00:00:00Cracking races since Formula One returned to Austria's A1 ring and there have been three different winners
00:00:06Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Häkkinen and Eddie Irvine
00:00:09Irv the Swerve has had to withdraw today, but returning for us alongside Roadrunner Martin Brundle
00:00:15Welcome back Murray Walker
00:00:17Thank you very much Jim and I can tell you that it's all very homogenous here in the commentary box
00:00:22Martin and I pulling as one
00:00:25And my thanks incidentally to the good people in the Sherbourne Hospital in Chichester
00:00:29Who's made it possible for me to be here. Now you're looking at
00:00:34Heidi who is
00:00:36David Coulthard's fiance, but you were looking earlier on at the grid
00:00:41And let me tell you some of the things to watch when this race starts watch
00:00:45Michael Schumacher fourth on the grid behind the all McLaren front row. He's on the left-hand side
00:00:51Remember all the criticism there's been and in my opinion some of it is justified and some of it isn't about his tactics recently
00:00:59What's Jacques Villeneuve the lightning starter in the BAR?
00:01:03He's in the seventh grid position behind his teammates Ricardo Zonto
00:01:09Starting higher than he's ever started before
00:01:12Watch poor Luciano Berti. My goodness that chap's having everything happen to him
00:01:17And now he's starting from the pit lane in the Jaguar after he had qualified down in 21st position
00:01:23He's got a hydraulic leak, which I hope they've fixed
00:01:26Jenson Button and Ralph Schumacher in the two Williams are starting right back on
00:01:32Rows 9 and 10 in this 11 row grid
00:01:37So the question is what is going to happen at the start because if bigger hacking that could get away well
00:01:43From pole position and it's not interfered with by the unfortunate David Coulthard who hit him last year
00:01:49It could be a very very tough race for Michael Schumacher, especially as he's got Rubens Barrichello in front of him
00:01:57Well, there's more to the front of the grid than may at first meet the eye
00:02:01Of course the two McLaren drivers appear to be very similar in place
00:02:04They appear also to have the fastest cars on the racetrack
00:02:07Very very closely followed by Barrichello in the Ferrari. He's clearly faster than Michael Schumacher
00:02:13So what will Ferrari do with Barrichello because they'll want to clear him out of Michael Schumacher's way
00:02:19Schumacher doesn't have the pace and therefore Ferrari will have to try something interesting to beat
00:02:26McLaren because they can't beat them in on a straight in a straight fight today in terms of their raw pace
00:02:32Over and above that the two McLaren drivers both need to win the race
00:02:36So if they've got to play team tactics against Ferrari
00:02:39They've also got to play selfish World Championship tactics for their own to their own ends to try to close that gap on Michael Schumacher
00:02:46So it's a fascinating struggle. We're going to see at the front
00:02:50Yeah, the interesting thing could well be a very long stint for a one-stop Michael Schumacher
00:02:56I don't know that it's one stop, but I do know that after he done his exploratory lap
00:03:01He came in they put the Ferrari in the garage and they filled it up with the last
00:03:06Possible drop of petrol that they can get into it and while they were in there
00:03:10They made an adjustment to the front wing. So he's gone out. He's assessed the conditions the
00:03:16Conditions are extremely good at the moment actually the track temperatures about 19 degrees
00:03:20I think that just demonstrates that Michael has struggled to get his car working
00:03:25He's even amazingly admitted that he's just not hooked up this weekend
00:03:28But if you adjust a car when you're going to the grid it never quite seems to pay off because you don't attack those out laps
00:03:35Those formation laps in anything like the same way and you tend to get the wrong information coming back through the steering wheel
00:03:42And nonetheless Michael still trying to fine-tune his car
00:03:45And we're all very aware of just how hard he can push on every corner of every lap of a Grand Prix
00:03:51So never count Michael Schumacher out
00:03:53I would imagine Barrichello could well be on a lighter fuel load
00:03:57To try and get in there and spoil the race of those two McLarens and keep Michael Schumacher in the picture
00:04:03Well, whatever happens today Michael Schumacher
00:04:06Even if he scores no points and David Coulthard scores 10 points by winning the race
00:04:12And it would be his fourth win this year if he did
00:04:15Michael Schumacher is still going to be leading the World Championship when this race finishes because at the present moment
00:04:20He's 12 points ahead of David Coulthard and he is 18 points ahead of the man
00:04:26You're looking at the rejuvenated it would seem Mika Häkkinen who's been away on holiday
00:04:32And surprisingly to me he says they've readjusted the car. He's a double world champion. What can they find to do now?
00:04:41Well, they've certainly been struggling to get that car working as Mika would like
00:04:46I think they're having to protect their rear tires as they all huddle off down to turn one for this green light lap
00:04:54This lap incidentally counts as one lap of the Grand Prix and I think to protect their rear tires
00:04:59They're having to make these cars understeer a little bit more and I suspect that that does not suit
00:05:05Mika Häkkinen as well as it does some drivers and also
00:05:09Obviously as I've said before you're either giving pressure or you're taking pressure
00:05:13There's no middle line on this and Coulthard has managed for four races. That's Bertie going out of the garage
00:05:19He had to get in the spare car. He had a hydraulic failure on the car that was on the grid
00:05:24He was so calm and collected wasn't he when I was talking to him down there and since then
00:05:28They've established a hydraulic leak. So Bertie will start
00:05:32A plum last. Well, we've just been riding with Alexander Hutz the Austrian in the Benetton
00:05:3714th on the grid the car you saw in front of him was Nick Heidfeldt's Prost and you've also heard
00:05:44That there are very strong rumors that the Prost team has been sold
00:05:49allegedly to
00:05:51A Canadian consortium or an extremely rich individual, but I emphasize that that is not official
00:05:57We'll just have to wait and see
00:05:59I think it's a fairly solid rumor though, Murray. I think that one's pretty much
00:06:03happening
00:06:04so
00:06:05The weaving Mika Häkkinen
00:06:07On Bridgestone tyres like all of them. They're all on the soft compound
00:06:12Except for Heinz-Harald Frentzen who seems to be starting down in 15th position partly as a result of that yesterday
00:06:21the two Williams drivers
00:06:23Ralf Schumacher and Button are both on the medium, which is the harder of the two compounds and the two Arrows drivers
00:06:31Pedro de la Rosa and Jos Verstappen both of whom who went extremely well
00:06:36In the warm-up this morning are also on the medium compound and I don't think it's going to make a heck of a lot of difference
00:06:44Unless the weather conditions change very dramatically indeed
00:06:48So it is a 71 lap race Mika Häkkinen slots into position
00:06:52David Coulthard pulls across to the right hand side of the grid the rest of them take up their positions
00:06:58And of course Häkkinen and Coulthard at the front of the grid
00:07:02Hope that the people behind them won't be too long getting into position so that their clutches are not affected
00:07:07Now the right hand side of the grid here Murray
00:07:09Their right is very much off the racing line and I expect it to be quite dirty
00:07:14So look on the left hand side of the grid Michael Schumacher
00:07:19And watch the lights now. Are you ready?
00:07:24Then we will
00:07:29Begin
00:07:30David Coulthard rolling slightly
00:07:33And gets right up alongside Mika Häkkinen. It's a right hand turn the first one David Coulthard could get through
00:07:39No, he doesn't Mika Häkkinen chops across the front of David Coulthard and that's a Ferrari spinning
00:07:45That's Barry Kello gone through and I think that's Michael Schumacher. It is Michael Schumacher, Jarno Trulli and Ralph Schumacher
00:07:53And Michael fingering the clutch
00:07:57Clutch levers under the steering wheel and consternation in the Ferrari garage
00:08:01They may well have to red flag this
00:08:03They can cover it under the safety car the medical car there that start to the back of every Grand Prix
00:08:08Yes, the safety car is out there not red flagging it. It's the the silver Mercedes estate
00:08:13We saw is the medical car world championship leader
00:08:16Michael Schumacher somehow has kept the engine going in that and we've got wave yellows all the way around the circuit
00:08:22A little sc board now Michael stalled there
00:08:25That's a that's Michael pulling his car back onto the racing line. I wouldn't be at all surprised
00:08:30He is going to be destroyed when he sees the safety car procedure
00:08:34He will want a red flag procedure so he can have a restart
00:08:39And Carlo Fisichella was down there as well out of the Benetton, but now it's Hackett and leading Coulthard second
00:08:47Salo in the Sauber is in third position and he started ninth on the grid. What is happening?
00:08:53I don't know. That's Fisichella running back and Schumacher's car is being craved off the track as is the Benetton
00:09:01So that is two retirements including the man who was leading the world championship
00:09:06And we'll still be doing at the end of this race
00:09:08But it's the worst possible situation for Michael Schumacher and the race with two McLarens in the lead
00:09:16Following the safety car. Mikasalo third, Pedro de la Rosa and Jos Verstappen
00:09:21Are fourth and fifth of the two errors and somehow rather Johnny Herbert has gone up to sixth position
00:09:27And he started 16th. Martin, here you go. The Jensen button is seven
00:09:31So in amongst all that carnage, the two McLarens got away beautifully
00:09:34Look, Michael Schumacher comes up the inside and gets a tap from what must be the BAR of Villeneuve
00:09:41And Schumacher pushed out of the first corner. Zonta we think actually ran into him. I think it was Zonta
00:09:46Yes, and then of course you've got a traffic jam. Michael Schumacher kept his engine going
00:09:51Pulled it back on to the racetrack and switched it off again
00:09:54It looked that's how it looked to me anyway
00:09:56But he could not get them to bring the red flags out
00:10:00They've deployed the safety car and look Michael Schumacher somehow
00:10:04After a very poor start gets up the inside of Barrichello
00:10:08But it's going to be Zonta that tags him at the rear and puts him into a spin
00:10:13Look, Zonta going too deep into the corner, Barrichello taking to the gravel as did several others
00:10:18And that's why people at the tail end of the field made such huge gains on that first lap
00:10:24And one of the people who suffered was Jacques Villeneuve who was seventh on the grid
00:10:28He's down to 15th position because you can see he's having to finagle his way around the side of the stationary Ferrari
00:10:35Safety car is in this lap. So the safety car, here we can see another angle and yes indeed
00:10:41It is Zonta that does not break early enough and gives Michael Schumacher quite a firm shove
00:10:47And at that point Barrichello's hovering around the outside wondering whether there'll be any space for him
00:10:52And he has to go onto the grass and then it's pandemonium behind him
00:10:56Well, it's always silly to make predictions and certainly at this stage of the race
00:11:01But it looks as though it has handed it on a plate to McLaren with Hacken and leading, Coulthard in second place
00:11:08Micasalo whose car performance of course doesn't hold a candle to the McLarens in front of him
00:11:14But the interesting thing is that Johnny Herbert is coming up through the field now
00:11:18He is in fifth position in the Jaguar, there he is
00:11:21Going through is Barrichello who's taken two places on this lap. Barrichello is the man to watch in the Ferrari
00:11:28It's all down to him, but he's got to get past Jenson Button. He's got to get past Johnny Herbert
00:11:33He's got to get past De La Rosa and and Micasalo
00:11:36And I think he'll be able to do it as Jenson Button there in the Williams
00:11:40Which is handling much better now in the race than it did yesterday in qualifying
00:11:45He's right behind the Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello
00:11:48Yes, I saw Verstappen had to come in at the end of the first lap
00:11:51He was up in fourth place amazingly after the chaos of the first lap
00:11:55He must have tagged somebody and come into the pits for a new nose or something
00:11:58He's now back out on the racetrack and there are three cars out of this race already Michael Schumacher, Jarno Trulli
00:12:05And Giancarlo Fisichella all out of the race. And Heinz-Harald Fredsen in the other Jordan is eighth
00:12:11Now, let me give you the top ten so that you can put things into context. Hold on Murray
00:12:15Let's just see this move from De La Rosa on Salo. Can he take third place?
00:12:19He's got a good line up the inside and yes, indeed
00:12:22He does De La Rosa up to third and Barrichello right up behind Johnny Herbert
00:12:27Look for the Scarlet Ferrari behind the green Jaguar. Here is it. He is coming towards us
00:12:32Hakkinen is leading, Coulthard is second, Salo in the salvo is third. De La Rosa
00:12:36Is now past Salo and Herbert is fifth with Barrichello crowding him. Seventh is Heinz-Harald Fredsen, eighth is Jenson Button
00:12:44Ninth, tenth incredibly, ninth incredibly is Marc Genet ahead of Alexander Wurz
00:12:49And look at the two McLarens. They're already clearing off from Pedro De La Rosa, the Spaniard
00:12:56Who is proving that the Arrows is a rejuvenated car as a very unhappy
00:13:01Michael Schumacher stalks back to the Ferrari garage
00:13:06Well now this is going to be a McLaren demonstration at the front. No doubt about that. We're on lap
00:13:12four now out of 71
00:13:15Now the question is what is the situation going to be between
00:13:18Mika Hakkinen who is leading the race and wants to make it three world championships in succession
00:13:24And David Coulthard has won three races this year
00:13:27And was starting to look as though he was getting right on top of Mika Hakkinen
00:13:32We know there's no team orders between the two of them
00:13:35We also know that the criminal, the most criminal thing you can do in Formula One is to take off your teammate
00:13:42Which David Coulthard did here at this circuit at the corner. They're approaching now turn two last year
00:13:49So Mika Hakkinen leads. David Coulthard is the fastest man on the track
00:13:53He's just put up the fastest lap we've had so far and he's closing up on Mika Hakkinen. What's your guess?
00:14:00Well, clearly they're going to be on similar fuel loads if McLaren have decided the most
00:14:05The quickest way to run this race is at a certain strategy then
00:14:10Surely both drivers will be on something similar
00:14:12I wonder what they may have done to cover any potential Ferrari move and this is Barrichello taking Herbert
00:14:19For what is what will now be fifth place so Barrichello coming through the field
00:14:24I believe that Ferrari could be slightly lighter than the two McLarens, but he's got a major job to do now
00:14:30He's going to be so far out of touch for the time. He can get anywhere near some clear air
00:14:35And here he is now coming up behind Salo. Something is smoking. Yeah, it's for instance Jordan and off he goes
00:14:41I've made something's happened to the engine. I saw smoke coming out of the back of the Jordan before
00:14:46That's the Mugen Honda engine spinning the wheels. He's in the gravel. He's beached it. The under tray is down in the gravel
00:14:53He's not going to get out of that
00:14:54That is another retirement from the Austrian Grand Prix and it is the fourth in six laps
00:15:00I suspect he spun off in his own oil or fluid of some sort because something was smoking
00:15:05And look he's turned in completely normal. Yes. There's a trail of smoke and bang it goes on your own rear tires
00:15:11And Frentzen just buried the throttle pedal to try and drive out of the gravel but ended up just digging himself the beginnings of a sandcastle
00:15:19And uh, look he's reacted extremely early and nothing he could do about it. That is not Heinz-Harald's fault
00:15:25No, he had a terrific season last year because he won in France and he won in Italy
00:15:29He's having a pretty awful season this year because he's down in ninth position with only five points
00:15:34That is Eddie Jordan and I wonder what could be on the track there. Fortunately for most of the drivers
00:15:39They're going to get some waved yellows when they come along there
00:15:42I suspect the track could be quite slippery in there
00:15:45If there was enough fluid down for Frentzen to spin off on it himself
00:15:49Then the track's going to be quite slippery, but they appear to be getting through no problem
00:15:53Well, look at the way de la Rosa is going. All right. He's four seconds behind the flying McLarens
00:15:59But de la Rosa now is nearly three seconds ahead of Mika Sala's Sauber and Sala remember drove a Ferrari here last year
00:16:07And it's a Ferrari that's catching him Rubens Barrichello in fifth position. There he goes. There is Johnny Herbert behind Johnny Herbert
00:16:14Is Jenson Button so the Englishman has had an absolutely fantastic drive?
00:16:19I would imagine the Ferrari engine Sauber of Sala will be
00:16:24Expected to move quite quickly out of Barrichello's way and release him up into that fourth place
00:16:29We'll have to watch that one. De la Rosa surely is not running the same fuel load as uh,
00:16:34As the two McLarens and others. Now, do you know who the fastest man on the track is at the moment?
00:16:40It is Hollands Jos Verstappen in the second arrows on lap six
00:16:46He's just put up the fastest lap one minute fourteen point three
00:16:50Compared with last year one minute twelve point one by Mika Hakkinen, but of course, it's early days
00:16:56They're on heavy fuel loads. You're looking now at Mika Sala's Sauber and what an improvement there is in that car
00:17:02We're used to Sauber normally doing well in the first half of the season and then
00:17:07Starting to go a lot slower in the second half because they haven't developed the car enough. Not this year
00:17:13Sala was in terrific form yesterday
00:17:16He was dropping sixth place in qualifying at one point
00:17:19But now Rubens Barrichello is gaining gaining gaining but we leave him to look at Pedro de la Rosa
00:17:26Third position that was Verstappen. Sorry. Yeah, that was Verstappen
00:17:30He was quick at the back end of the field and and here we go Sala
00:17:34Trying to defend easily actually because Barrichello is not that close but Barrichello will have to come up the inside here
00:17:40And Sala will have to yield as he does and as I expected
00:17:44It did not make a big deal out of letting the Ferrari pass. Well
00:17:49Barrichello is now 10 seconds behind the McLarens
00:17:53McLarens are lapping in about one minute fourteen one minute fourteen point two
00:17:58And Barrichello has been lapping nearly one and a half seconds slower than them at the present moment
00:18:04So he's got to put on a terrific charge to close the gap
00:18:07Never mind get past them as we look at him again on this replay taking third position from
00:18:13Mika Salo from Finland
00:18:16Yes, and i'm pretty sure that's a move that Barrichello made in the knowledge that he wasn't going to get turned in on
00:18:22So I guess it's not that surprising but Barrichello easily threw into fourth place
00:18:26Now he sets about the challenge of catching de la Rosa who's currently holding third and the two McLarens
00:18:32There's absolutely nothing between them up at the front
00:18:35So Barrichello goes with that third. He's lost another two seconds on the two McLarens
00:18:40He's 12 seconds behind them. But here is Herbert behind Herbert
00:18:45Seventh position is back ahead of I can I can hardly believe my eyes
00:18:50Mark, Janay the Spaniard in the very very tidy
00:18:54Minardi, which has got a powerful engine into the pits comes at Ralph Schumacher
00:18:59With a broken nose for the looks of it hasn't he a broken front wing so Ralph's tripped over somebody or that may be
00:19:06Damaged from the first corner that with the aerodynamic load has taken a little bit of time to uh to actually
00:19:13Materialize, but uh, let's take a quick break
00:19:28So
00:19:58So
00:20:28So
00:20:59So
00:21:01So
00:21:03So
00:21:05So
00:21:27Lap 11 out of 71 Ralph Schumacher has joined the retires
00:21:32He came in to have the nose cone replaced after being involved in that collision on the first lap
00:21:38So he's another retirement to make five in all
00:21:42but noticeably and significantly
00:21:45We think and I emphasize the word think that we saw a puff of smoke coming from the lead McLaren's engine
00:21:52That's Micka Micka Hackington's car. It hasn't stopped him from just making the fastest lap of the race
00:21:57He's still one and a half seconds ahead of their David Coulthard
00:22:01Who is some eight seconds now ahead of Pedro de la Rosa there? He is alone on the circuit, but
00:22:09Rubens Barrichello is eating up the gap to the arrows
00:22:12Yes, but Barrichello now he has got in clear air is still one and a half seconds a lap slower
00:22:17Than the McLaren's at the front that absolutely amazes me
00:22:21It's so much slower with no traffic in front of him whatsoever as you watch Jean Alesi trying to challenge
00:22:28Alexander Wurtz for ninth place
00:22:30Let's try a wild an absolutely wild one on you because it amazes me that there's so much quicker
00:22:35Might they be on a two-stop strategy and Barrichello only on a one-stop strategy in which case he'd have a heavier field load
00:22:42Seems unlikely, but it's possible. I'd be surprised but we'll have to wait to find out won't we but Barrichello certainly doesn't appear to have
00:22:49Great pace, but even Murray the difference between one and two stops is not one and a half seconds a lap as Alesi
00:22:56Ducks up the inside and can't hold the back end of the car and Wurtz immediately takes back his ninth position
00:23:01Well, we're on lap 12 now out of 71
00:23:04Eddie Irvine won last year in the Ferrari as a result of a brilliant
00:23:10Stint he stayed out until lap 44 in the 71 lap race and he came out of the pits still in the lead
00:23:17After his stop, so now we're on lap 12 Hakanen leading Kulthar and the gap is increasing slightly
00:23:24Hakanen is putting in a series of absolutely blistering laps
00:23:28Anybody that thought that Mika Hakanen had lost his touch was over the hill and lost motivation was very clearly very wrong
00:23:37Hakanen was blistering around this track last year
00:23:39He didn't win it of course because he had that tag with Kulthar on the first lap
00:23:42But watching him come back through the field he was sensational and certainly there's two or three corners around this racetrack
00:23:47Where nobody can touch Mika Hakanen
00:23:50So he's certainly got the pace that he needs. We're back on board with Barrichello coming up towards
00:23:57Turn three as he's coming down from 180 down to just 70 miles an hour
00:24:02And still he's 1.5 seconds per lap slower than Mika Hakanen and he even more interesting
00:24:09I think Martin is it he's only a few hundredths of a second quicker than the car. We're looking at now
00:24:15Pedro de la Rosa the Spaniard in the arrows on the last lap. It was 1 minute 14.69
00:24:22And 1 minute 14.61
00:24:24So there's only eight to one hundredths of a second improvement of Barrichello on de la Rosa
00:24:30And it's going to take him a long time to catch the arrows at this rate
00:24:33But then there again de la Rosa might be on a two-stop strategy. Well Schumacher there staying in the car clearly
00:24:39He's had a knock in that first corner. We saw the front wing broken when we came back from the break
00:24:44And now surely he's got some kind of suspension failure. I noticed on the computer the car number 23
00:24:51That Zonta is under investigation by the stewards
00:24:54And that will surely be for running into the back of Michael Schumacher in the first corner James
00:24:59What can you tell us? Yeah, I think Zonta may be facing a stop and go penalty in the not too distant future
00:25:03But i'm down at McLaren where there really is no sign of any
00:25:06Anxiety about the engine of Mika Hakanen looking down to Ferrari
00:25:09It looks to me as though Rubens was on a quite a heavy fuel load
00:25:12And I think Ferrari's plan today was to damage the invitation really for Michael Schumacher
00:25:16Try and get him up to p3 and then move on from this weekend and forget all about it
00:25:19But instead Michael has an awful lot potentially of damage McLaren
00:25:23I think are going to run quite long here as far as lap 40 possibly lap 44 and Rubens will probably do the same thing
00:25:29De la Rosa quick word on him. Remember Canada where he did two stops
00:25:32He looked very good in the early part of the race, but then he faded later on. I think you'll see the same thing today
00:25:37yes, and uh
00:25:39interestingly
00:25:40You could well be right on Barrichello James. I'll come back to you on something else in a moment
00:25:44So Mika Hakanen now increasing the pace all the time is inching away from David Coulthard
00:25:50The gap is 2.3 seconds
00:25:53Behind Barrichello who's in fourth place Mika Salo is fifth
00:25:57Johnny Herbert is still sixth in the Jaguar and they've only scored world championship points in one race
00:26:04This year and that was Eddie Irvine Button is still in seventh position just outside the points
00:26:10He scored twice this year eighth is Mark Junaid ninth is Alexander Voortz ahead of John Lacey
00:26:16we've seen the battle they're having then it's Heidfeld, Villeneuve and
00:26:21Zonta and uh, they're coming towards us up the track towards turn two now
00:26:26There is Heidfeld turning in behind him is Villeneuve and coasting is Joss Verstappen
00:26:33Joss Verstappen coming into the pits
00:26:35From 17th position with his visor up now the car language of the body languages says this is the end of his race
00:26:43Yes, he turns across the pit lane. Here is the reason he turns out of the top corner
00:26:49Sorry, the bottom corner runs very very wide indeed over the grass onto the gravel
00:26:55I think looking at how that accident developed or incident developed. He'd already got a problem before he turned into that corner
00:27:01So Verstappen there I would imagine with some kind of front suspension
00:27:05failure or problem something I was going to say earlier on before I got distracted is that I'd like
00:27:10At some point when we see a replay of the of the start Barrichello got away so much better than Michael
00:27:16and uh
00:27:17And then seemed to have to get out of it and let Michael through up into the first corner
00:27:21Michael's miles behind him off the line and uh, I think that could confirm what James is saying about Barrichello
00:27:27Actually, yes being on the fuller fuel load and trying to release Michael it didn't pay off because Zonta arrived much too hot
00:27:33Well, uh, uh, Alex Furhutz waves a furious fist at Jordan Alessi
00:27:39Who's just moved up into ninth position there?
00:27:42He is diving through on the inside of the Benetton
00:27:46Who runs wide again and lets Alessi get away. Alessi is an absolutely storming driver
00:27:53He's driven in more Grand Prix than anybody else who is currently racing. I think this is it's
00:27:59177th Grand Prix and he's lost none of his brio. None of none of his enthusiasm
00:28:04None of his fire. That's Pat Simmons the technical chief of Benetton on the left with Gordon Message
00:28:11And the highest man that they've got in the field at the present moment is Alex Wurz who is in ninth position
00:28:17Because Fisichella of course has long gone out of the race
00:28:19So we've got two cars have been notified. They're on a stop go penalty. It's Diniz and Zonta
00:28:25So Zonta we're sure it's because he ran into Michael Schumacher here. It comes up on the screen Diniz
00:28:30I don't know. Maybe he had a jump start or something like that
00:28:35So well, but look at this Murray Mika Hakkin is now down in the mid one minute 12
00:28:40And Barrichello still buried in the one minute 14s. Yeah fastest lap last year was Mika Hakkin at one minute 12.1
00:28:48So he's half a second off that at the present moment at this 17th lap out of 71
00:28:55So it's McLaren's all clear and a long way 17 seconds now ahead of the third place
00:29:01De la Rosa at the front of the field, but there is a battle going on behind and in the pits again
00:29:07Out of the pits. I'm, sorry
00:29:09Rejoining the race goes Ralph Schumacher
00:29:12now he uh, he's
00:29:14Several laps down now and Villeneuve the man who is holding up all sorts of movements in Formula One for next year
00:29:22Whilst he makes his mind up about whether he's going to drive for BAR
00:29:25Whether he's going to drive for Benetton or what he's going to do continues to unsuccessfully chase Nick Heidfeld
00:29:33the Formula 3000 champion of
00:29:361999 Heidfeld in the Prost and
00:29:39Alain Prost is very much here under a terrific amount of pressure as a result of these rumors that he sold his team
00:29:46And Heidfeld is in 11th position at the moment. That's Danitz in for his stop go
00:29:51So he has to go to his own box and Zonthorin is ahead of him too
00:29:54Look, they have to go to their own area and their own mechanics have to release them after 10 seconds of being completely stationary
00:30:03Plus the time they lose getting in and out of the pits
00:30:05So 25 to 30 seconds is an absolute minimum is the cost of this
00:30:10Strangely named 10 seconds. I feel quite sorry for Zonta actually because he drove his heart out to get the sixth position on the grid
00:30:18Which is the highest his ever been. His position at the BAR team is debatable next year
00:30:25and he undoubtedly got overexcited at the start and
00:30:29Probably caused Michael Schumacher to retire from the Austrian Grand Prix
00:30:34Now there's a lot of people been saying that of course the best thing that could possibly happen here today
00:30:39Is for the McLarens to finish first and second as they did in France because that would close the championship right up
00:30:47Because at the present moment the McLaren team is on a potential 16 world championship points in the constructors contest
00:30:54Which would put them ahead of Ferrari even if Rubens Barrichello finished in third position
00:31:01And he's in fourth place at the present moment
00:31:03Ironically for Hakkinen those two stop and go penalties of the other drivers played beautifully into his hand because they exited the pits
00:31:11Right between himself and Coulthard in second place. His lead is now 4.3 seconds
00:31:16And here's the restart and look at the white car just nerfing the Ferrari into a spin
00:31:20And they're already busy having an accident of their own behind anyway
00:31:23And at that point truly just runs into Schumacher probably look easy for us
00:31:28but I would imagine there was a cloud of tyre rubber when he arrived and just
00:31:31Nerfed into Schumacher as a secondary incident and Michael Schumacher saying nothing I could do boss
00:31:37I was I was sitting there and I got this colossal bang in the back and uh, who was it?
00:31:42It was that bloke Zonta. I'm gonna have a word with him after the race. It's cost me 10 world championship points
00:31:47It might have cost me the world championship. I'll only be two points ahead at the end of this race
00:31:52If me if uh, David Coulthard does well and at the present moment on lap 20 out of 71
00:31:58Mika Hakkinen is striding away now from David Coulthard
00:32:025.6 seconds is the gap. Della Rosa is 23 seconds behind the leader still there magnificently in the arrows
00:32:10Rubens Barrichello is only catching Della Rosa very slowly indeed in the Ferrari
00:32:15He's fourth Micasalo in the Sauber is fifth. Johnny Herbert is in sixth place
00:32:21So that's an unusual front and it's time now for us to leave the A1 ring. But of course, we'll be back
00:33:15So
00:33:45So
00:34:15So
00:34:40Mike uh, David Coulthard
00:34:42Surges inside Ricardo Zonta's B.A.R
00:34:46To lap the Brazilian and of course Mika Hakkinen has already done so
00:34:51Yes, as I said those two cars that finished their stop go penalties fared in front of Coulthard
00:34:56But behind Hakkinen and it's cost Coulthard over four seconds trying to get through them
00:35:02So Hakkinen now with a seven point two second lead as he comes over the line
00:35:07It's going to be even more this time around eight point five seconds as he negotiated the B.A.R of Zonta
00:35:14So Hakkinen now really getting off into the distance
00:35:17Not because he was better through the traffic because he didn't have to put up with that traffic Della Rosa now
00:35:2326 seconds behind Mika Hakkinen. Louise. What can you tell us? Well, I'll get it from the horse's mouth
00:35:28I'm here with Michael Schumacher
00:35:29Michael punted out of the race at the first corner through no fault of your own has to be a worst possible nightmare
00:35:35Oh, yeah, I mean
00:35:37that's
00:35:38one of the parts which which
00:35:40Makes you makes you disappointed. No doubt
00:35:44but
00:35:46You know, that's racing it sometimes can happen
00:35:49I don't think Ricardo is the person who does anything like that purposely just overestimated his abilities and the corners P
00:35:57Has happened to me in the past. I mean I
00:36:00I've had I've done that mistake and I guess he will admit he did one
00:36:04So I will have a quiet word with him next time and we'll see. Do you feel that the race should have been red flagged?
00:36:12I mean from my position. Yes, definitely
00:36:17Realistically speaking there was no reason for it
00:36:20I mean the marshals did a very good job, unfortunately to clear the circuit
00:36:25so
00:36:26Obviously you have the safety car and it's the same for everyone. They use the safety car under normal circumstance, uh like this
00:36:33It's the same for everyone. It hurts. Obviously if you feel
00:36:38The race could be stopped and you could jump in the other car and you have a second go but uh, well
00:36:42That's the way it goes bad luck. Thanks for talking to us, you know about half of britain can't stand michael schumacher
00:36:50the other half either loves him or
00:36:53Is uh ambivalent about him. I must say I think he's an absolutely super bloke and uh, I marred him there for his
00:37:01Plagmatic attitude his cheerful attitude to the fact that he's now in a situation
00:37:08Potentially where he could only just be leading the world championship
00:37:12But I suppose when you've done in as many grand prix as he has and this was his 136th
00:37:18136th which he started and you've been on the podium for well over half of those races
00:37:24You just learned to take it that way. Yes. He was I have to say remarkably calm about it though
00:37:30And uh, I think it was a good pr friend there from my corner
00:37:33I think he was very correct in what he was saying
00:37:36And I do remember him running to a lot of people on the first lap in the past, but it must be incredibly frustrating for him
00:37:43Incredibly sportsmanlike all at the same time
00:37:46But you know get back to the pits jump scream shout thump somebody all you like
00:37:50It won't put your race car back on the track. Absolutely now
00:37:53Remember what james was saying about de la rosa when I was hypothesizing that he's on a two-stop strategy
00:38:00De la rosa has actually increased his lead over rubens barrichella who as I say it takes some of it back
00:38:07You're looking at the only ferrari in the race at the present moment with brazil's rubens barrichello
00:38:13Who is in fourth place in the world championship at the present moment, but has yet to win a race either for jordan or for?
00:38:21Stewart or for ferrari, which is his third team and he is inching up on de la rosa
00:38:27But if de la rosa is on a two-stop strategy and barrichella is on a one-stop strategy. He will go up to third place pretty soon
00:38:35Yes, if michael look when michael looks at the computer screen
00:38:38Which i'd imagine be the first thing he did when he got back to the pits
00:38:41He'd be pleased to see that hackanan
00:38:43Is stopping coulthard at the moment getting maximum points could that of course six points nearer to michael in the championship?
00:38:50But he'll be very saddened to see that barrichello is only literally inching up on de la rosa in third place
00:38:56Some 36 seconds behind the leader now his fourth placeman barrichello
00:39:00Michael will be amazed to see how slow he is and the fact that barrichello cannot get up there and spoil mclaren's day
00:39:09It's now all down to making sure there's no driver errors and no mechanical failures i've seen out of the window a pit board
00:39:15that says
00:39:16revs
00:39:17And shift and they're telling the two mclaren drivers shift a little bit earlier use a few less revs
00:39:24and uh, and hopefully
00:39:26Just even if you just knock three four hundred revs off the top end
00:39:30It saves the engine enormously the stresses
00:39:32Are just increased dramatically as they get over 17 000 rpm for for example, james. What can you tell us?
00:39:38Well, it's interesting. I've just been looking at those pit boards being prepared. I see shifts and revs
00:39:43I don't wonder if in the minds of hacking and coulthard that also means don't race each other guys. What do you think martin?
00:39:49well, I think that uh
00:39:51Coulthard will be trying as hard as he can to race
00:39:53But hacken and certainly punished him while coulthard was making his way through that traffic
00:39:57Hacken and put on despite getting a board saying slow down a bit some
00:40:01Astonishing laps and you're seeing one for yourself now a 111.8. That is amazingly fast and some
00:40:071.2 seconds faster than coulthard. This is a virtuoso performance
00:40:11We're seeing here from mika hacken and and he's scampering down there
00:40:14He doesn't want coulthard to have to make a decision whether to race him or not
00:40:18He wants to get far enough into the distance
00:40:20Yeah, and he's three tenths of a second faster than his own fastest lap last year. Zonta's having a pretty lurid race
00:40:27You just saw him
00:40:28Nerfing, uh, matsukane
00:40:31Who is battling with him on the track zonta is down in 15th position
00:40:36There are 16 cars left out of the 22 that started
00:40:41Fisichella out at the beginning with trulli and michael schumacher heights harold frentzen presumably as a result of his engine locking
00:40:48Up, which spun him off the circuit yosfa stappan
00:40:51We've seen come into the pits and into the garage ralph schumacher has been into the pits for a long time
00:40:57He's eight laps behind now. The leaders are on lap 27 out of 71
00:41:03Here is mika hacken and you can see the gap as behind him
00:41:07The there is luciano berti who is now in 12th position
00:41:14He's been lapped of course
00:41:15But he's running well in the jaguar and johnny herbert his teammate the team leader today
00:41:21With eddie irvine still in as far as I know in hospital
00:41:24And if you are ready and if you are watching get well soon and johnny herbert is still in sixth position
00:41:31Here is the battle between matsukane in the yellow
00:41:35Minardi and ralph schumacher closing up on him in the williams bmw
00:41:40The only problem schumacher's got is he's seven laps down murray because if you remember he came into the pits for a new wing
00:41:45And then he came in for what i'd imagine being new wishbone on the left front
00:41:49So of suspension so ralph was really out there having a test day really trying the car
00:41:54And uh checking out for if they can stress anything and find some reliability issues because he certainly isn't going to score any points today
00:42:02Well, the question in my mind now is when is delarosa going to come in if he is on a two-stop strategy?
00:42:10He's in third position at the moment. He's on lap 27
00:42:14He's on lap 28 now
00:42:16And he's well past the hypothetical
00:42:19First stop, which would be round about lap 23
00:42:23If he's on a two-stop strategy, he will have to come in pretty soon
00:42:27Barrichello is now rapidly closing the gap to the arrows in front of him barrichello in the ferrari in third position
00:42:34There is mika hacken and slicing his way through the field
00:42:38He's coming up towards us now and in just in front of him on the track is jack
00:42:44Villeneuve in 11th position on the bar
00:42:47And that is mika hacken's next target because he's already lapped. That's a can a zonta
00:42:53Pedro deniz a lacey luciano berti. He's coming up to there is
00:42:58Jack villeneuve the world champion of 1997
00:43:0211th position bar
00:43:04Thundering up behind him in the mclaren to lap him is mika hacken
00:43:09James is down in mclaren. Yes where mika hacken isn't taking the message. He's about to get a pit board
00:43:13Now it says easy
00:43:15We've seen it once or twice in the past and mika hacken is so desperate to prove himself
00:43:19He was so enormously relieved when he stuck it on pole yesterday. He said to me it's so good to smile again
00:43:24It's been such a tough time for me and he's out there giving a demonstration of how fast he is
00:43:28But the mclaren team don't like it. They want to back off martin. It doesn't surprise me at all
00:43:33That'll be the second time of asking clearly
00:43:35They asked both their drivers cooltard slowed down hacken and now pulling out a 14 second lead 14.4 now
00:43:42and I noticed really cooltard put the started to put the
00:43:45Hammer down again. He's having to get right back into the 12s. Otherwise
00:43:50Hacken is just disappearing into the distance and now hacken and somewhere amongst the back markers
00:43:54It's a 72 second lap and hacken and is now 42 seconds ahead already of barrichello in fourth place
00:44:01So he's going to lap that ferrari this afternoon 14 seconds ahead of david coolfield as he comes up through
00:44:08The tail enders you've just seen him go past field nerve after the blue flags were waved at the canadian
00:44:14Now he's closing up on nick heidfeldt's blue prost which is in the 10th position
00:44:21Just look at the way that mika hacken and he's going he's just diving past left right and center
00:44:26The next target is alexander vortz in front of him in the benetton with the super tech engine
00:44:32And mika hacken and comes through round turn eight the last turn on this corner crosses the line
00:44:39And he's up behind there is words in the benetton the only one left in the race
00:44:44And it's he's coming up to turn two now
00:44:47It's climbing all the way up here and he's doing about 180 miles an hour before he backs off to about 45 50 miles
00:44:55An hour from the apex
00:44:56There's forts. There is hacken. It's been such a lot of garbage written about hacken in this week
00:45:01About he's got a baby on the way. Therefore. He's lost it
00:45:04That's his you know, as if he's his mother father brother sister's wife and other people around him didn't care
00:45:10It didn't matter at all. It's only the fact there's a baby on the way complete load of rubbish
00:45:14You know the risks you drive accordingly. You've also got yourself to think about there's no way
00:45:19That having a baby makes you just suddenly go off the boil in terms of being a grand prix driver
00:45:26But everybody needs to seem seems to need to analyze these drivers
00:45:29They ask them questions and they're given answers and if they're not the answers they want to hear from the drivers
00:45:34They then start dissecting that driver's personality
00:45:38Complete load of rubbish. Well, he's short shifting now if he's obeyed instructions and there's some doubt about that
00:45:44But he is lapping about six tenths of a second slower than his own fastest lap so far in this race
00:45:50Which was done on lap 27 and that was one minute 11.8. He's lapping in about one minute 12.6 now
00:45:57He's on lap 32 of 71. So getting on towards half distance
00:46:04Up to turn two they come jaguar
00:46:08Williams the jaguar is johnny herbert. The williams is jenson button and there is mika hacken
00:46:15And now he has passed woods. I'm, just checking on whether he's no jenay is the next one
00:46:20I've been talking a little about this minardi because mark jenay is in a magnificent eighth position the spaniard
00:46:28There's two spaniards in formula one now pedro de la rosa is the other one
00:46:32And that car that yellow minardi if it had a more
00:46:37A lighter engine the ford engine that it's got is pretty powerful
00:46:41It's not far off most of the others
00:46:43But it's very heavy and gustav brunner the austrian engineer who has worked for so many formula one people
00:46:50Has produced a great motor car mark jenay's making the most of it. He's hanging on to jenson button there
00:46:55It was rubens barrichello
00:46:58and
00:46:59That was that dust coming back from behind the arrows. I fear it's a little bit more than dust certainly
00:47:05Adela rose has gone a lot further into this race than I thought he would in terms of fuel
00:47:08So maybe eating my words on that one, but I yes, it's beginning to breathe rather heavily, isn't it?
00:47:14That is not going to make the end of the race. No, it's a super. Oh, no, my goodness. It is
00:47:19Whoa, that's it. Bang. Bang. Bang out goes de la rosa. That's a replay
00:47:25So rubens barrichello will be moving up into third position with the disappearance of the arrows after a superb drive
00:47:33I don't think it's still running. Yeah, it's not disappeared. You said that was a replay of it smoking earlier on now
00:47:38He's coming in for let me look out of the window. It's a routine stop. They're expecting him. So, uh,
00:47:44He may have to he's certainly not going to be able to get to the end of the race without stopping again
00:47:50I would have thought from here
00:47:51But uh de la rosa in but surely that engine is not going to see the chequered flag six laps into the window
00:47:57It looks to me as though he's going to turn in
00:48:00Very leisurely very leisurely stop no tires you see
00:48:04Looking at the back of the car. No, this is the end of de la rosa's effective race whether he rejoins or not
00:48:11So barrichello goes up into fourth position
00:48:13Mikasa third position mikasala goes up into fourth johnny herbert is fifth
00:48:18Jenson button for the third time in his fourth time in his career is back in the is in the points
00:48:24He's finished in the points twice
00:48:27And he's in the points again
00:48:29And mark janae is in seventh place and now mika hackinton has lapped everybody up to seventh position
00:48:36Oh, and as I say it he passed his jenson button
00:48:39well
00:48:40you're right martin if if uh
00:48:43Hackin and goes on the way he's going now
00:48:45He's going to lap everybody before the end of this race except his teammate david. Cooper
00:48:49Yeah, it's a brilliant performance from hackett and he's certainly not backing off at all. It's quite a good scrap going on here
00:48:55You've got uh, herbert salo rather nine tenths behind him is herbert and now just a little bit more as jenson button
00:49:01he was 1.2, but he had to yield to the
00:49:05McLaren of hackett and that was lapping him but a good little scrap there for what will now become fourth fifth and sixth
00:49:12Salo herbert and button. Well, the highest that a jaguar has finished in a in a grand prix was eddie
00:49:19Irvine's fourth place at monaco
00:49:22Johnny herbert is in fifth position and
00:49:25Louise has got information about de la rosa of arrows. Yeah, that's right
00:49:29Murray a lot of sad faces down here at arrows as you can imagine, uh de la rosa was on a one-stop strategy
00:49:35So he was keeping up with those cars on pure pace nothing to do with the fuel stop strategy
00:49:39But unfortunately his gearbox has let him down exactly the same reason as his teammate for stappan went out
00:49:44As we watch mika hackinton closing up on johnny herbert and surging past the jaguar
00:49:51Which is in fifth position still
00:49:54So there's just salo barrichello and couvard ahead of mika hackinton for him to lap
00:50:02and
00:50:03Salo is lapping in about one minute fourteen point five
00:50:07Mika hackinton is lapping one and a half seconds faster than the salvo
00:50:12Herbert was smart there. Clearly. He's got to let the mclaren pass
00:50:15The flags were already waving at him blue flags
00:50:18But he chose to do it in a place where they both lost the minimum amount of time, especially himself
00:50:24So johnny the old hand able to release hackinon without giving away too much in his
00:50:30Pursuit of mika salo but a little as you can see but now salo has got the same problem
00:50:35But he can let happen and get through as they break up into turn one
00:50:39Salo will then just blend out the throttle a little bit down this straight and let hackinnon
00:50:43Have the inside line that way shut salo stays on the racing line and gets good drive out of the corner because his tires are clean
00:50:50and that
00:50:51Keeps his gap back to herbert
00:50:53Yeah
00:50:53He needed to do that to prevent johnny herbert closing up on him and I was saying i'm keeping my fingers crossed for jaguar
00:50:59Because they've had so many hard times of this season
00:51:03As we see a replay of hackinnon going past the ferrari engine
00:51:07So it's a petronas engine officially, but it's a ferrari engine in fact of mika salo
00:51:14And you're watching a really brilliant race brilliant drive by mika hackinnon who certainly lost none of his form
00:51:20But I was talking about jaguar
00:51:22They've had so much hard luck with three retirements for eddie irvine with four retirements
00:51:28From the first nine races for johnny herbert only one points finish and people don't realize they say
00:51:36It was the stewart team last year and johnny herbert won for stewart at the european grand prix at the nerberg ring
00:51:43Why can't jaguar take it on from there?
00:51:45Well, it's virtually a completely new team in terms of personnel at the top and the infrastructure is largely changed as well
00:51:54And it's a very very difficult thing as we ride with rubens barrichello
00:51:58Now he is closing a little but only in about two tenths of a second a lap on david coulthard who is second
00:52:04And he is 32 seconds behind coulthard and he is 47 seconds behind hackinnon
00:52:10Yes, that's the first time in 35 laps that barrichello has been faster than either of the two
00:52:16McLaren's as it happens. It was faster than both of them. But remember
00:52:20They are going through the traffic. They're going through the back markers
00:52:23So hackinnon leads by 15.4 seconds from coulthard barrichello
00:52:2946.9 seconds behind hackinnon salo herbert and button in close formation to round out the top six. We'll be back very shortly
00:52:49So
00:53:19So
00:53:49So
00:54:06Um
00:54:20So
00:54:22So
00:54:44So
00:54:46Has been in for his fuel stop and has lost the lead to david coulthard
00:54:54Here is a replay
00:54:57Of mika hackinnon coming into the pit lane
00:55:01And at the time he came in he was about 18 seconds ahead of david coulthard. He has looked a pretty solid stop
00:55:08I thought they were struggling a bit with the
00:55:10vent hose on his left hand side of the car, but
00:55:14A reasonable stop considering it's a one stopper. Nothing too special, but hackinnon away
00:55:20Reasonably cleanly and there you see coulthard storming through to take the lead
00:55:25but of course he has yet to stop so coulthard now leads from hackinnon and
00:55:31Back now with the live pictures and they're showing p they're gonna put that to p2, of course
00:55:3732 laps to go and rubens barrichello is now on a charge
00:55:42He's doing the fastest lap of the race as I talk to you. He's still to come through and complete it
00:55:47He's done a lightning first section this lap. It's split up into three sectors for timing purposes
00:55:53The first sector ends just before turn two. He's gone through the second sector faster than he has been before
00:56:00but the gap between him and
00:56:03Mika hackinnon is still some 30 seconds coming down now
00:56:07It's 20 seconds as a result of hackinnon stop and barrichello has yet to stop himself
00:56:12Yes, barrichello has done his fastest lap of the race rather than the fastest of a 112.5
00:56:18But that's just normal sort of cruising around
00:56:21McLaren pace at the moment when they were trying to uh, just save the engine a little bit
00:56:25So now coulthard if he's got a few extra laps of fuel in his car probably explains why he wasn't
00:56:32Able to stay with hackinnon earlier on the traffic certainly hasn't fallen well and he hasn't taken it as well as
00:56:37Hackinnon, but hackinnon quite clearly in any event has more speed around this racetrack
00:56:42But coulthard leads the race and he's got low fuel
00:56:45He must be doing for fuel in the next few laps and he should be able to pull some of that deficit
00:56:50Back that he had on mika hackinnon. So the order on lap 41 with 30 laps to go in this 71 lap race
00:56:57David coulthard leading mika hackinnon now by 10 seconds rubens barrichello is 30 seconds behind coulthard
00:57:04But is yet to stop mika salo in the salvo is fourth
00:57:08Johnny, herbert still going strong in the jaguar fifth position two potential points jenson button in the williams who started down in
00:57:1718th position is now up into sixth position and in the points again
00:57:23Mark is seventh field nerve is eighth. He's gone ahead of heidfeldt who has come in for his pit stop down tonight
00:57:31But he's 10th and bertie in the second. Jaguar is still running in 11th place
00:57:36Yes, and if you didn't see the start of this grand prix
00:57:39There was an accident in the first corner that immediately eliminated michael schumacher. Yano truly and ginkalo fizzy keller
00:57:46Others had problems had to stop for wings and little bits of suspension
00:57:50notably ralph schumacher, so
00:57:53then allowed the tailenders really to
00:57:56Find their way through thread their way through the carnage in the middle of the pack
00:58:00And now look coulthard has to come in for his one and only stop of the afternoon
00:58:04And that's why you have herbert button and jenay for example in seventh place
00:58:10Right up the field because they were able to leapfrog and instead of a red flag scenario
00:58:14I think wisely they just chose to use the safety car because the marshals cleared the racetrack with great efficiency
00:58:21Yeah, they did a great job. Charlie whiting is the race director
00:58:24He's the man who has to make these ticklish decisions and he invariably gets it right an enormously experienced chap
00:58:31Ex chief mechanic of bramham and he's had various other jobs
00:58:35And now vicar hackanan is going round with david coulthard coming in now hick hackanan took
00:58:4211.8 seconds on his stop david coulthard is now 11.6 seconds ahead of hackanan in the race
00:58:50on lap 42
00:58:52Hackanan will retake the lead
00:58:55And it will run through that way to the end of the race unless
00:58:59And it's a big unless there is a problem for one of the two mcclarens and rubens barrichello is still first
00:59:06In comes cool farm
00:59:08Yes current leader then coulthard in for his stop of the afternoon james a very mellow atmosphere down here in this mcclaren garage
00:59:15They can't believe their luck frankly guys. They are absolutely cruising this race
00:59:19The only question mark is what did david coulthard believe he was about?
00:59:22Did he think he was gonna have a chance to race micka hackanan?
00:59:24But he's taking on about 68 kilos of fuel now should be stationed for about 10 seconds. Very smooth. Very nice. Very mcclaren
00:59:31Well, he gained two seconds on micka hackanan on the pit stop there, but it's not going to be enough he's coming out of the
00:59:39mandatory, uh 80 kilometers an hour
00:59:42One thing he has got to do is just mind this nasty little right hander onto the track. No problem at all
00:59:47That's caught a few drivers out over the years coming around there, but he's up and running but once again
00:59:54But sorry the two props
00:59:56There's the pressure of the occasion that's a lacey and heidfeld
01:00:00I don't know what's happened
01:00:01But it's the poor alan pross as if he hadn't got enough pressure on him in this vital race
01:00:07These two drivers appear to have come together and we saw in the last race
01:00:12Alan pross nearly throwing a fit in the in the pit lane as the gantry cam recording here it is
01:00:19That's the two lane whoever was coming in second there
01:00:23Was coming in too late that one has got to be firmly on a lacey shoulders
01:00:27And he's still trying to drive away with one wheel hanging off. But uh, now it's just it's just too late in there
01:00:33There's no way he could have expected heidfeld to yield in that situation
01:00:37And he was nowhere near close enough now here here is a possible a problem
01:00:43Rubens barrichello was coming up behind that lot. Look at those shards of carbon fiber being smashed off the car
01:00:50Look at them all over the circuit rubens barrichello will have had to run through that lot
01:00:55And it is not impossible that he could get a puncture as a result of it
01:00:59And that would be the cruelest possible blow for ferrari who've already had bitter luck here this
01:01:06and
01:01:07John lacey riding in on the back of the bike to part face the wrath of alan pross and
01:01:13With della rossa now is louise goodman. That's right
01:01:16Murray the the mclaren's running in first and second completed their pit stops
01:01:19But the man who was running third unfortunately stood here with me in the paddock pedro
01:01:23Can you can you get any consolation from the fact that the car was running so strongly before you went out?
01:01:30No, it's not enough
01:01:31Just not finishing another race. It's it's it's not good
01:01:34Especially I would have loved to finish on a good position for the team and especially because
01:01:40Everyone was thinking that we were on a two-stop strategy and we were on a one
01:01:44Like all all the others and it was a shame really because we had some transmission problems
01:01:51But anyway, this is motor racing and the unfortunate thing is that it happened when we were going so well and I was
01:01:57pushing very very hard because the first pit stop was very close and
01:02:02We knew some people were going to stop a little bit later
01:02:04But anyway, we'll have to forget it go to sleep and tomorrow will be another day. Thanks pedro
01:02:09Another very resigned and phlegmatic de la rosa. That's his eighth retirement from ten races
01:02:15But very interesting that they were on a one-stop strategy
01:02:18Works well for arrows. It certainly does. I certainly owe him an apology because the car had such speed
01:02:23And tom walkinshaw even told me this morning
01:02:25They were on one stop, but I still didn't believe him because they had such amazing speed in the warm-up this morning
01:02:31I thought like canada they were running the car a little bit like all credit to them
01:02:35They had some genuine speed around this circuit
01:02:38Now this is that was rubens barrichello as we look at his boss ross braun
01:02:42And we now look at the mclaren turning inside the minardi rubens
01:02:48Barrichello is only a couple of seconds now behind david coulthard as a result of coulthard stop
01:02:54And barrichello on lap 45 has yet to come in
01:02:59So it's a bit of a false picture barrichello is with the second place mclaren of david coulthard
01:03:06On the track, but effectively he's still way back in third position. Johnny herbert up to fourth place
01:03:12yes, because salo pitted from what was fourth place and
01:03:17Herbert and button have yet to stop and I think this also explains
01:03:20Why I mean barrichello going so far into the race
01:03:23He was very heavy off the line could also again explain why michael was able to have such a poor start yet
01:03:29Still be ahead of barrichello into that first corner
01:03:31You're on board now of the ferrari as you head up towards turn two a car in front of us
01:03:37Clearly the car and in fact, no, that's that's a cool
01:03:40Second place man coulthard who has already made his stop of course and barrichello surely has to pit anytime soon
01:03:47But if the ferrari can go this far on a tank of gas that bodes very well for those circuits like monza
01:03:53For example where they just need to run as far as they can but we see in the pit lane
01:03:59Ferrari mechanics are out jaguar mechanics are out. That must be for johnny
01:04:03Herbert 30 has already been in so uh, so now there we go
01:04:07Barrichello now must stop and jensen button is up into fourth place as johnny herbert comes into the pits
01:04:14Jensen button is up from 18th at the start to fourth in the race on lap 47 out of 71
01:04:21A brilliant drive david coulthard there second being crowded by rubens barrichello
01:04:27Who is about to come in for his one and only stop in this year's austrian grand prix?
01:04:32There are the ferrari mechanics james israel
01:04:38It's been very disappointing down here at the ferrari garage
01:04:40I think they've just been really struggling for grip the car has been sliding through the corners particularly the first two corners
01:04:46Really a bad day rubens has been doing mid 1 12 even in the run-up to his pit stop
01:04:51And well not a good day for ferrari i'm afraid so out of the pit lane
01:04:55Gently motors he has to he can't go any faster than this
01:04:59There is a speed limit for safety reasons gently motors rubens barrichello
01:05:04Who of course has now got a long long gap between himself and david coulthard who motored serenely on as the ferrari came into the
01:05:13Pit lane barrichello accelerates away. He's ferrari's sole hope in this race for four world
01:05:19Championship points compared with the 16 mclaren will get and look at button
01:05:23He's now done a 1 12.9 his fastest lap of the race by some margin. He's been told to sprint remember
01:05:30He was tucked up behind
01:05:32Herbert and salo there was a few tenths between the three of them and now his pit stop is imminent
01:05:38I can see the mechanics out in the pit lane ralph schumacher
01:05:42Surely it will not be pitting games. It must be for jensen button this time around he's been told to push he might
01:05:49Just might leapfrog salo and herbert if he can have a good in lap now unless i'm very much mistaken
01:05:56Jensen button has had a very encouraging discussion with frank williams here in austria
01:06:01It's not necessarily so encouraging that it'll mean he'll stay with williams next year instead of
01:06:08Montoya the colombian who is expected to take his place
01:06:12But frank williams and patrick head are delighted with the englishman. They've got him under long term contract
01:06:18There's no doubt that if button is not with williams next year
01:06:22He will be with somebody else and into the pit lane. He comes from fourth position
01:06:27Now he's got jack veal nerve at the present moment just a few seconds behind him feel nerve goes through
01:06:34And takes fourth position
01:06:37He'll have yet to stop but here comes button into his garage now just gently runs into the front jack
01:06:42That's exactly what he should be doing
01:06:44He's right on his mark so the mechanics can easily maneuver around the car moving the wheel
01:06:49The fuel stop was short of course not so far to run to the end of the race
01:06:53So a great stop for button that could just put him into a net fourth place
01:06:57Murray, yeah, but there goes wurtz through now wurtz was a lap adrift on hackinnon
01:07:03And I reckon that he's moved up into fifth position and jensen button will therefore be down to sixth if i'm right
01:07:09Yes, but wurtz hasn't stopped yet and nor and nor has
01:07:14Jack veal nerve, but let's do a current one to six until it shakes out after all the pit stops
01:07:19Mika hackinnon leads david coulthard by 17.1 seconds a further 26 seconds down the road
01:07:27Is rubens barrichello and then it's veal nerve jensen button who we've seen just pit stops
01:07:32So the computer hasn't caught up with that yet
01:07:34Then alexander wurtz salo and herbert who have stopped are down in seventh and eighth at the moment another lap from now
01:07:41We should be getting the true picture. Well, if hackinnon wins this race, he's still going to be eight world championship points behind
01:07:48Michael schumacher as they go to the 11th race in germany at hockenheim in two weeks time and we go to
01:07:56a break
01:08:18So
01:08:48So
01:09:18So
01:09:48So
01:10:07Out of 71 at austria's a1 ring 13 of the 22 cars that started are still circulating
01:10:16And mattsakane in the minardi is two laps behind race leader. Mika hackinnon as we ride with rubens
01:10:23Barrichello, who is 25 seconds behind second place. David coulthard. It is a mclaren whitewash
01:10:30They're on a potential 16 constructors championship points if they finish where they are now
01:10:36And there is no doubt that mclaren will take the lead in the constructors championship on race 10 out of 17
01:10:43Let me give you a 1 to 10. It's quite interesting at the front. It's fairly predictable
01:10:47It's hacking and now 18 seconds ahead of coulthard
01:10:50Who's a further 25 seconds ahead of the man you're on board with now?
01:10:54And then villeneuve had a great stop and managed somehow to get out in front of jenson button
01:11:01Who did leap frog salo and herbert with those two or three great laps he did before his pit stop
01:11:06So all change there villeneuve some kind of stunning in lap and a pit stop has got him up into fourth place
01:11:14Louise is with lacey. I am indeed jean both cross drivers out in the same accident. Tell us your side of the story
01:11:21They were in two different strategy
01:11:23Uh nick went out just in front of me with the full tank. I had
01:11:29the competitive car at this moment of the race, so
01:11:32Uh, I was uh, I try already wants to overtake him. We we touch each other already once
01:11:39When I pass through the the pit I make a sign with my hands and the lap after it
01:11:44We had a definitive accident. So I want to understand
01:11:48exactly now with uh
01:11:51Why or if they uh, they say something to him before?
01:11:54So you feel that the team should have told heidfeld to let you past of course, especially
01:11:59In this situation everything is clear. I mean they know the strategy very well and uh
01:12:05I overtook a car this uh at this
01:12:08place at the beginning of the race, so I knew it was possible to pass but you need also to uh
01:12:15I mean
01:12:16Okay
01:12:17We we had this accident. We we have to speak now together to understand what's happening
01:12:21Thanks, john. The problem is heidfeld had no idea that he was coming up
01:12:24So if there was any kind of instruction it hadn't made it to hide folks
01:12:27it's because he simply turned in as per normal without an inkling that his teammate was
01:12:32Slithering up the inside of him with a do or die effort
01:12:35But I can understand john's point if they're on different strategies
01:12:38Surely the team should have been uh playing a role in that one
01:12:41but i'd like to cut back to the villner button silo and herbert situation because they're
01:12:46Reasonably as you see, uh, there must be sala who's currently in sixth place and johnny herbert. They're chasing him in the jaguar
01:12:53Yeah, sala actually, uh lapping a bit quicker than jenson button at the moment
01:12:59But he's some four seconds behind him that it p6 is the sign to nick us
01:13:05Because salo there he is and behind him in seventh place the green jaguar of johnny herbert
01:13:11You remember he was in the points
01:13:13He's just out of them at the present moment
01:13:16But jenson button in the williams bmw is very much still in them
01:13:20Now villner who got past him in the pit stop is pulling away from the williams bmw
01:13:25I was going to say that jack villner would be an extraordinarily difficult bloke to get past particularly by somebody who's as
01:13:33Comparatively inexperienced as button is fine a season as he is having well villner is pulling away
01:13:40He's two seconds ahead of button now
01:13:42And he's the lapping of course slower than rubens barrichello
01:13:46Only three people hacken and kulfar and barrichello are on the same lap and mika hacken is lapping
01:13:54About four tenths of a second slower than rubens barrichello at the moment
01:14:00Some kind of stellar drive from villner of actually up there into fourth place remembering that melee in the first corner
01:14:05He really did lose out quite badly. I can't remember. I think he was 14 14th or 15th
01:14:11When they took the safety car away, so he's made his way through the field others have had problems
01:14:16And then a stellar pit stop villner in a very strong
01:14:20fourth place and uh
01:14:22Button we think has gone off
01:14:25Button has run has run off onto the grass as he goes wide again
01:14:29So buttons made a mistake in the last corner. Yeah, and he's got he's got salo right behind him
01:14:33there is button in fifth position salo in the
01:14:37Salva right behind him as they come up to turn two
01:14:41And that's where the schumacher brothers had a gigantic battle respectively
01:14:46In the ferrari and the jordan a couple of years ago and johnny herbert is right up behind salo
01:14:52So you're looking at the battle for fifth led by button with salo sandwiched between the two british drivers button and herbert
01:15:00Herbert in the jaguar
01:15:02And there's everything to gain for all of them button wants those two points
01:15:07So does salo and especially johnny herbert to give him the first points for jaguar and the team's second world championship points this year
01:15:15Yes, johnny herbert in the worst possible place to finish a grand prix and that's seventh
01:15:19But he hasn't finished yet and certainly button. We think he ran. We're hoping to see a replay
01:15:26He had a he ran very very wide in the last corner
01:15:31And the williams pit are ready with a new nose
01:15:33But I would imagine they'll only bring him in if he has a problem, which he doesn't appear to have at the moment
01:15:37I would imagine that's a precautionary situation
01:15:41With regarding to the williams pits with so relatively few laps to go. It would be crazy to bring him in and
01:15:48I can't see anything wrong with the nose. I think his team will be there ready just in case well disappointing for mccarran and their sponsors
01:15:54That we're not seeing more of hacken and coulthard
01:15:58It's a very wise decision by the television director because this is the excitement that mccarran's are way out on their own
01:16:07because
01:16:08There is the nose cone ready for jensen buttons car number 10
01:16:12There is jensen buttons car number 10
01:16:15Doesn't look to be suffering too much at the present moment from as far as I can see
01:16:19And that is jack wielder running wide and that's what caused buttons problem
01:16:24As he was tucked up right behind the bar as they came around turn eight, that's about a 135 mile an hour corner
01:16:32He just dodges the tar wall and keeps on the track
01:16:35I can see why they're ready. There were bits and pieces falling off the nose, but it was mostly the wing end plate
01:16:40I don't think it was anything critical or structural
01:16:42But you do have to be careful because if your front wing fails and tucks under your front tires
01:16:47You can have a pretty serious accident as salo once again
01:16:52Moves within half a second of jensen butter, but if that wing was going to fail
01:16:56I would big time it would have happened by now at the 180 miles an hour. Yes
01:17:00They're packing the kit away 180 miles an hour. The download on that is several hundred kilos
01:17:06So if it was going to break it would have happened soon. Yeah 10. This is only buttons 10th grand prix
01:17:11He only had one season of formula 3 behind
01:17:14He was third in the british championship last year and was second at macau
01:17:19He won the formula ford the champion championship the year before
01:17:23So this is only his third season of single seaters in only his 10th race in formula one
01:17:29And he's undoubtedly been the finder of the season of one of the five best for a very long time
01:17:35And that's endorsed by frank williams as mika hakkanen goes through to complete his 57th lap
01:17:4271 laps in the race. He's coming up behind jack veal nerve who is in fourth place
01:17:49And there is david kohlfeld. Sorry david kohlfeld in second position and
01:17:54Veal nerve, of course has long since been lapped by mika hakkanen now
01:17:57He's lapped by david kohlfeld the gap between the two mclarens is just under 16 seconds
01:18:04Yes, the mclarens have now dropped about one and a half seconds per lap to match the pace of barry keller
01:18:10They've got enough of a margin
01:18:11They don't have to push hacking and having built himself a margin over kohlfeld is now paying attention to his pit board
01:18:18Telling him to ease a little bit
01:18:20He's now dropped back into the 13s and 14s as has kohlfeld and that was barry keller's pace
01:18:26Anyway, yeah barry keller as we watch, uh, jack veal nerve in fourth position
01:18:31He's being lapped barry keller's having by far the best season he has ever had
01:18:37Unlike eddie irvine in the last four seasons or so
01:18:41He theoretically does not have to defer to michael schumacher
01:18:46And partly as a result of that he's had three second places. He's been
01:18:50Third a couple of times he's been in the points in two fourth places
01:18:54And he's only had a couple of retirements as barry keller in brazil and at the british grand prix
01:19:01And as a result of all that he's in fourth position in the world championship
01:19:06And he's going to of course include increase his points positioning here
01:19:10In austria with another four world championship points if he stays where he is
01:19:15And we're looking at matzah kane now in the minardi with the red wishbones. He is in 13th place
01:19:22and
01:19:23Alex are the votes is behind him in the banner time
01:19:27Well jenson button sort of regrouped and started coming back
01:19:30He lost six or seven seconds when he saw him bouncing across the gravel to veal nerve who'd snatched the fourth place on the pit stops
01:19:36But button taking one and a half seconds out of villeneuve on the previous lap. I think villeneuve was lapped on at that time
01:19:42I don't think he's got any specific problem
01:19:44Jensen now again establishing a one second lead as i'm talking about it back to salo and johnny herbert is a further
01:19:521.2 seconds behind a bit of debris lodged under the front wing end fences of that williams
01:19:59But button is picking up his pace and we're going to take a break
01:20:06So
01:20:36So
01:21:07So
01:21:26Fire there is a fire at the rear of the car
01:21:36So
01:22:07So
01:22:15We ride with rubens barrichello there and you see him in the background coming up behind max akane who is 13th
01:22:23And barrichello goes through on the inside
01:22:27now here is
01:22:29Coming up a replay of what's just happened to ricardo zonta
01:22:34The brazilian who was in 11th position in the bar honda
01:22:39Which has grenaded itself in the biggest possible way and out goes out goes ricardo zonta
01:22:45You see ralph schumacher going through and the williams there. He's rejoined the race
01:22:50And again, we see this multiple replay to the embarrassment of honda and we rejoin now
01:22:57Ralph schumacher who is now nine laps behind the leader mika hakkinen, but keeping running on what is in
01:23:06Effect an extended test for the williams bmw team and his teammate jenson button
01:23:12Is in fifth position and if he can stay there
01:23:15It will enable williams to leapfrog benetton
01:23:19In the constructors championship and regain the third position that they lost to benetton in the canadian grand prix
01:23:28No idea why matt sakani had to stop and go could be pit lane speeding. I don't think he's been anywhere near
01:23:33Uh on the track to be able to uh, and this is a replay of ralph schumacher who was running last
01:23:39And some nine laps behind the leader just out for an afternoon sport having managed to uh
01:23:46Having managed to spin off as well just for good measure and zonta look just about getting hit on the head
01:23:52And uh, thank you. Well
01:23:54There you go. It's catching isn't it? Yeah
01:23:58And um, I don't I mean
01:24:00That thing nearly hit him on the head didn't it with the shovel of the tractor?
01:24:04So mika hakkinen, here he is lap 63 71 lap race
01:24:09I say again
01:24:11People were starting to write hakkinen off the very determined phlegmatic experienced fin
01:24:17rubens barrichello is
01:24:20Cutting into at the rate of about four tenths of a second a lap david kubar's lead, which is now some 26
01:24:30Seconds over him, but uh, the veterans are in effect touring
01:24:36Still going very quickly indeed
01:24:38But not nearly as quickly as they could do if they had to and you will have observed that although there are dark
01:24:45Storm clouds overhead the majority of the sky is blue. The track is dry
01:24:50There have been no adverse weather problems for the drivers and us to contend with
01:24:55And the in the styrian hills here in austria
01:24:59Ralph schumacher's decided to finally call it a day and parked in the pit but up at the front end
01:25:05Coulthard keeps nibbling away at the lead of hakkinen and hakkinen responds but between them they're
01:25:11Pegging barrichello in third place quite nicely
01:25:14Villeneuve in fourth is a full 54 seconds behind third place man barrichello
01:25:20And really then button another seven seconds down salo and herbert still in reasonably close company
01:25:26Yeah buttons continuing to drive a cracking race in his efforts to catch fourth place. Jack field nerve
01:25:32Because he's pulling away from micasalo
01:25:35Who is in sixth position?
01:25:37And they're going to score points again for the salvo team having already done so twice this year
01:25:43In fact, he's actually done so three times this year, but he's he was disqualified
01:25:48From the australian grand prix because of a technical infringement no fault of his but jenson button is crowding on
01:25:56Extremely well, he's been lapped. There's only three people on this the 64th lap at the present moment and they are
01:26:03Hakkinen coulthard and barrichello
01:26:06And we've been looking at this
01:26:08bird in its nest
01:26:11For most of the weekend the producer seems to have a fixation with it as you can see
01:26:15It's in the corner of the ferrari garage
01:26:18amazed that he managed to get a pass out of bernie ecclestone to get in there, but
01:26:22I guess the ash
01:26:25The action on the track is not that exciting right now
01:26:28So we're seeing the bird tucked up in the corner of the garage
01:26:31But hakkinen probably thinks it's quite exciting from where he's sitting as he once again
01:26:36Buries his foot onto the brake pedal and turns that mclaren
01:26:40Which really they have been the class of the field this weekend, haven't they michael schumacher was shaking his head
01:26:45He just couldn't get that ferrari on the pace
01:26:48And just how near he was managing to make it for the near the pace for the race
01:26:52We never got a chance to find out with that silly incident in the first corner
01:26:55But hakkinen certainly has been in the class of his own
01:26:59Well, he may have a cozy little nest in the corner of the ferrari garage
01:27:03But if I know formula one as well as I think I do there's going to be quite a substantial
01:27:09Six lap 65 nicker hakkinen goes through to complete it
01:27:14and
01:27:15Into his 66th lap now. He's only got five laps to go
01:27:21In I was going to say what will have been a magnificent comeback that's silly really because
01:27:28Nicker hakkinen has certainly never been away nor has louise goodman. She's down there in the pit lane
01:27:33I am and indeed with that ralph schumacher ralph one way or another a pretty troublesome race for you today
01:27:39Yeah, I think it was a weekend to forget or a day to forget. I mean at the start
01:27:43It was a bit bad luck, you know, I was on the wrong side basically and got stuck
01:27:47And then we had to break this problem so I had to come in we had to change break break this I mean it was
01:27:53All big mess this weekend. You were eight laps down. Why why did you ever keep going in the first place?
01:27:58um
01:27:58It was just a decision taken by the team
01:28:00To to keep on driving and see what we can do and what the car is like. That was the only reason thanks ralph
01:28:06Well, not not a good day for the schumacher brothers
01:28:10by far the most successful
01:28:13Set of brothers that have ever taken part in formula one. There are seven sets of brothers the fitipaldis
01:28:20the
01:28:20stewarts the rodriguez brothers and can't remember all the others off the top of my head, but
01:28:26schumacher
01:28:27Michael and schumacher ralph have been quite outstanding as siblings in formula one
01:28:33And nicker hakkinen is quite outstanding here
01:28:36He's driven
01:28:37An absolutely inoculant race I can find absolutely no
01:28:42Destructive criticism of it at all. He started from pole position
01:28:46He's led all the way except for when he came in for his sole pit stop when his teammate
01:28:52David kulfar took over the lead which mika hakkinen regained when kulfar came in for his stop
01:28:59And it looks as though it is going to be the 16th
01:29:03career win for
01:29:06Mika hakkinen and it is going to it's going to be the second only something going to be the second win this year
01:29:13He won five times last year and that champ's been tottering about with that finish flag to my certain knowledge for four hours
01:29:20Because I was watching him do it this morning
01:29:22Now that you put the mary walker curse onto mika hakkinen kulfar is eating into his lead. It's now down to 11.1 seconds
01:29:29but without doubt
01:29:31Hakkinen is now enjoying the fruits of his afternoon earlier in the race when he eked out that advantage with speed and
01:29:39With good use of the traffic and barrichello making his way through the back markers
01:29:43I think matt zucconi who's just being lapped again actually got his stop and go penalty for not moving out of the way
01:29:49We see him on the computer having had blue flags waved at him
01:29:52So he was penalized soon got out of the way that time as kulfar does a new fastest lap of the race
01:29:58By a long long way it just shows you the kind of pace those mclaren's could have had this afternoon. He's done a one
01:30:0511.7
01:30:07So kultar deciding he's going to have a bit of fun at the end. He's going to fall off
01:30:11He'll be okay, and he's now just nine seconds behind
01:30:14Hakkinen and that is an average speed around this 2.7 mile circuit
01:30:20of well over
01:30:23134 miles an hour not just a maximum speed somewhere an average speed around the whole circuit
01:30:30And he's been doing speeds of up to 190 miles an hour at turn one and down to 45 miles an hour on turn two
01:30:38This circuit is in effect a series of straights with two or three very very tight and slow corners
01:30:46It's a killer on brakes. I'd imagine the mclaren pitch will be on the radio saying have a word with yourself
01:30:52David, what are you doing?
01:30:54So close to the end of the grand prix hacking and you know
01:30:57If you get there, you've got to pass him hacking and can surely pick his pace back up again
01:31:00But david's obviously come comfortable that he's uh can handle that kind of pace without falling off the road
01:31:06You've got 27 and a half seconds. Look back to barrichello
01:31:10And now he stopped it. He's at 114.4. I think that was david just demonstrating
01:31:15Hey, look, this is what I could do if I really had total freedom this afternoon. There's marco
01:31:22Who is micka's bald-headed like me finnish speaking physio?
01:31:28standing as ever with a
01:31:30Who is micka's wife while they watch their man's progress around this circuit this magnificent victorious progress
01:31:38James, you've got something to add. Yeah cool. I've got a board there from the team saying easy
01:31:42I just wonder whether in the early part of this race, you know
01:31:45When they were hanging the boards out to both drivers saying easy shift revs, etc
01:31:49And hackenham was ignoring that just going faster and faster
01:31:51I wonder if he's just trying to put pressure on ron dennis to say look we need team orders here tell dc
01:31:55He's not going to attack me. He's not going to race here
01:31:58I just wonder whether that's gone on over the radio during the race
01:32:00I just wonder whether that lack of dc's wasn't just a little bit of frustration. What do you think martin?
01:32:06David certainly short shifting plenty early enough at the moment as we move into these last few races
01:32:12I think they were reasonably clear what they had to do as a team
01:32:15As I said at the beginning they had a fairly major problem they needed to handle ferrari as team players
01:32:21Yeah, they're both up for the world championship
01:32:23and as I expected when david put the 11.7 in the team are mainly going to tell him just to
01:32:29Sort himself out and not bother at this stage of the afternoon. I don't think that
01:32:35There was anything between them to say. Hey, he's going to win the race and you're not or
01:32:40Or anything like that. I think it's just this afternoon hackenham has had more pace
01:32:45Yeah, what if there is pressure between them?
01:32:46There's going to be even more in germany because david kuhan is still if my mental equipment arithmetic is right going to be two
01:32:55World championship points ahead of mika hackenham still in second place in the world championship at the end of this race
01:33:03This is a great drive from villner if you're looking at now in fourth place. He's got a tricky decision. Does he go now to reno?
01:33:09Uh called benetton at the moment who they should be getting it together
01:33:13Renev done so well before in formula one both with turbo and with normally aspirated engines or does he stay with bar and trying to
01:33:22Take some of the advantages out of all the hard work he's put in there and uh, oh that was close, wasn't it?
01:33:27So I think villner really is in a tricky situation because the last three or four races that var has
01:33:33Appeared to almost be the best of the rest after ferrari. Yeah
01:33:37That's words trying to stay ahead of pedro deniz and retain his ninth position
01:33:42As mika hackenden is now on his 71st
01:33:47and last lap
01:33:49Victoriously driving on at the a1 ring in austria david kuhn
01:33:55Various hacken david kuhn is 12 seconds behind him. Rubens barrichello is catching both of them, but uh, it's academic
01:34:02He's in third place 30 seconds over behind hackenden
01:34:06Villner of that magnificent four button is going to be in the points
01:34:10because he
01:34:12Won't have to do the 71 laps on account of the fact he's been lapsed and mika salo
01:34:17He's going to score a point and johnny herbert is just going to miss it in seventh position
01:34:23So in the closing stages of the austrian grand prix up to turn seven
01:34:29Comes mika hackenden at about 130 miles an hour down to turn eight
01:34:34And in austria mika hackenden crosses the line to win his 16th grand prix
01:34:41And we look back now for david kuhn who is going to be about 12 seconds behind his teammate there
01:34:48He is a magnificent
01:34:51Magnificent austrian grand prix for mclaren 16 constructors world championship points
01:34:57They move ahead of ferrari and my goodness. It is mighty mighty close now
01:35:04in the drivers championship
01:35:06Because michael schumacher is on 56 points
01:35:11Mika hackenden is on 48 points and david kuhn is on 50 points
01:35:18so
01:35:19It's going to be a terrific climax to the season starting with the german grand prix at hockenheim in two weeks time
01:35:27But to say again the best possible situation and that's for the fourth time this year
01:35:32For mclaren because they achieved a first and second at the british grand prix
01:35:39And at the spanish grand prix two weeks ago in france here today in austria
01:35:4416 points times four from those four races alone
01:35:49Barrichello just about saved ferrari's bacon, but it was not a very convincing
01:35:55Demonstration one has to say because he was 30 seconds behind mika hackenden
01:36:00And villeneuve who was fourth was left button for the third time this year scores world championship points
01:36:07By finishing fifth after having started 18th a terrific drive
01:36:11And mika salo who started ahead of jenson button finishes behind him six position one world championship point
01:36:20Seventh johnny herbert eighth good finish for marc. Genet and minardi ninth pedro deniz
01:36:25So both the saubers were in the top 10
01:36:29Alex wurtz the sole benetton in 10th position luciano berty finishes
01:36:35Only lapped twice in his first grand prix
01:36:38And that was for jaguar both the jaguars there for finish and that is an excellent achievement after the problems
01:36:44They've been having last one to finish three laps down gaston. Mazzucane from argentina in 12th position and james
01:36:52Well, I'll tell you marie ron is very very happy. You've got your world champion
01:36:55He's got his magic back a tremendous day for the mclaren team
01:36:58Yes, good. Very good. Very happy
01:37:01great for the team everybody back home and
01:37:04I think
01:37:05You know both drivers just did a great job
01:37:07You had to hang a few boards out to them to tell them to slow down at several stages
01:37:10We did at any stage you tell them to hold station or were they racing each other all the way?
01:37:14no, they uh, once once mika had enough lead over david to uh,
01:37:19manage anything that could happen the pit stop we slowed them both down, but uh,
01:37:23they drove very well together and uh
01:37:25It was hard for us to see them race so hard at the beginning
01:37:27But but but once it was uh optimum
01:37:30uh
01:37:32Gaps, then it was there's no safe chance to race each other and uh,
01:37:35Be pleased for them both big party and working tonight. Well done ron. Thank you
01:37:39No change in the top six in the driver's championship, but now just eight points top covers the first three
01:37:46Michael schumacher six points ahead of david coulthard who is still second
01:37:50But mika hacken in third position 48 points six behind michael schumacher two behind david coulthard
01:37:57It's going to be a terrific finish to this world championship series
01:38:01And we've still got the german hungarian belgium italian
01:38:06The american grand prix at indianapolis for the first time on september the 24th
01:38:11And then off to the far east for japan on october the 22nd and malaysia
01:38:16Which is finishing the season the 17th race on october the 22nd
01:38:21And I confirm that mclaren are now leading ferrari by six world championship points in the
01:38:27Constructor's championship having taken second place to them all the way up to now
01:38:33And williams had passed bennett on to third
01:38:37surely
01:38:38Schumacher can't lose this world championship again this year. He was running away wasn't he so easily at the beginning of the year
01:38:45McLaren seemed to have no reliability coulthard lost his points in brazil. It just seemed
01:38:49So easy for michael now. He's got two mclaren drivers ganging up on him
01:38:53They're just two points apart and six points six and eight points behind him
01:38:58So michael really has got his hands full but worse than that murray the mclaren at the moment is a faster race car
01:39:06And qualifying I don't think there's much in it overall at the various circles, but in the race the mclaren is faster. Yes
01:39:14You have you have to remember that michael schumacher is a superlatively good driver and he can normally make up for something
01:39:22The ferrari is undoubtedly closer to the mclaren than it was last year. I mean here last year
01:39:27The two mclarens were a full second faster than ferrari in qualifying and that was a long way from the case today
01:39:36but as you rightly say the
01:39:38the mclaren mercedes
01:39:40Combination is better than the ferrari chassis and ferrari engine combination
01:39:47and
01:39:48It's going to take an awful lot of work by ferrari to get closer because once the season has started it is so difficult
01:39:57With testing and two weeks gap between each race and having to go to the next race
01:40:03To develop faster than the team ahead of you
01:40:06What was significant is when mclaren went to ferrari's test track in mugello last week panis
01:40:11The test driver was quicker both days than michael schumacher in the ferrari where he uses the car quite a lot
01:40:16So ferrari will have to regroup they'll have to come back with something stronger
01:40:21They've got ross braun and rory burn and a host of brilliant engineers at the ferrari factory
01:40:26Surely they can come up with something they need to now
01:40:29Otherwise I can't see them being able to defend I can't see michael being able to defend the onslaught
01:40:35of hacken and
01:40:37Talking about olivier panis incidentally. He's done such a superb job as test driver for mclaren
01:40:43This year I would not be at all surprised to see him back in formula one as a competitor next year
01:40:49Perhaps for the arrows team
01:40:52That's my tip for the future. Let's see whether it works out. That's a very happy
01:40:57Hey hacken
01:41:00I mean the story that
01:41:03Because of her pregnancy mika hacken was losing motivation this proved to be
01:41:09so much nonsense
01:41:12Big crowd here in austria. They've seen
01:41:15An excellent race. It was it was a pity frankly that the
01:41:20Potential battle between schumacher once he got past barry keller as he would have done
01:41:26Was it was was beaten but so you can see how happy mika is
01:41:30Rejuvenated you don't see him as a bullion does that that's a sort of schumacher stance
01:42:00So
01:42:02So
01:42:04So
01:42:06So
01:42:28Lots of very happy fins here the finnish national anthem for mika
01:42:33There's a lot of british people here who will be equally happy to hear the british national anthem for mclaren
01:43:03So
01:43:28I see dave bryan who is the team manager for mclaren his
01:43:33Very rightly going to receive the constructors trophy, but mika hacken gets the driver's award from dr
01:43:38Wolfgang schussel who is the federal chancellor of the republic of austria
01:43:44Dave bryan now gets the winning constructors trophy from dr. Boris. Nemchik
01:43:50Who's the?
01:43:52Director of mobile here in austria who have sponsored the race to david kukla
01:43:58Having got his trophy
01:44:01Is
01:44:16Three very happy men after what has been a very significant
01:44:21Austrian grand prix which has seen mclaren take the lead in the constructors championship
01:44:28And the three drivers at the top separated by a mere eight points
01:44:35Thanks very much

01:46:38Anonymous race
01:46:40Is
01:46:57The brazilian
01:47:10Foreign
01:47:25Is
01:47:39Bennetton is in third place.
01:47:41Williams...
01:47:42No, Williams is in third place.
01:47:44Bennetton is in fourth place.
01:47:46And B.A.R. is in fifth place.
01:47:51And we are waiting for the press conference with...
01:47:54Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard and Robens Paricello.
01:47:59It has remained dry in Austria.
01:48:01Yesterday not, today it is.
01:48:03It's blowing nicely.
01:48:05These people are trying to get a glimpse...
01:48:08...of a matador.
01:48:38Going around the first corner...
01:48:40...when I was heading for turn two...
01:48:42...they showed yellow flags.
01:48:44And I was a bit surprised.
01:48:46Why are they showing yellow flags over there?
01:48:48But then later on after turn two...
01:48:51...the team informed...
01:48:54...about the safety car and...
01:48:57...and it was impossible to really see what happened.
01:48:59But then when I went next lap I saw...
01:49:02...a lot of cars on the gravel so...
01:49:06...I realised...
01:49:08...realised what happened.
01:49:10Now early on in the race you received...
01:49:12...a shift rev sign from your pit.
01:49:14What was that?
01:49:17Yeah...
01:49:19...it's something what the driver...
01:49:21...doesn't necessarily want to sometimes see.
01:49:25Basically it means...
01:49:29...it's no point to...
01:49:31...rev the engine in the maximum RPM.
01:49:34So you don't have to take everything...
01:49:36...out of the engine.
01:49:38In that point...
01:49:40...personally I was not sure exactly...
01:49:42...was there a problem...
01:49:44...or did they show me just...
01:49:46...it was no point to push.
01:49:48So automatically I did...
01:49:50...drop to RPM...
01:49:52...couple hundred revs and...
01:49:54But there had been no team orders at that point?
01:49:56What?
01:49:58No team orders at that point?
01:49:59Sorry I didn't hear that.
01:50:01Make a look. Well done.
01:50:03Thank you.
01:50:04David, you made a super start...
01:50:06...equal with Micah...
01:50:08...and then seemed to brake very hard into turn one.
01:50:10Did you change of heart going into that?
01:50:13Well, you have to brake hard...
01:50:15...for the corners, first of all.
01:50:17And being on the inside...
01:50:20...then...
01:50:22...you know, you never come quite sure...
01:50:24...exactly where the dust is...
01:50:25...and how much grip you're going to have.
01:50:26So I took it as far as I felt comfortable.
01:50:28And obviously Micah had the advantage...
01:50:30...because he was on the outside.
01:50:31So you just have to sometimes accept it.
01:50:33You know, you can't brake as hard...
01:50:35...and as late on the inside line...
01:50:36...as you can on the outside.
01:50:37It's as simple as that.
01:50:38Micah pulled out...
01:50:40...a significant gap in the first stint.
01:50:41Did you have any problems?
01:50:42Because he then came back...
01:50:43...and set fastest lap right at the end...
01:50:45...to prove that you had the pace.
01:50:46No, not especially.
01:50:47I was...
01:50:48...first of all, as you can probably imagine...
01:50:50...quite happy with...
01:50:52...the outcome of the first lap...
01:50:53...because that gave me...
01:50:55...an opportunity right away...
01:50:56...to close in a lot on Michael.
01:50:58And it became clear after about...
01:51:00...eight or nine laps...
01:51:01...that the extra fuel I was carrying initially...
01:51:03...meant that Micah was able...
01:51:04...to open up a slight gap.
01:51:05So then there was no real point...
01:51:07...to battle really hard...
01:51:09...because, you know, I'm chasing...
01:51:11...a slightly quicker car at that point.
01:51:13And in reality, I could have turned...
01:51:15...what was an easy six points...
01:51:17...into maybe nothing...
01:51:18...if we were really battling hard on the track.
01:51:20So I was quite comfortable to just...
01:51:22...today, accept the six points...
01:51:24...try and hope the car was reliable...
01:51:26...which it was.
01:51:27And I said to the guys in the slow-down lap...
01:51:29...the car has finished every Grand Prix...
01:51:31...since Brazil, including Brazil.
01:51:33And I think that's fantastic reliability...
01:51:35...and hopefully that'll continue...
01:51:37...for the rest of the season.
01:51:38You're now just six points...
01:51:40...behind Michael Schumacher.
01:51:41Are you thinking of the world title yet?
01:51:43No, I don't think there's any need...
01:51:46...to think about that.
01:51:47You know, it's individual races that...
01:51:49...if you do well in all of those...
01:51:50...then the reward for that...
01:51:51...is having more points than the others...
01:51:53...in a world championship.
01:51:54So I just want to look towards...
01:51:56...the next Grand Prix...
01:51:58...and I think we'll be strong there...
01:52:00...I think I'll be strong there...
01:52:01...and try and get maximum points at that race.
01:52:04Well done, David. Thanks a lot.
01:52:05Rubens, you're probably the best qualified here...
01:52:07...to comment on the first corner mayhem.
01:52:09How did you see it?
01:52:11Well, actually I didn't see very much.
01:52:14I saw that Michael came on the inside...
01:52:17...and I didn't want to make any problem for him...
01:52:22...because, I mean, we're teammates...
01:52:25...we have to work together for Ferrari.
01:52:27But all of a sudden I was hit by somebody...
01:52:31...and obviously I went out on the track...
01:52:34...on the gravel...
01:52:35...and, you know, I was lucky to survive then...
01:52:39...and really I'm lucky to finish third today...
01:52:41...because the car was undrivable...
01:52:43...until I came to the pit stop...
01:52:45...and then we made a little bit of adjustment.
01:52:47And so the car...
01:52:49...it was simply not what I expected...
01:52:53...just because the floor was broken.
01:52:56And that's why you seemed unable...
01:52:57...to do anything about Pedro de la Rosa?
01:52:59Exactly, I mean, I was struggling...
01:53:01...with a very loose car at that point...
01:53:04...and I was just hoping that things would change.
01:53:09It changed later on after the pit stop...
01:53:11...but it was too late.
01:53:13Rubens, many thanks.
01:53:15Micah, McLaren have now taken the lead...
01:53:18...in the Constructors' Championship by eight points.
01:53:20Good.
01:53:21We go to Hockenheim, a power track...
01:53:23...you've got a very good engine...
01:53:24...you must feel very confident there?
01:53:27There's all the reasons to feel confident, yes.
01:53:30To go to Hockenheim...
01:53:32...all the past years...
01:53:35...we always have been very competitive over there...
01:53:37...and very quick.
01:53:39So we're going to go flat out.
01:53:41We are confident.
01:53:42Thank you, Micah, and well done.
01:53:43And now just a word from you and Rubens...
01:53:45...in your own languages, please.
