00:17But it also raises some serious questions about the vocal stylings of some of the characters.
00:22While the movie's main character is Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Sergei Kravinov, who becomes
00:28The trailer's main voiceover comes courtesy of his father, Nikolai Kravinov, played by
00:32Russell Crowe.
00:33Some fans are having a hard time with his delivery.
00:36"'Embrace who you really are, son, and you will become a legend.'"
00:39YouTuber NandoVMovies wrote on ex-formerly Twitter,
00:43"'The last line of this trailer is borderline unintelligible.
00:46Just listen to it and see if it sounds like the word it apparently is.'"
00:49The replies offer up some pretty funny interpretations of Crowe's reading of the word legend, including,
00:55"'All I heard was, and you then become a pretzel.'
00:58And, "'It's clearly, and you will become a wetsuit.'"
01:01These fans aren't the first to call out Crowe's accent, but it at least seems like people
01:04are having fun with it.
01:05One wrote of the first trailer, released all the way back in June 2023,

01:18The New Zealander has indeed played many characters with accents over the years.
01:22He's shot two versions of his Thor-loving Thunder scenes to incorporate two versions
01:27of Zeus' accent, and the East Midlands English he used in Robin Hood features on Looper's
01:31list of worst on-screen accents of all time.
01:34"'If you're trying to build for the future, you must set your foundations strong.'"
01:40Judging by fan response, it looks like his attempt at a Russian accent in Kraven the
01:43Hunter might also risk joining that list.
01:46In the comics, Sergei Kravinov is a Russian aristocrat, which reflects the way he sounds
01:51in many adaptations.
01:52From the Kraven of Spider-Man the Animated Series to the ones on the spectacular Spider-Man
01:57Animated Show and the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 video game, the character tends to have
02:01a distinctive accent.
02:02"'I have been in your shadow for hours, but you sense nothing.'"
02:08Yet Taylor Johnson's version doesn't have one, despite his father's heavily-accented
02:13speech.
02:14"'I stared death in the face, and for the first time, I saw my true self.'"
02:20Fans weren't happy to find out that the live-action Kraven is missing this important element.
02:24One wrote,
02:25"'He's not even doing a big crap Russian accent.
02:27That is Kraven's entire thing!'
02:29The second trailer barely includes any Kraven dialogue at all, just one line where the title
02:34character speaks Russian.
02:35The unintelligible dialogue and odd speech choices are reminiscent of another big burly
02:40guy in a superhero movie from just over a decade ago, Tom Hardy's Bane in The Dark Knight
02:45Rises.
02:46"'I merely adopted the dark.
02:49I was born in it, molded by it.'"
02:53Hardy based his Bane based on the Irish traveler accent of boxer Bartley Gorman, but the end
02:58result was initially so difficult to understand that director Christopher Nolan had to tinker
03:03with the sound mix before the film's release.
03:05More recently, Channing Tatum's wild Cajun accent as Gambit in Deadpool and Wolverine
03:10almost immediately became a full-blown meme.
03:13But the fan complaints and jokes about the dialogue didn't hurt either movie.
03:16Both turned out to be runaway smash hits, with The Dark Knight Rises bringing in well
03:21over $1 billion worldwide and Deadpool and Wolverine breaking the same box office benchmark
03:26shortly after its release.
03:28So at least Sony doesn't have to worry about that particular issue sinking Kraven the Hunter.
03:32Other factors?
03:33Well, we'll see when the movie finally hits theaters on December 13, 2024.
