00:00Unless you've been living under a very remote rock, or been stuck in a museum exhibit for a long time,
00:07you know that we live in the digital age.
00:10Everything is e-something.
00:12E-mail, e-cigarettes, e-bay, e-harmony.
00:15And the courts of our great land are no different.
00:18E-filing and e-service have become more than a novelty in the legal system.
00:22They are crucial components.
00:24And in the case of e-filing, mandatory.
00:28In 2012, Florida began requiring every court document, in nearly all types of civil cases and beyond, to be e-filed.
00:36This is done through the Florida Courts e-filing portal at www.myflcourtaccess.com.
00:43There are practical reasons for mandating e-filing in the court system.
00:47Before the internet, filing papers with the court meant either mailing them or going down to the court,
00:52waiting in line, and making sure it got stamped with the correct date.
00:55However, if the deadline was fast approaching, regular mail would not do.
01:00And, like now, you could only hand-deliver them during the hours court is open.
01:05Now, with e-filing, you don't have to leave your couch.
01:08Plus, it's considered filed once you receive your online confirmation.
01:12And you have until midnight on the day it is due to get done.
01:15Perfect for the procrastinating night owl.
01:18Now, service, which is where every document is sent to every party involved in a case,
01:23is also subjected to the same pre-internet problems as filing.
01:27Today, though, you can send documents to all the parties through e-mail.
01:31It's faster, easier, and cheaper than printing everything out and sealing them in envelopes.
01:36However, there are rules for how e-mails should be presented and formatted.
01:40Check with the Florida Rules of Judicial Administration for the right information.
01:45Or, just have LegalYou worry about these details for you.
01:48It's kind of our thing.
