Transcript
00:00At this time, media technology has a big role in our lives, work, and connection to each other.
00:07Many organizations are promoting media and information literacy
00:12with the goal of being informed and empowered by people in the digital age.
00:17As a part of the goal of strengthening freedom of expression and democracy,
00:22it strengthens the creative economy of the country.
00:26The Quezon City Government organized the Maki Fiesta 2024 with the help of the University of the Philippines.
00:33This is a series of events that will bring many personalities
00:37to show the importance of the collaboration of media key players
00:41such as artists, vloggers, storytellers, and journalists
00:46in shaping our media landscape today.
00:50Let's find out how this will help in becoming smarter in the online world
00:55and talk about other details about this event.
00:59Here in MIL 101.
01:05And to give us insight and additional details about this event,
01:09we have with us Sir Bert Apostol,
01:12the Head of Public Affairs and Information Services Department of the Quezon City Government.
01:17Good morning, sir. Welcome to Rising Shine Philippines.
01:19Good morning. Thank you for inviting me, Prof.
01:21Thank you very much for being a part of our program.
01:23We want to know, sir, what is this Maki Fiesta 2024?
01:27It's a media festival.
01:29Okay.
01:29But we expanded it to include the creative economy as a whole.
01:33Because we know that the media is also running in the world of the creative economy.
01:39So we expanded it to include everyone.
01:43So that not only the media will talk about their issues.
01:48This is the first Maki Fiesta ever?
01:49Yes, this is the first city government-organized media festival.
01:55Why did we have this Maki Fiesta?
01:56What triggered you to do this?
01:59We usually talk to the mayor.
02:01Then we used to discuss the issues and concerns of the media.
02:07Because the media are close to his heart.
02:09Those who lost their jobs.
02:10Yes, those who lost their jobs.
02:11So we thought, why don't we have a media summit to talk about issues in the media?
02:18Along with those who lost their jobs, media viability.
02:22A lot of TV and radio networks are based in QC.
02:26So if there's an incident there, QC is affected.
02:29Yes, because there are employees in the city.
02:32Yes, a lot.
02:33A lot of creative economy partners are in QC.
02:36Directors, actors, etc.
02:38So that's one thing.
02:39Then the issues in the media, like spreading fake news.
02:44And then the vloggers who sometimes go to the city.
02:50They feed a kid in a fast food chain.
02:54And then they feed him.
02:56He'll get 300-500 views.
02:58Then he'll get a million views.
03:00But the kid, after he's fed, there's no intervention.
03:03He really wasn't helped.
03:04Correct.
03:05So those issues, why don't we sit down and talk about these issues?
03:10That's what the mayor said.
03:13We'll organize a media summit.
03:15This is the first-ever attempt of a city government
03:18to host and organize a media festival for everybody.
03:23Yes, because people think it's just nothing.
03:26As long as we use Facebook, that's already media.
03:29But we don't know the depth in it.
03:32So we want to know also, how will Maki Fiesta help these issues?
03:37Are there any programs that Maki Fiesta will do?
03:40Tell us more.
03:41For example, he has a lot of topics.
03:43For example, AI.
03:46Okay.
03:47How does it affect us now?
03:49Because sometimes it becomes a tool.
03:50Advantage and disadvantage.
03:51Yes.
03:52And then fact-checking.
03:53Okay.
03:54And then how to utilize the tools that are available now.
03:59So there are plenary sessions.
04:00It's a combination of plenaries and breakout.
04:03We have about 70 speakers for two days.
04:06Two days?
04:07Yes.
04:08Will the audience choose?
04:10In the first day, you'll have a plenary.
04:12Simultaneous, three breakout sessions.
04:15Then after that, plenary again.
04:17Then three breakout sessions again.
04:18You'll choose which one to attend.
04:19That's nice.
04:20But the whole day, there are different topics.
04:23Isn't it a bit tight?
04:24It's a bit tight, to be honest.
04:26For example, one of the good topics,
04:28the TITOS and TITAS of TikTok.
04:30Okay.
04:31How the older generation uses TikTok and
04:33go with the target audience.
04:36To reach out and engage more people.
04:39The power of storytelling.
04:42Topics like that.
04:44We also have Robert Labayen to discuss about
04:47how the songs of ABS-CBN
04:49resonate with all of us.
04:53There are many.
04:54Ding Dong Daddies will talk about his passion.
04:58He has a platform that he'll launch here
05:02about calamity.
05:03He'll launch it here.
05:06There are many.
05:07We have Mark Naley.
05:10We have vloggers.
05:11So very prominent names and personalities.
05:14Yes.
05:15So there are many.
05:16On all forms.
05:17Yes, all forms.
05:18We have PETA.
05:19We have DAQUILA.
05:20We have Miss Lisa Dino.
05:23So it's really a creative economy approach.
05:26Film, broadcast, advertising, public relations.
05:31Radio.
05:32And online media.
05:33Online media.
05:35It's good that we are here
05:37because many of us are easily fooled
05:39by the use of social media
05:41and other forms of media.
05:43And that's why this is the way
05:45to be smart in using it.
05:47One way in promoting
05:49media information literacy.
05:51But of course, you've mentioned
05:53the different prominent names here.
05:55What could be the key takeaways
05:57on those people who will be joining this?
05:59And who can join this?
06:01Actually, the learnings here
06:03is that we learn from each other
06:05what are our best practices.
06:07So that together,
06:09we can promote
06:11the creative economy.
06:13Because it can be a driver
06:15of the economy.
06:17For example, in Korea,
06:19they have a strong creative economy.
06:21Yes, they invest in it.
06:23Correct.
06:24And in this META Festival,
06:26we got an idea from a town
06:28in Italy, Perugia.
06:30Their idea is that
06:32if there's a media festival like this,
06:34journalists from all over
06:36the world,
06:38will go there.
06:40The town will be closed.
06:42So tourism will be boosted
06:44with this media festival.
06:46So eventually, that's our plan.
06:48But now, we're trying to keep it
06:50to a minimum of
06:52500 to 600 participants.
06:54Okay.
06:56That's not enough.
06:58As of now, we have so many.
07:00And even from other cities?
07:02Yes, PIOs of other cities
07:04have been invited.
07:06So they have many
07:08roles here.
07:10As a member
07:12of the media before,
07:14up until now, and now you are a part
07:16of the Public Affairs Information Office
07:18of the Quezon City, how will
07:20this MAKI Fiesta 2020 help
07:22with the concept of
07:24freedom of expression and democracy?
07:26Yes, we know
07:28that Mayor Jai is the founder
07:30of Freedom of Expression.
07:32This is our platform
07:34to discuss
07:36how we can further
07:38at least
07:40promote the idea that
07:42all of us have the right to
07:44freely express ourselves, but we have to use
07:46it responsibly.
07:48So all of us can help
07:50in disseminating
07:52the right
07:54information.
07:56This is a very important thing
07:58that we can continue
08:00even after this media festival.
08:02The public service is still there
08:04but in a very unconventional
08:06way. And kudos
08:08to your office.
08:10In order for the people,
08:12those who would like to join, when
08:14will this be held?
08:16What updates can
08:18we get from the social media pages?
08:20Go ahead.
08:22Actually, as of now,
08:24we're
08:26fully...
08:28Our registration,
08:30we limit it to
08:32500 to 600.
08:34But as I speak now,
08:36we're more than 800 attendees
08:38already who registered
08:40in the QR code.
08:42This is free for two days.
08:44So we're in charge
08:46of everything.
08:48You have to register in the QR code.
08:50We posted it on our
08:52official Facebook page
08:54and with our partners.
08:56Pro Productions Fight
08:58by Atom Arawlyo, Puma Podcast
09:00by Robby Alampay,
09:02International Media Support by Leche De Los Reyes.
09:04These are the four
09:06major partners here.
09:08We're posting updates
09:10at the same time. So right now, we're more than
09:12800 attendees already.
09:14How can we reach 600?
09:16We can break out
09:18in the sem break out sessions.
09:20When is it again?
09:22Tomorrow and Saturday at UP Diliman.
09:24We're very
09:26lucky because at UP Diliman,
09:28we were allowed to
09:30use the three
09:32major venues. The Jimenez
09:34Theater, the Jimenez Gallery
09:36and the Aldaba Theater.
09:38It's for the breakout session there.
09:40That's very exciting.
09:42Maybe for other details,
09:44you can look at the Quezon City Government.
09:46Yes, the Quezon City Government.
09:48Thank you so much, Sir Bert,
09:50for sharing with us
09:52your initiatives for Maki Fiesta
09:542024. It's very important
09:56that we can attend these events
09:58so we can know
10:00more about the media
10:02and information, especially
10:04those who disseminate it
10:06and work to spread
10:08the right information.
