00:00:00The two things together it seems fairly obvious that the software problem is what's causing the fuel pressure problem
00:00:05but that's all we've heard from the cyber team and
00:00:08It was so obvious on that car. Massa was driving that surely they must have been able to resolve it by now
00:00:15ben mylander will be driving the
00:00:18Safety car the pace car at the start of this race as we're getting all prepared now
00:00:23For the start of the warm-up lap and then the race start itself
00:00:28The ferraris looking to continue their successful run here in australia
00:00:34They have won on the last three occasions eddie irvine
00:00:38In 1999 and michael schumacher for the past two years today
00:00:42It is rubens barrichello who will lead the ferraris at the start of this race
00:00:46But for how long will he let michael schumacher through I can't see that happening in the early stages at least
00:00:53But michael will want to earn the lead of this race for himself behind them
00:00:58They'll be watching out for the williams bmws. Let's take another look at the track layout
00:01:03Once again here
00:01:03We've got those sectors to look for the intermediate sections that give us a good idea as to when people are on a quick lap
00:01:09the lap record at the moment is
00:01:11Michael schumacher's a one minute 28.214, but we've seen an improvement in times this weekend. That is likely to go today
00:01:18Well, it will do but it's again going to be very weather dependent
00:01:22Well, there's a bit of a you know, montoya still standing talking to gerhard pergo
00:01:26I'd love to know what they were discussing the smile on gerhard's face gives me a clue
00:01:30But uh montoya just three minutes before he's even into his car. No, he seems to be extremely relaxed interesting discussion going on
00:01:38Patrick said go on you've got a day job to do get into your car
00:01:42But interesting adrian talking to adrian yui talking to patrick head and mario willen from the mercedes-benz team
00:01:49And of course adrian yui worked with patrick head in the williams team some years ago before he moved on to the mclaren team
00:01:56and
00:01:58Meanwhile, michael schumacher just taking a little sip to
00:02:02Get himself refreshed before the start of this grand prix the lower temperatures, of course will reduce the dehydration that they suffer from
00:02:10Throughout the grand prix distance one of the fittest drivers probably the fittest driver in formula one
00:02:16Michael schumacher takes his training so seriously
00:02:18Let's take another quick look at the lineup for today's grid
00:02:21Then rubens barrichello on pole position the fourth of his career michael schumacher
00:02:26Winner here for the last two years in a row ralph schumacher his best qualifying performance here in australia
00:02:32David caulfield a former winner around this circuit and his new teammate kimmy reichan and lining up fifth one pablo montoya
00:02:39Making it starting his second season in formula one. Jarno trulli for reno in seventh and giancarlo fisi keller
00:02:45They've swapped teams those two
00:02:46They're both on the fourth row ahead of felipe massa and nick heidfeld driving for sauber another strong performance
00:02:52From the swiss sauber team and then behind those two we could see the cars of button and olivier panis
00:03:00Then it's jack villeneuve mika salo for toyota heinz-harold frentzen in the arrows alan mcnish in the second toyota enrique
00:03:07Bernalde and mark weber the australian making his debut this weekend eddie irvine back in 19th place ahead of teammate pedro de la rosa
00:03:15Alex young and takuma sato bringing up the rear
00:03:19There's a little bit of a panic going on with montoya and the team that can't find the seat belts
00:03:23And the team are going to have to clear off. They should have been off all remaining personnel leave the grid at one minute
00:03:29They've got 30 seconds to get that job done or else montoya is going to be in a problem
00:03:34Well, this is uh dramatic stuff indeed
00:03:36And perhaps it wasn't just nonchalance that meant he wasn't in the car a little while ago
00:03:41There must have been some sort of problem patrick having a quick 15 seconds to go
00:03:46And everybody very aware that they've got to get him safely strapped in and sorted
00:03:51Tire blankets are coming off now five
00:03:54four
00:03:55three
00:03:56Two one they should all be getting off the grid now
00:04:02Well, come on get the car on the ground if you're gonna do that
00:04:05We got one minute to get it on the ground get the starter in
00:04:08Get the starter this is reminiscence of belgium grand prix last year where ralph schumacher's car was left up on the stands
00:04:17Okay down on the ground down on the ground
00:04:25Well, that was a very very close call
00:04:27So you could see montoya smiling there. He uh, perhaps he enjoyed that a little bit a bit of a buzz just to
00:04:33Get ready for the start of this race
00:04:36Right, we are all prepared now then for the final formation lap before the start of the grand prix
00:04:43And you think he might have been angry. He was angry yesterday when they sent him out in qualifying when it was raining
00:04:49Yes, we've got somebody who's got a problem down there
00:04:51the mid section of the grid
00:04:54and uh, i'll try and take a look and see who that is one two
00:04:58We'll spot that in just a moment. I think it's one of the arrows. It might be frenson in fact
00:05:02Wait till all the cars go. It is heinz harrell franson in the arrows. He'll have to wait until the entire field
00:05:09Goes past and also eddie. Irvine slew away as well
00:05:13franson
00:05:14Bernoldi, I beg your pardon
00:05:16So the team will now have an opportunity to roll the arrows
00:05:19Well, it was franson and but bernoldi was caught behind franson. He couldn't move because all the other cars were coming past
00:05:27First race of the season often throws up things like this
00:05:32Just trying to listen on the radio
00:05:35unexpected
00:05:36Problems at the start of the season. We've seen
00:05:40We've seen it before here in australia
00:05:43And dear oh dear, they still haven't got those two arrows cars off the grid
00:05:49This is really remarkable
00:05:51Reminds you of that time we talked about earlier when the two stewards were in trouble on the grid
00:05:55It's not quite as dramatic. There aren't flames coming out of the backs of the car
00:05:59But uh, nonetheless, it's not a very good start for arrows and tom walkinshaw won't be too impressed about that
00:06:06Now franson's car is going to be being pulled off
00:06:09To the onto the I don't think they can take I think this is going to have to be an aborted start
00:06:14In fact, yes, we could hear them calling
00:06:17Heinz harrell to get out of that car and get into the spare car
00:06:21And they'll have to start that from the pit lane
00:06:23Obviously as they rush to try and get these cars out of the way of the field, which is gradually making its way
00:06:29Around this albert park circuit track temperature up to 21 degrees at the moment
00:06:36The ferraris lead them round barrichello schumacher
00:06:39And ralph schumacher with koufard and reichen and everybody getting a bit of heat in the tires and frantic activity going on now
00:06:46John in the arrows pit. Yes, both arrows are still on the side of the racetrack
00:06:51And i'm just waiting to see how long it is before we see a signal
00:06:55From race control to say that this race. Well, they've got they got them both away
00:06:58So we're not going to have a problem
00:07:00but what a disaster for tom walkinshaw and the arrows team and that was all because
00:07:04Frenton had a problem that then involved bernoldi
00:07:07He couldn't get out and get past because he'd cars that were behind him filing past quite rightly, too
00:07:13Well tremendous disappointment for those guys behind tarrell frenton
00:07:16His first race for the arrows team was due to drive for prost remember
00:07:20But the prost team folding before the start of the season that freed up frentzen and tom walkinshaw snatched him and removed vestappen
00:07:30Still listening up on their radio try and catch what's going on down there as they
00:07:34Scrabble to get frentzen into the spare car to start from the pit lane. Now the ferraris are in position
00:07:43rubens barrichello the brazilian
00:07:46Did not win a race throughout
00:07:482001 despite being in the car that everybody said was the car of the season
00:07:53Can he make amends for that here today ross braun the master tactician?
00:07:59watching as we get ready for the start of this first grand prix of
00:08:052002 we gather that montoya's problem was a flat battery
00:08:09That's what the panic at williams was all about the panic at arrows. No doubt for a different reason
00:08:16Here it comes then all of that winter testing is behind them
00:08:20Now is when we truly find out how they are going to deal with 2002
00:08:26The australian grand prix is underway and it's a good start from the second row with ralph schumacher trying to squeeze through david
00:08:34And all contact ralph schumacher in the air and into the gravel trap and an actor and into the tie barrier as well
00:08:42And ralph schumacher cars all over the place salvas jordan's
00:08:46There's a toyota in the middle of that a par and it is a disastrous start to the australian grand prix ben
00:08:54I hope I didn't see this but I just suspected that
00:08:56What was going on at the front but what's going on to the back? This is going to be okay
00:09:00Let's get a t-car ready. It's going to be a t-car ride. We see the safety car ride
00:09:04It's going to be has to be a restart. You cannot continue the circuit in this condition yellow flags certainly right localized yellow flags ralph schumacher
00:09:12Was challenging rubens barrichello barrichello cut from left to right and then of course
00:09:17We saw what happened for the second race in succession here in australia ralph schumacher has been involved in a major accident
00:09:24It occurred here at turn one last year. It was turn three
00:09:27Well, it was david coulthard who made a brilliant start from the second row of the grid ralph also made a good start
00:09:33But it's coulthard who got in front and as the cars make their way around, of course
00:09:38They are taking it easy now, but well problems look at that so many drivers
00:09:45That is remarkable and looking on our timing and scoring system here all the cars from 12th
00:09:52Place onwards are stopped on the track 11 cars
00:09:56Are running at this one. In fact reichmann's just got going again. So reichmann's running 12 cars are running
00:10:01We've got barrichello ralph schumacher fisikella massa heidfeld button panis and mcnish
00:10:07They were all involved in this incident now
00:10:09Let's take a look here john at what happened but watch barrichello and ralph schumacher goes between the two ferraris
00:10:15He already accelerates his brother barrichello goes to the middle then more to the right then cuts
00:10:20ralph cuts back of course
00:10:22rubens breaks look up I mean
00:10:24Unbelievable ralph schumacher was so fortunate and he found the part of the safety runoff area with the most space
00:10:31Now watch again schumacher goes one way then barrichello the other way cuts back
00:10:36Barrichello breaks ralph outbreaks himself. Basically ralph missed his breaking point
00:10:41Yeah, it does look that way he went in without breaking as
00:10:45Barrichello breaks and just run into the back of him and look at the carnage behind
00:10:49As cars just all over the place felipe. Massa the car nearest to our camera here in the middle
00:10:55Well, it's just you can't see for the smoke one or two. The jaguars managed to sneak around. Yes, they did jaguars
00:11:00But driveshafts every lubrication you can imagine
00:11:04On the track and look everybody running back now to get to those
00:11:07single spare cars
00:11:10Well, what a dramatic start to the season fisikella there running back olivier panis as well
00:11:16It's turned into a running race rather than a grand prix for the moment as everybody sprints back to get into their spare cars
00:11:22But the safety car leads david coulthard around the laps are ticking away here
00:11:28At the moment and it's coulthard who is race leader. Indeed. It is and it's yano truly who's in second place. I mean really
00:11:35I'm, just sitting here thinking about what occurred
00:11:38I could understand that happening midfield but between two guys on the front two rows
00:11:43That I have to say is just outrageous raikkonen. I'm sure is the one that's going to come in for mclaren
00:11:48He's saying I didn't do anything wrong
00:11:51Well, what disappointment for rubin's pole position and then uh the hit from behind nothing he could do about it
00:11:58He was on the brakes for the first corner and ralph schumacher plowed straight into the back of him
00:12:04Well always a possibility. It's the first grand prix of the year. The nerves are jangling
00:12:08Let's take another look at this side to side. There was certainly a fair bit of weaving going on
00:12:13Well just again, it's it's just almost important ralph schumacher's car. It must have gone 20 feet up in the air
00:12:20before it fortunately came back down on all four wheels square and luckily the part of the
00:12:26gravel that he came down and allowed him the maximum amount of space before he actually hit that tire barrier, but I mean
00:12:33That was frightening. It was very frightening indeed
00:12:36But uh, it looks as though all the drivers are okay all out of their machines
00:12:39And david coulthard leads. Jarno trulli in the reno around third place Juan Pablo montoya
00:12:44Michael schumacher got squeezed back down to fourth in all of that and look eddie irvine and pedro de la rosa who I said managed
00:12:50To sneak around the outside. They're now up into fifth and sixth places
00:12:54Would you believe it's sato seventh weber the australian is in eighth then alex young
00:12:59Jack villeneuve and kimmy raikkonen now the race has not been stopped
00:13:02Let's just make sure what's going on here. The race has not been stopped. The safety car is out there
00:13:08but the race order remains as it is and
00:13:11If it stays like this john without stopping the race presumably these drivers won't be allowed out
00:13:15No, they're not cars
00:13:16The only time you can take the spare car is if the race is actually stopped
00:13:19Then we see raikkonen making his way into the pits
00:13:22The team have got a fair shit of rubber for him in case he either picked up something or there's been a damage
00:13:27To a wheel. I mean he was right in the midst of all that fortunately appeared to get through it clear
00:13:31Well, it's the nose must have been damaged somehow or other clipped maybe a part of another car or clipped another car
00:13:38ron dennis
00:13:39Controlling the whole operation from the pit wall
00:13:43and again diving down the back of raikkonen and something's happened to the
00:13:46Maybe some debris has gone down there or something. I don't know what it is. Certainly
00:13:49He must have undone the seat belts. He could not have moved forward like that
00:13:54Something's down there something caught down his back. It's irritating him
00:13:58Yeah, the belts must be a little loose because he's he can move a little bit at the moment
00:14:02He would not move like that unless the belts were disconnected
00:14:05Well, there's obviously a major problem down there with the seat or with something some
00:14:10Debris perhaps that got thrown around in that accident
00:14:13Something's been pulled out and he gets back into the field once again
00:14:18but
00:14:19Dear oh dear and also running there is heinz-harald frenzen now
00:14:22Remember, he'd already jumped into the spare car and started in the pit from the pit lane. Indeed
00:14:26So for frenzen, it's in a sense
00:14:28I mean, it's not so can say it's been a gift
00:14:30But at least he's had the opportunity to get back into the race
00:14:34In a circumstance which he could never have dreamed of what 10 seconds before the races are due to start
00:14:39well, and the fact that we have
00:14:41Only some 12
00:14:43Runners or 11 runners at the moment means that points could be a possibility another view here of the start
00:14:49It's ralph move very quick move over to the right then cuts back to the left
00:14:53But ruben you see just he doesn't even hit the brakes
00:14:56ruben's break for the corner which he's entitled to do obviously
00:15:00And the fact that ralph got himself behind barrichello and just had nowhere to go
00:15:03he was on the throttle and uh, well very very fortunate, but then as the
00:15:09The carnage look at the ferrari ross braun absolutely distraught the carnage that takes place
00:15:14Consequently because nobody can quite see what's going on there. Oh and sam michael
00:15:18And patrick head they're not happy. They think that's
00:15:21Well, it was a pretty frightening looking accident. What's horrendous horrendous?
00:15:25And as as their car their man flew into the air
00:15:28You just never know what's going to happen after they take off like that
00:15:31In fact, ralph was really very fortunate a lot of space a huge amount of runoff and the angle the car went off at
00:15:37There was time for it to slow down a bit before it got to to the tires now
00:15:42Still work going on down there in pit lane
00:15:44But let's just let you know once again that david coolfard is leading the australian grand prix behind him
00:15:50It's yano trulli in the runner there you see the leaders come through third place for montoya fourth place for michael schumacher
00:15:56Fifth place for eddie irvine de la rosa behind him then takuma sato mark weber just threw the picture there then alex young
00:16:03Jack villeneuve and then mikasalo has managed to get that car back onto the track
00:16:08Once again, heinz-harald frenzen is behind him as we take another look
00:16:13It's the move barrichello makes then schumacher counters
00:16:16That's ralph and then suddenly he just seems to forget he's got to put his brakes on
00:16:21And then he goes off running through down to the tires and barrichello
00:16:25Of course was spun out and then tire smoke everybody else hitting each other as a result
00:16:30That's enrique bernaldi that you see walking back now. He was stranded on the grid originally if you remember and I don't think
00:16:36There's any really much chance of him getting into the race as david coolfard leads them around
00:16:43The safety car being brought into action at the start of the season this year
00:16:48And uh, well, we saw a big accident here last year
00:16:50If you remember that was on the fourth lap of the race
00:16:54And this time they didn't even get into the first corner before we saw the first accident of the season
00:17:00well, just picking up some news from the pit lane valve schumacher saying that
00:17:04Well, he didn't say that rubens braked early, but he probably did brake fractionally early
00:17:08But you which is what you should do at the start of a grumpy into the first corner and ralph
00:17:14Simply just miscalculated. He made an error and the whole incident really is down to him
00:17:20Felipe massa
00:17:21What a great shame for this young brazilian who had impressed us all throughout practice and qualifying
00:17:27And now he's just one of the victims the other sauber as well
00:17:30I'm afraid is out
00:17:31So after such a promising performance from the sauber team in qualifying with both of their cars in the top 10
00:17:38It's all over for them already
00:17:45Nick heidfeld and felipe massa
00:17:48relegated to the pit lane peter sauber
00:17:50Absolutely gutted by the events that have taken place that have unfolded. I did anticipate the midfield being the problem area
00:17:58and
00:17:58I'd like to see maybe some of the onboard shots from those cars to see how much vision they actually had
00:18:04Or whether they just got transfixed of what was taking place ahead of them and they themselves, you know
00:18:09Didn't focus on what was immediately ahead of them
00:18:13Looking at kimmy reichanan here as he just cruises around behind the safety car
00:18:19But remember kimmy has been into the pits put a new set of tires on he's running in 11th
00:18:25position now
00:18:27and
00:18:29Well, we're just gonna have to keep an eye
00:18:31On the proceedings here incident involving frentzen under investigation by the stewards now
00:18:37Not quite sure what that's about at this point, but no doubt we shall
00:18:41discover soon
00:18:42well, all I can assume is that the procedure that occurred on the on the actual grid and then
00:18:47frentzen running and jumping into the spare car whether that is
00:18:51Caused a problem with the interpretation of the regulations
00:18:54Or whether it's something
00:18:56Subsequent on the grid on the track race safety car coming in this lap
00:19:01So the australian grand prix is going to get well and truly underway in a moment
00:19:05And this is great news for david kulfard
00:19:09he has got
00:19:10Jarno trulli behind him. He's got montoya then next up now. That was when frentzen joined
00:19:17Into the race. I wonder if that caused the problem
00:19:19All I can think is that he should have maybe waited until the entire fields had gone through
00:19:23Or maybe he broke he came across that yellow line, which you're not permitted to do
00:19:27We didn't see the full sequence. You just saw him come out of the pit
00:19:31But clearly something has caught the attention
00:19:33Of the race director and deputy director and they are taking it to the stewards
00:19:38All right safety car bringing them round. We'll be coming in this time around
00:19:42And david kulfard has the opportunity. He needs to try and open up an advantage over michael schumacher
00:19:49Schumacher has montoya immediately ahead of him in third place now
00:19:53What are the chances of montoya letting michael schumacher through?
00:19:57Not great
00:19:57I would say because montoya sees this as an ideal opportunity
00:20:01To stay in front of the ferrari and himself go chasing after kulfod
00:20:05The question really is how quick truly is going to be well, I think that's going to be the real
00:20:10bug for montoya and for michael schumacher because jarno trulli
00:20:14Believe me in a single lap is going to be plenty quick and he's not going to move over
00:20:18Because he's got two of the super teams behind him. He's there because of circumstance
00:20:22He's going to try and stick to the tail of david kulfod and work on kulfod and forget about montoya and michael schumacher
00:20:28But look at the two jaguars. I mean they have an appalling friday and an appalling saturday and here they are
00:20:34Not on merit, but just by circumstance fifth and sixth
00:20:37So here we go
00:20:38Then after four laps of the safety car david kulfod brings them through
00:20:43The last corner building up to speed and the race is well and truly underway now with kulfod leading for mclaren mercedes
00:20:50Jarno trulli in second place for reno montoya just locking a brake
00:20:55Into turn one and looking aggressive immediately michael schumacher in fourth
00:20:59Then the two jaguars coming through and we have lost so many cars from this race already
00:21:03Let me just tell you who's out. It's barry. Kello ralph. Schumacher fisty keller
00:21:08Felipe muscle and look at this
00:21:10Montoya tried to pass down the inside into turn six that was trying to get past truly
00:21:15He's allied or I beg your pardon turn three and he's allied in doing so michael schumacher to take away third place
00:21:21I mean one montoya to take a punt down the inside into turn three was a huge risk a big risk
00:21:27He is a racer, but that was perhaps not the wisest move at this point in the race and it's allowing david kulfod
00:21:35To do exactly what he wants to do and pull away from. Jarno
00:21:37Truly now michael schumacher will attack truly and try and move up into second
00:21:41He will not want to let david kulfod have free air for long and he will be trying to get past the blue and yellow
00:21:48Reno of the italian
00:21:50I've only seen in practice and in qualifying that the ferrari's top speed is only about 306 miles
00:21:56Ks per hour on the quickest part of the circuit. In fact, you're not truly was marginally quicker
00:22:01truly just covering the inside a little bit there into the
00:22:05Ascari corner, but schumacher wasn't able to get quite close enough
00:22:09Look at that the speed through the right hand of the ferrari looking so
00:22:13So fast, but this is where he's got to set up a possible overtaking maneuver
00:22:17Yes, but of course the reno has got straight line speed. Michael's got corner speed
00:22:21He's got momentum off the corner, but look nothing in acceleration
00:22:25He's not going to be able to do anything from here on down into the corner
00:22:28It's very risky to have a look down the inside particularly somebody who's being very racy like yano truly
00:22:33Yeah, and a late break there from michael schumacher actually allowed truly to pull away slightly
00:22:39So this is kulfod's opportunity to make a break and it's already three seconds
00:22:44Three seconds advantage for david kulfod over this battle for second. Let's take a look at what montoya was up to
00:22:51Tried to go down the outside a little bit just made a mistake. It wasn't even trying to pass
00:22:55He just got on the dirty part of the track
00:22:57Trying to place himself in such a way that he could get a run
00:23:00At truly at one of the later sections of the circuit
00:23:02He just made a misjudgment and he got caught by what is still an offline track. That's very very green
00:23:09So the battle for second place between yano truly the italian who's never won a grand prix made his debut
00:23:16Back here at melbourne and back in 1997. This is where michael schumacher's got to start his work
00:23:21He's got to get himself into position sufficiently close to truly coming through here
00:23:25But he can really get on the throttle and drive that ferrari out of turn 12
00:23:29Pick up such slipstream as there is and put himself in a position to dive down the inside, but truly is going to cover it
00:23:35Yes, it's not close enough
00:23:37Once again, and truly you can see he's driving the wheels off that renault to stay in front of schumacher
00:23:42You can see the car twitching around look at the speed differential
00:23:45Through the right-hander there at turn 14, but unless michael can find a good exit
00:23:52He's got a good chance because truly didn't do a good exit on 15. Michael's got the run of 16
00:23:57He's got the horsepower. He might take a chance truly will defend but just watch schumacher. Here he comes
00:24:02Can he get down the inside? Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Oh
00:24:07I thought that was going to be contact there, but they've managed to sort it out. But look at this
00:24:11It's now put michael under attack from montoya because michael schumacher lost ground
00:24:16Oh and truly's locking up montoya taking that wider line, but michael and again, he makes the mistake there
00:24:22Well, he doesn't learn the first time and he certainly didn't learn the second time montoya
00:24:26Got the momentum back up while this battle for second place is going on and yet again
00:24:30He tried to take that wide line to give him position
00:24:33So as when he comes through four out of five and into turn six, he could be in position to challenge
00:24:38Here's the view head on schumacher thinking. Well, I will I will I will
00:24:42He just cuts me off
00:24:43But good motor racing formula one good racing from the two of them
00:24:47Yes, absolutely commitment from both truly and schumacher
00:24:51But this is still allowing coolthard to get away four and a half seconds is david coolthard's lead here truly in second place
00:24:57Michael schumacher in third then it's montoya eddie. Irvine is still in fifth place
00:25:02He's dropped about six seconds off this battle that we're watching as michael closes up to truly once again
00:25:08The big problem for michael schumacher is that yano truly is running about a second and a half slower than david coolthard
00:25:15And therefore the speed that schumacher is capable of running at is also a down about a second and a half
00:25:20Coolthard's disappearing into the distance. He's seven seconds ahead of yano truly at this moment
00:25:25Now here we go
00:25:27Through these last two corners truly is a bit more cautious this time gets on the power earlier
00:25:31Look at the lead that david coolthard has as we look back up that start finish straight and michael schumacher not close enough
00:25:38On this time to try and take a dive down the inside. He's going to have to pressure truly particularly through
00:25:43For don't truly's last to truly span michael's through it's all over for yano truly the back of the car damage
00:25:49Now montoya comes down once again looking for that outside line. Can he wait? Can he be patient?
00:25:55Wow, what an amazing race we're watching in the early stages truly's car safety cars got to come out i'm sure
00:26:01Yeah, surely we'll see the safety car coming out. Oh
00:26:07How much wider do you want to go he was almost on the grass there completely with that car
00:26:11But he managed to hold it together and this is great racing
00:26:15But coolthard has a 6.6 second advantage safety car is on standby
00:26:20We're waiting to see whether it's going to be activated or not
00:26:23Look, it just under acceleration the back end of the car gets away spins inwards hits the end of the barrier
00:26:29well, we'll uh, absolutely a shunt therefore truly that he will look at this the wheel spinning you would think I mean
00:26:36These cars have got traction control. The benetton has got the best launch control of anybody yet as if it suddenly became inactive
00:26:44Yeah, it certainly broke away very quickly in the mid part of the corner michael saying thank you very much
00:26:49But this is going to wipe out coolthard 6.6 second lead
00:26:53Whoa, well, that is such bad news for the scotsman
00:26:56He's worked so hard on these last few laps and now it's all going to be wiped out by the safety car
00:27:01Indeed and it's going to make the battle at the front a battle between mclaren with michelin and ferrari with bridgestone
00:27:07And we're still looking at track temperatures which are rising
00:27:11So all that is going towards helping the michelin cars and that is now a michelin sandwich with the bridgestone the meat in the middle
00:27:19Oh, wow, this is fantastic
00:27:21Oh coolthard up in front now has michael schumacher filling his mirrors with montoya just looking for his opportunity
00:27:29To sneak through into second place once they get uh, the all clear once again
00:27:34They're going past the stricken car of trilley. This allows the other cars to close up. Irvine
00:27:39Now look at reichen and john reichen has been making up some good ground
00:27:42We've been concentrating on that battle up front
00:27:44Of course we have but reichen has moved himself up into fifth place
00:27:48And he's going to be right in the frame because he's got eddie erda eddie irvine ahead of him now
00:27:52That will not be an easy overtake eddie will fight
00:27:55Cat and dog for that fourth place, but reichen and will have the horsepower advantage. He will have the car advantage
00:28:03Now let's take a look at this frenson
00:28:06Wave yellow flag. Now. What are you doing? What are you doing? There's a yellow flag. We could see it fenson get back
00:28:13Well, he did he did do that. So that's good news
00:28:16It was when the safety car came out and those guys were at the back part of the track
00:28:20Uh, but he was sensible enough to uh, give the place back
00:28:23There's mark weber and mark running in ninth position and let's give you a quick run through the field now
00:28:29The position's after nine laps cool tape. So tape
00:28:32What's that hanging off cool?
00:28:33Todd's car is it some tape that's come loose between the exit of the air ducts and up around the airbox something looking a bit
00:28:39Odd there, uh, the position's cool thad shumaka montoya then irvine reichen and takuma sato
00:28:45Then de la rosa seventh ahead of villeneuve weber and alex young
00:28:49Mika, salo is still going he's down in 12th. He's made a stop fredson's just made a stop as well
00:28:56And uh, that's about it
00:28:58So looking at the cars that are out of this race a huge long list of them
00:29:03Look at them all nick heidfeld jensen button olivier pannis alan mcnish as well
00:29:08Felipe massaggi and carlo fisichella ralph schumacher rubens barrichello all
00:29:13Out of this race as jano truly makes his way back towards the pits
00:29:16I mean you can understand what truly was trying to do. He was under extreme pressure from michael schumacher
00:29:21And really probably the car just didn't have the grip under it to sustain that degree of pressure and that degree of commitment
00:29:28That michael schumacher was putting jano truly under this is the view back from the safety car this year. It's the new sl
00:29:3455 for mercedes with that 5.5 v8 supercharged engine
00:29:39476 horsepower and it sounds wonderful. It does sound good
00:29:43Doesn't it dave richards the boss now of the bar honda team olivier pannis watching from the pit wall their remaining car
00:29:50Of jacques villeneuve still in the race running in eighth position as the clear up operation
00:29:56On the exit of turn two continues to get jano truly's car out of the way into the pits
00:30:00Then comes villeneuve and bernaldi now bernaldi did go back out
00:30:05Interestingly enough they got him back out in that car that didn't want to run at the start of this race
00:30:10And he has rejoined but of course he's five laps down jacques villeneuve
00:30:14He rejoins after that very quick pit stop
00:30:18And it's interesting to see coming in to make that early stop look like a just a routine stop 10 laps completed and this is
00:30:26real
00:30:27Indy car style use of the safety car period to top up with fuel and hope that that helps him in the later
00:30:35Part of this race jacques villeneuve taking full advantage running towards the back of this lead lap
00:30:41Anyway, not losing many places by coming in that might work for him later in the race in terms of fuel strategy
00:30:47the
00:30:48Field coming through there is mark weber the australian
00:30:51Managing to get through that first lap
00:30:54incident cleanly
00:30:56And now an opportunity for him perhaps with not so many cars in this race. You never know
00:31:01You might even get that minardi up into the points
00:31:05Australia at last having a driver to cheer on it's been a while the most successful australian driver
00:31:11Of course was jack brabham
00:31:13So jack brabham as he is now three times a world champion
00:31:18But some years ago alan jones also a world champion for australia back in 1980
00:31:23But it has been a while since we've seen a competitive australian driver in the formula one racks
00:31:31Now truly's car on the back of the transporter there being moved out of the way
00:31:36So it shouldn't be too long before we see the safety car making its way back into the pits
00:31:40There's a little bit of clearing up perhaps still to be done there
00:31:44But uh truly's race all done. I think as you said john, it was certainly a case of him hanging on as much as possible
00:31:50And in the end the car perhaps wasn't capable of it
00:31:53Safety car will be coming in
00:31:55On this lap. Well, i've just been picking up on rubens barrichello
00:31:59And one thing he's saying is he thought the decision not to stop the race was a mistake. He thought there was too much
00:32:05Bits and pieces of cars and cars around there
00:32:07But clearly he's speaking from a a moment of wanting to get into the spare car
00:32:11But also he was saying that he thought that he actually braked marginally later than he'd expect and that ralph just completely misjudged
00:32:20Coulthard's got off at the restart. Schumacher takes the lead. Montoya goes past him now. That is interesting
00:32:26They've got past before they get to the line and all that. I wonder how that one's going to work out
00:32:32Montoya attacking to the outside. He's passed him under brakes. Can he get around the corner? He did what an
00:32:38Unbelievable overtake by the colombian montoya which stuck out on michael schumacher big time
00:32:45Wow, what a restart
00:32:47Coulthard off on the grass montoya takes schumacher and now these two are at battle once again and the michelin tire certainly working well
00:32:56Under those conditions as montoya gets past michael schumacher gets through the first two corners
00:33:01And now he's going to try and pull away from the ferrari and one of david coulthard
00:33:06He's stuck behind the two jaguars. Let's look again and see coming into turn 15
00:33:10He locks up that inside front wheel suddenly. He's got he can't slow the car down
00:33:16I don't believe david coulthard
00:33:18You've got the greatest chance of your career to win a grand prix here in australia and you blow it like that
00:33:24Oh, that is such a disappointment. He's still in the race
00:33:27But look he's behind his teammate now kimmy reichen and he's dropped to fifth position irvine up into third place in the jack
00:33:34He's not going to be able to live for the pace of these lead to we know that jaguar
00:33:38Has not got the performance at the moment, but he is in third place and irvine
00:33:44Will desperately try and hold on to that what a result that would be if they can hold on long long way to go in
00:33:49this race only
00:33:51The 11 laps been completed so far and what drama we've seen and we've got the battle that everyone's been talking about
00:33:59On the lead up to this season montoya versus michael
00:34:03I mean what about unbelievable past montoya did get a better run off turn 16
00:34:07He had the momentum, but he just pulled out an unsheared grunt went past the ferrari and not only did he go past him
00:34:13He could get ahead of him before he had to brake michael actually backed off earlier than I thought it was necessary
00:34:19Again, there's some tape or something hanging off the back of kuhlfeldt's car. It's behind the airbox
00:34:24It's not interfering with the car in any way. It just looks slightly untidy
00:34:29So these two the gap, uh, not really changing too much
00:34:32Just a one second gap between them michael schumacher right over the curb
00:34:35We saw montoya using that curb just a little while ago
00:34:39Now we begin to begin to get a picture of the relative pace of these two
00:34:44Cars the williams bmw up front. It is a new car the 2002 car behind it
00:34:50The ferrari the championship winning car effectively of last year, although with modifications
00:34:56And it's brought up to spec and this is the battle
00:34:59But we've got another battle going on behind that because reichen and kuhlfeldt are now ahead of eddie
00:35:04Irvine irvine back down to fifth
00:35:05So there's a battle going on between the two mclaren drivers
00:35:08There's a little over a second and a bit between them here
00:35:10We can see again what a brilliant bit of overtaking by montoya
00:35:14Michael schumacher went to the inside blocked but montoya still on the gas when michael's off and he locks up a brake. Look at look at
00:35:21Goodness, there's so much going on sato keeping out of the way of that one
00:35:24Only just that giving michael schumacher a chance to close up to montoya there
00:35:27And he's right under the rear wing of montoya as they come out of that last corner to start finish straight
00:35:33Can he do anything look at the acceleration important to see well bmw there certainly seem to have the edge
00:35:38They've got a superior top speed. This is one of the what's the fact is the quickest part of the racetrack?
00:35:43the cars in qualifying were doing something like
00:35:46300 and well in the case of ralph schumacher 310 montoya was doing 309
00:35:50Michael schumacher was only doing 306. So at that part of the track the advantage clearly lies with the williams
00:35:56But ferrari running probably more downforce is able to close up in the corner. He's got more corner grip
00:36:03Look at that fantastic view that we have access to right over the rear wing of montoya's car looking back
00:36:10At michael schumacher and this is what it's all about the two top drivers
00:36:16Battling wheel-to-wheel as we've seen already in this race and schumacher is not being dropped at all by montoya
00:36:23But interestingly the quickest car on the circuit right now is the man that threw the lead away in turn 15
00:36:28And that's david coulthard making amends for that appalling error
00:36:33Well, let's see what he can do by the end of this race
00:36:35His teammate kimmy reichen and is in third place coulthard himself in fourth irvine in fifth
00:36:40De la rosa sixth mark weber has moved up to seventh and that looks like takuma sata going very slowly
00:36:46Or is he just keeping out of the way?
00:36:48He's going slowly as well as keeping out of the way. Oh, don't pull across the track
00:36:52And he's trying to get out of the way of fenson, but in doing so he's compromising
00:36:55But look michael schumacher trying to position himself to get a run off turn 16 to do what?
00:37:00Montoya did to schumacher schumacher is looking to repay that present, but he's not got enough momentum
00:37:06Now on the power once again, it should be the bmw
00:37:09Although look at this he picked up a bit of a toe here having a little look down the inside but not close enough
00:37:14John what we saw last year. I wonder if that's coming in the michelin tire
00:37:18Often worked very well initially went through a little bit of a patch where it wasn't so quick and then came in again
00:37:24I wonder if we're going to see that happen this season
00:37:26Well, I think also what's occurring is that because i've now run a number of laps or interlap
00:37:30That's 40 or 44 laps remaining at 58
00:37:33The tire temperature has built up. It's now operating probably in its operating zone
00:37:38And that's giving montoya that little bit of extra grip that he may not have had
00:37:42But also it's preventing michael schumacher getting a good run on montoya particularly coming on to pit straight
00:37:48He's hurting in terms of top speed. He is quicker in other parts of the circuit
00:37:52The split times are marginally favoring schumacher one part but benefiting montoya in another part
00:37:58These two guys are absolutely on the limit you can see by the amount of road they're using
00:38:03Flicking up the grass here there and everywhere coming up towards turns 11 and 12 fast left followed by the right
00:38:10And again over the curb on the exit not quite on the grass that time but very close to it
00:38:15Montoya having to keep an eye on his mirror
00:38:17This is our view back from the race leader's car looking straight back at four times world champion
00:38:22Michael schumacher who does not like to be beaten and this is where schumacher really can get the job done
00:38:27He was quick here in practice and qualifying. He closes down to montoya again
00:38:31He's got to get himself into a position
00:38:33Montoya is holding the throttle schumacher can get on it more heavily and that's where he's got some advantage
00:38:38But look the straight line speed of that bmw williams is just sufficient to keep michael schumacher out of contact
00:38:44He moves into the inside now a little bit less grip on the inside
00:38:50It's getting close again
00:38:51It's a good chance schumacher again positioning himself now coming down into turn three on the outside of the corner
00:38:57That's upcoming. He's got to be careful. He knows what happened to montoya. He ran wide twice there an opening laps
00:39:03Oh, this is fantastic. This is like a formula ford race. Let alone a formula one race
00:39:07They're wheel to wheel all the time and the tension down there in the pit lane patrick head watching his man
00:39:14In control of this race at the moment, but look behind kimmy reichen and is joining in this battle
00:39:19He's been quietly getting on with the work. There is david kuthar trying to make up grind
00:39:24I mean what is going through this man's head?
00:39:25He must be absolutely completely mad with himself for allowing himself to be suckered into locking up a brake and losing four places
00:39:33Those ferrari guys look very calm, don't they?
00:39:35I don't know quite how they can feel that calm with this going on up front montoya with just a
00:39:40Fractional advantage over michael schumacher kimmy reichen and joining in on the party and david kuthar's not that far behind himself
00:39:48He's a another five seconds back. So he's still got plenty of work to do but he is going very quickly
00:39:53Back to the final segment of the circuit again schumacher quicker through third turn 13 into 14 hole station
00:39:59Nible is positioning himself. He doesn't want to overrun montoya
00:40:03He wants to be able to pick up the throttle drive the car through 15 and also maintain that momentum through 16
00:40:08So he can get onto the rear of the car and therefore as they come down into turn
00:40:13One at the end of the pit straight to ensure that he's got a chance to pass
00:40:17He's closing but again montoya defends down the inside michael can do nothing this time again
00:40:21But again montoya loses speed in the middle part and here comes michael
00:40:25Michael gets back into montoya and schumacher retakes the lead a round of applause for the ferrari mechanics
00:40:31But these two guys are really racing
00:40:33This is what motor racing is about wheel to wheel giving each other just enough room making tiny mistakes trying to take advantage
00:40:40And schumacher and montoya. This is what it's all about. Well, that is total brilliance from michael schumacher
00:40:46He knew that he forced montoya into turn one to brake late to not then have the ideal entry to the corner
00:40:52He's probably off the throttle too long
00:40:54Michael cut back to the right and just drove around him with about another five or six miles an hour advantage
00:40:59Now reichen is going to give a lot of heat to one pablo montoya. Yeah, but look at michael
00:41:04He's really beginning to pull away. He's definitely got the speed advantage here
00:41:08And now that he's managed to get past he is flying as he begins to pull out
00:41:13So montoya on the brakes very late can't get the car slow down has to straighten it up michael sees that region
00:41:18He just pulls over to the right and just drives around the outside. Thank you. Juan. Pablo
00:41:23I thought you were smarter than you are
00:41:25Well, that was fantastic, but you can't say that schumacher's looking over at montoya. He's watching him
00:41:30I bet you he's laughing his head off on that helmet. I bet he is indeed
00:41:33But uh, he didn't neither of them are really making mistakes
00:41:36It's just pure racing tactics and trying to find a way past but look at michael
00:41:41Really pulling away from these two as reichen and closes in on the back of the williams bmw of one pablo montoya
00:41:48And michael schumacher now really with clear air for the first time this afternoon
00:41:53131 298 and that is well virtually a second quicker than the rest of the field
00:41:58That's why the gap is opening up that quickly. Yes
00:42:01So now it really looks like the ferrari is working well on lap 17 of this race montoya 2.2 seconds behind
00:42:09we're on board here with kimmy reichen and and
00:42:12Is montoya struggling a bit more for grip the mclaren certainly looking good behind him?
00:42:17Well, montoya worked his car extremely hard in those laps when he was ahead of michael schumacher reichen has had clear air to run
00:42:24He's not had any pressure, but you know getting these two guys together
00:42:27It's a bit like the difference between a rock and a hard place
00:42:30Neither is going to give way but both are determined to make sure they can get that second place
00:42:34Let's just remind you david coulthard is running still behind this group. He's 4.3 seconds behind his teammate here
00:42:42Kimmy reichen and and coulthard in fact running marginally quicker than reichen and but it's going to take him a long time
00:42:48Maybe another five six laps if the situations as we're looking at remain station
00:42:53Well, you can see montoya still pushing very hard indeed that williams is leaping around all over the place as he tries to stay ahead
00:43:01of reichen and
00:43:02And there michael schumacher our race leader look at the gap back already there to montoya and reichen and well
00:43:08Michael schumacher got a clear road. He can now run at the car's full potential
00:43:12He wasn't able to do that when he was behind both coulthard and montoya, but now the ferrari it's quick in a lap
00:43:19But it's certainly vulnerable and straight line speed in this circuit a new fastest lap to michael schumacher
00:43:25And these two guys are quite a long way off that there's no doubt about it a 30.1
00:43:30For michael schumacher eddie irvine has come up into fifth place
00:43:35Well, he's in fifth place, but there's a problem there master pedro de la rosa
00:43:38So you can hear is a misfire
00:43:40So he'll be into the pits and see whether there's a cure for that or whether it's going to be a terminal stop
00:43:45So over and has just crossed the line in fifth place now crossing the line in sixth position
00:43:50uh with de la rosa in trouble, there's some uh
00:43:54Going to be a change there as weber has just gone over the line in sixth place
00:43:58Now de la rosa dropping down the order black flag for leaving the pits when the red light was on that was the reason why frentzen
00:44:04Was in trouble and that is a pretty serious offense. That is a great shame
00:44:08It's a black flag as opposed to a penalty. Is it john?
00:44:11Are they actually going to make him stop or is he going to have to it's over?
00:44:14It's over. It's finished black flag. He's on the pitch the red lights on that's disqualification
00:44:20Well, that's a great shame for the team
00:44:23Uh, it's all over for heinz-harold frentzen. That's all over for
00:44:27uh, so many drivers
00:44:29In this race, but remember bernaldi
00:44:33Yeah, you've got a black flag i'm afraid game over
00:44:41Poor heinz-harold won't like the sound of that
00:44:44Well one can only say that when the red light's on
00:44:47It says stop and the green light's on it says go
00:44:51And i'm sure heinz-harold can detect the difference between red and green if he can't
00:44:57He shouldn't be out there
00:45:01One of the most experienced drivers out there now the investigation on the other arrows car car 21
00:45:08Which is back out there?
00:45:09Bernaldi was stranded on the grid remember and then rejoined the race and I wonder if there might be something irregular
00:45:16I wondered actually how he managed to get away with that, but I didn't quite see the full sequence of events
00:45:21We'll find out whether the stewards are going to chuck out the other arrows as well
00:45:24Well, let's look back and see if we can find something. This is frentzen. I think coming out of the pits
00:45:28When the lights were red, but looking at bernaldi, I don't see anything of there
00:45:32It may be that bernaldi because the car was pushed off the grid and something to do with it
00:45:36I need to go through the rule book and check that one out
00:45:39Well, let's see what's happening up front michael schumacher 6.2 seconds his lead now over montoya montoya
00:45:46Just a fraction ahead there of kimi raikkonen still the battle for second third
00:45:50There they are going through the picture now and koufard is closing up because montoya is not able to go so quickly
00:45:56Koufard's closing up indeed
00:45:58It is what's happening is where I can and can't get close enough to have a go at montoya
00:46:02And raikkonen's pace is being dictated by that of juan pablo montoya
00:46:06So it may well be we could see I don't know what the strategy is. No one has given anything away
00:46:11Ordinarily most teams would opt for a long first session
00:46:14And then if they want to alter their strategy to do a very short dash to a second stop
00:46:20We have to wait but certainly montoya is losing time in corners
00:46:23Raikkonen is sitting there not able to get close enough to launch an attack onto the colombian in the meantime
00:46:29Koufard is closing down by the lap. He's down to 3.5 seconds
00:46:33Yeah, it's getting closer and closer frentzen's race is all over though as he clambers out of the arrows
00:46:40The end of a very strange afternoon for him
00:46:44And that's just disappointing but for so many teams for so many drivers here this afternoon
00:46:49Traveling thousands and thousands of miles john to compete at the first round of the championship
00:46:54And we've lost so many from this race. Is that still de la rosa cruising around slowly?
00:46:59Cruising around slowly. It looks like de la rosa can't really tell it's just a little bit far away
00:47:04But whoever it was certainly getting well and truly out of the way and I think it probably is de la rosa at the speed
00:47:08He's running that car has a misfire and it's a
00:47:11More run the circuit. I don't think it's going to last that much longer
00:47:14Here comes montoya followed by raikkonen just to remind you of the cars that are no longer in this race. Jarno trulli barry
00:47:21Kello, ralph schumacher fisichella
00:47:24Felipe massa nick heidfeld jensen button olivier pannis and alan mcnish nearly all of those taken out in the first corner accident
00:47:32at the start of this event
00:47:36Comparison of the lap times and the gaps here of kimmy raikkonen and david kulfar but
00:47:42Kulfar certainly being given an opportunity to close up because montoya can't quite match their pace
00:47:47No, he's taking lumps out of kimmy raikkonen and montoya
00:47:51And the gap as you saw prior lap was 3.5 seconds as kulfar comes out of eggs at turn 16
00:47:57We'll check and see how much he's gained it probably maybe down to about 3.1
00:48:02Stays at 3.5 surprisingly
00:48:04Maybe kulfar's just pushed that bit too hard as well
00:48:06And he's now beginning to suffer a little bit of tire degradation a little bit of loss of grip
00:48:11tom walkinshaw on the left speaking to
00:48:13Heinz harold frentzen and perhaps still an opportunity john to learn a little bit about the car from today's events
00:48:19Well, they would have learned something but of course it's disappointing and i'm sure tom speaks the same english as anybody else in formula one
00:48:25Does and they will say why did you not stop at the lights? Yeah, absolutely for a driver of frentzen's experience
00:48:31It is a very strange mistake to make but in the excitement of the moment perhaps
00:48:35Not aware that the lights were on red here is montoya our second place man. Kimmy raikkonen in third
00:48:42You know, it's easy to forget john that raikkonen's in only his second season of grand prix racing his debut for the mclaren mercedes team
00:48:50He looks like he's been running up front in grand prix's for years
00:48:53Well, he looked like that at the grand prix here last year. I felt him. He was so
00:48:57Confident so mature
00:48:58And again talking to the mclaren team. I mean they call him the ice man. They thought mika hakkanen was cool
00:49:04He's so cool. He's called the ice man and they believe he is a world champion
00:49:09even this year
00:49:11Look at that
00:49:13Well, that was a bit of a moment. Let's just watch him through these final couple of turns on the lap
00:49:19a bit smoother through the left hander
00:49:23But definitely lost a bit of ground through that previous
00:49:26It's just trying to look at the tires to see if there's any
00:49:28Sign of that feathering you get on the tire surface the tread where it starts to roll across the tire
00:49:34Something that's desperately obvious about it. You can't see any change. Sometimes you see a change of color
00:49:39Off again david coulthard
00:49:41I tell you you've got to get slapped legs and sent to bed with any tea tonight for what you're doing today
00:49:45Same corner as well. John. It's that turn 15. It is not working out for him yesterday in qualifying
00:49:50He encountered jack villeneuve there and got off the track and spun and that touched the wall now. What did he do this time?
00:49:58Well, he just did the same thing effectively, but without locking up the inside brake. I mean what is going on? I mean
00:50:04I would love to see david coulthard and ron dennis after this race
00:50:07Well, we'll have to find out perhaps. I mean we could always perhaps there is a problem with the braking on that car
00:50:13Perhaps he is suffering some sort of break. He's got a problem. Certainly you can see he's suddenly slowed right down
00:50:17Now whether that's the cause of the the problems, maybe there's something in the gear shift
00:50:21That's causing him to overrun the corner
00:50:23It could well be that the downshifts that we've seen seto have a problem with on the jordan and saturday
00:50:28Maybe there's something similar in the gearbox of coulthard's maybe i'm being a bit too harsh and unkind
00:50:33On david coulthard at this point. Well, maybe we'll find out soon. It does look though as though he's going into the pits
00:50:38That's good. He's his day's over. I reckon it's all over for david coulthard. That's a great disappointment
00:50:43He looked so well placed after that initial accident. He was out in front. He pulled away dramatically
00:50:49From those behind he'd opened up a 6.6 second advantage at one point
00:50:53Then the safety car came out and it was on the restart after the safety car that he went off
00:50:59He locked a brake as he began to build up speed
00:51:03And maybe there was some problem with the car developing there already
00:51:06Then he was able to put in some very quick laps as he caught up
00:51:09But something has gone seriously wrong and eddie irvine just trying to sneak through now with mikasalo in the toyota behind
00:51:15Yes, mikasalo is a lap down. He's running in ninth place, but eddie irvine is now up into fourth place
00:51:21I mean eddie irvine won the grand prix here in 1999 in a car. That was a winning car
00:51:25But suddenly from 19th in the grid to fourth even eddie in his most optimistic frame of mind couldn't have believed this
00:51:32David stayed out there. That's interesting
00:51:34We expected him to be coming in at the end of this lap
00:51:36But he may be in he will be in contact with the team and if it's maybe simply a problem with the systems
00:51:41He's got a backup system on the car
00:51:43They've been telling him what to do which buttons to push which sequence to push them in that may be
00:51:48I suspect it has been a downshift gear change problem and they've got a secondary backup system which they can activate now
00:51:55Of course this year john that uh, that's very relevant because there's a slight change in the rules in that the teams are allowed to transfer
00:52:01Data and and information from pits to car in a slightly different way to previous years. Yes, the regulations allow
00:52:07Ship to shore both ways
00:52:09So maybe the team have been able to recognize the problem
00:52:11And certainly alert coolthar to what to do or whether they can physically do it in the pits
00:52:16Well, I wouldn't be quite sure depends on the particular problem that coolthar has suffered from but in the meantime
00:52:21Michael schumacher has opened that gap up. It was 13.8 seconds
00:52:24He's done a lap in the one minute 29s already and he's up and gone
00:52:29He is disappearing up the road now, isn't he looking for a hat trick of victories here in melbourne 34?
00:52:36Laps to go still 24 laps have been completed
00:52:39So we're still somewhere short of half distance
00:52:42But he has opened up a very healthy 14 and a half second lead and isn't it ironic that the reason he's got this healthy
00:52:47Leaders because his little brother getting it so wrong
00:52:51Into the first corner on the opening lap black flag for the other arrows
00:52:55It's all over for the team for using the spare car after the start of the race
00:53:00So he obviously switched cars bernaldi and you're not allowed to do that
00:53:05Once the race is underway, he would be able to do it if their race had been red flagged
00:53:09But it wasn't and so bernaldi also has now been black flagged
00:53:13Well, that's what we anticipated the case to be
00:53:15But now michael schumacher with a healthy 14 and a half second lead he will build up an advantage possibly to
00:53:23The length of time it takes to enter the pit lane stop and do a regular pit stop and get back out
00:53:29That will be the instruction
00:53:30He's going to get from ross prawn on the pit wall to give themselves that margin that cushion
00:53:35In case when michael makes what I suspect will be his one and only stop of the day
00:53:40In case there's a problem
00:53:42Well just going through the picture there was mark weber well up into the points now
00:53:46He's in sixth position. What an amazing result that would be
00:53:50I mean
00:53:51It's too early to say it really because it's such a long way to go in this race first grand prix of the year
00:53:55Mechanical woes are always such a strong possibility, but you have to hand it to them
00:54:00You know, they've got this menardie out paul stoddart
00:54:04Got menardie together really just in time at the beginning of last year a bit more investment this year
00:54:09They've got jacques villeneuve behind his 9.3 seconds behind and well, in fact, I remember strangely
00:54:15There's only about three four tenths of a second advantage
00:54:19To villeneuve over mark weber and uh, you know villeneuve
00:54:23He wants to get that final one position one point. It's going to have to do some hard work
00:54:27He is but weber's just taken uh fifth position from david's cool fart
00:54:32And the australian flags are waving around the track and I can't believe that weber knows quite what's going on here
00:54:38Well, what a dream debut for mark weber in his home country
00:54:43in australia, well, he's
00:54:45And also the menardie team if they could just get that one single point
00:54:49They didn't get it last year to get one here would be the most emotional point
00:54:53I think paul stoddart and mark weber will ever ever score on their lives the team owned by uh,
00:55:00Melbourne businessman paul stoddart. They've demean doing all sorts of pr this week. Let's just watch mark weber for a moment
00:55:08They're staying clear the curve's not taking any risks or chances
00:55:12Just clips. It doesn't ride the curve as you've seen others near to the front
00:55:19And there's plenty of delight at the side of him now moving up into fifth position the diggers certainly love mark weber here this afternoon
00:55:27Well, i'm delighted to see him
00:55:29Enjoying this opportunity at the top level of the sport a very professional young man
00:55:33Very serious about his motor racing and very talented as well
00:55:37Now then what's going on here reichmann still putting the pressure on montoya for second as our race leader
00:55:43Michael schumacher now enjoys an advantage of 17 and a half seconds
00:55:49All michael schumacher has to do is just maintain the rhythm he's in it's very comfortable for him he's now
00:55:54Lapping in the high one minute 29s. He's got a rhythm. There's not much traffic on the circuit
00:55:59We've lost so many cars on that first lap
00:56:02So he's not going to find himself being distracted by coming up to slower cars to lap them
00:56:06And sometimes you get those cars in bunches having their own battle that disturbs the driver's rhythm for michael right now
00:56:13Really?
00:56:13He's been here so often for 53 times in his career to date. This could easily be number 54
00:56:20It could well be a start to his chase for a fifth
00:56:24World title and to match that score of juan manuel fangio, it would be a dream start to the season
00:56:30But boy, he's had to fight for it in the early stages of this race
00:56:33Let's just remind you what happened at the beginning of the race a huge accident
00:56:37When ralph schumacher went over the back of paul cedar rubens barrichello
00:56:42And that initiated a massive pile up into the first corner kufar there still struggling around in the mclaren
00:56:49But he's dropping time all
00:56:51The way around the lap but to come back to that accident it took out a huge
00:56:56Number of cars barrichello himself and ralph schumacher, of course
00:56:59Also fissi keller massa heidfeld button pannis and alan mcnish
00:57:05And then we've been seeing some great racing since then and david coolthard has just gone one lap down to race leader
00:57:10Michael schumacher, but the mclaren team have taken the position
00:57:14It's not a terminal problem of the car david coolthard stay out with reliability and attrition
00:57:20We could still be in for a result. We could still get a single point or possibly more. So just keep running
00:57:28Yes, and the team no doubt still working hard to see if they can make a difference from in the pits
00:57:34What's just right on board with?
00:57:36Michael for a moment on the fast section of track through the left hander at 11 and 12 coming up
00:57:43That's on your screen that blue bar that is an indication to the car ahead that
00:57:47There's a car a leading car coming up or a faster car in this case and leading
00:57:52So let him go through and that we think was jack villeneuve. Yep
00:57:55That was jack moving out of the way of the ferrari that's leading this race
00:58:00And michael schumacher now really beginning to dominate proceedings. Watch the rev counter on the left hand side of the picture there
00:58:07And he's going to get it
00:58:09Watch the rev counter on the left hand side of the picture there
00:58:12as the engine revs increase
00:58:15most of these engines revving up to around
00:58:1718 000 revs per minute and producing around about the
00:58:21850 brake horsepower mark at the end of this lap. We will be exactly at half distance of this 58 lap race
00:58:29So clearly the strategy that ferrari were adopting was a single
00:58:33Stop strategy, but still this battle for second placement toya consolidating
00:58:37Raikkonen unable to mount a challenge, of course david cool thought he was catching raikkonen
00:58:42Has got a mechanical problem. That was really I think that what happened to him certainly that second occasion in turn 15
00:58:48It was not a driver error. It was caused by some mechanical malfunction
00:58:51I suspect in the gearbox strategy the hydraulics or something controlling the gear change upshift and downshift
00:58:58On board with kimmy raikkonen now on the bottom part of the circuit through the right hander at turn five
00:59:04Beneath the trees and then up towards turn six and past the marina here through the quick left hander
00:59:11This is a pretty fast right hander louder corner, which builds up the speed as they approach the right left
00:59:18It's a chicane in many ways second gear through the first part about 60 miles an hour building up and they're getting up to about
00:59:25190 miles an hour here. Oh jack villeneuve has gone off a big shunt for jack villeneuve
00:59:30That's in turn 11. Just before you swing back to turn 12
00:59:34Jack villeneuve
00:59:35Heavy shunt front and rear of the car. Certainly the wings are off the car. The wheels are all attached
00:59:39That's still a great sign the double tethers that have been attached to the cars this year. They've been increased in strength
00:59:46Villeneuve steps out of the car. He will be disappointed easy peasy points for bar and their former team boss. Craig pollock
00:59:54The space you've seen that look in his face on many occasions over the last three years. How did he get there from turn 11?
01:00:01Well, presumably it went wrong on the way into the corner, but that's a strange accident indeed
01:00:07And we'll have to wait and see if we've got a replay of that the yellow flags out the rear wing off
01:00:12Let's hope there wasn't a problem. He did suffer a rear wing failure here in the past
01:00:17But I wouldn't well, let's wait and see before we make any verdicts on that
01:00:20Well, you can see the skid marks something suddenly let go. I think if it had been the rear wing
01:00:24It might have been a little bit further than just there, but suddenly he lost control
01:00:30On approach to turn 11 and there you see the skid marks in the track and that's why he went to that unusual position
01:00:35I've never seen a car on that part of the circuit or off that part of the circuit before
01:00:39Michael schumacher won't be too badly affected by this as long as he's aware that the yellow flags are flying
01:00:45He sees those and gets through safely. Let's see what we can spot here
01:00:48Well, we see the car spinning but we don't really get to see if the wing was attached or not
01:00:52It's I don't think it was I think uh, I think that the rear wing was already off the car
01:00:56I think perhaps it did come off
01:00:58Well, it was a repeat of what happened here in the maiden debut of the bar team virtually at the same part of track
01:01:05Well, I don't know where jack will rate that in his thrill
01:01:08levels, but normally he's got a pretty high one and uh
01:01:12Well, he probably said that was about four out of ten I think by his standards
01:01:15Well, he's making his way back he's perfectly all right, but that's the end of bar's team now
01:01:20We've lost a complete team there as well because olivier panis was involved in the first corner accident and now
01:01:25Villeneuve goes out with what looks to us like a suspected
01:01:29Also allows eddie irvine time to breathe because he's got mark weber behind him at mark weber's 22.7
01:01:36Seconds away and not likely to threaten eddie irvine and jaguar and I mean eddie's such a good race driver
01:01:43He now knows what his job is that is to bring jaguar home and maximize the points opportunity
01:01:50And you never know he could even have a podium. I mean, it's unbelievable to think starting 19th
01:01:55You could actually get a podium. It is amazing to think that let's say in modern times ben
01:02:00Yes in modern times, but I mean we might expect a number of retirements in the first grand prix of the year
01:02:05I don't think we expected to see quite so many cars go out but not through mechanical retirements this time through accident damage and being off
01:02:12The track as a result of that first corner accident
01:02:16Right at the start of things. Well, mark weber still going
01:02:21Michael schumacher for some unexplained reason had a relatively slow lap by his standards
01:02:28That's mark weber
01:02:29There seems to be a little bit of concern there from paul stoddart
01:02:32Although he looks as though he is
01:02:33At speed looks all right through that section of the track just seemed to be a bit of tension to me
01:02:37On that pit wall for minardi, so perhaps keep a close eye on the progress of this car
01:02:43Another yellow flag situation. Well, that's really still waiting for villeneuve for the wing to be cleared away. That's out at the entry to turn 11
01:02:52so still a localized yellow flag at that part of track and it's
01:02:56Incumbent upon drivers to slow down now, that's a relative term slow down. No one's ever defined it precisely
01:03:02But I tell you what if you don't slow down enough, you will know all about it because you'll be brought in and penalized
01:03:06Yes, they'll watch those sector times and if you've put in your personal best time of the race so far in the yellow they will not
01:03:12take
01:03:13That too kindly and they'll give you a penalty as a result our top three as you can see
01:03:18From the graphics schumacher now 19.4 seconds ahead of montoya
01:03:22But montoya still has that mclaren mercedes of kimi yoraikanen breathing down his neck
01:03:28The gap's been hovering around the second barrier 1.1 at the minute
01:03:32And it does look as though everybody going for that single stop
01:03:36We've seen that in recent years here in melbourne
01:03:38Most people going for the one stop and quite often going quite a long way beyond the half distance point
01:03:44We're coming up to that half distance point soon
01:03:46Now you may well see the cars go quite a long way beyond that before they make their stop
01:03:50Well, it's interesting that the mathematics say the two-stop strategy is the quicker strategy
01:03:56But that's only if you're on the racetrack by yourself
01:03:58It doesn't take into account the 21 other cars that ought to be on the racetrack as well
01:04:03Sadly here today. We've lost a lot of cars in that early on that first lap shunt on the first corner
01:04:08but other cars have fallen by the wayside for reasons of
01:04:11Irregularity frentzen going through the red light but noly jumping into the spare car after the race had commenced. So
01:04:18A lot of errors and a lot of rule books needing researching and rethinking
01:04:22but michael schumacher now into the one minute 28.6 the lap that he suddenly lost time on I suspect was because
01:04:29He did the honorable thing when he saw the yellow lights and yellow flags
01:04:31He actually did slow down to be sure there wasn't something of danger above and beyond what most racing drivers interpret a yellow lighter flag
01:04:39to mean
01:04:40He's getting perilously close to breaking his own lap record. It's a 128.214 from last year
01:04:46He's about four tenths of a second off his existing lap record
01:04:50And I think that will certainly be gone before the end of this race
01:04:54Meanwhile montoya has a 2.3 second advantage over kimmy reichanen. Yeah, that's stretched by well 1.2 seconds on the previous lap
01:05:03Reichen and dropped back now may have been a little error
01:05:05We haven't had a chance to see or maybe he's now beginning to suffer a mechanical problem such as his afflicted david koulthard
01:05:13He's certainly sliding quite a lot through that final right hander coming around past the marina the bm williams team looking
01:05:21Very relaxed and again and the same part of the circuit as well
01:05:25Yeah, but it's got it has to be a problem up at that part of the track
01:05:28There's no way that david would be going off making mistake like that and we've seen him struggling around the last two laps
01:05:34He's still running in seventh place
01:05:36And de la rosa is still running. He's down in ninth position
01:05:40But because so few cars are running they're all deciding to stay out there no matter how sick they are
01:05:45And nikka salo, he's a lap down, but he's about to pass david koulthard to take seventh place away from the scotsman
01:05:52and then he's got
01:05:53Young alex young ahead of him. So it'll be
01:05:56Toyota, of course
01:05:58laying up
01:05:59For their single stop of the day and the focus of toyota will be to try and run down alex young again
01:06:04You see the mclaren just seemingly being pushed forward now whether that's a throttle problem or whether it's a gear change problem
01:06:11We'll only know after the race, but three times now in this race. David koulthard has been off at turn 15
01:06:18Ah turned into a terribly disappointing day for david koulthard. It started so well
01:06:23He got up in front at that initial start and opened up such a big advantage
01:06:27but it's all gone wrong for him really since
01:06:30That safety car closed up the gap and then on the restart that problem
01:06:35Started and it sent him off onto the grass
01:06:37Now we saw the toyota team getting ready for mika salo to be coming in new experience for toyota
01:06:42John, they've got to get used to the heat of competition making pit stops in the middle of a grand prix
01:06:47They've done it in sports car racing. They've done le mans. They've done all sorts of sports car racing all around the world
01:06:53There is pressure on that but doing it in a formula one grand prix. It is a choreographed ballet
01:06:58That's how I think about it
01:06:59You've got about 20 people all interacting all having to have a sixth sense
01:07:04Knowing what their teammates are going to do and if one gets it wrong, then the whole process just crumbles
01:07:10Well, we'll see how they get on in a minute. Montoya is coming up to lap mark weber here and that shouldn't
01:07:17Cause too much of a problem, but he's got to be aware of reichen and behind here come
01:07:21The toyota's first stop then mika salo into the pits three guys on each corner as the fuel goes on
01:07:2712 and a half liters per second flowing into the tank salo does a good job professional job from the team and away he goes
01:07:34Well just worried about mika salo. I'm sorry mark weber. He's gone past I suspect more than three blue flags
01:07:41And he might have to get a little silver
01:07:43Talking to maybe a quick little pit stop 10 second stop good penalty
01:07:48When he saw that blue flag
01:07:49He should recognize the car behind him is a car in second or certainly in a leading car
01:07:55And at the earliest convenience let him go through and I think maybe mark weber didn't do that as well as he could have done
01:08:01There were opportunities into 14 and 15 to let montoya go through
01:08:06Schumacher continues on his untroubled way hasn't stopped as yet
01:08:10Just going past eddie irvine there lapping irvine
01:08:13But irvine still going in fourth position and looking to gain some points for jaguar
01:08:19What a relief that would be to them kimmy reichen and meanwhile
01:08:22Laps mark weber the gap between montoya and reichen and 2.4 seconds last time around
01:08:32Seems to have things under control, but whatever lost him that initial time from montoya
01:08:37He doesn't seem to be able to put a quick lap in again to regain it
01:08:40Then it's the first time kimmy reichen and has been in the position to challenge for a top three position on merit
01:08:46And I just wonder is he just realizing that suddenly when you're in a leading team like mclaren mercedes-benz
01:08:51Is there something?
01:08:52Additional to just being a grand prix driver when you're doing in a team like cyber, which is not considered a front-running team
01:08:58Whatever you do is a bonus now. There's the expectation and I just wonder is it just maybe he's been finding it himself
01:09:04This is a little bit tougher than I imagined
01:09:07Well as we've seen often the second year is the tough year no matter how talented you are
01:09:12And that's what reichen and is going to have to deal with but he's on target here today for his first ever podium finish
01:09:17And I think that actually both he and the team would be delighted with that
01:09:20Let's just sit back a moment and watch michael schumacher at work
01:09:31Oh and david is struggling struggling with this car and it looks as though it might actually all be over this time
01:09:38Yes, david. Coulthard is going to pull off track down at turn four
01:09:42The yellow flags are right as we wait to see one of the two nardis make their pit stop
01:09:47Yeah, they are both running
01:09:48They're one of the few teams that have got both their cars still running you can see
01:09:52They're at turn number three as well turn four really that
01:09:55David has come to a stop
01:09:58Alex young though and mark weber still both running for minardi
01:10:01In fact, they're both in possible point scoring positions. You'd have thought david could have pulled the car off
01:10:06Rather than doing that. I mean having the track marshals go out on track. It is a yellow flag zone
01:10:12So the car now getting pushed to safety
01:10:14I suppose possibly with so few cars in the track. It maybe mightn't have been such a big issue
01:10:18But you know, I hate seeing a car
01:10:21Static on a racetrack when there's an active circuit in use
01:10:2536 laps have been completed then and here comes michael schumacher. He'll just about to be going past that stricken
01:10:32mclaren of david coulthard
01:10:35And there it is just to the left from that onboard camera. Irvine comes through safely as well
01:10:41But it is all over for the scotsman and that is a great shame
01:10:48And david is putting the steering wheel back on that is also a finable offense if you don't do so but now
01:10:53The williams team getting into the pit lane as we see mark weber come in for his one and only stop of the day
01:11:01Well, let's hope that they get this under control mark certainly doing a good job of stopping it in the right place
01:11:07There is a little bit of a delay though here john something has gone wrong. I think it's
01:11:12Well, I can't quite see what the problem is. I think it's with the fuel flap or something like that
01:11:17A very strange looking problem everyone looking very concerned trying to sort it out
01:11:24The fuel is going on board now, I think
01:11:27They've got it cleanly done and eventually mark's able to get away. Is he? Yes, he is. Oh, dear. Oh, dear
01:11:34That was uh, not what he needed at all and poor mark weber losing a huge amount of time
01:11:41In the pit lane
01:11:42And in the pit lane now is also jack villeneuve
01:11:45He's been talking to the reporters and did confirm ben as you suspected correctly that there was a rear wing failure
01:11:51The wing came off that threw jack villeneuve into that spin and harmlessly
01:11:56Came to a halt and uh, you know jack takes it very much in his stride. He's been there before hasn't he?
01:12:01He has been there before but uh, you know, it shouldn't happen somebody coming into the pits there
01:12:05But ben just while we're talking reichen and has done the quickest time one above montoya
01:12:11But reichen and suddenly is the quickest lap of the day one 28 5 4 1 suddenly
01:12:16Somebody's knocked him on the head and said sunshine wake up
01:12:18You've got a job to do now montoya got very sideways coming into the pits in his uh,
01:12:23Anxiety to be as quick as possible a good stop 10.1 seconds and montoya is on his way
01:12:29Fresh tires enough fuel for race distance. Remember to stay
01:12:33To the right of that don't cross that line because that'll be again an offense
01:12:38But I don't know what's kimmy reichen and suddenly done
01:12:41To 84 liters put in and uh fueled for 20 laps
01:12:45Well that should give him just the right amount of fuel to get to the end of this 58 lap
01:12:50Event and they'll be keeping a close eye on that fuel consumption
01:12:53It's ferrari that will be watching now 28 5 4 1 as you said for kimmy reichen
01:12:57And great lap from the mclaren driver. Why why suddenly?
01:13:01Do a lot like that as michael schumacher now makes his one and only
01:13:05Oops, i was going to say trip onto the grass trip into the pit lane
01:13:09Michael practices this all the time
01:13:11He maximizes and the mclaren also now laying out for kimmy reichen and but michael schumacher through practice particularly
01:13:18Maximizes every fraction of a second on the entry into a circuit into the pit lane
01:13:23Into the pit lane, you can't do anything until you get to the pit lane exit before you get back on the throttle
01:13:2810.1 seconds was the time for montoya. Let's see ferrari
01:13:31Notoriously quick in the pit lane
01:13:34And under no pressure really are they away they go 10.5 seconds four tenths doesn't really matter
01:13:40Kimmy reichen and now he makes his way down. You just I mean somebody's going to say someday that is not kimmy reichen and
01:13:46so like
01:13:48It is so like mika hakkinen it is uh
01:13:51Amazing to watch the transformation the results so far from the front brakes blue smoke coming off the front brakes
01:13:5610.3. Well 10.6. There's slight hesitation just as the car came off the jacks eddie irvine makes his way out as well
01:14:03Now where is montoya? There is montoya and this could be a change but montoya with tires warmed up and reichen has gone wide
01:14:10He's lasted. Oh dear. Oh, dear. He was aware. I'm sure that montoya was coming
01:14:15He was aware and I was aware as well
01:14:17And I knew that he was on the wrong part of the track to try and take the corner
01:14:21At the speed he was carrying the inside of the track, of course still dirty and green
01:14:24Montoya on the right hand side on the left hand side of the track
01:14:28On the cracing line and he had the advantage. Kimmy made a fundamental error. So he'll learn
01:14:33I don't think you see him make that one again in the future, but that's all
01:14:37Very wide in the exit of five. Hey, look watch and see what happens
01:14:40He's got too much speed the back end under braking slips away
01:14:43He's got no choice, but to go across the grass and he just thinks oh
01:14:48I had it. I had second place and i've just blown it
01:14:51I don't think he really had it though
01:14:53He didn't have quite enough of an edge over montoya
01:14:55Even if he'd made it through one and two, I think the momentum would have carried montoya
01:14:58Believe me the ice man would have made life difficult for one pablo montoya
01:15:04No, this is alex young, isn't it? His teammate now coming into the pits the malaysian
01:15:08Driver and uh, well, he's doing a good job so far. He finished one of the three races. He entered last year
01:15:15That was down in 16th
01:15:17alex
01:15:21Sounded like he wasn't in first gear getting away there
01:15:30Unbelievable both monardis in the points fifth and sixth if they retain those two positions they'll walk away from here with three points
01:15:38three points and how valuable is that john in terms we never know how all the finances of formula one work in detail, but
01:15:45That's going to be very valuable indeed to a small team
01:15:48I guarantee you one thing paul stoddard on the pit lane is working it out right now
01:15:52I'm sure he is
01:15:53He's got his calculator down there and it'll make a huge difference
01:15:56To a small team like that to score points at the start of the season
01:16:00But here's the man who we've got so used to scoring maximum points time after time after time
01:16:0653 wins to his credit already breaking records every season now and looking to start this season
01:16:14in the best possible way
01:16:16Montoya putting another lap on mika salo behind mark weber. So that battle between weber salo
01:16:23Currently in seventh place. He's two laps down weber in fifth place one lap done
01:16:28You know weber lost all that time in the pits john, but it he has maintained that fifth position
01:16:32So that's good news for him because he was sitting in that pit lane for a long long time
01:16:36Yes, he was but also he's 22 seconds ahead of his teammate
01:16:40Alex young so there isn't going to be any pressure, but it's kimmy reichanan
01:16:43Comes up and passes mark weber this time weber backs off. Let's reichanan go through
01:16:49There is a rule that if you go past three blue flag stations, you will be brought in
01:16:55weber in his first ever grand prix perhaps
01:16:59Feeling the strain at some point as we go through the latter stages of this race
01:17:03But of course mark did an awful lot of testing for benetton last year, didn't he?
01:17:07John and I don't think that he's really going to be in any difficulty fitness wise in this race
01:17:12No, and he's been through a very extreme fitness training course
01:17:16over the winter time with
01:17:18In fact because he was with benetton knee reno today. He's had use of the facilities at endstone
01:17:23So he's had pretty scientific physical training and uh, well
01:17:27He rode from john o'groats to lanzen and a bicycle didn't quite do it in a day
01:17:31It took him 10 days, but nonetheless a pretty fine achievement and it was done for charity as well
01:17:35Oh, that's great news. Uh, paul stod up there keeping an eye on the progress of his two cars
01:17:41And uh, well, it's the only team boss who's got two cars still running in this race. It's quite an achievement
01:17:47But ben let's get into the realms of speculation because kimmy reichanan remember made a pit stop
01:17:52Early at the end of the first lap because he had a damaged nose
01:17:55What would have happened if reichanan hadn't had that damaged nose?
01:17:59Would he be ahead of montoya or would the situation still essentially remain the same?
01:18:03Yeah, it's a good point john. Uh, he was involved with a little bit of damage in that
01:18:07First a lap accident and it could have been a different story
01:18:10Well, that's as much emotion you're going to see in ron dennis's face as david coolthard
01:18:14Explains what went wrong the first one where he locked a brake I have to think was down to the driver
01:18:19But the remaining two I would say were purely mechanically
01:18:23responsible
01:18:24on board with uh, kimmy here
01:18:27And things seem to be going well for him at the moment
01:18:29And of course we saw that fastest lap from uh, kimmy reichanan just before the pit stop. Well that has uh,
01:18:36That has been eclipsed slightly now, but a very impressive lap
01:18:40It was the question is of course, can he maintain that sort of pace throughout a race?
01:18:44That's what michael schumacher always does. Yes. It is and it's that consistency that has enabled schumacher to be
01:18:50Statistically the most successful driver in formula one history and could go on to be considered the greatest ever
01:18:57And if he keeps winning races and winning championships who's to deny him that title? Yeah
01:19:02Well, that's the big question you have to say that on today's performances
01:19:07It looks like ferrari do have the edge over williams bmw certainly here in melbourne
01:19:12It may be a different story elsewhere and reichanan getting so wide coming out of turn five that curb
01:19:19If you drop a wheel off it onto the grass
01:19:21You will turn sharp right and that'll be the end of your race and you'll probably have a pair of sore knees as well
01:19:26There's montoya just lapping. Irvine montoya still running in second place
01:19:30Remember and the gap between our top two michael schumacher and montoya up to 24.7
01:19:36Seconds and then the gap between montoya and reichanan as you can see on the split 3.3
01:19:42Ben, let's think back when we saw reichanan, you know come into the pitch
01:19:45There was something about the seat belts. There was something bothering him
01:19:49I wonder whatever that problem is was it not rectified and in fact
01:19:53Is that what's causing him problems such as maybe his seat belts are not as tightly secured as they need to be
01:19:58Maybe he's not
01:20:00As comfortable in the seat there's something certainly enabled him to do one very quick lap
01:20:04But he hasn't been able to push as hard consistently to match that one very fast lap. Well, see the correction mid-corner there
01:20:12There's great view from the onboard camera. He's on the start finish straight
01:20:15If you're wondering whereabouts in the track, he is let's watch him through the first two corners
01:20:19So
01:20:28Quick glance in the mirror as he heads down towards turn three
01:20:31And that's nearly 180 miles an hour before he gets on the brakes very late to turn into turn three
01:20:36the sound of that mercedes v10 engine
01:20:39working
01:20:40very hard indeed
01:20:43The automatic gearbox those crisp gear changes up and down through the box
01:20:47Sign the sight and the sound of formula one
01:20:51Our lady ervine makes his way around he's one lap down, but he must be a happy man as well
01:20:57The thought of three points in his first grand prix in a car which couldn't qualify higher than 19th will bring some
01:21:05Compensation to the hard work everybody in jaguar and those guys have been on their knees trying to get a car
01:21:11Just to be in a grand prix let alone to be competitive alex young gets all wrong down at turn three
01:21:17But he gets away with it. That's good news stays in the points. The two minorities are still there for the moment
01:21:23He's dropped out micasalo has now taken that
01:21:27sixth place away from alex young
01:21:31Now that means that toyota now possibly with a chance of scoring points on their debut now that would be
01:21:37One big story indeed micasalo the remaining toyota driver in this race toyota spending all of last year testing
01:21:45Micasalo and alan mcnish doing lots of hard work thousands of kilometers of testing
01:21:51And now salo's got the car up into sixth position
01:21:53Well, I think it's very worrying for everybody in formula one that toyota can come in
01:21:57They've done it in a low-key manner, but they can run relatively competitively. We've seen reliability very strong reliability
01:22:05From the toyota team and if this is what they're doing at the beginning of their formula one
01:22:09Term well, you know give them time. They're going to be challenging these people ferrari
01:22:15Give it three years watch and see well
01:22:18It'll be fascinating to watch the progress of toyota run by ove anderson
01:22:22And of course like ferrari they not only build the engine they build the chassis
01:22:27They do the whole thing at their base in cologne
01:22:30They're not in the uk which is often thought to be the center of race car manufacturing
01:22:35It is the center of race car manufacturing, but they've decided to make their base in cologne and toyota trying to take on
01:22:42Ferrari at their own game building the whole
01:22:46car all the equipment and going racing I think one of the reasons they chose not to come to the uk is because
01:22:51there is a sort of a little cartel of
01:22:54Formula one teams in the united kingdom based around the thames valley and mclaren, of course down in woking and seri
01:22:59And they wanted to build a team that was not going to have people sort of flitting from team to team to team to team
01:23:06They chose to do something quite different some drivers criticize them for doing it
01:23:10Well, that's the sort of decision that they make they have not made a mistake in doing so
01:23:15They've got a fine team of engineers mechanics
01:23:18And the driver's not doing a bad job either
01:23:19No, mikasalo is the driver and of course he has plenty of grand prix experience. He didn't race during the
01:23:262001 season as he spent that time testing for toyota, but he made his debut by way back in
01:23:341994 at suzuka driving for lotus and then went on to race for the tirrell team for several seasons raced with arrows
01:23:41With bar stood in at ferrari for a few races in 1999 and then drove for the sauber team
01:23:48In 2000 lots of experience for mikasalo, but let's just put this into perspective
01:23:53Mikasalo lapping one minute 35 zero
01:23:56Michael schumacher lapping in one 30.3
01:24:014.7 seconds
01:24:03And that is a bunch of time it is indeed over anderson was the man in the middle there the boss of the toyota outfit
01:24:11Comes from the world of rallying and ran the very successful toyota rally team now running formula one as eddie irvine makes his pit stop
01:24:19Three pedro de la rosa de la rosa coming. Yes. Sorry. Yes. He's in for his second pit stop
01:24:26So whether it was a problem or whether it was a strategy
01:24:29Jaguar may well have chosen to do something a little bit different because when you're so far down the grid
01:24:33You might as well have a go. It's the only way you're going to get up through the field
01:24:37But of course with what took place on the opening lap that whole strategy was completely thrown out the door
01:24:41I have to say I have to apologize to jaguar because uh
01:24:45I've been saying that minardi is the only one's running two cars. Of course de la rosa is still going he's been struggling
01:24:49They have got a problem with that car, but they still got the two jags out there. They are both still running
01:24:54He's down in eighth position, so my apologies to jaguar you've got your two cars there just like minardi
01:25:00Yes, unfortunately for pedro. He's five laps down
01:25:04And he's two laps down alex young who's in seventh place. So
01:25:08Pedro de la rosa he's staying out. You never know what happens. It can be last minute reliability problems driver fatigue driver errors
01:25:15You've got to say if you can hang in
01:25:17Do so because you still can pick up points and these flyaway races the ones that are outside of the european continent
01:25:23Are always and in the early season ones particularly
01:25:26Though their points are up for grabs once you get into europe people get into the rhythm and stride
01:25:31It becomes very difficult to beat the top three teams to get any points at all
01:25:36John, look the sun's coming out at last, you know, the colors change completely here in australia
01:25:41It's so fantastic to see this is more like it. This is the melbourne
01:25:45We know and love the sunshine the colors the heat haze are really beginning to show
01:25:50That's what we're used to and it's great to see it now
01:25:53Well, there are 12 laps to go. Michael schumacher
01:25:57Having completed 46 starting his 47th lap
01:26:03Ferrari team keeping a close eye on those monitors a whole bank of monitors to keep an eye on times on track position
01:26:09And of course back in the garage a host of computers as well to monitor everything that's going on
01:26:15In the car in the engine in the systems that are now such an important part
01:26:20Of the performance of a modern formula one car our second place man is juan pablo montoya just going through the picture third
01:26:26There he is. Kimi raikkonen certainly stepping into mika hakuna's shoes. Well, and that was well
01:26:32I don't think mika hakuna would have done that with 12 laps to go
01:26:35I have to say kimi raikkonen is running at this point in this last lap
01:26:39About 0.7 to 0.8 of a second quicker than one pablo montoya
01:26:44Montoya's had a little bit of a dream and a bit of a sleep 31.7 the last lap montoya 30.652
01:26:51For raikkonen so raikkonen again on a charge and I just wonder whether it is to do that
01:26:57Situation we saw with the seat belt something in the car. He was uncomfortable with maybe it is fatigue a combination of factors
01:27:03Maybe it's just something with the car temperature related. Let's take a look at this was where he made a mistake just now
01:27:08Yeah, he came into the corner over around the corner had to correct got it all sorted out
01:27:13The guy's got reactions. Look at that
01:27:15He doesn't mind letting the back of the car drift around a lot of drivers are uncomfortable with that
01:27:20Like all fins i've seen in the racetrack. They like a car that is quite easy loose in the rear and they
01:27:27Only want the front to be stuck. They'll deal with the back their own way. Yeah, certainly
01:27:31great reactions great car control from kimi raikkonen and
01:27:36Maintaining the honor of finnish drivers in formula one
01:27:39The other fin in this race with plenty more experience than raikkonen i'm driving for the toyota team
01:27:45But raikkonen let's watch this next lap the gap between montoya and kimi 4.8
01:27:51Seconds last time around but montoya's put in a better lap this time picked up the pace 30.9
01:27:56Raikkonen 32 points so lost a bunch of time because of that error in turn one all that hard work to claw back
01:28:03Half a second here point two there. It's all been blown by just being over exuberant into turn one
01:28:08Can you blame him? He's only a kid exactly exactly. He's only just starting his second season of formula one racing
01:28:15And he's only 22 years old and there's a lot and long career ahead of him
01:28:22Taking a look here and mark weber still running in fifth position in the minardi possible two points
01:28:28To him on his debut. Well, mark weber is not running very quickly. That was a 137.4
01:28:34Micah salo who's 16.3 seconds behind him
01:28:37Took well four seconds on that last lap out salo's picked up his pace
01:28:42He's going for the challenge to mark weber for fifth place and at the pace that he's running down mark weber
01:28:48There are stacks of laps. We've got 11 laps of this race remaining
01:28:53So mark weber under pressure
01:28:55Well, that's going to make a salo
01:28:57Yeah, that's going to give us something to watch over the remaining 10 laps
01:29:00Of this race and the fans will be on the edge of their seats as they will mark weber through to the chequered flag
01:29:08Still some 30 miles to go and you never know what's going to happen
01:29:12He's pushing harder though
01:29:13So the message is getting through you can see the back end of the car moving around as mark determined to maintain the gap over mica salo
01:29:21But it is soul destroying he'll come past and see
01:29:24The the times he gets on his board this time will be the times from his previous time through
01:29:29If he's picked up the pace, we'll have a look and see it was a 37
01:29:32For his last lap 35 one. He's picked up over two seconds
01:29:36That's enough to stall mica salo who was running in the 135s himself
01:29:43Following him across the line there
01:29:45But in fact ahead of him on the road is eddie irvine running in fourth position
01:29:50He's a lap down on race leader. Michael schumacher
01:29:53But he's keeping it all together making no mistakes all under control for eddie irvine
01:29:59And this would be such a boost to the team
01:30:02The last good result that eddie had was that third place in monaco last year. That was a tremendous result
01:30:08fourth position here today after the
01:30:11Difficulties they've had over the winter the testing performances which have been so disappointing
01:30:16Will be such a boost to the team and to the men at cosworth the men and women at cosworth who've put so much
01:30:21Effort into this engine. Well, I think this is certainly a reward for their mind of hard work that has gone in
01:30:28To the jaguar team based in milton keynes and I mean they produce this car
01:30:32This is meant to be their definitive car that the r2 last year's car was overweight too high c of g things like that
01:30:39And then when they take it on the racetrack, they find it's little more than a dog
01:30:43So real new suspension components new uprights hubs. They've not done the work on the aerodynamics that they would like to do
01:30:49they know the car is
01:30:51Seriously lacking aerodynamically, but they've got this new wind tunnel facility in bister in oxfordshire coming on stream
01:30:58Very shortly indeed and they just need to get in there like about a month ago. Yeah
01:31:02yeah, they had such a hard time trying to develop the
01:31:07All the aerodynamics in the californian wind tunnel and now at least they'll have an opportunity
01:31:14to do their own wind tunnel testing and sort out the handling of this car and
01:31:18Dave stubbs on the right with nikki lauda on the left the man who's now in charge of everything at jaguar
01:31:25And keeping fingers and just about everything crossed I should think
01:31:28Well, certainly nikki
01:31:30Will come away from here with the result how he's achieved it is irrelevant. The fact is the car is running
01:31:35It's in the points and one man whose sister got news again from the pits who's been
01:31:41Probably the saddest man here this afternoon of outside of rubens barrichello
01:31:45Is david coulthard and basically what he has said is that it has been a software problem that's affected him and uh,
01:31:52It's this one is not down to david. It's down to
01:31:54to the electronics on the car, well a great shame for david coulthard and
01:31:59certainly
01:32:00With the number of times that he was struggling to get through that turn 15
01:32:05It became apparent it was some sort of mechanical problem and david out of the race disappointing start to the season for him
01:32:12and particularly with
01:32:14Kimi raikkonen in shape here to get a very very good third position on his first race for the team
01:32:20But ben another guy another guy. Mikasalo really has gotten a wake-up call from the toyota team
01:32:27132.8 in response to mark weber's 135 that gap is now down to 12.1 seconds
01:32:33There's mark weber coming through turn 15 into turn 16
01:32:36We'll wait and see what that gap is at the end of this lap mark weber's last lap 35.3
01:32:42He needs to maintain or improve upon that
01:32:46Mark, weber 35.5
01:32:48Gone slower by 0.3 of a second. Mikasalo will be coming through very shortly. We'll see what his times are
01:32:549.4 seconds salo 32.9 toyota really want fifth place
01:32:59They do and he gained nearly three seconds on this man mark weber on that last lap
01:33:04So mikasala is closing closing closing
01:33:07There is the gap as they went across start finish line 9.4 seconds and gives you the distance as well
01:33:13542 meters they'll be coming up to another checkpoint in a moment and we'll get another look at that gap
01:33:21Well, that's eddie. Irvine but coming just out of turn five. We're ready to see mikasalo
01:33:26Here he is into turn six
01:33:28And with the number of laps four laps remaining it is not going to be
01:33:31A particular problem i'm sure for solo to catch up and I don't think even overtaking
01:33:36I think the speed that salo is now carrying will be more than sufficient to see his way past mark weber in his debut grand prix
01:33:44seven laps to go mikasala closing on
01:33:47Mark, weber and toyota looking nervous as they wait to see if their man can really close up that gap
01:33:57Tremendous debut, isn't it?
01:33:59Yes, it is nothing like the sniff of another place towards the end of a race to give a driver that additional
01:34:03Inspiration you can at times
01:34:06Not only the driver doesn't do it consciously
01:34:08But you can sort of get into a a rut or we call it going to sleep in the trade
01:34:13And maybe mikasalo got the message from the pits
01:34:16Maybe mark weber has got a problem mark is pushing as hard as he can in his minority
01:34:21Mikasalo has discovered that he's got more pace in himself, but he's got the motivation to do it
01:34:26That's what marks out drivers like michael schumacher. They've got that motivation
01:34:30100 percent of the time across the line 6.9 seconds the gap between them it is closing so so rapidly and
01:34:38Salo is flying in the toyota a car that had its aerodynamics developed largely at the lola wind tunnel in the uk
01:34:46So although as we said, they're based in cologne still some involvement from the british racing car industry in that toyota
01:34:54Car and gustav brunner the designer and he'll be very happy but hoping that the reliability holds out as well
01:35:00here's our race leader michael schumacher, it's been
01:35:04A very eventful start to the grand prix for him
01:35:07It was an exciting battle that he had with juan pablo montoya
01:35:10But ever since he got past montoya john it's been a cruise in the park
01:35:14Well, it has been a cruise in the park without doubt
01:35:16But what has been I thought outstanding was the the racing the way the front runners went out. I mean that was proper
01:35:23Motor racing. It was fantastic. I mean there was no quarter given and you've seen drivers like montoya coolthard
01:35:28Michael schumacher kimi raikkonen they're getting stuck in they're not out here just to put on a show
01:35:34They're out here to fight to win and it has been absolutely brilliant
01:35:39well the
01:35:40Action that we saw in the early stages of this race. I think people will be talking about for
01:35:45Many grand prixs to come and uh, it has started off the season in fine style the battle between michael schumacher and juan
01:35:52Pablo montoya, hopefully will be a battle that goes throughout the season mark weber
01:35:58Micah salo the second of those cars gap down to 5.1 seconds. Salo's got to get a lap or past
01:36:05Eddie irvine. Irvine is a lap ahead of salo. Now. I hope that jaguar bits of paper. I think debris in the circuit
01:36:11I hope the jaguar
01:36:13Make irvine aware that salo is not a challenge for a position and let him go
01:36:16He's involved in a private battle with this man mark weber for that fifth place
01:36:21Yes, I expect he'll be made aware of that
01:36:22Of course salo and irvine makes from the old days racing in japan
01:36:27The two of them had a very successful time in their earlier days racing in japanese single-seater
01:36:33Series before getting the break to move up into formula one
01:36:36That's salo being watched closely by his teammate alan mcnish
01:36:40Who so sadly was one of those punted out in the first corner accident?
01:36:44And alan such a part of the team involved in all the testing egging his teammate on and micah salo
01:36:50On lap 54 has produced his quickest first sector time of the race. He's produced his
01:36:56Quickest time in the second sector on lap 54. He is absolutely
01:37:01Focused not on the back of the jaguar. He's not concerned about eddie irvine. He's after mark weber and he is hunting him down ruthlessly
01:37:09Weber we saw pushing very hard a moment ago, but he's got to play this carefully
01:37:14Yes, he's got to push to try and try and stay ahead of salo
01:37:18But just the one point would still be so important to minardi
01:37:22He can't afford to throw it off the island now in his attempts to keep salo behind
01:37:26So really it's down to eddie irvine
01:37:28Is he going to make room let salo go past as they come down into turn one or is he going to?
01:37:32Slow down the momentum of mika salo and it looks like eddie irvine
01:37:36Oh, I don't mind something to do with me. You get past me if you're quick enough
01:37:39But I hope everyone lets him go through down into turn three. Yes. He is. He's slowed back back off
01:37:44I suspect salo will just slip down the inside. Oh eddie. Come on get out of the way
01:37:49Well, he hasn't slowed down enough and salo hasn't found a way past yet
01:37:53And this is going to hurt him now 53 laps have been completed out of 58 five laps to go
01:37:58There should be a blue flag out irvine. You're not doing anybody any favors here to let salo go through you're in fourth place
01:38:05You've got your three points
01:38:07He can't maintain his momentum if he can't get to that level
01:38:11That's right. It seems a little strange perhaps now the opportunity for salo to get up the inside. Yes
01:38:16He does that cleanly and safely
01:38:18And
01:38:19Gets a round of applause from the toyota pit, but is there time now to still close the gap?
01:38:23You know salo was the man that gifted a victory at hockenheim to eddie irvine in 99
01:38:28I thought eddie might have paid back that that compliment a little bit more quickly than he did
01:38:33Salo with a bit more work to do then 4.2 seconds definitely losing some time behind eddie irvine
01:38:39So he's got to push hard now to try and gain that little bit through each and every corner
01:38:44You can see how hard mika salo is trying the car twitching around as he gets on the power
01:38:49And now we look back from mark weber's car the blue smoke off that tire. He got heat
01:38:54There's no traction control working in this minority. He lit up that rear. Well, that's the left rear tire right as we're looking at on camera
01:39:01And now he can begin to see mika salo in the mirrors the clock ticks away the gap just 3.8
01:39:07seconds 54 laps out of 58 completed and mika salo under braking into turn one
01:39:13You could see the plumes of carbon dust coming out from within the wheel rim. Just suddenly on the brakes brakes being over
01:39:21Mark, wherever you've last time
01:39:23Big mistake there down at turn three very wide indeed
01:39:28Right off the throttle and that's going to help salo close up some more michael schumacher
01:39:32Meanwhile is heading for yet another win to add to his tally. It will be win number 54
01:39:39He's already broken the record for numbers of victories in grand prix racing
01:39:44He's going to add to his tally once again here this afternoon and juan pablo montoya in second place some 26.8 seconds behind
01:39:51Think back to the earliest stages of this race
01:39:54They were battling for the lead kimmy reichardt and in third place a further 4.8 seconds behind montoya
01:40:00So the top three is settled results. It's only through unreliability or something unforeseen that we'd expect any change
01:40:08So for michael schumacher, it's a normal day at the office once again
01:40:13The highest paid the most highly respected racing driver in formula one
01:40:17Four times he's won the world championship and he's chasing that fifth title this year
01:40:22What a perfect start to the season for him ten points on offer
01:40:27If he can just make it through the next two and a half laps and he's been grumpy pretty much all weekend
01:40:31I've never seen him look so
01:40:33You know that chin jutting out touch of the bruce fourth size about him
01:40:37But when he gets out of the car, you'll see the jump the smile will be back
01:40:40He will be one very very happy world champion, but look at salo
01:40:44He has caught up to the back of mark weber now
01:40:47This is the battle for fifth position as the toyota of mika salo on its debut
01:40:54Now looking to try and take two points away from australia and forget about the melbourne cup the famous horse race that takes place
01:41:00in melbourne in november, this is
01:41:03Focusing the attention of the entire continent of australia mark weber fighting for fifth place in his first world championship grand prix
01:41:11Against mika salo and the toyota who's been taking lumps out of his lead or his position over the last 10 laps
01:41:17Gustav brunner watching nervously from the pits to see whether his baby
01:41:21His design is going to be able to get past the minardi
01:41:26Well
01:41:28He's going to have to do it pretty soon
01:41:32And it looks as though that opportunity could come after this now
01:41:34John, you were talking about the next corner coming up is a possible overtaking place
01:41:38Yes, I mean he couldn't get in inside him into turn 11. It's not a possible place to pass
01:41:44He's not close enough here coming into turn 13. All he can do is position himself. It's too risky into 14
01:41:49He's having a look. He's just distracting mark weber prepare to do your overtake as you exit out of 16
01:41:56Going across the start finish line for one more lap into turn one, but this will be the last lap
01:42:02Coming around lap. I should say coming around to complete lap number 57 these two
01:42:09Across the line they go and here comes mika salo. Is he going to make a move?
01:42:14No, he's not not into turn number one. Next chance is turn three good exit from both drivers both doing a great job
01:42:22Salo, I think has got the slight momentum
01:42:24But again, the distance between the corner and where they are is so short salo doing what montoya did take the very
01:42:30Loses. Oh, no
01:42:32Believe it. He spun it and has he got the engine running? Yes, he has but
01:42:40He's got it going but he's lost any chance of taking that fifth position and team
01:42:45But the team are on the phones of mika salo to take it easy australia is going ballistic the fifth place mark weber is fought and
01:42:53Defended let's look again and see what happens down into the corner mika salo
01:42:57Well, you know, what can you say? At least the guy had a go
01:43:00He did have a go but he just got onto the slippery stuff a little wide
01:43:03Little offline and it just shows you how much on the limit these guys are again
01:43:08This is what montoya was doing. He was staying very out far to the left turns in but that's green mika
01:43:13Montoya find that out twice you needed to find it out once to
01:43:18Well rob you let's say of that fifth place
01:43:20But what a well-deserved drive mark weber has done a stunning job here this afternoon for his team for australia and for himself
01:43:26But what about this man?
01:43:28Michael shumaka is heading around to take victory in australia in the first round of the formula one world
01:43:36Championship he's picking up from where he left off at the end of last season in japan
01:43:42At suzuka, he took the victory from pole position
01:43:45Well, he didn't take pole position here in australia, but he is going to take those all important 10
01:43:51Maximum points and the ferrari fans are on their feet through the stands as michael
01:43:57shumaka comes through to take the first victory of
01:44:012002
01:44:05Well, there is the delight for the german
01:44:09And that fifth world title
01:44:11Could not be started on a better foot than by taking the first win of the season here comes montoya
01:44:17Well montoya certainly gave us some entertaining racing this afternoon
01:44:20And you know when that car the tires get together michael shumaka is going to have a massive fight on his hand for that title
01:44:27six points of montoya
01:44:28Four points to kimi raikkonen in his first drive for mclaren mercedes-benz
01:44:32What a great result for the young finn and he can only get better and better and where will it ever stop
01:44:39the three top teams of formula one
01:44:42Finishing in the top three places here and that's good in terms of making things wide open
01:44:47As we go towards just the second round of the championship in a couple of weeks time in malaysia
01:44:53Michael shumaka starting perfectly and mark weber. What a dream debut just get through the last few corners mark
01:45:00I know the fans are waving. There must be so many distractions
01:45:04Just focus on these last few corners to make an historic debut performance
01:45:10Well, and mark weber steps out of this car
01:45:12I hope he hasn't got a girlfriend because every woman in australia will want to have a bit of mark weber tonight
01:45:18Here he comes through the last two corners now turns 15 and 16 and what a cheer what a reception weber is receiving here
01:45:26The efforts of paul stood up with the tiny minardi team
01:45:30brought to fruition
01:45:32On his debut by the 25 year old australian
01:45:35Who's raced in the uk raced in europe over the last few years fought his way into formula one everybody fantastic joke. Well done
01:45:44Oh
01:45:45that is
01:45:46Just a dream to mark weber
01:45:50Michael shumaka might be the winner of today's race, but there is nobody happier than mark weber in fifth
01:45:56Well, there are three drivers today and three teams who've really got a fantastic result
01:46:00jaguar
01:46:01Minardi and toyota. No one would have expected anything like this the top three
01:46:06Well, nothing big surprise in that but what a great day for the teams that were at the back end of the grid
01:46:13And well, it's a bonus and they will remember this day long into this season
01:46:19There he is. Michael shumaka enjoying this victory lap that fist still held aloft and
01:46:27Well, we've seen that so often
01:46:30Try and listen in on the radio if we can
01:46:43Well, we're trying to get a shift to shore to michael shumaka in the ferrari pit but
01:46:47A little bit of interference precluding that but michael, I promise you look at that
01:46:51I mean, there are more italians here in melbourne. I think there are in milan turin or rome
01:46:56A replay of michael shumaka crossing the line and taking the win here in melbourne
01:47:01The 2001 car came good for them, didn't it? John? What a great decision it was for ferrari
01:47:06It was a very good decision a very positive decision and believe me people like ross brawn and michael shumaka and other
01:47:12Principal team members do not make those decisions lightly
01:47:16They did something which was a certain calculated risk
01:47:19But they knew pretty much that they had a car that was very very competitive
01:47:22Be it last year's car with a few bits and pieces added into it and improved from from this year's car
01:47:29And that just makes the other teams surely quake in their boots to see how fast ferrari are with their old car
01:47:36Just how fast will they be with the new car always an issue with getting the new car set up and reliability
01:47:41But you have to say ferrari are going to be tough to beat. But here's montoya
01:47:45He couldn't win today, but he did what he had to do. That's bring it home in second place
01:47:50He couldn't match the ferrari, but he's got six points and kimmy reichanan his best ever
01:47:56Grand prix finish in third place here today
01:47:59And I'll tell you those two reichanan and montoya are going to entertain us something
01:48:05This season the pair of them are out and out racers
01:48:08They're prepared to take risks do things that sometimes when you get a bit older in your career
01:48:12You're not quite prepared to do and there michael decides just to do a little bit of a burnout a couple of donuts
01:48:17Drives the car into the park ferme and watch his face. Watch how he leaps out of the car. He is absolutely over the moon
01:48:25a great win for michael schumacher
01:48:27And I want to see how the relationship is between him and montoya. They would have enjoyed that race
01:48:34it was a tough one, but
01:48:36They also know that each one will be the other's great rival throughout this season and herbie blash deputy race director for the fia
01:48:44waiting to take michael up to the press conference and michael turns round and
01:48:49Salutes the support he's had here throughout the weekend
01:48:55Mark webb is still enjoying himself out on track on this
01:48:59Slowing down that he's relishing it going as slowly as possible so that he can soak it all up
01:49:04Well your first grand prix finish with two points in the world championship. I mean it doesn't get any better
01:49:11Giving little burnouts as he comes down into the pits
01:49:14And the flags are waving and what a treat for the australian fans
01:49:19They turn up in huge numbers every year john
01:49:21But until this year they haven't had one of their own to cheer about not for a very long time and the last time
01:49:28An australian driver got any points to my memory was alan jones
01:49:32And that was back in 1980 when alan was in his world championship year
01:49:36That's right. Alan jones winning the title back in 1980 took 12 wins in his career racing between
01:49:421975 and 1981 and then making some returns in 83 85 and the last time he raced was in 1986
01:49:50Mark weber's the man now
01:49:52And he knows it. Well, I wonder who'll be in the front paper front page of the melbourne age in the morning
01:49:57I suspect it might be michael schumacher
01:49:59But I suspect it would be a parallel photograph of this man. Mark weber
01:50:05A glory day indeed for melbourne and for australia as mark weber
01:50:11Takes two points on his debut with minardi and with an australian running that team. It is based in the uk nowadays, but
01:50:19A split between the uk and italy a lot of people working in the uk
01:50:23But also in faenza in italy a combination paul stoddart bringing the whole thing together and what a delight for him
01:50:30Ben, you're looking at this crowd. You'd think you're at monza the number of ferrari flags
01:50:34On the pit on the circuit. In fact, it just is so reminiscent of what we've seen at monza over many many years
01:50:40Particularly when ferrari have had a victory the results then michael schumacher the winner from juan
01:50:45Pablo montoya kimi raikkonen in third eddie irvine for jaguar in fourth and what a great result
01:50:51That is mark weber in fifth mika salo taking the final point for toyota
01:50:55There's a story to each and every one of those alex young and pedro de la rosa were classified
01:51:01But outside the points and not classified well
01:51:04It's a long list kuhlfart villner frentzen bernaldi takuma sato. Jano
01:51:08Trulli barry keller the pole sitter and ralph schumacher who had the accident at the start nick heidfeld and felipe massa the two
01:51:15Sauber drivers also out of the race
01:51:18Not many finished but we still had a tremendous motor race
01:51:26There's one happy michael schumacher i'm pleased to see that smile return to his face when he's grumpy he's miserable
01:51:32everything back to normal montoya and raikkonen
01:51:36Faces we're going to see a lot more of in the next number of years
01:51:47So
01:52:17So
01:52:47Ha ha the smile is definitely back now
01:53:17Shh
01:53:48Foreign
01:53:52The italian national anthem as well for ferrari we celebrate yet another winner
01:53:59Here in australia and that's three in a row for michael schumacher around the albert park circuit here in melbourne
01:54:07And something we haven't talked about which is very important to ferrari apart from michael schumacher having to win
01:54:12Is of course in the constructors championship, they start off with 10 points williams bmw gets six and
01:54:19mclaren mercedes-benz gets four but it's those valuable 10 points in the constructors championship
01:54:23That that man jean todd is as interested in as he is in michael schumacher's world championship
01:54:29Definitely a very very important battle ross braun
01:54:32Keeping an eye on what's going on up there
01:54:34That's when pablo montoya receives his trophy for second place and he's certainly provided
01:54:40Plenty of entertainment in today's race. He's shown once again. What a racer he is
01:54:46Give him a car that's just got a little more performance and we're going to see a lot more and kimmy raikkonen
01:54:51Get used to this young man's face. We will see an awful lot more of it in the coming months of the 2002 season
01:54:59Yes
01:55:03Champagne time first time that kimmy raikkonen has had this privilege in formula one and he's going to get a little lesson
01:55:10He's going to be taught that spraying champagne is an art and a skill
01:55:13Michael schumacher has practiced in that as he's on the grand prix track and he'll have it done. Kimmy raikkonen's neck. Look
01:55:20The worst thing of course you get that in your eyes after you've been driving for 58 laps around melbourne
01:55:24You're sweating and it sticks to your eyes. It is awful, but does it matter first time in the podium four points in the bin
01:55:32Just you go for it, my son
01:55:34Well, there they are the top three from the first grand prix of the season
01:55:39Not a lot of contact there between michael schumacher and juan pablo montoya
01:55:43They know that each other they are be likely to be battling throughout this season
01:55:48And that's what we're looking forward to schumacher though taking first blood here in australia
01:55:55So
01:55:58Well very shortly they'll be into the press room and we'll get a first-hand account of how michael schumacher
01:56:04Saw the first corner incident and then of course the battles that he had to deal with with david coulthard and juan pablo montoya
01:56:11Of course this race may have been very different if we hadn't had that first corner accident taking out so many
01:56:17Not only of uh fancied runners, but many of the strong midfield runners as well
