Washington defensive coordinator Steve Belichick speaks after day four of fall camp about the necessary skills needed to play the nickel/Husky position, along his early thoughts on the defense and incoming nose tackle transfer Logan Sagapolu.
Transcript
00:00So, it's definitely not just my defense.
00:03What are the skills that someone playing nickel for
00:06you guys needs to have that's maybe a little bit different than corner or safety?
00:10Yeah, I mean, you're just closer to the formation,
00:11closer to the action a little bit.
00:13So, in the run game, you gotta be ready to show up.
00:16And there's a lot of space to cover the floppish either when he's in there.
00:20So, I think toughness, good tacklers, and the ability to cover the play to start.
00:27Is that, do you think you'll look at Harrington there or
00:29is he more on the back end, do you think?
00:31Yeah, we're kind of just mixing all the guys in right now.
00:34Guys playing in different spots.
00:35It's only been two days, so certain guys have been featured a little bit more in
00:39one place than the other.
00:40But as we go, we'll move guys around and bump them around and
00:44see what they can handle.
00:45This early in training camp,
00:47just what have you been most impressed with with your defense so far?
00:50Just the energy and the willingness to learn,
00:54taking it from the classroom to the field.
00:56Those guys care, they're working really hard, and I really appreciate that.
01:01And where do you see the most room for growth?
01:03In everything, if they just keep that attitude, keep that mindset,
01:07I think that we'll all really improve and grow together.
01:10Segapolo looks like a defensive player,
01:12even though he's played only offense for the last four years.
01:15Looks like he's got the moves and stuff.
01:16Who's- Logan Segapolo?
01:18Yes, sir.
01:19It looks like he's making a nice transition,
01:21because he's only played offense before.
01:23Looked like he had defensive moves that looked kind of natural.
01:26Yeah, for sure.
01:27Yep, it's tough to notice that he was on the other side of the ball, but
01:32I'm sure he has some knowledge and
01:35experience in terms of what those guys are doing over there.
01:37And he's been doing a great job for us.
01:39All right.
01:40All right.
01:41Appreciate it, guys.
01:42You guys have a good day.
