00:00:00Remember what happened to him in France, his engine blew up.
00:00:03Remember what happened to him at Monaco, his rear suspension got cooked by a cracked exhaust pipe.
00:00:10Totally unpredictable what is going to happen in this race.
00:00:13All that you can say at the present moment is that the two fastest men this year in Hungary are up at the front on the grid.
00:00:22Michael Schumacher in that pole position, 6 tenths of a second faster than the pole position time last year,
00:00:29which was that old Mikko Häkkinen.
00:00:31You can say too that David Coulthard has out-qualified again Mikko Häkkinen,
00:00:37who was so much the top man of 1999 in terms of being up at the front of the grid.
00:00:43And what a sensational, and I use the word advisedly, performance from Ralph Schumacher,
00:00:49fourth on the grid in the Williams BMW, admittedly with the advantage of a special qualifying engine,
00:00:55which his teammate Jason Button did not have, by the way.
00:00:59And he's eighth on the grid.
00:01:01So it is a totally unpredictable event.
00:01:04You've heard a lot from James, Alan and others about strategies.
00:01:08Remember that although they can go through on one stop and are more likely to have two,
00:01:14Michael Schumacher had that sensational victory in 1998 in the Ferrari,
00:01:19when he had three stops and put on an absolutely fantastic centre stint.
00:01:25What's going to happen, Maestro?
00:01:27Well, three stops is the fastest way to go,
00:01:30but of course that then leaves you overtaking at some point in the race a fast two-stopper.
00:01:35Last year they stopped between 28 and 30, the main runners, laps 28 and 30,
00:01:40and again then around lap 55, 56, something like that.
00:01:45I'd be surprised if it's any different today.
00:01:47I don't really see that the teams have to change their strategy to fight each other too much today.
00:01:54I think it's a pretty straightforward race.
00:01:55The start is critical, as we've already covered.
00:01:58And Hakkinen's got a problem, though.
00:02:00I don't think his car's working still how he wants it.
00:02:03They were changing it before the warm-up, during the warm-up, I think going to the grid.
00:02:07But knowing Mika, he'll have it together somehow when it matters.
00:02:11So, Coulthard's on the dirty side of the track.
00:02:13He's got to get away well.
00:02:14I think Michael Schumacher shouldn't have a problem being into the first corner first,
00:02:18but he needs to watch out for Mika Hakkinen coming between the pair of them.
00:02:22He seems to have the start hooked up.
00:02:24His clutch action and the way he applies the power
00:02:27seems to be more consistent than his main championship rivals.
00:02:30So, the start is critical, as we've covered,
00:02:33and then it'll just be settling in for what looks like a long and very, very hot afternoon.
00:02:37And so say all of us.
00:02:39800 horsepower and a clutch about the size of your clenched fist.
00:02:43Bit of a new fashion here at the Hungaro Ring.
00:02:46Look for the chimneys on the side pods of the McLarens,
00:02:50while Ferrari have got them for the first race,
00:02:53and so have the two Williams cars.
00:02:55And we're riding now with Ralf Schumacher, or we were,
00:02:59as into Turn 1.
00:03:01It's 180 degrees.
00:03:02A very long, falling right-hander.
00:03:05By the way, Johnny Herbert had to come in and change cars.
00:03:08You can see him in the Jaguar with the red helmet in the background.
00:03:12Now you've got the start of the climb up to Turn 5.
00:03:16They do about 175 miles an hour on the way up.
00:03:20And you've seen it all from the cockpit.
00:03:22Yes, it's a great track.
00:03:24I hear a lot about this being Mickey Mouse,
00:03:26but most of the drivers really enjoy this racetrack.
00:03:29It's quite a challenge.
00:03:30It's never ceasing in terms of work rate behind the wheel.
00:03:34And I think we've always had some exciting times around it.
00:03:38So, so easy to fall off the road with a silly mistake.
00:03:41We're on board with Eddie Irvine.
00:03:42On that very corner last year, he ran wide,
00:03:45allowing Coulthard to go through and take that second place.
00:03:48So it's so easy later on in the race to make a simple mistake.
00:03:51And it's like Monaco here.
00:03:52I was talking to Alessi about this yesterday.
00:03:55You've been going for what seems an eternity,
00:03:57and they hang you a board out that says 50 laps to go.
00:03:59And you think you must be getting near the end.
00:04:02And it just takes the wind out of your sails a little bit.
00:04:05Well, Herbert is still in the race car, incidentally.
00:04:08They fixed it.
00:04:08Incidentally, you coined the phrase for the Hungaroring, did you not, Martin?
00:04:12Just like Monaco without the houses?
00:04:14I think I probably did.
00:04:15And it's certainly how it feels as you go uphill and downhill
00:04:19and always seem to be trying to get the nose of the car into a slow corner.
00:04:23And really, no straight worth its name where you can get a run on anybody.
00:04:28Well, Rubens Barrichello followed by Heinz-Harald Frenksen,
00:04:31and respectively the Scarlet Ferrari and the Yellow Jordan
00:04:35go round the last 180 degree right hander.
00:04:38They take that at an apex speed of about 80 miles an hour
00:04:42before accelerating it up to 180 miles an hour.
00:04:45We're back again with Ralf Schumacher,
00:04:47who will peel off to the right in a minute.
00:04:49He's starting on the dirty side of the track.
00:04:52There goes Mika Häkkinen ahead of him.
00:04:54So we've got Michael Schumacher up front.
00:04:57David Coulthard next to him.
00:04:58Watch Mika Häkkinen.
00:05:00Remember how he sprinted between Schumacher and Coulthard
00:05:04at the beginning of the German Grand Prix.
00:05:06And all the drivers, well, most of them had any brains anyway,
00:05:09on the right hand side of the grid
00:05:10were coming out of that last corner and sweeping right
00:05:13in front and around their particular grid slot
00:05:16to try to hoover up that side of the track in the morning warm-up.
00:05:20So 77 very, very tiring laps.
00:05:24Two lights on, three lights on, four lights on, five lights on.
00:05:29Out and go, out and go.
00:05:32Schumacher gets away well.
00:05:33Häkkinen is ahead of Coulthard.
00:05:35And Coulthard is being passed by Ralf Schumacher as well.
00:05:38Down into the first right hander.
00:05:40And through the McLaren, the McLaren goes into the lead.
00:05:43That is an incredible start by Mika Häkkinen.
00:05:46He did it in Germany.
00:05:47He's done it again.
00:05:48He's passed Schumacher.
00:05:49David Coulthard is in third position.
00:05:51And Ralf Schumacher is still in fourth place,
00:05:54followed by Romans Barranquillo in the Ferrari
00:05:56and Heinz-Harald Prentzen in the Jordan.
00:05:59So another sensational start for Mika Häkkinen.
00:06:03Now, does this mean to say that the Finn is on a long strategy,
00:06:09on light fuel to let him get away?
00:06:11We expected that with Michael Schumacher.
00:06:14I didn't expect it with Häkkinen.
00:06:16I don't think he is, Murray.
00:06:17I think he's just, as we said before the race started,
00:06:19Häkkinen has aced it with regard to the clutch.
00:06:22And somebody's off there.
00:06:23Somebody's lost the nose of their car.
00:06:25It's the BAR of Villeneuve has lost the front wing.
00:06:28But Häkkinen just hooks up.
00:06:30And he seems to get into second gear better too.
00:06:33Schumacher away reasonably well.
00:06:34Coulthard, an appalling start.
00:06:36But Häkkinen seems to be able to build momentum
00:06:39and keep it going more quickly and more strongly
00:06:42than the other two competitors.
00:06:43Well, the first seven cars are the seven
00:06:46that were on the grid up front.
00:06:47But there's a change right at the front
00:06:49because Mika Häkkinen leads Michael Schumacher.
00:06:52And Michael Schumacher has got a tussle on his hands now
00:06:56because it is so difficult to get past on this track.
00:06:59And Mika Häkkinen is not about to move over.
00:07:01Now, so blistering one from Häkkinen.
00:07:03He's certainly keeping that.
00:07:04Now watch, Coulthard just bogged down.
00:07:06Didn't get away at all.
00:07:07No, they've cut away from that replay.
00:07:10And Häkkinen just literally sprinted
00:07:12between the pair of them.
00:07:13And it seems like he gets into second gear.
00:07:15Maybe he pulls it a little bit later than the others
00:07:17and just keeps building acceleration.
00:07:19Then Coulthard had to keep really tight
00:07:22around the outside of Ralf Schumacher
00:07:23and managed to get a track position down into turn two.
00:07:26Critical move there for Coulthard.
00:07:28It keeps him in touch with these two pace setters.
00:07:31But I think Schumacher will undoubtedly,
00:07:34undoubtedly have a faster car than Mika Häkkinen
00:07:36in the race.
00:07:37There goes the nose of Villeneuve.
00:07:40He's running to the back of de la Rosa in the arrows.
00:07:43And we don't know if he's done any damage to that arrows.
00:07:45And they're both in the pits.
00:07:46There is the BAR getting a new nose cone.
00:07:49But it's destroyed the race for Jacques Villeneuve,
00:07:51who of course won it here in 96 and 97 in the Williams.
00:07:55And de la Rosa in the pit too.
00:07:56So maybe he did get some damage to his rear tire.
00:07:59De la Rosa you saw smoking away
00:08:01behind the picture there of Villeneuve.
00:08:04But look at this.
00:08:05The three top men in the World Championship.
00:08:07The two McLarens sandwiching Michael Schumacher
00:08:11in the Ferrari.
00:08:12Häkkinen, Schumacher, Coulthard.
00:08:14And they're breaking away now
00:08:16because Ralf Schumacher is a bit of a roadblock.
00:08:18There's a gap behind Coulthard.
00:08:21And then it is Ralf Schumacher in the Williams BMW.
00:08:24David Coulthard is the fastest man
00:08:26on the track at the moment.
00:08:27And Rubens Barrichello is bottled up
00:08:29by Ralf Schumacher's Williams BMW.
00:08:32Barrichello in the second Ferrari.
00:08:33And he's not even looking like getting past him.
00:08:36No, Coulthard fast is in the warm-up this morning.
00:08:39Häkkinen off the pace.
00:08:40The two Ferraris really just about matching Coulthard's pace.
00:08:43So it doesn't surprise me
00:08:45to see that Häkkinen cannot make a break for it, Murray.
00:08:48So the question now, and it's very early in the race,
00:08:50of course, we're on lap three out of 77 laps,
00:08:53is what about the strategies?
00:08:55When are they going to come in
00:08:56and take on more fuel and new Bridgestone tyres?
00:09:00All I can tell you at the moment is that David Coulthard,
00:09:03he keeps on accelerating and closing up to David Coulthard.
00:09:07He's put up the fastest lap.
00:09:08Here's the replay now.
00:09:09There is Michael Schumacher getting away.
00:09:11Watch Micah Häkkinen behind the Ferrari.
00:09:13David Coulthard almost bogs down.
00:09:16Ralf Schumacher gets his nose ahead.
00:09:18But David Coulthard fights back
00:09:20and Micah Häkkinen goes through on the inside of Turn 1,
00:09:23just as Rubens Barrichello did in the Stuart last year
00:09:27to make up places.
00:09:29That is where Häkkinen was absolutely brilliant
00:09:31right at the start as he was at Hockenheim.
00:09:34Yes, look at the back of Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher there.
00:09:37They were incredibly close to touching,
00:09:39but managed to get away with it.
00:09:41And now Häkkinen has pulled a slight advantage
00:09:43and does a very, very fast lap.
00:09:46Six tenths faster than Schumacher.
00:09:48Whether Schumacher made a mistake
00:09:49while we were having that replay at the start, I don't know.
00:09:52But Häkkinen and Coulthard, very low.
00:09:541 minute 20...
00:09:56Well, 22.1 for Häkkinen, 22.7 for Schumacher,
00:09:5923.2 for David Coulthard.
00:10:01So I don't know what's going on there.
00:10:03Fastest lap last year, David Coulthard, 1 minute 20.7.
00:10:07So he's about one and a half seconds slower now,
00:10:09but with a pretty heavy fuel load at the beginning of the race.
00:10:12Well, the two McLarens started the race
00:10:14with brand new sticker front tyres.
00:10:16And they seem to have...
00:10:17Certainly Häkkinen has brought those in
00:10:19and making them work very well
00:10:20as we head halfway now around lap four.
00:10:24So on lap four, Mikko Häkkinen leads Schumacher.
00:10:27Coulthard is third.
00:10:28Ralf Schumacher is still fourth.
00:10:30And he's nearly four seconds behind the lead car
00:10:32at the present moment.
00:10:33Rubens Barrichello in the Ferraris.
00:10:35Fifth ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
00:10:37just eight tenths of a second.
00:10:39Seventh is Fisichella.
00:10:40Eighth is Jenson.
00:10:41But ninth is Eddie Irvine, who's gained a place.
00:10:43Fourth is tenth, and James Allen has got news.
00:10:45Murray, the significance of the new tyres on the McLarens
00:10:48is, of course, that they do tend to go off
00:10:49about the second to the fifth laps.
00:10:51We've seen that throughout the weekend,
00:10:52these super-soft Bridgestones.
00:10:53Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello
00:10:55both started on tyres which had been bedded in.
00:10:57So Michael has got to attack in these next two or three laps.
00:11:00He doesn't have any chance of getting past Mikko
00:11:02because after that, Mikko's tyres will start to come back to him.
00:11:04I saw Mikko making big changes on the grid
00:11:06to the front end of the car.
00:11:07He was obviously unhappy with it,
00:11:08but seems to be working okay for him at the moment.
00:11:11Well, Eddie Irvine has done well.
00:11:13He's gone ahead of Mikko Salo,
00:11:15who started on the grid before him.
00:11:16And the Jaguar is now in ninth position,
00:11:19well in the top ten.
00:11:20Alexander Wurz in the Benetton is in tenth position.
00:11:23And Mikko Salo, who has been going so well in the Sauber,
00:11:27as has his teammate, Pedro Diniz.
00:11:29They've been going much better here at the Hockenheim ring,
00:11:32at the Ancara ring, than they have done before.
00:11:36And they are now in, respectively, 11th and 12th places
00:11:41as we watch the race leaders,
00:11:43with Mikko Häkkinen increasing his speed
00:11:46all the time.
00:11:47He's now leading Michael Schumacher by 1.2 seconds.
00:11:51You can see the lead stretching all the time.
00:11:53That's what's happened.
00:11:54You've seen Michael Schumacher fall away
00:11:56and Coulthard fall away by the same amount.
00:11:59I think those first two or three laps,
00:12:00tucked up in the slipstream of Häkkinen's McLaren,
00:12:04has probably done some damage to their tyres.
00:12:06Häkkinen there understeering quite badly,
00:12:08as it happens through 11th and 12th.
00:12:10But Häkkinen now clearly has the superior pace
00:12:13through the middle section.
00:12:15The critical, slow part of this racetrack
00:12:17with all the little left-rights
00:12:19at just 60-70 mile an hour corners.
00:12:21And he's going to extend that lead this lap yet again.
00:12:23Well, interesting, because during the warm-up this morning,
00:12:27he was 1.2 seconds off the pace.
00:12:29You're right, Martin.
00:12:30It's now 1.5 seconds between Häkkinen in the lead
00:12:33and Schumacher in second place.
00:12:35And Häkkinen was testing different fuel loads this morning.
00:12:38It certainly seems to have worked,
00:12:40because look at him now.
00:12:42Yes, but he's only...
00:12:44You know, he is pulling the lead.
00:12:45He's two to three tenths faster than Schumacher and Coulthard.
00:12:48That doesn't suggest he's on a three-stopper, for example.
00:12:50It's not enough of a time difference, no.
00:12:52Maybe he could be running a bit lighter,
00:12:54but I'd be surprised if he's on anything
00:12:57other than a two-stopper.
00:12:58We'll have to wait and see.
00:12:59Yeah, it's so confusing these days.
00:13:00They can bring him in early, bring him in late.
00:13:02For instance, last year, David Coulthard only stopped once,
00:13:06and he came in on lap 58 out of 77.
00:13:10We thought he was never going to come in.
00:13:12Four out of the top six last year stopped twice.
00:13:15Two out of the top six,
00:13:17that's Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello,
00:13:19only stopped once.
00:13:21And now, Mikko Häkkinen,
00:13:22one and a half seconds clear
00:13:25of Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari.
00:13:26There is the visual gap down to David Coulthard.
00:13:30Ralf Schumacher is three seconds behind David Coulthard
00:13:33in the Williams BMW.
00:13:34He is still in fourth place,
00:13:37and now we've just got to let this race settle.
00:13:40Let the race come to the drivers.
00:13:41We're on lap six.
00:13:42We're getting on towards one 11th distance.
00:13:46There's Häkkinen murdering them
00:13:47in the middle sector of the lap again.
00:13:49A full six tenths quicker than Coulthard
00:13:51and three tenths quicker than Schumacher,
00:13:54just in one section of this racetrack.
00:13:56Ralf Schumacher's holding there,
00:13:58fourth place easily from Rubens Barrichello,
00:14:00who says this is not his best circuit.
00:14:02Frentzen's sixth, Fisichella's seventh.
00:14:05Button there, running well in eighth.

00:14:09rounding out the top ten just in front.
00:14:11The two drivers of Saarland in it.
00:14:13Now you're looking at Eddie Irvine's Jaguar,
00:14:15and the good news is that it is slowly getting better.
00:14:19They've had and are going to continue
00:14:20to have a very rough time.
00:14:22We're riding with Irvine now,
00:14:24but Neil Ressler, the new top man at Jaguar,
00:14:27is not too unhappy with the way things are going.
00:14:29They know they've got an enormous amount of work to do.
00:14:32The Cosworth engine is very good,
00:14:34but it's the back end of the car in particular,
00:14:36the handling of the car that needs to be improved,
00:14:39and there's a lot of work to do
00:14:40on the infrastructure of the team.
00:14:42But Jaguar has put everything into Formula 1,
00:14:45and they will get their reward eventually.
00:14:47Yes, they could do with a result today though, Murray.
00:14:49There's every boss of, for example,
00:14:52Nasser of Ford, Ritzler of Jaguar,
00:14:54and all of their sponsors,
00:14:56just about every Supremo that's involved
00:14:58with that car you're looking at is here today,
00:15:01and they certainly could do with putting on a show
00:15:03in front of that collection.
00:15:05Look at Jenson Button behind Fisichella.
00:15:07Fisichella, there's the vehicle there,
00:15:08and there's Jenson Button,
00:15:09and there is Eddie Irvine.
00:15:11Hakkinen won 20.895.
00:15:15Now he's on some kind of spectacular pace.
00:15:16That's absolutely amazing.
00:15:18Yes.
00:15:18That's more or less what he did in the warm-up this morning
00:15:21on his best effort.
00:15:22So Hakkinen has either got less fuel
00:15:24or those changes they've been making all weekend to that car
00:15:28just suddenly hit the sweet spot.
00:15:29Well, if he's got less fuel,
00:15:31that means to say he's going to have to come in early.
00:15:34He needs to get a little...
00:15:36And Irvine takes Button.
00:15:37I think Button ran wide into Turn 1,
00:15:40and Irvine taking over that 8th place.
00:15:42I think Jenson got out as Fisichella recovers
00:15:45onto the Track 2.
00:15:46So maybe there's some fluid or something
00:15:48down there into Turn 1,
00:15:49but Jenson Button out into that territory
00:15:52where there's almost no return,
00:15:54but he did manage to keep it on around the outside.
00:15:56Here we go.
00:15:56Look, and it's Fisichella spinning off.
00:15:58Button sort of almost being sucked along
00:16:00and followed into Fisichella's track,
00:16:02and Eddie Irvine getting a run on the short straight
00:16:04down into Turn 2.
00:16:06So Irvine is where Fisichella was,
00:16:08and the answer is 7th place for the Jaguar of Eddie Irvine.
00:16:12There is Fisichella, you see,
00:16:13on the left, running very wide indeed,
00:16:15nearly losing it, going onto the grass.
00:16:17Jenson Button sees his front full of spinning Benetton,
00:16:21stays on the track.
00:16:22Eddie Irvine dives through on the right,
00:16:24and Micah Häkkinen is now leading by 3.1 seconds
00:16:28on lap 8 out of 77.
00:16:30Yes, it seemed, if there's not oil on the track,
00:16:32it seemed as if Jenson almost got a bit of tunnel vision there
00:16:35and followed Fisichella onto the wide line,
00:16:38but managed to keep it together.
00:16:39So Irvine jumping two places then,
00:16:41as you say, up into 7th place.
00:16:44McLaren leads, Ferrari 2nd, McLaren 3rd.
00:16:47Looking good for Woking.
00:16:49Williams BMW is 4th, and Ferrari is 5th.
00:16:53Rubens Barrichello is 1.4 seconds
00:16:56behind Ralph Schumacher's Williams BMW,
00:16:59and the Brazilian seemingly cannot do anything about it.
00:17:02He's not right up tight behind the Williams BMW.
00:17:05He needs to be, because he needs to be pressuring Ralph Schumacher.
00:17:09And David Coulthard is now on a really quick lap.
00:17:11He's gone through the first sector of this course,
00:17:14which is 2.5 miles long,
00:17:17faster than anybody else has gone.
00:17:19A tenth of a second, that's not very much,
00:17:21but if you keep on piling up an increase like that,
00:17:24you can close right on the car in front.
00:17:26And at the present moment,
00:17:27he's 1.5 seconds behind Ralph Michael Schumacher.
00:17:32And just look at the way that Mika Häkkinen is forcing that car.
00:17:35Like Imola, you have to really use the kerbs here at the Hungaroring,
00:17:40and that may have phased Jenson Button a bit when he first came in,
00:17:43but he's really attacked now.
00:17:44Yes, Häkkinen attacking so much there.
00:17:46He really had to fight the car to get it into the last corner,
00:17:49and that's a very easy corner to spin on.
00:17:50So Mika sensationally attacking the racetrack,
00:17:54trying to build himself an advantage,
00:17:56but struggling there in that last corner.
00:17:58The car generally looks very, very good.
00:18:00Occasionally, you see it pick up an awful lot of understeer,
00:18:03which will wear his front tires more than necessary.
00:18:06But it just shows in Formula 1, you can never, ever give up.
00:18:10Michael Schumacher had an enormous lead in the championship earlier on,
00:18:14so much so that people were saying it was all over,
00:18:16but it's never over until it's over.
00:18:19And Mika Häkkinen, who has won two races this year,
00:18:22Spain and Austria, to Michael Schumacher's five,
00:18:24and here is Jack Villeneuve in the BAR,
00:18:28diving through and passing the arrows of Pedro de la Rosa,
00:18:32and going through,
00:18:34whether he came in together.
00:18:36Yes, they're fighting for last place,
00:18:37in fact, when they tripped over each other on the first lap.
00:18:40So Villeneuve takes 21st from de la Rosa,
00:18:43but now a brake pedal problem, apparently,
00:18:47so spongy brakes in the Prost.
00:18:50Poor John Alessi, that is.
00:18:51That's Alessi's car,
00:18:52so now at least Villeneuve's up to 20th place.
00:18:55And look, Häkkinen now catching de la Rosa all ready to lap him.
00:18:59Of course, they both had to stop at the end of the first lap,
00:19:03de la Rosa and Villeneuve, basically.
00:19:04Well, now de la Rosa should see the silver and black McLaren
00:19:08coming up in his mirrors and move over.
00:19:11If he doesn't, if he delays Mika Häkkinen,
00:19:13obviously it's going to give Michael Schumacher
00:19:15the opportunity to close up,
00:19:16and he needs to be doing so,
00:19:18because it's now 4.3 seconds,
00:19:20and de la Rosa lets Mika Häkkinen
00:19:23dive through on the inside of Turn 1,
00:19:25drop down into Turn 2, right-handed Turn 3,
00:19:29start to climb up 175 miles an hour
00:19:32on the approach to the kink at Turn 4,
00:19:35and then brake hard down to about 85 miles an hour
00:19:39for the third gear right-hand Turn 5
00:19:42that they're coming to now.
00:19:44And it looks as though Jean Alessi's...
00:19:46Oh, I was going to say his race is run,
00:19:48but they've got the wheel on.
00:19:50And Alessi was in doubt about starting this race
00:19:53after that tremendous shunt that he had
00:19:56at Hockenheim with Pedro Diniz's Sauber.
00:19:59It affected the Frenchman for quite a long time.
00:20:02He couldn't sleep for three nights,
00:20:03but he's got himself together again now,
00:20:05and he's fighting as he always does,
00:20:08and as Mika Häkkinen does.

00:22:58and lost well over a second on that lap,
00:23:00so the gap back from Schumacher to Coulthard,
00:23:03second and third, is now 2.3 seconds,
00:23:06so David's got to get back on
00:23:08and try and close that gap down.
00:23:10Apparently, Lacey, the early reports,
00:23:12he had brake problems.
00:23:13Apparently, it was actually a steering problem.
00:23:15Maybe in the hydraulic system,
00:23:17some of these cars run power steering now,
00:23:19some of them electronic power steering,
00:23:21others hydraulic, but whatever.
00:23:23Alessi, as you say, Murray, is out of the race,
00:23:25and now, for the first time,
00:23:27both Schumacher and Coulthard are faster
00:23:30than Micah Hakkinen for the first time in this race.
00:23:33And Micah Hakkinen is closing up on Jacques Villeneuve,
00:23:36who's 20th and last but one,
00:23:38having been in the previous two times winner,
00:23:42Jacques Villeneuve from Canada,
00:23:44driving the BAR Honda,
00:23:46which just does not seem to suit this circuit.
00:23:49He didn't qualify well, he didn't go...
00:23:51He went better in the warm-up period this morning,
00:23:53but he started down in 16th, 1-6,
00:23:5616th position on the grid,
00:23:58and that was in the car where
00:24:00he has been doing so much better this year.
00:24:02He's had two fourth places.
00:24:03There is Villeneuve, there is Micah Hakkinen,
00:24:06there's virtually a full lap between them,
00:24:08and Jacques Villeneuve will move over
00:24:11and let Micah Hakkinen through.
00:24:13We all know perfectly well that there is no point
00:24:15in trying to stop him getting past,
00:24:17because Micah Hakkinen is nearly a full lap ahead of him,
00:24:20and over five seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher,
00:24:23who is two and a half seconds ahead of David Coulthard.
00:24:26Over the line goes Hakkinen.
00:24:28He is now on his 15th lap.
00:24:30Yes, a lot of understeer in that McLaren still.
00:24:32It's building slowly, so it depends.
00:24:35We're going to have to wait until very early 2021
00:24:39to see if Hakkinen comes in,
00:24:41see if he is running a lower fuel load,
00:24:43but meanwhile, he's picking up some understeer,
00:24:45and now Schumacher and Coulthard are pegging him
00:24:48and slightly reducing his advantage.
00:24:50Now 4.9 seconds that Schumacher is behind Hakkinen.
00:24:54And Alesi, as I talked to you,
00:24:56is rejoining the Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:24:59They fixed whatever the problem was.
00:25:01We now have no retirements, I'm glad to say,
00:25:04and you can see that Micah Hakkinen
00:25:07is carving his way through the field.
00:25:08He's losing time, but of course,
00:25:10Michael Schumacher, who's catching him
00:25:12at the present moment very slowly
00:25:14as a result of Micah Hakkinen losing time in traffic,
00:25:17he's going to then have to pass those cars himself.
00:25:20He's going to have to pass Jacques Villeneuve.
00:25:23He's going to have to pass Marc Genet,
00:25:25who is the next target for Micah Hakkinen
00:25:28as he comes down to the bottom chicane,
00:25:31turns into the second gear, 55 mile an hour,
00:25:34turn 13, up to the double right-hander,
00:25:37turn 14, 15, which completes the lap.
00:25:40He's going to go through into his 16th lap.
00:25:43Michael Schumacher had got the gap
00:25:45down to 4.9 seconds on the previous lap.
00:25:48Micah Hakkinen has had that little bit of slowing
00:25:51because of traffic.
00:25:52How far is Michael Schumacher behind him now?
00:25:54And the answer is two-tenths of a second more behind him,
00:25:585.1 seconds.
00:26:00There is the German.
00:26:02Well, I am at a loss for this,
00:26:05to be quite honest with you.
00:26:07I'm expecting, therefore, Micah Hakkinen to come in earlier.

00:26:44Absolutely.
00:26:45Well, Michael Schumacher there,
00:26:47as Fisichella comes into the pits in the Benetton,
00:26:52and he's down in 16th position.
00:26:54Michael Schumacher must, from his point of view,
00:26:57get points in this race.
00:26:59He's still leading the World Championship, amazingly,
00:27:02by two points from Coulthard and Hakkinen,
00:27:05who are both tying on the same number of points,
00:27:0854 of them.
00:27:09But Schumacher's got to get points in this race
00:27:12if he's to keep his World Championship hopes alive.
00:27:14Fisichella, who's spun twice already in this race,
00:27:17complaining of lack of rear grip,
00:27:19and he's stopped just to have some new tyres
00:27:21to try to fix the problem.
00:27:23And he's about to have the silver McLaren
00:27:25bearing down on him to lap him.
00:27:27Just 17 laps into this race,
00:27:30and a new fastest lap for Hakkinen, a 1.20.6.
00:27:34Amazing where Hakkinen has found this speed.
00:27:37He looked totally lost in the warm-up this morning.
00:27:40Yes, it is quite incredible.
00:27:42Like I said, you can never ignore the Flying Finn
00:27:46as he signs himself.
00:27:48And he's very much on a charge at the present moment.

00:27:55Two World Championships.
00:27:57There were people who thought earlier this year
00:27:59that Micah Hakkinen, having won the World Championship not once but twice,
00:28:03had lost his motivation.
00:28:05He's certainly giving the lie to that belief now
00:28:08as he laps Fisichella and goes through.
00:28:11More news from James Allen.
00:28:13A sense of calm prevailing down at Ferrari, surprisingly enough.
00:28:16I understand you're surprised at the pace of Hakkinen,
00:28:20but I was just looking back to a conversation I had yesterday
00:28:23with Ron Dennis of McLaren, and he said,
00:28:25you know, tomorrow, James, we're going to cover whatever Schumacher can do.
00:28:27We're comfortable, but we're not going to send those drivers out to be selfish.
00:28:30We're going to send them out to do a team job for us,
00:28:32and that means they're going to be doing different things
00:28:34to cover whatever Michael may do.
00:28:35And that's what I think's going on here.
00:28:37I don't think there's a lot less fuel in Hakkinen's car.
00:28:39I just think he's driving the wheels off that car at the moment.
00:28:41But for sure, there's a slight variation in what he's doing,
00:28:44what Schumacher's doing, and what Coulthard is doing.
00:28:46And that variation could well lead to the result of the race at the end.
00:28:49Things very static at the front, to be quite honest with you.
00:28:52Michael Schumacher is still just over 6.3, 6.4 seconds behind the leader,
00:28:59but he's staying ahead of David Coulthard.
00:29:02And now, Ralf Schumacher, as Coulthard starts to go through the traffic,
00:29:06is closing marginally from fourth position in the Williams BMW,
00:29:10on the McLaren in front of him, and easing away from Barrichello.
00:29:14Ralf Schumacher is actually lapping about four-tenths of a second fast
00:29:18from the Barrichello in the Ferrari in fifth place.
00:29:21Frentzen is still holding sixth position.
00:29:23Eddie Irvine is still seventh.
00:29:25There's a bit of traffic ahead of Michael Schumacher,
00:29:27but I hear what you're saying, James,
00:29:28but unless Hakkinen pits in the next two or three laps,
00:29:32and Michael can carry on for another four, five, six laps after that,
00:29:37Hakkinen's giving absolutely nothing away.
00:29:39He's out there racing, and he's leading the Grand Prix on speed and merit
00:29:43at this point, unless he has to pit in the very near future.
00:29:47Now we should see something, because remember,
00:29:50Hakkinen has passed Villeneuve, and Schumacher there
00:29:54is catching the Canadian in twentieth position in the BAR,
00:29:58and gets the advantage of the straight.

00:30:07Now, ahead of him, there's Fisichella in the Benetton,

00:30:39Remember, those two tangled at the start of the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim.
00:30:44Fisichella being lapped in this instance, giving no problems whatsoever.

00:30:51So, Hakkinen leads by 6.5 seconds now over Schumacher,
00:30:56who's 3.3 ahead of David Coulthard.

00:31:24In the same way, Olivier Panis will be with the BAR team in place of Riccardo Zonta.
00:31:30Mikasalo will be leaving Sauber and being the test driver for Toyota,
00:31:35who joined Formula 1 in the year 2002.

00:32:13The leader, Hakkinen, is 11 seconds ahead of his teammate, David Coulthard, that you're looking at now.
00:32:20And Coulthard has again been caught marginally by Ralf Schumacher in the Williams BMW as a result of the traffic.

00:32:30Just about 25%.
00:32:32One quarter distance completed for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:32:36And at the present moment, if they stay where they are now,
00:32:41Mika Hakkinen will move into the lead of the World Championship for the first time this year.
00:32:47But there's still three quarters of the race to run.
00:32:50And, of course, McLaren similarly are in a very strong position in the Constructors' Championship at the present moment.
00:32:57They're only four points behind Ferrari when this race began.
00:33:01And at the present moment, they're on 14 World Championship points
00:33:06in comparison with six for Ferrari with Schumacher and two for Barrichello.
00:33:11So that's eight points, six points gained by McLaren.
00:33:15They would similarly take the lead in the Constructors' Championship if the positions are held to the end of the race.
00:33:21But do I expect them to be?
00:33:23No, I do not.
00:33:25So things could be very different.
00:33:27Lap 21 then.
00:33:29And look at Mika Hakkinen looking as though his car is tethered to the apex of the bend
00:33:34by a piece of very stout chain as he hurtles around the bends.
00:33:39The G-forces are absolutely terrific.
00:33:42There are those chimneys on the side pods that I was talking about.
00:33:45Now we're into your window, Martin.
00:33:48We're on lap 21.
00:33:50Is Hakkinen going to come in?
00:33:52Is he on a light fuel load?
00:33:53Well, no sign of activity.
00:33:54We're looking from our commentary box straight into the McLaren garage.
00:33:58And no sign of activity whatsoever in there at the moment.
00:34:01So Hakkinen carries on and still he pulls another 3 tenths of a second out of Michael Schumacher.
00:34:07They lead now up to 7.9.
00:34:10And Coulthard is the one struggling on pace.
00:34:12We know he's just had to clear that traffic.
00:34:14But Coulthard may be running long on fuel.
00:34:17But for whatever reason, not showing.
00:34:19He's been fastest in every session.
00:34:21With the exception of qualifying, hasn't he?
00:34:23Where Schumacher picked him to pole, of course.
00:34:27But Coulthard not showing the kind of pace we expected after the warm-up.
00:34:33So what is Michael Schumacher going to be saying if they stay where they are now at the end?
00:34:38When they're in the interviews?
00:34:40I had a problem with the car.
00:34:41My tyres went off.
00:34:42I lost the gear.
00:34:43The engine wasn't pulling far.
00:34:45There's 56 laps to go yet.
00:34:47Murray, I think it's going to unfold.
00:34:49And we'll have the answers nearer the end of the race.
00:34:52But Hakkinen's car looks good.
00:34:54And he's certainly got an astonishing pace.

00:34:59The only driver who can get anywhere near that.

00:41:36launch Barrichello past the
00:41:38Williams of Schumacher, bring him in early
00:41:40and give him a clear piece of track.
00:41:42They can calculate where Rubens
00:41:44would rejoin the racetrack.
00:41:46If there's any cars, if there's any traffic
00:41:48at that point of the race
00:41:50and we'll see if it is indeed Rubens
00:41:52coming in this lap or whether they're choosing
00:41:54to bring in Schumacher. Schumacher in

00:42:00So Schumacher actually had slightly
00:42:02less fuel than Häkkinen.
00:42:04So there's a surprise and I would
00:42:06expect Häkkinen to come in on the very
00:42:08next lap. It's a good
00:42:10stop, is it? Yes, it is.

00:42:14Michael Schumacher and that
00:42:16seems to say that David Coulthard
00:42:18will be up into
00:42:202nd position and indeed
00:42:22Ralf Schumacher and
00:42:24Barrichello go through before Michael
00:42:26Schumacher rejoins the race.
00:42:28So now Micah Häkkinen, who has not
00:42:30stopped, is leading. David Coulthard is up
00:42:32into 2nd place and he has not
00:42:34stopped, of course. David Coulthard
00:42:36is 2nd,
00:42:38Ralf Schumacher is 3rd,
00:42:40Barrichello is 4th and down to
00:42:425th position as a result of his stop

00:43:02incredibly quickly as the Minardi
00:43:04rejoins the track. Well, they're great
00:43:06friends out of the cars, the
00:43:08two Schumachers, but
00:43:10Ralf will not give way to
00:43:12Michael just because he's his
00:43:14brother. We've seen that in the past,
00:43:16notably when Ralf Schumacher
00:43:18was driving for Jordan and he had a tremendous
00:43:20scrap with his brother in the Ferrari
00:43:22in the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:43:24Refused to give way, why should he? He was
00:43:26ahead and he made Michael fight his
00:43:28way past. There's Johnny Herbert in for a
00:43:30stop. We've seen Fisichella drive
00:43:32straight into the garage and retire
00:43:34from the race. I would imagine he'll talk about
00:43:36handling problems, it would seem, and
00:43:38a long, long stop there for Johnny Herbert
00:43:40and, look, Barrichello will yield.
00:43:42Barrichello will yield and let Michael
00:43:44take the line into the first corner.
00:43:46And where is Ralf Schumacher? He's in the pit.
00:43:48That's good news for Michael. Ralf
00:43:50is on a two-stopper, so now
00:43:52Michael's got some clear track
00:43:54to make the most of those new tyres.
00:43:56So, now, when is Mika Hakkinen
00:43:58coming in? He is 18
00:44:001.8 seconds ahead of
00:44:02David Coulthard and he was
00:44:0432 seconds ahead
00:44:06of Michael Schumacher. That should
00:44:08allow him plenty of time to come in,
00:44:10stop, take on more
00:44:12fuel, take on four new wheels
00:44:14and tyres and still get back
00:44:16out in the lead. It should do,
00:44:18but will it? He's still staying out
00:44:20on lap 29 out of 77
00:44:22as Schumacher
00:44:24ahead of Barrichello and
00:44:26with the knowledge that his brother
00:44:28Ralf is not going to be
00:44:30in his way because he's been in the pits,
00:44:32hurries on. This is composition, but it's
00:44:34not really a fight. They are on
00:44:36different strategies, so it's
00:44:38understandable. It's the right thing to do.
00:44:40It's team play. It's a team championship.
00:44:42It's a team sport and there's
00:44:44no point in Barrichello holding Schumacher
00:44:46up, who's faster, anyway. But
00:44:48Michael, on the three or four corners I've

00:44:56And into the pits comes
00:44:58Rubens Barrichello, the
00:45:00second of the two
00:45:02of the top five men, the third
00:45:04to come in because
00:45:06the Ferrari comes
00:45:08to a standstill
00:45:10and those prongs in the ground are
00:45:12to touch the bottom of the car and
00:45:14release any electrical static
00:45:16to prevent the possibility of a fire
00:45:18in the pit lane. 6.7
00:45:20seconds. That is six-tenths
00:45:22of a second faster than
00:45:24Michael Schumacher's stop.
00:45:26It's a nightmare scenario there for Rubens
00:45:28as a B.A.R. and a Minardi. And look,
00:45:30he slots in this time around
00:45:32in front of Raul. So that has
00:45:34launched him in front of Raul Schumacher
00:45:36and he should be able to defend that position
00:45:38as he's getting back up to speed.
00:45:40So that worked out very, very well for
00:45:42Rubens Barrichello. Indeed it did. A masterly
00:45:44bit of planning by the Ferrari
00:45:46team men, notably Ross Brawn
00:45:48on the pit lane. In comes
00:45:50Pedro Diniz from 11th place in the
00:45:52Salva. We're on lap 30.
00:45:54Hakkinen leads, cool-fired by
00:45:5617 seconds. Michael Schumacher is
00:45:58third, 32 seconds behind.
00:46:00Vicar Hakkinen stays out.
00:46:02My goodness, this is a fantastic
00:46:04drive because he's now on lap
00:46:0630. He's getting on
00:46:08towards half distance. He still
00:46:10hasn't stopped. So he had a very
00:46:12heavy fuel load, not a very light fuel
00:46:14load. If he's one stopping,
00:46:16he'll come in on roundabout lap 38
00:46:18and that would be amazing.
00:46:20This is surprising everybody
00:46:22in the pit lane, with the possible
00:46:24exception of Hakkinen and his
00:46:26crew on his car because he has not
00:46:28shown that kind of pace at any time
00:46:30this weekend. James, what can you tell us?
00:46:32This is absolutely fascinating. You know I described
00:46:34it as like a game of chess. I can tell you that McLaren are
00:46:36going to make a stop very soon. Hopefully I'm going to tell you
00:46:38before I finish which of the two cars it's going to
00:46:40be. Look at this as a scenario, guys.
00:46:42Schumacher comes in on lap 27, stays
00:46:44through for 7.3 seconds. Now normally
00:46:46that's 41 kilos of fuel have gone in.
00:46:48If that was a planned stop, he'd be coming back
00:46:50in again around lap 53 as the McLaren guys
00:46:52go on to the open. So there will be a stop shortly.
00:46:54But what if there was some fuel left in the Ferrari
00:46:56already? What if Michael's going to run
00:46:58longer than lap 53? And what
00:47:00if he's trying to box him in? What if Ferrari are trying
00:47:02to box in McLaren by short-fueling
00:47:04Barrichello? He will be in front
00:47:06you see of Hakkinen when he rejoins.
00:47:08That's why they're bringing Hakkinen in now.
00:47:10I described it as a chess game. Watch these pieces move.
00:47:12Well here is Hakkinen anyway.
00:47:14James, I don't know where you are but
00:47:16give me a shout if you're

00:47:22Ferrari are stuck with the policy of scrub

00:47:28to get him out in front of Barrichello. Has it worked?

00:47:34Barrichello was only 6.7 seconds.
00:47:36And 80 miles an hour is the pit lane
00:47:38speed limit. The track is clear.
00:47:40There is Fisichella coming towards us.

00:47:48Turn 1. And it
00:47:50is Michael Schumacher.
00:47:52So the gap has come down
00:47:54considerably but not nearly
00:47:56enough to satisfy Michael Schumacher
00:47:58locking up his left front. Still
00:48:00in third position behind David
00:48:02Coulthard who is now the fastest man on
00:48:04the track. Coulthard leads the race
00:48:06because he would have overtaken Hakkinen.
00:48:08Hakkinen had a 17.6
00:48:10second lead before
00:48:12he made the stop. So Coulthard will
00:48:14be leading the race now but is in
00:48:16this lap. So
00:48:18the strategies are pretty similar as we
00:48:20expected. It's just an incredible pace
00:48:22from Hakkinen. I wondered if Coulthard
00:48:24might be going very, very long but he's not.
00:48:26And well, I think
00:48:28Coulthard clan plus
00:48:30certainly Ferrari are going to be absolutely
00:48:32amazed by the pace that Hakkinen
00:48:34has been able to run. And still not pit
00:48:36until the end of lap 13. Yes and at the
00:48:38end of the previous lap as David
00:48:40Coulthard continues...
00:48:42It turns into the pit lane.
00:48:44There was only 15, 16
00:48:46seconds between him and
00:48:48Michael Schumacher. So Micker
00:48:50Hakkinen is back in the lead. No doubt
00:48:52about that. On to the pit lane
00:48:54speed limiter comes David Coulthard.
00:48:56Up to a stand still.
00:48:58Under him go the jacks. Up goes the
00:49:00car. Off come the wheels. In goes
00:49:02the fuel filler. And the time
00:49:04stop for David Coulthard.

00:49:14end up status quo. Pretty much where it all

00:49:18pit stop was made by the frontrunners
00:49:20of Michael Schumacher. So the only
00:49:22man... Yes, Button has also
00:49:24stopped now. So everybody
00:49:26down to Alexander Wurz
00:49:28in 8th place has made their first
00:49:30stop. So what are the positions?

00:50:04race so far. If he gets a good run through the last
00:50:06corner. He could even be in a one minute
00:50:0819 or something. And remember
00:50:10we know he's just got some fuel dumped
00:50:12on board 2 or 3 laps back. So
00:50:14over the line comes Hakkinen with a
00:50:16120.0 as it happens.
00:50:18That is absolutely
00:50:20amazing. 7 tenths of a second faster
00:50:22than Coulthard's fastest lap last year.

01:13:58so desperately need, no Barrichello just gone past
01:14:00our window, he will take
01:14:024th position easily so
01:14:04Barrichello will be in 4th, Häkkinen leads
01:14:06by 20.5 seconds
01:14:08Coulthard is now 2nd

01:14:12having made his 2nd stop of course
01:14:14is away down the road
01:14:16There is Micah Häkkinen coming
01:14:18round to complete the lap
01:14:20just after Ralph Schumacher
01:14:22in the Williams BMW had
01:14:24rejoined the track ahead of
01:14:26Harold Frenson who is in
01:14:286th position, so the
01:14:30Williams BMW is continuing
01:14:32it's absolutely incredible first
01:14:34season in Formula 1 racing
01:14:36Coulthard in the pit this time so
01:14:38Coulthard in for his 2nd stop
01:14:40and really he's not under pressure
01:14:42I think Michael Schumacher had a good enough stop
01:14:44to make sure he stays ahead
01:14:466.6, I don't think it will be enough
01:14:48to get him ahead of Michael Schumacher
01:14:50watching out of the window, it's going to be close
01:14:52There's Schumacher coming down the straight
01:14:54now can Coulthard get past the speed line
01:14:56No he cannot, he's going to slot in
01:14:58just behind, it didn't quite pay off
01:15:00for the McLaren team
01:15:02And that's how close it was, so
01:15:04Michael Schumacher in 2nd position
01:15:06David Coulthard in 3rd
01:15:08position as they were before
01:15:10but the McLaren of course is closer
01:15:12to the Ferrari than it was, it was
01:15:14about 2 seconds behind
01:15:16You can see why these drivers get angry if they get held up
01:15:18Genet who ironically was on an in lap for a
01:15:20stop and go penalty for ignoring
01:15:22the blue flags, you saw him
01:15:24hold Schumacher up
01:15:26David Coulthard up very very badly
01:15:28and this is the result
01:15:30that extra second has cost Coulthard
01:15:32the chance to get in there ahead
01:15:34of the Ferrari, it makes all of the difference
01:15:36a couple of corners behind the back marker
01:15:38can spoil your race
01:15:40and Michael Schumacher maintains
01:15:42track position. And of course that would
01:15:44have given the McLaren team 16
01:15:46World Championship points for 1st and
01:15:482nd places as opposed to 14 for
01:15:501st and 3rd. And the car there
01:15:52was Jacques Villeneuve in the
01:15:54pits from 13th position
01:15:56in the BAR. We're on lap
01:15:5853 out of 77
01:16:0024 laps still to go
01:16:02no battle for the lead because
01:16:04Bikkerhaken is way way way out in front
01:16:06nearly 25 seconds ahead of
01:16:08this terrific battle between
01:16:10Michael Schumacher, the twice
01:16:12World Champion and David
01:16:14Coulthard in the McLaren
01:16:169 times a Grand Prix winner
01:16:18Coulthard's only chance I think of
01:16:20launching past the Ferrari will be
01:16:22in traffic really, he's got to try and
01:16:24catch Michael wrong-footed
01:16:26lapping some cars but we know with the Blue Flag
01:16:28system the majority of the cars
01:16:30more or less drive out of the way so
01:16:32as not to get involved. And I really
01:16:34don't see where Coulthard's got any extra speed
01:16:36to nudge up alongside Michael
01:16:38Schumacher's Ferrari. Hakanen's
01:16:40lead is 43.3 seconds
01:16:42but of course he's yet to stop
01:16:44and Bikkerhaken has
01:16:46lapped everybody up to
01:16:48Ralf Schumacher who is in
01:16:506th position. Jenson Button
01:16:52in the 2nd of the Williams BMWs
01:16:54is only just out of the points
01:16:56his team mate Ralf is 6th
01:16:58Jenson Button is 7th. Hakanen
01:17:00James
01:17:02Bikkerhaken in the pit lane, there shouldn't be too much
01:17:04pressure on this, everybody's doing a pretty slick job
01:17:06these stops have all been earlier than
01:17:08scheduled and it was started by
01:17:10Ferrari trying to get Michael in
01:17:12I think they probably used that Genet situation
01:17:14maybe it was worth a try, I don't know, but it was certainly
01:17:16about 4 or 5 laps earlier than they would normally have
01:17:18brought him in and it did work for Ferrari, it kept them
01:17:20ahead of Coulthard and I have to say
01:17:22the McLaren guys are pretty depressed about it
01:17:24they thought they'd done enough to get their man in front
01:17:26but a nice job there on Hakanen's car
01:17:28he really is looking terrific today, isn't he?
01:17:30And you just saw Pedro Diniz un-lap
01:17:32himself by getting past
01:17:34the end of the pit lane as
01:17:36Mikkerhakenen came out, but the thin wall
01:17:38soon passed the Sauber again
01:17:40and David Coulthard there is
01:17:42right on the gearbox of
01:17:44Michael Schumacher's Ferrari
01:17:46with another 24 laps
01:17:48including the one that they are on
01:17:50to go, and something has
01:17:52got to give, Michael Schumacher
01:17:54under the most terrific pressure
01:17:56a long way behind Mikkerhakenen
01:17:58of course, the continued
01:18:00race leader, and this
01:18:02is the story of the event because
01:18:04these two are some 29
01:18:06seconds ahead of Rubens
01:18:08Barrichello, it's the two Ferraris
01:18:10and the two McLarens occupying
01:18:12the first four places
01:18:14Fredsen is now in fifth position
01:18:16ahead of Ralf Schumacher, there's
01:18:18only five seconds in between them
01:18:20and Ralf Schumacher is
01:18:22going to be lapped by
01:18:24Mikkerhakenen eventually I think
01:18:26but Jenson Button is now
01:18:28un-lapped, he is in seventh
01:18:30position, just one place off
01:18:32a potential World Championship point
01:18:34and Jenson Button has already
01:18:36scored World Championship points
01:18:38four times this
01:18:40year in his first Grand
01:18:42Prix season, a terrific performance
01:18:44both these drivers need
01:18:46that second place, Klugfab can't afford
01:18:48to let Hakenen, his teammate, gain
01:18:50four points on him, and Michael
01:18:52Schumacher wants to minimise, as James
01:18:54said earlier on, damage limitation
01:18:56Hakenen has surprised everybody
01:18:58with his pace, not least Michael Schumacher
01:19:00what he doesn't need is to
01:19:02lose those six points
01:19:04so Schumacher will be hanging on to those
01:19:06for grim death, but in fact
01:19:08also, I don't think either of those two drivers can
01:19:10afford to take a big gamble and a big
01:19:12stab and defend those
01:19:14places too aggressively, they can't afford to lose
01:19:16a wheel against each other, as Hakenen
01:19:18will just be sailing off with ten points
01:19:20advantage. And the great Formula 1 news
01:19:22is it really does look as though yet again
01:19:24the Drivers' World Championship
01:19:26is going to go down to the last race of
01:19:28the year, which for the first time
01:19:30is the Malaysian Grand Prix on
01:19:32October the 22nd, we've got
01:19:34Belgium in two weeks' time on the wonderful
01:19:36Spa circuit, and then the
01:19:38historic Monza circuit for the
01:19:40Italian Grand Prix, a first
01:19:42timer at Indianapolis for the
01:19:44American Grand Prix at the end
01:19:46of September, then Japan and then
01:19:48Malaysia, and we've got the wonderful
01:19:50prospect of this Drivers' World
01:19:52Championship raging right to the
01:19:54end, raging as
01:19:56Schumacher and Coulthard
01:19:58are fighting for that second position on
01:20:00the track. Just to give you the gaps then
01:20:02of the top four, now they've all made their final
01:20:04stop, Hakenen at the end of
01:20:06lap 55 was 21.8
01:20:08seconds ahead of
01:20:10Michael Schumacher, who is half a second
01:20:12ahead of David Coulthard, who is
01:20:1429.2 seconds
01:20:16ahead of Rubens Barrichello.
01:20:18Frentzen in fifth has yet to
01:20:20stop. Over the line they
01:20:22go, they're on lap 56,
01:20:24now look how evenly matched
01:20:26the V10 Ferrari
01:20:28and here in the pits
01:20:30Ricardo Zonta, the
01:20:32Brazilian driver, who's losing his
01:20:34place in the BAR team at
01:20:36the end of this season to Olivier
01:20:38Panis, who is the
01:20:40brilliant French ex-Grand Prix
01:20:42Monaco winner of 1996
01:20:44and is
01:20:46with the McLaren team, not as
01:20:48their test driver, because he's described
01:20:50as their third driver.
01:20:52How many teams have got a
01:20:54previous Grand Prix winner as
01:20:56their test and third driver? Well
01:20:58McLaren have, just one of the many
01:21:00indications of the incredible
01:21:02in-depth quality of the
01:21:04Woking team, and they're
01:21:06on lap 56
01:21:08now. Well, Jenson Button
01:21:10is 12 seconds behind
01:21:12Ralf Schumacher, he's been in the pits
01:21:14for his second stop
01:21:16and out of it, now watch
01:21:18Schumacher, coming towards us
01:21:20is Mika Häkkinen,
01:21:22ahead of Johnny Herbert,
01:21:24both the Jaguars
01:21:26are still running, Eddie Irvine
01:21:28is in 10th place, Johnny Herbert is 13th
01:21:30and we've still only got those
01:21:32three retirements, the two
01:21:34pros of Alessi first, Ben Heidfeld
01:21:36and Giancarlo Fisichella
01:21:38they're on 19, out of the 22
01:21:40still running, as up
01:21:42behind the arrows come Schumacher
01:21:44and Pilfer. Now the bad
01:21:46news for Herbert in the Jaguar, he's now lapped
01:21:48twice, so Johnny down in 13th
01:21:50but two laps, that's
01:21:52just incredible, isn't it? The pace
01:21:54of these Ferraris and McLarens
01:21:56are getting that far ahead, I mean
01:21:58Schumacher's going to lap everybody
01:22:00he's got button necks on his list
01:22:02he's probably going to lap everybody up to
01:22:044th, 4th, 5th, incredible
01:22:06Verstappen
01:22:08I think lost the place, I just tried to work out
01:22:10in my mind whether he was on the same lap
01:22:12but anyway, as Schumacher
01:22:14and Coulthard move through
01:22:16just Verstappen moved over
01:22:18in the arrows and let them
01:22:20through, and into the pits
01:22:22comes the Jordan

01:22:30Now, Ralph Schumacher should have got past him

01:22:34key pit stop of the afternoon, certainly
01:22:36scheduled pit stop anyway, and
01:22:38Ralph is long gone, so Frentzen
01:22:40will come out still in 6th place
01:22:42where was Jenson Button?
01:22:44Yes, indeed
01:22:46he's out of the pits and
01:22:48here is the battle for 2nd
01:22:50Schumacher and
01:22:52Coulthard tied together by that invisible
01:22:54piece of string, coming through the
01:22:56passing the pit lane, turning into
01:22:58the double right hander
01:23:00at turn 14, the
01:23:02180 degree bend, exiting it
01:23:04building up to 180 miles
01:23:06an hour in 6th gear
01:23:08before they break hard, go down
01:23:10through the gears from 6th to 3rd
01:23:12to about 80
01:23:14miles an hour on the apex
01:23:16I agree with all of that
01:23:18except they've got 7 gears now, 7 gears
01:23:20in both the Ferrari and the McLaren
01:23:22top gear and the
01:23:24smoking front tyre there
01:23:26of the back marker ahead
01:23:28in fact the back marker ahead
01:23:30must be Jarno Trulli I would guess
01:23:32Yes, certainly one of the
01:23:34Jordans, very difficult to tell
01:23:36them apart, there's a red spot on the
01:23:38roll bar of
01:23:40Jarno Trulli's Jordan
01:23:42but whether it's Frentzen or Trulli
01:23:44we'll soon see on their
01:23:4658th lap
01:23:48So I'm
01:23:50pleased at the reliability
01:23:52in this race
01:23:54the Prost season
01:23:56of misfortune goes from
01:23:58bad to worse race by race
01:24:00there are very strong
01:24:02rumours that the Prost team has
01:24:04been sold already
01:24:06to a new consortium
01:24:08what they will make of it
01:24:10with the team in France
01:24:12when Alain Prost himself is believed
01:24:14to have wanted to move it to
01:24:16Britain because the infrastructure
01:24:18is so much stronger there
01:24:20remains to be seen, I don't even know
01:24:22that the rumour is absolutely right
01:24:24all I do know is that Alain Prost
01:24:26himself is in a state of virtual
01:24:28despair. Yes I believe it's
01:24:30Frentzen that they're homing in
01:24:32on but look, it is Trulli
01:24:34it really is Trulli
01:24:36Coulthard ever closer
01:24:38just 4 tenths of a second
01:24:40as Trulli gets out of the way
01:24:42and well I'm amazed how easily
01:24:44Coulthard can stay that close
01:24:46in the slipstream but surely
01:24:48there's no way you're going to have
01:24:50so much more horsepower to pull
01:24:52alongside down the straight
01:24:54that it just isn't going to happen
01:24:56Trulli in 8th position has just been
01:24:58lapped as you saw and Pedro
01:25:00Diniz behind him in the
01:25:02Sauber took the opportunity to
01:25:04close up a bit. Pedro Diniz
01:25:06going better than his team mate
01:25:08who out qualified him
01:25:10I've been making some complimentary remarks
01:25:12about the Sauber recently
01:25:14it's very much improved under it's new
01:25:16designer, the Argentine
01:25:18Sergio Rinland
01:25:20who's got a good team
01:25:22with him at Hinwill in Switzerland
01:25:24they're dramatically improving
01:25:26the performance of the Sauber
01:25:28with it's Ferrari Petronas
01:25:30labelled engine
01:25:32just to tell you how far ahead
01:25:34Hakkinen is in real terms
01:25:36it's 26.4 on the track
01:25:38but I heard in the very evocative
01:25:40sound of this McLaren, the exhaust pipes
01:25:42are very close together when they exit the car
01:25:44very very distinctive sound
01:25:46Hakkinen went past our comedy box
01:25:48a long long time ago
01:25:50and only now are we seeing Schumacher
01:25:52and Kulthard onto the pit
01:25:54straight, still the gap is
01:25:5626.4 seconds to
01:25:58the leader and 0.6 between
01:26:00them that time over the timing beam
01:26:02You know, David
01:26:04Kulthard has driven in 36
01:26:06Grand Prix less than
01:26:08Michael Schumacher
01:26:10He came into Formula 1
01:26:12in the Williams team
01:26:14and he still says
01:26:16that he's got the best ahead of him
01:26:18he's getting better and better year by year
01:26:20when you think that this is
01:26:22his 102nd
01:26:24Grand Prix
01:26:26and Michael Schumacher is on his
01:26:28138th Grand Prix in this race
01:26:30and he's finished on the podium
01:26:32in more than 50%
01:26:34of those events
01:26:36Do you think David Kulthard has got a lot
01:26:38of potential to improve?
01:26:40I don't think, I mean they've all done enough Grand Prix
01:26:42I don't think it makes any difference
01:26:44now at this stage, I know Kulthard will be
01:26:46very disappointed if he ends up
01:26:48third in this race, I think he'll feel
01:26:50he wasted an opportunity because he appeared to
01:26:52have the legs on this man Hakkinen
01:26:54through free practice
01:26:56and right through qualifying
01:26:58indeed the warm up this morning
01:27:00I think Kulthard will feel this is very much
01:27:02a lost opportunity
01:27:04and Michael Schumacher will be somewhat
01:27:06shell-shocked to say the least
01:27:08when he gets out of the car at the end
01:27:10as Johnny Herbert recovers onto the
01:27:12track in the Jaguar
01:27:14from 13th position
01:27:16he's in as Jenson Button
01:27:18comes through to lap him
01:27:20so Herbert having a nightmare
01:27:22Jenson Button maintaining
01:27:24his progress as I said earlier on
01:27:26I have every reason
01:27:28to believe that he has now actually
01:27:30signed to drive for Benetton
01:27:32next year
01:27:34I think the Williams team are going to be very sorry
01:27:36to see him go in a way because
01:27:38they've got the embarrassment of riches
01:27:40with Juan Pablo Montoya
01:27:42the Colombian driver who went
01:27:44so well in Formula 3000
01:27:46that is Jacques Villeneuve going through
01:27:48and Johnny Herbert spinning
01:27:50this is a replay, so Villeneuve
01:27:52moving up from 14th to 13th
01:27:54I didn't see whether they touched
01:27:56I think Johnny just sort of fell off in sympathy
01:27:58to a certain extent, I think Jacques probably
01:28:00surprised him a little up the inside there
01:28:02and looked a touch
01:28:04unnecessary that spin but Johnny
01:28:06clearly just lost the back of the car when he least needed to
01:28:08and swapped ends and wasn't
01:28:10looking down the track. So where are
01:28:12the battles on the track?
01:28:14Certainly not there. Mikko Häkkinen
01:28:16on his 62nd lap
01:28:18well here is one of the battles
01:28:20the most notable battle which has now been
01:28:22raging for a long long time, the battle for
01:28:24second place between Schumacher
01:28:26and Coulthard as they come through
01:28:28to complete their 62nd lap
01:28:30out of 77 in total
01:28:32there is a battle between
01:28:34Jarno Trolli and Pedro Diniz
01:28:36for 8th place on the grid
01:28:38and Eddie Irvine is up there too
01:28:40because Irvine in 10th position
01:28:42is actually closing slightly on
01:28:44Pedro Diniz in 9th place
01:28:46in the Sauber
01:28:48there is a bit of a battle going on between
01:28:50Micka Salo in 11th place

01:30:20we saw it in Silverstone a couple of years ago
01:30:22Malaysia last year
01:30:24and of course in Manicore this year
01:30:26where Coulthard has no fear
01:30:28of having a go at Michael but he's got to get close
01:30:30enough first. Michael is all
01:30:32too well aware of that but neither of these
01:30:34pair can afford as I said earlier
01:30:36to be knocked out of this race with

01:30:40well you remember at the beginning of this season
01:30:42McLaren clearly had a reliability
01:30:44problem. It's a very
01:30:46sophisticated and advanced
01:30:48packaging with all the elements
01:30:50tucked inside that enveloping
01:30:52streamlined bodywork and they
01:30:54had trouble getting it all absolutely
01:30:56right working properly. Well they've
01:30:58certainly done that with a vengeance now
01:31:00they've had off the top of my head
01:31:02four first and second places
01:31:04this year. They could well end up
01:31:06with a fifth one this year
01:31:08and of course you get a maximum
01:31:10of 16 World Championship points
01:31:12if you do that. 10 for first
01:31:14position, 6 for second position
01:31:16Schumacher coming through, crossing
01:31:18the grid. This is the start
01:31:20of his 64th lap and
01:31:22down in the garages, James Allen
01:31:24has news for us. Murray I don't think this is going to make
01:31:26me very popular around Woking but I think
01:31:28McLaren actually have made a mistake here. I think they've put
01:31:30Coulthard in a more risky position than they needed
01:31:32to. He came in, he could have done about another
01:31:34six laps on the fuel that he had
01:31:36Now Michael Schumacher came in
01:31:38and instinctively McLaren reacted in the following
01:31:40lap they brought Coulthard in but I think
01:31:42he's got the pace in this car. He could have gone
01:31:44four or five laps further and built himself
01:31:46a margin in order to stop so I'm sure
01:31:48there'll be a post-mortem about it afterwards but
01:31:50perhaps although they've done a great job for Hacking at the front
01:31:52maybe with DC they've not done such a good job
01:31:54Be fearless James, speak the
01:31:56truth where you find it and so
01:31:58we're looking at Michael
01:32:00Schumacher now and
01:32:02what can
01:32:04David do? I mean
01:32:06he can just look for
01:32:08Schumacher coming up to a car he's about to
01:32:10lap and hope that there'll be some hesitation
01:32:12He's got two choices, one he can
01:32:14try and penalise any mistakes
01:32:16or being wrong-footed
01:32:18on Michael Schumacher's part in the traffic
01:32:20or he can bide his time through the middle
01:32:22of the lap, this section, stay as
01:32:24close as possible and then get
01:32:26very close in the last corner
01:32:28aerodynamics allowing and the
01:32:30only serious overtaking opportunity
01:32:32is into the first corner
01:32:34we saw Mansell take centre there
01:32:36we've seen
01:32:38Damon Hill took Michael Schumacher
01:32:40there in 1997
01:32:42when the arrows was on the better
01:32:44Bridgestone tyres, that's Diniz dropping out
01:32:46of the race, our fourth retirement in
01:32:4865 laps, amazing
01:32:50reliability, but
01:32:52so there is a way through into that first
01:32:54corner, it's a bit nip and tuck when you get there
01:32:56but somehow you've got to stay close enough
01:32:58Murray in that last corner and that's
01:33:00Coulthard's problem. Yes and
01:33:02of course we had that marvellous attack
01:33:04between Mansell and Senna
01:33:06at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona
01:33:08with sparks flying from underneath
01:33:10their cars, one of the most exciting
01:33:12television sequences I've ever
01:33:14seen of Formula 1
01:33:16and they're coming up behind the Williams
01:33:18now and past them
01:33:20past the Williams of
01:33:22Jenson Button down there
01:33:24in seventh position, he backed off
01:33:26and let them through, lost a bit of time of course
01:33:28in the process and he was right up with
01:33:30Frenson. Now he's 36 seconds
01:33:32behind Frenson, I've been watching his times
01:33:34a bit, he's dropped away quite badly so
01:33:36Jenson, I think some kind
01:33:38of drama's inside that Williams
01:33:40remember at one point he was just 2.7
01:33:42behind Frenson in sixth, he's still
01:33:44in seventh place but now 36
01:33:46seconds away so Button
01:33:48struggling for whatever reason. Yes and
01:33:50it wasn't Frenson either
01:33:52it was the Minardi. So
01:33:54absolutely together
01:33:56carving their way through the traffic
01:33:58Schumacher, Ferrari
01:34:00Coulthard, McLaren
01:34:02second and third places, absolutely
01:34:04nothing in it. They're
01:34:06closing up a bit on Mika Häkkinen
01:34:08at about the rate of two tenths
01:34:10of a second a lap but of course
01:34:12Mika Häkkinen has now got
01:34:14a 27 second lead
01:34:16the victory for the
01:34:18third time this year is very
01:34:20much in the bag for the Finn
01:34:22if he can just keep going
01:34:24the way he is going now.
01:34:26He's not going to have a problem with maintaining
01:34:28concentration, he's used to that
01:34:30he's already won in Spain and Austria
01:34:32he's had five second places
01:34:34this year and
01:34:36if he finishes where he is now
01:34:38Mika Häkkinen who won
01:34:40the World Championship last year
01:34:42and in 1998 will be leading
01:34:44it in 2000. Yes and you can see
01:34:46why he'll be leading it, he finished second
01:34:48in France, first in
01:34:50Austria, second in Germany
01:34:52then previous three Grands Prix and
01:34:54that's the replay of Diniz dropping out
01:34:56of the race earlier on
01:34:58and then Häkkinen leading again now
01:35:00it'll be a first second
01:35:02first to first, something along those lines
01:35:04for Häkkinen, thrusting into
01:35:06the lead in the championship, nobody believed
01:35:08he could really attack for
01:35:10a third consecutive season.
01:35:12No, because as I say
01:35:14the motivation, if you've done it
01:35:16twice, World Champion, and of course
01:35:18they spend all the summer
01:35:20travelling from Grand Prix to Grand Prix
01:35:22and when they're not racing in a Grand
01:35:24Prix they are testing, they'll
01:35:26probably go straight from here to go test
01:35:28in another country tomorrow
01:35:30when they're not racing or testing
01:35:32they're doing sponsorship work
01:35:34and in the winter they're off to places like
01:35:36China and South America
01:35:38it is a non-stop, very
01:35:40very pressured life for Grand Prix

01:38:26the Jaguar has he kept the engine running he clearly has from the ways
01:38:31looking up the track but the question is who is going to be second because
01:38:36Schumacher and Coulthard are still absolutely together ahead of Rubens
01:38:41Barrichello who is fourth, Ralf Schumacher who is fifth and Frentzen who is sixth.
01:38:45Terrifying place to spin where Johnny was right on the racing line just over
01:38:49the blind crest into turn one I think the Jaguar is sounding a little sick
01:38:53last time past but Johnny yeah I think he's struggling a bit some kind of
01:38:59mechanical gremlins or did he get a little nerve I think he'd already lost
01:39:02the back end on the downshift frankly before the arrows got very close to the
01:39:07back of him and then you're looking over a little blind crest there with Formula
01:39:11One cars hurtling towards you. What a good place to be.
01:39:14Good place to be for Mikko Häkkinen on the Hungaro ring at the moment he's on his
01:39:2070th lap. David Coulthard I can't see him getting past Michael Schumacher
01:39:26unless the Ferrari has a problem or unless Schumacher is delayed by traffic.
01:39:32Yes I think in a straight fight Coulthard's got the faster car at the moment of
01:39:35those two but nowhere near fast enough to have any way of getting close enough
01:39:41to the Ferrari and having a go into a corner he's probably got a tenth or two
01:39:45in his pocket but with the aerodynamic effects it's invisible but it's it's
01:39:49he's just about the distance behind where he's getting the worst effect of
01:39:53the turbulent air from the Ferrari. Don't know what Michael Schumacher's problem
01:39:57has been he has clearly had one throughout the race but if he can stay
01:40:01where he is it's going to minimize it from his point of view it means that the
01:40:05World Championship lead is going to change but it means that instead of
01:40:10Schumacher being two points ahead of Häkkinen and Coulthard he's going to be two
01:40:15points behind Häkkinen with the Finn taking the World Championship lead for
01:40:19the first time and Michael and David Coulthard still very much in the hunt of
01:40:24course. Yes Johnny Herbert just went past the comedy box again with a sick
01:40:28sounding engine. I think he was cutting out as much as anything and that cutting is
01:40:32probably what spun him off in the first corner. He's not making a huge difference to his
01:40:36afternoon he's back down in 14th place two laps behind Coulthard ever present
01:40:41in Schumacher's mirrors 0.5 of a second. Louise what can you tell us? I'm having a fairly quiet afternoon down here in the pits
01:40:47amazing reliability very few cars gone out I've just been to check out what's
01:40:50happening with Jensen he does have a problem he's got a problem with his
01:40:53engine he's not able to run at full power now the team are confident that he
01:40:57will make it to the end of the race without any problem but he is dropping
01:41:00time and Trilly has picked up on this he's suddenly upped his pace Trilly's
01:41:04going to be pushing him hard to try and get that place off him. It's one of the few
01:41:09places in the top ten that Jensen Button hasn't had at the present moment in this superb debut year in Grand Prix Racing.
01:41:17He's had a 6th place he's had an 8th place he's in 7th position at the present moment.
01:41:22Is Fredson going to catch him? Well I don't think so at the present moment but we'll just have to wait and see.
01:41:30Johnny Herbert has stopped. Johnny Herbert is out of the race so unfortunately finally that engine has given up. Johnny dropping out of 14th place.
01:41:40The sister Jaguar Eddie Irvine having a quiet afternoon after that excellent start in 9th place.
01:41:46So we're on lap 72 now and the drivers will know it they're in touch with their
01:41:54pits and garages through the wireless and they're getting boards as well some
01:42:00people say to me why do they have a board as well as the radio sometimes the
01:42:05radio fails you don't hear it it's good confirmation the one thing you never see
01:42:09on your pit board is how many laps to go before you stop and it's obvious of
01:42:12course so you're not telling the teams you're racing with when you're planning
01:42:16how your strategy is running and when you're planning to come in so they give
01:42:20you position your position and how far anybody's in front of you and behind you.
01:42:25Well there's five laps to go as far as the leaders are concerned first second
01:42:30and third McLaren Ferrari McLaren Hakanen Schumacher Coupard Hakanen's
01:42:36lead down to under 20 seconds nothing to worry about from his point of view
01:42:39Rubens Barrichello in the second Ferrari on his way to three world championship
01:42:44points for fourth position Ralph Schumacher in fifth place in the
01:42:49Williams BMW two world championship points Frentzen is sixth Button is seventh
01:42:54Trulli in the second Jordan is still catching Jenson Button at the rate of
01:43:00about half a second a lap and he's some two and a half seconds behind the
01:43:05Williams so it's going to be a very very close thing for seventh position
01:43:11I think Michael's just pacing himself now to make sure he makes no mistakes
01:43:16on the very narrow line that there is around this circuit and not give Coulthard a glimmer of a hope
01:43:21but he'll still have to be pressing on. Yeah it's a very light sandy soil here in
01:43:28Hungary at this part of Hungary and you get an enormous amount of dust you can
01:43:32see from the lighter parts of the circuit that there is still dust in
01:43:36amongst the tarmac and the circuit gets quicker and quicker and more and more
01:43:41rubbered up as the racing laps go by on Friday it's very bad news indeed because
01:43:47there hasn't been any racing here for a full year and typically in the first
01:43:52training session the first practice session on Friday everybody waits for
01:43:55everybody else to go out and wear their tires out first but then as the rubber goes down
01:44:01the lap times come down and the lap speeds go up and bang what was that that
01:44:07was one of the Minardis and it is the Ford V10 engine which has let go and it
01:44:16is Mazzacane the Argentine driver down from 16th position that's only the fifth
01:44:22retirement of the race the two Prosts Fisichella Pedro Diniz who stopped some
01:44:27time ago and now Mazzacane and David Coulthard pressing like mad
01:44:33I wonder if there's any oil down on turn 13 there, it's mostly all being burnt quite clearly there as Mazzacane makes his way around to the exit of the turn
01:44:45and clearly he doesn't appear to be dropping any fluid, just sending it burned out of the exhaust pipe but the tires get very heavily worn in all the Grands Prix
01:44:55they're virtually slicked at the end and that's going to be dramas for next season
01:44:59Michelin are coming in and they're saying we want a clear understanding do these tires have to have grooves in them or not at the end of a race
01:45:07it's fine at the moment everybody's running on Bridgestones and you can't really complain everybody's got the same opportunity
01:45:13but I can see a lot of fast coming next year if cars get to the end of the race and effectively the grooves are worn down, the cars are running on slick tires
01:45:23well just three laps to go at the end of this one and Schumacher is making real inroads into Hakanen's lead now
01:45:30but I'm sure that's as a result of Hakanen slowing down rather than Schumacher speeding up
01:45:35on the previous lap Schumacher was two seconds and of course David Coulthard two seconds faster than Micah Hakanen
01:45:42and as a result of which the lead of Micah Hakanen and the McLaren has come down to about 17 seconds
01:45:48yes and Button's got a problem to defend seventh place, Jarno Trulli now just a few tenths of a second behind him
01:45:54not on your screen but Button under pressure to keep seventh place as Hakanen motors on
01:46:00I'm sure you're right Mario now 1 minute 24.7 on that lap very very slow from Micah Hakanen
01:46:05but I'm sure he's just cruising around now protecting the car in such a large lead
01:46:11and so it is all down to David Coulthard as far as McLaren is concerned
01:46:17they'll be more than happy with yet another victory for Micah Hakanen
01:46:22it'll be his third of the year David Coulthard has already had three
01:46:26so it's going to be the sixth McLaren win this year in this the 12th race of the 2000 season
01:46:33and of course Michael Schumacher has won five times Ruben Barrichello has won five times
01:46:39so it shows you with six wins each how very very well matched the McLaren and the Ferrari cars are
01:46:48so they've dominated victories no other team has had a sniff of a victory in the year 2000
01:46:56here is Jarno Trulli on the right darting out from behind Jenson Button Williams
01:47:02to move ahead and up into seventh position
01:47:06so now the Jordans are sixth Frentzen and seventh Trulli and Trulli has been lapped
01:47:11yes it was a clear pass on the straight and as Luis said he was struggling gentlemen
01:47:16struggling to get full engine power and while we saw it clearly for ourselves
01:47:20didn't we truly literally just drove past him in what is a very short pit straight
01:47:25Micah Hakanen on his 76th lap coming towards us the Ferrari
01:47:30very much changed from last year's incidentally to the casual onlooker it looks virtually identical
01:47:36but the nose configuration is different the side pods are different the diffuser is different
01:47:41the rear wings are different there's a change in the driving position
01:47:45the engine has got a lot of changes to it and its performance this year
01:47:50it's much improved performance is down not to Michael Schumacher and it's not down to Ross Brawn
01:47:56it's down to a man we mention very seldom South African Rory Byrne
01:48:01the ex-designer of the Tolman and Benetton teams who moved with Ross Brawn to Ferrari
01:48:08and has helped bring them back to the top well done Rory Byrne
01:48:12still 5, 6 tenths behind Jenson Button's got a problem down the field
01:48:16he'll now have Eddie Irvine lining up to pass him on the pit straight
01:48:21he may well lose that eighth position but no points then in store for Jenson Button
01:48:25Johnny Herbert out of the race and for the British fans
01:48:30Kulthar still up there clearly in third place and he can do nothing about this man
01:48:34Michael Schumacher, Schumacher fighting the car oversteering into turn 13
01:48:39still not losing any time still managing to stay very much on the grippy part of the circuit
01:48:45it's little more than two car widths wide the track in effect around here
01:48:50Michael then wrestling the Ferrari for those hard earned six points
01:48:54he needs to stay in touch with Hakanen in points Murray doesn't he
01:48:57he does indeed and here is Micah Hakanen on potentially his victorious last lap
01:49:03in his 140th Grand Prix which would give him his 17th career win
01:49:10and his third win of the year
01:49:13Micah Hakanen started from third on the grid
01:49:17he was absolutely magnificent at the start by taking the lead at the first corner
01:49:22just as he did at Hockenheim in Germany two weeks ago
01:49:26by diving between the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher and his team mate David Kulthar to McLaren
01:49:32it's been a brilliant brilliant copy book victory for Micah Hakanen who is almost home
01:49:37yes but all the signs of the weekend was once he had that now typical start of his
01:49:42he would then be under pressure from Schumacher and Kulthar
01:49:47it took him about three laps to find some grip and some confidence
01:49:50he's been changing that car constantly through the weekend
01:49:53and then he just took off didn't he with a series of laps that they couldn't even begin to look at
01:49:59Micah Hakanen exits the last turn at the Hungaro Ring
01:50:03crosses the line and wins the Hungarian Grand Prix of 2000
01:50:08his third win of the year with Michael Schumacher second for Ferrari
01:50:13reducing the gap between himself and Micah Hakanen a bit by staying ahead of David Kulthar
01:50:20and we look at Rubens of Barrichello
01:50:23so the reliability of both the Ferraris and both the McLarens
01:50:28has made things impossible for any other team to get on the podium
01:50:32the first three places the top non-Ferrari man is going to be Ralf Schumacher in the Williams BMW
01:50:38and better than that he could not have hoped to do
01:50:41Hakanen scored 32 points out of a possible 40 in the last four Grand Prix's
01:50:48that's pretty much what you'd call a world championship charge isn't it
01:50:52and well who can stop him he's got so much confidence from the last two years
01:50:56knowing he can pull it out of the bag at the end
01:50:58and he leaps into the lead of the championship with a performance that was just mesmerizing
01:51:03yeah and there's still only six world championship points between the top three
01:51:09Micah Hakanen moves into the lead of the world championship by displacing Michael Schumacher
01:51:14who's down to second place
01:51:16and David Kulthar is still very much in for a shout of the world championship
01:51:20because he's only six points behind Micah Hakanen
01:51:24and there are still 50 potential world championship points to be won
01:51:30yes and when Kulthar sees that six points when it's all listed in front of him
01:51:35he'll think about Brazil where he lost those six points
01:51:38so but I think this is pretty much the end of Barrichello's championship charge this afternoon in many ways
01:51:44he's 44 seconds off the lead off of Hakanen as he went over the line
01:51:49but Barrichello now crucially 13 points behind Michael Schumacher
01:51:54and I think that will prevent him unless something bizarre happens in the next two races
01:51:59will prevent him having to do anything other than support Schumacher
01:52:02well it's been a great day for the Woking team, for McLaren
01:52:06because they I think move into the lead in the Constructors' Championship
01:52:10as well as having Micah Hakanen take the lead in the Drivers' Championship
01:52:14incidentally I hypothesize that Fisichella might lose his fifth place to Ralf Schumacher
01:52:19he hasn't but he's only two points ahead
01:52:21and listen to the enormous Finnish content at the grandstand here
01:52:26going mad with delight blowing their airhorns, waving their flags
01:52:31because their man Micah Hakanen has won in Hungary in front of them in their enormous numbers
01:52:38yes if Micah Hakanen ever wins this race in a Ferrari you'll need earplugs to be in the crowd
01:52:43not in the racing cars because everybody outside in our grandstands have either got red caps on
01:52:49or they're waving the Finnish flag
01:52:51the Hungarian Grand Prix, you're looking at the winner now
01:52:55he finished 7.9 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher
01:52:59here he is, which showed how much Micah Hakanen slowed down on the last lap
01:53:04Schumacher just half a second ahead of David Coulthard
01:53:07but that made two World Championship points difference
01:53:10which may make all the difference in the end
