PH, China trade barbs over collision of coast guard ships in Escoda Shoal

Tensions flared anew in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) after Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels collided in Escoda (Sabina) Shoal during a resupply mission on Monday, Aug. 19.  PCG ships BRP Bagacay (MRRV-4410) and BRP Cape Engaño (MRRV-4411) were en route to Patag (Flat) Island and Lawak (Nanshan) Island to bring supplies to troops guarding the Philippine-occupied features when they were subjected to “unlawful and aggressive maneuvers” by the CCG, according to the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS). 00:06both Philippine Coast Guard vessels. At approximately 324 a.m. while navigating

00:12about 23.01 nautical miles southeast of Escoda Shoal, BRP Cape

00:18Ingano was subjected to aggressive maneuvers by CCGB 3104. This resulted in

00:26a collision with a starboard beam of the vessel creating a hole on the deck.

00:43We are of course disappointed again with this development coming from the

00:48preliminary understanding because we have a preliminary understanding with

00:52them in so far as Second Tomas Shoal is concerned or BRP Sierra Madre is

00:58concerned but this despite this preliminary understanding which we hope

01:04was the first book first page in a new chapter between Philippine and PRC

01:11relations we have this another incident. I can fairly say that this is the biggest

01:17damage a structural damage that we have incurred as a result of the dangerous

01:23maneuver carried out by the Chinese Coast Guard. The size of the suspected

01:27area that is being reclaimed remains to be the same. This means that we remain to

01:33be successful in preventing the small scale reclamation from being completed.
