00:00Hello everybody, Tereno here, and welcome back to another episode of my International Tank Tech Tree series.
00:05In the last episode we dealt with Argentina. Since then I've done a bit of a reworking of the tech tree.
00:13Only a few minor changes and one extra vehicle. Today we're looking at Australia.
00:18Some of you who may have watched my British Tank Tech Tree series will probably realise I've already looked at Australia.
00:24But I think Australia could also go in the International Tank Tech Tree as well.
00:29I'll leave a link to the original episode where I dealt with Australia in the British Tank Tech Tree series.
00:35Now just to give a little background of Australia during World War 2.
00:39Quoting from one of my books, World War 2 the Directory of Weapons.
00:43In 1939 Australia's armed forces had virtually no modern tanks and lacked almost any form of heavy engineering background to produce them.
00:51Even an automobile industry was lacking. So not exactly the obvious choice for building tanks.
00:57But there are a few tanks and armoured vehicles on here.
01:01And Australia did come up with some very good designs during the war.
01:05Australia of course was on the side of the Allies during World War 2.
01:09And after the war they were generally aligned with the Western nations.
01:14During the war they fought in all of the theatres. European, North African, Pacific.
01:20But when it came to the Pacific they did have to rely on themselves a little bit.
01:24Because obviously America had just been involved in Pearl Harbour.
01:28And it was going to take a while for America to come to Australia's aid.
01:32Britain was across the other side of the world and tied down with the Germans.
01:36So they had to rely on their own designs a little bit.
01:39And they did come up with some very good designs.
01:44One other thing I should just really quickly mention.
01:48You may notice my voice changing a little bit in the video. Or the audio quality.
01:52Basically I started recording this yesterday when I was a bit under the weather.
01:56It shouldn't affect the video but just if my voice changes halfway through the video that's why.
02:01But without any further ado let's get straight into the episode.
02:05Now the first Australian tank we're looking at is the cruiser tank Sentinel.
02:09Which came in a few different variants. The AC1, 3 and 4.
02:13I'll explain in a minute why there isn't an AC2.
02:16Basically Japan needed to get lots of modern equipment. They didn't have any modern tanks.
02:21And again quoting from my book.
02:23As there was no local expertise on the subject of tanks.
02:26One engineer was sent to the United States.
02:28And an experienced engineer was obtained from the United Kingdom.
02:31So with just two engineers, not much in the way of industry capable of even producing the tanks.
02:36Australia went to design a tank.
02:39And it actually turned out very well.
02:41The AC1, Australia cruiser 1, had a 2 pounder gun.
02:45Two 7.7mm Sheen guns.
02:48All cast hull.
02:49Which was pretty impressive. I think that was actually quite rare back then.
02:52The armour was something like 25-65mm.
02:55And it had three Cadillac car engines joined together.
02:59Which gave it a maximum speed of 30 miles an hour.
03:02Which is pretty good.
03:04It only took 22 months to produce.
03:07From paperwork to actually prototypes.
03:10Which was even more impressive because again quoting from my book.
03:14All the facilities to build the tank had to be developed even as the tanks were being built.
03:18So they were developing the factories and the tanks at the same time.
03:21And it was a pretty good tank for 1942.
03:24Maybe a little bit behind on the gun.
03:27But for a first attempt it's very good.
03:29Now around this time another model was proposed.
03:33The AC2.
03:34But by late 1941 Japan was starting to get quite aggressive.
03:38Pearl Harbour happened.
03:39So Australia decided to just focus on one tank.
03:42Because there was a real fear that Australia could be invaded.
03:45Things were quite desperate back then.
03:48So they had to get some sort of tank produced very very quick.
03:51So they just focused on the AC1.
03:53Once the AC1 was produced they did realise it wasn't going to be all that good for long.
03:58It was going to become obsolete quite quickly.
04:00So they decided to produce another model.
04:03The AC3.
04:04Which had a 25 pounder gun in the turret.
04:07The 25 pounder gun is actually an artillery gun if I'm correct.
04:1187.6mm field gun.
04:14I'm not sure what the anti-armour effect of it is.
04:18But I'm assuming that must be pretty big.
04:20I mean it's the same calibre as the German anti-aircraft gun.
04:23It must have a decent high explosive projectile.
04:27Or armour piercing projectile.
04:29But after this they did realise it wasn't going to be that good against armour.
04:33Obviously they hadn't seen the armour of Japanese tanks.
04:36So they produced the Sentinel AC4.
04:38Which was a prototype fitted with the 17 pounder.
04:41This was mid 1943.
04:43So I think it was the first Allied tank to get a 17 pounder gun.
04:47But apparently at first they didn't have a 17 pounder gun to put on the tank.
04:52To see if it could take the 17 pounder gun.
04:54So they strapped two 25 pound guns onto the turret.
04:57And fired them to see how the recoil would be.
05:00Apparently this exceeded the recoil of the 17 pounder.
05:02Presumably it was successful because they went and fitted a prototype with the 17 pounder.
05:06And you know it was a very good tank.
05:08I think it would have been an excellent tank.
05:10Especially in mid 1943.
05:12With the decent armour and the 17 pounder gun.
05:15It was probably better than all the other Allied tanks around at the time.
05:18Maybe a bit hyperbole.
05:20But you know it was a very good tank.
05:22But by this point Shermans were being produced in massive numbers.
05:25So there was enough to equip Australia and all the other Allies with Sherman tanks.
05:29So the industry was needed for other more important stuff.
05:34And so the Sentinel projects were shelved more or less.
05:37You know they were used as training tanks and prop tanks in a movie.
05:41I think it was Rats of Tobruk or something.
05:43It's a shame the Sentinel tanks weren't produced in large numbers.
05:46I think they should have really been produced in Britain.
05:49A quote from one of my other books.
05:51The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Military Vehicles.
05:53Which in return is quoting from a 1946 report of the Select Committee for National Expenditure in Britain.
06:01No tank produced in 1943 was worthy of action.
06:04While those manufactured earlier were inferior both technically and tactically to German tanks.
06:09That's describing British tanks.
06:11So I think this would have been a very good tank if produced in Britain.
06:14You know with a production license or something like that.
06:18But you know they were still very good tanks.
06:21I think they'd be very good in War Thunder.
06:23Now where would I actually put the Sentinel tanks in War Thunder?
06:27Tiering wise I'd put the Sentinel AC-1 in the light tank line at tier 2.
06:32The AC-3 and 4 I'd put in the medium heavy tank line.
06:36The AC-3 at tier 3 and the AC-4 at tier 4.
06:40The AC-3 probably could go in the self propelled gun line.
06:43But it seems more like a tank than a self propelled gun if I'm honest.
06:47Battle rating wise.
06:49The Sentinel AC-1 I'd probably put 2.3 to 2.7.
06:55Because it's got very good armour.
06:57But the gun isn't all that great if I'm honest.
06:59So you know that's going to bring it down quite a bit.
07:02For the AC-3 with the 25 pounder.
07:04I couldn't really find many penetration figures for it.
07:07The only figures I could find were something like 17mm at 400 yards.
07:11Which is about 400 metres.
07:13Which is similar to the KV-1 with the CIS-5 gun.
07:17Which is battle rating 4.7.
07:20So probably about 4.7.
07:23Somewhere between 4.3 to 5 really.
07:264.7 being the middle point.
07:29Although without better statistics or figures.
07:33It's a bit hard to get a reliable battle rating.
07:36Thankfully the AC-4 is a bit easier to deal with.
07:39Because one of my books.
07:41Artillery compared and contrasted.
07:43Has some figures for the 17 pounder.
07:45Apparently it can penetrate 130mm at 915 metres or 1000 yards.
07:51Doesn't say what ammunition that's with.
07:53And I'm pretty sure there's one type of ammunition.
07:55That can penetrate like 200mm at that range.
07:58But with the stock ammunition or the figures given in the book.
08:02That would probably put it around tier 4.
08:05Like I've listed it in the tech tree.
08:08And probably about rating 5.7 to 6 around there.
08:12I think that's a fair place for it to be added.
08:14On the tech tree.
08:15And I hope these can be added into the game.
08:17They're very good tanks.
08:19And hopefully we will see them in the international tech tree.
08:21Or British tech tree.
08:23Depending on how Gaijin wants to do things.
08:25But I think they should definitely be added.
08:27Now the next vehicle on our list.
08:29Is an Australian self-propelled gun.
08:31The Yeramba.
08:33I do apologise if I've mispronounced it.
08:35Basically the Australians took an M3 Grunt.
08:39And converted it to a self-propelled gun.
08:42Which had a 25 pounder gun mounted on it.
08:45But this was done in 1950.
08:48Which is why we've got one of those weird situations again.
08:51Because it's got the 25 pounder gun.
08:53Which isn't exactly tier 5 material.
08:55So I've put it at tier 3.
08:57Which helps to fill out tier 3.
08:59Thankfully for me.
09:01I've bolded and underlined it.
09:03Because I'm not sure whether it should go there.
09:05Or if it should even be added.
09:07Let's look at the stats first.
09:09It's got the 25 pounder gun.
09:11Which again I've only got some figures for.
09:13Something like 70mm penetration at 400m.
09:16That's the only figure I can find online.
09:19And on my books list any figures.
09:21There was also two 7.7mm Bren machine guns.
09:25It had something like 38mm of armour.
09:28Which, you know, is ok.
09:31But not great.
09:33And it could do about 25mph.
09:35And it had 6 crew.
09:37A commander, driver and 4 gun crew.
09:39Like I mentioned it was put into service in 1950.
09:42Which is where the difficulties come from.
09:44Because like I said it's not really tier 5 material.
09:47But it's a post war tank.
09:49But I think the best place to put it would be tier 3.
09:52And battle rating wise.
09:54It should be able to do with most of the early Panzer IV's.
09:57But it will struggle against the Panthers and Tigers.
10:00So probably around 4.7 to 5 battle rating.
10:03That's really the fairest place I can think of it.
10:06At the moment.
10:08And like I said I bolded and underlined it.
10:10Because it may not even be a good fit for the game in general.
10:13But, you know, it would be nice to see it added.
10:16You know, one more Australian vehicle into the international tech tree.
10:20Or British tech tree again.
10:22Depending on how Gaijin does it.
10:24You know, I thought it would be nice to at least let you know it existed.
10:27So it would be nice if it could be added.
10:29But I can understand why Gaijin might decide not to add it.
10:32Now the next and last vehicle on that list.
10:35I wasn't sure whether to add at all.
10:37It's the Rhino Heavy Armoured Car.
10:39Now I've put it as a premium.
10:41Though it could theoretically go in the armoured car line up.
10:45But the reason I put it in premium is because it was a prototype.
10:48Only one or two were actually built.
10:50Basically it's an armoured car.
10:52Which is armed with a two pounder gun.
10:54The 40mm gun.
10:56It's got 30mm of armour.
10:58I'm not really sure what the speed is.
11:00I can't really find any information on it online.
11:03None of my books have it listed.
11:05Apparently it had four crew.
11:07A commander, driver, gunner and loader.
11:09So where would this go in War Thunder?
11:11Like I've said already, I've put it in the premium line up.
11:14Though it could go in the armoured cars line up.
11:16I've put it at tier 2.
11:18Battle rating wise, well it's got the two pounder gun.
11:21Which according to my book, World War 2 the Directory of Weapons.
11:24It has armour penetration of 53mm at 450m.
11:29Now this is about the same as the Panzer III J.
11:33The early model.
11:35It's slightly better than the T-50 I believe.
11:38And slightly inferior to the M5A1 Stuart.
11:43Though only by a little bit.
11:45So they're all about 2.3 to 2.7.
11:48So I think that would be the best place for the Rhino heavy armoured car.
11:52About 2.3 to 2.7.
11:54You know, it's got decent armour for an armoured car.
11:57It's got a good gun.
11:59And well, I think it would be a nice little armoured car to have in the game.
12:02Like I said, I've put it in the premium line up.
12:04Because it was a prototype that was only built in one or two numbers.
12:07But I think it would be nice to have in the game.
12:10Or you know, in International Tank Tech Tree.
12:12Or British Tech Tree.
12:14Depending how good I can do it.
12:16But you know, it would be nice to see it in the game.
12:18So now that we've looked at the potential vehicles Australia could bring to the International Tank Tech Tree.
12:24Where would Australia fit into the game itself?
12:26With regards to events and realistic and simulated battles.
12:29The most obvious event I could think of is Japan actually invading Australia.
12:34And Australia having to fight back and defend itself with possible allied support.
12:39That would give an excuse to have the tanks into the game.
12:42Because obviously with Japan invading they would actually start producing them.
12:46You could also do maybe events like the Sentinel actually being put into mass production.
12:52Or some of the other vehicles put into mass production.
12:54Maybe being involved in the invasion of Japan.
12:58I suppose another event you could do is all the Western aligned nations against all the communist nations.
13:03And a Cold War gone hot type situation.
13:06Or maybe even a resurgent China rising up and invading all its neighbours.
13:10I know some of these ideas are a little bit far-fetched.
13:13But we have got some far-fetched ideas already.
13:16You know, Britain and America versus Russia in the Crimea for example.
13:20But you know, Australia could be a good fit for the realistic and simulated battle events.
13:26And there are some good alternate reality events that could be added into the game with Australia.
13:31So that's it for today's episode. I hope you enjoyed it.
13:35I will be a little bit busy for the next month or so because of exams coming up.
13:39But I will be trying to get some of these out at least once or twice a week.
13:43These sorts of episodes.
13:45They'll probably be a bit shorter than my usual videos.
13:48But I'll try and get something out there.
13:50But as usual, leave likes and subscribe.
13:53Leave feedback. Could always do with more feedback.
13:56Whether about the video or the tech tree.
13:59Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoyed the video.
14:01And I'll see you next time.
