Us earthquake 4.4
Transcript
00:00Right now at 5, breaking news, a SoCal shaker, a quick but intense 4.4 magnitude earthquake
00:13hit today near Highland Park, rattling homes like this one in Pasadena.
00:17Good evening and thanks for joining us on KCAL News at 5 on CBS Los Angeles.
00:22I'm Pat Harvey.
00:23And I'm Leslie Marine in for Chauncey Glover, we're also streaming live on CBS News Los
00:27Angeles.
00:28Well, the quake struck at about 1220 this afternoon and was felt from Bakersfield all
00:33the way south to the Mexican border.
00:35And we have team coverage on the quake.
00:37Let's start with KCAL News reporter Jeff Nguyen, live in Highland Park near where the quake
00:41was centered.
00:42Jeff.
00:43So, Pat, people who work in this food court tell us that the shaking was so strong, it
00:49felt as if a car had crashed right outside.
00:51On top of that, the monitors up here were shaking back and forth, and as we walked through
00:55this food court, we were told that the lights in the ceiling were swaying back and forth.
01:01On the other side of this is this piece of glass outside this restaurant right here.
01:06At one point, the glass was flexing back and forth, and some of the neighbors in this area
01:12were able to capture the shaking on camera.
01:18A security camera recorded the shaking inside Kindred Boutique in Highland Park, while a
01:22few doors down on Figueroa Street, Kitchen Mouse restaurant was shaking pretty good.
01:28Check out the vintage cookie jar rocking.
01:31Sous-chef Will Sage was in the kitchen.
01:33And all of a sudden, kitchen had a nice big shake, didn't last super long, but kind of
01:39freaked our dishwasher out.
01:40The shaking was strong enough to send two customers ducking under a table.
01:45Nearby Triple Beam Pizza, the customers in the dining area, ran out.
01:49The lights were moving.
01:50The glass that's over here on this restaurant, the whole thing, it looked like a funhouse
01:54mirror.
01:55They were moving that pretty good.
01:56Even well after the magnitude 4.4 quake, the disco ball had a story to tell.
02:01That's perfectly still normally, but yeah, that's still moving.
02:04Back at Kitchen Mouse, the employees were calm behind the counter.
02:08Director of Operations Cody DeFrate was in the bakery at the time.
02:11We had some guests sitting in there that kind of jumped up really quick.
02:14In that space, you could hear all the coffee cups clanging and all the glass hitting each
02:17other.
02:18After the shaking stopped, DeFrate made his rounds.
02:21People.
02:22I mean, honestly, like everything else is whatever, you know, but just make sure people
02:28are okay.
02:29Everyone was okay, including Will Sage, who grew up in the area.
02:33I should be more earthquake ready than I actually am.
02:35I might take a few more things off the shelves.
02:40And we are about five miles from the epicenter.
02:42The good news, however, is that there are no reports of any major damage or injuries.
02:47We are live in Highland Park, Jeff Nguyen, KCAL News.
