation of the famous Death of Superman story arc,
05:39Superman Doomsday features the epic battle between the Man of Steel
05:43and the monster known as Doomsday.
05:57That alone promises plenty of action,
05:59but Doomsday also shows what happens after Superman's death,
06:03and that's what really gives the film its impact and importance.
06:10Adam Baldwin voices a marvelous Superman,
06:13and James Marsters is an absolutely impeccable Lex Luthor.
06:25Superman's iconic status has rarely been demonstrated to better effect on film.
06:31Metropolis is under my protection, now and forever,
06:35over my dead body.
06:49Frank Miller changed comics history with the Batman The Dark Knight graphic novel.
06:54The film version therefore has a lot to live up to,
06:57and while it's not quite perfect,
06:59it still is an amazing accomplishment.
07:14Part 1 lags occasionally,
07:16largely because of the necessary exposition,
07:19but once the film takes off,
07:21it's a rocket that can't be stopped.
07:30Because I do what they can't.
07:32What kind of authority is that?
07:38Watch out especially for the battle between Batman and Superman,
07:41and the final confrontation with the Joker.
07:44They're astounding.
07:46Freely adapting the Tower of Babel comic storyline into film,
07:49Justice League Doom manages to bring together an impressive collection of heroes and villains.
08:15Yet it also manages to slyly keep the focus on Batman's contribution to the Justice League,
08:20making it more than just a slugfest.
08:28The large array of characters is effectively used,
08:31and plenty of key moments for the major players.
08:34There's something here to please fans of all the heroes involved,
08:37and that's no small feat.
08:46Number 3
08:47Batman Under the Red Hood
09:04The death of Jason Todd, the second Robin,
09:06was a seminal event in the comics world.
09:16Batman Under the Red Hood
09:18is a sensational adaptation of the later storyline
09:21that detailed what happened after Todd's death.
09:28At times harrowing and gripping,
09:30Under the Red Hood is a Joker story,
09:32but with a twist that gives the film its power.
09:39John Wick and the Joker,
09:42John DiMaggio is a fascinating Joker,
09:48and Bruce Greenwood is splendid as the caped crusader.
09:56Brandon Vietti's intense direction
09:58imbues the film with decidedly cinematic momentum.
10:12Number 2
10:13The Incredibles
10:18Brad Bird's highly original computer-animated film
10:21looks at a family of super-powered heroes
10:23who aren't allowed to use their powers.
10:33Forced into living a humdrum everyday life,
10:35The Incredibles examines what it means to be special.
10:42And how expressing one's unique abilities can impact others,
10:46positively and negatively.
10:48The Pixar flick includes some of the most stunningly animated action sequences
10:52ever put on screen.
11:00And it's a thrill ride,
11:02but it's also an engrossing and a little bit sad.
11:12Before we reveal our top pick,
11:14here are a few honorable mentions.
11:42The Hulk has come to Asgard.
11:51Show Townsville just what our powers can really do!
11:57Ah, the new boy.
11:59Ears are too long and I miss the cape,
12:01but not too shabby, not too shabby at all.
12:04Woof!
12:11Number 1
12:12Batman Mask of the Phantasm
12:23Although produced way back in 1993,
12:25Batman Mask of the Phantasm
12:27is still the animated superhero film
12:29against which all others are measured.
12:42Get away from me, you freak!
12:44It's not just that it has a compelling plot,
12:46although it certainly has that.
12:48It overflows with expertise in practically every area.
12:51You're too late, Batman!
12:53There are 20 miles of tunnels under this place
12:56and they're all filled with high explosives!
12:59From the unusual and dramatic shot compositions
13:02to the caricatured visual style
13:04and the voice cast that couldn't be bettered.
13:07I've seen the guy.
13:08He looks more like the Ghost of Christmas Future.
13:11Nowhere near as cute as Batboy.
13:14Batman Mask of the Phantasm
13:16is clearly the work of inspired creators
13:18working at the top of their form.
13:20Now hold on to your hat
13:22and watch those valuables!
13:24It's going to be a bumpy ride!
