00:00For me, some people were asking, like,
00:01how do you manage if someone's wearing the same dress?
00:03Like, you just don't care.
00:04Like, there's room for everyone.
00:11Hi, I'm Carla Welch.
00:12And today I'm going behind the looks with Who What Wear.
00:15Oh, America Ferreira in Roland Marais
00:19for the London premiere of Barbie.
00:21And sadly, this was our last look before we went on strike.
00:26And we had such an amazing, fun time
00:30doing the Barbie press tour.
00:32And America's been my client for almost a decade,
00:35over a decade.
00:36And it was so fun to get to do, like, this blockbuster.
00:40And if you've seen the Barbie movie, of course,
00:42you know what a huge role and amazing piece of it
00:46America has.
00:47And for her to get to shine was so fun.
00:51And it was really fun because we didn't wear pink.
00:54There was all these fan theories why.
00:57And there was actually not that much.
00:59Like, we didn't really premeditate it.
01:02But then we kind of ran with it.
01:03And, you know, she did wear pink once.
01:05But this was such a glamorous look.
01:07And she felt like a movie star.
01:08And it was just, there was a whole lot.
01:10I feel very emotional, I think, because some clients you have
01:14are, like, the fashion girls.
01:16And every house wants to dress them.
01:18And then other girls are just, like,
01:20these amazing icons in their own space.
01:22But for America to all of a sudden get all this, like,
01:25credit for, like, how amazing she looked
01:27and how amazing she acts.
01:29Not that I know looking is not, that's not the point of it.
01:31But it felt like a real triumph of a press tour for us.
01:35And I was, like, very, like, I felt very emotional.
01:38I was so proud of it.
01:39And I'm so proud of her.
01:40And we went out with a bang.
01:43Ooh, what was my favorite?
01:44My favorite look for the Barbie tour?
01:47Oh, I loved this, actually, Tanya Taylor look she wore
01:50in Korea.
01:51It was, like, black pleather.
01:54No, I love them all.
01:55That's my rule.
01:56I kind of have to love every look.
01:57It doesn't have to be the gown on the red carpet.
02:00I like the press junket looks, too.
02:02I, like, love every.
02:03And actually, we had a look in London
02:05that was a real showstopper.
02:06It was this red dress.
02:07And it had a big heart in the back by Alex Perry.
02:10OK, so this is Tracee Ellis Ross at the Vanity Fair Oscar
02:15party wearing Beaumont.
02:16This look was really exciting because we saw it on the runway
02:19and we both were like, oh, let's wear this look.
02:22But it was also, like, kind of a, not a risky look
02:25because I don't think anything with Tracee is a risk
02:27because she's just fashion.
02:29But, you know, a hat, a pant when girls are wearing,
02:32like, gowns can kind of feel like a bit of an outlier.
02:36But it came in.
02:38Loved the huge Boucheron earrings.
02:41And it was, like, a real moment.
02:43And it was not an easy outfit to navigate
02:46because this was actually, like, this little capelet.
02:49And it had a bodysuit underneath.
02:51And then the pants with the sash.
02:53And then, of course, like, the hat
02:55in that room of tons of celebrities
02:58was also kind of amazing.
02:59But I went with Tracee.
03:00It was so much fun.
03:01And I would just look for the hat.
03:03Oh, my gosh.
03:04You know, Tracee is just one of my, like,
03:07most fun, wild collaborators because we both kind of had
03:11the same reference points and same love of fashion.
03:14But, you know, she is Tracee Ellis Ross.
03:16She's the daughter of Diana Ross,
03:17who's, like, the musical icon of the world.
03:22So, you know, she was born with it.
03:24But I think one of my favorite, favorite,
03:26favorite looks with Tracee, and I
03:27think one of the looks that really
03:28kind of changed a lot of direction on the red carpet
03:31was the pink Valentino Haute Couture we did for the Emmys.
03:36The pink humongous dress was one of my favorite moments.
03:41And it was my favorite moment because also, you know,
03:43we went to that couture show together.
03:45And Pierpolo is a dear friend.
03:47And it was just something we hadn't seen before
03:50on the carpet when we, when she wore it.
03:52There weren't the big voluminous dresses.
03:54And it was also a risk.
03:56We're like, are people going to get it?
03:58And then we were like, fuck it.
03:59I don't care if people get it or not.
04:01There is nothing that Tracee Ellis Ross won't
04:05do when it comes to fashion.
04:07Ooh, here's Gal Gadot in Ferragamo.
04:11And this was one of these looks that,
04:13when I saw it on the runway,
04:16I was like, I need to have that look.
04:17And I didn't, at the time, know who was going to wear it,
04:20but I knew I wanted it.
04:22So I'm a little relentless.
04:24I mean, if you talk to showrooms and the designers,
04:26they'll say I'm very relentless.
04:28Respectful, but completely relentless.
04:30Like when I want to look,
04:31I just badger people to get it.
04:36Because I know that I'm going to bring
04:37their creation to life.
04:39Like when a designer, it's my responsibility as a stylist
04:42to like interpret the looks so the designer
04:45feels really happy.
04:46So Gal was going to Tidum in Brazil
04:51and it's a humongous showcase for Netflix
04:55for her movie, Heart of Stone.
04:57And I was like, this is the perfect place for this dress.
05:02And we like wore double Tiffany, Elsa Peretti cuffs
05:05and the bone cuff, but in black.
05:08Hair was slick.
05:09Cause she plays like a superhero secret agent
05:13and just the shine, the shine was like out of control.
05:16You know, I'm at the point where when I work
05:18with someone new or someone comes to me
05:20and wants to work with me, it's always very flattering.
05:22And you know, Gal and I had a meeting
05:24and we just hit it off.
05:26And I feel like I've known her forever.
05:28But it's exciting.
05:29It's exciting to like, I always want to be inspired
05:32and I want to work with women and men who inspire me
05:35and who are doing amazing things in the world.
05:37And she's one of them.
05:38Oh, here we have Vanessa Kirby in Schiaparelli Couture
05:42for the New York premiere of Mission Impossible.
05:44It's kind of perfect.
05:45Like this look is so simple, but not simple.
05:49So actually this bit here on her arms
05:51is this beautiful velvet sort of half cape
05:55and just the most beautiful silk bias dress
05:59like a very nineties feeling.
06:02And you know, when I started working Vanessa
06:03she wanted to kind of like literally and figuratively
06:06like wear her hair down a little bit
06:08and she's quite sexy.
06:10And I think this really like showed this like classy
06:13kind of reserved, like icy princess,
06:17but very like sexy girl all at the same time.
06:20Talk about sexy.
06:21This is Olivia Wilde in Chloe for the Met Ball
06:26for Karl Lagerfeld, as you might all know
06:30that Karl Lagerfeld was the designer of Chloe.
06:32So this is an exact replication of a Chloe dress
06:36that Karl designed.
06:37And it's actually one of the most famous Chloe dresses.
06:40It has the guitar on front.
06:41And you know, we didn't think we were going to do
06:43the arm cuffs, the wrist cuffs.
06:46But when we got there, we were like, it's the Met Ball.
06:49It's a costume ball.
06:50Like you got to add a little bit to it
06:52and kind of amazing.
06:54And a funny story is someone else at the Met Ball
06:58wore a vintage version that they had altered a bit.
07:03People were like, oh my God, the drama.
07:05It's like, no, it just shows like how amazing
07:08one dress can be worn several different ways.
07:10I mean, the other person's was black, but yay.
07:14For me, some people were asking like,
07:15how do you manage if someone's wearing the same dress?
07:17Like, you just don't care.
07:18Like, there's room for everyone.
07:19And that's, we don't, I don't subscribe to that culture
07:22of like who wore it better or best dressed or worst dressed.
07:27Like, that's so mean.
07:28Like, how about you're there
07:30and you're representing the designer you're with.
07:32You know, Olivia was there with Chloe.
07:35Like the house of Chloe where he works.
07:38So they sort of, these are the dresses
07:40that they wanted their guests to wear.
07:42So I think we were with the definitive kind of team on it.
07:47And that's what we did.
07:48And they didn't have a problem with it and neither did I.
07:50Oh my God, this was such a moment.
07:54My lady Paulson and Holland Taylor
07:58at the Louis Vuitton show in Paris.
08:00And this was, I mean, I love these two so much.
08:03Sarah Paulson and I go so far back.
08:06We have such an amazing relationship.
08:09Lady P, like that's who I dress like.
08:11We dress alike.
08:13And her and Holland were going to the Louis Vuitton show
08:16for Nicolas Ghesquière.
08:18And we had a fitting and I said,
08:21look at this amazing jacket.
08:22And she's like, oh, I love it.
08:24And I was like, Holland, what I need you to do
08:26is grab her by the zipper in Paris.
08:29And she did.
08:30And of course it went viral and it was so funny.
08:32And it was great.
08:34I mean, they're so lovely and loved and how amazing.
08:38How amazing.
08:39They were kind of the stars of the show to be honest.
08:42Oh, I knew this one was coming.
08:45So this is Justin Bieber in custom Balenciaga
08:48for the Grammys and might add an ex Carla beanie.
08:51That's one of my, he wears my beanies like crazy.
08:55But the story behind it is that
08:58he was wearing a different look.
08:59He was actually wearing this like Bottega look.
09:02Sorry, Bottega.
09:03And Hailey, we styled her in this beautiful
09:06like very 90s silk white slip dress.
09:10And she was like, you can't wear that to Justin.
09:12You gotta be a little dressier.
09:13And he was nominated for so many Grammys.
09:15And he's like, Carla, what do we do?
09:17And I said, well, I have this custom suit ready to go.
09:21And he's like, cool.
09:23And he put it on and I was like,
09:24and here are the shoes, these Crocs.
09:26And he's like, right on.
09:28And he put it on and he walked out the door.
09:30You know, we take a lot of hits,
09:31but it was so incredible.
09:34I love this look so much.
09:35But like, man, do people like come for you
09:37if they don't like it?
09:39And I'm like, bring it on.
09:41This is like fashion.
09:42And he's fashion.
09:45I think like the memes that went around
09:47for like her being in her like cute little red dress
09:50and him being in his sweats is like,
09:53he was there supporting her.
09:54You know, here's an amazing guy supporting his woman
09:58who's, it's her turn to shine.
10:00Hailey has that in Rode,
10:02which is such a great new beauty brand.
10:04And you know, when you're the star as Justin Bieber is,
10:09like people fall into support and he was supporting her
10:11and he is who he is.
10:13Let him wear his fucking sweats.
10:14Let him wear his sweats.
10:15Sorry, I did that swear word one.
10:17Let us wear his sweats.
10:18They were going to Krispy Kreme.
10:20This is when we won the Met Ball.
10:23This is Hailey in custom Saint Laurent
10:26for the Gilded Age Met Ball.
10:28I love working with Saint Laurent and Anthony Vaccarello
10:31because he's very specific.
10:32He has a very like, that's his,
10:35that's his, it's his, it's his design.
10:38You're not asking him to make something for you.
10:40He will make you the dress and,
10:42but we were talking and the Met Ball is fun to prepare for
10:45because there's the theme.
10:46And so you can really lean into the theme
10:48depending on who you're going with.
10:50And, and it's always nice to give a nod to it, right?
10:52So we, I read this story about like a young Vanderbilt
10:55in the twenties or turned in New York
10:59and descending the staircase
11:00in a slip white dress with feathers.
11:03And so I think we said that to maybe to Anthony and he,
11:06this is actually a version of a dress
11:08that Jerry Hall wore in the early nineties
11:11in one of Mr. Saint Laurent,
11:14Monsieur Saint Laurent's last shows.
11:17This dress was so beautiful and the cape,
11:19she threw it and had a real moment.
11:22And those tights were so hard to get done
11:25because we needed a perfect, not too,
11:29not too dense, not too sheer.
11:31Like those were a lot of work,
11:33but it's all in the details, people.
11:35Ooh, I think the common denominator between all my clients
11:38and maybe this is the common denominator
11:40of my approach and my styling is that I want my clients
11:43just to look like the best version of themselves.
11:45I actually want to look like I haven't even been there.
11:48That's there, it's them doing it.
11:52I think, really, if you look at my client list,
11:55everyone looks really different.
11:57I will never pick favorites of any of my clients
12:00or any of my looks.
12:02I love them all equally like a parent loves
12:05all their child equally.
12:08Although my mom loves me the most.
12:09I know it, she told me.
12:11Thank you so much for watching.
12:14Please let me know your favorite
12:15and don't send me any Justin Grammy hate.
12:19That look was amazing and you know it.
12:22I'll see you next time.
12:23Bye.
12:24Bye.
