Sir Keir Starmer on Thursday pledged to build an NHS that is “fit for the future” after a landmark report warned the health service is in “critical condition”.The report by independent peer Lord Ara Darzi, completed in nine weeks, found that the nation’s health had declined over the past 15 years and that significant reform would be required to return the NHS to peak performance.

00:00The last Labour government reformed the NHS to deliver better outcomes for
00:04patients and better value for taxpayers. Conservative governments then undid that
00:10good work, which only goes to prove once again that only a Labour government can
00:16reform the NHS. And my Labour government has a huge mandate for change. We're
00:22mission-driven and I think the themes of this conference today are fitting for
00:27this moment. Challenge, change and hope. Because the challenge is clear before us.
00:36The change could amount to the biggest reimagining of the NHS since its birth.
00:42And the hope, well that's what's really exciting and galvanising about this
00:49moment. Because if we get this right, people can look back and say this was
00:57the generation that took the NHS from the worst crisis in its history, got it
01:04back on its feet and made it fit for the future.
