00:00:00It's the United States Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
00:00:07A brand new experience for the 200,000 plus crowd.
00:00:11It is very nearly time for those gentlemen to start their engines.
00:00:15Some big tactical decisions to be made.
00:00:18Here's Martin Brundle and first of all it's Murray. Murray Walker.
00:00:22Welcome Formula 1 race fans to Indianapolis.
00:00:26And you know I never thought I'd say that.
00:00:28I feel a bit like a starving man in Harrods Food Hall and it's great.
00:00:33It's an excellent circuit.
00:00:36The facilities are absolutely stupefying.
00:00:38The crowd is mega enthusiastic.
00:00:41The atmosphere is fabulous.
00:00:43But let us not forget that this is a World Championship event.
00:00:48Two World Championship leaders on the front row.
00:00:51There he is. Mika Hakkinen, 80 points.
00:00:54Alongside him, Michael Schumacher, 78 points.
00:00:58Mika Hakkinen is on the second row of the grid.
00:01:02David Coulthard up there with Michael Schumacher.
00:01:05And let's not forget that twice this year Mika Hakkinen has burst through
00:01:10from the second row of the grid to take the lead at the first corner.
00:01:14You heard what Adrian Reynard was saying about tyres.
00:01:18They're going to be absolutely critical here.
00:01:20The circuit is still damp.
00:01:22And this morning, Jacques Villeneuve, who knows this circuit better than most,
00:01:27after all he's won the Indy 500, said half the track is dry
00:01:31and that's where the banking is.
00:01:33And the rest stays humid and wet the whole time.
00:01:36So dry tyres don't work and wet tyres overheat.
00:01:40It is a big dilemma for them.
00:01:42Yes, they were blistering left rears in just one lap this morning.
00:01:46I think I would start on slicks but I haven't had the experience
00:01:49of going through that infield.
00:01:51I suspect quite a lot of the drivers are going to go wet.
00:01:54There could well be a mixture on the grid.
00:01:56And whatever happens, I believe we're going to see pretty early pit stops
00:02:01for those that do start on wet tyres.
00:02:03It's a question of how far they can go before they have to do that.
00:02:07But with 3G through the banking, this is just a whole different scenario.
00:02:10There's quite a lot of camber even on that pit straight.
00:02:13So that's why it dries so quickly there.
00:02:15We've said it's a circuit of two halves in terms of speed and set-up
00:02:19through the weekend.
00:02:21But that's also turned out to be exactly the same with the weather conditions
00:02:26because, as you can see, the pit straight there is virtually bone dry now.
00:02:30As I was standing down there, it was literally drying in front of your eyes.
00:02:34There's a little bit of heat bursting through now.
00:02:36So I'm just having a look to see what the track temperature is.
00:02:39Just 12 degrees, mind you.
00:02:41Now, we saw yesterday the cut-off point was 1 minute 24
00:02:45before they had to come in for slick tyres.
00:02:48It looked the same this morning, except it was so damp and cold
00:02:51that the track would not dry out.
00:02:54And Michael Schumacher went out on a set of slicks late on
00:02:59and was some 7 or 8 seconds off the pace.
00:03:02So it's very difficult, Murray, for them to choose the correct moment
00:03:06to come in and make that pit stop.
00:03:08Yeah, track temperature is just about 1 degree cooler than it was this morning.
00:03:13But, you know, it's a funny thing to say, but the weather conditions
00:03:16for this race look to me to be absolutely ideal for America.
00:03:20Let's make no bones about it.
00:03:21There's Giano Trulli on wet weather tyres.
00:03:24Let's make no bones about it.
00:03:26Formula 1 wants to impress America.
00:03:29America is not used to cars racing in the wet on the ovals.
00:03:34They always stop the race or they don't start it if it's wet
00:03:38and understandably so when you're turning left at 220 miles an hour all the time.
00:03:44And if you break away, you're going to be in real trouble.
00:03:46But in Formula 1, they could be seeing a wet-dry race,
00:03:49a great introduction for America.
00:03:51Well, this enormous crowd has never seen a standing start
00:03:54with regard to this circuit especially.
00:03:56Or, of course, any running in the wet.
00:03:58They don't run here in the rain.
00:03:59They just all go home and come back the next day on the super speedway itself.
00:04:03And looking out of our window here, Murray,
00:04:05I can't see a single car on dry tyres in the first 10, 12 that I can see.
00:04:12All are carrying wet tyres as you saw there on Michael Schumacher's Ferrari.
00:04:16Apparently, Johnny Herbert down the field is on slicks.
00:04:20But he can afford to take a risk in that respect
00:04:22because he's back in 19th place on the grid.
00:04:26So those wet tyres are going to take some serious punishment.
00:04:29Right up to the first corner, the right-hander turn 1.
00:04:33It's a sharp 90 degree like Monza but much further away.
00:04:36And this is where they turn off the super speedway
00:04:39running in the opposite direction to the Indy 500.
00:04:41Turn 2.
00:04:42Now, there's a lot...
00:04:43Turn 3 is the right-hander which keeps going right-handed up into turn 4.
00:04:48And they're doing about 75 miles an hour there.
00:04:51Then they sprint up to about 140 on that little short straight
00:04:55with Michael Schumacher leading.
00:04:57Now they're coming up to the double 90 at turn 6.
00:05:01There it is.
00:05:02And they're taking that at about 70 miles an hour, I guess.
00:05:06Up to the second fastest part of the course now.
00:05:09Hullman Boulevard, named after the great Hullman family
00:05:12that have pushed Indy on so far.
00:05:15Building up to some 185 miles an hour as they turn into turn 8.
00:05:21Parade lap.
00:05:22Schumacher, Coulthard, Häkkinen, Barrichello, Jarno Trulli,
00:05:27Jensen Button and excellent 6th on the grid, don't forget.
00:05:31Now they're coming up to that banked turn.
00:05:34They will hit it in race conditions at about 155 miles an hour.
00:05:38Still accelerating for turn 13.
00:05:41185 miles an hour.
00:05:45It hasn't been the problem people expected it to be
00:05:48because all the loadings on the tyres and suspension are equally spread.
00:05:53But they then come out onto the long straight past Tower Terrace.
00:05:59210 miles an hour before they get up to turn 1.
00:06:03And just look at the crowd there.
00:06:06It's absolutely massive.
00:06:08I've been here for the Indy 500 when there were over 400,000 people.
00:06:13There's about 250,000 here today.
00:06:16By far the biggest Formula 1 crowd that I've ever seen.
00:06:20Even bigger than Hungary, the first year that we ever had it.
00:06:23And it's coming up to climax time.
00:06:25Yes, and it looks right. I wonder if it'd feel like being at a disco
00:06:29with not enough people there.
00:06:30Just 250,000 people in a 400-odd-thousand-seater stadium.
00:06:34But it doesn't work out that way.
00:06:35We're using about two-thirds of the actual facility
00:06:39and it feels just great.
00:06:41But a start here on wet tyres, on a dry track.
00:06:44Where do you brake into the first corner on wet tyres and a dry track?
00:06:49So a lot of unknowns for everybody sitting out there.
00:06:52And this is a tough one for young Jenson Button too.
00:06:55This is going to be a very strange first few laps of this Grand Prix, Murray.
00:07:0073 laps. Michael Schumacher on the right.
00:07:03David Coulthard on the left.
00:07:05One light, two lights, three lights.
00:07:08And the American Grand Prix is...
00:07:12Go!
00:07:14Coulthard jumped the start.
00:07:15Coulthard will get a jump-start penalty for sure.
00:07:17He was rolling a long time before the lights,
00:07:20so he's in the lead at the moment.
00:07:22But I'm absolutely sure Coulthard jumped the start.
00:07:25And look at Barrichello attacking Hackett.
00:07:27But it's Michael Schumacher.
00:07:29If Martin is right, effectively in the lead.
00:07:32David Coulthard in front at the present moment.
00:07:34Schumacher second, Hackett in third.
00:07:36Barrichello in fourth position.
00:07:38Where he started, Jarno Trulli is still in fifth place.
00:07:41In sixth position, Jenson Button has held his place.
00:07:44But Jacques Villeneuve has come up ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
00:07:48it looks to me.
00:07:49And the young Canadian who has won here at Indy
00:07:53is making a colossal fight of it as they come into Holman Boulevard.
00:07:57And Johnny Herbert on those slick tires is last.
00:08:00Absolutely plum last, I believe now.
00:08:02So certainly those wets are doing the job in these early stages.
00:08:06But how long will they last?
00:08:08And yeah, jump-start under investigation.
00:08:12David Coulthard is being investigated by the stewards of the meeting.
00:08:16They will be looking at tapes of the start there
00:08:19to decide whether David has jumped it.
00:08:22If he has, as Martin said, of course he's going to have a penalty.
00:08:25Yes, I don't think they'll have to look at the tapes very long, unfortunately.
00:08:28Coulthard was definitely rolling as the lights changed.
00:08:31So that is a bit of a false lead for him at the moment.
00:08:34But he's very, very fast through the first part of this lap.
00:08:37Look at the cars moving around on that banking.
00:08:40The tires squirm under that load.
00:08:42They're there to clear the water, not to lean on a 180-mile-an-hour long, long corner.
00:08:48And who is the fastest man on the track
00:08:50as the Jordan there comes out and takes Ralf Schumacher?
00:08:55Frentzen passes Schumacher. That's for eighth place.
00:08:58Frentzen then whistling up the inside into Turn 1.
00:09:01You're going to see a lot of that this afternoon.
00:09:03They're carrying a lot of wind.
00:09:04But they can follow through those last two fast corners
00:09:07and get a tremendous slipstream on their way down to Turn 1.
00:09:11926 metres is the first pit straight.
00:09:15And who has got the wing loadings and the tyre-fuel combinations right?
00:09:21We've got a long way to see.
00:09:22We're on lap 2.
00:09:23David Coulthard still in front.
00:09:25Is he going to be penalised?
00:09:26Michael Schumacher is second.
00:09:28Look at that.
00:09:29Watch Coulthard on the left there, getting away early.
00:09:33Schumacher tucks in behind him.
00:09:36Mika Häkkinen remains second.
00:09:38And Rubens Barrichello fourth.
00:09:40But it may well be that Barrichello is effectively coming up to third position.
00:09:44There we are.
00:09:45There is confirmation.
00:09:46It looks absolutely, without doubt to me,
00:09:49that David Coulthard and both Jenson Button and Jarno Trulli have been off on the grass
00:09:57as we look again at the start.
00:10:00We're on lap 2.
00:10:01David Coulthard is 1.2 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher at the present moment.
00:10:07Mika Häkkinen in third position.
00:10:10As you look down at turn 1, the McLaren leading the Ferrari.
00:10:16The Scotsman leading the German.
00:10:18There is the Scotsman.
00:10:19David Coulthard, two times a pole position holder this year.
00:10:24Third in the World Championship at the present moment.
00:10:2719 points behind.
00:10:28And into the pits comes Jenson Button.
00:10:31He started in sixth position.
00:10:34Now, is this a tyre change?
00:10:35Yes, indeed it is.
00:10:37And right behind him is Hans-Harald Frentzen.
00:10:42Yes, a puncture there.
00:10:43So that's truly him with a left rear puncture.
00:10:46I wonder if Button had a problem.
00:10:48Button has now left the pits.
00:10:50So it may be tactical from Jenson Button.
00:10:52We think he went off the road.
00:10:54Maybe he's decided to come in for slicks.
00:10:57We haven't seen it on screen, but Button did go off the road.
00:11:01Now, whether he's collected a lot of grass in the radiator ducting, I don't know.
00:11:05And whether they put slicks on, I'm sure we'll find out very shortly.
00:11:08So here are the top ten.
00:11:10David Coulthard now 1.7 seconds ahead of the battle between Michael Schumacher
00:11:15and Micah Hakkinen, the two championship leaders.
00:11:18With Rubens Barrichello there in fourth position.
00:11:21Look back for Jacques Fielder, who is in fifth position now.
00:11:26He's fought his way up ahead of Hans-Harald Frentzen.
00:11:29Ralf Schumacher is seventh.
00:11:31Zonta is eighth.
00:11:32Then it's Deniz and Jasper stepping in the arrows.
00:11:35Excellent.
00:11:36Yes, I think Fisichella may have jumped to start as well.
00:11:38Now looking up, we've got car 2 and 11 under investigation by the stewards at this early stage.
00:11:44Coulthard extremely eager to get away.
00:11:47And, well, when they... I thought I saw it out of the corner of my eye,
00:11:50but when they showed it in slow-mo, very clear,
00:11:53Coulthard was rolling when the lights changed.
00:11:55Martin, why on earth have we had a decision already?
00:11:58You've seen the tapes. I've seen the tapes.
00:12:00The stewards can see the tapes. Why haven't they said something?
00:12:03They've got 20 minutes to notify the team,
00:12:05and the team then have three laps maximum before they must pull the driver in.
00:12:10So they'll have to... Coulthard needs to get as far out front,
00:12:13they need to leave it as long as they can before they bring him in
00:12:17so that he doesn't have too much of a penalty.
00:12:19Remember, in Canada, when Coulthard's car stalled on the line,
00:12:23and he got a stop-and-go penalty there, it cost him very, very dearly.
00:12:27And it'll be just the same this afternoon,
00:12:29despite that 1.7-second lead he's got at the moment.
00:12:33Well, Michael Schumacher is lapping within a few hundredths of a second
00:12:36at the same speed as David Coulthard.
00:12:38He will, of course, almost certainly have been told by Ross Brawn,
00:12:42his team chief on the pit lane,
00:12:45that David Coulthard is under investigation.
00:12:47Schumacher will be keeping in touch with David Coulthard,
00:12:50hoping, no doubt, that he is going to be pulled in
00:12:53and that Schumacher will be able to take the lead.
00:12:55Mika Häkkinen is now nearly two seconds behind Michael Schumacher,
00:13:00and you can see that Schumacher is closing inexorably
00:13:04on the leading McLaren of David Coulthard,
00:13:07with Barry Kello now four seconds behind the race leader.
00:13:10Hans-Harald Frentzen is the man to watch at the present moment.
00:13:14He's in sixth position, but he's closing on Jacques Villeneuve,
00:13:17who is fifth, looking back down Holmen Boulevard,
00:13:20which is absolutely clear at the present moment.
00:13:23Lacey in the pits. Now, he's always one of the first.
00:13:26Look, Schumacher getting very, very close to Coulthard.
00:13:28As I said, Coulthard blistering rear tyres very early this morning.
00:13:32Lacey is often the first to be brave to come in for a set of slicks.
00:13:36He's the best on a damp track.
00:13:38Go, go! Michael's going... Sorry, Martin.
00:13:41No worries. Michael there having a look.
00:13:43He looked close enough, but I think the camera angle there
00:13:46was a bit deceiving us,
00:13:48but Michael clearly with the faster car underneath him,
00:13:52and Coulthard's job, really, with his...
00:13:54I'm sure he knows he's going to get a stop, goes well,
00:13:57is to keep Michael behind him as long as he can
00:13:59and give Hakkinen the chance to get in the hunt.
00:14:03So Coulthard's best thing he can do for the team now
00:14:06is let Hakkinen come into the hunt.
00:14:08Yeah, this is lap five, and when are the stewards going to say
00:14:12whatever they're going to say to Ron Dennis, boss of McLaren?
00:14:17David Coulthard watching his mirrors,
00:14:19putting himself in a position where he's going to make it
00:14:21very difficult for Michael Schumacher to get through,
00:14:24but Schumacher attacks.
00:14:25He's going to try and go round the outside at turn one.
00:14:27He apparently doesn't know that David Coulthard
00:14:30is under investigation,
00:14:31and look at the way that the German is fighting.
00:14:34Sawing left, sawing right, almost cutting the gearbox
00:14:37of David Coulthard's McLaren in half
00:14:39as they go into the right-hander at turn four.
00:14:41For sure, all three drivers at the front there
00:14:44will know of Coulthard's predicament.
00:14:46They have not declared he did manage to stop the car completely,
00:14:50but he was rolling before the lights,
00:14:52so they'll take a view on that.
00:14:54They've got a graph that'll be printed up on a computer of exactly...
00:14:57And look, Hakkinen getting a run up the inside there of Schumacher.
00:15:01I must say that David Coulthard is doing a masterly job,
00:15:04irrespective of what he thinks his future is going to be,
00:15:07because he's making it mighty difficult for Michael Schumacher.
00:15:10I do believe that if Schumacher could get past him,
00:15:13he could get away from him,
00:15:14but he can't get past him, and now he's got a big, big worry.
00:15:17He's got to, A, try to get past Coulthard,
00:15:20B, stop Hakkinen from getting past him.
00:15:22You're looking at the first, second, and third.
00:15:24There is 1.2 seconds,
00:15:26and the Ferrari pits are getting ready to bring somebody in.
00:15:29Is it Michael Schumacher?
00:15:32I guess it's more likely to be Schumacher than Barrichello,
00:15:35because Barrichello is all by himself,
00:15:38but it may well be the Brazilian.
00:15:40Barrichello is in the pits. He's out of that picture.
00:15:42Look, he should be in the back of that shot we just saw,
00:15:45so Barrichello will be coming into the pit lane,
00:15:47and look at the toe that Michael Schumacher's got this side.
00:15:50Coulthard goes to cover the line.
00:15:52Schumacher goes down the outside, and they just about touch,
00:15:55and once again, oh, they're so close.
00:15:58Oh, yes! Fantastic!
00:16:00And the crowd has gone berserk.
00:16:02They might well be Italians rather than Americans.
00:16:06They appreciated that.
00:16:07They love to see a fight, and, my gosh, they got one.
00:16:10And now I bet Coulthard will move over and let Hakkinen through.
00:16:14Yes, that's exactly what he's done.
00:16:16He's done his job as best he could,
00:16:18knowing that he's under investigation.
00:16:20He's held Schumacher up as long as he has that could.
00:16:23The German has fought past him brilliantly.
00:16:25Hakkinen has taken over the attack now,
00:16:27and I'm expecting Coulthard, if the stewards say,
00:16:31thumbs down, to be in shortly.
00:16:33Yes, it was very, very brave by Michael Schumacher,
00:16:36and I have to say, Coulthard making life as difficult as he could,
00:16:39he played it fair.
00:16:40It would have been awful if Coulthard had bumped Schumacher out of there.
00:16:44It would not be the correct thing to do.
00:16:46That's not the sort of thing David would do,
00:16:48but he sure is going to make it as hard as he can.
00:16:51And Schumacher putting an enormous amount of faith in David Coulthard there
00:16:56with his championship chances.
00:16:58Incredible. Look at this.
00:16:59Squeezes Coulthard across the curve.
00:17:01They must have touched.
00:17:02That was so close.
00:17:04Oh, now, listen, the fastest man on the track at the moment
00:17:07is Johnny Herbert down in 16th position in the Jaguar.
00:17:11He must have changed tires. Indeed, he has changed tires.
00:17:14No, he started on the dries.
00:17:16Remember, the conditions are getting right,
00:17:18and there's hot news from James Allen.
00:17:20As he's in the pits, comes Hakkinen.
00:17:22Mick Hakkinen is in the pits, as you can see, going to the slicks.
00:17:25All that excitement with the pass of Michael Schumacher.
00:17:27Rubens Barrichello put the slick tires on when he made that stop.
00:17:30Now, look at Jenson Button's times.
00:17:32He's four seconds alone faster in the first sector on the slick tires.
00:17:36Michael Schumacher is going to have to make this switch very, very soon as well.
00:17:40It could be the opposite of what happened in Spa.
00:17:42McLaren reacting first to put their man on the slick tires.
00:17:45Michael's got to get in very soon to make that switch, too.
00:17:47Yeah, Johnny Herbert is laughing.
00:17:49He started on dries.
00:17:50Remember, he's 44 seconds behind the leaders,
00:17:53but he'll make up a lot of time.
00:17:55He's not going to have to come in.
00:17:56Yes, it cost you about 38 seconds in total to stop there.
00:17:59Car 2 has a 10-second stop-and-go penalty,
00:18:03and the real pain for Coulthard is
00:18:05he cannot change tires.
00:18:07And Fisichella, too.
00:18:09So, Coulthard and Fisichella, both with 10-second stop-and-gos,
00:18:12and they cannot change tires when they're in the pits.
00:18:15They have to go round again.
00:18:17So, now, we're on lap 8 out of 73
00:18:20with Michael Schumacher two points behind Micah Hacken and in the World Championship
00:18:25with two races to go after this.
00:18:27Just going through the puddles there as he goes into the banking.
00:18:30He didn't go in the pits.
00:18:31I'm absolutely gobsmacked at that.
00:18:34He did not go in the pits.
00:18:35I really think that could be a tactical error there.
00:18:39So, Coulthard is in the pit lane for his stop-and-go.
00:18:42I'm amazed.
00:18:43Mind you, it's a 23.8 from Michael.
00:18:45So, he's actually...
00:18:47No, maybe he's right.
00:18:48He's still faster than the other guys who have already moved on to slick tires.
00:18:52Yes, 1.24 has been the critical time for changing tires.
00:18:56One minute, 24 seconds.
00:18:58Here is David Coulthard taking his 10-second penalty.
00:19:01He came in from the top three,
00:19:03and this is why he got it.
00:19:05Yes, he's on the right-hand side.
00:19:06He rolls initially.
00:19:07He reacted too fast, then tried to slow, stop it, and go again.
00:19:10Sometimes you can get away with that,
00:19:12but that was just a few meters too far there for Coulthard.
00:19:15He rejoins the track, but still on wet tires.
00:19:19But Michael Schumacher doing a sterling job up at the front,
00:19:22and I can even see the outside of his left rear is blistered quite badly.
00:19:26Look at the dark area there,
00:19:28the shaded area on the extreme left of his left rear tire.
00:19:32James?
00:19:33The lesson we learned, though, Martin, at Hockenheim
00:19:35is you can actually drive these wet tires, the soft, wet tires, quite hard.
00:19:38Let them blister.
00:19:39It doesn't actually affect the performance that much for a little while.
00:19:42I think what Michael and Ferrari are trying to do now
00:19:44is build themselves a big enough cushion
00:19:46that they can get back out in front of Coulthard and Hakkinen, obviously,
00:19:49who are currently 31.6 seconds behind them on the road.
00:19:53Bear in mind what Roger Osborne said to me at the start, though.
00:19:56It's a possibility of showers again,
00:19:58and I'm seeing a few spots of rain begin to fall,
00:20:00so it's very much finely balanced, this.
00:20:03Well, Michael Schumacher has just gone round in 1.23.7.
00:20:06Remember that magic figure, 1.24.
00:20:09And I must say this, while it's still relevant,
00:20:12in fourth position at the moment is the pride of Argentina,
00:20:16Gaston Manzacane in the Minardi.
00:20:19He has not come in.
00:20:20Denis has not come in.
00:20:22He is third in the Sauber.
00:20:24Heinz-Harald Frentzen is second, 13 seconds,
00:20:27and you're looking at Frentzen now behind Michael Schumacher.
00:20:31We're on lap 10 out of 73,
00:20:33and there is Pedro Denis, third place,
00:20:365.5 seconds behind Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:20:39Schumacher, Frentzen, Denis, Manzacane, Hakkinen,
00:20:42who's been in, Coulthard back in.
00:20:45Coulthard in for six, but I have to say I was completely wrong.
00:20:48Michael Schumacher's got it aced,
00:20:50and he is still the fastest man on the track on wet tyres.
00:20:54Now, he was 4 seconds faster than Hakkinen, who is on slick,
00:20:58so Michael spotted it.
00:21:00The wets are not that bad after all.
00:21:02It's certainly the way they're working on that Ferrari.
00:21:04This is Ayrton Senna in reverse.
00:21:07Senna's brilliance was that he could stay out in the wet
00:21:11on dry weather tyres longer than anybody else
00:21:14and put up comparable lap times and go on and win the race.
00:21:18Well, Michael Schumacher, you've heard the situation now,
00:21:21and you look at Pedro Denis on lap 11.
00:21:25Now, after Johnny Herbert,
00:21:27who I last spoke to you was in 18th position,
00:21:30he's now up into 10th place in the Jaguar
00:21:33as a result of starting the race on dry tyres,
00:21:36fighting at the start when the surface was damp
00:21:39and benefiting as it dries out.
00:21:41He's in 10th place.
00:21:43Yes, it's not going to work for Johnny, though.
00:21:45He's 52 seconds behind the leader,
00:21:48and it's a 35, 38-second stop,
00:21:50so Johnny lost a little bit too much in the early stages.
00:21:54Michael Schumacher now 1.5 seconds a lap faster
00:21:57than Frentzen in 2nd place.
00:21:59Michael going faster and faster each lap
00:22:02despite the track drying out.
00:22:04There's Barrichello. He's down in 7th place,
00:22:06and still he's 4 seconds slower than Michael Schumacher.
00:22:10So Michael's really got it spotted.
00:22:12Wets are still the answer.
00:22:14Yeah, but look at this battle.
00:22:156th is Villeneuve, 7th was Barrichello
00:22:18because Schumacher in the Williams BMW
00:22:22passes the Ferrari at Turn 1
00:22:25and sets about the BAR with its Honda engine in front of him.
00:22:29That's a key move there for Ralph Schumacher
00:22:31because he has already stopped for slick,
00:22:33so Ralph Schumacher nicely making his way through
00:22:36on the dry tyres.
00:22:37Lap 11.
00:22:39And Barrichello, there he is.
00:22:41He's been in, and it's not a good race for the Brazilian
00:22:45at the present moment.
00:22:46Starting 4th on the grid.
00:22:48Now you can see from the matte colour of the tarmac there
00:22:52which is glistening most of the way
00:22:54on the twisty bit of the infield
00:22:56that it's still very damp there.
00:22:58And Villeneuve, who you were just looking at as now we join
00:23:02Mika Häkkinen, was saying
00:23:04that it's very, very slippery indeed on the infield.
00:23:08Now watch Mika Häkkinen as he comes up to Gaston Mazzucane
00:23:12in the Binardi, who is in 4th position.
00:23:15He's not been in, and of course Häkkinen has.
00:23:20Häkkinen on the dry tyres.
00:23:22We know that Herbert definitely started on dry tyres.
00:23:25I don't know about Mazzucane.
00:23:26Maybe we can have a look.
00:23:27They look like wet tyres to me.
00:23:29They look fairly nasty blisters,
00:23:30but Michael Schumacher still in the 1 minute 23s
00:23:34as we go for a short break.
00:24:382A 3.30 x 0.00
00:24:423S 4.30 x 0.00
00:24:462A 3.30 x 0.00
00:24:503S 4.30 x 0.00
00:24:542A 3.30 x 0.00
00:24:583S 4.30 x 0.00
00:25:022A 3.30 x 0.00
00:25:053S 4.30 x 0.00
00:25:093S 4.30 x 0.00
00:25:132A 3.30 x 0.00
00:25:173S 4.30 x 0.00
00:25:212A 3.30 x 0.00
00:25:253F 5.30 x 0.00
00:25:293Lz 6.50 x 0.00
00:26:02He's followed Matsukane and can't seem to do anything about him as Trulli goes straight
00:26:18on.
00:26:19What you saw as we came back from the break was Trulli sitting in the pits after a disastrous
00:26:24stop.
00:26:25It seemed as if the Jordan team brought out the wrong tyres and he's out of the race anyway.
00:26:30But he sat there for ages and ages and they had to change the tyres and it looked like
00:26:34they were putting wets on and they should have had a set of slicks.
00:26:38So finally then Button and look Mika Hakkinen waving his arm.
00:26:42Maybe Mika doesn't realise, I mean it's the first time ever he's racing that Minardi for
00:26:46position.
00:26:47Yeah it's the 7th retirement for Trulli this year and Matsukane is in 3rd place, he's in
00:26:53a podium position.
00:26:54He's not going to give up, he should do of course.
00:26:57Now where are the blue flags and why doesn't he watch them?
00:27:00No there are no blue flags Murray, he's in 3rd, he should not have a blue flag.
00:27:04As I said Matsukane is not used to having a McLaren behind him without seeing a sea
00:27:08of blue flags.
00:27:09He is racing for position, he is totally entitled to hold Hakkinen up as long as he can.
00:27:15As now Frentzen comes in from 2nd place for his slicks, Matsukane was definitely on wet
00:27:21so had a look in that last shot and Hakkinen is now completing his 3rd lap behind the Minardi.
00:27:28And the Jaguars are continuing to go well, Eddie Irvine, Mark Junaid has just gone fastest
00:27:36in the first sector and he's in the Minardi, Ralf Schumacher the quickest man on the track.
00:27:41Now listen to this, Michael Schumacher leads Frentzen by 43 seconds at the present moment.
00:27:48Schumacher is the only man of importance at the top not to have come in yet.
00:27:55Frentzen is 43 seconds behind him, Mika Hakkinen is now officially in 3rd position, I'm waiting
00:28:01to see the shot, where is Matsukane, but Ralf Schumacher is the fastest of the lot.
00:28:06And there is Jenson Button, look at his flat spotted right front tyre, but he's out of the race.
00:28:13Yeah I think Jenson's locked up big time somewhere, been off the road by the looks of it.
00:28:17This is the end of the pit lane, so where on earth has Jenson come from, how did he
00:28:23get there, where did he lock up his tyres, we'll see a replay hopefully, and look a few
00:28:28spits of rain on the helicam there, that doesn't necessarily mean to say there's much falling
00:28:33on the racetrack, you do get a false impression from those cameras, and there you're watching
00:28:37Barrichello who is down in 9th place and not going at all well on those slicks since he
00:28:43changed over, Michael Schumacher still going faster and faster on his weds.
00:28:49Ferrari are ready, and we think it must be for Michael Schumacher this time around.
00:28:54Yeah but watch Johnny Herbert behind Rubens Barrichello, Johnny Herbert very much in the
00:28:59top 10, here they come, there's the BAR of Jacques Villeneuve, followed by Barrichello,
00:29:06followed by Johnny Herbert, over the line they go, Ralf Schumacher is up into 3rd place
00:29:11in the Williams BMW, he is really flying, he's just out of 1.20.8.
00:29:16Yes that's 2.5 seconds, oh look at Herbert, yeah Johnny's now gone past Barrichello,
00:29:21Barrichello nowhere on the slippery track, Michael has to come into the pits now, he's
00:29:25now starting to lose 1-2 seconds, and we understand that the Ferrari is in the pit lane, yes he
00:29:32is now, James.
00:29:33A 43 second lead over Haken and he will rejoin in the lead, amazingly Martin he's putting
00:29:38new tyres on the right hand side of the car, and old ones, used ones on the left hand side
00:29:42of the car, watch out on the fuel nozzle he's on for, that'll tell you how much fuel they're
00:29:46putting in at 12 litres per second, quite a bit of fuel, quite a bit of fuel for Michael,
00:29:51so that will push him quite deep, 7 seconds, push him quite deep into the race before he
00:29:55makes the major stop, but what they learned here was what Button did in Germany, he went
00:30:00long on the wet tyres, they didn't blister, or rather they blistered but it didn't matter
00:30:04on the pace, that's what Ferrari learned from that and they've used it today, McLaren have
00:30:07not used that lesson.
00:30:09Great great thinking again, out of the pit lane comes Michael Schumacher, he was leading
00:30:14by 43 seconds ahead of Mika Hakkinen when he came in, Mika Hakkinen is now really getting
00:30:20a spurt on, he's 16 seconds behind Michael Schumacher after they have both stopped, Ralf
00:30:26Schumacher is only 3 seconds behind Hakkinen and lapping faster than the McLaren in 3rd
00:30:32place, hides Harold Frentzen in 4th position, remember he's made his pit stop, Pedro Diniz
00:30:37still in an excellent in 5th place in the Sauber, Jos Verstappen, Jos Verstappen the
00:30:43Dutchman in the arrows is 6th and Ralf Schumacher is keeping up this blistering pace, he's gone
00:30:50faster again, he's closing the gap on Mika Hakkinen, hopefully we'll see, there they
00:30:55are in shot, Hakkinen on the left has just gone past Vissi Keller who is in 20th place
00:31:01and Ralf Schumacher will be vying to do the same thing.
00:31:05After his 10 second stop and go and then having to come in next time around for slicks, Coulthard
00:31:09down in 14th place, so the only man not to visit the pit lane so far as we're into lap
00:31:1517 is Johnny Herbert, 8th place man, the only man we think that was brave enough to start
00:31:21on the wet tyres.
00:31:22Jack Villeneuve there fighting with Barrichello, only one Ferrari in the top 6, only one McLaren
00:31:30in the top 6 points scoring position, Villeneuve fighting Barrichello and behind Barrichello
00:31:36is Pedro de la Rosa, the arrows are 6th and 10th.
00:31:41New fastest lap for Ralf Schumacher still flying, a 1.19.0, I'm sure it will come up
00:31:45on the screen, Johnny Herbert has now passed Villeneuve and homing in on Verstappen and
00:31:51Donitz, Johnny needing to impress the American racing scene, he wants a drive in IndyCar
00:31:56and there goes Johnny past Donitz and that is for 6th place, no he doesn't quite make
00:32:00it stick and don't turn in on his nose Pedro and Johnny lives for another day, but that's
00:32:06for 6th place there squabbling, Johnny having a great race.
00:32:09Yeah the man from Romford, Johnny Herbert who so badly smashed his feet in 1988 in that
00:32:18dreadful Formula 3000 race at Brands Hatch, he's never walked the same since but he drives
00:32:24magnificently and as you can see he's attacking to get the Jaguar up into the points by getting
00:32:30past Pedro Donitz, but ahead of both of them is Jos Verstappen and here is Herbert ducking
00:32:36and diving behind the Sauber, Pedro Donitz very sensibly keeping to the, and off, and
00:32:41off goes, there Johnny Herbert goes off, no Donitz went off, sorry Donitz goes off, Donitz
00:32:47goes off, Barrichello's now attacking him, Donitz comes back on in front of fellow countryman
00:32:52Rubens Barrichello or Ruby as they call him over here on the American commentary, I'm
00:32:56sure he'd be pleased with that one, but he certainly won't be pleased with this race,
00:33:00but Donitz locking the inside as he turned into turn 10 there and sailing straight onto
00:33:05the grass where there's even less grip, Johnny says thank you very much, now we didn't see
00:33:10whether Barrichello got past him but it means that Johnny Herbert is up, there it is now,
00:33:15that's Barrichello getting a good slipstream off of Donitz and he should have the line
00:33:20into the first corner, he goes back for a second helping of tow and catapults past Donitz,
00:33:24that was smart thinking there by Rubens, pulled out of the slipstream, hit a brick wall of
00:33:29aerodynamic drag, ducked back in again and launched one up the inside, nice move there
00:33:35by Rubens, haven't seen much of what's happening at the front here is the answer, Michael Schumacher
00:33:39lap 19 out of 73, Mikko Häkkinen is going quicker at the present moment, he's 9.7 seconds
00:33:46behind the Ferrari and closing, Ralf Schumacher is third, Heinz-Harald Frentzen is fourth,
00:33:52Jos Verstappen is fifth, you've seen Johnny Herbert attacking and off goes Mikko Salo
00:33:59in the Sauber, he's had a very rotten time in practising, he was 16th, he's out of the
00:34:04race. Hey look at this, Mikko Häkkinen is already one and a bit, 1.2, 1.3 seconds up
00:34:10on Michael Schumacher this time around, Schumacher is not quick at this stage of the race, Häkkinen
00:34:16is the man on the move and the lead is now down to 8.1 seconds as you see Salo moving
00:34:22off and he put too much power in, he could have got out of there but he spun the wheels
00:34:26too much and he should have driven away so gently and he missed his chance there Mikko
00:34:31of just, just clambering out of that gravel trap, let's take a short break
00:37:01and Michael Schumacher has got the message that Mikko Häkkinen after the pit stops was
00:37:07catching him, he's just put in the fastest lap of the race, one minute 17.581, four tenths of a
00:37:14second faster than Mikko Häkkinen, he now leads the Finn in the McLaren by seven and a half seconds
00:37:20Ralf Schumacher continues to hold a brilliant third place in the Williams BMW ahead of
00:37:26Heinz-Harald Frentzen and there is the German, his teammate Jarno Trulli has long since retired
00:37:34fifth place is Jos Verstappen in the Arrows, the Arrows is going superbly here but look, look, look
00:37:39watch this, that is Jonny Herbert who's come up from 19th on the grid to 6th in the race in the
00:37:45Jaguar, yes he's been about three quarters of a second faster than Verstappen in the previous
00:37:51three or four laps as he's been catching up, Jonny with a very, very good Jaguar underneath him at
00:37:56the moment and he seems to also have good straight line speed but so traditionally does that Arrows
00:38:01the Arrows has been one of the fastest cars in the straight all weekend so once again in fact
00:38:06it is the fastest in a couple of speed traps around here so Jonny's got his work cut out
00:38:11he's gonna have to be brave on the braking into one to get up the inside of Verstappen
00:38:16and Häkkinen responding to Michael Schumacher's new pace and brings the gap down to just 6.3 seconds
00:38:23Louise what can you tell us? I'm standing here with Jenson Button, Jenson that was a rather short
00:38:28but fraught Grand Prix for you? Yeah definitely, the second or third lap I think I went down the inside of Jarno again
00:38:36he seemed to move across when I was alongside him and then we hit wheels and then I got a puncture
00:38:41so the team made a good decision to try slicks and I think it was working the way it was how fast
00:38:45I was catching the people in front and then I don't know what happened I was alongside
00:38:50Barrichello and it was like I hit something like you know I went across the finish line like I hit
00:38:54the bricks or something and then the engine just died and that was it, game over. Thanks Jenson
00:39:00and Jonny Herbert there is attacking Jos Verstappen for that fifth place
00:39:04now there is Jacques Villeneuve in seventh place and Rubens Barrichello just behind him in the Ferrari
00:39:10and Micah Häkkinen continues to close on Michael Schumacher up front five and a half seconds now
00:39:16between the Ferrari in the lead and the McLaren in second place, Ralf Schumacher is on his own as
00:39:23is Heinz-Harald Brinson but Jos Verstappen in the arrows has got Jonny Herbert right behind him
00:39:28seventh is Jacques Villeneuve, there is the Canadian, the Indy 500 winner from the past and he's got Rubens
00:39:34Barrichello falling back, falling back a bit in the Ferrari. Another eight tenths of a second out
00:39:41of the lead by Häkkinen down to 5.5 now behind Michael Schumacher, Häkkinen is in a Schumacher
00:39:47sandwich he's 5.5 behind Michael or Mike as they call him out here and 5.1 ahead of Ralf Schumacher
00:39:56but Micah is the man on the move and he's already four tenths of a second up on this man Michael
00:40:00Schumacher in the first section of this lap so it's really they're just yo-yoing around Michael
00:40:07attacks and then Häkkinen counter-attacks, good stuff. Here's Michael now what's happening behind
00:40:12Rubens Barrichello eighth place, ninth is Denis, tenth is De La Rosa both arrows in the top ten
00:40:17Eddie Irvine 11th in the second Jaguar, David Coulthard 1.1 seconds behind Irvine in the McLaren
00:40:24Riccardo Zonta is 13th then Marc Genet, Jean Alessi, Nick Heidfeldt in the Prost, Alexander
00:40:31Vuarts in the Benetton, Mats Akane is 18th, Fisichella has been lapped 19th out of the race
00:40:37Micah Salo in the Sauber, Jenson Button that you've just heard from in the Williams and Jarno
00:40:43Trulli in the Jordan, there is race leader now you can see the gap between the red Ferrari on the
00:40:48right and the silver McLaren on the left as they go into the infield it just inside the golf course
00:40:56here at Indianapolis believe it or not the whole Grand Prix circuit is inside the Indy
00:41:02super speedway as is the golf course and amazingly the Grand Prix circuit at 2.6
00:41:08miles long is actually a whisker longer than the super speedway
00:41:14they're up to this complex of turns nine eight nine and ten which is the only mild criticism
00:41:22I've heard of the circuit it does disturb the rhythm but if this race goes well and it's a
00:41:28fabulous race and America likes it I think they're going to make alterations to the track make it
00:41:33longer and probably cut out those twisty bits Hakanen 7 tenths up in the mid sector of this
00:41:38lap so the gap is going to be well under five seconds the start finish line is quite a long
00:41:44way down this straight 16.6 for Michael 15.7 for Hakanen the gap is down to 4.1 seconds Hakanen
00:41:53is sustaining this charge James what can you tell us Michael Schumacher at that stop the hose was on
00:41:58for 6.4 seconds he took 25 laps with the fuel on board so I reckon he's fueled to about lap 50
00:42:03something but I think Hakanen has got less fuel on board probably about 15 or 20 kilos less that's
00:42:09about four or five laps so what Hakanen has to do in this phase of the race before he makes his
00:42:15stop is get on terms with Michael Schumacher hopefully get in front of him it's the only
00:42:19way he's going to be able to win it thanks for that James we're looking at Jos Verstappen in
00:42:24the orange arrows with Johnny Herbert in sixth place right behind him they're coming up to a
00:42:30slower car I think it's Fisichella in the Benetton and it may well be that if Verstappen gets his
00:42:37timing wrong to get past the Benetton Johnny Herbert will see his opportunity
00:42:41to move up from one oh and who is there is Mika Hakanen with his car on fire Mika Hakanen with
00:42:48the McLaren on fire yes he's gonna have to come in no doubt about that oh this is this this is
00:42:55tragic luck for the McLaren team and Mika Hakanen and if Michael Schumacher can stay out there
00:43:02it is going to put him in a commanding lead for the world championship oh Mika Hakanen crawls in
00:43:09Schumacher pulling away of course all the time Ralph Schumacher goes up into second place
00:43:14as I talk to you and as Mika Hakanen comes in undoubtedly on lap 27 to retire from the USA
00:43:24Grand Prix and that is only his third retirement of the year out in Australia out in Brazil and
00:43:31it couldn't have happened at a worse place here yes I think that's the first time we've seen a
00:43:36McLaren fail probably in 22 starts something like that 24 starts between the pair of them
00:43:42such an unusual sight these days both the front runners have had great reliability Ferrari McLaren
00:43:48McLaren probably even better and look it's really there must be a hydraulic or oil line that's come
00:43:53adrift in there and a bit of a fire marshal wouldn't go amiss yeah exactly and then the
00:43:58mechanics are down there Hakanen made it just into the beginning of the pit lane
00:44:02sensible to stop it early you don't want to go in where you know there are 22 fuel rigs sitting
00:44:07so Hakanen stops it early and that is a huge dent in his chances of a third world championship well
00:44:14let's just consider the situation Mika Hakanen was two points ahead of Michael Schumacher in
00:44:21the world championship if capital I capital F if Michael Schumacher wins this race he will
00:44:28get 10 world championship points which would put him eight points ahead of Mika Hakanen with two
00:44:34races to go Japan in two weeks Malaysia in four weeks the German is certainly looking good but
00:44:41we're on lap 28 it's a 73 lap race anything can happen yes it's such a shame for you the viewers
00:44:48and the quarter of a million people here because that was shaping up to be a great great squabble
00:44:54there between the two finest drivers in Formula One at the moment now we've got three Germans in
00:44:59the top three looks like a good day for Germany at the moment not a great day for the British
00:45:04mob although where's Herbert gone Herbert has fallen down to 13th he's in the pits as we talk
00:45:10that's obviously for his first scheduled stop of the afternoon and a major drum there they're
00:45:15changing the front wing so are they and it doesn't look damaged in any way that's going to
00:45:20cost Johnny 20-30 seconds there goes his world championship points almost certainly what a shame
00:45:26I don't know what was the problem with it Hakanen there back into the pits looking at his car
00:45:31and reflecting on what may have been there shame for Herbert he's dropped out of the picture so
00:45:36top Brit at the moment is Irvine in ninth and Coulthard chasing him level with him as they
00:45:41went over the start line 0.0 between them off out of our view but Coulthard in tenth and no doubt
00:45:49the calm imperturbable Ross Braun the Ferrari master tactician and technical chief on the pit
00:45:58lane will have said to Michael Schumacher Michael Mika is out of the race now just take things easy
00:46:07don't get riled but Michael Schumacher won't do that now at the present moment we've got the
00:46:12prospect of the most successful brothers combination in the history of Formula One
00:46:18and unless I'm very much mistaken it's the ninth brothers pairing finishing first and second because
00:46:24there is Ralph Schumacher in the Williams BMW he is in second place 12 and a half seconds behind
00:46:31brother Michael and 16 seconds ahead of fellow German Heinz Harald Fredsen so Ferrari leads
00:46:39Williams BMW second and the highest place that they have had this season is a third place three
00:46:45of them for Ralph Schumacher and fourth for Stappen fifth Villeneuve sixth Rubens Barrichello
00:46:52we're going to leave Indianapolis join us for the rest of the race later
00:48:02so
00:48:27mika hackett and very very bad luck there do you have any warning
00:48:30Did you have any warning that the engine was going to blow?
00:48:32No, no.
00:48:33They did not give me any warning, so I don't know when the start went wrong, but...
00:48:41It was pretty shame, pretty shame.
00:48:43You know, the races get a bit short at some moments, and...
00:48:48And, and, uh...
00:48:50We have to finish the race to fight the championship, and today we did not, so...
00:48:56It doesn't help us.
00:48:58I'm sure it's very disappointing, but you must have thought those last few laps...
00:49:01Do you think you would have caught Michael? Do you think you would have won if you'd lasted?
00:49:04Yeah, of course.
00:49:05Thanks a lot.
00:49:28...position in the top ten, but a terrific battle between Verstappen, Villeneuve and
00:49:49Barrichello.
00:49:50Only about six seconds covering the battle for fourth, fifth and sixth places, which
00:49:55at the present moment, Jos Verstappen in the arrows has got.
00:49:59And the highest position that we've had for an arrows this year is Jos Verstappen's fourth
00:50:04place in Italy.
00:50:05The last race at Monza, they're doing really well.
00:50:08Yes, so seven and a half seconds, look, from sixth through to ninth.
00:50:11Coulthard's too slow out of the turn eleven to be able to get a run at the arrows, which
00:50:16is very, very fast in a straight line.
00:50:19So his rise up through the field after that stop-go penalty for jumping the start has
00:50:24really come to a bit of a grinding halt.
00:50:26Now, he cleared five of them, but now it looks significantly harder as he comes up against
00:50:31a car that has decent grip and a lot of straight line speed.
00:50:34Denis is driving well, just ahead of them.
00:50:36He's in seventh, Barrichello just down the road by a second and a bit.
00:50:40Yeah, so watch Denis, the arrows and David Coulthard while I tell you about the Constructors'
00:50:46Championship.
00:50:47Mika Häkkinen there out of the race, no points.
00:50:50And David Coulthard is out of the points.
00:50:52Both the Ferraris are in the top six, ten potential points for Michael Schumacher, one
00:50:57potential point for Rubens Barrichello, eleven altogether.
00:51:01And Ferrari started this race four points behind McLaren, so they could end this race
00:51:06seven points ahead if things stay as they are.
00:51:09Coulthard much, much better out of eleven that time, Murray, look, and much closer too.
00:51:13I think De La Rosa slightly put off his stride by Denis, but can Coulthard pick up enough
00:51:20of a tow?
00:51:21It doesn't look like it, does it?
00:51:22He's clearly going to be faster down there in the slipstream.
00:51:25And De La Rosa fainting a look at the inside of seventh place man Denis.
00:51:29Well, DC has not got enough straight line speed.
00:51:32Two great scraps on the course, you're looking at one of them.
00:51:35Verstappen, Villeneuve and Barrichello for fourth.
00:51:38And here is Denis, De La Rosa and Coulthard fighting for seventh position, held by the
00:51:45Brazilian in the Sauber at the present moment.
00:51:49And it's even, Steven, as far as lap times are concerned, as Michael Schumacher goes
00:51:56into turn one at the end of that 210 mile an hour straight on his 34th lap out of 73,
00:52:04leading Ralf Schumacher, his brother, by 14 and a half seconds.
00:52:10Yes, Michael stretching it out now, that was his fastest lap of the race so far, the previous
00:52:14lap, now beginning to pull away from Ralf.
00:52:17Ralf looks like he's been on a rally, doesn't he?
00:52:19There must have been quite a few cars off in that first lap, dragging mud back onto
00:52:23the racetrack and the aerodynamics just trail it down the side of the car.
00:52:28Several of the cars out there looking a little bit scruffy and we're not even at halfway
00:52:32point yet.
00:52:33I'm mighty impressed, Martin, by the Arrows.
00:52:36Jos Verstappen in fourth place, De La Rosa in eighth position.
00:52:40They've got the excellent Supertech engine, it's a very slippery motor car, thanks to
00:52:45Egbert Hammerdi and Mike Coughlin's design work on it, and they were a very small budget
00:52:52compared with the teams ahead of them.
00:52:54And Ralf Schumacher tiptoeing round the corner there.
00:52:57Yes, you saw in the background the Jaguar, I believe that was of Johnny Herbert, remembering
00:53:01he was absolutely flying.
00:53:03That nose change he had to have, I just couldn't see a reason why, but there must have been
00:53:07one, has put him down to 17th and last but one, unfortunately.
00:53:12So, sterling effort from Johnny Herbert in the early part of the race.
00:53:15The only man who started this race on slick tyres, got up into sixth place, was flying
00:53:20still, but unfortunately now down in 17th.
00:53:24Well, we're getting towards a half distance.
00:53:28Half distance is about 35, 36 laps.
00:53:31We're on lap 35 at the present moment and Michael Schumacher just must be praying for
00:53:39reliability, because he's got a comfortable 15 second cushion between himself and his
00:53:45brother.
00:53:46He's 33 seconds ahead of Fredson, who is in third place.
00:53:50Everybody has been in at least once.
00:53:53Fisichella's been in twice.
00:53:55Mikko Häkkinen, of course, has been in twice.
00:53:57The second visit was to retire.
00:53:59Jarno Trulli made a couple of stops before he retired.
00:54:03Retirements in the order that they left the race.
00:54:06Jarno Trulli was out first.
00:54:08Then Jenson Button.
00:54:10Mikko Sala retired for Sauber.
00:54:13And the most important retirement from the point of view of the World Championship, Mikko Häkkinen.
00:54:18And he is well and truly out of the race.
00:54:21No points at the present moment for McLaren, because David Coulthard is down in ninth place.
00:54:27Yes, and that was Fisichella spinning off.
00:54:30He's already had a stop and go penalty, so he's not in the action.
00:54:35There he is trying to correct it.
00:54:37Johnny Herbert did in fact have a damaged right hand front corner of his wing.
00:54:43That's why they changed it.
00:54:44And we believe also Verstappen is in the wall somewhere.
00:54:47And it's going to be somewhere close to that.
00:54:49Here it is. This will be a replay.
00:54:51And it is coming up to turn eight.
00:54:53There's Fisichella spinning.
00:54:54But at the bottom of the screen, Murray, I think we just saw Verstappen losing the tail end of the car.
00:54:59So this is Coulthard shaping up one more time at the back of the arrows.
00:55:04He's got to get some kind of supersonic slipstream, because he's carrying more wing than the arrows.
00:55:09And as he pulls out, he will hit a barn door.
00:55:11And still Coulthard cannot get close enough.
00:55:14And there is the end result of Verstappen.
00:55:16I think he locked the rears on the way in to turn eight.
00:55:20And he's made it as far as the wall across the slippery grass.
00:55:24Obviously OK, making sure his steering wheel was put on again as per regulations.
00:55:30Now let's have a look at this replay as David Coulthard comes up behind the arrows.
00:55:35I think we're back live on this one.
00:55:37But I've crashed a couple of Tom Walkinshaw's cars like Verstappen just has done.
00:55:42He's not a pretty sight when you get back to the pits.
00:55:44He seems to be even wider and sterner than normal when you get there, I have to say.
00:55:49Well, David Coulthard fighting for seventh position at the moment.
00:55:52And he's still two places away from a single world championship point.
00:55:58And to get it, he's got to get past De La Rosa and Pedro Diniz, who is in sixth place.
00:56:04Last world championship point scoring position.
00:56:07Rubens Barrichello, of course, has moved up to fifth position.
00:56:10Good news for Ferrari as a result of Verstappen going out.
00:56:13So he's on a potential two points with Michael Schumacher's ten making twelve.
00:56:19Jacques Villeneuve is in fourth place in the BAR, lapping faster than Frentzen.
00:56:24Look at this time, Coulthard is ever, ever closer.
00:56:27Now this must surely be his chance.
00:56:29If he can't do it on this, I wonder how David's ever going to find enough straight line speed.
00:56:33There's just no way through there.
00:56:35Coulthard really now struggling behind that car.
00:56:38We've got some strange lap times going on there.
00:56:41Fastest two men on the track last time around, Villeneuve and Barrichello.
00:56:44Look, and Coulthard makes it through.
00:56:46De La Rosa running wide in three, Coulthard squeezing through.
00:56:50And that was a key one for David because that Arrows is so fast in a straight line.
00:56:55Exactly. Pedro De La Rosa, certainly one of the finds of this season.
00:57:00He's had a lot of success in previous categories.
00:57:03Champion in Formula Renault, champion in Formula 3, champion in Formula Nippon.
00:57:08Then he was the Jordan test driver.
00:57:10Now he's in the Arrows making a very good fist of it indeed.
00:57:13Hopefully staying with them next year.
00:57:15We are on lap 38 as David Coulthard now has a look at Pedro Diniz's Sauber for sixth position.
00:57:24And one world championship point.
00:57:26Jacques Villeneuve exits turn 13.
00:57:29Still ahead of Rubens Barrichello in fourth position, Villeneuve.
00:57:34And the fastest man on the track, of course, is David Coulthard.
00:57:38But he's bottled up at the present moment.
00:57:41Can he get past?
00:57:42Well, Villeneuve.
00:57:44Ah, and here's Coulthard having a go at Pedro Diniz at the end of the straight.
00:57:50Pedro Diniz shuts the door in his face, which he's perfectly entitled to do at that juncture of the course.
00:57:56And off goes Ralf Sumaca momentarily.
00:57:5917 points behind the leader in second place.
00:58:02Yes, 17 seconds behind the leader.
00:58:04And I don't think it would have cost Ralf too much there.
00:58:07I think he just scampered down the grass between 9 and 10.
00:58:10Here we're going to see it.
00:58:11He locks up the inside front, as you can see.
00:58:14I think he then had to do that short straight.
00:58:17Just spinning his wheels down the grass as Michael Sumaca sets a new lap record of 115.229.
00:58:26And he really is very comfortable up front.
00:58:28It was Ralf in second place who went off the road.
00:58:30Ralf doing a 17.3 on that lap.
00:58:33So actually it cost him about just over a second.
00:58:36Not as much as you'd think.
00:58:37Have you ever seen so many people at a Formula 1 Grand Prix before?
00:58:41The answer is no, because there haven't been as many.
00:58:44Massive crowd.
00:58:45Massive crowd.
00:58:46David Coulthard again.
00:58:47Attack, attack, attack.
00:58:49This could be his opportunity.
00:58:50Into the bank, turn 13.
00:58:52Right up behind Pedro Diniz's Sauber.
00:58:55He can pull through and get past now.
00:58:57Pedro de la Rosa sees his opportunity.
00:58:59Pedro Diniz shuts the door, having a go.
00:59:02Now David's gone up the inside.
00:59:03He had to have a second go at the slipstream again.
00:59:06As long as he doesn't outbrake himself, he has a clear run.
00:59:09Good maneuvering there for David.
00:59:11He's just got the McLaren.
00:59:12He's not fast enough in a straight line, but he's using the others.
00:59:15Isn't it great to see them really being able to follow each other
00:59:18so closely at 200 miles an hour?
00:59:21There must have been, what, a half a meter between them?
00:59:23Less than that.
00:59:24And Coulthard having to go for a second helping of toe
00:59:27to get track position.
00:59:29Nicely done.
00:59:30That releases him now towards Barrichello in fifth place.
00:59:33So now, Mr. Producer, please let us have a look at
00:59:36Jacques Villeneuve and Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
00:59:38because Villeneuve in the BAR...
00:59:41Hey, there he is. Thank you very much.
00:59:43He must have heard me.
00:59:44Because he's closed right up on Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:59:46and Barrichello is right behind him.
00:59:48This is the battle for fourth place.
00:59:50Villeneuve fourth.
00:59:51And what is Ralf Schumacher doing?
00:59:52Into the pits.
00:59:53It looks like a regular stop, doesn't it?
00:59:56And just coming in for...
00:59:58Remember, he stopped quite early in the race,
01:00:00so Ralf should be fueling.
01:00:02Quite a long fuel stop, I'd imagine.
01:00:04Should be fueling him now, right to the end of the race
01:00:07as he comes in from second place.
01:00:09And look, all that scampering across the grass
01:00:12really does make it look even more of a rally car.
01:00:15Yeah, and Frentzen's gone up into second place
01:00:17with Villeneuve right behind him.
01:00:19Barrichello next.
01:00:20Then Ralf Schumacher has rejoined.
01:00:22David Coulthard in the points.
01:00:24Fastest man on the track.
01:00:261 minute 15.042.
01:00:28Fight, Ralf, to get your place back.
01:00:30Bad news there for Ralf Schumacher.
01:00:32As he came out, Diniz and Della Rosa went through,
01:00:35so Ralf is going to come in somewhere around eighth place
01:00:40until the others make their pit stops.
01:00:42Look at this. This is the battle for second place.
01:00:44Frentzen in the yellow Jordan.
01:00:46Villeneuve in the white BAR.
01:00:48Barrichello fourth in the Ferrari.
01:00:52And spin for...
01:00:53Spin, spin, spin!
01:00:55And it's Jack Villeneuve.
01:00:57Lost his position to Rubens Barrichello,
01:01:00but Louise Goodman down there can tell us
01:01:02what happened to Johnny Herbert.
01:01:04I can indeed, Murray.
01:01:05What happened is when Johnny came in for his pit stop,
01:01:07he actually locked up
01:01:08and clipped a couple of the mechanics.
01:01:10The mechanics were okay,
01:01:11but unfortunately one of them dropped the wheel gun
01:01:13actually on the front wing,
01:01:14and the front wing got broken.
01:01:16That's why you saw the mechanics changing that front wing,
01:01:18and that's why Johnny's dropped down a bit.
01:01:20Thanks, Louise.
01:01:21Masterly avoidance by Rubens Barrichello
01:01:24of Villeneuve spinning BAR.
01:01:26Masterly recovery by Villeneuve.
01:01:28Yes, Villeneuve hooked the grass on the inside
01:01:30as he was getting on the throttle pedal so nearly.
01:01:33The rear wheel so nearly touched.
01:01:35Remember, if you saw our track guide with Jack
01:01:37earlier this weekend,
01:01:38he hated that turn 10 right from the get-go.
01:01:42As soon as he saw it with us,
01:01:43as we...
01:01:44He spun there yesterday too,
01:01:45and as soon as he saw that corner with us
01:01:47as we went around the track,
01:01:48the first time he'd ever seen it
01:01:49when we were doing our track guide,
01:01:51he hated it immediately.
01:01:52And look, it's caught him out again.
01:01:54Coulthard now, down in the one-minute 14s.
01:01:57He is absolutely flying in fifth place.
01:02:00Well, here is the leader.
01:02:02We haven't seen much of him
01:02:03because he's out there in front
01:02:05by 37.5 seconds.
01:02:08Michael Schumacher pacing himself to the end,
01:02:12but he has still got 32 laps to go.
01:02:15Heights, Harold Frentzen and Barrichello
01:02:17battling for that second position now.
01:02:20Barrichello trying to make it
01:02:21Ferrari first and Ferrari second.
01:02:24Frentzen trying to stop him.
01:02:25Jack Villeneuve has spun,
01:02:27and the McLaren mechanics are out in the pit lane
01:02:30for David Coulthard in fifth position.
01:02:3347 seconds behind Michael Schumacher,
01:02:36ahead of Pedro Diniz.
01:02:38Ralph Schumacher is seventh.
01:02:39Remember, he was second for a long time.
01:02:41Eddie Irvine is now eighth,
01:02:43and in comes David Coulthard.
01:02:46James Allen.
01:02:47It's a rough break for David Coulthard.
01:02:48He was going really strongly,
01:02:49but it probably explains his pace.
01:02:51They're going to fuel this car
01:02:52to go through to the finish.
01:02:53He's in a similar situation to Ralph Schumacher,
01:02:55but I have a hunch from Ralph
01:02:56that he was probably on a two-stop strategy.
01:02:59Started 10th on the grid,
01:03:00and he was trying to make up places,
01:03:02but Coulthard is going to lose a lot of places here.
01:03:049.6.
01:03:05He'll probably rejoin about 11th place.
01:03:07Bad news for him.
01:03:08Yeah, well done, James.
01:03:10That's exactly where he's rejoined
01:03:12because Elise has gone past him
01:03:14and Heidfeldt, Genet and Ricciardo Zonta.
01:03:18And this is going to be a good one
01:03:19down into the first corner.
01:03:20Barrichello just...
01:03:22No.
01:03:23Which Ferrari is that?
01:03:24That's Michael Schumacher,
01:03:25so effectively lapping David Coulthard.
01:03:27Schumacher yet to stop for his fuel,
01:03:30so David goes down a lap.
01:03:32I think we've just seen why Coulthard jumped the start.
01:03:36If you saw him as he raised the revs at the pit stop,
01:03:39the car started to move forward,
01:03:41and they were still refueling it.
01:03:43It seems like his clutch is dragging.
01:03:45Slipping clutch for David Coulthard is our guess.
01:03:49Michael Schumacher, nothing slipping for him
01:03:51at the present moment.
01:03:53Lap 43 ahead of David Coulthard.
01:03:56Not just ahead of him, but a lap,
01:03:58a full lap ahead of him.
01:04:00And no McLaren in the points again.
01:04:02Both the Ferraris in the points.
01:04:04Michael Schumacher is leading.
01:04:06Rubens Barrichello is third.
01:04:08Heinz-Harald Fredsen is second.
01:04:10We're leaving. We'll be back.
01:06:23Lap 45, we're riding with Rubens Barrichello,
01:06:26who is closing in on the yellow Jordan
01:06:28ahead of us of Heinz-Harald Fredsen
01:06:30in second place.
01:06:32There's only about a second in it.
01:06:34Rubens Barrichello as well as Trudy got the message.
01:06:37He's lapping six tenths of a second faster than Fredsen.
01:06:41He's lapping about four tenths of a second slower
01:06:43than his team mate, David Coulthard,
01:06:45and he's in second place.
01:06:47Rubens Barrichello is in second place.
01:06:50He's lapping about four tenths of a second slower
01:06:52than his team mate, race leader Michael Schumacher.
01:06:55Ferrari leads Jordan second.
01:06:57Ferrari third.
01:06:58Milano is fourth.
01:06:59Denise is fifth.
01:07:00Santa is sixth.
01:07:01Yes, and Rubens changing something on the steering wheel there.
01:07:03Presumably, he can't change the diff setting
01:07:05while he's going around,
01:07:06so I don't know what he would be changing in there.
01:07:08But surely he's now hooked this car up.
01:07:11He has been lapping even faster than Michael
01:07:13in the sister car.
01:07:14He was off the pace, remember,
01:07:16in the early stages of the race.
01:07:17Seemed to be a sitting target for everybody.
01:07:19As Herbert Villeneuve and co. charged past him.
01:07:22But now, he's found some grip.
01:07:24Of course, he's yet to stop again.
01:07:26I'm sure he will have to come in for fuel one more time,
01:07:29Will Rubens,
01:07:30as will Frentzen and Schumacher up there at the front.
01:07:33What an astounding race this is turning out to be.
01:07:36Remember that Ferrari led the Constructors' Championship
01:07:40right up to Hungary.
01:07:42But then McLaren took over the lead.
01:07:44And now, Ferrari are first and third.
01:07:47Are they soon going to be first and second
01:07:49in the United States of America
01:07:51at this marvellous circuit, Indianapolis?
01:07:54Yes, Jordan needs these points today.
01:07:56They're down in fifth equal in the championship.
01:07:58They were expecting...
01:07:59They finished third last year.
01:08:00They were expecting great things this year,
01:08:02and it hasn't worked out.
01:08:03They've had reliability problems and a bit of bad luck.
01:08:06They have shown some good speed,
01:08:07as is Frentzen today up there in second place,
01:08:10albeit 41 seconds off the lead.
01:08:13But Jordan desperately needs these points.
01:08:15Yes, we haven't talked much about the weather lately.
01:08:18You can see from the light grey coloured portion of the track
01:08:22that it's dry all the way round in parts.
01:08:25There are, of course, some dam lines.
01:08:26You can see it there on Turn 10, the left-hander.
01:08:30But if you use your head,
01:08:31and they've certainly got plenty of brains in theirs,
01:08:34you can stay on the light
01:08:35and, therefore, the faster part of the circuit,
01:08:38which Frentzen just failed to do now.
01:08:40And Barrichello is getting into a very strong position
01:08:43to get past the Jordan.
01:08:45He's a slow car on the start-finish line.
01:08:47Over to the right-hand side,
01:08:48de la Rosa is out of the race on the right.
01:08:50I don't think it'll be a problem.
01:08:52There is that car now.
01:08:53This looks like a video game, doesn't it?
01:08:55Absolutely amazing.
01:08:56And that is a difficult car to move out of the way,
01:08:59a very difficult car to clear off the line,
01:09:02depending on whether they choose to do so or not,
01:09:04or just leave it there,
01:09:05because that has got to travel a few hundred metres
01:09:08to clear it off the racetrack.
01:09:10Yeah, tough Ferraros,
01:09:11after all the complimentary things
01:09:13I've justifiably been saying about them.
01:09:15Both of them out of the race,
01:09:17but we're back in it,
01:09:18and Rubens Barrichello is well and truly on it.
01:09:21Look at this.
01:09:22Heinz Frentzen second,
01:09:25Barrichello third,
01:09:27and they are three seconds ahead of Villeneuve,
01:09:30who's actually catching both of them,
01:09:32as Dancarlo Fisichella,
01:09:34Gino Fisichella, as he's called here,
01:09:37is in 17th position, entering the pit lane,
01:09:40and his teammate, Woertz, as a matter of interest,
01:09:42is 15th.
01:09:43This circuit has not at all suited the Benettons.
01:09:46They have just not been able to get grip.
01:09:49Barrichello can and does, as does Frentzen.
01:09:53Now, out of Turn 11,
01:09:56into Turn 12.
01:09:58This is the Fla.
01:09:59155 miles an hour building.
01:10:02Now, let's listen.
01:10:03Listen to the revs.
01:10:08Wow!
01:10:13Wham!
01:10:14Down into second gear,
01:10:17from seventh to sixth,
01:10:19to fifth, to fourth, to third,
01:10:20and Barrichello is now almost on the gearbox
01:10:23of Heinz Harald Frentzen in second position.
01:10:26But it's a cliche.
01:10:28Here it comes.
01:10:30Getting there is one thing.
01:10:32Getting past is another.
01:10:34Yes, all the time, Michael's extending his lead now
01:10:36up front to 43.4 seconds.
01:10:40Coulthard came out of the pits after his stop in eighth,
01:10:43and Irvine in ninth.
01:10:45So, Brits still not having much of a day.
01:10:48Johnny Herbert's climbed up a few, up into 14th.
01:10:51They're way, way down the field now.
01:10:53Michael Schumacher has not made mistakes,
01:10:55has not had problems.
01:10:56Barrichello hacksawing away at the wheel there,
01:10:59trying to stay in touch with Frentzen.
01:11:01The Ferrari mechanics, I can see,
01:11:03out of the comedy box window here,
01:11:05in the pit lane once again.
01:11:07Now, that should, I assume, be for Barrichello,
01:11:10because he stopped for slicks much earlier than Michael.
01:11:13And does Barrichello duck into the pit lane?
01:11:16No, he doesn't.
01:11:17It's Michael that James is expecting in down there.
01:11:20That is surprising.
01:11:22We thought he could go a little bit further than that,
01:11:24because he stopped quite a bit later than anybody else
01:11:27for those slick tyres.
01:11:29Well, look at this.
01:11:30Frentzen and Barrichello are just out of shot.
01:11:33Is Jacques Villeneuve in the BAR in fourth position?
01:11:37And he is catching both of them.
01:11:40The BAR has been getting better and better this season,
01:11:44you heard Adrian Reynard.
01:11:46And into the pits comes Michael Schumacher
01:11:49with a lead of 45 seconds.
01:11:51He should be able to get in, take on fuel,
01:11:53change tyres, get out, still in the lead, James Allen.
01:11:56Yeah, I think the reason for this is simply safety.
01:11:59He's about to catch up to Zonta and Diniz.
01:12:01Traffic is moving quite quickly in sixth place, I think it is.
01:12:04So just a bit of caution, really, on Ross Brawn's part.
01:12:07Get him out safely.
01:12:08Looks pretty good at the moment.
01:12:09Of course, he also, 7.7 seconds,
01:12:11also got the wavy yellow flag still on the main straight.
01:12:13So just wanted to get him through there nicely.
01:12:15And smart thinking, I think.
01:12:17Yeah, yeah, immaculate stop.
01:12:19Just under eight seconds.
01:12:20Keeps the limiter on to not exceed the speed limit in the pit lane.
01:12:26Rejoins the circuit, still in the lead.
01:12:28We wait for Frentzen and Barrichello to come through.
01:12:32They should now be about 20 seconds behind the lead Ferrari
01:12:37of Michael Schumacher, who is on his 50th lap out of 73.
01:12:42Now, there is the Jordan.
01:12:44There's only one of them left in the race.
01:12:49Turning in.
01:12:51And there is Frentzen, followed by Barrichello.
01:12:54So that's the battle for second position.
01:12:57And I think it's just at the moment that Barrichello tries to get past
01:13:02by putting a wheel in the damp pit.
01:13:04He realises he can't get through that way.
01:13:06So he's got to wait.
01:13:08And he's got to wait until that long straight out of Turn 12.
01:13:12Yes, and Villeneuve, look, ever homing in on them.
01:13:14The shot before Murray was actually the Minardi of Matsukane
01:13:18chasing John Alessi for ninth place.
01:13:20And still going well is Matsukane.
01:13:23But this is the squabble for second.
01:13:25Just three tenths of a second between them.
01:13:27Last time over the start-finish line.
01:13:29Looks even closer now.
01:13:31Villeneuve, just one and a half seconds adrift.
01:13:33Ferrari and Jordan in the pit lane.
01:13:37So we're expecting them both in this lap.
01:13:39Yes, and it's going to be critical.
01:13:41Can Barrichello make a faster stop than Frentzen?
01:13:44They're going to come in and stop virtually together.
01:13:46Frentzen comes in. Barrichello does not.
01:13:49So now, if the Jordan mechanics can make an absolutely superlative stop
01:13:54and the Ferrari mechanics cannot for Barrichello,
01:13:57it's likely that they'll both do well.
01:13:59It could change the position as Matsukane comes in,
01:14:02and Villeneuve is right up with Barrichello,
01:14:05who is now in second place.
01:14:07James, what can you tell us?
01:14:09Fantastic bluff there by the Ferrari team.
01:14:11They came out, made Jordan react,
01:14:14and as soon as Rubens went straight on,
01:14:16they just came back in again, casual as you like.
01:14:18Meanwhile, the Jordan team have obviously made their stop.
01:14:21Rubens can go a couple of laps longer, put the hammer down,
01:14:23and maybe he'll pass him out of the track anyway.
01:14:25Here is Rubens in the red Ferrari,
01:14:28behind him in the white B.A.R., Jacques Villeneuve.
01:14:31Here is Ralf Schumacher in 10th position,
01:14:34battling with John Alessi, and we rejoin.
01:14:37And Louise is with Mika Hakkinen.
01:14:42Louise?
01:14:44Lost that transmission.
01:14:45Mika, this has been a disastrous time for this to happen to him, hasn't it?
01:14:49So we stay with Rubens.
01:14:51Any ideas what actually happened?
01:14:53I don't know, but I lost the power from the engine.
01:14:57So, you know, we have to ask one of the technical people from the team.
01:15:02They could explain it exactly what happened,
01:15:04but just lost the power from the engine.
01:15:06How much of a disaster do you think this is in terms of your championship aspiration?
01:15:09It doesn't help much, does it?
01:15:10But, again, this race is not over yet.
01:15:13Thanks, Mika.
01:15:14No, it isn't over yet.
01:15:17Jacques Villeneuve comes into the pits,
01:15:19but I think Mika Hakkinen was doing all he can do now,
01:15:23which was clutching at straws.
01:15:25There's another 22 laps to go.
01:15:27He can only hope that Michael Schumacher will hit trouble and retire from the race.
01:15:32If he doesn't, it's going to mean that the German will be leading the World Championship
01:15:37by eight points with two races to go.
01:15:41It's by no means insuperable for Mika Hakkinen, if that were to be the case,
01:15:45but it's certainly not good news.
01:15:47Meantime, Schumacher, Michael, leads on lap 52.
01:15:51Barrichello, second.
01:15:52Jacques Villeneuve, there he is in third position.
01:15:56Heinz-Harald Frentzen is in fourth place ahead of David Coulthard
01:16:00for those two World Championship points,
01:16:02which are going to be the only two that McLaren get in this race,
01:16:05unless Coulthard can improve his position.
01:16:08He's 12.5 seconds behind Frentzen.
01:16:10Diniz is in sixth place.
01:16:13The remainers in the top ten, Zonta.
01:16:15So, both the BARs are in the top seven.
01:16:19Eddie Irvine is eighth for Jaguar.
01:16:21Alessi is ninth for Prost.
01:16:24And Schumacher, Ralph, is tenth for Williams.
01:16:28Barrichello there, lapping the Prost and really having quite a struggle.
01:16:33That's the second time he's been past the pits, and finally he's through.
01:16:37So, Barrichello, that was a 1.15.0, though not a bad lap.
01:16:42He surely is putting fast enough laps in.
01:16:45We know Frentzen's now got a full of tanks.
01:16:47Barrichello, I think, should be three or four seconds further down the road
01:16:51when he makes his stop.
01:16:52Give him a chance to slingshot past Frentzen in the Jordan
01:16:57and make it a scarlet 1.2 into the last stages of the race.
01:17:01Well, we've seen Ferrari sell a magnificent, enormous dummy
01:17:06big enough to put in an elephant's mouth, never mind a baby's,
01:17:09to Jordan and Frentzen, as a result of which you're looking...
01:17:13And off in the background goes Ralph Schumacher again.
01:17:17He's not having at all a happy race now.
01:17:19But Rubens Barrichello is second.
01:17:21It's Ferrari first, Ferrari second, Jordan third.
01:17:24That's Frentzen.
01:17:25Villeneuve fourth, Coulthard fifth, and he's sixth.
01:17:28Yes, Ralph, as we suspected, did have a loss of pressure.
01:17:31And Barrichello there, across the puddle.
01:17:33He's in just past the 120-kilometre speed limit.
01:17:37It's 780 metres in total from one end of the speed limit to the other.
01:17:42James.
01:17:44Guys, it's absolutely hilarious the way they pulled this bluff on Jordan.
01:17:48What's Barrichello, how has he gained?
01:17:50Well, six seconds he's made over Frentzen in the last two laps alone.
01:17:54He should comfortably rejoin in second place.
01:17:56Brilliant pit work, great tactics by the Ferrari team.
01:17:59Yes, I'm looking down towards Turn 13.
01:18:02There is no sign yet of Heinz-Harald Frentzen
01:18:05as Rubens Barrichello goes up to what there is...
01:18:08Now, I'm always very cautious about Jordans and Minardis.
01:18:12But whichever it is, Rubens Barrichello has joined ahead,
01:18:17and it was a Minardi followed by a Jordan.
01:18:19So Rubens Barrichello has made what we presume to be,
01:18:23unless he has bad luck, his last pit stop.
01:18:26We're on lap 54 out of 73.
01:18:28Ferrari first and second.
01:18:30Louise Goodman has got news from Minardi.
01:18:32Yeah, Murray, this new pit lane service seems to be causing a few problems.
01:18:35I mentioned earlier on that Johnny Herbert had locked up
01:18:37and knocked into his mechanics.
01:18:39The same thing has just happened down at the Minardi garage
01:18:41when Mazzucconi's coming for his refueling stop.
01:18:43He's not one of the gearbox mechanics, Sancho Pirelli, over.
01:18:46The medics have actually been with him in the pit lane.
01:18:48They've just picked him up and taken him out to the back of the garage
01:18:51and are treating him.
01:18:52He doesn't look to be too badly hurt,
01:18:54so it's obviously going to be something that the drivers are going to have to watch out for
01:18:56when they're coming in to refuel.
01:18:58Yeah, thank you for that, Louise.
01:18:59Frentzen and Villeneuve we're looking at now,
01:19:01fighting for third position.
01:19:03Well, Ferrari's last 1-2 was at Canada this year
01:19:07when Michael Schumacher beat Rubens at Barrichello.
01:19:11They look, fingers crossed,
01:19:14as far as the Tifosi worldwide are concerned,
01:19:18as though they are on target for another one.
01:19:22But it's anybody's guess at the present moment
01:19:25whether it's going to be a Jordan or a BAR in third position,
01:19:29as we watch Frentzen fighting to retain that place
01:19:32as he comes up behind the Minardi and hopes to get through.
01:19:35It is Marc Genet that he's lapping,
01:19:38and the Spaniard is down in 13th place.
01:19:40Frentzen got ahead, Villeneuve did not.
01:19:43It won't be long before the Canadian, who we are with now,
01:19:46has a go at the yellow Minardi ahead of Marc Genet,
01:19:50the voluble Spaniard.
01:19:53And meantime ahead, Frentzen is pulling away
01:19:57because there's nothing that Villeneuve can do
01:20:01to get past on this twisty part of the circuit.
01:20:04It's not until they hit the quick bit,
01:20:06although maybe he'll close right up at Halman Boulevard
01:20:09and he is going to go through on the inside
01:20:11as they go to Turn 8.
01:20:13That was good news for Jacques Villeneuve,
01:20:15still in fourth position ahead of David Coulthard and Denis.
01:20:19Genet having to yield, of course, now.
01:20:21He's being lapped, so yellow, blue flags waving there for Genet
01:20:25and lets Villeneuve through.
01:20:27Villeneuve will be ruining that spin he had in Turn 10.
01:20:30That certainly lost him his chance in the pit stops
01:20:33to leapfrog Frentzen.
01:20:35And it's Barrichello who got that job done.
01:20:37Barrichello now running some 40 seconds
01:20:40behind teammate Michael Schumacher.
01:20:42Isn't this looking good for Ferrari
01:20:44in the Constructors' Championship too?
01:20:46Indeed, indeed it is.
01:20:47They're on a potential 16 points.
01:20:49They were four points behind McLaren when this race finished.
01:20:53So, if they're taking the lead in the Drivers' Championship
01:20:56from Micka Hakkinen with Michael Schumacher,
01:20:59they're taking the lead, or will be,
01:21:01if things stay as they are in the Constructors' Championship,
01:21:04by a very sturdy 12 points.
01:21:08Great news for Ferrari, who won the Constructors' Championship,
01:21:12of course, last year.
01:21:14Bad news for McLaren.
01:21:16And things have seesawed this season.
01:21:18We've had a wonderful fight for the Drivers' Championship.
01:21:22Michael Schumacher led it right the way through to Germany.
01:21:26And then Micka Hakkinen took it over
01:21:28with two successive victories in Hungary and Belgium.
01:21:31He kept it in Italy.
01:21:33And now it looks as though...
01:21:35It looks, but I'm being very cautious
01:21:37because this race has still got some distance to go.
01:21:40We're on lap 57 out of 73.
01:21:43It looks as though Michael Schumacher
01:21:45is going to take it back again with two races to go
01:21:48and that Ferrari are similarly going to go back into the lead
01:21:52which they lost in Germany in the Constructors' Championship.
01:21:56And it's no less than Michael Schumacher
01:22:00and, in my opinion, Ferrari deserve.
01:22:03Michael left Benetton in 1995, as I've said before,
01:22:07to take up the challenge of bringing Ferrari back to the front
01:22:11after being out for a long time.
01:22:14They last won the Drivers' Championship in 1979
01:22:18with Jody Schechter.
01:22:20And Michael Schumacher has finished second for Ferrari three times.
01:22:26He lost one championship under very contentious circumstances
01:22:30at Areth and the man you're looking at now,
01:22:32Jacques Villeneuve, who was then driving for Williams.
01:22:35But with Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne and John Tooke,
01:22:39they have reformed Ferrari brilliantly.
01:22:42And it looks as though things may be coming good for them.
01:22:46But, like I always say, anything can happen in Formula One
01:22:49and it usually does.
01:22:51We've still got a lot of points.
01:22:53We've got 20 points left over Japan and Malaysia
01:22:56in the Drivers' Championship after this race
01:22:59and 32 points left in the Constructors' Championship
01:23:02after this race.
01:23:04As Heinz-Harald Frentzen causes our camera there
01:23:07with a bit of spray from his rear wheels to mist up a bit.
01:23:10The film changes and Jacques Villeneuve sees the Jordan ahead of him
01:23:14as they come through to complete their 57th lap,
01:23:18which, of course, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello have already done.
01:23:23And Villeneuve is certainly fighting, is he not?
01:23:27Look at the way he closes on Frentzen.
01:23:29Yes, he's been a lot faster this last three or four laps.
01:23:32Great, great drive here from Villeneuve,
01:23:34notwithstanding that slightly careless spin.
01:23:38But, unfortunately, he just got a wheel on the grass
01:23:40and it plucked him round.
01:23:42Coulthard is quicker than the lot of them,
01:23:44but he's 12 seconds behind Villeneuve with 15 laps to go.
01:23:48So, Coulthard really has...
01:23:51I don't think he's got enough time to get up there
01:23:53and join that scrap for third place.
01:23:55Incidentally, apologies to McLaren and David Coulthard.
01:23:57I forgot when I was doing my mental arithmetic just now
01:24:00that David Coulthard is in fifth position,
01:24:03which is a potential two World Championship points,
01:24:07so that would close things up a bit
01:24:09between McLaren and Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship.
01:24:12But we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
01:24:15Doniz there in sixth place, starting to come under pressure from Zonta
01:24:18in the white BAR there,
01:24:20the final World Championship point of the afternoon.
01:24:24At the moment, anyway, at least,
01:24:26between Doniz and Zonta, and Doniz coming under pressure.
01:24:28Yes, and it looks to me like, if they stay where they are,
01:24:31this will be the best race that BAR have ever had,
01:24:34because potentially they've got Jacques Villeneuve finishing fourth,
01:24:38potentially they've got Zonta finishing sixth,
01:24:41if he can catch and get past the Sauber
01:24:43that we're looking at of Pedro Doniz.
01:24:45And that would be their first ever finish in a race
01:24:48with both their cars in the points,
01:24:50and Doniz goes into the pits,
01:24:52and Zonta does move up a place into the points,
01:24:55into sixth position.
01:24:57Now, he's stopped twice.
01:24:59Doniz has already stopped twice,
01:25:01so it is looking good for BAR,
01:25:03as Schumacher, who has lapped everybody up to Zonta,
01:25:07who is sixth, goes through.
01:25:09Now, the Sauber pit is right outside,
01:25:11and they've only just got the fourth tyres there,
01:25:14third and fourth tyres,
01:25:16so they were not expecting Pedro Doniz in the pits that time around.
01:25:21And it's a long pit stop.
01:25:23Watching him now, you're watching Michael Schumacher.
01:25:25Doniz is away, and that's everybody by surprise.
01:25:28It's a third stop of the afternoon.
01:25:30Lap 60, 73-lap race.
01:25:32There's Schumacher,
01:25:3440 seconds ahead of his team-mate,
01:25:39Rubens Barrichello,
01:25:41who is five seconds ahead of Frentzen,
01:25:44who has got Jacques Villeneuve
01:25:46metaphorically attached to his rear wing.
01:25:49David Coulthard, in fifth place,
01:25:52is closing on Villeneuve's BAR
01:25:55and Frentzen's Jordan ahead of him.
01:25:58He's lapping about half a second quicker than they are,
01:26:01but as he's some 11 seconds behind them,
01:26:04it's going to be nip and tuck
01:26:06as far as him getting fourth, let alone third place.
01:26:10And in sixth position, as I've just said,
01:26:12Ricciardo Zonta.
01:26:14So, fingers crossed, BAR enthusiasts,
01:26:16everybody at Bista,
01:26:19Brackley, where the factory is.
01:26:23It's very good news indeed for BAR.
01:26:26There is the proof,
01:26:28as Jacques Villeneuve is right behind the third-place man.
01:26:32Heinz-Harald Frentzen from Mönchengladbach in Germany.
01:26:36We ride with Villeneuve.
01:26:38Yes, this is Villeneuve's first part of the circuit.
01:26:41The two hairpins at nine and ten,
01:26:43Frentzen snaking around there,
01:26:45trying to apply his 800 horsepower.
01:26:47Turn 11, there's a nasty wet patch,
01:26:49a little puddle on the kerb,
01:26:51the exit kerb.
01:26:52He tends to throw up a little bit of water and dust
01:26:54onto Villeneuve's visor.
01:26:56The camera can clear itself.
01:26:58Villeneuve's too busy to wipe his visor at the moment
01:27:01as he tries desperately to get in the slipstream of Frentzen.
01:27:04They're doing about 200 miles an hour now,
01:27:07and I think that camera angle's slightly deceptive once again.
01:27:10Villeneuve nowhere near close enough to have a go.
01:27:13There's absolutely nothing between these two,
01:27:15both on, that time around,
01:27:17it was eight thousandths of a second
01:27:19between their two lap times.
01:27:21Yeah, the interesting thing about this to me
01:27:23is that Jordan has got the Mugen Honda engine
01:27:27and Jacques Villeneuve's B.A.R.
01:27:29has got the official Works Honda engine.
01:27:31Next year, Jordan are getting the official Works Honda engine.
01:27:35So, Jacques Villeneuve,
01:27:37for political as well as practical and personal reasons,
01:27:41really needs to get ahead of Frentzen's car,
01:27:44which theoretically, anyway,
01:27:45has got at least a marginally inferior engine in it.
01:27:48Yes, Ralf Schumacher,
01:27:49who was running such a strong second early in this race,
01:27:51has stopped for the fifth time this afternoon.
01:27:54I think they're having to constantly recharge the pneumatic system
01:27:59and Ralf really just dropping completely out of contention.
01:28:02He's effectively 15th and last now.
01:28:05Not a good race for Williams,
01:28:06but they're 14 points ahead of Benetton
01:28:08in the Constructors' Championship in third place.
01:28:11Ralf Schumacher, I can tell you, is out of the car.
01:28:14Of course, Jenson Button retired a long time ago.
01:28:17So, it's a double retirement for Williams.
01:28:21Rotten luck, but they've had an absolutely wonderful season.
01:28:24As I said earlier on, much better than they could have expected.
01:28:27And they're not going to lose their third position
01:28:30in the Constructors' Championship.
01:28:32We are going to leave Indianapolis again,
01:28:35but as ever, we'll be back.
01:28:48At least I'm not coming...
01:28:51They told you to stop.
01:28:52When they tell you to stop, you have to stop.
01:29:47INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS
01:30:17INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS
01:30:47INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS
01:30:48INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS
01:30:49INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS
01:30:50INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS
01:30:51INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS
01:30:52INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS
01:30:54INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS
01:30:56INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS
01:30:58...out ahead.
01:30:59Barrichello still second.
01:31:00And this is the battle,
01:31:02and what a battle for third position
01:31:04between the Jordan of Heinz Harald Frentzen
01:31:07and the car we are riding with,
01:31:09that of Jack Vielner of the BAR.
01:31:13As I was saying earlier on,
01:31:15Very important to Villeneuve for all sorts of reasons,
01:31:18political, practical and personal,
01:31:20that he gets ahead of Frensen,
01:31:22because Frensen has got a semi-works Mugen Honda engine
01:31:27and VAR have got a works Honda engine.
01:31:30They will want to beat their Japanese rivals,
01:31:33especially as Jordan has got the works Honda engine next year.
01:31:36Yes, and Villeneuve there has got a nasty case of understeer developing,
01:31:40and that's holding him up through the complex, through the infield,
01:31:44but still he's able to be there a little bit quicker than Frensen.
01:31:47He just cannot get enough of a slipstream down the main straight.
01:31:51Here's another opportunity.
01:31:52They do not lift the throttle for over 22 seconds,
01:31:56and he's just sitting there.
01:31:57You just never seem to have enough horsepower,
01:31:59however much you've got,
01:32:01and this time Jacques has got a nice tow,
01:32:03and I'm sure Jacques can be the last of the late breakers if he needs to be,
01:32:06but there's not a lot between the Mugen Honda and the Honda, is there?
01:32:09And he takes a dive up the inside.
01:32:11Yes, and he's going to go wide.
01:32:12That's the problem.
01:32:13He's going to have to take to the grass.
01:32:15There is an escape road there.
01:32:16It would have cost him a lot of time, and that really...
01:32:19Now we'll see how fast Jacques is,
01:32:21see if he can close that gap straight back up again,
01:32:23but the only thing he could do was a big stab up the inside.
01:32:27Well, he tried, and he was right to try.
01:32:29He's tried before this season and taken somebody off.
01:32:32Here's a replay coming up to Turn 1.
01:32:34They're doing about 210 miles an hour as they close.
01:32:37Villeneuve goes through, runs wide onto the grass,
01:32:40loses traction, does well to keep the car pointing straight
01:32:43and not go up the escape road,
01:32:45and of course now Fredsen has massively increased
01:32:48the gap between himself and the BAR, which is back on the track.
01:32:51Yes, a tad ambitious, that one there, Jacques.
01:32:54I think he came from about three car lengths back,
01:32:56and that's the net result.
01:32:58I think he had to have a go,
01:33:00but he was just a little bit too late on the brakes.
01:33:03I think he could have made it, he just braked too late.
01:33:05Yes, they all tend to blur together.
01:33:07Where was it that he took Schumacher off?
01:33:09Ralph Schumacher in the Williams.
01:33:10That was in Canada, at the hairpin in Montreal.
01:33:13So that gives Fredsen a bit of breathing space,
01:33:15and can Jacques now?
01:33:17They're both lapping pretty quickly anyway,
01:33:19but can Villeneuve clean those tyres up,
01:33:21warm them back up again and start closing that gap down?
01:33:25Coulthard 9.8 seconds behind Villeneuve last time around.
01:33:28He's going to be significantly less.
01:33:30He's now 5.8 because of the time Villeneuve lost,
01:33:33so Coulthard homing in on the pair of them again.
01:33:37Lap 66 out of 73, race order top ten.
01:33:40Michael Schumacher leads his Ferrari team-mate
01:33:43Rubens Barrichello by 30 seconds.
01:33:45Fredsen is 8 seconds behind them.
01:33:47Off spins the Prost.
01:33:50That's John Alessi.
01:33:52Third position hides Fredsen.
01:33:53Fourth, Villeneuve.
01:33:54David Coulthard is fifth.
01:33:56Sontar is sixth.
01:33:57Eddie Irvine in the Jaguar is seventh.
01:33:59Alessi, who has just spun, is out of the race,
01:34:02so up into eighth position goes his team-mate, Nick Heidfeldt,
01:34:06and in tenth position is Pedro Diniz.
01:34:09Yes, that's the engine seizing up there.
01:34:12Alessi trying to clear the track,
01:34:13trying not to leave oil on the racing line,
01:34:16the pro that he is, but I think the engine seizes, basically,
01:34:19and puts him off the road.
01:34:21Yeah, I missed one of them, actually.
01:34:23It's as a result of that move.
01:34:27Alexander Voortz is now in tenth position,
01:34:30pursued by Johnny Herbert, who is in 11th position.
01:34:34Retirements, as you watch,
01:34:36Michael Schumacher on lap 77 out of 73,
01:34:39in order of retirement.
01:34:40Jarno Trulli-Jordan, Jenson Button-Williams,
01:34:43Mikko Salo-Sauber, Mika Hakkinen-McLaren,
01:34:46Jos Verstappen-Arrows, Fisi Keller-Bendetton,
01:34:49de la Rosa-Arrows, Ralph Schumacher-Williams,
01:34:52both the Williams out of the race,
01:34:53both the Arrows out of the race.
01:34:55Last man, as ever, but he is running, Gaston Mazzacane,
01:34:5914th, and he is, in fact, he's out of the race now.
01:35:0312 left out of the 22 who started,
01:35:06and Michael Schumacher coming through yet again,
01:35:09this time to complete his 66th lap.
01:35:13Yeah, he's the slowest man on the track at the moment,
01:35:15by some margin, just stroking it.
01:35:1729-second lead with those six laps remaining,
01:35:21so Michael just on an afternoon cruise.
01:35:24He's done the hard work, he can now coast a little.
01:35:26Martin, we've got the luxury of the computer,
01:35:31which tells us where everybody is,
01:35:32pictures of everybody around the track,
01:35:34which are ever-changing,
01:35:35but from a spectator's point of view,
01:35:37as the lady walks in,
01:35:39they're seeing a Schumacher, an enormous gap to Barrichello,
01:35:43a gap to Frentzen, Villeneuve catching him,
01:35:47David Coulthard, fifth.
01:35:48What are they gonna think of this, do you think?
01:35:50Well, they've seen a standing start,
01:35:52they saw some good tactics,
01:35:53that they've been able to follow the race,
01:35:55and been able to understand
01:35:57what's happening in front of them.
01:35:58I think the crowd have enjoyed it.
01:36:00They just seem to get into it here,
01:36:01the fans here just come along,
01:36:03and they're determined to be entertained and happy.
01:36:06I have to say.
01:36:07Yeah, when the cars went onto the circuit
01:36:10for the first time today,
01:36:11and this is the big crowd, of course,
01:36:12we had a lot here yesterday for qualifying,
01:36:15but when they went onto the circuit
01:36:16for the final half hour of practice this morning,
01:36:20there was a gigantic eruption of applause
01:36:23from this enormous crowd.
01:36:25There are a massive number of petrolheads here,
01:36:2860,000 people have come from Canada,
01:36:30and one, and the Canadian there, Jacques Villeneuve,
01:36:33is closing up on Germany's Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
01:36:37He's still fighting for that third position.
01:36:39Yeah, he's three quarters of a second a lap faster,
01:36:41so demonstrates to you just how much
01:36:43Frentzen has been holding him up,
01:36:45but why should Frentzen yield?
01:36:47Of course, he will not,
01:36:48but Villeneuve's gonna have to get in that slipstream
01:36:50once again, and somehow try not to break quite so late.
01:36:55Yeah, I'd say Michael Schumacher is on his 69th lap.
01:37:01What I haven't mentioned today,
01:37:03and what you could see if the camera was high enough,
01:37:06is the marvelous Hall of Fame at Indianapolis,
01:37:09this fantastic museum,
01:37:12which has great Indy cars from the past,
01:37:15Formula One cars, sports cars,
01:37:18and is magnificently displayed, everything,
01:37:22and there is, including in that,
01:37:24a Stewart from last year, the Jackie Stewart car.
01:37:28And now we're on lap 69,
01:37:31and off goes Michael Schumacher.
01:37:34What on earth is he doing?
01:37:35That's amazing, Michael half asleep.
01:37:37He's got plenty of lead left to get away with that,
01:37:40but Michael obviously just falling asleep a little bit
01:37:42with his cruise, and off onto the grass.
01:37:45Absolutely amazing.
01:37:47He had a 26 second lead last time around.
01:37:49That's cost him four or five.
01:37:51Turns into the hairpin, look,
01:37:53goes on the grass on the way in,
01:37:54and that's exactly the part that caught out
01:37:58Jack Villeneuve earlier on,
01:37:59just dips the right hand wheel on the grass
01:38:02at the same time as applying the throttle,
01:38:04and Schumacher half asleep, that'll wake him up.
01:38:07How very lucky he was that there was not a high curb there,
01:38:10because if there had been, the Ferrari would have beached,
01:38:13he wouldn't have been able to get the power
01:38:15through the back wheels, especially on the grass there,
01:38:18but it looks as though, luckily for him,
01:38:20he's got away with it, literally got away with it,
01:38:23on lap 70, with three more to go at the end of this.
01:38:28Well, Ferrari in second place, don't forget,
01:38:31they are still on target for a maximum
01:38:34of 16 World Championship points,
01:38:37the first time they would have done that
01:38:38since the Canadian Grand Prix, which was race eight,
01:38:42and this is race 15, with two to go.
01:38:45And McLaren, currently leading
01:38:48the Constructors' Championship,
01:38:50because this race is far from over,
01:38:52are only on a potential two World Championship points
01:38:55for David Coulthard in that fifth position.
01:38:59The BARs of Zonta and Villeneuve are still both
01:39:02in the points to make history for the team
01:39:05if they can stay where they are.
01:39:07Frentzen there, right hand of the cars, third position.
01:39:11Now, behind Zonta in the BAR, sixth position,
01:39:14is Eddie Irvine in the Jaguar,
01:39:17he's lapping marginally quicker,
01:39:19but he's 22 seconds behind Zonta,
01:39:21so I don't think there's any question of catching him.
01:39:24And James Allen, what is the last minute news from Ferrari?
01:39:27Well, they're laughing now, Murray,
01:39:28but you can imagine how anxious they were,
01:39:30giant relief down here, and I went up to a few of them
01:39:33and said, what about that then?
01:39:34And they said, oh, well, that's Michael, you know,
01:39:36he's a genius, but sometimes,
01:39:38remember Monaco a few years ago, guys,
01:39:40where he was miles ahead in the lead,
01:39:41and he went straight on at Saint-Devote and spun it round.
01:39:44He's done it two or three times, he's done it here today,
01:39:46and hopefully for them, he's got away with it.
01:39:49Lap 71 for Michael Schumacher,
01:39:5272 and 73 to come.
01:39:55David Coulthard there, out on his own,
01:39:58the man who won in Britain,
01:40:00the one who won brilliantly at Monaco
01:40:02and the French Grand Prix, three victories this year,
01:40:06third in the World Championship.
01:40:08He's gonna close the gap between himself and Micah Hakkinen,
01:40:13but since that gap was some 17 points,
01:40:18it's not gonna make a lot of difference.
01:40:19Yeah, I think it was 19.
01:40:21I hate to tell you also,
01:40:22Villeneuve and Zonta finished fourth and sixth
01:40:25in the very first race of the year
01:40:27to give them a BAR, two cars in the top six,
01:40:31but can Villeneuve make it the first podium,
01:40:34I believe it would be, ever for the BAR team?
01:40:37Yes, indeed, it would be,
01:40:38and they all deserve to do well,
01:40:41the Formula One constructors,
01:40:43they all try massively hard,
01:40:44they all work all-nighters when they have to,
01:40:48they all spend an enormous amount of money,
01:40:50and none of them fail to deserve success.
01:40:55BAR have had a particularly torrid introduction
01:40:58to Formula One last year,
01:40:59and they richly deserve that third place,
01:41:02which would be Jacques Villeneuve's
01:41:04if he can only get past Heinz-Harald Fredsen,
01:41:07but he hasn't got long to do it,
01:41:08because Michael Schumacher is now on his last lap but one.
01:41:14Each lap, 2.6 miles long,
01:41:17so he's got less than five miles now,
01:41:20as I talked to you, and how Villeneuve is trying,
01:41:23he's throwing caution to the winds,
01:41:25he's gonna get right up behind Heinz-Harald Fredsen,
01:41:28and then pressure the German right to the last knockings,
01:41:31and he's still on it, look at him!
01:41:32Yeah, a bit leery there from Jacques,
01:41:33but it worked out quite well,
01:41:35he managed just to get the nose into the corner somehow,
01:41:37as they now head into turn eight,
01:41:40a little short squirt into nine,
01:41:41and this is where Jacques is very fast,
01:41:44even though he spun there earlier on,
01:41:46or I should say more, Fredsen seems slow through there,
01:41:49and Jacques has got a great chance
01:41:51of getting in the slipstream
01:41:52as Michael Schumacher commences his final tour, Morrie.
01:41:55Michael Schumacher is on lap 73 out of 73
01:42:01to come home and win,
01:42:03if he can just do this last 2.5 miles,
01:42:06a truly historic race.
01:42:08The first Formula One Grand Prix ever to be held
01:42:12at the fabled Indianapolis Motor Speedway,
01:42:16which has seen so much fantastic action
01:42:19from American drivers, American cars,
01:42:21Brazilian drivers, British drivers, Scottish drivers,
01:42:24let us not forget the Graham Hill one here,
01:42:27and Jackie Stewart one here,
01:42:29but it's going to be a marvelous victory
01:42:32for Michael Schumacher,
01:42:33and remember how he jumps up with joy
01:42:36on the victory podium,
01:42:38well, we're gonna be seeing the biggest leap of all
01:42:41if he just gets through these final few yards left.
01:42:45He tiptoes round turn 10,
01:42:48goes underneath the banner into turn 11.
01:42:51This is where the really fast part of the circuit begins,
01:42:54and Michael Schumacher can coast home now.
01:42:57This is going to be his seventh win of the year
01:43:00to put him back into the lead
01:43:02of the Drivers' World Championship,
01:43:05and in so doing to take Ferrari there as well
01:43:08in the Constructors' Championship.
01:43:10Yes, victory for Schumacher.
01:43:12Now, the gap between himself and Rubens Barrichello,
01:43:16his teammate, had closed to under 13 seconds
01:43:19on the previous lap.
01:43:21There's Barrichello crossing the line
01:43:23to make it 16 points for Ferrari,
01:43:26first, Ferrari second.
01:43:28Now, who's gonna be third?
01:43:29Frentzen's over the line now.
01:43:31Yes, Frentzen has already gone over the line, look.
01:43:34He took the third place from Villeneuve,
01:43:37and they ended up just 17 seconds
01:43:39behind Michael Schumacher in the end.
01:43:41They were closing that gap.
01:43:43Remember, Michael on a coast, then had a spin,
01:43:45but what a great, great race for Ferrari.
01:43:48This was the great unknown of the championship year.
01:43:51Ferrari have taken it.
01:43:52Remember just how good Michael was in Malaysia last year,
01:43:56despite there being a few dramas
01:43:57on technicalities on the car.
01:44:00There's a little bit of unease in the paddock
01:44:04about extending the pit lane and moving the grid,
01:44:08pole position slot,
01:44:09and certainly some unhappy people around in the paddock
01:44:12that it seems to always fall in Ferrari's favor.
01:44:15But whatever happened,
01:44:16they went out there and just won the race.
01:44:18Just look at that picture.
01:44:20The Ferrarista are here in massive numbers,
01:44:24with their flags.
01:44:25This could almost be Monza if it wasn't a double tier.
01:44:29We're going.
01:44:30Join us again soon to see the closing ceremonies.
01:44:38This is the end of the race.
