00:00Triathlon is a sport where you cannot hide.
00:08Consistency is key and you have to be very committed to become the best athlete you can be.
00:18If I take it off, I can hear absolutely nothing. Zero.
00:23So when I go to bed, I get the best sleep ever because I can't hear a single thing.
00:29Everything that I hear is completely robotic and it's hard for me to understand what you're saying, which is why I depend on it reading.
00:37When I was very little, I wasn't proud of my deafness. I didn't like being different.
00:44Running became a stress relief for me. I used to take part in cross-country races, relays,
00:52and it was only when my friend came along and said, oh, we can do a triathlon, and I knew I can cycle and swim, I just jumped onto those three sports.
01:03Triathlon is tough.
01:06When you dive into the water, the first hundred metres is one of the hardest challenges. We call it a washing machine.
01:13Everyone's fighting for their spot, arms around, legs are kicking, every man to themselves.
01:20You spend most of your time on a bike. You've got to make sure you get the hours and the mileage in.
01:26So I spend about 13 hours ranging between 300-400 kilometres a week.
01:34Being able to cross over the finish line first place with deaf on it makes me feel very proud
01:41just because I'm doing it for the deaf community, I'm doing it for myself.
01:48If I had the choice of being a normal person, have my hearing back, or just being the way I am, I would choose the way I am.
01:57The challenges that I had to go through made me feel stronger and willing to succeed.
02:03And for myself, being the best athlete I can be, representing Great Britain in the Deaf Olympics,
02:10higher up in the all-body competitions, get that pro licence, we can say, we as deaf athletes, all deaf people, can do it too.
