00:00Nightly greetings one and all, yours truly, Sharmza Spina here for tonight's PTV News
00:10Now.
00:11Tonight's top story.
00:13President Ferdinand R. Marcus Jr. has instructed Health Czar Secretary in a statement released
00:17by Malacanang earlier today.
00:20The President ordered DOH officials led by Secretary Ted Herbosa in a huddle yesterday
00:25to keep close tabs on locations or places that are highly susceptible for mpox exposure
00:30or infections.
00:31Keeping a close eye on areas with high presence of the immunocompromised, who according to
00:36Herbosa are the most at risk for monkeypox exposure or infection.
00:41The President's directive comes at the heels of the World Health Organization's recent
00:45declaration of the disease as a public health emergency of international concern after an
00:51outbreak of the illness in the Congo and surrounding countries in Africa.
00:56In the meantime, in afternoon developments today, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte confirmed
01:00reports the first case, otherwise known as Patient Zero, paid a visit to a dermatologist
01:05and massage and spa center in Quezon City on two separate occasions on August 8th and
01:1011th respectively.
01:12More so, the Mayor said there are 28 individuals of the 41 total contacts who have been declared
01:17as Type 1 cases or those identified as close or direct contacts of Patient Zero and that
01:23contact tracing is well underway along with the dispatch of a quick response team formed
01:28to prevent the spread of the disease.
01:33After being on the defensive since Russia launched its evasion of the country in February
01:372022, Ukraine in a breathtaking turnaround and counteroffensive has gone on the attack
01:43and has claimed some 1250 square kilometers of the Kursk region in Russia.
01:48The U.S. Pentagon correspondent Carla Babb fills us in with the latest developments.
01:57Russia's Kursk region on the border with Ukraine under attack.
02:02Ukraine destroyed multiple bridges in the region this week to block supply routes.
02:08Russia firing back into the Ukrainian border region of Sumy, damaging cars but causing
02:13no casualties.
02:15The Pentagon now seeing indications that Russia is moving small numbers of forces into Kursk
02:21to repel the Ukrainian offensive.
02:24Russia has really struggled to respond and you continue to see some Ukrainian advances
02:30in that regard.
02:33Russia says thousands of civilians have fled the Kursk border region.
02:38A Ukrainian journalist who just returned from the seized town of Sudzha, telling VOA, Ukraine's
02:43forces took the Russian town with little collateral damage.
02:47I was surprised to see that the city itself moved very calm and literally nothing was
02:53going on.
02:54It means that the Ukrainian forces, they advanced even further from there.
03:01The raid this month now the biggest invasion of Russia since World War II.
03:06Analysts say the strikes give Ukraine the momentum.
03:10It now enables the Ukrainians to put pressure on Russia.
03:15It's an embarrassment for the Kremlin.
03:18But exactly how this move will shape the war inside Ukraine remains unclear.
03:24A lot of the forces that the Russians are using to defend against this incursion into
03:29the Kursk region are coming from Russia.
03:32They're not being withdrawn from the front line in Ukraine itself, although some small
03:38number of soldiers have been withdrawn.
03:41Ukraine said it kept its plan secret from allies because many of them might have tried
03:46to disregard it as unrealistic.
03:48The Pentagon says the United States will continue to strongly support Ukraine's fight for freedom.
