Woman and two children survive armed attack by estranged husband in Sydney's west

A woman and her two children have survived a terrifying encounter in Sydney's west with her estranged husband, who was armed with a gun. Police say he travelled from Victoria to hunt them down. He also shot a random member of the public, who is now recovering in hospital.

00:00A woman was seeking refuge at her parents' Auburn home with her two children.
00:08They're from Victoria and she was trying to escape her husband.
00:12But last night, he found them.
00:14The male became enraged and smashed the front window of the premises and forced open the
00:18front doors but did not enter the premises.
00:21The 50-year-old went to the house just after 10pm, armed with a gun.
00:25He pointed it at his father-in-law, who is in his 70s, and pulled the trigger.
00:29But it failed to fire.
00:31He then turned the gun towards his mother-in-law and fired a shot into the house, which missed
00:36everyone inside.
00:37We heard the bangs and the people were screaming.
00:42Very scary.
00:43I'm very thankful at this stage that we don't have another DV-related homicide on our hands.
00:52The man left the home and tried to carjack another man and his teenage daughter nearby.
00:58He fired a shot into their car, hitting the 55-year-old driver in the neck.
01:03He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

01:11The gunman was found dead in a nearby creek several hours after he targeted his family.
01:17The couple had been together for 23 years and have two children, a 20-year-old son and

01:24They were both here last night when their father fired a gun into the home.
01:29There's a lot of shock and distress in the family at the moment, and the wealth of support
01:34is going around the family to ensure that we're providing everything humanly possible.
01:38Police say there were no recent reports of domestic violence involving the family in
01:42New South Wales or Victoria, but detectives are still investigating what led them to flee
01:48their home state.
