Why drivers should be aware of parking scams

00:00Sometimes, it's hard enough being in an unfamiliar area and trying to find a car parking spot.
00:06But recently, this bane may have been worsened by the fact that new criminal activity across
00:11the UK has seen fake QR codes scam unsuspecting drivers.
00:16This comes as the RAC has advised drivers to be vigilant and to watch out for parking
00:20payment scams.
00:22The insurance company suggests only to pay with cash, card or official apps.
00:26In July, it was reported that there was a big spike in false QR codes on parking machines
00:31in parts of Northumberland, South Tyneside and Pembrokeshire, which all appear to use
00:36the Pay by Phone app to collect parking payments.
00:40What happens is, the false codes lead people to enter their car details into fraudulent
00:44websites, which are specifically set up to steal payment information.
00:48A spokesperson for the RAC also added that the so-called quishing scam can lead to drivers
00:54getting caught out twice, wherein not actually paying for the parking they thought they
00:58were paying for, can then lead to a hefty fine from the council as well.
